Unfortunately some of the Caps still have maturing to do, mostly Tom Poti.
That was a great goal by B.Mo, unfortunately it was his only highlight of the year.

No, let’s disregard Poti’s excellent playoff performance. It doesn’t fit the narrative.

On the topic of maturity, maybe they need to take themselves a little less seriously. Never going out once for three months? At that age? Damn that’s some commitment right there. Perhaps a night on the town here and there would have done them some good.

I know for me, between work and family stuff I’ve been working pretty much 7 days a week for a couple of months now and it’s dragging me down. Yeah, probably a couple of nights off here and there might have helped.
LET'S GO CAPS!!!
Even when it’s something you enjoy and love (like hockey is for them, presumably), focusing solely on one thing for months can really be draining. Everyone needs some time to decompress.

Agreed. Dinner, going out for a couple of drinks, maybe catch a movie are all good ways to unwind. None of these things prevented them from being successful during the regular season. When you become spartan when it’s not in your nature, then that can add to the stress.
(Yes, I know about the avatar hounding - just pretend mine is invisible.)
Never going out once for three months?
I think that assertion might be up for dispute.

Per Nate ewell tweet, wise called one of the caps to apologize after that. Didn’t say who and not sure wise mentioned it on the air.
Seems to me that when you go on the air making such accusations, you should have your facts right…and if you needed to apologize for something you said you should do it on the air too.

Mike Wise is Tony Kornheiser without any of the funny. He’s so desperate to get his own national gig that he’ll say or do anything.
This. He wants to be Tony, and in all honesty he has plenty of journalistic talent, but none of the comedic timing. For some reason, he’s found love on radio and Comcast. Boo.

Well, after watching the Pens-Canadiens game last night, I think it’s fair to say that Montreal’s win over the Caps was no fluke and maybe, not even an upset. That they could beat Pittsburgh without their top two defensemen is pretty amazing. If I’m a Penguins fan, I’m afraid. I’m very afraid.
I don’t know about that, but I am hoping so hard that Pittsburgh fans get to feel our angst on their home ice on Wednesday. Then I can watch the rest of the playoffs in peace. I could even live with Philly coming back against Boston, although I hope that doesn’t happen.
Sig temporarily on hiatus to ease the pain.
I’ll be honest, and might get myself banned, but there is a piece of me that hopes the Pens win. The NHL is such a copycat league the Habs success can’t mean good things for the NHL in coming years. They play such a boring style of hockey that if they knock out the Caps and the Pens I dread how many coaching styles will be revamped in an effort to mimic their success.
Beards are the zenith of manliness. First, they are scratchy and unpleasant to womenfolk. Second, they look awesome. Third, if you have something tasty for lunch, you can enjoy the smell all the way until dinnertime. - RMNB
I’m hoping the Habs beat Pitt, just to prove our loss to them wasn’t just a fluke or some kind of refutation on our style of play. Then if they lose to Boston, that might prove that while that style of play might work, it’s not the best way to do it.
I don’t want the Habs style to become the way everyone plays, but at the same time I don’t want the Pens to once again succeed where we failed.
LET'S GO CAPS!!!
I just want Pittsburgh to lose because they’re, well, Pittsburgh.

I’m with Elliotte, Mike Brady, and Stecks on Pittsburgh. I just can’t bring myself to root for the Penguins.
Sure, I don’t want the Habs’ style to be what teams start to play in the future but a victory by the Pens would mean more of the media fawning over them and their star players.

I’m with you on not wanting Jacques Martin’s crap style to get any more glory. My desire to see the Penguins lose is greater though.

Agreed, except I’d include Pittsburgh in the group that would be underdogs to teams from the west. If the Pens do get to the Finals, they’re going to be so worn down from their two previous runs, I’d favor any western team over them.
They’re the champs until eliminated; I’m not comfortable saying that San Jose or Chicago could beat them.

Gotta factor in the fact that two of the best players on the Wings (Datsyuk and Lidstrom) were injured during that series. A healthy Chicago or San Jose is as good as the 09 Wings. Also, the 2010 Pens are not as good as the 2009 Pens.

