Free Agent Frenzyday Caps Clips
Your savory breakfast links:
- On this date one year ago, the Caps signed Mike Knuble. Two years ago today, they signed Jose Theodore. Back in '07 it was Tom Poti and Viktor Kozlov. On July 1, 2006, they signed Brian Pothier. Four straight years with an impact signing on the first day of free agency. Will today make it five (despite George McPhee's protestations to the contrary)?
- Allan Muir thinks the Caps should go get Anton Volchenkov and wait 'til the deadline for a second-line center. [SI]
- Elliotte Friedman has sources, plural, who think the Caps could be making a play for Ilya Kovalchuk. [CBC]
- Rory Boylen thinks the Caps need "gritty depth" and maybe a goalie. [The Hockey News]
- If the Caps are "defensively challenged," I wonder what that says about the fourteen teams that finished with a worse GAA last season. [National Post]
- Your handy dandy GMGM-to-English translation. [Peerless]
- Caps free agency previews. [Peerless, DCist, MD Pro Sports]
- The case for Saku Koivu, Mike Modano or Matt Cullen for second-line center. [RtR]
- The Caps are #11 in ESPN's "Ultimate Team Rankings" (but #1 in your hearts). [ESPN, Puck Daddy, SB Nation DC]
- Back to McPhee, a sweet game-worn jersey of his can be had if you're willing to shell out a few bucks. [eBay]

I guess some of these writers need viewership. Kovalchuk? Here? Why because he’s Russian and pals with Ovie? I mean I read it.
We have 1 big hole that needs to be filled and 1 minor one. We need no goalies.
I’m fully expecting the 1 big hole to be filled.

For the love of Mike, how’d they get 120 points last year?

Kovy rumors again? Doesn’t make sense at all. Let’s just say they sign him and then trade Semin. That still eats up a large chunk of cap room and doesn’t do anything to address the weaknesses on the team.
"You ever use smelling salts, every time you type a bad blog?" Brooks Laich
There is a logic to it, which is different than saying it’s the right move. The net cap effect is likely to be about $2-3 million (net of moving Semin, which would have to be done), which is about what the increase in the 2010-2011 cap is. So net, relative to the ceiling, the Caps would find themselves no worse off. But… it would mean they would have to go with the hand they have on defense and in goal, they almost certainly could not get a number two center (at least until the deadline, and that would almost certainly be a rental). It could have implications for the signings to come in the 2011 off season — Brooks Laich perhaps most important among them, and the team would be putting Eric Fehr in the role of Knuble, who probably could not be re-signed, whether or not you thought that was a good idea to begin with.
There is a road to get to “Kovalchuk,” but it might not be the destination you’re seeking. In the end, the price tag is just way too high, given how much is committed to core players as it is.
If you've read this far...seek help.

I don’t think it makes any sense to trade Semin for Kovalchuk – you’ll end up with a higher cap hit for no gain back. Trading Semin would almost certainly entail taking at least one roster body back – there’s no way he goes for just prospects and picks. So you’ve got Kovalchuk’s hit (which is likely to be higher than Semin’s in the first place) plus another roster player’s cap hit (unknown but probably not insubstantial) for the same type of player, and like you said you haven’t addressed the weaknesses on the team. Caps going after Kovalchuk doesn’t make sense.
Hanlon's Razor: Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.
Whether Semin goes for players, prospects, or picks would be entirely dependent on the team with which the Caps traded. Such things can be addressed strategically. For instance, Chicago has done a masterful job so far in managing a bad situation of their own doing — a lot of players on big money contracts requiring a salary dump — by moving contracts to teams in the East that are more or less bottom feeders (Byfuglien to Atlanta, Versteeg to Toronto). There is likely to be a “net” effect in whatever the Caps bring back, but they would not be trading Semin for Kovalchuk in any direct sense (it does have that indirect effect). Like we said, there is a logic to the idea, but that doesn’t make it a way to go. A lot of things would have to fit, including the return on Semin.
If you've read this far...seek help.
It’s flawed logic at best. Like you said, it has that indirect effect, which is the point I’m trying to make here. A lot of people think “Russian winger – CAPS!” but anyone using their head realizes they have enough of those. :P
I’d be very upset if the Caps went for Kovalchuk.
Hanlon's Razor: Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.
I would be, too. It is an inefficent use of available cap resources, all other things equal. Trouble is, days like today toss “other things being equal” out the window. One does not know what opportunities will present themselves. If, by some quirk of circumstance, Kovalchuk is a Cap at the end of the day, I would expect that a lot of other things will also happen or at least be put in motion (in part to addresss that net effect). He cannot be accommodated under the Caps’ current salary structure.
If there is a report that Semin is traded, though…
If you've read this far...seek help.
Well, GMGM doesn’t seem to be as given to the stupid pills as, say, Brian Burke, and thank heaven for that. I can only hope that that trend continues.
If there is a report that Semin is traded, though…
Again, that depends on for what and who. I don’t really want to see any moves that don’t address a need in the organization. Moving just to move is silly.
Hanlon's Razor: Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.
Theoretically, if Semin was moved to make room for Kovalchuk and an add’l $1.5-$2M net cap increase, I’d take it. Kovy is, hands down, the better player.

