Friday Caps Clips: Round 1, Game 5 Game Day

Photo

Your savory breakfast links:

  • Previews of tonight's Game 5 against the Canadiens from Vogs, Peerless and NHL.com, and be sure to check out our SB Nation partner Habs Eyes On The Prize for coverage from the other side of tonight's match up.
  • Notes, quotes and assorted whatnot from yesterday's day off (short version: the Caps had some travel issues getting back from Montreal, so no practice; oh, and Varly's starting tonight). [CSN Washington (O'Halloran), WaPo (CI, CI), DCEx, CP, CBC, Gazette, Habs Inside/Out]
  • Be sure to check out Japers' Rink Radio tomorrow Sunday morning at 10. Hopefully the fellas have good news to discuss.
  • Game Four's goals broken down. [EOTP]
  • The Caps have a 96.7% chance of winning the series. Until that's 100%, I'll still fret. [Puck Prob]
  • Five reasons the Caps have a 3-1 lead in the series. [Dan Rosen]
  • A couple of Gabby-related reads. [D.C. Sports Bog, Homer McFanboy]
  • The Caps' depth is coming through... which is good, since the second line is stinking out loud. [WaPo]
  • Speaking of the second line, yeah, it's struggling... [StC]
  • ... but Eric Belanger is ready for a deep playoff run nonetheless. [Capitals]
  • Alex Ovechkin, The Song. Um, ok. [Alex Ovetjkin]
  • Angry Habs Fan is angry! [Kukla's Korner]
  • The greatest goal in Caps history, bar none. Ever. F'real. [Capitals]
  • On David Steckel and draws. [DCist]
  • Just when you thought our hockey discourse couldn't get any stupider after Emptynettergate, here comes Snowshowergate. [Globe and Mail, CBC, Puck Daddy]
  • A Jacques Martin sighting in G'town? [CapsBlog]
  • Adam Proteau hates Mike Green. [The Hockey News]
  • Twitter: bringing the team and fans closer together. [Baltimore Sports Report]
  • I'm not a big Capstronaut fan... but Capstronaut totally faced? I can get on board. (And yes, everyone has the exact same thought when watching that.) [YouTube (h/t ML)]
  • Add the Caps to the long list of teams that beat down the Wiz this year. [Puck the Media]
  • Ready to go shopping? A look ahead to this summer's free agents. [TSN]
  • Per the HHoF, on this date back in 1990, "Capitals' John Druce scored twice and added two assists to lead Washington to a 7-1 win against the visiting NY Rangers, in Game 3 of the Patrick Division Finals. Druce had scored a hat trick in the previous game." So, so money.
  • Finally, happy 52nd birthday to Ryan Walter (fitting for a Caps/Habs game day).

I think it could be hard to agree on a dollar value for him. On the one hand, the record, and decent numbers. On the other hand, he played on a great team and for the second year in a row was lost his #1 role early in the postseason.

He made $4.5m this year. What do you see him and a new (or current) team agreeing on, dollar-wise, as to what he’s worth?

Possible destinations for Theo

Without looking at Capgeek, Theo would be good in EDM (no, Theo, just run away), Philly, Toronto, Tampa, and if I sat and thought a bit I’m sure there are more.

Given that sort of demand and the numbers he has, he’ll start somewhere.

Salary: he’ll have to take a cut: I don’t see him getting over $3M – more like $2.5

Nope. They’ve got Giggy for one more year.

I don’t know what Khabby’s up to – but they’ll still have him on their Cap, and they’ve got the two Double D’s: Drouin-Deslauriers and Devan Dubnyk. Neither is great, but I’m not sure they have the cap space to sign Theo, even if they can get rid of Souray.

by jordanDC on Apr 23, 2010 9:14 AM EDT up reply actions

Yes, it still counts.

by David Getz on Apr 23, 2010 9:20 AM EDT up reply actions

From what I can tell, yes. The applicable section of the CBA is 50.5(d)(i)(B)(5), which has no exception for injury. And you can’t stash him in the minors, either; his cap hit will still count against the cap, though only to the extent that it’s over $100,000.

They’re better off keeping him on LTIR until his contract is up if they want to avoid his cap hit. And if they don’t want to pay him but they want cap relief, they have to buy out his contract.

by David Getz on Apr 23, 2010 8:44 AM EDT up reply actions

I really think Philly is going to take a run at Carey Price. I also think last game may have been his final one in a Canadiens uniform. Halak may be shaky, but he doesn’t put his team shorthanded when they’re down by two with eight minutes to go.

