Mike Green in regular season- Norris Canadiate. Mike Green in Playoffs- Nowhere to be found
This tells me that the Caps are going after a free agent defenseman. They could have probably resigned Jurcina without a great deal of effort as insurance for Carlson and Alzner. But it seems the Caps, who probably will have:
Green-Schultz
Poti-
Carlson-Alzner
Are going to want to upgrade that second pair, hopefully with a defenseman with some attitude. Mitchell might be the target there.

volchenkov. i will no get off this bandwagon till he signs somewhere else. i still think caps are the most likely landing spot for him

I don’t want Volchenkov. He’s too injury-prone. Guy’s only played over 70 games twice in his career, that was 5 years ago.

Volchenkov’s a risk. As YLM mentions, his style of play gets him hurt. He’s going to get paid a lot of money. The Caps should already have four or five legit top four NHL defensemen by the end of the season. Love the player, not sure about the fit in DC.
Yup. Guy can play, but someone’s going to throw a stupid amount of money at him, and I don’t think its worth it to throw a long-term, big money deal at a guy who’s only going to play 65 games a year. If they’re going that route, i’d rather have Michalek.

I hope GMGM can find a second FA defenseman as well, since the injury replacements are Erskine and Sloan assuming one FA signed.

Yeah, I was waiting to hear about whether or not they were going to bring Juice back and maybe put Carlson with Poti and Alzner with Juice but if he is gone then they obviously need to get a defenseman now. Would you keep Schultz and Green together though? Wouldn’t it be better to have the new, hopefully more experienced FA defenseman, with Green?
Lobbies: Green, Carlson, Orlov
Sounds like Green also expects additions from the outside to the blue line. It can’t be just the addition of Carlzner.
Q: What are your thoughts on potential changes on the Caps’ blue line?
A: It’s something management feels needs to be changed. We’ll see. Nothing is set in stone yet. We need to make some adjustments and we trust our management will do a good job.
"I’m very happy to hear the news," Ovechkin said when he heard about Backstrom's longterm contract--"because he’s one of the top centers in the world, one of my best friends and we want to play together for a long time. He’s a guy who wants to stay in one place and be comfortable and win, just like me. We talk all the time about playing together, and we talked after the playoffs about how we can win in Washington."

Mitchell been weight training and bike riding for about two weeks. The tricky part is that he doesn’t plan to skate until mid-July and free agency obviously opens July 1st.
I’ve been in the it’s maybe worth taking a chance on him camp but I hoped he was a little bit closer to put on skates than that. Bike riding is one thing but that only tell you so much.
What can I say I’m a JP fangirl. I will follow him into the darkest and filthiest of alleys, even the comment section at Puck Daddy.
Same article does say…
Willie Mitchell vows to play hockey next season and the 33-year old defenceman told The Vancouver Sun he is finally symptom-free after suffering a concussion on January 16th. He has resumed strenuous training.
“I’ve got a big part of my life back,” Mitchell said. “I have no uncertainty; I want to play hockey. It took a little longer than I expected [to recover], but I’m looking forward to next season. I’m really excited. I feel normal again.”
That’s slightly rosier, I think. But yeah.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
A few weeks is going to cost him a helluva lot of money, and given the uncertainty, then I don’t think the Caps would/should be going after him as the FA defenseman to plug a hole. But that should not mean an end to the search.
If you've read this far...seek help.
If they get Mitchell, I’d like to see:
Alzner – Green
Poti- Schultz
Mitchell – Carlson
Even strength time is split evenly between all 6. You have no top pair, no bottom pair at ES.
Carlson and Green share the bulk of the PP load.
Poti-Schultz takes the hardest 40% of the PK time; Alzner-Green and Mitchell-Carlson each take 30%.
One of my main goals with this is to get Green’s PT down.

regarding Green-Schultz and Mitchell-Carlson
Is that break up of the Hershey D-line more to do with Green needed a good, smart, and quickdefensive partner, or the fact that Carlson is good enough to adapt to whomever he is paired with?
If you want to survive out here, you've got to know where your towel is.
i meant Green-Alzner, not Schultz
If you want to survive out here, you've got to know where your towel is.
A lot of us think Schultz is not the ideal partner for Green since he’s not all that mobile. When it really counts—in the playoffs—Green will be getting most of the minutes, and we want the best possible partner for him, which theoretically would be Alzner.

