One Shy – Laich’s goal was Washington’s 299th of the season, not including the ridiculous "standings" goals the league awards to teams for shootout victories. With its next goal, Washington will reach the 300 level for the ninth time in franchise history and the first time since 1992-93.
From Vogel’s Bruins game recap. I guess that sort of mitigates that historic offense-type stuff, right?

Knuble scoring his tying goal. What a great signing.

Anyone else notice that after the GWG the entire team came off the bench and went to Theo…except one guy. Flash skated down to congratulate the PP guys after the goal. Even in post-game celebrations Flash doesn’t know how to find his defensive zone.

*Boudreau rested Mike Green tonight. And he might rest other stars tomorrow. When asked point blank whether he planned on sitting other key players in Pittsburgh, he would only say that he hasn’t ruled it out.
From Tarik’s blog recap.
Buy or sell? I’m selling, unless guys like Flash, Fehr, Corvo, and Chimera count as “stars.” Ovechkin is in a scoring race, Backstrom is close to 100 points, Green just got a night off, and..well, Semin maybe could get a night off, considering he’ll no doubt meet Brooks Orpik at some point on the ice.

I hope that Green isn’t sat again. I really hope to see him get the 20 goal season. meaningless in the long run if it means being ready for the playoffs. Just would be nice to see him hit that benchmark this season.

Sell.
Backstrom isn’t going to sit, although he could probably use it, because he hasn’t missed a game in three years (left a few for a migraine, but that doesn’t count). Ovechkin has already gotten an involuntary “rest”. Might not hurt to give Semin a night off, though.
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
I think if you give anybody the night off, it’s Semin, but does that put too much pressure on Ovi?

Maybe he needs that pressure to push him just a little bit more?

Hard to say whether it does that or makes him grip his stick too tight.
Hanlon's Razor: Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.
I don’t think so. He excels in pressure situations.
"the other day on sportscenter they said something along the lines of "the capitals score so much tiger woods is jealous" haha had me laughing hard while i was eating my cereal"
Possibly. I was wondering if there were any ill effects from the penalty drawn being cross-checked into the boards. He seemed ok. However, he’s only 2 goals shy of 40 for the first time and it’s not inconceivable he could get them in 3 games left since he’s been fairly consistent lately in scoring goals (last night aside).
Could see Knuble getting a night off. Ditto Schultz, Fehr, Flash, Poti, Corvo, or Chimera…

I waiver on Knuble. Sure, it couldn’t hurt, but he’s still fresher than most of the guys because of the time he was out with the broken finger, so he’s had that period off as well as the Olympic break.

Anyone got any non-release info/skinny on Stevenson?
"I’d like to take the credit but dig mama, there’s no "I" in "revolut" …in "team."
I’ll look for more, but this from HFBoards, FWIW:
Thought I would stop in and pay a visit and give you guys a scouting report on Stevenson. I do colour for the SJHL and my team just finished a series in the playoffs against Stevenson’s Ice Wolves. The Ice Wolves won and are playing in the championship series now.
I work at a radio station and we actually got word that a Caps scout was their to watch Stevenson (my radio station got him free seats to the games).
The kid is a beast. He stands 6’5 but skates uber smooth. He has a long, smooth and effortless stride. He does an excellent job of slowing the game down. He can dominate games offensively and defensively. He has a wicked shot and makes a good strong first pass. He plays with a mean streak and throws his massive frame around alot. He was the league MVP for a reason and according to most that follow the league he was the runaway winner of the award.
The SJHL has produced some very solid talent throughout the years including Willie Mitchell and Ruslan Fedotenko. Jaden Swarchz, a projected first round pick this June, also played in the league. It is hard though to project how Stevenson will translate to the higher levels.

Look for more on Stevenson sometime today…here
The post by Renegade was great! And there wouldn’t have been much from me other than some links, but I wasn’t online anyway, but thanks for the nice words.
Here’s the link to his SJHL stats 09-10 and 08-09 led the team in points and his 07-08 stats
Stevenson named SJHL player of the year and won SJHL dman player of the week several times this season.
He had committed to attend St Lawrence, but was playing in the SJHL as a 20yo. FWIW, this reminds me of the Hauswirth USHL to pro signing.
It’s also worth noting that the Caps have drafted players that have played in the SJHL before including AGordon, Joudrey and Pokulok (all played for the Notre Dame Hounds before playing NCAA hockey.) And Caps scout Ross Mahoney is from Saskatchewan so this kid was playing in his ‘backyard’.