The only thing they don’t have is a first round pick in 2011, which they’ll need if they’re going to sign him to any sort of decent offer sheet.

Killer Instinct

Whether this Caps squad has it or not is what I am most looking forward to watching tonight. Urgency is very key and yet, so is the patient discipline to stick to their game and play to the team’s collective strength over the Habs squad. A few keys in the Caps’ play that I hope to see … call them expectations:

-Strike First, Strike Hard, Show No Mercy.
-Wear the Habs D down physically with an effective dump and chase, playing the body early and often. In other words, take it to the Habs as they have been capable of doing and have demonstrated during this series.
-Wake up the PP. Simplify, simplify, simplify. (Please leave the cute shit and pillow fighting at home Grumpy, Wish, Funshine, Love-a-Lot, Friend and company)
-NO lazy passes and puck clearing from the defensive end. (yes, Flash I’m talking to you)
-Capitalize on offensive opportunities. (Aware this is cliche, but who does not still have flashbacks of OV’s Game 7 breakaway chance against the Pens last year. Would the Caps have won if OV buried the biscuit early in that game? Know way of knowing, but the tone of the game would have been far different for sure.)
-Continuing with last year’s Game 7 theme, Varly everyone on the squad, please show up and play.
-Mike Green. Shut up and play.
-You know the drill. Go to the bakery put some fresh biscuits in the oven
-Alexander Valerievich … No comment. I don’t know why I even bother.
-Gordo.

Last but not least … Finish him. Let’s go Capitals.

I am in an abusive relationship. I think. I keep telling myself it will get better and just when things are seemingly better, my heart happens to get cruelly ripped out once more ... in the playoffs. I am a Caps fan. Need I say more?

Let one make that argument. ATL was on the same points pace before and after the trade, ATL got one of the best rookies in the league this year, ATL got a first, ATL got a top 4 D, ATL got a mid-level prospect with lots of intangibles. NJD got a high power scorer that didn’t fit, underperformed, and NJD didn’t make it to 6 playoff games.

Nieds wouldn’t have helped you score either. And he wouldn’t have been cheap.

Why are you just discounting that first round pick? Teams that build through the draft rely heavily on their Firsts, including NJD. You want to call him a 3rd liner but that’s far from certain. He could be Mike Green or John Carlson.

I hate listening to people's dreams. It is like flipping through a stack of photographs. If I'm not in any of them and nobody is having sex, I just don't care.

by Rob Parker on Apr 23, 2010 12:10 PM EDT up reply actions

I didn’t like giving up a 2nd for Corvo, and that’s basically a 3rd. Look through the drafts a few years back, 2nd rounders can pan out to be great players. Granted maybe half never make it, but give yourself a chance. In a salary capped league you have to take advantage of ELCs and homegrown players.

by Super_Hans on Apr 23, 2010 12:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Didn’t like it either, but I think Green’s mixed performance in the playoffs is easier to swallow with Corvo in their. Knowing that you’ve got MP and Alzner as potential young additions makes it easier to make that move. As long as you are adding a young player a year and not paying through the nose, it’s possible to make that kind of trade. As long as it second and not a first and you are very confident that you can make the right decision with your late first.

by Super_Hans on Apr 23, 2010 12:02 PM EDT up reply actions

And you saw what happened with FL not trading boumeister and losing him. Atl got a great deal for what would have been nothing by year’s end. NJ should have had a great deal too by acquiring a top 10 forward of the last decade but the chemestry wasn’t meant to be. Doesn’t mean Kovy isn’t a great hockey player still

It’s probably 25% machismo, 75% players having spent 20+ years of their lives on the ice without a visor, and changing over to wearing one is a big change, not easy to get used to. Oh, I don’t know. I can think of at least two or three horrific eye injuries or near-eye injuries that happened this year that could have been prevented by wearing a visor. Brooks Laich’s injury, Travis Moen, Ian Laperriere. And if we want to go farther back, there’s always Brian Berard.

I don’t need to worry about the Flyers yet because the Pens reminded me that all of this good karma can flip in a hurry if we overlook game 5 at home. What a reward it would be to the fanbase to close a series at home that didn’t go 7 when favored. Congrats to your Flyer by the way, Travis. A beatdown of the Devils with the losses you sustained speaks to inner heart and courage. Whoever the Flyers play next round will need Hard Hats to make it through.

