good thing that nyls for buff trade never went down. who needs that kind of violence on the rink? at least it would have given the rink’s spelling police something to do. ever since fedorov left, it’s been a bit boring.

It’s funny. Everyone thinks Pronger’s this giant of a guy. While he is 6’6" he only weights 220, not a lot for a guy his size. Byfuglien outweighs him by 37 pounds. Hell, Schultz outweighs him by 10 pounds.

by b.orr4 on Jun 7, 2010 9:13 AM EDT up reply actions

I read that Pronger keeps his weight around 215 to keep his skating strong and so he can pace himself through a full regular and playoff season. He’s great at conserving/extending his energy on the ice.

by Elliotte on Jun 7, 2010 7:20 AM EDT reply actions

Not all concussions are equal, of course, and I think they’re a lot more common (and undiagnosed) than people would like to think, so who knows what to make of the three. But yeah, it’s probably something to keep in mind.

It’s something to worry about. Each and every concussion leaves you more vulnerable to ones in the future. On top of that, each and every concussion significantly lowers your mental ability as you age. It’s a pretty big deal and the only reason more people aren’t concerned about it is how much the NFL fought any of the concussion studies from becoming part of the public discourse.

what are the details here? because i very much remember the concussion studies being discussed publicly, and i very much remember the league being taken to task for downplaying them. what did the NFL do to prevent the articles from gaining traction?

by Natty Bumppo on Jun 7, 2010 10:04 AM EDT up reply actions

From what I recall, they came out with their own “study” which discounted the results of the study that looked unfavorably upon concussions. There was a big thing on HBO “Real Sports” about it.

I also find it strange that only 4 non-Canadians have won the trophy (Brian Leetch, Malkin, Zetterberg, and Nick Lidstrom)

Just to flesh it out a bit, you go:

Green – Mitchell
Potischultz
Carlznerson

Potischultz was such an effective shutdown pair in ’09, and I was never really a fan of Green-Schultz. And this setup lets you flatten out the minutes for everyone.

If Mitchell has limited ice time in the first half of the season, who cares? It’s the playoffs that matter. And maybe he can teach Alzner and Schultz a thing or two.

That TSN writeup was great. None of that Green sucks crap, or they’re chokers, or pressed to the cap, etc.

What I think Green needs is a really good mentor. I guess Lidstrom had Larionov, and I’m sure Pronger (MacInnis?) and Niedermayer had one or more as well. I don’t think anyone on that list fits the bill for the moment, though they may for Schultz. Like DMG was saying earlier this year, Niedermayer would I think be ideal, but he has little reason to leave Anaheim to play elsewhere. I don’t see any other skating defensemen, really. Campbell is on a bad contract, Boyle isn’t a good guy, Lidstrom won’t go anywhere, Rafalski isn’t going to go anywhere, and so on. Any skating veteran defensemen out there that could be available?

I really think that mentoring is important in this league (and in most team sports). And that can range from someone to show them the ropes on the ice to just being there as someone to talk to.

When Jagr (everyone’s favorite) first came to the NHL as an 18-year-old, he couldn’t speak the language, in a place thousands of miles from family and friends, and completely lost. The Pens traded for Jiri Hrdina, a 33-year-old Czech on the last legs of his short NHL career. (Of course in 5 NHL seasons, he won 3 Stanley Cups.)

He translated for Jagr, helped him with his coaches and teammates, and made him more comfortable. Now I’m not saying he saved his career or anything, but he made the transition from playing in the Czech league to the NHL a lot easier.

I don’t know if this is true or not, but don’t you think that Zubrus helped out Ovechkin a lot in his first season?

And Nylander for Backstrom, I’d think. Hopefully 19 for Johansson now.

The thing that’s interesting is that it’s only a 3-year deal, meaning he could come back and still get a huge contract once it’s done.

Still, I doubt he takes the bait.

That being said this is one of the reason I like SBNation blogs. They are orgnazined in a way that you can self select what content you wish to view without wasting time wading through what you don’t want to view.

Nice Mackan write up by Cap Offense. The more I think about Mackan, maybe it’s more likely he comes to camp competing for 3LW or 4LW. Looking at his progression, it’s been nice but can’t really see him as ready for a C job in the NHL just yet. (And maybe it’s a bit of wishful thinking that a LW job will be open by training camp.)

by Reckless on Jun 7, 2010 11:33 AM EDT reply actions

I do think it’s a little strange that we hope he’s gonna come in and play C. I mean, he’s a natural LW, isn’t he?

by DrinkingPartner on Jun 7, 2010 11:35 AM EDT up reply actions

No, he’s a center who played a lot of LW for Farjestads, especially after he came back from WJC. He (I think, and maybe Ice Warrior can help me) had a wrist injury when he came back from WJC that perhaps hindered his ability to play at C for a period of time, or maybe it was just that FBK was structuring its lines into playoff formations.

by EmilyB on Jun 7, 2010 11:42 AM EDT up reply actions

He is a natural center but so was a lot of other players that now plays LW/RW in the nhl.
Having said that I hope and think that they gonna give him a chance to show what he can do as a center.
He’s been doing just fine as a LW but IMO he’s better at C. I don’t think that the wrist injury had anything to do with him playing LW he did that at times before WJC as well.