Z. Michalek. I’d hand him a 5-year deal, if possible. I wouldn’t hand Volchenkov the same.
Barring that, trade Fleischmann to the Blues for Jackman. Not as good as Mitchell in his prime, but I don’t think Mitchell’s going to get back to his prime for a long while, if ever.

i say we go after nabokov as a veteren galtender
Mike Green in regular season- Norris Canadiate. Mike Green in Playoffs- Nowhere to be found
Nabokov is likely to command starter money, and even if he doesn’t match the contract that is expiring, he should command at least “Jose Theodore” money. I don’t think the Caps are going to spend $4.5 million on a goaltender when they want to see what Varlamov or Neuvirth can do with starter minutes. They might be looking for a veteran backup, but at less than half the cap hit Theodore had last year.

I don’t think they go after a veteran goaltender until the trade deadline. This team is more than capable of notching 110 points without one or at least getting the 3rd seed with Varlamov and Neuvirth manning the pipes. Also, if there is an injury this could expedite that process.

It just goes to show, every time you think “sign (fill in the blank)” — every single time — you have to think of the effect on the cap and your ability to sign your own players, and you have to think in “years,” not just “this year.”
This isn’t fantasy hockey.

Why do teams win in a salary cap era? Because they do two things financially — they get value out of their own players on entry level deals (who they then sign for next contracts at amounts that are likely less than they would get if they went the UFA route, see: Backstrom, Nicklas), and they don’t take on too many “second bump” free agents — those players who already have substantial contracts who are going to get a “second bump” to the next level. Volchenkov made $2.5 million last year, Nabokov $5.4 million. Someone will pay Volchenkov $5.0 million; shoot. It might even be a smart move (like Los Angeles signing Rob Scuderi to a bump-up deal, and he ended up being Drew Doughty’s chaperone). Nabokov might get $5 million from someone (shoot, he might set six), and it might be a good deal for them (unless it’s Philly, in which case I’ll be just really cheesed off). But it isn’t a good idea one team to get both, especially having issues of their own players to sign on next deals, as JP pointed out.
If you've read this far...seek help.
well, chicago did it a bit differently by signing second bump guys like hossa (third/fouth bump), huet, campbell. they won the cup but we all know they are in cap hell and although they have some top notch young talent, they will have a tough time filling in around them.
however, i think the point you make is correct if you want to set yourself up to win over a longer period of time than just one year. this is why i dont believe the caps will chase volchenkov/nabokov or other sexy FA’s unless they are willing to sign for less time/money than we all expect they will be offered.
Just trying to capture the spirit of the thing...
by dcsportsfan1 on Jun 23, 2010 9:26 AM EDT up reply actions
Chicago is the exception that proves the rule. Now, they have to shed salary, and they appear likely to get only semi-firesale prices for some of the assets. They went all-in this past year. Good for them. But they’d better enjoy the memory.
The other side of the equation is the Rangers earlier in the decade. They persisted in this model, and it was a disaster.

no thank you. I’m fine with a Varly/Neuvy tandem and bringing up Holtby if needed or a taste of an NHL game.
"I’m very happy to hear the news," Ovechkin said when he heard about Backstrom's longterm contract--"because he’s one of the top centers in the world, one of my best friends and we want to play together for a long time. Pass. At some point you have to give Varlamov and Neuvirth the chance to fight it out at the NHL level. Varlamov can clearly play in the NHL; Neuvirth’s had success in the NHL and has nothing left to prove in the AHL. Now’s the time.
I’m comfortable going with the two kids in net until I’m not. And I’m comfortable with the Caps waiting until then to address the issue if/when it arises.

