Well played. Loved the Brent Johnson bit at the end.

By the way, have you ever seen anything more immature, lackluster, or wholly disappointing before? But enough about Sidney Crosby’s(notes) moustache, let’s get to his play..
This is great.
They’ll try to take away from the Rocket Richard winner’s one road goal in the second round series by pointing out what men have known for generations – that no matter what kind of weak game you bring to Montreal, everyone scores at least once.
But thats even better. Well done, JP.

Loved it. Although, the reference to the murder during triple-OT might not have been necessary.
You had me at no problem.
That was the only thing I found to be in poor taste, kind of like this retweet by OFB last night

You’re a strong man, Link. I couldn’t look at the caps’ eulogy for three or four days. And when I did, I laughed. Heh.
Yeah, if you take something like this too seriously, you are only causing yourself some much needed stress. That, or you will make a dumb ass post in the Puck Daddy comments, like 99.95% of his readers do.
like 99.95% of hisreaderscommenters do.
I like PD. Wysh usually brings the smart, and the funny. His co-writers, sometimes not so much (JP excluded, of course, because he also brings the smart and funny). I’d guess that the people who comment there represent about .00000000001 of his readers.
Sig temporarily on hiatus.
I meant to say commenters. Thanks for the fix.
I read Puck Daddy everyday, so I agree with you. I actually enjoy his co-writers, too.
MOst of them are good. Except for Adam Lambert. he is an idiot
It's The Wait for Red October. Except rather than Sean Connery, Alex Baldwin, and Sam Neill, it's George McPhee, Bruce Boudreau, and Alex Ovechkin.
Not Tom Clancy, but Gary Bettman. Not the Soviet Kremlin, but. . .well. . . .yeah, the Soviet Kremlin
JP, ever the gentleman, resisted the urge to really pile on, I see. Probably for the best.
"You want to start being part of the Rink? Fine, but more’s expected of you than John/Jane Cap Fan. Carry the cause of informed discussion to the unwashed masses and don’t crap in the yards of other SBN sites if you decide to go over there. They’re passionate about their teams too, no need to troll elsewhere and/or be a sore winner." --BP

Yeah, was surprised it wasn’t worse….To be honest, I’m almost a bit disappointed to not be a little more offended, but it’s still a fine piece of work.
Take it from someone who’s done two, these eulogies are really tough to do— and tougher to do well. JP did a good job, even if there are a couple of inaccuracies that aren’t worth pointing out because it makes me look and feel more petty than I already am today.
"Don't matter who did what to who at this point. Fact is, we went to war and there ain't no turnin' back. I mean, s---, it's what war is, you know? Once you in it, you in it. If it's a lie, then we fight on that lie. But we gotta fight."
This is how I felt reading PensBlog’s Caps eulogy. In the aftermath of a horrible defeat, a team’s own fans are much harder on them than any rival fans could be.
That and the fact that there’s only so much you can get away with on a Yahoo! blog.
And the bottom line that facts hurt a lot more than cheap shots ever could.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
No doubt. I don’t think the average reader realizes the restrictions. I couldn’t even get the word “ass” by the Yahoo! editors. We all know insults and profanity go hand-in-hand so it makes it a lot tougher.
I’m sure you enjoyed typing this up, though.
"Don't matter who did what to who at this point. Fact is, we went to war and there ain't no turnin' back. I mean, s---, it's what war is, you know? Once you in it, you in it. If it's a lie, then we fight on that lie. But we gotta fight."
You were going to use “Ass” in a eulogy about the Caps? I hate you, sir.
"Don't mind WM...he's an all-around jerk."
Hey, it was for the Flyers.
"Don't matter who did what to who at this point. Fact is, we went to war and there ain't no turnin' back. I mean, s---, it's what war is, you know? Once you in it, you in it. If it's a lie, then we fight on that lie. But we gotta fight."

He is taking some heat for the “here’s a white T-shirt to put on so we can all look the same” remark. Apparently fans showing up in $150 jerseys of the same color that they bought themselves is the exact same thing as being handed a t-shirt at the door.

Speaking of which…how is the quality of the jerseys available at Verizon Center? I saw they’re 20% off on Saturday but I can wait for River City or Ice Jerseys to go on sale if they suck. Thanks.
The ones I’ve bought are both pretty good. The letters and numbers are ironed on, but they hold pretty well, at least in my experience. :-)

Haha, I liked that line, because the White Out is so dumb.
And, as a Penguins fan, I really want them to go back to white at home and colors away. It will be fun to take some of the thunder away from the Rock the Red thing. That, and I think the Caps white jerseys are so much better than the red ones.
Conversely, maybe someday teams will get away from black as their dominant color? How boring is that? Not strictly a Penguins jab, either, although there’s no reason you can’t stress the gold over the black. Other than blinding everyone, I guess.
Sig temporarily on hiatus.
you could switch to white home unis, and Caps fans would still show up in red. At this point, it’s rather wrapped up in defining who we are has fans. That, and I’m terrified to think of how much money I spent on red Caps stuff. Can’t afford to replace it all with white!

agree with you on the white uniforms being much better looking than the red.
was the forced switch to dark uni’s for the home team another one of bettman’s bright ideas?
It was to make travel easier after airline security increased. Before, when teams generally wore white at home, they would also occasionally wear their thirds at home, which would be dark. As a result teams traveling on road trips would often have to bring two sets of uniforms with them, which made traveling and getting through security more difficult.

