Just want to say that JP’s tweet is dead on, and exactly what I was thinking last night.

Dear Caps – Feel free to continue to mirror the Pens’ first round series.

"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."

I’d rather they not slip into a three goal deficit, again. But the final result, yes.

Well, there is that. Stake ’em early is my thought.

And I’d rather my heart not have to deal with OT. 5-2 would be fine, thanks.

by bilspacecadet on Apr 25, 2010 10:33 AM EDT up reply actions

If anything, the Caps series is a lot like the Sharks’ series. Okay, the games were not won and lost in the same order but here are some similarities:

1) OT games

2) Sharks had more shots on goals in the games, including the losses.

3) Sharks had trouble solving the Avs goal tender, Anderson, like we had trouble solving Halak.

And put up 3 in about half the game in Game 3. He was pretty stout in Game 1, but our lack of goal scoring Friday night was more on us I felt than on his play.

by Davethecapsfan on Apr 25, 2010 5:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Games 1 and 5 had more with the Caps not playing well against the Habs then not being able to solve Halak.

And your original point was solving Halak— not how well the Caps played against him.

This may seem nit-picky but I just think it’s silly to use anything as an excuse since the real issue is the Capitals not playing anything close to their best hockey when they lost.

I look to the future because that's where I'm going to spend the rest of my life.

by zephyr on Apr 25, 2010 6:05 PM EDT up reply actions

I will admit the Caps have played less than stellar in Game 1 & 5 of this series. (I had temporarily forgotten than Halak had started Game 3 and was pulled. For some reason, I was thinking they had started Price, who didn’t do well at all.)

I got confused with the Toronto Sun link about Mike Green. That was the only sentence about him in the article. In fairness to Mike Green, I looked up his playoff stats with the Bears. The year they won the Calder Cup he had 3 Goals and 15 Assists (18 Points) in 21 Games. Not too bad I’d say.
For fun, I calculated how many goals and assists he would have had at that rate over the amount games he played in the regular season. The result? 8/40/48. His regular season numbers: 9/34/43. No drop off or “lousy playoffs” there. He did a little bit better points wise the next year in the playoffs too.

And in reference to the Four Habs Fan article I have two things to say:
1. Haters gonna hate
2. About the point of no one coming to Caps games in the past – thanks for your baseball team Montreal!

I saw that. I read all 10, and then the comments. Dale Hunter was a dirty hitter, a jerk, and probably a terrible roommate who stole Calle Johansson’s pants all of the time.

He also fought extremely hard for every inch, every puck possession, every pass, every shot, every goal, and for each and every one of his teammates, all because he wanted to win more than anyone else on the ice. You can guess which side of him I choose to support.

I’m a long-time Caps fan (evidence would be my Guy Charron autographed photo), and a huge fan of Dale Hunter. I’m old enough to remember the Hunter hit on Turgeon very clearly. I just watched again on You Tube. Honestly, it was so far beyond acceptable and not even close to anything OV has ever done. Turgeon skates in alone, scores and slows down as he goes towards the boards, arms in the air. Then Hunter comes up from the blind side and throws in a cheap shot.

I don’t think we need to defend Hunter on this. I don’t think we can.

It would be interesting to jump in the way back machine and see what the Caps fans were saying at that time in Hunter’s defense, if we were saying anything at all. I know I wasn’t. There doesn’t seem to be any gray area at all.

Of course. It was a terrible play. But there isn’t a single team in the league that doesn’t have something like that in their history. Including Montreal. When people want to talk about dirty Caps I point them in Dale’s direction, and I’ll always have a fierce loyalty to the man. He was dirty, sure, but he was also all guts and did everything he could for the Caps. He’s not alone in being dirty for his team, he just happened to be one of the best.

There might be a lot of truth to the article, but you have to admit it’s really worth a laugh. Any of us on this board could write something like that. Here are a few things they didn’t include:

1. Rod Langway’s chest hair poking up from under his jersey. What’s with that. Get an undershirt, will you?
2. They can’t even get the President to walk 8 blocks or so to see them.
3. Teeth. Starting with OV and now to Belanger. God dammit, get those bridges and dentures in and look like normal people.
4. Colors. Last time I checked, the Habs were the bleu, blanc et rouge. Who said the Caps could have those colors?
5. Yvon Labre’s retired jersey. Who the fuck was he? The retired #7 for a guy who didn’t play past age 31, had career points total of 101, and was a -94 for his career?

In case you are wondering – this is all snark. All snark. No worries. Just wanted to agree with Mage — enjoy the chuckle of the article (thanks JP).

Yeah, DelCo was quite ridiculous. Dripping in irony. He hasn’t seen much of Green besides highlights and one bad playoff series, it seems like. And then he leaves off the 4th highest scoring player (points wise) in the NHL from his all-star team, doesn’t even give a vote to Green for Norris or for all-star team, and so on.