The odd part of this is that if the Caps are going to make a decision on their prospect goalies, it’s Neuvirth they have to get a better handle on. Varlamov has enough of a rookie book on him to be able to make some preliminary assessments. Neuvirth, though, has not had but sporadic opportunities at this level. Yeah, he’s a Calder Cup hero, but…

Trading Semin
For all the advocates of trading Semin and replacing his cap hit with a 2nd line center, who would then replace Semin’s scoring? Laich and Fehr both play a crash the net style, so I don’t see them being a good fit together. Flash has probably topped out, and there’s no one else I see in the organization who’s ready for duty as a 2nd line wing. I definitely don’t want to lose him to free agency for nothing, bit if he leaves this year that creates a hole, so any return better be breathtaking.
by RPI93 on Jun 23, 2010 9:09 AM EDT via mobile reply actions
I’m not advocating anything, but maybe the 2C could help replace Semin’s scoring. We did score the most goals last season in the league but that was hardly relevant in the playoffs. Ask me if I’d rather have Ryan Kesler playing 2C or Semin given our recent playoff history?
4th Floor, is next, swimvare, undervare, Eric Fehr...
That’s always been my thing about the “trade Semin” thing. There’s just not a lot of guys you can find in the league that will drop 40/40/80 every year and contribute what he does defensively. But on the other hand you run the risk of losing him for nothing when the season’s over, and he’s also batshit crazy, which rubs people the wrong way.

Take his 40 goals off of this team and they still had the most goals this year. So how much would the team really lose without him? Whoever takes his place will presumably score more than zero goals.

I mean, its a lot more “deep” than just taking his 40 goals off the board. Defensive assignments and strategies against change, the teammates he played with get affected and so on and so forth.

Why are you ignoring the other important things Semin brings to the table? He’s not Flieschmann. When Semin’s not scoring, he’s still an effective penalty killer and passer. Taking Semin off the team takes away more than just his goal totals. He’s also the team’s main secondary scoring threat, so the first line will have a larger scoring burden if Semin’s gone. I’d be fine with Semin being traded for the right price, but let’s not pretend that we’d only be losing his scoring.

Yeah, I don’t think so either. I think we’d be more likely to get good value at the trade deadline, but at that point, do you really want to trade a guy like Semin who could carry you to the finals if he got hot at the right time?

And let’s not pretend his scoring is carrying anything. Two straight years a lack of 2nd line was our biggest flaw. Well, if having Semin doesn’t guarantee a productive second line then what’s the point? I’d rather take a 2nd line built around a C than a W.

OK. But if much of the hue and cry is to upgrade at 2C, wouldn’t it stand to reason that Semin’s #’s would improvex as a result?
by mechanicsville on Jun 23, 2010 1:56 PM EDT up reply actions
Not necessarily. He creates much more on his own than by finding space and taking a pass, IMO (certainly at even strength). I certainly wouldn’t expect him to take a run at a 50% increase over this year (i.e. 60 goals) as the result of a new pivot – he’d need much more PP TOI to see his numbers jump like that, and that has nothing to do with his 5-on-5 center.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Yeah. The “60 goals” was perhaps a bit of a hyperbole. I would like very much for 28 to remain a Cap for at least another year, while also having the team improve at 2C.

Yeah, that’s true. So true, in fact, that Semin isn’t even one of those guys. As of now 40 is his career year. I’m not penciling him in for an annual 40.

Right. In his five seasons, this is the first time he put up 40 goals, first time he put up 80 points, and second time he put up 40 assists. A career year in a season full of career years. Put another way, a career year on one of the most prolific offensive squads of all time.

But in 2006 he put up 38/35/73, and in 2008 he put up 34/45/79 (in 62 games) in addition to the 40/44/84 he put up this year. Its not like he’s putting up 22/30/52 every year and i’m saying he’s putting up 40/40/80.

No, but you’re selling a 35/35/70 guy with injury and consistency problems as a 40/40/80 guy that can be counted on to be a 40/40/80 guy.
I waited all year for this?
I probably should have clarified it by saying he’s “around” 40/40/80. And there’s still not a lot of guys around the league that can do what he does, which makes it really difficult to trade him for worthwhile value, if it wasn’t already impossible due to his contract/reputation.

That’s why we all want someone who’ll put up a lot of points with good two-way play—Sharp, Bergeron, Marleau, and so on. None of them has the single game upside of Semin, but none of them is as inconsistent.

I liked Nelson all along, but probably would’ve taken Tinordi if he was there, given everything I’ve read and heard about him.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Have you seen anything about his skating? That’s my biggest worry. The big physical D are pretty regularly overrated come draft time, IMO, and I’m worried that Tinordi has made his reputation by just being better and physically more mature than other players. He’s also committed to Notre Dame and I’m not particularly impressed with their ability to develop hockey players.

