My friend, I would recommend adding an avatar to your profile, as it’s been scientifically proven that those with naked profiles tend to walk around with their mouths open for no discernible reason whatsoever.
Additionally, a word or two in the subject line helps collapse an image and reduces the navigation length of a thread for all those who wish to see it. Consider it thinking for your fellow RR.

He pretty much just waved to Moen as he went on by. Jonesy destroyed him at intermission.

I didn’t see the intermission lambasting, but I caught the criticism that they had with the replay in the highlights.
And Gonchar deserves every bit of criticism he gets from that play.

Made Green’s play on Lapierre for Montreal’s second goal in our game 7 look stellar.
by Direction 87 on May 13, 2010 8:05 AM EDT up reply actions
not just the ole, but afterwards he just stopped skating while still in the play! crazy to watch. i’m hoping for gonchar’s sake that he’s injured, and even then i can’t see it as a valid excuse for quitting.

Dunno – the goal where Orpik decided to spend a minute and a half harassing Lapierre behind the net instead of playing defense was pretty bad, too.
'Cause the end of what it was is what it is right now...
And Sid
Sid showing “leadership” with the boarding call 10 seconds in…set the tone for a wonderfully awful night for the pens who really were as inconsistent in this series as they were the whole season.

i really think gonch thought he had help behind him which is why he just forced him to the outside and let him go. kind of like a cornerback in football letting a receiver run by cause he thinks the safety has the guy deep. if the guy is there, its not a bad play…but if he’s not, well…ooops.

i think his rib might have actually already been broken. it’s hard to argue that he was injured, since the team then benched a top-4 defenseman the rest of the series.

Even with help behind you that is a bad play. There is no (good) reason to not pinch him off into the boards and instead let him carry the puck further into the zone.

by Killer_Carlson on May 13, 2010 12:10 PM EDT up reply actions
An interference penalty is a pretty good reason not to pinch him off. You have an elite SCF winning goalie who is better than any other goalie in the playoffs because he won a Cup. You figure he’s going to make that save, right?
I waited all year for this?
Eh, interference might’ve not been called.
But yeah, not even a terrific scoring chance resulted. Fleury last year makes that save.

The thing is, the mistake was way before the Ole. Once the Ole happened Gooch had no option. If he had made contact with Moen it’s an interference. He should have stepped up sooner so he could legally play the body but he was some combination of slow and tired and played some men’s league D right there.
I waited all year for this?
I just watched that goal on the NHLN encore presentation. Gooch had been on the ice for the first 1:15 of the PP and then got hung out to dry. He was bad, and looked horrible, but I put blame more on Kunitz. Terrible giveaway, terrible backcheck. Letang could have helped out more and MAF still needs to come out more and make that save. Terrible all around but Gooch looks like the goat.
I waited all year for this?
Save’s gotta be made, though. Between that one and the leaker for the first goal, MAF didn’t give the Pens much of a chance.

And they say a picture is worth a thousand words!
The Pens folding last night like a deck of cards was like a ray of light on an otherwise dark and gloomy night, one of many without my beloved Caps still competing (see the Pens don’t even deserve okay writing, just mixed metaphors and cheesy similes.)
Now I can root against the Habs.
And maybe now we can be spared the exhausting, pointless, and meaningless Ovi vs Sid comparisons since neither of them had an answer to the Habs, But I’m sure the meme will be that Ovi choked with his ten points and 5 goals whereas Sid’s 5 points and 1 goal just meant that his team let him down.