The “better player” isn’t always the best fit. I’m not convinced that swapping Semin for Kovalchuk would take us to the promised land of silver hardware, and if it doesn’t do that, then to hishkack with it.
I really and truly feel that our time and our money could be more productively spent.
Hanlon's Razor: Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.

That makes 2 of us, other things obviously need to be done. But given one or the other, I take Kovy.
I really and truly feel that our time and our money could be more productively spent.
Indeed, but this is the internets, where we can postulate and hypothesize all day!
my concern w/ kovy is that he’s played a grand total of 9 playoff games in his career. 3G 5As. we need guys who can produce in the playoffs. semin sure has sucked tail pipe in the playoffs the last two series, but he played well in his first two playoff series.
Just trying to capture the spirit of the thing...
before this year, semin had 22 in 21 which includes his 0’fer goals in the pittsburgh series.
my bigger concern w/ kovy is the lack of games. he’s a great player no doubt but i think the caps need to bank on someone with a proven playoff track record.
Just trying to capture the spirit of the thing...
Then again, Kovy had always been the “name” scorer. On the Caps he isn’t anymore. Maybe pressure off like with Hossa?
(FWIW I wouldn’t swap Semin for Kovy)

Kovy GAON/60 and GAOFF/60 are the same 2.61. Semin’s GAON is actually slightly higher than his GAOFF.
Of course Semin’s GAON/60 is .32 lower than Kovy’s, but his QualTeam is WAAAAAY higher.
I think it’s a wash.
Kovy had 6 seconds per 60 minutes, if I’m reading this right.

Thanks. I’m new so I haven’t figured out where to look up stats yet.
I still think Semin is a little better defensively than Kovy, but I might be biased towards Semin because he’s a Cap. Kovy has the edge in leadership by far.
No problem. NHL.com has a lot of the basic stats for an individual and for a team, and if you click on a player name, it will pull up their profile which will have a lot of their career stats.
You’ll also see us talk about some other oddball stats like GVT (goals vs. threshold) and Corsi – the advanced numbers can be found at behindthenet.ca. If one of the contributors brings in a stat that isn’t in one of those two places, they’ll tell you where they got it from. Look for a link somewhere in the post.
Hanlon's Razor: Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.
Yes, it’s really the case.
Alex Semin was taken in the 2002 draft. In 327 GP he has 148 goals and 152 assists for 300 points.
Ilya Kovalchuk was taken in the 2001 draft. In 621 GP he has 338 goals and 304 assists for 642 points.
With one more year of development, Kovalchuk has more goals than Semin has points. He has more assists than Semin has points. Kovalchuk has (as you’ll hear at least one more time before the day is done) more goals since 2001 than any other player int he league.
Kovalchuk’s per game production is better than Semin’s, and he’s played nearly twice as many games. And he’s done it on much worse teams. He stays healthier and plays better. In fact, there’s only one important area where Semin outpaces Kovalchuk: Semin has 323 career PIMs to Kovalchuk’s 437. So Kovalchuk also takes many fewer stupid penalties.

