Looks like it’s deathly quiet here today, but I think Japers’ Nation might be sad about this:
Nashville trades Hamhuis rights to Philadelphia
"It's always good to have vikings."
I wasn’t able to open the site or any of the SB nation websites until now. I tried all morning long. I think there was a problem before.
Lobbies: Green, Carlson, Orlov
On Hamhuis, I agree that many of Japers nation will be sad. He was the free agent most fans here were hoping for the Caps to acquire.
So which defenseman can the Caps acquire now, without having to cough up too much money.

No idea how to pronounce it, but I’m hoping we can manage to get him with the Phoenix cap situation.

Phoenix cap situation? I think you mean their financial situation. Yotes only issue is how much money they are allowed to spend. They’ve still got over 21 million to spend before they’d be up against the cap.

Isn’t it obvious? Even if we couldn’t re-sign him, he was worth a helluva lot more than a 7th defenseman and a 7th round pick. I don’t fucking get it. We don’t have a 2nd rounder, why not fleece Vancouver out of theirs? Why not trade for Eric Fehr? Why WHY WHY?!?!?!

I don’t know that the Caps would have given up Fehr for those rights, but I could see maybe getting a 2 from VAN. What I don’t understand is why you need a sub-standard D. You’ve got plenty great ones and more on the way. What does GMDP see in Ryan Parent that he just can’t quit him?
I waited all year for this?
I trust GMDP’s talent evaluating skills, and Trotz gets the most out of his players, so Parent could still rebound: but he’s the most superfluous player on the roster, right now. And the worst.

If the choice is getting nothing, and getting pennies, I guess you take the pennies. PHI must figure they can sign him, but I thought they had their own cap issues.
"It's always good to have vikings."
They have about 8 million in cap space (10 if the cap rises) to sign 5-6 guys. They have the money to give to Hamhuis if they are willing to a) not significantly upgrade the goalie situation and b) fill out the roster with lots of league minimum type players. Coburn is RFA and depending on how the Hamhuis negotiations go they might mean the end of Coburn in PHI. Hammer is an upgrade, but it still leaves them with only 2 reliable pairs if Coburn leaves.
I waited all year for this?
I don’t know, but if I’m Hamhuis, unless they knock my socks off, there’s no reason to sign before July 1.
"It's always good to have vikings."
That’s what I said about Timonen and Hartnell. When PHI makes these moves they are generally pretty aggressive about getting the player signed.
I waited all year for this?
Per TSN story
“I think Philly has an unbelievable defensive core,” Hamhuis said in a statement. "To join a core like that makes the Flyers one of the tougher ones in the league.
“To play against the teams from the East, the conference has a lot of great forwards, and watching the playoffs, having a great defence will get you a long way.”
"It's always good to have vikings."
I would have rather had a pick. Even a 3rd rounder.

I could live with that too. Keep gutting PHI’s next couple drafts. They’ll be a beast for a couple years but they are creating a huge hole in their farm that is going to be tough to compensate for, I hope.
I waited all year for this?
That's what I'm afraid of
But really I think trades like the Leino deal, where we create a prospect out of nowhere, are helping us keep afloat. Up front we’re still fairly young and have three young entry-level prospects in Giroux, JVR and Leino. We also have two possible second pairing defenders in Kevin Marshall and Marc-Andre Bourdon in the AHL, but they will take a couple more seasons at least before they can take up that role. But there has been some evidence that Holmgren is very high on Marshall especially and doesn’t want to trade him.
Still, we do need to have a good draft next year to keep that farm stocked.
by PursuitOfLappyness on Jun 19, 2010 11:03 PM EDT up reply actions
I think someone at PHI has blackmail photos of GMDP because I can’t understand why else GMDP would keep giving PHI such sweetheart deals. I can’t say they got totally robbed because they never were going to get much for Hammer’s rights, but Parent blows and NSH absolutely doesn’t need help on D. GMDP has some sort of crazy love affair with Parent for some reason and totally just gave PHI a huge advantage because of it. Gotta say, this Philly-friendly bullshit is making it awful hard to root for NSH anymore.

