It’s just a list of players who are “undateable” and why. Ovie’s offense was man crocs and addiction to being shirtless, Varly’s was acid wash jeans, Laich/Green had girly sunglasses, Theo’s offense was mandels, Green also had faux hawk and overgrooming, just to name a few.

Fehr
I may not be the most objective guy when it comes to Fehr, but there is no question in my mind that Fehr’s development into a top line RW is as essential as any player/position in the organization with the exception of Varlamov/Neuvirth and goaltending.
Semin and Knuble are UFA’s after this next season. Semin, unfortunately will be unaffordable, and Knuble will be further along in his twilight years. In order to maintain dominance and flexibility cap wise you must be able to replace players leaving with your own. The RW depth chart is thin, Fehr needs to be a priority, over Schultz and rest of the RFA’s this season.
I hope BB realizes this, more importantly GMGM.
4th Floor, is next, swimvare, undervare, Eric Fehr...
Agreed as far as doing something to avoid an offer sheet from another team, but as he’s not arb-eligible (that I know of), a QO is the only thing that needs to be done.

That’s all that needs to be done.
If he was arb-eligible, I can’t imagine he’d have a strong case at this point, and he’s still a couple years from UFA-dom. Wouldn’t surprise me to see him get a Steckel-esque extension in lieu of accepting the QO.
They're coming.

According to the unofficial cap info, Fehr is arbitration eligible.
"Do not be afraid to ask for credit, for our way of refusing is very polite."
by Laich It Or Lump It on May 18, 2010 8:08 AM EDT up reply actions
I think that’s correct. Fehr is 24, and he has six years of professional experience, which would seem to qualify him under the CBA.
"Ovechkin, what is good in life?"
"To crush your enemies. To see them driven before you. And to hear the lamentations of their captain."
Section 12.1 outlines arbitration eligibility. Fehr signed his first contract when he was 20 years old or less, so he requires four years of professional experience (at least 10 NHL games played in a season) to be arbitration eligible, which he easily has.
"Do not be afraid to ask for credit, for our way of refusing is very polite."

Whoa dude. Sorry to ruffle your feathers. A lot of things we poke fun at are largely exaggerated, often skewed realities. Recent history shows the French surrendered to Germany in about 30 days in WWII. I’m sure you’re going to tell me that we done win the Revolutionary War without the French Navy, which I will agree. Please do not tell me about the Gauls during the Roman Empire.

I think there’s little chance Fehr’s agent suggests arbitration. First, electing arbitration means that Fehr can’t accept an offer sheet. Second, with Fehr’s injury history, and with this being his first offensively productive season, it’s likely that any arbitration award would be a lot lower than what another team may offer him.
Fehr’s nine months older than Brooks Laich was when he accepted his three-year, 6.1 million dollar deal. Fehr’s season was nearly as productive as Laich’s season that year (Laich was 21-16-37, while Fehr was 21-18-39). Downgrade the dollars for Fehr’s injury history and the fact that he doesn’t bring the same “intangibles,” but upgrade the dollar value for the fact that Fehr may be looking for more playing time elsewhere and doesn’t see getting that on our depth chart.
"Ovechkin, what is good in life?"
"To crush your enemies. To see them driven before you. And to hear the lamentations of their captain."
I’m still of the mindset that there was something we weren’t privy to that kept Fehr’s minutes so low. Whether it’s a stanima-thing that was noticed in practice or just him kicking BB’s dog, his output this year (especially against Montreal during the season) should have given him more minutes in the playoffs, but whatever the reason it didn’t happen. Maybe the amount of the offer will force the truth to come out.
"It hit me on the pants. I had protection. It felt good. Why? I wanted to win."
As much as it pains me to think that a head coach is anything less than 100% professional, it is clear to me that BB plays favorites (see Fleischman, Tomas) for whatever reason

One thing to remember is that Fehr likely couldn’t do any sort of conditioning over the summer because of his surgeries last year, whereas Flash at least got some offseason skating in. All things being equal and they’re both healthy now to workout, I’d hope Fehr presses for more Top 6 time this season.