Ilya Kovalchuk has been much more likely to start out in the offensive zone than his teammates, and even though he lines up against his opponents’ weaker lines, his teams have been significantly outshot while he’s on the ice. In other words, he’s a seriously negative player at even-strength.
Starting in the O-zone is also true of 22/19/8. As well as many top lines in the league. His being so greatly outshot on the ice could be just as much a product of playing in Atlanta with a predominantly poor team as the heavy positive numbers for lines on SJS/CHI/WAS/PIT are because they are on very good teams.
I also don’t really like Wing-Center comparisons in general, they are two different positions with different responsibilities.
Player; % of time starting in the offensive zone; % of time finishing in the offensive zone; (per behindthenet.ca)

Kovalchuk’s main talent is the ability to shoot better than anyone in the NHL. In just about every other facet of the game that matters (defense, playmaking, positioning, even effort, as hard as that may be to believe), excepting stupid penalties and injuries, I’d rather have Alex Semin. I sincerely believe Kovalchuk is going to be paid more than he’s worth by some team and I desperately hope that it isn’t us.
If we had a HoF coach who could inspire a come-to-Jesus moment, like Bowman did with Yzerman, I’d be much happier about the prospect. As of now, I don’t see it actually benefiting us.

I have returned. Woo hoo, not that any of you missed me.
Anyway, Muir’s article was mildly interesting and it’s hard to really disagree. Main problem being Volchenkov is def going to want more than $5M and will more than likely get it. I understand the premise of getting a 2C at the deadline, especially since none of the UFAs really seem to be of any real quality. It would seem that you could pick up a rental at the deadline that could be much better than this crop. But again, is GMGM going to pay that premium? Seeing as most of us agree that a 2C is more of a priority, I would argue that you either trade for a good one, or wait until the deadline when you can try and get someone better.
Really a shame that SJS actually re-signed both Marleau and Pavelski…there was a glimmer of hope there.
Volchenkov isn’t worth what stupid amount of money someone’s going to pay him.

On this...
We are in complete agreement. I was speaking more of Muir’s reasoning for getting a Dman than his choice for said position.
Oh, his reasoning is solid, though he misses the boat on the 2C, just like everybody else. I think there are better fits out there for us than Volchenkov.
Hanlon's Razor: Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.
Why does he miss the boat on 2C? He doesn’t deny a need, just says that there will be better options later. which is probably true.
After reading yesterday’s comments, I’ve got a leaning towards Paul Martin in the mentoring role for Green. He might be more reasonably priced than Volchenkov.
Also – Volchenkov is still talking to Ottawa last I read. He might be willing to take a hometown discount for them.
Hanlon's Razor: Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.
Not totally against that one either. Although, thinking about it, I like this defense setup a little better:

The Thrashers have tried to sign goalie Johan Hedberg and defenseman Pavel Kubina to new deals, but so far they’ve come up empty.
Both players are expected to test the free agent market tomorrow, reports the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
“I have not been excited about what they have offered. I hope they make another offer before July 1,” Hedberg told the paper from Sweden.
Kubina, who made $5 million last season, has indicated several times that he’d like to stay in Atlanta, but he too is likely to test the waters.
“I’m just looking for a fair deal,” Kubina told the paper. “We can always talk. Like I said, I hope to come back. I like the direction of the team and I really like [new coach Craig Ramsay], but I’m looking for a fair deal.”

I’d consider bringing Gonchar in on a one or two year deal at the right price. As long as he’s not expected to log top-pair minutes, he could be the mentor Mike Green needs, has the Russian thing going for him and would be a capable power play QB.
He seems pretty adamant on wanting a three year deal, and I wouldn’t want to pay him what he thinks he’s worth. I’d pass.

Wrong skillset. You’d have to pay him a lot of money for his power play abilities that Green and Carlson can already give you. Better to pay a Willie Mitchell or Sean O’Donnell much less to just be a defenseman.

I have to admit, I’m coming around on his strategy – we knew without a shadow of a doubt that Hamhuis and Ellis were not coming back, so he acquires guys that could work out here. If Kostitsyn and Parent don’t sign, we lost nothing. If they do sign, they were acquired as if free agents, essentially.
Call me crazy, but Little Tits could be a revelation here. We’ll see.

I think being separated from his brother will actually help his game—he needs to grow up a bit from all reports I’ve read. Parent should be no higher than a 6/7 based upon what’s waiting in the wings, but he gives the Preds good depth now. Win for Poile on both fronts.

I heard him on XM yesterday afternoon. He sounded really excited to be in Montreal (only four hours from home), but aware that it might not work out there. Sounds like it won’t.

I think he’s leaving all avenues open but from that Q&A in the Star Tribune yesterday it sounded like he really wanted to play in the NHL.
I would bet there’s at least some interest around the League, but if there’s not that much and we go after him maybe he’ll take a cheaper, shorter deal to stabilize his reputation…
I’m pretty sure that’s what he’s aiming for. Like I said, he put up decent numbers in Florida a few years ago, and he’s still 31.