Being ironic
I realize that the stupid debate will continue for the rest of their careers. I will continued to be irritated by the media’s swooning over Crosby. Therefore the petty part of me is delighted that Crosby and Malkin were likewise shut down, and that the media will need to discuss the whys and hows, and I am looking forward to reading how this Pens/Sid debacle will be characterized.
I credit the Habs though. I may find their game style boring, but they have been playing some inspired hockey. I really didn’t expect them to pull out a second game 7 win against another uber-offensively talented team. To knock off the President’s Trophy winner then the Stanley Cup champs is some feat.
I may even check into TSN later today—been avoiding them like the plague since our loss.
by capsyoungguns on May 13, 2010 10:29 AM EDT up reply actions 1 recs
You might want to avoid them for a while longer. What I learned watching the TSN panel this morning:
Somewhere in a hotel in Germany Ovechkin says now you know how I feel Sid, or actually it might be in a nightclub in Germany it is Ovie ha ha.
Yes it’s well known that the reason he is “sleepy” in the early starting games (like the one I’m watching now Russia-Belarus he doesn’t look very hung over to me btw) is b/c he is out clubbing.
And according to Darren Pang Ovie’s goals against Montreal doesn’t really count because three of them came against Price. This is still a team sport right?
On days like this it makes you wonder if the media is aware of that.
What can I say I’m a JP fangirl. I will follow him into the darkest and filthiest of alleys, even the comment section at Puck Daddy.
And according to Darren Pang Ovie’s goals against Montreal doesn’t really count because three of them came against Price.
Even if that somehow made sense, that still leaves Ovechkin with twice as many goals against Halak than Crosby.

Thanks for the heads-up. It’s a good thing I was too busy today to read further afield. I am irritated enough today with normal life stuff.
Gee isn’t it a shame that Crosby’s team let him down again and again during their series against the Habs! Moreover, because Ovi is just a lazy cherry-picker, those few Halak goals must have been of the cherry-picking variety! And therefore not really worthwhile.
I blame Wise for the party boy accusations—his rant accusing them right after game 7 was incredibly unprofessional.
by capsyoungguns on May 13, 2010 8:56 PM EDT up reply actions
My ideal scenario: Flyers win tomorrow and then get crushed by the Habs in the conference finals. Then the Habs go on the the Cup finals and get swept by either the Sharks or the Blackhawks. It would be interesting to see every team in this general area get eliminated by the Habs. Like three brothers quarreling amongst themselves until their dad comes in to shut them up.

Bears win! Bears win!
And what a fun game it was too. Everyone was worried they’d be rusty after the long layoff, but they came out guns blazing and Collins scored 16 seconds into the game. Apparently the ‘rust’ showed up in the third, when they seemed to get a little winded and Manchester scored twice.
Here’s an excerpt from Ed Frankovic’s always-excellent gamer:
As I mentioned, Alzner and Carlson were so dominant and there were numerous shifts where they just appeared to be at another level than the others on the ice. Carlson, who was super down the stretch with the Caps, seems to be even more aggressive in the AHL when paired with King Karl and there were several instances where he was almost like a fourth forward on the ice as he helped create lots of offensive chances for Hershey. It is ironic though, that on one of the rare occassions when Alzner jumped up in the play, the Bears scored.
"We don’t talk too much about jumping into the play or anything like that. If he has a chance, I know he is going to go. If I have a chance I’m going to go but I’m going to make sure I let him know to stay back because I’ve found that I’ve learned alot from him this year on just getting my timing better on jumping into the play. So when he was [in Washington] that is what I was doing a lot more. We just have to watch each other because [Manchester] has a great transition game," said #7 on how he and Carlson handle adding offense from the blue line.
Nice game but the attendance was a little disappointing, just 7,700. Maybe Hershey fans are getting spoiled and just waiting for the Finals.
In Bruce’s chat the other day, he mentioned Pinizzotto as a guy who has a chance to crack the roster next year. Sounds like a scrappy dude with a little offensive upside. Anyone who’s seen him in action have a sense of whether he can be effective at the NHL level?
I know he’s got wheels and balls. I don’t know about his hockey sense but if he’s got that I don’t see how he doesn’t at least get a look as a 4th liner in the next few years.
I waited all year for this?
There may not be room in the lineup this coming season, but there will be serious salary cap pain next summer, and we may be waving ’bye to some of our besties.
Agreed. We are getting to the point where we need the cheap HER replacements. Having veterans like Brads, Steckel, and Gordon all at the same time is a luxury that we won’t afford much longer.
I waited all year for this?
The cap situation even this year could tighten up in a hurry, pending what happens with Schultz, Baxter, Fehr and Mr Sec Ondli Necenter.
I’d be perfectly pleased to see some ELC guys pitching in on the 4th line at the expense of Gordo, Brads or Stecks.