Reading more about Belanger’s (and Tkachuk’s) injury and the details have me completely panicked about my upcoming dental appointment.
God that’s horrific.
It’s ridiculous, I played hockey through high school and club hockey in college and never lost my teeth.
Freshman year I was at practice for ultimate, and a frisbee hit me in the mouth chipping my two front teeth in half exposing the nerves. Right after I was hit I spit to the ground, and then realized I spit out my teeth. My friend was freaking out about it all apologizing like crazy, while I was just like “dude, it’s ok, no big deal”. Went to the health center to get the number for a dentist and to make some calls, and then went back to practice/search for my teeth (never found ‘em. RIP SME’s 2 front teeth. Forever shall they rest at the Bates Football Field visitor’s sideline.) People were shocked/impressed when I came back. It just seemed normal to go back to me.

Pumped up about tonight’s FIN-RUS (2pm ET) Homeland vs Bunch of caps (Varly starting) and deserving God figure Datsjuk. Dilemmas of international hockey.
Russia has used all three goaltenders so far in the tournament but according to Zakharin, the coaching staff has now chosen their starter, and as expected, his name is Semyon Varlamov.
"He will play against Finland, and if things go well, he’ll play the rest of the tournament. He needs to get some more help from the rest of the team, so he can focus on his game and get some confidence," Zakharin said.
So guess who finally earned himself the #1 goalie job for Team Russia? (With delays in earning that honor due to misdirected baggage).
Rocking the Red since 1975
Here’s an interview with Laich after Canada’s loss to Sweden the other day.
…full disclosure, I’ve only watched a bit of it, and only with the sound off since I’m at work and I don’t think I could convince people the Canadian voice they’re hearing is work-related – so I have no idea how riveting it is. But it’s Brooks, so it’s got to be better than at least 73% of the stuff you’ll find on the interwebs today.
Also, hat tip to @jlrpuck on Twitter who would have posted it herself if y’all didn’t scare people so much.
O dear
There’s an unwritten rule in playoff hockey that you never talk about the next series before the current one is done.
The last thing any player, coach or executive wants to do is say something that’s going to get pinned up on the wall of the opponent’s dressing room.
That’s why no one from the Hamilton Bulldogs, or the Hershey Bears, will talk about the mess they’re facing if they end up playing each other in the Calder Cup final.
Make no mistake, the Bears and the Bulldogs have been looking about possible schedules for that series. The fact the playoff schedule for the next playoff series is announced minutes after the previous series ends is no coincidence.
Since the Bulldogs and Bears both have 2-0 leads (prior to Hershey’s game last night) in their best-of-seven semi-final series, we are halfway to a replay of the 2007 Calder Cup final. If that happens, it’s supposed to be a 2-3-2 series with Hershey hosting the first two and, if necessary, the last two. Except that’s all but impossible.
The Bears are locked out of their home, The Giant Center, from May 26-31 because of a visit by the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus. And the Dogs won’t be able to use Copps Coliseum for at least June 2-6, because of the Walking with Dinosaurs show.
Options at the link.
that would be sweet. And a much needed hockey fix.

Steinberg called Dukes out in his post.
Chad Dukes was the only respondent to not put Ovechkin first or second.
“No disrespect to Ovi, but Donovan McNabb is the biggest name in D.C. sports, and it’s not even close,” he wrote. “The juggernaut that is the NFL, combined with the enormity of McNabb’s name and what he has accomplished in the NFC East dwarfs all other stories in D.C. sports this season. Whoever is at the helm of the football team casts the biggest shadow.”
Dukes put Portis second.

OV Just Can't Win, Can He?
He has scored a goal a game leading an undefeated Russian team in the WC’s after a very disappointing NHL playoffs, yet writers find something to complain about.
Article is here. I’m ready to pull my remaining hair out.
But in the last few months, something has happened. Ovechkin has dropped his carefree attitude. He has at times shunned the media and his fans. And, in the process, he has gone from being the face of the NHL to being a complete farce.
Leave the poor guy alone.
By the way – how has 87 done for Team Canada?
Every bursted bubble has a glory! Each abysmal failure makes a point! Every glowing path that goes astray, shows you how to find a better way. So every time you stumble never grumble. Next time you'll bumble even less!
someone needs to tell him that’s a Team Russia mandated boycott. Last time I checked, Ovie decided to act like a leader and place all the blame of his team’s loss on his shoulders, even though it was not his fault alone that the Caps lost. All a certain Canadian did after his team lost was whine about how the refs gave him a penalty and take a verbal shot at the winning team. Tell me who is the farce.