I am going to laugh all I want. You can’t win in the NHL anymore if you can’t score goals. Sure, you need to play D, too. And you guys can do that. But teams that are D-only don’t go very far without some sort of ridiculous luck on their side. NSH has had scoring problems for years, and the PP was possibly the biggest reason they couldn’t upset CHI this year, and GMDP refuses to address it. I could live with that if his stupid obsession didn’t help out PHI so damn much. You can say you want to contend for the CD, but right now, on paper, I’ve got you guys 4th. Hey, at least you should out-score CBJ.
I waited all year for this?
I don’t have any idea what Poile is planning on for scoring. We haven’t re-signed Hornqvist, and we rely on old farts Dumont, Sullivan, and Arnott for a top line. Its pathetic. We finished in the top half of ES scoring, so its not ‘quite’ as bad as all that, but the power play is just embarrassing. Fehr, or someone like that, would’ve helped immensely.
Whatever. We were supposed to finished last in the division this year, too. I don’t give a shit anymore about division placing. I want to win a playoff series. And the bottom line is this trade does not help us move towards that goal.

by Chris Burton on Jun 19, 2010 2:52 PM EDT up reply actions
Well I never had you last in the division, even after Mason’s hot year CBJ never scared me. I think you and STL are right about the same level with you guys having an advantage on D and them having an advantage on O. I think their young forwards are going to continue to progress, their D is young and getting better, and they closed the goaltending gap considerably with the Halak trade. They could come out and stink for the first half of the season again and I wouldn’t be shocked, but I don’t expect it. And no, Ryan Parent doesn’t do shit to help you win a playoff series no matter where you finish in the regular season. Anyone that watched this year realizes that.
I waited all year for this?
Yeah, I don’t understand this at all. There are a lot of teams that need a top 4 D, Pitts, VAN, the list goes on and all Nashville could get for this guy was a lousy D and a 7th round pick? Couldn’t the Caps afford to give Nashville the pick and a prospect or shit just give them Flash. Do GMGM and GMDP don’t get along or something? Or maybe GMGM is hoping to get someone more experienced like Mitchell as Cullen suggested on the Radio show today. Who knows.

I didn’t catch any of it. How’d it go? Did Alzner have anything particularly interesting to say (or to answer)?

Nothing stood out from Karl’s part. He answered questions how you would expect. He sounded older than he is from a poise standpoint. He was very complimentary of others.
By the way, I rarely listen live given the time and day. I subscribe to it on Itunes and listen when I get up or have time like I did today.
"You ever use smelling salts, every time you type a bad blog?" Brooks Laich
I think that is a bit unfair and I’m not saying that as defending the interview as much as having heard it several times I picked up on several subtle things in the things he did say.
If you listen in every answer he does not associate himself as a member of the the Washington Capitals. It is always “the Caps” and “they”. This is a guy who as fans we view as a shoe in and view as a Cap and he does not seem to view it the same way and that doesn’t seem to be just lip service. He said as much when talking about his recall from Game 7 and his shuffling back and forth between Hershey and Washington.
I also got that he was highest on Holtby from the goaltenders. He had good things to say about all of them, which I would fully expect from a teammate, but with Holtby he went beyond that and said he actually enjoyed watching him play. This was another example of his disassociation of being a member with the parent club, he kept saying the Capitals look to be in good shape in goal for the future and the like. Never “we”.
by freakinandpeakin on Jun 19, 2010 3:29 PM EDT up reply actions
I think we just disagree on “standing out”. I wasn’t knocking any of the participants. It’s just that Karl said nothing that was surprising to me. That isn’t a knock on Karl or the interviewers (Pepper and you). If anything my comment should be taken as a compliment to Karl. You could tell from the interview why he was a captain in the past. Poised, mature, confident, yet humble.
As for the Holtby part, I didn’t find that to be a surprise either. If I’m not mistaken he played more with Holtby during the season than any other goalie. However, I can see how you may feel that portion was particularly insightful. Based on the fact I’ve thought all along Holtby might turn out to be the best of the 3 young guys I probably didn’t see it as anything “new” I guess.
One other note – I thought the interview questions were first rate. No endless stream of “what’s your favorite” type of crap that seems to be the questions de jour in blogs & MSM interviews these days.
"You ever use smelling salts, every time you type a bad blog?" Brooks Laich
I’m kind of surprised he tabbed Holtby. Sure, he saw him a lot this year but he was playing in front of Neuvirth for both Calder Cups and he’s seen enough of Varlamov to know what he’s about. It’s a great sign for Holtby, but especially after Holtby’s playoff performance I can’t say I’m not surprised.
I waited all year for this?
I didn’t take it as a knock. I in fact didn’t want to come across as defending the interview since I was involved in it. I think interviewing athletes is tough, because I think it is always hard to get anything out of them and they will rarely say anything all that earth shattering or interesting. I much prefer talking to the people who cover the sport or are opinion makers, because they will give opinions.
If I have one “disappointment” about the interview is that he didn’t tell us the joke he told the Caps during his interview.

