Wednesday Caps Clips: Meet the Neu Boss...
Your savory breakfast links:
- At 22, Michal Neuvirth already has an incredibly impressive AHL resume (26-8/1.99/.927 in one-and-three-quarters playoff runs, as he stands just four wins from a second-consecutive Calder Cup)... and the confidence to match. [Masisak, Patriot-News]
- Mike Knuble, Tomas Fleischmann and Eric Fehr all scored more goals in 2009-10 than one would have expected, given their respective career shooting percentages. The big difference? Fehr's 14.5% in 2009-10 should be more-or-less sustainable. Knuble's 19.2% and Flash's 19.0%? Not so much. [FtR]
- Alex Ovechkin lost three more teeth at Worlds after getting a stick in the mouth. [Alex Ovetjkin, RMNB]
- "Replacement is pretty easy to define for goaltenders: Vesa Toskala or Jose Theodore." Ouch, baby. Very ouch. [BtN]
- Speaking of JT60, here he is "by the tens." [Peerless]
- Opinions on Anton Volchenkov-to-the-Caps are like... well, you know: everyone's got one. [Live In Red, RMNB]
- Some perspective on NHL super-stardom and what it entails. [Caps Today]
- Is Keith Aucoin the answer to the Caps' search for depth down the middle? I don't think so, but someone does. [RtR]
- George McPhee on the NHL Scouting Combine. [NHL]
- There are few Bears who have done more and been discussed less than Patrick McNeill. [Dump n' Chase]
- On Hershey's success. [OFB]
- Finally, happy 34th birthday to Matt Herr (collegiate teammate of Knuble and Brendan Morrison, incidentally) and happy 51st to Pat Riggin (the franchise's all-time leader in adjusted goals against average).

Some people think the signing of Volchenkov means the end of Semin in a Caps sweater, but I think Alzer is the one who loses out. Boudreau has said we would see "The Future Is Now" pairing of Carlson & Alzner next season, however, if Alzner is regulated to the third line, which I believe he would be, I think it makes more sense to either:
1. get him more time in Hershey, or,
2. trade him to upgrade at another position.
I honestly think 3rd pair D is fine for Alzner. He’ll get plenty of PK time, maybe a bit of PP time if BB decides to use two units, and good ES time as well. I don’t know that in that case if any pair is so much better than another that there’s a clear 1-2-3. Green’s pair is #1, but the other two suggested—Carlson-Schultz and Alzner-Poti—look pretty good as well, and I’d personally be cautious about Carlson. Alzner looked really really good after one season too.

I don’t see Alzner sniffing PP time (with the exception of the Caps getting one at the end of a 4-on-4 situation with staggered penalties) unless Boudreau stops using Ovechkin on the PP, which I don’t see happening. The first unit point men will most certainly be Green-Ovechkin, and unit 2, I would guess, is going to be Poti-Carlson. Alzner is going to make his living on PK and ES next year.

Maybe I was combining hope with reality (the hope part being the Caps take a Sharks-ME Vlasic type route with Alzner), but I’m not so sure Poti will fit on the PP. Of course, I hardly see Poti on the PP since he’s not on the top-unit, but I’m still a bit skeptical. Alzner plays PP in Hershey, from what I’ve read.

Alzner did start to play PP in Hershey, but I don’t see him leap frogging Poti. Part of it comes from the fact that I don’t see 4 people playing the point during the PP considering how long Green and AO are out there, and Alzner would have to leapfrog both of them and Carlson to get time. And part of it is I highly doubt Boudreau values Alzner’s offensive game over Poti’s. According to the team, Alzner wasn’t even one of the top 6 defensemen in 09-10. Rightly or wrongly, he will be below Poti on the offensive D man depth chart. That doesn’t mean much to me as far as ability is concerne because, to my eyes, Boudreau is not very good at talent evaluation and playing to strengths. I don’t think he’s a very good coach in general, but that’s been covered ad nauseum.