What can I say I’m a JP fangirl. I will follow him into the darkest and filthiest of alleys, even the comment section at Puck Daddy.

by Malin A on Jun 7, 2010 7:00 PM EDT up reply actions

We are either two Bears losses or four Bears wins away from Capitals Farm Report: Graduation Day, and I will prolly explore this idea a little bit.

But he was drafted to be a center, so that’s where I’d expect to see him.

by EmilyB on Jun 7, 2010 11:38 AM EDT up reply actions

ultimately, I think that’s right. just not sure he’s ready yet. A lot probably depends on what else they do at the position over the summer. I’d love to seem him make the roster and get a few NHL games in. Maybe then he’ll realize that Hershey would be a better place for him to develop (and have the oppty for call ups) rather than heading back to the SEL in the event he needs a little more seasoning.

by Reckless on Jun 7, 2010 11:52 AM EDT up reply actions

I note that Walker and Corvo know they are not coming back. So the Caps are still deciding what they want to do with Belanger and BMo. Hmmm.

by EmilyB on Jun 7, 2010 11:54 AM EDT up reply actions

I could see one coming back, but not both. And I hope it’s neither — go get the quality 2C and let the kids fight for 3C.

by Reckless on Jun 7, 2010 12:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Not me. This team needs to get older not younger at key positions like center and defense. I’d bet that either BMo or Belanger is signed for that third line center spot and MP gets the first call-up for injury replacement. If the Caps come out of camp with MP as their #3 center, then McPhee hasn’t done his job.

by b.orr4 on Jun 7, 2010 1:39 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree on older, not younger at D. I’d like a greybeard.

I disagree on 2C. I don’t care if they get older or younger, but they sure as hell need to get better. I’m not a fan of either BMo or Belanger in that role.

Atta dinnin stick a who!

by Gould Old Days on Jun 7, 2010 2:17 PM EDT up reply actions

I would fully support Belanger at 3C if salary cap isn’t an issue. But if they sign a legit 2C (probably $3.5-4mm) and an upgrade at D (probably around $2M), I doubt there’s enough $$$ left for Belanger. Maybe BMo but I’m not sure he’s what I would want as a 3C. Maybe another cheap vet — Dominic Moore? But having MP, or Mackan or Kyle Wilson or even Steckel/Gordo fill the roll to the deadline (where 3Cs are much easier to come by) is far preferable to me than spending $2M on a 3C and depriving the team from filling needs elsewhere.

by Reckless on Jun 7, 2010 2:18 PM EDT up reply actions

I actually wouldn’t mind seeing Brooks Laich in the 3C role if it means Eric Fehr gets 2nd line minutes. Semin – 2C- Fehr would be a pretty sweet line.

This was a while ago, but other than his bad start, why did the Caps fire Bruce Cassidy? He had a successful first season and a bad first half to his next season, but he was certainly better than Hanlon (the guy who replaced him).

Now saying Schultz isn’t putting up enough points, so he’s not a good 1st pairing D-man. I guess Rod Langway wasn’t a good 1st pairing D-man. Looking for numbers to support ones argument out of desperation gives you gems like this.

Decent player (if not a bit overrated and overpaid) but Ovechkin-spearing aside I’ve never seen someone go into a scrum with his stick parallel to the ice as much as Briere does. And for all the talk about size not being an issue, he certainly has no problems going after bigger guys and then letting HIS team’s bigger guys clean up the mess.

Stanley Cup Ratings

The overnight ratings for Game 5 just came out and the good news is that Game Five this season was up 33% from Game Five last year. And while that’s great, the NHL ratings were less than half of those for Game Two of the NBA Finals. Which begs the question, why the hell did the NHL/NBC/Bettman purposely go head to head against the NBA Finals when they could have played Sunday afternoon or better yet, played tonight when there was no competition for viewers?

There’s no conflict with the United Center. They have nothing scheduled for June, so they could easily have moved Game Five to Monday. And doing so wouldn’t have impacted the next game in Philly since it was already scheduled for Wednesday. Of course, moving the game to Monday would have meant bumping that huge hit Last Comic Standing.

Copper and Blue talks about sending two offer sheets to the same team to force the team with the RFAs to choose between them.

Caps notes:

Washington Capitals

Eric Fehr ($800,000)
Jeff Schultz ($700,000)
Tomas Fleischmann ($700,000)

    * Like the Blackhawks’ RFAs, none of the Capitals on this list are worthy of a large contract. But Jeff Schultz is an underrated beauty of a stay-at-home guy with size and skill. He’s easily worth $2,750,000 – $3,100,000 and a team like the Colorado Avalanche needs a defenseman just like Schultz. They could also send an offer to Fehr for $1,500,000 to try and wedge Schultz out of Washington.