After the Washington Capitals blew a chance to eliminate the ready-for-golf Montreal Canadiens Friday night, Boudreau was asked how he felt about Semin’s game.

"Did he have a goal or an assist?" asked Boudreau. Told that Semin didn’t, Boudreau said in withering tones, "Well?"

The subtext is that if Semin isn’t scoring, he isn’t doing much else to help you.

Way to be tactful. Semin can’t play center. Period. He’s doesn’t have the two-way mentality that is needed from a center – best example on our team are Nickey, Gordo and Steckel.

If BB doesn’t want BMo or Belanger on that line, then he would have to go with Laich, right?

Certainly, no one had a line of Semin-Laich-Laing in their pool, but it may be better than having 14 on the ice.

Until the morning’s twitter, I had assumed that either B Mo or Belanger would center the 2nd line.

Laich/Flash/Sasha are good players but none of them are good centers. While Laich and Flash are listed as centers, both are more suited to be wingers.

Somehow, I can’t imagine Laing playing on the 2nd line for the Caps. Period.

Shultz/Green....time to go "on a break?"

From Peerless:

Mr. Plus 50 and Mr. Plus 39 each have been on the ice for eight goals against of the 16 total scored by Montreal.
And speaking of Schultz, he has six career playoff games and is a minus player in four of them.

Collar bones don’t really take a long time to heal. I snapped mine in half and was only out for just over 4 weeks. Of course, now it’s lumpier than it used to be.

I know I’m not a doctor so my opinion isn’t worth much.

My uncle is who I’m mainly referencing. He has broken each collar bone enough times that they’re not connected anymore. There are just nubs of bone and it’s kind of gross. Doctors told him that it would be considered cosmetic surgery to get them repaired because they’re not necessary anymore.

But again, I don’t really know, and it’s possible my uncle was exaggerating.

I’m hoping some others will pop in and give their opinions. My experience as a gymnastics coach was that doctors are hesitant to release kids back to activity because one fall could cause a re-fracture if it’s not fully healed.

Maybe it’s more important when you’re young and growing, and I suppose it’s probably easier to re-break in gymnastics than in non-contact hockey.

He races motorcycles, and for a very long time, he wasn’t very good at it. I probably never saw him without at least a soft cast until I was 15. At one event, he crashed in his first race. He raced in his next 3 and went to the hospital afterward. He had broken four ribs and his wrist in the first crash.

I would agree with this. However, I think they need him to be hot to advance to subsequent rounds. The Caps absolutely need Ovie for this as well (and that’s more apparent this year than before), but I think the Caps the slight edge on additional weapons. I honestly haven’t seen enough Pens games with Crosby out of the lineup, and it doesn’t happen all that often to begin with, but when Ovie’s out the Caps seem to play with an extra level of fire in their gut, which seems to balance out his absence adequately in such stretches.

I doubt that. Take away all AO’s goals, what, still #1 offense? Much stronger case there.

Pens I don’t doubt make the playoffs without Crosby. Remember 2008? Malkin has underperformed this season.

IIRC Scuderi and Gill were whipping boys until they shut down AO (to the tune of 8 goals and 6 assists) and played pretty well thereafter. They added Goligoski, kinda, and Leopold and McKee—not much of a downgrade on the whole. Improved Orpik and Letang, slightly regressed Gonchar, and so on.

They put Satan in the minors I believe for the playoffs.

Honestly claiming anyone’s team would still make the playoffs without them shouldn’t ruin their argument for the Hart…Ovechkin or Crosby. There’s a big difference between making the playoffs as 1st round fodder and being a legitimate Cup contender. People can roll out all the stats they want about who the rest of the team is etc…but the intangibles of having those superstars on the ice for those teams and even when they’re not on the ice completely changes the game plan opposing teams will throw at them.

The problem comes in measuring how much extra value the superstar adds when they do have such good teams around them as well. It’s much easier to look at a goalie carrying a team or get mystified by a played like Sedin suddenly winning the Art Ross even though his team finished in the exact same position as last year.

But there’s a great story from the SB Nation sidebar, about Max Afinogenov skating at a pickup game in AL (yes, that would be Alabama). Evidently, he was just looking for some hockey to play before the Russian Team starts practicing. Here’s a snipit:

“Of the 29 goals, Maxim scored 17, including the last three after it was tied, 13-13,” Cheeseman said. “And he didn’t come off the ice in either the second or third periods. He told us he was looking for conditioning. And besides, who was going to tell him to come off?”

One of the reasons the Flyers beat Washington in the 2008 playoffs and Pittsburgh did the same to the Caps last season was because they forced Green to make quick decisions in his own end, many of which were bad choices.

That’s true for PIT, but not PHI. Green was a beast that series and the Flyers said their number one priority was shutting him down. On a team with AO, Green was the number one priority. Pull your head out of your ass.

