Monday Caps Clips: Underway at Worlds
Your savory breakfast links:
- Alex Ovechkin opened his World Championships by scoring the game-winning goal on a Slovakian goalie. Yeah, the irony's a bit rich. [IIHF, Alex Ovetjkin, RMNB]
- A letter to AO. [IIHF]
- A flood of "By the Tens" from Peerless since our last Clips (including Ovechkin, Alex Semin, David Steckel and Boyd Gordon), so spend some time catching up on 'em this morning. [Peerless]
- Assessing the defensemen and goaltenders. [MD Pro Sports, MD Pro Sports]
- And the Caps Smythe goes to... well, let's just say Tom Poti was robbed. [RtR]
- Is the franchise cursed? [OFB]
- Some Caps art. [RMNB]
- Get to know one of the Caps' other owners, Jack Davies. [WaPo]
- Zach Miskovic and stuffed animals (and other, more worthwhile stuff). [Hockey Chronicles]
- Prospect Dustin Stevenson: diamond in the rough? [Star Phoenix (h/t YNC, who has more here)]
- Corsi wins championships. [Hockey or Die]
- Finally, per the HHoF, on this date back in 2002, "Washington Capitals fired head coach Ron Wilson after the team failed to make the playoffs for the first time since 1999."

I’m not really a fan of Lambert, but boy did he DESTROY the Red Wings this weekend.
Really, to call the Wings massively successful would be to undersell their accomplishments. Since the mid-1990s, they have won about a dozen division titles, six conference championships and four Stanley Cups. If the title actually existed — and I’m sure their fans are lobbying for it right now — they would be, in every sense of the phrase, The Team of the Last 15 Years.
And that has made their supporters, who I’m sure are lovely people when they’re not wishing me dead on Twitter, the most repulsive, disgusting, entitled, whinging, crybaby, gutless, ignorant, intolerable conspiracy theorist mutants in all of sports fandom.
Here is just a sampling of some of the less outlandish things their fans have said over the last 18 months or so: Sidney Crosby didn’t shake Nicklas Lidstrom’s hand after the Penguins won the Stanley Cup and this complaint is in no way sore-loserism; Gary Bettman has rigged the NHL playoffs so Pittsburgh wins; Gary Bettman has rigged the NHL playoffs so Phoenix competes because "he owns the team;" Shane Doan is a dirty player; Gary Bettman is personally making sure that every penalty called in the Detroit/San Jose series is harmful to the Red Wings; Chris Osgood is a competent NHL goaltender.
Second, let’s just revisit that Babcock strategy. Lidstrom is 40 years old. He averaged almost exactly 28:30 in the four games Detroit lost to San Jose. He got big-time minutes against Thornton, Heatley, Marleau, et al and proceeded to allow that trio alone to pick up seven goals and 12 assists in five games. This was a brilliant coaching decision by Babcock, oh yes. He was on the ice for seven goals in this series, including both in Detroit’s (and possibly his) swansong. He wasn’t even facing the puck when Marleau buried the series-clincher off the crossbar and in. I understand sticking by the old warhorses that have been through more postseason battles than most NHL players could dream of, but, as with all horses, sometimes you gotta take ‘em out back and put two in the back of their head.
Also, referring to Tomas Holmstrom as “a lump of dried cat turds”, among other highlights
I give the guy all the credit in the world for knocking this one out of the park

Want to be careful how far to push that argument…
This year’s shot differential rankings:
1 WSH 14.0
2 SJS 9.3
3 PIT 6.1
4 CHI 3.9
5 DET 2.6
6 NJD 1.8
7 BOS 1.0
8 VAN -0.7
9 PHI -0.8
10 BUF -1.9
11 NSH -2.3
12 LAK -3.5
13 PHX -5.1
14 OTT -7.9
15 MTL -9.9
16 COL -16.0
And the top shot differentals going back to 1998 (results and record included):
2009 SJS 12.3 CQF 2-4
2008 DET 12.9 SC 16-6
2007 DET 10.0 CF 10-8
2006 DET 13.7 CQF 2-4
2004 OTT 12.0 CQF 3-4
2003 DET 12.8 CQF 0-4
2002 BOS 11.6 CQF 2-4
2001 NJD 8.7 SCF 15-10
2000 NJD 8.3 SC 16-7
1999 OTT 14.0 CQF 0-4
1998 BOS 13.1 CQF 2-4
Seven teams with double-digit shot differentials were eliminated in the first round. Of course, this year makes eight.
In general, I think shots matter, precisely because goaltenders are so tightly bunched (for the most part) around the .900-.930 save percentage range. But I’m not sure how strong a relationship it is.
If you've read this far...seek help.
The only thing I can think is that in a seven game series, teams are able to better figure out the type of shots that are coming and adjust their defense/goaltending to it.
So, say you know that player X’s tendencies are to shoot at right at the top of the circles — you can cheat a little and not worry about the pass. Or you know that they set up a power play a certain way, and like to get shots from the point, so you try and clear out the crease and jump on rebounds.
A good coaching staff can adjust.
Yeah, we know :-) – it was in the links, above :-P.

Basically the OHL is the most well rounded. WHL has really good defense, and the Q features no defense whatsoever but mad offense

With Brandon as the host team, there are two WHL teams in this tournament, and the Hitmen played through the Wheat Kings in the W semifinals to get to the WHL championship round.
I am almost okay with the Barrie Colts’ loss to Windsor in the OHL finals, but not quite. My mood will improve marginally when SDR arrives in Hershey, but I was so hoping to see him play for the MC.
Alas, alas.
Is he headed to Hershey now? Will he play, or will they just have him with the Black Aces?

