Fowler may not even be the best defenseman in the draft.

He’s not clearly head and shoulders above everyone else, like Hedman was last season. He’s still the highest rated defender available, but the smart money for best player is definitely on the field.

Put it this way – he’s the right pick for Florida who needs the puck mover. Otherwise, I like Gudbranson.

Put it this way – Gudbranson is touted as a physical stay at home defender. When was the last time the physical stay at home punishing defender actually lived up to their hype? Given the choice again, does Luke Schenn go where he was chosen, or does a guy like Tyler Myers, MDZ, or even John Carlson or Luca Sbisa jump ahead of him?
I waited all year for this?
Huh; I consider Gudbranson to be a bit more well rounded than that, but I definitely see your point there.

I think Columbus would elect for Fowler, mainly because they really, REALLY need offense from the blue line, namely a power play quarterback. Fowler would fit in well there.
Then again, they have to pick whoever FLA doesn’t pick.

Yeah, and based on the reputations and styles I have the three ranked: Fowler, Gormley, Gudbranson. I also think “The Undertaker” is going to be overrated when we look back.

Yeah he’s supposed to be the toughest guy in the draft and he’s a late riser in the ranks. I just don’t think “toughest guy in the draft” means that much. Bogosian and Schenn were tougher than Doughty, but how’d that turn out? I could go on and on and on.
I waited all year for this?
Don’t sleep on Bogosian. He’s obviously not Doughty…but he’s damn good. Schenn I don’t care for.
Anytime a guy’s calling card is fighting, I probably don’t take him.

I love Bogo, he’ll be a great player. I just think that if you put too much value on “toughness” and physicality you would have taken him or Schenn before Doughty and you would be a total ass. Bogo is good, Doughty is generational.
I waited all year for this?
Yeah Doughty will have at least 3 Norrises before he is done I think.

I’d heard that Fowler is supposed to be a world-class skater by the time he’s finished developing, which I think helps his case in the end.

by Knee high to a duck on Jun 25, 2010 6:15 PM EDT up reply actions
Well it depends on where you look. Fowler is ranked the 3rd of those D some places. I don’t watch enough CHL to really know who is the best, but I have a hard time understanding how Fowler actually hurt his draft stock this year. If Cam Fowler is from Thunder Bay, ON and he played about 30 minutes a night for Team Canada en route to a WJC Gold and a Memorial Cup then I imagine the hype would be quite a bit higher. He started as the best D of the group, he had a huge year both individually and as part of teams, and yet two guys that started the year lower than him leapfrogged him without the same individual or team success. Hmmmm….
I waited all year for this?
My opinion is that is mostly because Fowler is the offensive Dman of the group, which usually hurts the stock more than helps. The other two are much better in their own end, but still have some offensive capabilities. I do not think it a USA vs Canadian thing. I have heard more about Fowler then the other guys for the last two years…living here in Canada. That actually may be another reason…more time to notice the warts. Not that he has many.
by CapsFanSince1979 on Jun 25, 2010 5:47 PM EDT up reply actions
Yeah… Fowler is a liability in his own end. Such a liability, in fact, that he shut down Taylor Hall in the WJC. Team USA had either Carlson or Fowler on the ice at all times, and against Canada Fowler was matched against Hall. He basically shut him down but for a terrible fluke goal. He was a staple of the USA PK, ES, and PP. I get that he’s thin and needs to get better in his own end, but he’s already got NHL skating, can play the puck, and isn’t a complete liability in his own end.
I waited all year for this?
And even if he is thin, if someone can skate like that and has great hockey sense, they can still do okay. Right, Mr. Keith?
Only YOU can prevent idiots from commenting!
by Knee high to a duck on Jun 25, 2010 6:17 PM EDT up reply actions
Yeah, I’m sure Keith isn’t all that thin, he’s an adult. But you look at a 6’1" 18 year old who can skate and play with the puck and you are going to say “he’s a little thin”? Makes no sense. You know for a fact that he will fill out and become bigger. You also know that skating is the hardest thing to develop if they don’t have it. No-brainer. Look at the elite level D right now and tell me which is the big, mean, tough, physical prototype from the 80s-90s.
I waited all year for this?
Weber and Pronger are pretty badass, to name two. But past those guys, and maybe Orpik, not many.

A) Weber is a phenomenal skater and has great puck skills. B) Pronger has been around since the early 90s and is a first ballot HoF. If Gudbranson was billed as a guy that could skate and shoot and pass and liked the physical game then it would be one thing (and that would be more like how Bogosian was billed) but Gudbranson is just the typical tough S@H guy, and that concerns me.
I waited all year for this?

Seguin has a hell of a wrist shot, but he’s not really like Stammer. Steve Stamkos is as pure a scorer as you’ll see, while Seguin is more a playmaker and two-way center. His rep is that he’s not as dynamic as Hall is on offense, but better in his own end and possessing the puck.

I’m sure Seguin can play wing, but he’s a Center. You don’t draft a C to play him at W. It’s just bad planning. You have so many picks and already have a great team… and oh-by-the-way need some goal scoring. Hall is a perfect fit and you guys don’t need to stockpile draft picks (and EDM does) so it makes perfect sense. I just think EDM knows this and will extort BOS. If BOS gets stubborn and takes Seguin to play W that will be a terrible terrible decision. But I’d gladly take Bergeron when you inevitably have to shake up the roster to make it work.
I waited all year for this?
Edmonton has been calling the Bruins all day to get the no. 2 as well as no. 1. So far Chiarelli has said no, but they’re still trying.