Thanks.

I think that’s the thing that has me most excited. All season long, the Flyers have been a team that’s either not shown up half the time or they seem to check out at important times or whatever. They’ve completely turned that around, so I know now that if they do wind up losing somewhere along the line here, they’re gonna go down with a fight.

With the stuff that’s gone on with them this season,I can probably live with that.

Currently we have John Erskine and Scotty Walker sparring in the Press Box in case they are needed in future rounds for an abrasive opponent. Whoever plays the Flyers will need a better PP than the Caps currently have because not punishing the Flyers penalites just empowers them to hit an agitate with impunity. Special teams are so important and winning specials tonight would be a boon for the Caps.

IIRC, the Flyers actually have an excellent PP. Whether or not that continues without Gagne and Carter is another matter, but Pronger and Timonen are great anchors for it.

I would imagine those guys get a lot of ice time in a potential series with the Flyers. Well, not a lot, but they’d at least be wearing pads instead of neck ties.

The Flyers are good on the PP as well — third in the league, IIRC — and their PK is phenomenal, but there’s no doubt they need to take less penalties. The series with the Devils was called really, really tight so I’m hoping things loosen up a bit next round, but either way… penalties have been killer.

From BSH:

Seriously?

Lay off the day-glo orange Sunny Delight…

- Backstrom and Ovechkin have as many goals as the Devils had in TOTAL for the series.
- The Devils got a grand total of two POINTS out of centers (both by Zajac) in the series. And you thought Eric Belanger and Brendan Morrison had problems?
- Parise, Langenbrunner, and Elias had a grand total of one goal among them.
- Since the lockout, Boucher is 1-1-0, 4.52, .838 against the Caps.

The Devils finished with nine goals in five games. The over/under on the Caps?… double that.

He probably does. I can also understand the excitement over there, considering they went from almost missing the playoffs to beating the #2 seed in five games. Given the injuries though, it’s going to be extremely difficult for them to hang with Washington. How long is Lapperriere out?

by Kolzilla on Apr 23, 2010 9:02 AM EDT up reply actions

Lapierre did an interview after the game. He looks like hell, but he’s a hockey player, so who cares (apologies to Brooks Laich fans out there…). He’ll probably be ready for Game 1.

by MikeL-Pivonka on Apr 23, 2010 9:08 AM EDT up reply actions

Someone at BSH needs to check their math. The Caps have already got 19 in the first round in four games against a team that has arguably better goaltending than the Flyers. Well, only 17 were against goalies, but still.

The Caps if they advance past Montreal will be able to also put lots of pucks in the net against the Flyers. The key to the series is whether they can slow down the Flyers attack.

Let's go Caps!

by MikeL-Pivonka on Apr 23, 2010 9:07 AM EDT up reply actions

They’ll get their goals. They forecheck, crash the net. play physical and get some O from the D.

But the Caps will put a ton more pressure on their D than Jersey did, so the Caps ought to get enough scoring to win the series.

by fat_daddyo on Apr 23, 2010 12:17 PM EDT up reply actions

I’ve seen the Caps long enough to understand that this franchise has lost to a lot of “hot goaltenders.” But if you look at the goaltenders to whom they lost (in series they should have won), it isn’t a bunch of stiffs, either… John Vanbiesbrouck, Sean Burke, Ron Hextall, Tom Barrasso, Nikolai Khabibulin. You want to put Brian Boucher in that group? And none of the Caps teams that lost to those goaies had anything approaching the offensive depth of this team.

The fact is, Philadelphia matched up very well against the Devils, a team that wouldn’t pose a serious offensive threat and against which they finished the regular season 5-1. That whole Atlantic Division was one big game of paper-scissors-rock. Philly beats Jersey, Jersey beats Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh beats Philly.

The Flyers allowed 22 goals in four games against the Caps, and their goaltending hasn’t gotten better in the meantime.

If you've read this far...seek help.

And the Devils continued having problems with the Flyers in the post season.

But remember, we are NOT the Devils. Different strengths and weaknesses. And the Flyers are NOT the Habs. Different strategies would work against the Flyers than against the Habs.

