I was just wondering because I’m sure this has been discussed before, but why don’t they put a chip in the puck to know if it crosses the lines the pads or something?

by jaytown99 on Apr 22, 2010 6:39 AM EDT reply actions

There’s more problems with that than you would anticipate. Because the puck has to cross the line completely and it is not a perfect sphere, there are situations in which the chip, if it were singular, would be across the “line” but not the entire puck. To implement it properly, you’re talking about installing multiple chips in every puck… that’s cool, but it’s a big and sorta unnecessary step that I’m sure would cost a bundle. Video review is pretty adequate, although not infallible for sure.

by cajuncook on Apr 22, 2010 6:49 AM EDT up reply actions

Not only that, but it would likely fail all the time, because the goals would have to be outfitted with something able to measure whether it crossed or not, too.

by DrinkingPartner on Apr 22, 2010 7:13 AM EDT up reply actions

And one of the problems with the glow pucks was that the chip inside them made the puck weigh/feel noticeably different to the players, so there’s a chance that this chip would too (although technology has advanced since then).

by galaxysong9 on Apr 22, 2010 7:56 AM EDT up reply actions

If you put more than one in and they’re not exactly balanced, it will. Microchips aren’t that heavy, but more than one would feel different, I bet.

by gotsparkly on Apr 22, 2010 8:07 AM EDT up reply actions

And camera technology is truly excellent. Even if the chips worked really well, I’m not convinced you’d do better than you do with good cameras.

Now, why don’t they install really great cameras in every arena — that’s a different question.

or just figure out a way to get a camera under the ice in the goal. I saw something similar where some NBA/college games had a camera in the floor down under the hoop, probably more for a funky angle than scoring purposes.

by Elliotte on Apr 22, 2010 8:16 AM EDT up reply actions

Ha. There are cameras that you can put in a button hole. Attach one to the inside of the crossbar. If they can put one in the back of the goal (has anyone besides Ovi ever taken one of those out?) they can put one on the inside of the crossbar.

Hanlon's Razor: Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.

by gotsparkly on Apr 22, 2010 8:24 AM EDT up reply actions

Right, but the one over the goal already covers that purpose for the most part. The need for a camera under the ice is to be able to see the puck that is being shielded by the goalie or other player from the overhead shot.

by HateOffSeason on Apr 22, 2010 9:15 AM EDT up reply actions

exactly. For example in the Pens/Sens game Sunday, there was a Sens goal disallowed b/c the player kicked the puck, swung and missed with his stick, the puck bounced around under MAF for a bit, the Sen took a swipe with his stick (may or may not have hit the puck) and then it comes out from under MAF into the goal. It was originally called a goal, then disallowed cause of the kick (and a lack of clear evidence he ever touched it with his stick again).

So in this case a view from underneath the ice should have shown for sure if the puck was touched or not while under MAF.

What killed me was the fact that he then was right back on the ice for his regular shift after getting out of the box, and went on to start the next period.

by jordanDC on Apr 22, 2010 8:29 AM EDT up reply actions

Unfortunately, if he was in the starting line up, as the visiting team he has to be on at the start of the next period. If I understand the rules correctly, the home team can then make a line change before the puck is dropped.

It is a bit confusing because rule 86.8 indicates that it must be the starting line-up, which I presume is the one defined in rule 7.1. But rule 7.1 seems to imply that the starting line-up can be altered after the game has started.

by renstar on Apr 22, 2010 10:01 AM EDT up reply actions

I don’t think this is right. I don’t think there is any rule about who has to start the second or third period.

I hate listening to people's dreams. It is like flipping through a stack of photographs. If I'm not in any of them and nobody is having sex, I just don't care.

by Rob Parker on Apr 22, 2010 1:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Before the start of the second and third periods (and overtime periods in the playoffs), the teams will proceed directly to their respective players’ benches. Only the starting line-up will be allowed on the ice. The visiting team will immediately place its starting line-up at the face-off circle, then the home team will follow, with the Referee allowing the home team to make a line change if so desired prior to the face-off.

I’m pretty sure this generically refers to “the players that the coach has designated start the period” rather than “the starting lineup from the beginning of the game.”

Sometimes, you really just want to hit a b**ch.

by dinasaur on Apr 22, 2010 1:30 PM EDT up reply actions

it isn’t really clear, but i read somewhere that it was the case that the starters for the game had to be the starters for the period, excepting for injury. I think it had to do with someone putting the wrong morrison/n on the starting line up card. I don’t really recall where I read that, so I could totally be making that up.

The only place the “starting line-up” is ever defined is in rule 7.1 so it is never really defined on a per-period basis.

This notion can’t be underestimated if DC wants to be a destination for good hockey players and possibly those who will accept a discount.