The guy’s supremely talented with great size and he can play with an edge. He just seems to have zero motivation to be great. Maybe a one-year deal with the lure of another big contract will do the trick. If he does decide to put it together, the team that signs him could have the steal of free agency.

Random thought/question: I know one of the sticking points everyone brings up with the FA centers is not wanting to commit to term because of the kids in the system. But if the price isn’t a killer and there’s no NMC, why not sign the guy? Worst case, you can probably move him in a year or two if he doesn’t crap the bed, no?
"It's always good to have vikings."
That’s what I’ve been saying! The fact is that the guys we’d probably want who are younger are going to want 3-year deal. Are we willing to pass on them just because of that? For one thing, longer deals can lessen a cap hit; and for another, as you said, it wouldn’t be impossible to move a guy as long as the deal isn’t ridiculous -and it’s GMGM so you know it won’t be (nor will it have an NMC). Plus there’s insurance in case the kids’ development takes longer than expected.
Obviously the ideal is a shorter term…but I’m with you, I don’t think the “worst case scenario” of taking a longer deal on is the worst thing in the world.
Term could be the killer for any number of FAs considering the Caps. Look at recent history… 1-2 year deals. There won’t be any “Ham” for dinner with that kind of term, and we can just sack Saku and say “No-vy” to Kovy while we’re at it.
If you've read this far...seek help.
Koivu is probably the only one on the Caps radar who would (and Mitchell among defensemen)
If you've read this far...seek help.
Interestingly, they’re the two guys I’d want.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
i think part of the answer is the assumption that its tough to trade guys in this league. especially with the unknowns about where the cap will be. so if you bring in a guy for 3-4 year deal and he does crap the bed, you are stuck w/ him and you hamstring yourself from being able to sign your own guys. laich, green, goalie, alzner, etc.
part of this may go to what tarik has been alluding to, which is whether GMGM has been too conservative in dealing prospects and siginig FA’s. at some point he’s going to have to make some bold moves that involve risk. he really hasnt been willing to do so over the past few years. now that the team is on the cusp, does he loosen up and swing for the fences a bit? my spidy sense says perhaps he does…
Just trying to capture the spirit of the thing...
As long as it’s not a 35 over contract, there’s always the buyout/minors option, as long as Ted and friends are willing to pay the freight. So in that instance, I guess it depends on how much money/cap hit is involved if it ends up being a mistake.
GMGM is so understated, a swing for the fences is not totally out of line here.

We have two faster, more skilled versions of Burish in Matt Bradley and Jason Chimera.
I think part of the reason those guys didn’t stir up more trouble this year is that they were under explicit instructions from the coaching staff not to make the team go 4-on-4.

On the Forecheck: preaching the Predators' gospel to the unwashed masses.

If the Caps are “defensively challenged,” I wonder what that says about the fourteen teams that finished with a worse GAA last season.
Of those teams, there are only three playoff teams: Colorado, Ottawa, and Pittsburgh (who, incidentally, gave up the most goals of any playoff team). And all three of those are teams whose defensive deficiencies are usually brought up in any conversation about them (less so with Pittsburgh, of course, than the other two).
Then again, Philly’s “beast” of a defense only let in five fewer goals than the Caps did all year. Nashville let in six fewer.
I do have to think that the Caps’ defense is going to be a great deal better this year. Carlson/Alzner are
a clear improvement over Pothier/Erskine/Jurcina/Sloan and if we bring in a mid-range free agent who is better than Shaone Morrisonn, we’ve significantly improved our blue line.
"Ovechkin, what is good in life?"
"To crush your enemies. To see them driven before you. And to hear the lamentations of their captain."
I’m skeptical. They already were like 6th in GA at 5-on-5, so improvement will come on special teams.