Back in December, Backstrom essentially torched the Flyers (with Ovi out and on a line with Laich and Semin.)

I know its been said here before, but Barry Svrluga is such an excellent sportswriter.

That article provides so much useful information and context for a the many folks who follows the Caps simply by reading what the Post gives them. And, for a guy who hasn’t written about hockey all year, it is just impressive as hell to pull together all those data points.anecdotes, etc.

I don’t know if he wants it, but it amazes me that cliche/cw trons like Mike Wise and Tracee Hamilton have columns but he don’t. (Really, I assume he prefers his awesome roving “go where the coolest sports are and write about them” beat for now.)

I wouldn't say the Second line is underperforming...

…as much as Fleischmann has been a train wreck. Semin has had several good looks every game, more than Ovie I would argue, and maybe the most consistently decent looks of anyone on the team. You can’t really help it when shots just aren’t going in. Belanger has trouble catching the puck sometimes in tight offensive situations, so that hurts their production, especially when the tempo is cranked up like it has been… and they really haven’t had too many chances against them that weren’t directly the fault of Flash.

by Super_Hans on Apr 23, 2010 9:43 AM EDT reply actions

Semin is in full “shoot over the bar” mode and needs to adjust. If he would get half of those shots on net, he’d have scored at least twice by now.

I guess maybe you read the title and not the post. Yes, the line is under-producing, but not necessarily under performing. How many goals have they had scored against them? And how many turnovers and chances against can be directly or indirectly attributed to Flash? I have heard some “Semin needs to get going” from a lot of people, and it couldn’t be further from the truth. He has gotten consistently good looks, in Sasha-esque fashion. Pucks will go in eventually. And Belanger has been playing good hockey too. Saying the second line has been bad isn’t even close to the whole story.

I don’t think they’ve been on the ice for a goal against, and Semin has had the most consistent and best shots on goal of anyone on the team. Yet, they don’t have much offense to show for it. So yea, it’s very debatable.

by Super_Hans on Apr 23, 2010 9:58 AM EDT up reply actions

You’re absolutely correct that they haven’t been on the ice for a goal against, so they’ve got that going for them.

But they’re a line – especially as currently constituted – that is out there to score goals. And they’re not doing that. Hence, underperforming.

Yea, I guess I just cut Semin slack because Flash has been so bad, (and Belanger is a non factor) yet he still manages to find space. As I think most people would agree, Semin will find the back of the net soon, and when he does we will all say he’s back on track, yet nothing really will have changed… except the goalie missed one.

$6-million 40-goal scorers shouldn’t turn into offensive nothings due to poor linemates – they should make poor linemates good.

But we all know exactly what Sasha does and what he’s capable of. And to me, he’s been doing exactly what he does best. He creates space with his speed and skill, and he takes quality shots, not necessarily because they are taken from quality places on the ice, but because he has a laser.

He has had little help from either linemate on the offensive side, and his way of elevating their line is to do it himself, not exactly carry them or include them. He’s had 20 SOG in 4 games, not many of them soft. They have had 0 goals against, despite playing with the worst defensive player on the team.

I give Flash a D-
Belanger a B-
and Semin a B+

This line passes, and it’s because of Semin, and Belanger’s defense. He will score, and everything will be fine to everyone. I can separate goal scored from performance on the ice, because they are not the same.

Part of the reason I think BB keeps running this line out there is their speed, and they have been pretty decent in the defensive and neutral zone because of it. Clearly Flash’s corsi is good because Semin has 20 SOG.

Alright...

Let’s look at Semin’s shots:

Lots of above-the-dots prayers there. Not a lot of high-traffic opportunities. Semin, of course, can score from further away than a lot of guys can because of his shot, but let’s not just talk totals – let’s talk shot quality.

Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world

by J.P. on Apr 23, 2010 10:34 AM EDT up reply actions

The number of shots from inside the circles speaks to how off Semin’s game must be. Good Sasha puts 50% of those shots in the back of the net.

You had me at no problem.

by Ninjak on Apr 23, 2010 10:38 AM EDT up reply actions

Yea, I think I touched on this. Basically, he has to create a lot of his chances by himself, so they are generally of a lesser quality. But still, when he shoots the puck with authority those are still medium scoring chances, especially from between the circles, which >50% of those shots are. If you showed me this and asked me how many goals he had, I’d say probably 2, maybe 1, maybe 3.

by Super_Hans on Apr 23, 2010 10:41 AM EDT up reply actions

Also, no net presence makes it worse for those longer shots. Anyone throwing any kind of screen is going to go a long way. Basically, he is doing his part, he just needs help. Sorry if I sound like I’m beating a dead horse. It’s ok if no one agrees with me, just trying to give another perspective.