Here in the STL, baseball players and, from time to time, hockey and football players want to come to St. Louis because of how the fans here treat them. Many (Tkaczuk being the latest example) end up settling here. Kurt Warner still lives here. He buys his groceries down the road from me.

Fans here don’t accost pro athletes. The let them live their lives and enjoy the community.

I remember one time I was at a Panera during the football season and Torry Holt, the WR for the Rams, walked in to get some bagels. No one said a word to him. He got his bagels and headed for the door. Just then, a kid about 14-years old said to his parents rather loudly “Hey!! That’s Torry Holt!!” The place erupted in laughter. Torry nodded, waved and went about his way.

Yes – very possible. It depends on the community. All the youth hockey families obviously know the Blues. MacInnis, Mellanby, Chase, Tkaczuk have kids or coach themselves in my kid’s hockey association

But — folks here treat the Rams and Cards the same way. They definitely recognize the Cardinals. I would bet that Pujols can take his family out to McDonalds and would generally (not entirely) be left alone. He is Albert, after all.

At the start of every period, OV always skates out full speed from the tunnel, does a series of abdominal twists, turns and goes full speed to the end of the bench he sits at for that period and sprays ice.

The only difference is the tunnels on that side at Bell Centre. Kid was not hurt and probably doesnt even remember it.

I post on Pensblog sometimes to keep in touch with a few people over there…by and large the party line most of the “rest” of the people over there were pushing on this non incident was hilarious. Just get used to it. Some people honestly believe the entire league hates Ovie as much as they do as well. Invariably those people only are from Pitt, Buff, or now Chicago. now we get to see how far the team has come since last season. down 2-0 and 3-1 to the rangers, up 2-0 and 3-2 to the penguins….can these caps minimize the drama and just move on to the next round, please? or at least come out with an A+ effort on friday?

by Natty Bumppo on Apr 22, 2010 7:36 AM EDT reply actions

These Caps have never been up 3-1. I thought their effort was good last night, minus a couple of bad plays, but the energy was there. Montreal is a desperate team and they are playing as such. We are dictating the style of play. We again managed to weather the storm in the 2nd and pulled away in the 3rd. I give our guys an overall B+ for last night.

I thought their effort was good last night, minus a couple of bad plays

On the contrary, I thought the team sucked ass for much of the first two periods. I thought they relied overmuch on Varly to bail them out, particularly during the second. They had shift after shift where they ran around like squirrels on crystal meth. Without Varly’s sweet glove and Gordo and Knuble, I don’t think we win that game.

Put simply, this team isn’t good enough to play half the game like they did last night against an opponent capable of capitalizing on those errors.

I thought the 1st period was a draw and compared to game 3, a markedly better beginning to the game. The 2nd period was bad, but you have to expect the Canadiens at some point to turn it on, they did. We (Varlamov) didn’t crack.

Second was fugly. Caps needed to dump it in and pulverize to slow Montreal down but they kept turning it over either in the neutral or high in the offensive zone.

They got way lucky to get out of that period tied.

Yessir, I agree.

On a more hopeful note, when the Caps do break out against the Pens, they ought to be able to get through neutral with speed and possession, which will suit the Caps much more.

Or so I hope.

The question is though, is this because we relax for a period or because we are playing a team that employs the neutral ice trap which we have trouble with from time to time?

I personally think its both… but that being said I think we would match up better with team that doesn’t play that style of hockey.

Roy explained why he used to do the “Statue of Liberty” when he had the puck in his catching glove. It was actually a very simple concept. If he holds the puck above the cross bar, then the other team can’t knock the puck out of the glove without playing the puck with a high stick, meaning there’s no way they can put the puck into the net.

The only way it goes in is if Roy drops it…which he did on a few occasions…

last night’s "locker was snubbed from the all caps/canadiens team" discussion must have lasted three shifts.

It did last forever, but I’ll take the occasional overly lengthy tangent as part of the whole package.

I’m biased, but I think they’re some of the best local announcers out there. Locker is just so fair. He calls out Caps players when necessary, compliments opposing players, points out when we got lucky with a penalty or non-penalty.

The handful of other local teams I listen to (mostly NYR) don’t come close to Locker’s level of fairness.

IMO, that is what is absolutely killing the Habs in this series. The Caps, when they are down, keep their cool, bear down, and come right back, because they know they can. They are resilient as hell and never say die. The Habs, on the other hand, are prone to frustration when they get down, or even when the momentum isn’t going their way (see Game 2), and have a bad tendency to give into that frustration, and the result is dumb penalties. Even if the Caps don’t score on the ensuing PP, it’s still 2 minutes when the Habs have a hard time getting the puck and are on the defensive.