His online scouting report says:
“He skates very well for a big guy. He has an excellent shot from the point. He’s a pretty smart player. The head’s there, the hands are there, the shot’s there, the skating ability is there. He’s got a real, real cannon for a shot.”
But I haven’t seen it for myself or anything, and that “for a big guy” qualifier is like saying a woman’s hot “for her age” – it’s still nice and all, but qualified.
As for ND, I have heard that he’d go to London to play for Dale Hunter if that’s what the team that drafts him wants.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Here’s an interview with him from June 1. His dad REALLY wants him to get his college degree, apparently:
http://www.thepipelineshow.com/clips/season_5/Jarred_Tinordi_June1.mp3
Huh. Here an in-the-know scout says:
I think Tinordi stands a good chance to come to London. The Knights like the Mounties always seem to get their man. His addition would certainly help by adding a layer of toughness that they desperately need. Johns seems determined to go the College route but much will be decided by the NHL team that drafts these two players and where they wish for them to play for the betterment of their development.
Even if he goes to ND, is he really going to spend four years there? How often do first-round NHL pick to go to four years of college? (Note: not a question to which I know the answer, though I obviously have my suspicions.)
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Like you said, it’s empirical, but I think it’s all over the map. Kessel and Toews took a brief stop, Oshie was a little longer, Skille and Finley were the full 4; Geoffrion was the full 4. I think it depends on how good the player actually is, and how serious they are about getting a degree.
I waited all year for this?
The qualification is what worries me as well. With John Carlson they said he had NHL skating already. Not “skates well for a 6’3” kid." Tinordi may very well have it, but I’m worried. GMGM can’t really be busting first round picks anymore.
And going to London would be a far superior choice for him, but I wonder how Hockey USA would feel about that. I can’t imagine any NHL teams preferring him to go to ND than London, though maybe one or two teams would prefer to delay his signing.
I waited all year for this?
I’ve only seen him in one game in the Minsk tournament and I’m not saying that he’s the new Paul Coffey or anything but his skating was good.
He was one of the best players on the ice in that game along with Grimaldi. The fact that the biggest player on the ice; Tinordi and the smallest; Grimaldi stood out made me remember the game.

Where did he grow up? I see that he was born in Minnesota. Casserole is a very Minnesota dish. I grew up there and it was very common to have potluck events and bring a casserole. Could contain anything, but usually would have some ground beef.
I live in Maryland now and I haven’t met anyone using the term casserole in the DC area. Maybe his mom learned the art of casserole making while in Minnesota (grab a bunch of canned goods from the pantry, dump them into casserole dish, mix, bake at 350 for awhile, sprinkle potato chips on top if it’s a special day). Could be a Canadian thing, too, possibly.
Or used a lot of cookbooks dating from the 50s and 60s…

Pretty much. I think if I’m a still-developing goalie having any negotiations with a team this year, I sign a one-year deal for whatever money they’re offering and prepare to spend another year on a bus in the A. There’s a lot of real good goalies looking for jobs right now.

I have no problem with including the 26th pick. But that raises the stakes on the “prospec,t,” since the pick comes so late in the round. Do the Caps send off a Marcus Johansson and the pick for a guy who is an RFA after this year and would be due a hefty raise if he performs the way you hope he would if you’re trading for him? I can’t say that I would, if I have designs of filling that 2C spot from within. Do you move Perreault?
This is why I did not pursue a career in sports management.

I would in no way talk about Mackan and the 26. That’s two first round picks. Buff isn’t even on a particularly awesome contract, hasn’t been consistent, and will need a new deal soon. If they get the 26 they are talking about Bouchard, at most. I’m not even sure I’d love that trade from a Caps stand point.

I’d do almost anything to get them to move Flash, so on that basis alone I’d accept it. I’m just not totally sold on Buff. He’s been inconsistent (though he might be a guy that knows how to flip the playoff switch) and he’s already being paid 3 mill and working toward a nice raise.
If we are moving 26 and Flash or MP I’d rather look over at Weiss.
I waited all year for this?
He’s a fine player, but I certainly hope Flash + #26 pick could land some other pretty decent players (as you point out with Weiss).
LeBrun was right on the money with the asking price. I’m not looking forward to the Caps having to deal with Buff’s physical play in the division, but Atlanta gave up a pretty decent haul to get him and bailed Chicago out in terms of the salary cap. I’m glad GMGM didn’t bite here.