OK, according to capgeek.com, Philly has 16 roster players taking up $48.6 million of cap room. That does not include Hamhuis or a goaltender (Leighton or someone else). That could be another $6 million right there, leaving about $4 million (assuming a $2 million bump) for five more players. Tight, but unless they move someone, they are going to cheap up on their goaltending again.
If you've read this far...seek help.
They probably will cheap up on the goaltending, but they can still make it work if the cap goes up. Even giving Hamhuis 3.5 and Coburn 2.5 they still have plenty of money to sign a decently priced goalie. They would have to fill out the forwards with near minimum players, but they could probably also afford a guy like Dan Ellis at about 3 million. That would be a scary team.
I waited all year for this?
Holmgren was quoted as saying the goaltending would cost “considerably more” next season. But I’m not sure whether he anticipated he would be able to steal Hamhuis for so cheap (assuming he signs him now). He might just run with the Detroit theory that an elite defense will remove the need for elite goaltending. After all, Michael Leighton got three shutouts in a single playoff series without really being tested against Montreal. I would still rather having a goaltender who can steal games against offences like the Caps though…

I’ve never been completely sold on the “Detroit” theory. While Osgood may not be a top 5 goalie, he has won multiple Stanley Cups. That has to mean something.

Chicago proved it too. Only thing is Detroit doesn’t have such big financial issues after winning it.

No, I wasn’t clear now that I look back. I think that Osgood gets over looked at what he brings. Detroit was able to establish there reign with the help of cheaper goalies, but Osgood is better than many give him credit for.

That depends who you talk to. There are some people that want to put him in the HoF. Don’t forget he was the backup for Mike Vernon for one of the Cups and started as the backup to Hasek for another Cup. He’s not the worst goalie ever but he’s not going to go down as a particularly exceptional goalie. The entire Detroit Theory is that if you stack your skaters you can survive with an average goalie. I’m pretty sure Osgood supports that proposition.
I waited all year for this?
He does have the results to show for it, and IIRC was strong outside of Detroit (in STL and…NYI?). He’ll be an interesting HHoF case.

Boucher/Leighton giving you goaltending like that in the playoffs was a great fluke, but there’s a reason both are career backups. You don’t need an elite goalie but you need someone that you can trust to make the first save. I don’t think they reliably have that with Bouch/Leighton, and I doubt GMPH does either. Dan Ellis would be a pretty decent target, and GMPH sure knows how to play that fiddle.
I waited all year for this?
I should read down before posting…That is basically my point. Osgood brings/brought more to the table than people want to give him credit for.
by freakinandpeakin on Jun 20, 2010 9:32 AM EDT up reply actions
Osmediocre usually gets credit for being an adequate goalie that could make the first stop and refrain from letting in cripplingly bad goals that sank the team. Which is what he did. He was never an elite goalie that Detroit really looked to to steal games for their success. They always relied on their all star skaters and solid D corps to limit how much work Osmediocre had to do. Much like Chicago did with Niemi this year.

Correct
And I would be pretty unhappy if we went into the next season with the Boosh/Leighton combination again. We definitely need someone decent, but with the stacked defense we’ve got if we sign both Hamhuis and Coburn (and maybe we could sign a person favorite of yours: Randy Jones), I doubt GMPH is going to go for an elite goaltender.
I actually am confident we’ve got that “decent” guy in our system somewhere, but whoever he is he needs more time. Backlund could be decent. We signed Sergei Bobrovsky from Russia who has some good reviews. And our farm is pretty stacked with other goaltenders, including Nicola Riopel who a couple of seasons ago was the MVP in the Q. It’s just that we can’t rely on any one of them at this stage.