So, out of curiosity, with the NHL trying to clamp down in blind side head shots, is there any chance the league looks at the hit on Corvo? Pretty much the definition of what they are trying to eliminate.

I would guess that since no injury occurred, they won’t bother to even look at it.

Honestly, I don’t even need a suspension there, and I think it would be pretty crappy to suspend a player in the playoffs for a rule that has been on the books for all of about ten minutes.

If Montreal can come back in this series we will look to Carey Price shooting a puck at our celebration and slashing Backstrom after his goal from the bench as the turning point…

Don’t be surprised if Price is fined for shooting the puck at the Caps. The league just fined Shane O’Brien from the Canucks for shooting a puck at Jeff Halpern during warmups.

Shane O’Brien has been fined $2,500 for flipping a puck at Jeff Halpern before Game 3. He said it was friendly fire. Halpern had tossed a puck his way before Game 1 during the warmup.
The pair were teammates in Tampa Bay and O’Brien swears they were just joking around. League disciplinarian Colin Campbell didn’t find it fun or funny. He also fined head coach Alain Vigneault $1,000.

“When we act out in these ways — and we’ve all done it, we’ve all been part of it — it’s the mentality as a group and it’s about us being accountable to one another,” Montreal forward Mike Cammalleri said. “It’s not one guy, it’s not two guys, it’s our maturity level as a group, maybe. I just think everyone knows what he is at this point. Nobody expects him to be a shut down D guy; they expect him to play with the puck. In terms of that, he’s been good. He’s the only D not named Markov that has a chance at making our first forechecker miss (and has done so a couple of times). He’s the only non-Markov threat in the offensive zone as well. And his TOI speaks to that; only Markov has gotten more minutes at ES than Bergeron (I haven’t actually added them up, but it’s my rough take after looking at the TOI following every game). Maybe the players don’t trust him and Martin does, I don’t know. I just don’t look at Bergeron as a guy where you say “if he’s on the ice we’re going to get killed.”

I guess. But he’s not alone and he brings a skill that the rest of the team doesn’t. Did everyone see Gomez bitch out on a PK clear when AO was bearing down on him last night? Right after that AO smashed Gionta. He was in a midget stomping mood. The point is, that’s why you finish checks; because it eventually leads to turnovers. That’s always been the book on MAB and he’s living up to it. I just don’t think that makes him untrustworthy.

I look at it this way:

I’ve got a choice of two guys to pass the puck to in my own end – Markov or Bergeron?

I’m gonna pick Markov every time. If I did that with every Habs defender, I’d pick all of them before Bergeron, except for maybe O’Byrne. Gill and Gorges might not make spectacular breakout passes, but you know that they’ll at least bang it off the glass and out to center ice.

I think Bergeron is a bad defensive-zone turnover waiting to happen.

Anyhow, if it’s not Bergeron, who would you put on to replace him?

The stained horizon

by D'ohboy on Apr 22, 2010 2:04 PM EDT up reply actions

I was pretty clear that Markov is superior. That’s not even a question.

You can pick Gill or Gorges, but that’s also a false hypothetical. You’ll never have Gorges and Gill and MAB to pick from. You have MAB and one other D. Maybe if it’s Gorges or Gill you would rather pass to that guy, but you overlook the fact that if you are under pressure and need to make a pass you probably are Gorges or Gill. I disagree with your conclusion that you’d rather have Gill with the puck on his stick, maybe I could buy Gorges.

Your original point was who can’t be trusted on the ice. I just don’t think MAB is that bad. MAB might be a bad D zone turnover waiting to happen, but we have a couple of those guys on our own team and I don’t think any of them are quite the level of “untrustworthy.”

And exactly, you can’t replace MAB, not that it makes him trustworthy in a universal sense.

I hate listening to people's dreams. It is like flipping through a stack of photographs. If I'm not in any of them and nobody is having sex, I just don't care.

by Rob Parker on Apr 22, 2010 2:08 PM EDT up reply actions

It’s a thought exercise, not a precise replication of reality. Imagine that you’re a center – Gionta, let’s say. And you get the puck in the corner (suspend disbelief here). Your outlet options are MAB or any other Habs defenseman. I could see myself being willing to pass it to anyone before MAB, other than O’Byrne, and he’s also on the list.

I disagree with your conclusion that you’d rather have Gill with the puck on his stick, maybe I could buy Gorges.

I don’t trust Gill to make a good outlet pass. I do, however, trust him to eat the puck or dump it to center ice if he’s got nothing. MAB has a tendency (like Green) to force plays that aren’t there and make bad turnovers.

And exactly, you can’t replace MAB

Replace him on the list, not on the team.

So if the other 4 are correct, which Hab would you select to replace MAB on the list of 5 guys that the Habs don’t trust on the ice?