I’ll have to disagree…I will say I like the whites enough that I don’t really want a 3rd jersey…but it’s a nice red color that really sets VC off. Especially for playoff games it seems like those little pockets of people not “Rockin’ it” seems to step it up and it looks pretty amazing. I wouldn’t mind a switch at some point but the entire arena looks great with colors for home right now.
Everything ends badly...otherwise it wouldn't end.

This is so, so, so much better than the Pensblog’s eulogy for our guys. The only thing their eulogy accomplished was to expose themselves as a) not really knowing much about hockey (see chastising BB for benching Flash) and b) being completely incapable of eliciting any sort of emotional response through writing without referring to sexual acts or murdering civilians.
Anyway, it IS really funny to see the commenters there going all OMG YU GUIZE DO THE SAME TING about the white-out line when there’s a clear difference between the two practices.

It’s embarrassing that I see Pittsburgh stuff plastered all over cars, trucks, people, everything but they can’t white the game out on their own?
Either way this was an awesome eulogy and it didn’t resort to the ridiculous or profane.

I agree with this 100%. Those two must be the worst announcers ever.
which, incidentally, will be christened by something almost as unlistenable as Steigerwald and Errey calling a Pens game
This statement is just truth.
Crosby as the type of player who makes everyone around him better. Wait, no there isn’t -they just say that and continue to search for the ideal wingers for The Kid.

The Steigerwald & Errey comment was my favorite. The Johnson stuff at the end was classic J.P.

Tremendous – another good fact you left out is the Pens have as many cups (3) as bankruptcy filings (3) and attempts to relocate.

And mission accomplished, Brent Johnson … mission accomplished.
Best line, IMO.
Great work, JP. I like the tone of it the most. It isn’t too scathing, as to deny Penguins’ fanboys any opportunity to just try to attack the bias. Now they have to really face the facts; facts, you really can’t dispute. The few memes you have in there are also pretty damn funny. That first comment, by the way, pretty much shows the drastic differences between the eloquent eulogy you wrote, and dribble.

really well done, JP. all the best zingers have been justly praised already. but you deserve to read as many kudos as possible, especially if you dared enter the muck below your eulogy.

Well done...
the only thing i might have added was another ode to the demise of the igloo and the memories that many fans have of that place dating as far back as 2005…
Just trying to capture the spirit of the thing...
I would’ve loved for that comment to make it in there. I was back in Pittsburgh for one playoff game, and saw a bunch of people out that I went to college with. They were decked out in Pens gear from head to toe, and I am pretty sure they never watched one game when we were in college together.
(disclaimer: I love bandwagon fans. It’s good for the game, as well as all the organizations. Every team has bandwagon fans, and the only fanbases that can say they have consistent, die-hard fans are the Canadien teams (sans Ottawa), Detroit, and MAYBE Philadelphia (but there have been a lot of empty seats this post-season).
yep. and nobody outside of montreal, TO, philly and MSG can or should make any comments about other teams new fans…

I got into an argument with a Pens fan a few weeks ago. Said he hated Caps fans because they were all bandwagoners, but that his team never had a problem with fans and everyone had been around since the 90’s… sigh
Damn… that would’ve been a good one. I should’ve pulled together a focus group from The Rink to test it first.

Best quote...
Instead, Pens fans have to sit back and watch the Keystone State’s last best hope at a hockey championship in 2010 — the Philadelphia Flyers Hershey Bears.
Imagine a world where the #4, #6, #7 and the #8 seed advance.... oh wait, that's real now.
Would be no consolation to a Pens fan. Don’t think any self-respecting Pens fan would be caught dead rooting for the Flyers or the Hershey Bears.
Rocking the Red since 1975
I know lots of Bears fans who are Pens/Flyers fans. The Capitals only recently acquired the Bears as a farm club, and most of the Bears fanbase are PA residents.
proud 4th line advocate
the only thing better than this article…are reading the stupidity in the comments…for example…someone trying to shut down the whole “lets give out white t-shirts so we can all look the same” by saying and i quote…“RED!”
only problem is that the red isn’t given out. Caps fans just know how to rock the red!
I've often thought of becoming a golf club
hmm what I remember from the Pens this year? Being beaten in every game by not only the Caps but also the Devils and yet making it further in the playoffs than both teams.
And Crosby scoring a ton.
/ year
Bruce Boudreau when asked about Brooks Laich's return to the lineup, he said: "He just adds another dimension to our team. If it was puzzle, he just fits that thing. He completes us."