Time for the Ovie/Sid debate to become a Nicky/Sid debate? Would make more sense considering they play the same position and similar “playmaker” style of hockey.
I’m game. One thing I’ve admired about Crosby’s play is how strong he is when he has the puck. I’ve noticed this season how well Backs holds onto the puck no matter how much he’s being pressured. I love how Backs curls his body inward around the puck and uses his shoulder and arm to ward off would be puck thiefs.

On Backstrom’s goal. Ovi came down the left wing, engaged the Boston D-man (Wideman i think?) 1 on 1 and Charra came all the way over from the opposite side to try and run Ovi, who made a sweet pass to the wide open Backstrom just before absorbing Charra’s hit.
Just another example of how Ovi is a game changer. Even a Norris winning D-man gets off his game trying to contain him.
Because now I can justify browsing and commenting during the work day with the argument that I am promoting my business.
Absolutely, and emphasis on “absorbing Chara’s hit.” That was major contact, and in stark contrast to the play of some of AO’s teammates on the night.

Ironically enough, I saw Flash in the vicinity of the corners a couple of times

Does that include chickening out on negating a third period icing because Chara was in the vicinity?
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
if it was Matty P he’d have just ducked and gone right through Chara’s legs totally avoiding the hit
Or just absorbed it like a man.

How about Flash not touching the puck, then losing the faceoff, leading to scramble time in the D zone and a penalty for the Caps. If he mans up and touches that puck we don’t have to make that kill.

And he knew it was coming – my favorite quote from Tarik’s gamer:

The worst thing to happen to the Washington Capitals Stanley Cup hopes is drawing the Flyers in round one, which as it stands right now, they would.
If it’s Boston or Montreal (Montreal especially), they’ll breeze through that first round. Philly, unfortunately for the Caps, plays a bit of a physical game, and is suffering from the frustration of earning the awful moniker "best team that never gets it done" in the East (maybe the league – San Jose has had a couple playoff collapses, but the Flyers have been legit contenders for a decade and never got it done). It’d suck (for them) to have their dangly skill team to face a group of hungry, aggressive dudes.
This is why I’ve been beating the drum for MTL as my preferred first-round opponent. Best chance of coming out healthy and ready to play the next three rounds of the playoffs. Let the Flyers (or Bruins) pound on the two and three seeds. I’ll take my chances with MTL’s PP and total lack of forecheck or physicality.
As for the whole dangly-skill-team thing, the Caps are a lot grittier than they were last season, so I have some hope for that. They are going to need total buy-in along the boards from everyone, though, so I hope some of the less physical members of our team pick that up and run with it when the games start counting.

MTL’s PP is second in the league overall, and PHI is third. Seeing as MTL’s PP is 28% on the road, and we’ll be playing more games at home, I’d rather have Philadelphia (they’re converting at 21.4 on the road)

Philadelphia is physical, but they are playing like a team that just wants summer to be here soon so they can see what changes are made to the organ-eye-zation. The Caps would sweep them, or it would go to 5 games at the most.
I got that exact feeling from Boston last night, don’t really care about making the playoffs, just want to get this season over with.
As for Philly being too physical for us and costing us in later rounds, count me as one of those who thought that would happen to the Penguin Scum last year.

Hobson’s Choice as far as I’m concerned. Nothing is going to be ideal in the postseason, so probably the Caps’ best bet is to ride into the playoffs on the steamroller (or a Sherman tank) and let the bottom of the East sort out however it’s going to.

MTL may not be as rough, but they do have skill, a loud arena, good goaltending, and a knack for playing the Caps close. I want no part of them in the first round. Would rather bang it out against Boston.
I think Philly, with their goaltending (or lack thereof), is the series that would likely be the shortest.

The whiny diver stuff doesn’t really bother me, but the idea that Pittsburgh is a gray, rotting town always irks me a bit. It’s just such an outdated stereotype.
And, may I add, the last thing I want to see is the Caps eliminate the Pens in the last Igloo game. But I guess it would be Karma coming back around, seeing how the Caps have been treated in that building in the playoffs.
Its not having photoshops or anything that makes it funny, but actual good writing.

sigh as great as the Wire is, and as well as that portrays the general political shortcomings in Baltimore as well as the crime ridden areas, there are TONS of neighborhoods that are great places to live, have tons of money and just a generally awesome place to hang out.
That being said, if you go 10 blocks in the wrong direction from most of the nice (i.e. close to the water) neighborhoods it gets a little rough.