Well I wasn’t even talking about Erskine. I was talking about the guys that are (allegedly) paid to make plays in the offensive zone. I think Corvo is a pretty good comparison. You like the fact that he can just skate the puck out of trouble sometimes. So do I. MAB brings that same skill and has done it to us this series. But they are both prone to bad turnovers; and both have done it this series. I don’t think either can be called “untrustworthy.” I think at this point we are talking about a difference of definitions. I read “untrustworthy” as “oh shit that motherfucker is on the ice; this puck is going in our net or we’re taking a PIM.” I don’t think that really applies with MAB.

Any time you try to argue for fanbase superiority, you are being a gigantic douche.

Some teams may have more or less knowledgeable fans. Some teams may have more polite or more rude fans. None of this makes one fanbase better than another.

You had me at no problem.

by Ninjak on Apr 22, 2010 3:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, good point. I guess my main problem, and the reason I single out team success, is because fans literally have nothing to do with it. I guess you could argue home ice advantage if your home crowd is raucous but I don’t really buy it. When fans boo an offside en mass because they think it’s a PIM that at least indicts the fans that took part. Whether your team wins or loses has nothing to do with you as a fan. It’s a cheap trump card that doesn’t have anything to do with the merits.

Maybe, but were they better than last year? Could they have made better moves in the off-season? Sure, they made the playoffs, but wasn’t trading away one of your best prospects in return for Scott Gomez’s contract a pretty bad move?

I think a lot of us were questioning if he was going to tweak. It looked like the Caps did change a little, esp, in the 3rd period of the second game when the whole team started dumping more.

The Habs have changed more though. They barely look like a trap team anymore…I’m not sure why they abandoned that as it was their only chance. I’m sure they’ll be back to it tomorrow.

I look to the future because that's where I'm going to spend the rest of my life.

by zephyr on Apr 22, 2010 12:15 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t know that they’ve abandoned it, we just aren’t making 100 foot diagonal passes through the neutral zone anymore. We have been carrying the puck and making short passes but most of the players have been willing to chip the puck in deep when they get stood up at this point.

I agree that a lot of it is the Caps playing better. Although, the other side of it is they simply aren’t trapping as well as they were in the first game. They have been much more open to trading chances for portions of the game.

Another factor is that the Habs were almost never behind before the 2nd period of Game 3, apart from a short stretch in the 3rd period of Game 1. When they’re down, especially by multiple goals, they have to change it up.

He took the puck in all by himself, got swarmed by four Canadiens, and then made a high-risk pass across the ice over to Ovechkin while standing just over the blue line.

The result was a goal (for the Caps this time, not against them). And I thought of:

Stuff happens for a reason…most drafts even once you get to that point in the 1st round you’re not dealing with 100% sure things at all. We’re talking about 2 different types of players/needs as well. Will Fehr ever put up Getzlaf numbers? Probably not. But will what he is turning himself into and what we ended up getting as a result of taking Fehr where/when we did end up a better whole than whatever else might have happened? I like the chances as it stands currently.

once again

i dont want to hear anyone complain about caps fans booing everytime a cap falls down. so many times the bell centre was lousy with boos after obvious non penalties. note to habs fans, you are allowed to push a guy down from behind if the man has the puck as knuble did to one of your guys. “counter hits” ala plekanec on green are penalties…ironic call since green is the king of the counter hits.

So true. The Mrs. (whose only really been watching this past season) kept yelling at the Habs fans to shut up and afterwards was commenting on how bad/stupid those fans are for complaining about the not-a-penalty calls.

by Elliotte on Apr 22, 2010 9:26 AM EDT up reply actions

i’ll give them credit for being incredibly supportive of their team. and maybe some of the booing is to try and influence the refs to make the next call, but really, some of the groans were for obvious non calls.

I think every arena does this. Especially after the other team has gotten a PP or two in a row, the crowd wants a call on every contact.

"counter hits" ala plekanec on green are penalties

If you’re playing the puck and someone tries to hit you, counter-hits most definitely are not illegal.

agree, but this was not the case in the plekanec situation. plekanec played the puck into the corner and then hit green way away from the puck.

green has been called for similar hits. when both players go to the corner and he hit the forward before either played the puck. he does it alot, sometimes legally, sometimes not.

Just trying to capture the spirit of the thing...

by dcsportsfan1 on Apr 22, 2010 1:11 PM EDT up reply actions

I’ve yet to see that called, but if you say so…

The issue is usually distance and direction to the puck. If you’re skating toward the puck and you’re five feet from it, that’s not a “counter-hit,” that’s just interference.

If Green has the puck in his feet, or near him, and someone tries to hit him, but he hits them first, that’s perfectly legal.