Well, given his season and career S% of around 14.5%, he should have between 2 and 3 goals for every 19 shots.

But I’d bet that on the season, his shot distribution per 19 shots is a lot more high quality-heavy than the chart above. He needs more high-quality chances to score and he’s not getting them, and blaming his linemates is a cop-out.

Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world

by J.P. on Apr 23, 2010 10:45 AM EDT up reply actions

Sure, and there’s always less time and space in the post season, but he still manages all of these shots. Different expectations. I know you expect him to get better looks and score, but I think I expected him to do basically this. And I think it’s pretty reasonable to pin some of the blame on none of these going in on his line mates, because neither of them crash the net, which would directly benefit this shot chart. But point taken, we just have differing opinions of what we think Semin is capable of.

Semin has been playing with:

A 25-goal/59 point wing
A 23-goal/51 point wing/center
A 12-goal/42 point center and
A 15-goal/41 point center who’s currently winning 70% of his faceoffs.

Most teams would jizz in their pants to have “offensive sandbags” like that.

To put a finer point on it, Semin currently has fewer goals than Fehr, Bradley, Chimera, Carlson, and Corvo. None of those guys get the ice time of Semin, nor do they play with the same quality of linemates.

Flash has been horrible, and Belanger clearly has trouble with the high speed at which he needs to operate and make decisions in the offensive zone. His offensive counterparts have not been contributing to Semin’s play very much, despite their numbers.

by Super_Hans on Apr 23, 2010 11:02 AM EDT up reply actions

I agree that some of the blame is on his linemates. I noted after game three that none of the forwards on that line have any net presence. Hell, I rarely saw any of them even near the low slot. Semin, however, is the best player on that line, and has to make up for that disparity. I would hope Bruce would address the issue by adding a Laich-minded forward, but he knows something I don’t I guess.

It’s hard to gain “net presence” when your linemate just heaves the puck at the net from 50ft at random intervals. He’s not gaining the zone and setting anything up. He’s pressing.

Corsi is subject to some anomalies when the sample size is only four games. Flash and Semin had the highest two Corsi ratings last game, but I do not think it was an accurate representation of how they played. (This is not a Bushwood joke)

"Do not be afraid to ask for credit, for our way of refusing is very polite."

by Laich It Or Lump It on Apr 23, 2010 10:22 AM EDT up reply actions

Yea, and to me, it’s a result of a small sample size that Semin hasn’t scored in 4 games when he has 20 shots on, and another handful high and wide. He should probably have 2 by now, on average, if he took all of his shots again.

by Super_Hans on Apr 23, 2010 10:26 AM EDT up reply actions

Goal scoring is a clearly defined event and is an indisputable statistic. It is the most accurate indication of a player’s contribution the the game. Corsi is subject to what other players are doing on the ice and some statistics that are not as clearly defined as goals, i.e. blocked shots and missed shots. Don’t get me wrong, I love Corsi ratings. I just don’t think it can be argued that a strong Corsi rating can compensate for a lack of goal scoring, particularly in a best-of-seven series.

Yea, I guess I brought up corsi to defend the overall performance of the line, depsite sucky Flash. And goals more than anything are subject to sample size. I just feel that Sasha could’ve had a few goals right now and we’d be talking about how well this line has played, not giving up any goals and scoring a few.

by Super_Hans on Apr 23, 2010 10:58 AM EDT up reply actions

I also suspect that their Corsi is inflated by both of their propensities to gain the offensive zone, pull up and heave a shot that most often gets blocked Blocked shots count for Corsi.

Let’s not get too far into the statistical weeds on this. Semin (or players in general of his type) are graded on outcomes, and in this case the outcomes are “goals scored” and “goals contributed to.” Semin has no goals and one assist. His line (take your pick, Belenger or Morrison) has one goal and four assists.

Any second line on the planet of Hockeytron that has one goal and four assists through four games of a playoff series is, by definition, underperforming relative to expected outcomes. Semin is a part of that, just as is Laich, Belanger, and Morrison (when the latter two have been on that line).