Noon.
"Ovechkin, what is good in life?"
"To crush your enemies. To see them driven before you. And to hear the lamentations of their captain."
You have to remember that before midnight, teams weren’t allowed to talk to free agents. Even if teams had a deal reached last night, they have to wait until this morning to pretend they didn’t break any NHL rules. So, pretty much you’re waiting until they shoot the shit for a while, and then they’ll let it go down.
"Don't mind WM...he's an all-around jerk."
Oh – wait, they can actually talk to them starting at midnight? I didn’t realize that. No wonder so many complicated deals get done at like 12:08.
I understood that they can’t talk in 12:00pm EDT today.
Every bursted bubble has a glory! Each abysmal failure makes a point! Every glowing path that goes astray, shows you how to find a better way. So every time you stumble never grumble. Next time you'll bumble even less!
I thought they became free agents at midnight last night, and could talk to anyone from then on.
"Don't mind WM...he's an all-around jerk."
Ah, I thought you were kidding – no, technically they don’t become free agents until noon. Guys like Gonchar and Michalek and Lombardi are still in talks (or were until a few minutes ago at least) this morning because of that.
And unless GMs either trade for their rights or get permission from the player’s current GM to talk to the guy, they’re not supposed to be discussing contracts until then. It’s why there were accusations of tampering w/ Ohlund last year, because he signed that crazy, complicated, long-term deal right out of the box.
Guaranteed GMs break that rule all the time, though. There’s just no way they don’t.
Thanks for the clarification – was trying to find it online and couldn’t.
Also, is it against the rules for a player or a player’s agent to contact a potential team he’d be interested in, and if not, is it against the rules for the GM to say what the teams budget for players of that caliber would be?
"Don't mind WM...he's an all-around jerk."
Don’t know for sure, but I think the answers to your questions are “yes” to the first and “no” to the second, as long as a team doesn’t mention a player.
I’m not sure why any GM would publicly tell their budget.
Every bursted bubble has a glory! Each abysmal failure makes a point! Every glowing path that goes astray, shows you how to find a better way. So every time you stumble never grumble. Next time you'll bumble even less!
I’m more saying the GMGM could make an offer without doing it, saying “Well, Ilya, a super star skilled forward like you, I’d consider giving him a 72 million dollar deal over 7 years.”
"Don't mind WM...he's an all-around jerk."
I don’t think he can say “Ilya.”
I also don’t think any GM would ever say that. If I’m a player and I heard that, then I accept nothing less.
Every bursted bubble has a glory! Each abysmal failure makes a point! Every glowing path that goes astray, shows you how to find a better way. So every time you stumble never grumble. Next time you'll bumble even less!
I’m saying if that happens, then Kovalchuk’s camp can say “Well, I don’t think I’d be a (insert team here) for less than 9 million a year” and then Brian Burke replies “Well, I think I could up a deal to 8.5 million a year, if a superstar winger would accept an additional year” or something like that. It’s hypothetical.
"Don't mind WM...he's an all-around jerk."
That would definitely be within the rules, as far as I know, but right on the edge, especially if Burke was responding to a question about Kovalchuk’s comment.
Every bursted bubble has a glory! Each abysmal failure makes a point! Every glowing path that goes astray, shows you how to find a better way. So every time you stumble never grumble. Next time you'll bumble even less!
I’m just thinking of legal ways you could negotiate prior to 12:00, which I could see happen if an agent knew a team had money and a need at his client’s position.
"Don't mind WM...he's an all-around jerk."
No need for “legal,” because illegal is already happening, IMHO.
Every bursted bubble has a glory! Each abysmal failure makes a point! Every glowing path that goes astray, shows you how to find a better way. So every time you stumble never grumble. Next time you'll bumble even less!

Which I always found funny, since there’s no such thing as a complicated NHL contract. There literally is a form contract they all sign. All you do is plug in the numbers per year, and you can add a very limited range of other terms such as no trade or no movement clauses and bonuses for bonus-eligible players. It’s not like they’re haggling over the language of the deal. It’s very straightforward.

I don’t know for sure. Google isn’t helping.
I doesn’t make sense to me that they can start talking last night, but just can’t announce deals. When I read that teams are still negotiating with their own players, it would seem like other teams can’t get in until noon.

It is interesting how complex deals are announced at 12:01, isn’t it?

oh, you mean like two years ago when Huet bolted for Chicago at 12:02, and Theo was signed at 12:03?

Just as two examples.
It takes the average McDonald’s longer to negotiate with its cashiers at minimum wage, than it does these guys.

What do people know/think about Andreas Lilja? He’s got a wealth of big game experience and has learned at the feet of the greatest defenseman of our era, but he’s also got concussion issues. That, and his BTN numbers aren’t all that great.
I don’t watch Detroit all that much, though, so I can’t say much about him. Would he be any sort of upgrade over Erskine? Perhaps a last-ditch option in case none of the other D we want work out?
"Ovechkin, what is good in life?"
"To crush your enemies. To see them driven before you. And to hear the lamentations of their captain."
From what I saw, Detroit did a great job of hiding him from people and he seemed like the option behind Rafalski, Lidstrom, Lebda, and Kronwall. A 5-6 guy on a team like that? eh…
"Don't mind WM...he's an all-around jerk."
Lebda’s also a free agent, but I’m a little more wary of him because he’s tiny. Like, Marty St. Louis tiny.