It’s hard to believe that not all that long ago Sid with a beer —> arrested (under drinking age). Not that anybody in Pittsburgh would rat him out…and I found in Pensburgh’s preview that Jordan Staal is still the youngest Penguin.

Didn’t I see someone in the post-game thread ask why you’d waste a non-emergency call up on that? Love the mind games, though, as long as he lets Theo and Varly in on the joke.

True there, but you know, it sure looked like Theo had a very slight upper body injury incurred during the OT goal celebration. He’s day to day. ;-)
Actually, it’d be a nice reward for Holtby to get a shot at an NHL game. He’s done everything the Caps, Bears and Stingrays have asked and done them all very well. He’s earned a shot. Here’s hoping he gets one before the season ends.

I heard that. Why would you do that to Holtby? Talk about a pressure situation? Varly is one thing – Bruce didn’t have a lot of options on that one given the goalie situation at the time. But he’s got lots of options now, so is throwing Holtby into the fire in his debut a good idea?
Hanlon's Razor: Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.
I agree. If you want to get Holtby an NHL start for the Hades of it before the season ends, Friday night at home against Atlanta would be the best time to do it because Atlanta could very well be done by then.
Tonight in Pittsburgh is just stupid and yet another signal to the players that the game doesn’t matter.

In fairness to Ted, his whole quote was, “I mean, right now if you think about it – I hope this doesn’t come off the [wrong] way – we have five exhibition games before the playoffs start, right?”
Probably should’ve gone with “these games might not mean anything in the standings, but they do mean something to our team…” etc., but he was a little reluctant to put it as bluntly as it came out.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
It’s not that. It’s the last game in Mellon Arena, against a team that the Pens love to hate. And that team is sticking a rookie in goal in his debut – that poor goalie. What does that do to his confidence? As you said, if you want to get Holtby a start, I’d choose Atlanta on Friday. I just think that doing that to Holtby isn’t necessary.
Hanlon's Razor: Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.

JP so I gotta ask since this is my first season fartin around here..
Do you guys do any bracket challenges once all the playoff spots are set in stone?
“Bracket challenges” don’t really work for hockey because, strictly speaking, it’s not actually a bracket. The reason why it works so well for March Madness is that all the matchups are predetermined save for who actually will win the game. That’s not true for the NHL due to reseeding.

Ok so I guess this is on topic since it’s related to the Penguins, but I was poking around nhl.com and came across the 2003 draft order.
in 2003.. Pittsburg had first pick and took Marc-Andre Fleury.
2nd pick after him was Eric Staal by Carolina.
(followed by Horton, Zherdev, Vanek…. Phaneuf, carter, parise, getzlaf, mike richards were also in that round)
So… if you’re Pittsburg.. and you could do it over again? Would you still take Fleury? His career sv% is .907 and playoff % is 9.16
Sure. He’s won a Cup, gotten to two SCF’s, and has a lot of years in front of him. Plus he’s been a good fit in Pittsburgh (i.e., not a head case/prima donna).
by cuqui on Apr 6, 2010 9:42 AM EDT up reply actions 1 recs
Yeah, I can buy off on that. He’s a legit NHL starter at the most important position in the game, and he’s relatively cheap for a starting G. Ideally you’d like to get a dominant player at th #1 overall spot, and MAF is only occasionally dominant, but it has worked out well enough for them.
"You want to start being part of the Rink? Fine, but more’s expected of you than John/Jane Cap Fan. He’s not even close to his peak either. I say he gets much better as far as his consistency goes over the next 5 years.
I’ll disagree on the head case part though. He’s shown a lot of mental frailness, especially earlier in his career.
I look to the future because that's where I'm going to spend the rest of my life.

"I’d like to take the credit but dig mama, there’s no "I" in "revolut" …in "team."