During the season teams really don’t have time to really game plan opposing teams. During the playoffs, you know your opponents, you know who you are playing, you game plan against them. Semin is playing a regular season game, he has yet to adjust his game to deal with the trap. He will probably do better the next round (if we make it) against Philly. But not because he had adjusted to anything, but because Philly plays more open than Montreal.

I wouldn’t say bad per se, but mediocre. He’s getting shots and he’s creating some chances, but he’s also going through long periods of time where he doesn’t look particularly dangerous, and when Semin’s on his game he constantly look dangerous.

Belanger’s contributions to the PK and in the dot have been great, though he hasn’t done much of anything offensively.

If anything this line is playing exactly the way I’d expect them to play. Semin finding his own space and creating decent shots on goal, Flash playing soft and not contributing much of anything, and Belanger playing generally good in his own end, and medicore to useless in the offensive zone.

I know this is a popular comparison that people like to casually make around here sometimes, but please stop it. Kovalev scored 30 or more goals three times in his whole career. Semin has done it three out of four seasons in the NHL already. He’s a much more prolific talent and a much better goalscorer. I know we’re all angry that Semin is slumping but please, let’s re-consider the Kovalev comparison.

This. Semin is also better defensively and is becoming an excellent penalty killer.

Nope. I’m sticking with it.

It’s not a perfect 1:1 comparison, but when I look around for comparables, he’s pretty much at the top of the list.

I’d list his comps as:

1. Kovalev.
2. Milan Hejduk
3. Alex Frolov
4. Marian Gaborik (high-end)

As F&B points out, Kovalev put up those stats during a much less offensive era of hockey, and Kovalev rarely had the opportunity to play in a system that allowed him to freelance as much as Sasha gets away with. Put it another way – if Sasha played for anyone but Boudreau, I think you’d see him getting his ice time curtailed on occasion.

When it comes to unparalleled skill matched by periodic lack of focus, Kovalev and Semin are bosom buddies. To his credit, Sasha’s “bad times” have never been as protracted as Kovalev’s. On the other hand, Sasha has had the benefit of playing in a system and for a coach that doesn’t stifle him.

When this came up a while ago, I brought up this story about Kovalev and his unparalleled skill — he used to line up at the red line, then flip pucks into the air and land them on top of the net. This is from 90 feet away. That’s un-fucking-believable. If I ever saw someone do something like that in a game, I would lose my mind. On a team with Mario Lemeiux and Jaromir Jagr at the height of his powers, Alex Kovalev was talked about as the guy who had the best hands and/or most puck skill out of all of them. Sound familiar?

The comparison between the two (at least as far as streaky, sublimely skilled players is concerned) is very, very apt in my opinion.

by Rather Bengt on Apr 23, 2010 1:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Plenty of players were able to score 30 goals or more each season throughout the 90’s, so I’m not buying the era as the end-all explanation for a 20-25% discrepancy in production between the two players. Kovalev didn’t perform as well as Semin has. Also, Semin’s previous seasons have been derailed by injuries and his numbers were still pretty strong. He’s just a better player.

Labeling both as inconsistent I can buy, but Semin is a cut above based on performance.

And you should also focus on what coaches and players say about them. I can’t think of another player outside Kovalev and Semin that I’ve heard “he’s the most talented guy on the team but…” more frequently.

Cool. I love the Semin vs. Kovalev debate because you guys are right in that their skill sets are similar and that both were/are extremely frustrating at times. I guess we’ll see how Semin’s career pans out, but 40 goals this season IMO qualifies as living up to expectations for him. If he can sustain this kind of production for the next few years then I’d say he’s living up to his potential.

Just read a reminder that the Norris finalists get announced today. Given the Proteau vote, any odds of how many other voters hate Green, too and he’s not top three?

He deserves to win but the Keith hype machine has gained too much momentum, IMO. I fear this may be Green’s last legitimate opportunity to win, because Doughty is going to own it (at least until Carlson does).

The Devils

Boy that Kovalchuk trade really put them in the SC driver’s seat. Two words: Jaques Lemaire. When that many players “don’t show up” for a playoff series, it means there is only one solution.

On the bright side, thanks so much for hooking us up with Philly in Round 2. This time it won’t require Dale Hunter in Game 7 OT.