You’re never going to get a totally unbiased look at a D man’s regular season. Truthfully if someone asked me right now who I would pick as my 1st D man to be the future of my team, I’d say Doughty.

Then again…if you told me I was picking for one series only, the SCF, I’d take Lidstrom.

The exact same result you see with Crosby. He disappears for basically all of the knockout round but gets a great pass from Iginla and just fires it on net. It goes in, he’s the Golden Boy. Because of this, no one remembers the semi breakaway he flubbed late in the game that would have made it 3-1 and most likely out of reach for the US to even force OT.

Actually — I don’t much disagree with that, as it was clearly down to a handful for the final spot, and Green may not be as good.

I do think, however, that, had Stevie Y. just said “Green is a great D., but I just felt like others give us a better chance to win,” and didn’t say anything about 52’s D coverage – then the spotlight would be less.

No suspension for Hossa: “This play is distinguishable from recent incidents by a number of factors.”

Yeah, it’s worse.

The main one being it’s the Playoffs.

You don’t think he gets at least a game if this were earlier in the year?

by Yoshietree on Apr 25, 2010 6:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Maybe, but definitely not in a playoff series.

Why, pray tell, does the postseason have bearing on it? Honest question, not being an ass.

One playoff game is much more important than a regular season game. You can suspend in the regular season just to set the line and send messages, but to take a guy out of a playoff game you better be damn sure they deserve it. Generally I only want to see playoff suspensions for malicious hits but given how this season has played out and the circumstances of the AO suspension I have a hard time seeing Hossa get zero. The NHL’s disciplinary system is a mess and basically no matter what happened here would look bad. If the on ice refs had at least gotten it right and booted him it would be a lot more palatable.

Exactly. At this point I’m entirely more pissed that after researching, Hossa wasn’t ejected.

I fully agree. The failure of the wheel to dish out a suspension here is horrible.

I’m shocked he only got a 5 minute major. And not any game misconduct of any sort. Doesn’t getting a 5 minute major merit a game misconduct, assuming it’s not your typical fight.

Every time Ovi and Shaone Morrisonn would get 5 minute majors, they always got a game misconduct along with it.

I’m under the impression that, yes, that 5 minute plus Hammy’s injury should have resulted in the gamer. The refs completely blew that one.

According to rule 42.5, if Hamhuis is injured and Hossa is assessed a gamer, he MUST be tossed. FAIL.

It’s a judgment call by the referees at the time whether he is injured. That’s all.

I looked at the video several times, and Hamhuis looks ok when he skates off.

please, someone enlighten me as to how it is “distinguishable from recent incidents by a number of factors” besides the fact that when Campbell spun the Wheel O’ Justice in March, it landed on “Suspend him.” Oh, right, they didn’t even bother to spin the wheel this time…

Hossa doesn’t have the same rap sheet and Hamhuis wasn’t injured seriously and it’s the playoffs.

I’d rather not get into this with you again, largely because it will en up derailing the entire thread, but I’ve long been an advocate of not basing the punishment on the extent of injury, the time of the year it happens, any of that. I little consistency is all I want, and Campbell can’t even manage that.

Regardless of what you think of the suspension, its clear Hossa should’ve been ejected.

Ejecting him would be consistent with past precedent on similar such incidents. At least judging from what I’ve seen at Caps games. (Or is my sample of data points a warped sample?)

Fan Post About the Hossa Non-Suspension

I felt inspired on a Sunday afternoon/evening and wrote my first FanPost. I’d love to get everyone’s comments.

In short, I wrote that, if we are looking for equity compared to Ovechkin, I think Hossa’s non-suspension is valid.

Music for the Caps

Here’s some music to inspire good play for the Caps:

“Sasha Fierce” — by Lady Gaga

“That’s the Way I Like It” — by KC and the Sunshine Band

“Jumping Jack Flash” — by the Rolling Stones

The above are to inspire great performance for the expected second line.

Other songs:

Anything by the group “Green Day” for Mike Green

Anything by the group “The Doors” or by the singer Van Morrison for Brendan and Shaone.

Anything by Abba for Nick B.

A long version of the Techno song that plays for nearly all of our power plays.

Anything by Abba for Nick B.

So of all the notable music to come out of Sweden in the past fifty years, it has to be ABBA? And, it has to be Swedish because Nicklas Backstrom is Swedish? Would we say “anything by The Beach Boys for John Carlson”? After all, they were from the United States, and he is too!

And what do you suggest to get Nicky pumped up?

I don’t have anything against The Beach Boys (what makes you think I do?). And I don’t have any specific suggestion for Backstrom other than whatever it is that he likes.

by sixsevenfiftysix on Apr 26, 2010 3:25 AM EDT up reply actions

I’m receptive to some good Swedish music selections (or what ever he likes) for Nicky. Or do you want to go to the “Front Page” and ask him?

Any song by Led Zeppelin for the power play. Because considering all the talent that’s there, it should be better than it is.