That was the year we got Fehr 1st round (18 overall)
Fehr was drafted higher than Getzlaf, Kessler, .. just UNDER Parise.
All the love in the world for Fehr.. but hey NJ.. want a do-over?
Wow, good on the Canadian teams for their late round picks (Halak and Elliot picked in the 9th round)
"I’d like to take the credit but dig mama, there’s no "I" in "revolut" …in "team."
I’d pick fehr again, even though he has had all these injuries and better players were drafted behind him, when we needed him to step up and get to that next level, this was definatly the year to do it. He hasn’t cost the team any money to retain over the last 7 years. Most likely he still won’t cost the team much to retain.
He also had the game winning goal to win the calder cup in hershey.
Salary cap aside, I’d take Getzlaf over Fehr. Every single time.

See, i don’t think it would have affected our chances of getting backstrom considering getzalf didn’t play a full season till the 2006-2007 season. The question is though would we have chosen backstrom if we thought highly of getzlaf and would we have picked kessel instead? Now Alzner is a different story… No way do we finish that badly that season with getzlaf and OV both playing together.
Getzlaf would have been a regular on the Caps sooner than ANA.

No doubt…At the end of the day he was still the goalie that won them a Stanley cup. Even if you can say they had a statistically better goalie there is no guarantee that, that goalie plays lights out like flower did in the playoffs to win them a cup.
Also, take away his first two NHL seasons, and his numbers look much, much better. He came in straight from juniors, played on an atrocious couple of teams, and hadn’t yet learned how to play the puck (he’s still not good, but those first few years — shudder).
I mean, Jimmy Howard has proven that he’s a very good goalie this year, but he’s played all of 69 NHL games. You can’t really compare him and Fleury.
There was a time early on when it felt like the Pens might break Fleury – bringing a young kid into a bad team like that is a recipe for disaster for a goalie, and it almost certainly delayed his development. He was a mental case for a few years there.
I still don’t consider him an “elite” goalie, Cup or no Cup, but he’s a good fit for that team both on and off the ice.
Elite? Nah. He’ll never win a Vezina and I don’t think he’ll ever even be in the conversation of being the best, but you have to say this for him: in the past two playoffs, he’s only been pulled once (that beating they took in Game 5 last year). That tells me that in the playoffs, he’s not giving up the easy goals.
Even when Ovechkin was torching him last year, it’s not like you sat there and said, “Man, he should’ve had that one.” You were saying, “What an amazing shot!”
Honestly, how many goalies are “elite”? He’s a solid starter, and for most teams (contenders), that’s all you need.

Yup.
Hell, if either Theo gets hot and help the Caps win the Cup, nobody (in their right mind) is going to call him elite.
But his hair, that’s an entirely separate story.

I call BS on Fleury being lights out in the playoffs. He made some big saves (like any goalie has to in the playoffs), but he was largely carried to the Cup by his team rather than the other way around.
If Fleury was lights out in the playoffs the Caps would have lost to the Pens in 5 games, tops. His mediocrity and Varlamov’s play are the next biggest reasons behind Ovechkin why that series even got to 7 games.

by Killer_Carlson on Apr 6, 2010 1:18 PM EDT up reply actions
Fleury was average to above average against the Caps, and that was his weakest round.
He was awesome against Philly and made 48 of 50 stops in Game’s 6 and 7 against Detroit.
When Fleury is “on” he’s one of the best. But the Caps always seem to have his number.

Like I said, he had his moments. It’s almost impossible to win the Cup if your goalie doesn’t have games where they step up their play occasionally. But on the whole it wasn’t a special playoff performance and I think he was down on the list of reasons why the Pens won the Cup.

I’d say even lower. Crosby and Malkin bringing their A games (count that as 1 if you want since they usually weren’t hot at the same time), guys like Scuderi and Gill playing way above their heads on D, and Bylsma getting the team to play such a tight defensive system with an aggressive forecheck that knocked teams like Detroit and Washington off their games would be the top 3 reasons for me. Timely scoring from role players like Talbot and Fleury come next.

It depends. If they don’t have the foresight of being able to get both Crosby and Malkin, I think they should pull the trigger on Getzlaf or Parise. Or, if they draft because a player is good and not for fit, then I think it’s the same. But if they have that foresight and draft to a position of need (for fit), they go with Fleury.