Yeah I have hopes for Gordon. He can skate, has decent hands, and seems to battle. Kyle Wilson is no doubt smart enough, I just wonder if he skates well enough to compensate for his smaller frame. He’s been very opportunistic when I’ve watched him, but I just don’t know if that’s sustainable at the NHL level. I wouldn’t count out Beagle or Pinner either. I think those guys could be our future 4th line.

So is Dreger implying that Malkin will accept an invite, or he won’t be invited?

Russia has filled its available callup slots. They brought up Dats and I think another guy from the K. Each team can add two more skaters and one more goalie before for the second round and then the rosters are final. No room at the inn for Geno.
Found the rule:
From the start of the Qualification Round and Relegation Round (and until two hours before any of the following games), the teams are entitled to add two additional players (skaters or goalkeepers) to their roster.
No players have to be deleted from the roster. From the start of the Qualification Round and the Relegation Round, the teams can thus carry a maximum of 25 players (skaters and goalkeepers in any combination).

Im still terrified that Caps management is going to use the “we ran into a ‘team of destiny’” excuse to not make any changes for next year. This win just makes it that much more likely
#NeedsMoreBradley
not likely. team of destiny or not, they should not have lost to the canadiens this year or the pens last year or gone seven with the rangers. changes will be made because everyone knows this team needs center depth and some help on d. even if they had won it all, changes were inevitable.

Don’t worry, there will be a ton of changes this off-season. Almost definitely, they will not resign ShaMo, BMo, Corvo and Walker. They could well trade either Flash or Semin. They’ll promote Alzner full-time and add another top six D-man and they’ll acquire a #2 center. That’s a lot of changes for a team that won the President’s Trophy.
Does that mean we have to root for the Bruins or Flyers in the ECF? I’ll watch the games from within toilet-running distance if that happens.
Every time Matt Bradley scores a goal, everyone inside the Beltway should get the next day off from work. It's only fair.
Wasn’t it just a few weeks ago that so many of us laughed at Washington’s Alex Ovechkin and accused him of gagging against the Montreal Canadiens in the first round of the playoffs? The Not-So-Great 8 could do nothing to prevent his Capitals — the NHL’s President’s Trophy-winning team — from losing Game 7 at home.
Well guess what?
That was Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Sergei Gonchar and Marc-Andre Fleury who hair-balled it against the Canadiens on this night. They not only did nothing to help the Penguins win Game 7 of the second-round series. They sabotaged their chances, putting a premature end not just to the arena, but to their defense of their Stanley Cup.
i take no solace in the fact that the pens loss. doesnt bring the caps season back. however, i do like to see comments like these from the post gazette. the acusations of ov gagging were so overblown and rediculous but made a good story line. seeing the same thing happen to a team that truely “knows how to win in the playoffs” can hopefully put to bed some of the premature and stupid ov v sid comparisons. also hope it takes some of the heat off of BB and the he got outcoached meme. not his finest hour for sure, but byslma won the stanley cup last year. did he get outcoached too?

Bondra Interview
The general manager of Washington’s George McPhee said he did not quite understand why Ovechkin and Semin went to the World Cup. “They will not be any better as players.” You agree?
– No. Boys want to fight for their country. They grew up in Russia, there have learned to play hockey. Now it’s time to recover debts. You can not just pick up. If you had the chance to speak for the national team, it can not be missed. McPhee looks at this situation as a manager of the club hockey. This is normal. But the medal has a second side. How to stop the guys, if they rush to the national team?
You have seen a series of playoffs “Washington” with “Montreal”. Why is your former team fiasco?
– I was even in the seventh game … We must pay tribute to the “Canadians”. Their Slovak Galaxy goalkeeper played excellently. A “Washington” started to play as “Montreal”. That is, they imposed a foreign hockey. I’ve seen "Capitals for a month before – it was a fury on the court! And then the Washington "was to act on defense and therefore lost confidence. Moral: You can not change myself.