It sounds to me as though the play you’re describing isn’t a “counter-hit,” but rather good old-fashioned interference.

The stained horizon

by D'ohboy on Apr 22, 2010 1:42 PM EDT up reply actions

right, the penalty is interference but i have heard it called a counter-hit (maybe its just locker who calls it that). basically hitting a guy before he hits you kind of thing.

last nights was the most blatant i’ve seen cause it was barely inside the blue line and well away from where the puck was. most of the time those things happen near the corners and are not called cause it’s usually two guys in a fight for the puck.

Just trying to capture the spirit of the thing...

I half-agree and half-disagree.

The crowd in Montreal is trying to influence the referees.

The crowd in DC often doesn’t seem to know what’s going on. Witness the “too many men on the ice” penalty in game 1. I was standing up cheering for the upcoming power-play, while people in my section were looking at me like I had a penis growing out of my forehead.

I’ve seen people yell at the linesmen for “calling penalties” when they raise their arms for off-sides. Somehow, I don’t think that’s going on in Montreal.

On the other hand, maybe I’m just an unrepentant hockey snob.

DC fans are definitely not too knowledgeable at the games. The people sitting around me are never aware of why a whistle has blown when there’s a hand pass, nor why there isn’t a 2-minute minor when the official makes the high-stick motion after the puck was played with a high stick.

We haven’t beaten the Canadiens yet, but so far Semin, Green and Flash have combined for roughly 235 minutes of ice time and 4 assists. Their normal season production had them contributing 13 points in the same amount of ice time. Lets not even talk about the 1 for PP.

We may not need them v. a “they really don’t have anything” Canadiens team, but moving forward…

I tend to think that those three guys in particular would love to play in a more free-wheelin’ type of game than the Habs allow to be played. I’d look for them to be better next round (which is, of course, not to excuse their play in this one).

I agree that they’d love a more free wheeling game, but it’s not like MON is the worst match up for them. They are also all guys that would prefer to play a less physical team, and MON gives them that. Sure, you can’t just puck up the puck at your own goal line and go end to end, but you can’t do that against any playoff team (except the Caps!!!!!1) so in the big picture MON is a pretty good match up for those 3. Not good enough.

Anyone catch the Kings/'Nucks game?

That series is shaping up to be pretty good, although I’m not sure I can take much more of the media fellating Doughty. I can’t even count how many times I heard “future hall of famer” or “greatest defenseman in the game today” during the broadcast. Also, as much as Luongo kept them in that game, he let the Kings back in it. Not sure they’re a favorite in the West in my eyes if he keeps that kind of play up.

But Doughty deserves the accolades. The guy is a ridiculous stud and he’s going to run away and hide with the Norris in the near future.

On the Price meltdown

After Chimera’s goal, he immediately put his glove over his face and glanced at Price. Immediately at the time I was wondering if he was spitting out his mouthpiece or making the “in your face” gesture to Price. When Price fired the puck at the celebratory huddle, I figured it was the latter, and that the two had been yapping at each other earlier in the game.

West Coast, checking in

Anyone care to discuss the questionable decision to pull Price down two goals with 2:30 to go? After all, someone was saying just the other day that that strategy never works.

Instead, had they given Moore another minute to complete his end to end rush, they could have pulled the G actually down by one. Which then might have been useful.

Doesn’t 2:30 seem too early? Thoughts?

IIRC the Caps had just been called for icing, so the faceoff would’ve been in the Caps’ zone which is what you want. Down by two, teams usually pull the goalie around the 2 min mark anyway.

I can’t remember if the Caps had just changed or not, but maybe Martin figured that even they lost the faceoff they could pressure the Caps into a turnover. When you’re staring at going down 3-1, you’ve got to take a few risks. At this point the size of the loss isn’t really important.

See I think the Moore goal came partly as a result of the Caps scoring the EN and starting to relax/celebrate too soon. Then Moore comes in full of fire and puts in a shot that barely get’s over Varly’s shoulder (saw it deflect off his shoulder on the replay).

Varly maybe could have played that shot a little better. Rest of the team, too.

by jordanDC on Apr 22, 2010 10:47 AM EDT up reply actions

I give Varly a pass on that one. It’s SUCH a low percentage shot, but perfectly placed, that one’s tough to stop. It’s the kind of backhander I expect from Zetterberg or Malkin, not Moore.

Mostly, I was pissed that it took the GWG away from Ovie. But then, it did give him and Baxter extra points. Someone’s gotta chase down Crosby on that leaderboard.

by Ninjak on Apr 22, 2010 10:49 AM EDT up reply actions

Eh. Moore doesn’t make that rush if the Caps don’t give up with a 3 goal lead. Do you trust them to score 2 goals in the final minute? Sometimes you have to do it.