Maybe getting him on the ice for a few regular season game in anticipation of the return of Juice?
I am a hockey fan first, and a Caps fan second.
Boudreau said this (cough, cough); wonder how knicked up someone really is. Hell, we already had a healthy scratch last night.
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
Or perhaps it was a “healthy scratch.”
by DrinkingPartner on Apr 6, 2010 10:18 AM EDT up reply actions
It was a little “iffy”. Green was on the post-game show on the radio, and he did say that he could use the rest and that he and Bruce “agreed” to the scratch. I wondered aloud if he was covering for an injury.
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
… and Ken Campbell blames the Olympics (more or less). [The Hockey News]
Is a league-wide decrease from 5.50 goals per game to 5.17 goals per game, a difference of only .33, over the span of a month really a cause for concern? From a historical perspective, the NHL has seen a decline in goals per game in recent years, yet the league still manages to gain popularity. I find it hard to believe that a decline in goal scoring over a short period of time from the handful of stars that Campbell mentions is enough to negate all the positive publicity gained from one of the best Olympic tournaments in recent memory.
Campbell cites Ovechkin, Crosby, and Marleau as examples of decreased scoring over the months of March and April. Goals scored by these players in March/April over the past three seasons are as follows: Ovechkin scored 17, 11, and 4 goals respectively, Crosby scored 4, 8, and 5, while Marleau scored 8, 4, and 5. Ovechkin is the only one who suffered a significant decline. Not much there to build a trend out of.
And then there this dubious logic:
Certainly part of the reasoning would be that teams have tightened up defensively for the stretch run and in anticipation of the playoffs. It also hasn’t helped Ovechkin’s cause that he has missed 10 games this season. But you also can’t ignore the possibility that some of the league’s star players are beginning to wear down because of the extra two weeks of hockey.
Which is exactly what is making the NHL so reticent about continuing its Olympic involvement…
He concedes a perfectly logical explanation for the decline in goal scoring, yet asserts that the “possibility” of star players wearing down is “exactly” what is causing the NHL to question their Olympic involvement. He is basing that assertion on something he did not even prove; as if goal scoring is the sole indicator of a player’s vitality. Campbell should have expounded on the financial aspect of the Olympic games and not tried to shoehorn goal scoring into the argument.

That’s a six percent drop in production. If it was a financial index, folks would be concerned.
If you've read this far...seek help.
But the three players he mentions increased well over 6% drops in goal scoring rates (if my mental math estimates are anywhere within the ballpark rink), meaning that others are scoring more. No doubt there are other big-name Olympians who are playing well.

Right, he cherrypicks Ovechkin (role reversal!) as one example. Maybe Ovechkin does have an Olympics hangover. Maybe he is banged up. Maybe he is mentally fatigued. Maybe he is just naturally slumping. Regardless of the reason for his slump, it is by no means evidence that the entire NHL should not participate in the Olympics.

Personally, I think the suspension has really messed with his mind. His game has always been about aggression and brute strength and the threat of another bad hit/suspension seems to have him playing with more caution. Maybe it’s just my overly critical eyes, but it seems when he’s in a 50/50 postion of hitting a guy the wrong way, he’s backing off now and I think it’s taken away some of his edge. Last night, he seemed to be closer to the pre-suspension Ovechkin so a breakout could be on the way.
I agree with that completely. Honestly, I think that the suspensions have deflated him and removed some enjoyment out of the game for him.
"the other day on sportscenter they said something along the lines of "the capitals score so much tiger woods is jealous" haha had me laughing hard while i was eating my cereal"
Last night, he seemed to be closer to the pre-suspension Ovechkin so a breakout could be on the way.

I definitely think it’s mostly the suspension, not the Olympics. He came out hard in that Chicago game and then….! Since then to my eyes he’s been overly careful with his hits. Last night I thought he looked more like his old self. The top line was regaining their chemistry, and Ovi seemed to vary his shots more. And he had some good hits. I don’t want him careening around the ice—though he’s very dangerous when he’s unpredictable—but Ovi plays best when he’s physical. The postgame interviews by both BB and Ovi seemed to suggest that it was the suspension as well. I love how our superstar is so coachable. I liked how frank he was about talking with BB about breaking out of the slump, what was he not doing in his game. And I liked how BB told him to just play his game, that he wasn’t a dirty player and that he should just go out there and hit as usual.
by capsyoungguns on Apr 6, 2010 11:09 AM EDT up reply actions
I’m with those who say the suspension is the greater cause. Ovie was coming out of his Olympic slump when the suspension threw him for another loop. After the first time he was suspended I felt it took him a couple weeks to get comfortable and be himself again.