Interesting observation from Bonzai. Greenie pretty much said the same thing, that he was trying to concentrate on his play in his own end so he was timid about jumping into the play. Not to take away Halak’s play, but still it’s something to ponder over the summer.

true, but this year the caps really should have been favorites in the east, not the pens (IMO, but also by virtue of the regular season). if last year doesn’t mean dick, then the caps loss as a number 1 seed is a lot worse than the pens loss as a number 4 seed. i don’t think we have a lot of leeway to point fingers and feel good about ourselves; honestly, i’d be a little timid if i were in JP’s position writing this thing.

I can understand that. We still haven’t won and they did. I’m sure the sting they feel is less than ours. But at the same time, after all the bullshit we’ve listened to about Crosby being the best winner and what not, it’s nice to see his team lose to a less talented team and for Crosby to be invisible. Honestly, I would just mock TPB Eulogy for the Caps since it was basically a carbon copy. Just swap Flash and Ponikarovsky and you have the entire blueprint for a Eulogy.
And after watching that series, I’m even more convinced that the Caps were better than the Pens this year. Fucking Halak. At least PIT is still in cap hell and doesn’t have much cheap help on the way. They’ll be essentially the same team next year (assuming that Malkin trade stuff is BS). I think we are built better going forward than they are and their stranglehold on the east is broken, so I’m happy.
I said last series that we are a year behind SJS, not PIT. Well, that doesn’t look so bad about now.

Pens Fans Roster[de]bating has started
Over on Pensburgh they’re talking about what they do next year. I recognize all the classic signs from our own playoff demise.
The Pens are in a bit of trouble. They have about $10M in cap space, and they need 3 wingers (one each for the top 3 lines) and 3 defensemen. If you believe Alex Goligoski is a legit Top-4 defense, then they need a partner for him and two bottom pair guys. If you think Goligoski is a bottom pair guy, then they need 2 top-4 defense and a 6th D to partner with Gogo.
One of their wings will have to be Eric Tangradi, who is on an EL deal. He’s been inconsistent in the A, so he’ll have to take a big step forward.
"You want to start being part of the Rink? Fine, but more’s expected of you than John/Jane Cap Fan. Carry the cause of informed discussion to the unwashed masses and don’t crap in the yards of other SBN sites if you decide to go over there. They’re passionate about their teams too, no need to troll elsewhere and/or be a sore winner." --BP

You got that right. At the risk of hyperbole, I can’t think of anything more important to a team than getting significant contributions from guys on EL deals.

And many other guys. You look at how many AHL guys that we could give NHL duty to and we are spoiled. They don’t have many at all. Thank God.
I waited all year for this?
Sorta. There’s a point when you have to give guys a chance and good GMs do that. I know Hainsey has talked about it a lot; the Habs had him buried in the minors and gave him a chance by putting him on waivers even though they could have gotten something back. Part of me thinks maybe GMGM was doing that for CBo. Our guys aren’t there yet but it’s a valid concern.
I waited all year for this?
In other farm news, Dustin Stevenson is in Hershey, and so is Delly. But John Walton (on Twitter) said he didn’t know how long they would be staying. I’m not sure how to parse that.
The Penguins do not have a very strong or deep farm system. Their team is more or less the core of Crosby-Malkin-Fleury-Staal and whoever they cobble together around it. Letang and Goligoski are decent defensemen, but I’m not thinking there is much more upside to either one of them. The rest of the team is quite literally interchangeable parts. That’s good, in a way, because it should never be a source of cap problems. It’s bad in another way because you’re always forced to tinker with spots you really shouldn’t have to be tinkering with on a continuing basis (like the wingers on the top line? Getting wingers, period?)
If you've read this far...seek help.