Duct tape
Commonly duct tape carries no safety certifications…which means the tape can violently burn, produce toxic smoke, ingestion and contact toxicity, irregular mechanical strength, and low life expectancy for the adhesive on the tape. Its use in ducts has been prohibited by the state of California7 and by building codes in most other places in the U.S.

In a 2001 NASA manual for spaceflight operations aboard the International Space Station, duct tape is even called for in case of “acute psychosis” during a space mission; NASA procedures call for the use of duct tape to restrain the affected astronaut.

Could have been tied together a little more clearly. D’ohboy has a great duct tape analogy for Flash. Hopefully he’ll pop in and share.

Flashtape
Flash is like duct tape. Cheap, crappy, off-brand duct tape bought at a discount for a dollar a roll.
You use Flashtape to mend some broken parts and things go well for a while. He’s adhering things together nicely and he’s versatile. You begin to congratulate yourself on your savvy purchase of discount tape, instead of spending five dollars on a roll of the brand name.
Then, when the pressure’s on and you really need Flashtape to hold it together, he fails spectacularly – just like you always knew he would when you went all cheap and tried to save a few bucks on duct tape.
So yes, Flash is like duct tape.

I actually had a men’s league game that night and saw the end at the bar after. It was a blowout so I never bothered watching the full game but I did see Wilson’s highlights. He definitely can skate but he’s not very big or strong (as of now) and I’m not sure he has that explosive skating that tends to separate NHL players. Can he make it in the NHL as a bottom 6 forward? I don’t know his game is suited to a checking role. Is he good enough to be a top 6 NHL player? Time will tell, but he’s definitely a long shot right now.

Wow. That is a great haul for CHI. I’m shocked they were able to get so much, but then again they were dealing with ATL. Jeremy Morin was either a First or an early Second last year so he’s a pretty high level prospect.
I waited all year for this?
But after reading up on HF...
I think ATL may have done a good job cutting bait. I don’t like the sound of this:
A goal scorer at heart, Morin attempts creative maneuvers with the puck. He’s just a bit slow putting things together and may not be as successful at higher levels. Skating is not his strong suit. Running into teammates on the ice makes one question where his head is at times.
Poor skating and poor hockey sense do not make for an easy road to the NHL these days. He did play for Team USA in the WJC but I don’t remember him having a particularly big impact or being very important for USA.
I waited all year for this?
Yeah at first glance I’m going with the Hawks for the win, but really depends on how they use those picks.

I think it’s pretty fair. Sopel is a serviceable veteran D and ATL definitely needs some of that stability. Morin is still a highly rated prospect, and is probably more talented than Aliu, but I can’t say that either team got the better prospect in the swap. The pick ATL gave up is the pick they got for Kovalchuk, so it doesn’t really sting. At the end of the day ATL made their NHL team much better without depleting much of their farm (if at all). They had the 7th ranked farm (per HF) so they can afford to give away a guy like Morin anyway.
Chicago cleared up a ton of cap space (about 6 mill), got a guy that could potentially be an NHL 2C down the line, and picked up a first round pick. They have to love that.
I waited all year for this?
And TSN says that it’s the 24th pick in the draft going to CHI, not ATL’s own pick, which would be much higher. TSN also has Akim Aliu going to ATL. He seems to have stagnated lately, not being able to make that next step, but his potential has been tantalizing for a few years now.
With Kane, Buff, and Aliu all in ATL, this reminds me of the Omar Minaya “Latin Strategy” he went through with the Mets a couple years ago.

Did a double take there, had to check the trade again because I forgot that Evander Kane planes for ATL.

Still awaiting confirmation of trade call complete on Chi-Atl deal. Can’t explain now, but some weird vibes on this one. May be nothing.

would those be the same vibes McKenzie got when he broke the Nylander-to-KHL story?

earlier tweet says the trade was broken by he who shall not be named. You decide.
"It's always good to have vikings."
Yeah, that makes it incredibly suspect. I wonder why the reputable guys jumped on it so quick.
I waited all year for this?
because they’re all desperate to be the ones to break a big story?

I’m no journalist but I’d be desperate to be the guy that is trusted implicitly.

There were a lot of people who reported it; I first heard about the trade from Kevin Allen. LeBrun followed up pretty quickly. Those guys are pretty reliable and don’t seem to make up random stuff.
