Oh God I hope Kariya doesn’t go to PIT. He would be a great fit if he’s willing to take a big pay cut. He’s not the same guy he was so he won’t get 6 mill again, but he’s still a good skater and has a very good shot. He wouldn’t have to carry the puck as much so he could just find the open space and shoot the puck. Ugh.
Fake scouting reports are genius.
Didn’t realize Markov was that old. No thanks on him. What was the third major injury? ACL, Achilles, and what?
I waited all year for this?
He had that knee injury last season, though that was listed as a sprained MCL, which is 3-8 weeks depending on the severity of it. It’s not a major injury, but i’m really not sure what they were

Weiss
26) Tough from several states away to realize if we’re reading too much into Dale Tallon’s introductory press conference, but it sounds like Stephen Weiss doesn’t fit the new GM’s mould in Florida. Weiss has a no-move. However, would a guy who really wants to be a winner willing to waive?
Dear Steve,
We’d love to have you in DC.

That’s really the question. High-round draft picks are becoming more and more valuable as scouting gets better and teams spend up to the cap. If they want a roster player (I can’t imagine a team like FLA wants roster players), who is it? What combo of picks/prospects do they want? Any guy on an ELC that can contribute at the NHL level is almost certainly going to outplay his contract, which is the name of game in a world with a hard cap.

Very true but at some point you need to take more of a chance during the “window”. We have Semin for one more year and probably the cap space to squeeze a real #2 center with him (and prospects a year or two away that can more meaningfully fill the gaps). For Sharp, I’d give a 2011 first, Flash and a Bouchard type prospect. For Weiss, the first and Bouchard (and trade Flash for a 2nd or other useful asset). It would be tough to trade this year’s #1 as the draft looks really deep in the first round.

I think what you see as more of a chance I see is as just smart management. Giving up those assets for a guy like Sharp or Weiss is smart. Picks are never guarantees and the Caps are going to be drafting late in the 1st for the near future. If I can get relatively young guys with that type of skill I do it in a heartbeat as long as I’m not giving up too valuable an asset/s. Taking a chance, in my mind, tends to be more about signing a vet FA to a multi-year deal when you think he’s the last piece possibly.