Malkin to the Kings sez
Sources say the Caps have offered winger Alexander Semin all around the league. He has one year at $6 million left on his contract, and is a looming unrestricted free agent after next season.
Nobody is sure what Semin might fetch, although there’s a belief the Caps will want two high-end prospects and a pick. Semin had 40 goals and 84 points in 73 games last season.
“It wouldn’t surprise me if they moved Semin,” a league executive said Friday. “They need to make that lineup a little harder to play against and that guy is up and down.”
http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Hockey/NHL/Trades/2010/06/19/14447936.html
Let’s assume that they might want to trade Semin. Why would it be for prospects? We’ve got plenty of them, don’t we?
"It's always good to have vikings."
I could see us trading him for sure. Whether it’s prospects or roster players is sort of irrelevant. I don’t think we’d get fair value for a roster player so I think prospects make more sense, especially if we can get a prospect that has already had a couple years of development (like MON got with Eller). They may not be the same impact player as Semin, but if they can step into the lineup and produce on the cheap then it could be worth it with the other cap space opened. I think two high-end prospects and a pick is too optimistic, but you have to start high. I could see a pick and a prospect, but I’d probably prefer 2 prospects that are partially developed.
I waited all year for this?
I guess it would depend on what kind of prospect. I just look at the Bears’ roster and think how we don’t have the slots for everyone we think might be worthy, so that’s why I ask what good is more prospects. OTOH, I guess if it opened the cap space for that 2C everyone wants, it could make sense.
"It's always good to have vikings."
Moving Semin would open up the cap space to get both a legitimate 2C and a serious upgrade in the top 4D. There is still a future cap crunch to worry about with long term contracts as Carlznerson and Green are both up for new deals in the next couple years, but we’d be able to make serious improvements in other areas this year. We’d have to weight that against the loss in secondary scoring, but that’s a personal preference that’s been beaten to death.
I waited all year for this?
I just worry that 1 or 2 year contracts (so GMGM can re-sign Green and Carlznerson and Varlavirthby) will scare away potential 2Cs and top4 Ds.

Perhaps because we’re expecting so many of our prospects to move up to Washington next year? At least three, maybe as many as five, based on what GMGM said. Also, the last link in today’s Clips indicates that Hershey may be thinning out this summer for reasons other than the Alzner/Carlson/Neuvirth promotions.

And as long as we’re talking prospects, here’s some Stingrays info: http://www.stingrayshockey.com/team/teamnews/index.html?article_id=1482
I should have known before I clicked the link who it was written by. Luckily I caught the byline right away.

For the longest time I thought Malkin to the Kings was the name of a blog, and then I was always surprised when I ended up reading something at the Ottawa Sun. Eventually I figured out that the phrase actually referred to Garrioch.
"Ovechkin, what is good in life?"
"To crush your enemies. To see them driven before you. And to hear the lamentations of their captain."
Yeah, my hockey brain has taken awhile to flip on today. I missed the subject line somehow. I avoid him like the plague. At least Eklund is just a blogger. The Sun actually pays that guy money.

Even worse is that he still lists the Caps as having interest in Thomas.

If the Bruins dump Thomas and that horrible contract it will be the best trade of the year even if they get nothing in return.
"You ever use smelling salts, every time you type a bad blog?" Brooks Laich
I don’t see it happening with the way the goaltending landscape has changed in the last two years. Too much money on a 35+ when there are definitely cheaper alternatives that can give you adequate play. I agree that it would be an amazing trade if they were able to do it for a 7th round pick. If they can get away with moving that contract without throwing in a dowry I will be most impressed. Then again, NYR moved the Gomez contract and took one of MON’s best prospects, so you never know.
I waited all year for this?
What a difference a year makes. Last year, Thomas was a Vezina Trophy winner. This year, he’s perceived as the goalie equivalent of a Nylander in that getting rid of him is perceived as addition by subtraction, due to the existence of a hard salary cap.
Will Thomas be lent to the Grand Rapids Griffens and then lent to a Finnish league?
(Okay, I’m kidding on this last comment.)
Rocking the Red since 1975
And that’s the problem with goalies. A year ago Steve Mason was the Calder winner and on top of the world. This year? People are wondering if he’s going to bounce back or go the Andrew Raycroft route. He’s got so much talent it’s hard to imagine him just falling apart, but goaltending isn’t just about talent.
I waited all year for this?
Well, Thomas at least can still play at a pretty decent level. Just Rask is better.

Hee. Just found a Latvian (!) site that has Keith Aucoin going to Dynamo Minsk. Snicker.
http://sportacentrs.com/hokejs/khl/19062010-iespejams_dinamo_papildinas_vel_viens_ame
I saw two articles about Aucoin and Giroux in Swedish media two weeks ago. One of them had them going to Södertälje in the SEL and in the other one they were heading to KHL FWIW.
What can I say I’m a JP fangirl. I will follow him into the darkest and filthiest of alleys, even the comment section at Puck Daddy.
This guy had decent reporting on Marcus Johansson when he was in Canada with Team Sweden prior to the WJCs, so I weight his “I’m hearings” with a bit of credibility: http://twitter.com/farhandevji/statuses/16574803145

The initial report isn’t exactly reputable, so I’m not sure it needed a response. But this doesn’t exactly persuade me that he isn’t being shopped. I don’t think you’ll hear anything from GMGM’s camp and, as you said, if it happens it’ll be sudden and out of nowhere.