I would be happier with AO off the point altogether on the PP unit. Whether Bruce agrees is another point.

really doubt the a-train will be pulling into the caps station any time soon unless he willing to play for $4M/yr for 4/5 years, which is exactly the contract he rejected in ottawa. he will no doubt get better offers from someone, somewhere. maybe he will take less money to play here, with his pals and with a chance to win vs other places. it just isnt the caps MO to be paying for big time FA’s (since nylander, anyway).
while we’re at it, shouldnt we be starting to pick the bones of the blackhawks as they head into salary cap hell (hopefully with a stanley cup). they are going to need to shed salary at wholesale prices. they arent going to be able to move campbell and wont move keith. how about brent seabrook or sopel? think we can move a prospect/picks for one of those guys?

No to Sopel, yes to Seabrook. But the first player I want the Caps to try for is Sharp. He fits the Caps biggest need perfectly.

Sharp is listed as a LW but he can play any of the three forward positions. He had a 51.6% on 466 faceoffs. Also he can play in all game situations. He’s the perfect solution for 2C, or at least the best one that’s realistic this summer.

Sharp
He would be such a great addition to this team, but I cannot imagine Chicago letting him go to free up cap space before Versteeg.
If you want to survive out here, you've got to know where your towel is.
they might have to, with that hole they’re in. I imagine they try to keep Sharp, but he’s already signed, and there might be better deals on the table for him than for the other guys.
Plus, iirc they really like Bolland’s performance this post season, so there’s a lot of guys they might want to keep.
Bolland is more than the Caps can afford to pay for a 3rd line center.

and 3rd line center is probably not going to be a problem. Caps have tons of guys that can play that role.

It’s going to be interesting to see in what order the Chicago free agents / salary cap moves will go. And as many have alluded to – we stand in pretty good shape with regards to assets if we feel one of their fallen is what we need. It will make for some fun summer months at least as we sit and watch and hopefully snatch up the pieces we’re looking for.
Recap
They rate B Mo as a top 6 forward and a certain other Caps free agent center as less valuable: Plenty of room for opinions. My opinion is that a top D guy isn’t the pressing concern, but such a person could help the whole D corps grow/improve for a generation.
I laughed at this one for Bill Guerin:
Hard to believe he’d be just as productive with any other centre.
except as someone pointed out recently, he has been just as productive. With the Islanders!

That sucks. He was a childhood friend of a good friend of mine from college. If he’s 34, then I’m [gulp] 34 too. Where do the years go?
So my brother ran into ShaMo and Laich at Front Page in late March. He wished them "good luck" for the upcoming playoffs. When he told me this story I got really pissed and blurted: "You wished THEM luck?!? They need to wish us fans luck for the excruciating way they'll manage to break our hearts this spring." They didn't disappoint.

I wouldn’t be shocked either, but I think the Kolzig/Dafoe story line might be more comparable.

Yeah, I figure Dafoe fits the story better chronologically, but he certainly never made the immediate splash with the Caps like Carey or Varly did. Since I’m stretching as it is, maybe Neuvi will be the Dafoe to Varly’s Lacher. Of course, none of this matters if they both turn out good. Let me go find some wood to knock on…

by ThePeerless on May 26, 2010 11:12 AM EDT up reply actions
I’ve had this feeling for a while as well. Neuvirth is a solid technical goalie that will have a long, very good career.
Varlamov is has a higher upside because of how dang athletic he is, but he’s also more prone to mental lapses, and technical breakdowns.
Both are young so I refuse to make a prognostication yet, even though right now I think you’re right. But then again that’s why you are peerless when prognosticating.
not to pick sides, but Varly has made significant strides in “quieting” is game and becoming more technically sound. I still think Neuvy has the edge there, but Varly’s closing the gap.
all the goalies look more positionally sound this season, more confident, even. Kudos are Archie for the work he did with them.

