Loved the interview, but I have to nitpick the following statement.

since for the third year in a row his game in the playoffs paled in comparison to the regular seaso

07-08 Regular Season: 1.36 poitns per game Post season: 1.285 Points per game
08-09 Regular Season: 1.39 points per game Post Season 1.5 Points per game
09-10 Regular Season: 1.51 points per game Post Season 1.43 Points Per Game

I hardly think the post season “PALES” in comparrison, especially since in 08-09 his post season performance was higher than regular season

Yep, I think it would be great to really make this whole town into a similar sort of color scheme (much like Pitt as much as I hate them) to really bring all the teams together. All of the ones actually located in the district seem to have a young core that could make them contenders for a long time (the wizards at least will soon) and it would be great to see a fanbase get behind all three.

I just don’t understand how they could have a red colour scheme and still the “Wizards”. Is red really a color that’s associated with any type of wizardry?

I think Ted is very cognizant of the fact that the name change to the Wizards was important to Abe Pollin and his family and doesn’t want to do anything that’s going to appear disrespectful to his memory.

I’m still trying to wrap my head around how Belanger can get high-sticked in center ice, in front of the ref, lose eight teeth and a bunch of blood and no penalty is called.

by b.orr4 on Jun 11, 2010 9:08 AM EDT reply actions

Agree that it was a bad non-call. Seems like the ref never saw the stick pop back up after the completion of the follow through. But Belanger has sure gotten fame for toughness—everyone shivers at the idea of personal dentistry work on the bench before the next shift.

One guy sent me three different emails about the quality of the ketchup and how it bothers him that the ketchup dispenser is not filled all the time. I promise, whoever runs the ketchup, I will be looking to make sure that it’s filled.

Good grief on the sheer number and wacky content of Ted’s emails. He going to need an assistant in order to keep up with important requests such as the ketchup dispenser.

He used to post some of those emails in his blog (without putting in the names, of course). And I offered to answer them in the comments. The ketchup thing became a bit viral in his blog mostly because someone wrote to Ted to complain that the ketchup used to come in packets and was now in squirt bottles.

From there it took off, and people talked about the ketchup quality (they VC uses Heinz, so there’s no question of quality there…), the texture, the color, the shape of the bottles, etc. All in fun, of course. But not everyone can tell the difference between fun and controversy…

The youngest of the K. Miller brothers turns 41? Wow, time has flied. I remember when the Caps go Kelly Miller back in 1987-88 and thinking how they were set for a checking winger for the next decade…and they were.

As for Tik’, give the guy a break. Yeah, he missed an empty net, and yes, if he scores, the series is tied 1-1 heading back to DC. All that would have meant, more than likely is that it would say: 1998 Stanley Cup Final: DETROIT 4, Washington 1 as opposed to 4-0. That Detroit team was as great as they’ve come in the past 20 years, and they’re better than any team that’s won the Cup since they won it.

Biggest part of Ted's press conference:

The kudos that he gave to the Nationals plus the total and complete silence on the Redskins. That kind of tells me two things:
1) Nice Ted wants to create an oppositional identity to the Redskins with his brand. We are DC based, transparent, responsive, built on homegrown youth, and view our teams as a community trust.
2) Badass Ted wants out of his Comcast (The Official Network of the Washington Redskins) to create some kind of gorilla that can go to war against the Skins.

I’m a ‘Skins fan but it is hard to embrace that team while Snyder is the owner and he insists on treading fans like dollar signs and not people. The gameday experience sucks out there, and I hate all of the wall to wall coverage of ’Skins when they are not actually playing. I’d prefer to have better analysis and fan outlets on TV and radio (for Snyder owns radio and ‘Skins ex-jocks rule radio as well) for when I’m not on the internet in my smartphone less world.

I’m a big Ted fan, and I want the Nationals to embrace more of Ted’s values, especially with transparency and responsiveness. I’d like to see him use his muscle to humble Snyder some too.

I think the NBA sucks, but I will try to give the new Wizards a chance and hope that Ted can help improve the NBA as well.

I think that the Nationals are well on their way to embracing Ted’s values. Mark Lerner, the son of Nat’s owner Ted Lerner, and the member of the family that is the most involved in the day to day operations of the Nat’s was a member of Lincoln Holdings and is now a shareholder in Monument Sports and Entertainment, and has said that he talks to Ted fairly often. And yes, I would love for Ted to send CSN back to Philly where they belong and start his own network based on the Caps and Wizards. Watching the Nationals on a network owned by Angelos is bad enough, but at least MASN2 is in HD. CSN is not only responsible for the abomination that is CSN+, they are owned by Comcast, one of the worst corporations in the world, and who is to top it all off the owner of the Flyers.

Nationals pitcher Stephen Strasburg’s dazzling debut last night looked a little less dazzling to many Washington-area viewers.

Where the 21-year-old rookie’s 14-strikeout performance represented the future, Verizon Fios and Dish Network’s standard-definition broadcasts represented the past—the same old channel-bundle system that forces viewers to pay for channels they don’t like while sometimes failing to provide the content they want. In this case, the desired content was a high-definition feed of the Nats’ 5-2 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates, not the lower-resolution version served up by those two companies.

The immediate blame for that falls on the Mid-Atlantic Sports Network - the regional firm owned in part by the Nationals but mostly by the Baltimore Orioles-that chose to reserve its primary channel for a Yankees-Orioles game that nobody will remember two months from now. (O’s fans probably want to forget that 12-7 beatdown already.)

But Verizon paid to carry both MASN channels and then failed to clear space on its Fios TV system for the high-definition version of MASN2—yet still manages to carry HD versions of the QVC and HSN home-shopping channels. Dish, meanwhile, also signed up for MASN but has yet to transmit a single game in HD—perhaps because the necessary bandwidth had already been assigned to such fare as the Weather Channel HD and HLN (the former Headline News) HD.