Andy Murray pulled the goalie with ~5 minutes left in a playoff game against DET down 3 goals. LAK tied and then won the game. Ridiculous gamble but it paid off.

is it really beyond debate? they’re about even in my book. different skill sets for different situations. getting back to my point: if we both accept that sloan is a marginal NHL player…someone more suited to be a 7th defender sitting in the stands than a starter…then maybe he does deserve “half the shit he gets.” i don’t think acknowledging that he isn’t very good excuses him from getting crap when he screws the pooch (or giving GMGM crap for signing sloan to an additional two years at terms above the minimum).

anyhow. you can have your lobby, it’s cool. we’re all cheering for the same team. but i’ll carry on tearing at my hair whenever sloan stands around on the ice without identifying his man.

as co-founder of the sloan fan club i’ll address this to you: next time you see someone giving sloan “more shit than he deserves,” why not address that person directly so we can all better understand this illegitimate anti-sloan sentiment?

I wonder if that’s a bad habit he picked up playing in the E and A? He’s a little like Giroux, AAAA-level. In the AHL, his skating is better than a lot of guys so he can chase and still get back into position to not get burned to often. But his skating isn’t good enough to get away with that in the NHL.

just a thought; I could be completely off the mark.

All I'm gonna say

is that the Caps better close out this series on Friday, because if they don’t, I’m going to miss game 6 since I’ll be in Mexico.

Also, I really hope that one of Boston-Buffalo or Philly-New Jersey or Pittsburgh-Ottawa (preferably the last one) goes to seven games so that the second round starts shortly before I get back a week later.

IIRC the NHL possible playoff dates are already set, only the NBA does the “next playoff series start as soon as possible”.

Not sure, but I don’t think that is correct. Only the NBA starts each SERIES as soon as possible, but i am pretty sure the NHL has flexibility in starting the next ROUND sooner if none of the games in the previous round extend beyond a certain date.

by GusDaMan on Apr 22, 2010 12:01 PM EDT up reply actions

i dont think the nba reseeds after the first round like the nhl, so it’s possible for them to start the next series out.

for the nhl, you dont know who you are playing. the caps could play the flyers, b’s or pens in the next round. if the flyers win tonight then we know we would play them if we finish off the canadians. i doubt the series would start before next weekend.

by dcsportsfan1 on Apr 22, 2010 12:06 PM EDT up reply actions

The NBA does not reseed. The 1-8 winner plays the 4-5 winner, so that if both series are done, they can start it up even if the other series are still going on in their conferences.

That seems to be how it works in bouncy-ball, as the NCAA tourney doesn’t reseed, nor does the NIT, etc.

I actually had someone try to argue with me today that we’d play the winner of the PIT-OTT series no matter what b/c of the “bracket” – I was like “sorry, no bracket in hockey, genius – they reseed.” He honestly didn’t believe me. It was funny.

This round is taking 2 full weeks from the start of the first series 4/14 to the potential last game 7, 4/28. That would suggest round two starts 5/1, but I haven’t been able to find such a schedule.

Here’s hoping both Philly and Boston can close out their opponents. I for one don’t want to see either Buffalo or Jersey down the road.

I would have maybe preferred Seidenberg for a 2, but we needed to move a D anyway to make room. So giving up Potsy only opens a roster spot, the 2 was standard fare for the day, and the prospect wasn’t a huge loss. I’ll take that trade every time.

IMO, a lot of his increasing comfort with the Caps’ system started when he was teamed with SMo consistently — they compliment each others’ styles, plus Morissonn is a less skittish player than Corvo. He always played his best for CAR when paired with Gleason, whose profile is similar to Mo’s.

Not sure if its been said (attempting to catch up) but Knuble deserves credit for realizing how little time was left in the period before jumping up on that 2-1 shortie. I’ll bet theres not way he takes that risk if there is 30 more seconds left in the game, because of fear of having a 4-2 going back the other way. As it was, even if they didn’t score, it was unlikely the Habs could have controlled the puck and turned it into an offensive chance the other way. Biggest goal of the season so far in my eyes.

The Carlson Legend Grows

Looks like we’re not the only ones who love this kid:

Today will be the nomination announcements for the 2010 Calder Trophy. If the early playoff results are any indication, perhaps the best player to debut in the 2009/10 season will not be nominated this year. So far in the playoffs, John Carlson of the Washington Capitals has made a claim to being the best rookie in the NHL. Carlson has appeared in all four Washington Capitals games and scored four points from defence. He has a +7 +/- rating in the playoffs so far. This is quite an impressive showing for a rookie.
Carlson will be eligible for the Calder Trophy next season because he only played 22 games this season (and the Calder cut-off is 25). In those 22 games, he logged an ever increasing amount of playing time with six points and a +11 +/-. Carlson is a 20 year old World Junior Championship hero who was a Caps first round pick in 2008. He has the pedigree of a future NHL star and is playing like one so far in the playoffs. He is a very logical front-runner for next year’s Calder Trophy.