Letang will probably have to play top-pair minutes next year, which is a notch above where he ought to be, imo. Same with Goligoskion the second pairing.
On one hand it’s great to have Staal as your 3C, in that he’s easily the best 3C in the league. On the other, his $4M cap hit is a lot to allocate to 3C, and that is part of the struggle at wing.
The lack of talent in the farm is a problem, as they are going to have to settle for journeymen types due to the cap situation. They might be able to splurge on one talented wing, but if he gets injured they’re screwed.

We might already have seen that team’s high point. The key with that team isn’t so much Crosby as it is Malkin. He’s the player — a no. 2 guy who is world class — that no other team has. If he;’s on, the Penguins could dress chipmunks on his line and win games.

Here’s what I posted over at PensBurgh:
First, Condolences
If anyone knows how you feel this morning, it’s a Caps fan, and I know it’s not fun.The main thing the Pens need, and it’s just what they’re going to get, is rest. With some extra time off, Crosby and Malkin probably go back to being dominant. When those guys are dominant, you can win games with journeymen wingers. When they’re not, you can’t. Malkin looked like he had nothing in the tank all year, and Sid certainly looked like he was out of gas in this last series. Hey, it happens. They’ve played a lot of extra hockey these past 3 seasons.
If it were me, I’d concentrate on keeping the strength down the middle and concentrate the available cap dollars at the D positions. Then add in warm bodies at the wings. With the $10M available, if you add a couple hot FA wings, you’re going to eat up the heart and liver of that cap space and then you’re truly screwed on D.
All the teams have holes, now, thanks to the salary cap. The Pens can bank on depth down the middle, competent defense and goaltending, and try to scrape enough goals out of the wings to make a run.
I’m not on board the step-back wagon. As Peerless noted, if Malkin is on his game, he can carry his line. I’m betting the Pens recharge their batteries and are a force to be reeckoned with next year.;

Well, that than Malkin playing behind Sid maybe. But hey, I just look at TOR and Kessel and that means Malkin is worth a ton.

Boswell brings the burn in chat today. Wow.
Kearneysville, WV: Yes, you are correct, the Habs did beat the Pens and Capitals. Can we now say that guy Crosby is over rated since his ‘team’ lost to Montreal and he only scored one goal in seven games? These comparisons seem ridiculous.
Tom Boswell: Oh, I thought Crosby missed the whole series with an injury. Wasn’t he out with two broken ankles?
He played like it.
Ovechkin was good against the Habs, just not goods enough. Crosby stunk it up. Who cares if Canada won the Olympics? Hockey is their sport. They should. Big deal. (Okay, I know it’s a big deal.) But, right now, I’d take Eight over Crosby.
Last night, after his stupid penalty in the first 10 seconds the biggest play/mistake of the game since it gave the habs an instant 1-0 lead Crosby just disappeared. Did he and Gonchar have a plane to catch?
As for lame excuses, I’ve never heard Ovechkin say anything like Crosby’s whine: “I don’t know how that’s a penalty (for boarding) in the first 10 seconds of Game Seven. Yes, I’m stunned.”
They called it for the same reason it’s been called in every minute of the season, dope. It wasn’t even close. If Ovechkin had done it, it would have been called borderline dirty, too.
Crosby was “stunned” because they had the guts to call it on HIM in his own building.
I always hated the Igloo. Nothing but bad memories. Glad to see ‘em close the barn that way.
The Pens lost even though they had been given fair warning by the Caps-Habs series that Monmtreal was good, hot and playing a system that would thwart their style. That just says to me that they were ready to be taken and that, if the Caps had beaten Molntreal, they’d have handled the Pens, too. That’s what I thought all season undefeated vs Pitts and I think it even more now.

So true that if Ovie had leveled a hit like that it would have been controversial, where as Crosby does it and it’s just a mental mistake. However, I don’t think most writers are going to take it easy on Crosby based on what I’ve seen/heard so far. He’ll get his just criticism.