Those people, in my opinion, are combating that “Caps fans are sensitive” meme a little too hardcore. Bloggers have bias, and almost all of them make it well known, explicitly (“I hate Team X”) or not (repeated shots at Team X). Considering Lambert’s consistent anti-Caps comments, I think it’s perfectly reasonable to say he’s got something against them.
That said, that’s not the reason I think he’s terrible. His “insight” and comments on the game are generally misinformed and just terribly argued, if at all.

Toews and Keith and a 1st—fair for Ovechkin?
Define “fair?”
Salary cap fair?…Chicago would save money (Toews and Keith are an $11.5 million cap hit to Ovechkin’s $9.5)
Production fair?…Per-82 games (career) Ovechkin is 55-54-109, +13. Toews/Keith combined are 39-70-109, +31.
Looks pretty equal, until you realize that Toews and Keith are combining for what Ovechkin does alone (and Ovechkin is cheaper). You could add a player (not at the high end) and get more.
At this point in his career, Ovechkin is one of maybe half a dozen untradable players in the league, not for his compensation, but for his production. You can’t duplicate it with any collection of players you might trade for unless you: a) busted the Caps’ salary cap (the collection being more expensive than Ovechkin), or b) gutted your own team in what it would take to bring him aboard.
He isn’t at (and isn’t close to) the “Gretzky” stage of his career, and the Caps aren’t in the financial situation Peter Pocklington was when Gretzky was moved.
If you've read this far...seek help.

maybe half a dozen untradable players
This is an interesting point. I’d say that there are more than that. It all depends on how much that particular player means to their team. I would not count players like Nik Khabibulin, because he’s untradeable for totally different reasons than AO or Sid.
So, who are the league’s ‘untouchables’? Is there one per team? Less? More?

Doubt it? Just for the fact that I can’t see Philly helping out anyone in the East. I imagine they will make every effort to trade with a Western team. Their problem is that young, cheap and good goalies are water in a desert environment; no one gets rid of it, even if they don’t particularly need it right now.
So they’re going to have trade one of their expensive but good young(ish) skaters for picks/prospects and sign a FA goalie. Or so I predict, anyway.
It’s a horrible result for them.

If they’re willing to give up Carter, it’s not gonna be for Neuvirth. Assuming that story is true, it’s basically a “go away” offer/counter from the Caps. The Flyers could get Vokoun for Carter and dump salary elsewhere – I doubt Neuvy’s contract alone is enough to make them do anything that stupid.
I can’t remember the specifics exactly, but aren’t they going to have to get rid of either a top pair D or a second line forward?

Or third line forward, I think (like Kris Versteeg or Patrick Sharp)

I think they put a lot of guys on the table and take the best offers. They’ll try to move Buff and Bolland as well. Campbell if anyone will take him. I think Keith, Toews, and Kane are the only guys off limits.
A pretty girl is like a violent crime.
Dustin Byghsligin (I believe that’s how you spell it) is a beast out there, and as he gets a little older and gets some more NHL experience, he will be a 35-40 goal scorer.
His issue is conditioning and effort. When he wants to he dominates but he has games where he doesn’t really seem to care.
A pretty girl is like a violent crime.
That’s true, but that might be something that comes with age.
Also, he was a defenseman up until 3 seasons ago, so he’s still working on being a forward.
Hawks have put him back on D recently, last time I checked.

Which I don’t get.
For the past 3 years, he’s been a forward and that’s where he’s going to be for the rest of his career. Why mess with that?
He’s 6’4", 247! That is a true power forward.
And I don’t think he’s mobile enough to be a valuable NHL D. Keep him in front of the net and let him bang home loose pucks.

He plays the point on one of their PPs. Or he did in December (our last game against CHI)

Definitely less. I’d say there are only 2 untradeables. Any one else can be traded and bring back near fair value without killing a salary cap or gutting a roster.
A pretty girl is like a violent crime.
Disagree. Ryan Suter, to name an example, is worth more to the Predators than most returns he would fetch, making him untradeable in the sense that Poile would never do it.