He responds just like Lebron. Every time he’s pressured, he elevates his game. I just hope Boudreau doesn’t over-burden him with responsibility. At some point we’ll be reminded that he is pretty young. I hope it won’t be till sometime next year. I wanted to be a little more exact on that so I went on over to Carlson’s wiki page. I guess he plays with a bit of weight behind him?

I’m not certain he’s better than Myers, but man Carlson has blown me away. He and Poti have easily been the Caps’ best pairing so far and he’s been the better of the duo. And, um, that GTG in game 2 was slightly important.

by grapejoos on Apr 22, 2010 5:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Considering Sloan only played 3 games in March & 2-3/4 games in April plus going into a faster paced playoff game cold …. I was impressed with his play overall. Washington’s 3rd goal (which pulled them ahead in the 3rd) was a result of Sloan pinning Gionta to the boards freeing the puck for Semin, who passed it to Ovi for a goal. He had several great plays during the game to free the puck — one mid-ice to Ovi for a scoring chance. On the Moore goal, Flash got beat … and another Montreal player played interference when Sloan went to take him into the boards …. then he beat Corvo as well. The forwards were nowhere to be seen. Varly had an amazing game, but unfortunately didn’t stop an easy back-hand shot that time. The game could easily have been lost if Varly hadn’t been at the top of his game. Go Caps! Let’s finish them off on Friday!

On Gouldie's point that the even-numbered games are most important

Turns out he’s right. From Hockey or Die, the (historical) odds of winning a series based on winning any of the particular games in a series:

    * Game One: 71.7%
    * Game Two: 75.0%
    * Game Three: 60.0%
    * Game Four (All): 71.7%
    * Game Four (Non-Elimination): 67.3%
    * Game Five (All): 72.5%
    * Game Five (Non-Elimination): 56.3%
    * Game Six (All): 71.9%
    * Game Six (Non-Elimination): 30.8%

Work with me, I wanted to use the Nugent reference.

But the odds of winning, historically speaking anyway, with a 2 – 0 lead are over 86%. That’s pretty close to a stranglehold.

From the same Hockey or Die article:

    * Lead 1-0: 71.7%
    * Lead 2-0: 86.5%
    * Lead 3-0: 100%
    * Lead 2-1: 65.0%
    * Lead 3-1: 92.3%
    * Lead 3-2: 87.9%

Words and patterns do spread throughout the community though. No one used to really do that, “BLAH BLAH BLHA BLAH, NO?” “BLAH BLAH BLHA BLAH, YES?” all the time until a few regulars started doing so.

maybe they’re talking about the result of the game, i.e. in game 6’s that don’t win the series.

by Elliotte on Apr 22, 2010 2:15 PM EDT up reply actions

I thought about that. The numbers don’t make sense.

In game four the winning team wins the series 71% of the time. Some of those presumably are teams that sweep. But if “non-elimination” wins are what you suggest, then that would mean teams stave off a sweep 67% of the time. Can that be right?

Watching more games on Slingbox than anyone else!

So the team that wins game 4 wins the series 71% of the time, and (non-elimination, aka 5+ game series) the team that wins game 4 wins 67% of the time.

Because they had to have known it wasn’t broken and the fact that he was going to miss so much time and was so badly hurt was a huge reason AO got the suspension he did. If they said he had a boo boo to his shoulder and would be back in the first round it wouldn’t have been as big a deal. But they played it like it was some possible season-ending injury and thus got the suspension they wanted. It’s not like plenty of people didn’t predict this exact behavior when the NHL started punishing based on injury. It just sucks that there is no recourse for the Caps at this point.

Certainly makes me wonder if the only injuries were to his shoulder and ribs. I’m not a medical person, but isn’t the chance of reinjuring a not fully healed collarbone pretty high? If he got checked hard into the boards or something it could be catastrophic.

Yeah if you rush a collarbone you can re-injure it very easily. Sometimes they don’t even heal right on the first break. It’s a very delicate bone and I don’t think I’ve ever seen someone return to hockey 4 weeks after breaking it.

I had a gymnast fracture her collarbone and she didn’t get released for 10 weeks. The docs were terrified that any fall had the potential to dislodge it, or re-fracture. And she was 12, and we all know how much faster kids heal than adults. And this was about as clean a fracture as one could have on a collarbone, according to her parents. not an injury to screw around with.