I hope the Habs do a “Panthers from 96” or “Ducks from 2003” and win in a manner that is a) boring and b) everyone realizes it is unsustainable because it relies on a goalie playing out of their mind. I’ve had that same fear about the trap copycatting, but if MON can get through the east and get pounded into the ice by SJS and lose in 4 games I think it’ll be OK.
I waited all year for this?
I’ll also retract my hating on Subban after that game. Dude stepped up and played great. I’ll still take Carlson but I don’t think Subban is nearly as bad defensively (or maybe he just had a great game, we’ll see).
I waited all year for this?
Still the announcers I think are giving him too much lip service. I understand the guy stepped in into the playoffs, but Franson, Carlson, Alzner, Letestu (I think), Hjarmalsson (right?) are all rookies too.

When you think that Tampa can’t stoop any lower:
The National Hockey League Players’ Association is expected to file a grievance Tuesday morning against the Tampa Bay Lightning on behalf of left wing Stephane Veilleux for not covering costs for a shoulder surgery the Lightning winger needs this week, agent Allan Walsh told the Star Tribune on Monday night.
But they do have a really good reason:
Walsh said the Lightning believes it’s not a hockey-related injury because it can’t pinpoint an exact moment on the ice when the injury occurred.
And a plausible explanation to when it did happen:
According to Walsh, "Kurvers suggested maybe he hurt it playing ping-pong."
What can I say I’m a JP fangirl. I will follow him into the darkest and filthiest of alleys, even the comment section at Puck Daddy.
This doesn’t make sense. Even if the injury was non-hockey related, it would still be covered by the NHLPA health insurance — just like your employer would pay for an injury you incurred outside of work under your group plan. I think this has more to do about a potential injury settlement and whether Veilleux must be paid for any time he misses next season. It is Walsh being his usual idiot big mouth self.
I think part of the problem (even most of the problem) is that the player is UFA and clearly not part of Tampa’s plans for next season.
If Nashville pulled this stunt my head would explode instantaneously.

It’s probably not going to happen (remember the Penguins lost Game Six last year in the second round and did OK in Game Seven), but if it did I’d love to hear Jacque Martin channel John Thompson. After Georgetown beat Syracuse in the last game at Manley Field House, JT went to the press conference and said “Manley Field House is now officially closed.” It would be nice to be able to say the same about Mellon Wednesday night.

It matters to a Semin fan who wants to follow him at the WC. Your non-interest in the WC doesn’t mean that others can’t enjoy following their favorite players there.
I think Kovy got the award because they just love him in Russia for being the hero in the WC in previous years. Semin isn’t nearly as popular. RMNB did a post awhile back about the most favorite player in Russia.

I enjoy the WC, but it’s Khazakstan. I don’t understand why player of the game in which Russia was a heavy favorite is that important.

Of course it’s not important in the larger scheme of things and in where we would rather the guys be playing right now. But, given that they are there, and recognition was given, it would be nice for him if at some point he got the recognition when he deserves it, whatever the setting. I doubt he cares about the watch, and may not even care about the recognition. I simply thought he would get it, but I am not losing sleep over it. I’m just enjoying the opportunity to see Ovi and Sasha play, even if it’s on a blurry computer screen (since Universal wants to only show the US losing again and again). We have little else right now.
I was curious about the watch.
As the Official Timekeeper and Official Watch, Tissot is present and very visible at every match, and Tissot presents a special edition T-Tracx Ice Hockey watch to the best player on each team in every match of the World Championships, a way for Tissot to honor these great players and thank them for the enjoyment and passion they bring to the sport.

Gee, any idea what he's talking about here?
The Blue Paint, Verizon Center: Bruce, do you ever get a chance to talk to the referees “off the record” about calls that were made during the game after they have had a chance to look at the play on video? Not that it would change anything, but at least they can explain what they saw or why they called a play the way they did – or maybe even say “Hey, I missed that one”.. or “You guys got away with one there”
Bruce Boudreau: There was one time against Philly two years ago in the playoffs where I was able to show video to a referee after the fact and he agreed he made the wrong call.
And a later item:
I never got an explanation on Ovi’s disallowed goal in Game 7 – not even on the ice.