Would never do it isn’t the same thing. There are plenty of guys that the GM wouldn’t trade. But NSH could get fair value for Suter without it being a ridiculous trade. Kopitar for Suter is just an example, I don’t think it would happen but you look at that and say both teams got a great player, neither was ripped off, nobody’s cap goes to hell, nobody ruins their future. LAK wouldn’t trade Kopitar, but he’s not untradeable. Same with NSH and Suter.
A pretty girl is like a violent crime.
Eh, maybe. In your example, I don’t even know if I’d trade Suter for Kopitar. I probably would. Maybe.

Considering your organization you should take it in a second. You have help on the blueline, and Weber is already there. You don’t have anyone (sorry Colin Wilson) that is in Kopitar’s class up front.
A pretty girl is like a violent crime.
Probably agree upon reflection. I think Suter and Weber are the best out of all the D in our system, but Kopitar is just outside of that elite C class we were talking about earlier and we have Jon Blum to slot in there. The jump in overall depth with Kopitar would offset the loss of Suter.
Wilson’s not there, obviously; but he has been freaking awesome since March 1. Probably our best deadline “acquisition”.

Yeah, I thought he was a little taller than that. I’m still not all that concerned but he’s your guy. He may end up being a PP specialist type guy if he can’t handle the physical play, but I still think this is a skating man’s game and there are few that can skate like Ellis.
A pretty girl is like a violent crime.
I think he’ll stick because our PP is consistently awful. Weber/Ellis and Suter/Franson power plays would be pretty awesome.
I would imagine that we see Blum paired with Franson and Ellis with Klein down the road to compensate for any deficiencies in his own zone.

Toews plays a different game than Ovechkin — he’s a very good two-way player, is a center, and is 3 years younger. He is nowhere near the player, but if you’d add Keith — a two-way defenseman that the Capitals haven’t had since… jeez, their defensive heyday of the early 90s — it would be interesting.
Keith and Green patrolling the same blueline would be so amazing they’d win the Olympic gold in regulation several Cups.

They’re going to accept their inevitable series loss by beating on us and cheap shotting us as much as humanly possible.
Pronger? no thanks.
"By far the worst performers on the team are in the front office." – Sally Jenkins
I would love to play Philly; frankly, no one in the East scares me except the Pens, and that is mainly Pavlovian conditioning, I think.
Philly is the most screwed up organization in the Conference. All that talent, squandered.
The challenge that Philly presents is that they have a bunch of skill in the lineup, and could presumably exploit the Caps defensive breakdowns. The way they played the Wings on Sunday, if they repeat that in the playoffs, they’re not going to be an easy out.

Quite honestly and in my humble opinion, if they play the Caps like they did Detroit, the Caps will sweep. Washington has more skill and more scoring depth than Detroit: they’ll get that GTG and GWG. Now, if you take just the first couple of periods by Philly, then yeah, that’s scary.

Caps should practice their PK since the Pens will likely have the advantage in that department yet again
#NeedsMoreBradley
Here’s the thing — when the Pens played the Caps in the playoffs last year, the Pens were forechecking like mad, putting the pressure on all the time, and the Caps were getting a ton of holding/hooking/interference calls. The Caps were outshot every game! Other than the top line and Fedorov, that team was invisible and couldn’t keep up.
This is a new year and the Caps have a much better team, but Varlamov carried this team through the first 6 games of the series — and the penalties reflected the Caps’ play.
You’re right about last playoffs, but the Pens have had more PPs in 14 straight games against the Caps. That’s ridiculous, especially given the Caps won the regular season series this year and last year; it hasn’t been 14 straight games of Pens territorial domination.
A pretty girl is like a violent crime.
I thought it was 14 games of equal or more for the Pens? In other words, 14 games without the Caps having the PP advantage. Whatever, that’s ridiculous.

-I don’t know what to think of Ottawa, but I don’t think they’d put a huge scare into a contender.
-Philly has Brian Boucher, enough said.

Montreal I think COULD pose the toughest problems, if Halak’s in the zone he’s the best non-contender goalie in the East (IMO), they have a great defensemen in Markov and a good forecheck.
I care about the #2 seed, but I don’t think it’s the end of the world. I think the Pens are going to have to play NJ and Wash anyways if they win the East, so what’s the difference.

Answering my own question, it hasn’t been that long since the top 4 seeds advanced: 2006, in fact.