I’m not even buying Kovalchuk as the best player on that team, much less it’s emotional leader. Most capable of taking over a game? Maybe, but Parise’s pretty damn good at that, too.

I could buy the Flyers dropping the next one with Carter and Gagne done for the series and the Devils getting their guys away from Pronger and Timmonen (at least a little better) with the home ice tonight, but they Devils haven’t looked very good. That said, they’re not really getting the bounces and that could turn around quick-like.

Absolutely beyond question. That Jordan Staal is a Selke candidate and Zach Parise (or Jonathan Toews) is not boggles my mind. Add in elite offensive capabilities (Parise is comparable in effectiveness as a goal scorer as Kovy is and a better distributor to boot) and it’s not even close.

I would probably look at Zajac before Parise for Selke but whatever. That award is one of the least rigorously determined awards there is. I think Staal wins it this year but he shouldn’t. He’ll earn it one year but I don’t think this is the year. If you aren’t THE GUY your coach puts on the ice when you’re trying to protect a late lead, then how are you the Selke? Staal can’t be trusted to take a faceoff so Crosby has to be out there. Not Selke worthy, IMO.

Zajac might be better, but Parise isn’t far behind. Parise isn’t far behind in GAON/60, plays tougher minutes and more of them, with weaker teammates. The real differentiation is play on the PK (Zajac gets a lot, Parise gets not much, about 35s per game). They’re both elite defensive players, in my opinion.

by Knee high to a duck on Apr 22, 2010 5:34 PM EDT up reply actions

I think the PK should probably be more important than it seems to be in the voting. Zajac definitely deserves credit for that. But with Parise scoring more and playing “tougher minutes” I think it’s fair to consider him.

No, I realize that he’s a beast on the PK and that’s why I think he deserves the nomination and will win a Selke someday. But in the final minute of a one goal game, one of the three Selke candidates won’t be sent out by his coach to take the draw. That’s a big deal to me. I don’t think Staal is so much better at PKing that his inability to win a key draw should be overlooked.

Toews is better on the dot, better on the PK in terms of GAON60 (by a mile, 6+ for Staal versus 2.66 for Toews, granted that Staal plays twice as many PK minutes), better on offense and a guy you would definitely throw out there in the last minute of a close game.

They put up similar 5v5 numbers in terms of +/- on/off ice against similar competition and with similar teammate quality.

John Carlson 8th best prospect per Puck Prospectus. (Forgive me if J.P. already caught this one.)

Caps with 5 of the top 100.

PHI should have had 2 of the top 15 but have zero in the top 100 instead.

I dispute a lot on this list, but it’s nice to see the Caps so well represented. I assume Varlamov is off because he’s played too many NHL games. Eakin probably deserves a look but it’s a competitive list for sure. Carlson should be higher, Filatov and Hodgson should be lower. I just don’t see how Carlson falls that far below Pietrangelo. They have similar size and styles and notwithstanding the WJC top-D award Carlson was just as good if not better in the WJC. Also, Carlson is the same age and further ahead on the curve than Pietrangelo is. Seems like the top of that list is very Canadian heavy after Filatov. Hodgson isn’t getting knocked enough for his injury holdups and Schenn is a nice player but he doesn’t have that same offensive upside as the other top prospects on that list. I also think De Haan was dreadful in the WJC (Canada basically benched him except on the PP) and is no way deserving of being that high.

And it’s weird they say Couture has better puck skills. I think Wilson is the better offensive prospect but Couture will end up being good. Couture is ripped on by a lot of SJS fans but, again, with his CHL past he gets the benefit of the doubt.

I hate listening to people's dreams. It is like flipping through a stack of photographs. If I'm not in any of them and nobody is having sex, I just don't care.

Wilson can already finesse the puck better than 3/4 of our roster. He’s got the total package, similar to Doughty on defense. Whether he puts it together is yet to be seen, but he’s a better prospect than Radulov was IMO.

Wilson needs to work on his skating if he’s going to be a consistent top-line player. Right now, he’s just not explosive enough.

The hell? Just noticed Taylor Beck at 19. This is interesting.

Yeah that’s a bit of a shock. Wasn’t he drafted as a 19 year old? I’d be worried that he might have beaten up on some less mature players.

He’s 18, drafted last draft. He’s in the CHL though and was the highest scoring RW in the land. Not bad?

Not really a country fan, but I guess it beats The Stray Caps.

I just don’t like it because Chicago fans already think we in-breed. Oh well, fuck ’em.

It’s fine. A gangster rap song probably wouldn’t speak to the target audience.

I love the little kid with the bowl cut about 10 seconds in. I guess people in Nashville are stuck in the 90s? That’s all I have to say about the video because I couldn’t stand to watch it for more than 10 seconds.
