Capitals Select Philipp Grubauer
With the 112th pick in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft (acquired from Toronto for the 116th and 146th pick),the Washington Capitals have selected Philipp Grubauer, G, Windsor (OHL). From the team's release:
Grubauer, a German-born goaltender who split this past season with Belleville and Windsor of the Ontario Hockey League, led Windsor to the Memorial Cup (championship of the Canadian Hockey League). He posted a 23-15-2-5 record with a 2.86 goals-against average and a .911 save percentage. Grubauer also led Germany to the gold medal in the second division of the World Junior Championship, elevating the Germans to the top group for 2011.

A goalie, hm. I guess since our latest G prospects have progressed so quickly, we need to stock the lower ranks.
John Carlson - Glory follows him.
Like the pick. A lot.
He’s mentioned in this article. This stands out to me:
Grubauer has been a bit of a forbotten man for the Spitfires, because of their mass of offensive players. Don’t sleep on him. He went 5-0 with a 0.64 goals against for Germany in an Under 20 tournament, a performance that helped Germany gain a spot in the 2011 World Junior Championships.

Wait What? Another goalie, to sit behind Varly, and Neuvy and Holtby.
Also, what “-y” name is he gonna get, Grubby?
German goalie + Washington Capitals. It worked last time!

They didn't think he'd be around at 116?
Must’ve had their sights set on him.
Obstreperously Avatarless
He could have gone in the 2nd round as well.

Looks like a great pick for where they took him. Yet again it looks like the Caps got a player that could have/should have gone quite a bit earlier.`
I waited all year for this?
Caps have a great eye for Russian wingers, Swedish center, and German goaltenders.

I’m still pissed about that DET pick ;) They own the market on Swedish picks.
I like the goalie pick. You can never have enough goalie prospects IMO, and our lower ranks are sorta bare now.
Jarnkrok, the consensus sleeper pick around here.

#Caps take Caleb Herbert, a Minnesota HS kid, with the No. 142 pick of the 2010 NHL draft.

Status for next year
Well, back from my coaching clinic. I like this pick, got to see him a few times last year when Windsor played in Brampton, Barrie and Mississauga. The only concern I have is how much he gets to play next year. If I recall, didn’t Windsor just get Campbell (1st rounder) to commit?

Yeah they did. I’d be surprised if Phillip wasn’t traded. They may hold him for a little bit but he has too much value to sit on the bench so Windsor will probably move him for immediate help.

I do enjoy when we take OHL guys as I get to watch them.

I seem to recall...
…the Caps having success with another draft choice of a young German goaltender a couple of decades ago. ;-)