(Comcast, Cox, DirecTV and RSN all provide both MASN channels in high-def. And all of these TV services, plus Verizon and Dish, offer the high-def version of the other big regional sports network, Comcast SportsNet.)

When I lived in DC and the Nationals were still brand new I remember games would be on channel 8 – which on RCN, at the time, was not actually a channel. It was a black screen except when the Nats were on. Hilarious.

You couldn’t design a training regime for Tomas Fleischmann that would allow him to keep the muscle he put on during the offseason? That guy totally gets a “2”. But I guess I should save it for his wrap, which should be around June 28 or so, right?

I believe in the Turkish pix they’re enjoying the waters not far from Antalya, aka “the Turkish Riviera”. Europeans go to the Riviera, Eastern Bloc girls go here.

Pre-Game notes

’Sabout time. The Stars are going with a new goalie tonight – their #1 goalie Brent Krahn has now sufficiently recovered from his concussion to go back in net, and the Bears had started to solve Climie. The Stars continue without their stud defenseman Hutchinson, who is out with a knee thing after a collision with (I think) Pinner in Game Three.

Hockey News has a more-or-less unremarkable discussion of the series so far (and every team that’s playing for a championship should fly charter, this mucking around with buses and commercial flight is just silly and let’s see if the Stars charter for the trip back to PA), but the lone comment to the piece is magnificent:

Yeah, you’re damn right I have a comment. After the Stanley Cup finals are over, there’s only a few million rabid, pure hockey fans who’d love to extend their hockey-watching season a few days by watching the rest of the AHL finals. This league seems to pride itself on being well-run, with stable franchises in well-chosen markets. So why is it that when I go the league’s website that the streaming they offer is of such unbelievably poor quality as to make the games literally unwatchable? That might be acceptable if the content was available for free, but they want THIRTEEN BUCKS a game for this guano. Memo to the AHL: It is June, 2010. To make a business decision not to be “standards-compliant” when it comes to internet streaming that you are CHARGING FOR makes you look like 59 year-olds who wanna try this whole “computer thing” while being too cheap to pay an IT guy a few hundred bucks to offer a product that YOUR TARGET MARKET (hockey fans, hello?) would be willing to pay for. Seriously, screw you AHL, from the bottom of my wallet. I got $13 on my desk right here. Want it?

Finally, we haven’t seen Braden lately, but his playoff beard is in game shape and ready to step in if Neuvy falters:

It would be a lot easier for me to e-mail real time game pix to someone here to post in the game thread, vs me using my phone to upload to a file server and then link in the game thread using my phone. Most of us have our e-mail addresses as public info, anybody volunteer to be available to receive and link?

Otherwise I’ll probably do most pix after the game – which I have to do for the regular camera anyway.

Familiar face makes “Worst in Hockey Broadcasting List”

Worst Play by Play: I’m giving Jack Edwards of NESN a break this year and giving this to Joe Beninati of Comcast SportsNet Mid-Atlantic. I’m not doing this based on my opinion, this is based on the number of complaints from fans whenever he appears on Versus. Bruins fans don’t like him. Flyers fans don’t like him. Rangers fans don’t like him. The fans who like him are Capitals and Alex Ovechkin fans. I personally don’t have a problem with him, but I’ve received comments like, “I hate when Joe Buttafuoco is on Versus.” “I can’t stand him especially when he praises Ovechkin (he calls Ovechkin’s games, he’s going to praise him).” “Beninati is a screamer.” They really don’t hold up for me, I think Joe is fine, but based on the high number of fan complaints, I put him here this year.

I honestly can’t take a guy seriously who makes Emerick and Olcyzk his best announcer and analyst, and fucking MILBURY his best studio analyst.

Anytime you use a guy from a regional broadcast in a national (or “national”, whatever) broadcast there will be detractors, and that’s all they use on Versus. And anytime those regional guys are calling games featuring their home team, they’re going to have extra praise for them.

Plus Joe B. can’t help it if Ovie is more worthy of praise than a lot of the other teams being called by their homer commentators.

But yeah, I’m shocked that Flyers and Rangers fans don’t like him – guess what, we don’t like their guys, either! Meanwhile I dismiss any Bruins fan’s opinions in this matter because they all subscribe to the Cult of Jack Edwards and that renders any viewpoint by them mute just on principle. The guy’s a loon, one of the worst in the business.

by Becca H on Jun 11, 2010 1:47 PM EDT up reply actions

I got no problem with Sam Rosen actually. I just can’t stand Emerick.

To be honest, even though he’s lost some of the zip off his fastball the last few years, I’d still love it if every single game could just be Bob Cole and Harry Neale.

Sam Rosen’s a great announcer.

I can see where Joe B is an acquired taste, but he’s pretty even on a national broadcast. He’ll yell equally loud for whichever team scores a goal.

Exactly. He’s been pretty good at evening out his bias. And if he talks more about Ovie or any of the Caps, it’s usually because…well, who knows them better than Joe B?

by Becca H on Jun 11, 2010 2:07 PM EDT up reply actions

I subscribe to the umpire theory. If everyone is compaining about you that probably means you’re fair to all sides. And really, Boston fans complaining when their guy is Jack Edwards?

A little random memory

I was watching an online feed of Caps-Pens, and they didn’t do commericals (might have been in Russian). So during one break they were just there, the audio still on for Joe B and Edzo. Joe B wanted to ask Edzo about the Caps’ goaltending, but Edzo nixed it, sounding annoyed, and told Joe B to ask him about the Pens’ PP.