That’s why it’s always surprising when you see a Q goalie drafted really high and their GAA is 3+ and their save % is in the high 800s. Scouts see the talent, but know that there isn’t much defense in front of them to help.
Yep. And the Caps love WHL D—Alzner, Schultz, Green are all former Hitmen IIRC.

To reiterate JP's comment about the irony in the WC
From the IIHF article, talking about Ovi and his Russian team beating the Slovaks (minus Halak):
Sometimes things go just as expected. The immovable object stays immovable. The underdogs will stay under. And the powerful force can’t be stopped.
Ouch.
"It hit me on the pants. I had protection. It felt good. Why? I wanted to win."

Actually Semin had a lot better quality shots than he had against the Habs. He and Ovie also had some very nice passes to each other. Eventually they will come through and score on one of those. Semin also didn’t really look frustrated. Here’s a pic of him smiling during practice with the Russian team. I actually think this tourny could be good for him to get back on track mentally. The Russian PP did look dreadfully like the Caps PP against the Habs.

Dustin Stevenson
So was he signed by the Islanders, as the caption states, or the Caps, as the article states?
If a nation expects to be ignorant and free, in a state of civilization, it expects what never was and never will be.
So I get the e-mail about Select-a-Seat, if I want to move my location. Except that when you read it, there are probably about a dozen seats available to move to. Pretty amazing. I can remember a couple of years ago, they had to bring players back to town to sign autographs to get people to come to these (and get new people to buy season tickets).

Then I consider myself very lucky. We have a really nice crowd on both sides, in front and two seats behind. We even have our own list for selling tickets we can’t use. The rest of the seats behind are brokered, but for the most part hasn’t been a big problem. Of course, I’d probably be oblivious anyway.

THough it was only a shot differntial table, and not Corsi, It was interesting anyway. However, now that its done, I’de like to see a table on the upsets, because as we know, the Caps outshot the Habs by a wide margin, and the Pens are doing so as well, etc.

The Gill Saga continues in MTL. Corey’s tweets were pretty entertaining yesterday. He and Hal had the same flights from PIT to MTL together.
I’m amazed that more people aren’t cut. Players tend to be really careful when another guy is down on the ice, but in this situation, Kunitz was standing over Gill and a Canadians player checked him, and Kunitz’s skate landed on Gill’s leg when he tried to steady himself.
That same play happens 10-15 times a game. How this doesn’t happen more often is really astounding.
Anybody who doesn’t believe that the Penguins have been blessed by the Hockey Gods clearly hasn’t been watching the Montreal injury report.
one day, the hockey gods will extract their revenge on the Pens. It’s just that that day can’t come soon enough.

The Pens have had their share of bad luck. Michel Briere’s car accident/death after a very good rookie season, Lemieux had cancer (and still came back and won the scoring title after missing two months), and how can we forget that one of their penguin mascots died mid-season, sending the team into a 2-decade spiral!!
I care less about Penguin revenge than that the hockey gods would for just once shine on the Caps.
Sig temporarily on hiatus to ease the pain.
The only two things I can think of is the fact that they drew the Canadiens in the first round. That was the worst possible match up for the Caps and then Backstrom and Poti getting injured. They still should have won that series though. The reasons they didn’t have nothing to do with bad luck. Meanwhile the Pens get Ottawa, probably the easiest match up of all, and on top of that, the Senators were missing two of their best players and then the Canadiens lose Markov in their first game. Like people say, you make your own luck, but little breaks like that do help sometimes.
Lobbies: Green, Carlson, Orlov
I didn’t say the Caps had bad luck. What I would like is for them to get the good fortune the Pens have. Like an injury depleted team in the first round (Ottawa, 2010 and 2008). Like a team getting hit with injuries in the second round (Montreal now). Like the toughest opponents being taken out by other teams (Caps and Devils in the first round, both of whom likely would have beaten the Pens, maybe the Devils even more than the Caps).
Sig temporarily on hiatus to ease the pain.
And you could add their probable next round opponent (Bruins) losing two of their top offensive stars-Sturm and Krejci.
It’s almost as if the worst playoff seeding position to get in the Eastern Conference is 5th. That means the team is stuck playing Pittsburgh in Round 1. It’s more advantageous in general to finish 6, 7, or 8 to get one of the so-called division “winners” than it is to get Pitt who almost invariably loses the Atlantic Division to NJ but should be considered the “de facto” top seed of the East.

Deja Vu All Over Again
Watching these series, I’m struck by the amazing similarities between most of them. You’d think players and coaches would learn from other team’s mistakes, but no. I was reading this report in today’s Chicago Sun Times and aside from a few changes, it could have been written by Tarik after Game Five here.
Woody Allen once said that 80 percent of success is just showing up. Would someone please pass that along to theBlackhawksCapitals? They had a chance to wrap up theirWesternEastern Conferencesemifinalquarterfinal against theCanucksCanadiens onSundayFriday night but were marked absent. A4-12-1 loss at theUnitedVerizon Center means they’re going back toVancouverMontreal for Game 6. They are clinging to a 3-2 series lead for no good reason, other than they couldn’t muster the proper amount of energySundayFriday. In their two playoff series, they have developed a maddening habit of coming out of the locker room as flat as a Kansas horizon.
‘’I wish I knew what it was because it wouldn’t be happening anymore,‘’John MaddenAlex Ovechkin said. That was theme among the fewHawksCaps who were in the locker room immediately after the game: They didn’t know why what had just happened, happened. ‘’We knew what was at stake,’’ defensemanBrian CampbellMike Green said. ‘’We talked about it after the game inVancouverMontreal on the plane ride. We definitely didn’t have it.’’
TheHawksCaps reverted to their Game 1 nonsense, allowing theCanucksCandiens to jump to a quick lead and grab a nice helping of momentum.VancouverMontreal scored two goals in the first period, and the arena sounded like a tomb during quiet hours. By and large, it was over.