Exactly. And BOS has other picks that could make sense for EDM. If BOS offers the 2 and the 32 for the 1 I don’t know how EDM turns it down. They still get a franchise talent, who plays the position they actually need, and then they get another pick that is in the heart of the quality prospects (and gives them back-to-back picks to start the 2).
I waited all year for this?
Exactly so. Seguin could turn into a Toews-type player. If that’s the case, I don’t know how you pass on him given their lack of depth at C and with MPS looking to make the jump this upcoming season.

No, he has one more year on his deal at 2 mill. Then RFA. So now FLA has yet another first round pick? Tallon ain’t wasting time. GMGM should be lighting him up asking what he wants for Weiss in addition to the 26. Flash and the 26 for Weiss!
I waited all year for this?
Flash and the 26Roman Josi and the 18th for Weiss!

I wonder what this means for all the mocks that had Jared Tinordi going 25th to VAN – Ballard is locked up through 2014, so that need is addressed in the near term. I know that Tinordi wasn’t likely to make the team until about that time anyway, but it does make me cock an eyebrow a bit.

Which means he’s been talking on four phones at the same time and plans on trading everyone but Fleischmann, Sloan and Bourque.

Real_ESPNLeBrun NHL GM tells me Hawks want 1st-round pick and a prospect for Versteeg
by CapsFanSince1979 on Jun 25, 2010 6:42 PM EDT up reply actions
I read somewhere that Chicago particularly wants to trade their players to struggling teams in the East.
Versteeg ending up in Florida makes too much sense.
"Ovechkin, what is good in life?"
"To crush your enemies. To see them driven before you. And to hear the lamentations of their captain."
Trading players to struggling teams in the opposite conference is a great strategy.
The Blackhawks trading with Florida, TB, Isles, or Toronto would make sense.
Rocking the Red since 1975
Versteeg to Florida makes a lot of sense in particular because:
1) The Dale Tallon connection;
2) Florida has two first-round picks (#15 and, apparently, #25) at their disposal;
3) Florida has lots of prospects, particularly at D, and they’re likely to be drafting another one with the #3 pick;
4) They need a wing to replace Nathan Horton.
No idea if it happens. But it seems like the sort of thing that might.
"Ovechkin, what is good in life?"
"To crush your enemies. To see them driven before you. And to hear the lamentations of their captain."
Yes, it does.
I hadn’t analyzed the other teams but would not be surprised if Tampa has plenty of prospects to cough up in a deal.
Rocking the Red since 1975
They have a bunch of projects, but no one in the system that’s really going to blow anyone’s skirt up. The young players that would make an impact are already with the big club, or need a lot more developmental time.
Only YOU can prevent idiots from commenting!

He would be a great addition for them, but it would guarantee they have no draft this year. If Buff was a 1 and a prospect, how could Versteeg be much lower? What prospect does PIT have to package?
I waited all year for this?
I don’t know about you, but I like Versteeg going forward better than I like Buff. There’s no question that Versteeg has more skill and plays in more phases, while Buff has had motivation issues following him around. I’m not convinced that he’s the player we saw in the playoffs against SJS.

Think it comes down to what you want – all-around, shutdown or the pp quarterback. Gudbranson’s got a good leader-type personality, and he’s not one-dimensional. He’ll never be a Greenie, but he’s got a hell of a bomb and he’ll be great for FLA. Really smart guy.
Skating rules in the current incarnation of the NHL. Gundbranson is almost Pronger’s size, but I’ve not heard he’s that kind of passer or that kind of PP QB. I stand by my assertion that any of the three I mentioned would have been better choices – it’s not like Fowler or Gormley are dumb, either.

Per Bob Mackenzie, Ranked 9th.
No player in this year’s NHL entry draft has come as far as quickly as Ryan Johansen. A year ago, the big, rangy centre was struggling to get fourth-line minutes in the British Columbia Junior League and he was not on the radar for Hockey Canada and any of its elite international competitions such as U-18 or others. As a kid, he didn’t always play AAA and he is by very definition a late-blooming underdog who has emerged in a big way in his one and only season in the WHL. He’s still physically immature and scouts project he could become a large physical presence at centre ice in the mold of a Joe Thornton or Eric Staal. Scouts don’t necessarily see the really high-end skill level/scoring ability of Staal, but still are excited by his strong two-way play and ability to make plays and dominate a game. The theory is that he’s only now discovering how good he can be. He was ranked No. 19 on TSN’s mid-season list and has bulled his way into blue-chip territory.
Shit, sounds like RAHJC, a little, doesn’t it?

I’d rather have Gormley. Fowler’s good offensively, but that’s it. I don’t think he’s strong on the puck, and his defensive play scares me, from what I’ve seen, especially at the WJC.
No way, Fowler plays just fine in his own end – you don’t get 30 minutes a night in the WJC if you don’t. He skates like the wind and moves the puck beautifully, which are puck possession skills; that means that he’s creating defense through offense.
Only YOU can prevent idiots from commenting!
by Knee high to a duck on Jun 25, 2010 8:32 PM EDT up reply actions
we really don’t agree with each other do we? That’s just what I think. Was he the best dman on the US team? For sure. I just didn’t think he’s as good defensively and it scares me a little, especially when I compare to Gormley, who from what I’ve seen was so very good with the puck. Makes extremely smart decisions.
This is a crazy ass draft.