I dunno, if I had a nickle for every time VS talked about Ovechkin and Crosby “renewing their epic rivalry” last night….

who high sticked Chara? Or whether a Caps player did at all?
Because during the replay’s they should outside shots of the scrum, and laich was battling with chara in the corners, then semin was hovering between Rask and Chara. Then the camera angle cut to an inside look from outside the glass, then you saw a stick come from the direction that semin was in during the previous shot, then the big man goes down.
Thats what I recall from last night, at least.

It’s a delicate reference to the fact that Chara’s schnoz is, um, a little beaky to begin with.
It was definitely Semin, and he definitely clobbered him with the stick. We’ve seen him get a high stick on that exact same play several times this year. He goes for the stick lift, the opponent moves the stick, and it clips him in the face. Should have been called, but wasn’t.

The Caps are 29-2-3 when the opponent fails to score a PPG.
Could the key to the Caps’ post-season success be any more clear?

Just so we don't feel so down on ourselves...
Pens have trouble with the trap as well.
A pretty girl is like a violent crime.
Anyone worried about how Steckel has performed on the dot of late? He’s had some uncharacteristically bad games of late. Is it luck? Taking the foot off the gas? Nagging injury?
A pretty girl is like a violent crime.
I don’t know what his problem has been, but he has been horrible on the dot. I’ve noticed it over at least the last 3 games, possibly longer.

Something I noticed up in Hershey...
Perreault is playing with his thumb taped up… I was looking for a photo – I have one or two that show it – but I don’t have them here at work. That could be a contributing factor in why he’s not up here, although it isn’t bad enough to keep him off the ice in Hershey.

Could just be support, too. Doesn’t have to be an injury.

That’s true, which is why I wanted to post the photo.

Report from Hershey by Leone in his practice update today is that Perreault is not playing for Hershey tonight due to a lower body injury and the one game trip. And his play on Sunday didn’t make it look like he was having any difficulty with his stickwork and passing.
Why are you looking for a reason that Perreault is not up right now?
I’m not. We were discussing injuries.

Sorry, didn’t realize that was the intent. FWIW, as I noted, it is being reported by Leone that Perreault has a minor lower body injury that would not keep him out of a playoff game.
…let’s hope it doesn’t keep him out of a weekend game, either.
My ability to post is only surpassed by my ability to pinch pennies.
IMO, it doesn’t matter if he plays this weekend as long as he’s ready next Wed. when the playoff games start and from the report today, it sounds like he will be.
It matters to me! I’m paying to see his little ass!

Awkward.

"What do you think this is? Major League Baseball?"- Shea Weber
Nope, not awkward for me since it’s not like I haven’t paid for a game before and a player I had hoped to see didn’t play. Such is the life of buying tickets and/or planning a roadtrip in advance.
As a fan of the player and the team, I still prefer they do what’s best to make sure he’s as close to 100% as possible when the playoffs start next Wed. night.
And safe travels to Norfolk this weekend.
Who is an ESPN Insider?
Certainly, there is no magic statistic to help. Since the lockout, a team hasn’t had to score the most or allow the fewest goals to hoist the Stanley Cup, nor has it needed to field the top power play or penalty kill. Just look at last season: The Penguins finished the regular season 17th in goals against, 20th in power play efficiency, 18th in shots, 18th in shots against and tied for 19th in faceoff percentage — and none of that stopped them from winning it all. That should tell this year’s Capitals something. Specifically, don’t rest on the laurels of your numerically dominant season. No stat foretells a title.
If anything, the team in DC should be a bit concerned. Coaches and execs focus on the composition of a team’s roster when they sit down to forecast Cup chances, and what they look for doesn’t coincide with the Caps’ many strengths. As the experts see it, the road to the Cup runs straight through the center of the ice. “If you want to win it all, you’d better be strong down the middle,” says Hurricanes president and GM Jim Rutherford, architect of the ’06 Cup holders. “That means good goaltending, strong centers and a couple of defensemen who can move the puck.”

Everyone knows that a team with Eric Staal and Rod Brind’Amour means you’re strong down the middle.

They had Matt Cullen too, right? And back in the day of Staal’s 100 point season, when Brind’Amour was still good offensively?

– and sweep the Pens for the first time in franchise history.
Ironically though, if Pittsburgh wins they can kind of claim to split the season series, because from this perspective we took 4 out of the 8 possible points. Crazy how the loser points throws things around.

hey hey hey, they’re not loser points, they’re half wins!