Oh, the author knows:
Even if this is a team policy, it is inexcusable
Ovi being a team guy and following team rules is, in this guy’s opinion, inexcusable. Ovi can’t follow rules, unless of course it benefits the Canadian media.
Guess that lengthly piece he did on Sunday doesn’t count since it was for his fans.
"It hit me on the pants. I had protection. It felt good. Why? I wanted to win."
This current boycotting of the media was different from what happened at the Olympics, according to various Russian websites. This time the players themselves decided not to talk to the media after smoking-gate (had to do it). The coaches were caught unaware about the team’s decision. The team has since changed its collective mind. IMO, it was not a smart move to boycott because it only caused the issue to go another news cycle or 2 over there and get more attention. The mainstream media were upset because it was a tabloid type that got the pictures and ran with it. Apparently, there also is an IIHF rule that each team has to provide at least 3 players to speak to the media after a game.
Be nice if a reporter/journalist/re-gurgitator checked his facts first.
I love how the “poor female fan from far away videoing him” incident as opposed to the accurate “tabloid working duo videoing him for profit” is still being bandied about in articles. I think they just keep picking up the same dubious facts from other articles without any kind of verification.

If the tournament doesn’t matter, why is Ovechkin and so many NHLers playing?
Ewell:
He’s doing it for his country. The same country that apparently told the team not to talk.
Traikos:
Hey, I love Ovie (as I mentioned in the story). Just prefer it if the league’s best player wouldn’t snub the media

What is particularly classy about Crosby is the way in which he dissects a team’s defence. Alex Ovechkin beats goaltenders with his blazing speed and incredible shot. Henrik Sedin uses his imagination and creativity to confuse defenders. But Crosby’s talent is more straightforward. He is like a fullback in football who plows through a hole up the middle. He invites contact. But because he is so strong on his skates and never takes a shift off, he is nearly impossible to bring down.
Um, what? How does that make him “classy”? Entirely inappropriate usage of the word.
never mind that Crosby on-ice conduct is consistently the definition of “unclassy.”

And his behavior towards his teammates isn’t above and beyond — it’s called being a thoughtful human being. He texted Jordan Staal after his injury. Texted. Maybe I’m getting too old to appreciate texting, but he’s having surgery — call him, visit him for a few minutes, something more than “Hope UR ok now!”.
Looks like I picked the wrong season to stop sniffing glue.
This isn’t directed towards either of you, but this is kind of an offshoot of this irrational hatred of Crosby that a lot of people seem to harbor.
So let me get this right: When you’re Captain, texting a teammate after surgery is bad, but if you take your option all the time, that’s OK?

That is certainly how I was felt and I do admire Crosby’s skill and have said so. However, I am thoroughly sick of the “Crosby on a pedestal” articles such as the one that journalist wrote who then a week or so later wrote one slamming Ovi for not talking to the media whereas I see it as Ovi being a team player and abiding by the team’s decisions. What does he want—Ovi to go all rogue. That’s not his style and too many media types don’t get that. They don’t understand just how much of a team player Ovi is.

Boudreau said in a recent interview (maybe the wash post chat?) that Ovie always practiced if he was totally healthy, thus implying he was nursing some injuries if he wasn’t practicing. Can’t really give him a hard time for that.
Bullshit. He’s the Captain. Lead by example.

by Bald Pollack on May 19, 2010 7:29 AM EDT up reply actions
This is a super-late response, but my reaction was less Crosby hatred — I respect his talent tremendously — and more exasperation at this columnist’s disproportionate admiration and praise of him, if that makes sense. In all likelihood, he’s a perfectly nice person, a good captain, etc., but this kind of overblown rhetoric by reporters is frustrating to read. He’s an amazing hockey player, not a saint skating among us.
Hope this clarifies my point — I probably should have just posted this originally rather than go on my initial reaction, which appeared to be more of a shot at Crosby, however inadvertant.

Just as long as we all realize that we’re saying Crosby isn’t the divine-esque captain the media sometimes portray him to be and that the difference as a leader between him and Ovechkin isn’t all that great, as opposed to Ovechkin is great and Crosby isn’t. Sometimes I fear those get mixed up.