Boz added these points:
Bruce Boudreau’s wonderful chat here yesterday, always so honest, seems to show that the Caps have curled up for the summer with the Hot Goalie, We’re Better, We Didn’t Really Choke, Don’t Need To Change Much line of easiest possible excuses. There’s truth in all of those points. But you don’t get better by focusing on them. You need to look at one goal in each of the last three games and say, “That isn’t ALL the goalie. If you let those guys get even one goal ahead, they’ve mastered a style that’ll drive you crazy if you can’t score in close and ugly.”
On point, at least where BB’s public utterances have been. Sure hope GMGM or Bruce himself realizes that it just ain’t so…

I feel proud too. If anything I believe that Ovi takes too much of the blame for losses on himself. But I’ve always loved that about him, how quickly he takes on the responsibility for the teams’ play. In general I think the whole team acquitted themselves well after the series loss. Starting with Ovi they all were complimentary of how the Habs and Halak played. They showed respect for their opponents.

Bears updates via Tim Leone:
Optional practices are typical the day after a game in the playoffs. But since their Game 1 win over Manchester Wednesday night followed a 12-day layoff, the Hershey Bears went to work Thursday at Giant Center.
“We’ve had enough days off,” head coach Mark French said. "It probably would have been a typical option day coming off a game, but we thought that skating would be the right thing.
"It wasn’t by any means a real hard practice. But it probably was more strenuous than our usual [day-after-game work]."
The only players missing from the Game 1 lineup were John Carlson and Mathieu Perreault.
Due to a death in the family, Carlson left after the game Wednesday night and was scheduled to return to the team Thursday night.
Perreault got the practice off due to a minor lower-body injury but is listed as probable for Game 2. The centerman exited late in the first period but returned to finish the game and didn’t appear to be slowed.
"Just a maintenance day," French said. "Obviously could have skated. We didn’t want to put anybody in a position to practice that would benefit more from a day off."
oh no! Poor John, my condolences.

I’ve been outrageously busy over the last few days, so apologies if this was previously posted.
For those of you who like GVT:
A spreadsheet going back to 1944
I said this on twitter, but two things really jump out at me:
Bobby Orr putting up 30+ five out of six years from ‘70-’75 is, well, unbelievable. You guys know that I’m not a huge fan of comparing across positions or teams with GVT, but holy crap. Those same seasons, he was putting up no less than 9.9 in his defensive GVT (No one hit that level this season) and as high as 14.6. The average player back then wasn’t as good as the average player now, so the really great ones stood out more, but even so, those are boggling numbers.
The other thing is Dominik Hasek’s dominance in the late ‘90s. Those of you who look at GVT stats, look at these numbers for goaltender value: 42.6, 56.6(!), 40.0, 51.9, 57.1(!!), 56.1. You have got to be kidding me. If those numbers are even remotely accurate, the Vezina voters had it right and Hasek has been robbed in discussions about greatest of all time. For reference, Roy’s best season is a 37.3, Brodeur posted a 31.8 in ‘96-’97, Plante posted a pair of 43.3s five years apart, Sawchuk posted a 35.5 in his third season and Dryden put up a 49.5 while never getting over 35 in any other season. According to GVT (an admittedly flawed and non-conclusive tool), the comparisons aren’t even close. It’s Hasek in a landslide.

I’ve always been of the opinion that Hasek in his prime was better than any other goaltender in NHL history. He was just absurd.

Right, and that should be a factor, but if I had to choose any goalie in his prime to backstop my team, I would pick Hasek over anyone.