At least when Lemieux and Bourque threw the cup off Lemieux’s roof into the pool they had the decency to be drunk

…well, he might have had a beer or twelve. But throwing it into a pool is better than dropping it off a roof. What a dodo.
Coulda had his kid poop in it ;)

I’d like to applaud you both for having back-to-back comments with the word “poop” in it. Well done, well done.

strangely enough, I’m ready STFU parents and the theme of the day is…..poop. I’m starting to feel a little icky.

After my sister had her baby I almost wanted to start a drinking game for the number of times the word “poop” was said in her house…between her and my brother-in-law I would have been wasted within an hour.
lol, that’s how I feel. and just as my sister’s kid grew out of the “cause mom to talk about poop all the time” stage, my brother had twins (twice as much poop!), and then Mr. B’s sister just had a kid (who I blame the playoffs on. Everything was going swimmingly until that kid was born!) Some days my facebook feed is poop news galore; I hate it. Today, I plan on endlessly providing status updates as it related to free agency, just to drive my friends crazy.

maybe combine the two: Kovalchuk signs with Oilers, every GM poops themselves and waves goodbye to a star

The hell is Weber doing fighting with a 5-0 lead? That’s just being a dick unless Lebda took a run at someone.
"Don't mind WM...he's an all-around jerk."
Thats Lilja, because Wheeler asked what I knew about him. And yeah, Lilja took a ‘run’, so to speak. I’d say he had it coming. Weber made his brain bleed, literally, and he had headaches every day for over a year. Felt pretty awful for him.

Well, the world will not come to a crashing halt if he signs at 2:30 PM either.

Please don’t write “tick tock.” Those words bring right back to that fucking Ke$ha song my daughter listens to incessantly.
I’m guessing it will be at least an hour before it’s out of my head. :-(

Oops. Sorry! :) Here’s how out-of-touch I am – I’ve never heard that song. The beauty of being in my late 20s with no kids and having a strong hatred of the radio.
same here. And when I do listen to the radio, it’s only the rare occasions I’m in the car, there’s usually some hockey or baseball game on.

Haha, Ted “called out” Peerless.
Because now I can justify browsing and commenting during the work day with the argument that I am promoting my business.
Ted’s Take is blocked here, what does he say?
Hanlon's Razor: Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.
We did kinda sign a big time free agent already this off season. His name is Nicklas Backstrom. We signed him to a ten year deal. We took him off of free agency later in his career. Doesn’t that feel good? We don’t have to trade anyone to get under the cap. We are managing our roster and salary cap issues quite well, I believe.
That move was consistent with our plan, and is the kind of commitment that is key to our franchise. Draft, develop, and keep our core team together. Treat our own great players like they are unrestricted free agents.
We also will add lots of our young prospects to the lineup next season. We have a great pipeline of home grown talent. That is key, too, as a deliverable to our fan base. I believe we be will better next season than we were last season.
I believe in what we have more than what we don’t have.
Don’t expect us to go crazy in free agency. We don’t need to do it. We don’t have cap space to do it. As we want flexibility and optionality for our club, we want the ability to reward our own players when they play well for us. That is what we believe. That is the plan we will continue to execute against.
Specific enough Peerless? :-) Go Caps.

…and for the life of me, I’m trying to figure out which post offended him. I wasn’t aware I was calling out the Caps for a lack of specifics on free agency.
If you've read this far...seek help.
I think it’s the “”http://peerlessprognosticator.blogspot.com/2010/06/unforseen-problem-when-buying-new-team.html" >Unforseen Problem" post. I don’t think he’s offended, just that his humor ain’t hitting the mark.

I assumed it was your interpretation of GMGM speak. I thought Ted’s comment was made in humor, not from a standpoint of being offended.

Ted’s Take is blocked? Wow. For what reason?

Reason given is personal blogging and social networking. (Go figure.) Our Websense is a little bit crack-addled here – it whitelists YouTube and permits Gchat but blocks Ted’s Take.

The other day at work I was trying to check the MedImmune website for job listings for an old coworker, and the job search in USA part was blocked due to reason: Illegal Drugs. But I could still do a job search for European MedImmune jobs. Too bad my friend lives in Silver Spring.