Varly is a little quieter but I think Neuvirth is going to be more consistent. Pucks don’t bounce off of him very often and I think that is going to be huge going forward.
I waited all year for this?
Hopefully they can follow the arc of late 80’s Roy-Hayward. We’ll see who is Roy and who is Hayward, but I wouldn’t mind taking 2-3 years to find out.
Choking since 1985.
The gap has been closed, and Varly made good progress polishing his game. For the record I think both will be good.
IMO Varly is more likely to have a burn hot/burn out, as goalies tend to do.
Where as Neuvirth is going to be consistent, polished, professional goalie for years, not necessarily elite, but then again you don’t need to be Osgreat to win, only Osgood.

“Can somebody please fix the ice?”
From a Hamilton Bulldogs blog:
The ice at Copps Coliseum needs to be better. The ice was horrible on Monday, so bad in fact that both teams complained about it and the Dogs were thinking of changing their name to The Slush Puppies. And while it’s the same for both teams, the Bulldogs are a better skating team and skating in that slush affected them more. You would think that somebody on the HECFI board or a city councillor would make a point of seeing that it’s good for tonight. If not, it will be another black eye for the city.
This only makes me MORE of a Texas Stars fan. DO NOT WANT the Bears to have to slog around in Hamilton’s slush.
I agree. I don’t like the Hamilton team anyway but this just adds to it. (Though maybe it’s good practice for the future Caps on the team). I think it’s funny that a fan of Hamilton would complain about the bad ice. It undoubtedly helps them execute their stupid boring shut down game. The team (and organization) isn’t exactly known for opening it up and playing high-skill hockey. Bad ice is going to be their biggest advantage against HER (though I do hope it contributes to numerous PK Subban turnovers).
I waited all year for this?
The Stars are not in a traditional hockey market that will never be a “hockey town”. Presumably Hamilton as a Canadian team has all of the hockey prestige and expectation to win and the Stars should be just happy to be here? Did anyone expect them to get this far?
Sound like any team we know?
(I’ve never really cared about minor league hockey, but now I really want to see the Hershey gang down here)
Are you in Austin? I went to school there. I got my sons Austin Ice Bats t-shirts years ago, partly since the oldest one is named Austin (but not really after the city; just coincidence). Is there still a minor league team there?
Yep, the Icebats were unwatchable with a very low/frustrating skill level. The new “Texas Stars” made me appreciate there is a watchable level of hockey below the NHL level.
I’m not sure the Stars should win this year from a sports league perspective as the fans largely don’t even know they’re here (first season) or the significance of the Cup yet. But it would probably mean cheaper seats for me at the Finals…
They’re showing the game on the jumbotron at the arena tonight but the big news in town is the free minor league baseball game going on.
I put on YNC’s fan shot the attendance avgs so far, and the Stars’ have been quite respectable, averaging 5,257 fans for the three games they’ve played, which is about double what Manchester and Hamilton have drawn. Sounds like a solid fan base.
"It hit me on the pants. I had protection. It felt good. Why? I wanted to win."
I didn’t realize relative attendance was that good. I saw a more than half-empty stadium for a round 2 game and was saddened.

I don’t know who I want picked, but I don’t like GMGM’s track record with bloodline picks. He seems to get enamored with the players’ relatives and not their merits and I’d rather not see that again.

I would think jarred has a leg up in development due to his fathers tutelage, and just cause anton and chris have not been world beaters, it does not mean to me, that Jarred will or will not be. I know nothing about him, other than his name.
I don’t think bloodlines are that important. It’s a pretty damn small number of NHL players that were raised by NHL players. The name takes precedence and judgment gets clouded. Anton was a terrible pick, Bourque was a reach, Bouchard hasn’t panned out like his brother. Just say no to famous names.
I waited all year for this?
OTOH I don’t think the name should count against Tinordi. He captioned the U-18’s to a gold and wasn’t on the ice for a goal against. He skates very well for a kid his age and size, and has a good shot.
I don’t know that he has all the tools to be a great two way defenseman but he certainly merits a look at the bottom of round 1 top of round 2 as a stay at home top 4 D on his own.
Great line from Wyshynski
The playoffs beards for the Flyers and Blackhawks are actually quite revealing, and not just because Patrick Kane’s is transparent.