If we want to arbitrarily declare a 25 GVT season as elite (top 5-10 goalies for that season), Roy has 6 seasons at that level, Brodeur has 3, Hasek has 8 over a 14 year span. Again, GVT is flawed, but it’s pretty clearly still Hasek by that metric. Guy played from ’90-2008 and a bunch of those years were flat out dominating in a way that Brodeur and Roy never were. They all had long, productive careers, Hasek was just better.
Only YOU can prevent idiots from commenting!
by Knee high to a duck on May 13, 2010 1:09 PM EDT up reply actions
These GVT ratings back that up. I forgot to mention this, but those numbers were consecutive seasons. You can’t cherry-pick better numbers from the other goalies in the discussion. You can’t even cherry-pick GVT numbers from all of them put together to match that stretch. It’s…impressive.

GVT isn’t great comparing across teams, I can only imagine the flaws of comparing across eras. Comparing the goaltending numbers at the times that Roy and Hasek started their careers is not easy.

by Killer_Carlson on May 13, 2010 11:50 PM EDT up reply actions 1 recs
GVT is faaaaar from a perfect tool for evaluating across teams and positions, I agree. As far as era goes, I find it somewhat suspicious that the two highest generators of offensive GVT played in the most-wide open, highest scoring era ever. The late early 70s when Orr was playing were pretty high scoring as well. That said, Roy and Hasek are fairly contemporary in that they have significant career overlap and are near the same age. Hasek, however, hit his prime right as the game got trappy, whereas Roy did most of his heavy lifting (but certainly not all) before ‘96. It’s hard to know what Roy’s numbers would have looked like on the Sabres and vice-versa, but there’s not that much difference in era here. Hasek was the Sabres, much in the way that Roy was the Canadiens, he just couldn’t quite get over the playoff hump.
With the Avs though, Roy gets a lot of help. Some of those late 90s Avs squads were silly-loaded.
Only YOU can prevent idiots from commenting!
by Knee high to a duck on May 14, 2010 6:18 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions
There isn’t a huge difference in era, but I think the difference you pointed out is extremely significant in looking at career stats. Roy played for almost a decade in a much more wide open game, and the major reason there is significant overlap between their careers is because Roy was a top goalie in the league for almost 20 years.
Of all our iniquities ignorance may be the worst

Ted is still paying it. For the salary cap we got off the hook, and there will always be ways to do that, but Ted didn’t just get to say “you stink, I’m not honoring the deal.”

I think that if the terms of the deal were “you are entitled to X dollars every year for as long as you perform sufficiently”, and not “you are X dollars every year even if you choose to take a dump on the ice 82 times a season”, I would be happier.
Players who get cut are welcome to seek a new deal with whomever they choose for as much money as someone else wants to pay them. It’d be much better all around for everyone, except maybe Roberto Luongo.

So what about guys that vastly over-perform? Do they have a right to hold out? I personally like knowing that AO is in the fold for the next decade. He can’t decide he doesn’t like it and just nix the deal. It works both ways.
I waited all year for this?
Well, the NFL’s system is what I contrast the NHL’s system with, and the NFL’s seems to be working quite well. Clubs have all the leverage once a player is under contract in the NFL. On the other hand, NFL players get a huge lump sum payment just for putting pen to paper. It’s a trade-off which tends to give players large incentives to perform, and clubs the ability to jettison players who do not perform.
There is, you mention, the issue of underpaid players holding out. Both systems have their problems, but I prefer the more flexible one.
You had me at no problem.
There are a ton of differences. First, NFL players are drafted at 21-22 normally so they are much more developed and you have a better idea what you are getting. I also hate the fact that rookies who have never played have all that leverage and can demand huge dollars. I’d rather the money go toward the veterans that have proven something. Then you have to consider the higher injury rate in the NFL.
The NHL could stand to be more flexible, and Brian Burke definitely is vocal about that, but I hate the way contracts work in the NFL. They are essentially meaningless if you aren’t the owner or the player. The fact that either party can void a contract is ridiculous.
I waited all year for this?
Injuries are a great point. If you get injured badly, you want to be under a long-term guaranteed contract. But NFL players don’t have that luxury, despite the higher injury rates. NHL players have that luxury, and they don’t get hurt as often(but I would argue that when they do get seriously injured, it tends to be much worse in the NHL, thanks to pucks to the head and skate lacerations).
Players can’t void contracts in the NFL. If they’re under contract and don’t like it, tough. Only the team is allowed to end the contract. Players can try to make a lot of noise and convince the team to renegotiate, but the team can tell the player to pound sand.
You had me at no problem.
solution: don’t sign guys to bloated contracts!