Since the Caps weren’t practicing yesterday, I hope they got a good dose of that game. Even if Pittsburgh wins the series, games like that suck you dry and make a Cup run tougher. It would be nice to have an explanation point on this series to further drive home the point that these aren’t last years Caps. This team finds a way to win Game 2. This team finds a way to put the hammer down on the two road wins and come home 3-1. Getting it done in 5 with another fine goaltending effort would do much to restore faith that we are a true Cup contender.

Was he trying to blame Kovalchuk or something? Players won’t do what I tell them to on the PP? Well, aren’t you supposed to have some weapons like withholding ice time, ratting them out in the media earlier on in the series, challenging their manhood and stuff to motivate them. When you start complaining about following the script as a coach, that undermines yourself because it looks like you are not a motivator of men.

Thankfully Caps fans don’t have to be yo-yoed by the One Great Hope of midseason trading to alter a season over the last couple of years. Devs fans are going to have an even longer experience than San Jose over the offseason because they gambled to change their postseason fortunes and ended up with a worse result. Thrashers must be patting themselves on the back right now.

Goaltending, coaching, system. Everything’s got to be reevaluated for the Devils now after this kind of exit. 48 hours of that kind of conversation in these parts after Game 1 was no fun. Lemaire’s a good coach when it come to instituting the trap. But he clearly had no idea how to effectively deploy his firepower (and we saw that in Minnesota as well), and the game has changed to the point where you can no longer trap your way to victory.

Has Kellyn or any of our other Devils friends (Space Weed doesn’t count) stopped by to remind us how we need to play better D and trap to win a playoff series? They seem oddly quiet today. Maybe, just maybe, one or two of them might be prepared to admit that you need offense in addition to defense. Brodeur is done, the Devils era of fearsome dominance is done. I’m so happy.

"Don’t want to be where Pittsburgh is right now " - bears repeating

It is easy to see why Pittsburgh may have been lax in letting the Sens get out fast and get a 2 goals lead. As many expected, they came back, put up an amazing amount of shot attempts, over 100 (the Sens had 47 BLOCKED shots last night – that has to be a record) and went ahead halfway through the third. And then something happened: they really expected to win at that point, and a minute and a half later, the Sens tied it up again.
Then they played the better part of a game only to lose and give the Sens hope.

I get a terrible knot in my stomach when I think of that. Putting any thoughts of getting to a series to a Game 7 is a HUGE lift to the Sens and would obviously be to the Habs. Anything could happen, injuries to key players, anything. That’s why this series needs to end tonight.

I do feel the Caps are looking a little past the Canadiens.

For example, “That’s our song!” would work perfectly as a subject line.

Just put something in the subject line so people can collapse the pic. I usually just put a period.

Brooks Laich is an unapologic homer. Steinz has the story.

Before the Caps left for Montreal, I asked Brooks Laich what it’s like playing in front of the Bell Centre crazies.

“Fantastic place to play,” he said. “They’re nuts. It’s almost like a soccer stadium.”

Loudest rink in the league, right?

“It’s one of the loudest places,” he said. “Obviously I’m biased, but I think our building is the best. I really think our fans are fantastic, and I think they get themselves involved in the game more than maybe fans around the league. But definitely comparable to our building.”

I mean, totally, completely straight face, he said that the Bell Centre is “definitely comparable” to the Verizon Center. That’s called sticking up for the home team

Since i'm on everyone(mma blogs) that is not true. MMA mania gets alot of traffic as does bloody elbow.

In college football texas has the most traffic. Definitely the most i have seen. I have seen almost 2000 posts on 1 halftime thread for one of their games. MMA mania would be close to this one.

Be sure to read Peerless' killer analysis of Game 5

and know this:
The Capitals are 2-6 all-time in Game 5s when leading three games to one in a series.

The Canadiens have come back from a 3-1 series deficit in recent memory, winning the final three games against Boston in the 2004 conference quarterfinals.

LOL!

That “Alexander Ovechkin: The Song” link includes one of the best quotes I’ve ever seen in the interview, at least amusement-value-wise:

And he also whinnies after he bodychecks someone.

He gallops, he slams people, he whinnies, and you might even see a little flame coming out of his nostrils.

Dennis Potvin with the most hysterically inconsistent analysis ever.

You see, the small Canadiens can’t get to the front of the net, and on the other side, the big Canadiens D aren’t allowed to stop anyone from going to the net.