Yeah, the referee himself came out publicly and said the one in Philly was a bad call. Too late, but a bad call. :-p

Again I was snarking, but not all that well. I thought that Bruce handled the chat pretty well, although there’s probably a couple of areas where he’s always going to deftly duck an answer that people want to hear. (He’s not going to flat out say he screwed up on certain things. I am okay with that for the most part.)

Oh no question. I wasn’t commenting on anything other than that I’d seen that the referee himself had publicly admitted his screwup on that one. Rare, that.

Close call for Broda!
I found the video of Joel’s Chynoweth Cup victory lap. Awkward! Also very, very lucky.
Congratulations, Butterfeet!
From Bruce’s WaPo chat:
Bethesda, MD: FREE ERIC FEHR! He deserves more minutes!
Bruce Boudreau: Who should get less minutes – Knuble or Semin?

Also:
Arlington, VA: Bruce…
about how many hours per week of your offseason are focused on hockey in some form? Are there any players, in particular, that you are excited about getting a look at during the dev. camp?
Thanks.
Bruce Boudreau: I do something with hockey every day. For development camp, I am excited to see Marcus Johansson, who we took in the first round last year.
He sidestepped that rather neatly, did he not. Though he is correct, Flash plays two different positions and doesn’t “directly” compete for space/ice time.
Big time side-step. And the correct answer is both. Play the top two lines a little less, so that that 3rd line can get an extra cycle or two in on the ice. Fehr doesn’t need to be moved up the depth chart, just use his line more often, he’s proven that he can score at a high rate when he’s on the ice and most of that is at 5 on 5.
LET'S GO CAPS!!!
Epic fail, Bruce. Good God.

Any insight into how the Bs have let the Flyers back in it? Were the previous games just that that close?

You have a chance to close out and they come up with that kind of effort, losing 4-0 at home. That’s got to be a bit disheartening. Not being able to show up when it matters the most, sounds like the Caps circa-forever.
ugh it sucks
hoping they can Wednesday

Something interesting I just realized, out in the West the winning seeds for round 1 were the 1, 2, 3, & 5 seeds, while in the East it was the 4, 6, 7, & 8 seeds winning.
LET'S GO CAPS!!!
yeah, my husband noticed that, too. Very strange, I wonder if that’s ever happened before, where one of each seed advances.

“Teams win hockey games,” said Canadian forward Brooks Laich. “The best team is going to win the tournament. It’s not going to be the team with the best players, it’s going to be who can execute the best.”
Coulda used that quote two weeks ago Mr. Tire.

Laich added, “Except when it comes to Sidney Crosby, who is single-handedly responsible for every victory of every team he’s played on. No team victories there. Those are all Sid.”

I don’t think this is true. The US won in 1980, but they weren’t the best team. Carolina won in ‘04, but they weren’t the best team. What stands out in that quote is execution. The team that executes the best wins the tournament, not necessarily the best team. He contradicts himself.
All the Caps needed to do was execute and adjust to the Habs style of play. They didn’t. They lost because of their inability to chased down the ugly goals, and tried to win games with highlight reel stuff. I’m just sick and tired of hearing the excuses as to why the Caps didn’t show up in the post-season. It wasn’t because they got beat by a superior team.
Kent Carlson
I did see when clicking on the Todd Nelson link that he shares the honour of " all-time leader in goals-per-game by a blueliner" with journeyman defenseman Kent Carlson who scored 1 goal for the Caps in 2 games he dressed for in 1988-89. An American defenseman who also played for the Habs and Blues, he was also injury prone. Even his Legends of Hockey (loosely applied term in this case) has this quote from this mother on it: “Every time the phone rang at five in the morning, we knew he was injured again,”