I can’t wait to watch them implode in three years with Keith, Toews, Kane, Hossa, and a bunch of Quintin Laings.

All depends on how they handle the summer. They could set themselves to be great for a long time. And part of me expects they will.
I waited all year for this?
Yeah, but a man can have his optimism. I’m kinda enjoying watching Chicago and Detroit have problems with their future when Nashville has the best farm system in the league (per HF, of course, which I somewhat disagree with) and will be operating with a full budget soon. Trotz and Poile have never been able to spend up to the cap ceiling. Can’t wait.

Yeah you should be excited. I’m just saying CHI is going to be able to say “we have a bunch of guys that have been (at least) to two straight WCF, you better offer something good.” And then let the bidding frenzy happen and cherrypick some good deals. I guarantee they end up with some first round picks and good-to-great prospects out of this. If they play it right they can re-tool very quickly, I think.
I waited all year for this?
True; and I think Detroit will be in more trouble than Chicago. And lets face it, Hossa/Toews/Keith/Kane is still a playoff team even if you are capstrung.

True story. And they won’t lose the entire supporting cast and they’ve got at least a couple promising prospects. If Niemi continues to play good hockey they could be fine.
I waited all year for this?
I went into the NSH/CHI series thinking Niemi was a product of the ridiculous shot differential and Chicago’s good D (and that Rinne was much better). I still think Rinne is much better but Niemi’s no slouch. The way he’s played so far is enough to win a Cup.

That’s actually very intriguing. I’m not sure Semin and Alzner are enough.
Every bursted bubble has a glory! Each abysmal failure makes a point! Every glowing path that goes astray, shows you how to find a better way. So every time you stumble never grumble. Next time you'll bumble even less!
That would be the meat of the deal. Perhaps a pick or mid tier prospect, but I don’t think the proposal is unfathomable IF we’re talking about trading Malkin and getting the Pens winger help.
But, since I think trading Geno is ridiculous its a moot point really.

I won’t begrudge them their hysteria especially in lieu of trading Chatty McChubbycheeks. Although they should never have locked up both of them (not to mention Staal) for the deals they did either in money or in term.
They're coming.

Probably an entirely random date like August 7.

(You do know that’s Sid’s birthday, right? 8/7. In other words, not so random. If that was the date. Which it probably isn’t.)
I had forgotten that. Wouldn’t surprise me if they did set it up like that.

So last night I was in a bar surrounded by Pens fans. I kept clapping and cheering the Habs and these guys started making fun of me for being Canadian and a Habs fan. I didn’t say anything, just kept clapping and cheering. Now I know how Becca feels. F&B H.!

Or Jared’s head is so far up his ass that the only team that even thinks they have a chance of salvaging him is a team with his older brother.

Carolina had a shaky season, but they aren’t a halfway house for wayward Staals.

I have no idea. I’ve said that, and I heard his dad say that around the time Jared was drafted, but I just don’t believe it looking at the numbers. If he’s that talented he should put up better numbers in the OHL even if he doesn’t give a shit.

I’ve seen an interview in which they all agree that Eric is the most talented, but is also called out for being the laziest of the Children of the Sod.
Looks like I picked the wrong season to stop sniffing glue.
Eric is the oldest. Jared is the youngest. So that would apply to Jared. But to me, Eric does look like the most skilled of the bunch.
I waited all year for this?
True. When he cares to show up, his game is very strong — hovering somewhere just beneath Backstrom, which may be higher praise then he deserves. The big problem with CaneStaal is his seemingly lackadaisical approach to team play.
Looks like I picked the wrong season to stop sniffing glue.
