Too many times to count this season the Caps have taken the foot off of the pedal after gaining a sizable lead of some type only to let the other team sneak back into the game. Having said that, I haven’t remember a loss as a result but in the playoffs, a la game 2, it can happen.
Last night, it happened again, the difference this time was that it did stop and order was restored and whatever door was slightly left open for the Habs was closed, shut and locked.
I hope they realize its ok to win 7-0, its their job to stop you.

it went on for about five minutes. One goal, then we took that penalty. The PK shut the door – great momentum-killing PK, and then the boys locked it down, smartened up, and went back to their game. They did let up, but they caught it and didn’t let it go anywhere, which I thought was promising.

I think the style of play in the 3rd might have had something to do with being down 2 Dmen. Kind of hard to keep it pedal to the metal when you’re missing bodies.

No excuses. These guys were all 20+ min a night guys at every other level of hockey. They can handle the workload.
That being said, I thought the Caps were playing it pretty safe for most of the 3rd, not a lot of home runs or trying to spring someone on a breakaway.
What's ya major, dude?
I don’t know about that. It isn’t junior, where a guy like Doughty can play 40 mins a night or whatever. In the playoffs you’re supposed to give 110% for each 40 second (or 60 second for the Young Guns) shift, then go to the bench. Great skaters like Green and Carlson and ShaMo probably can handle the increase every now and then, but might be tougher for, say, Jeff Schultz to do the same.

If ShaMo and Corvo left early in the second or the first, I would agree. But only Carlson’s TOI was drastically up at 20:19. Schultz played 18+, Poti 23+, and Green nearly 27.
For only a period and a half, I don’t think the extra shifts for the D-men negatively affected the team’s play.
What's ya major, dude?
Maybe against MTL the effect was less visible. But I don’t doubt that against a harder forechecking team that puts an emphasis on finishing checks on opposing defensemen, that the Dmen in increased minutes that they’re not used to will begin to “feel it.” Carlson I’d be most worried about considering he doesn’t even have a full pro season under his belt (just parts of two that add up to one season kinda) and might not be fully prepared, but he certainly seems to be up to the task.

They obviously can handle the workload and did. But if there is a choice between playing aggressively and playing it safe when protecting a 3 goal lead and issing 2 Dmen, I’d pick safe and smart. A win is a win.

Love Fehr-sie
My brother and I were re-hashing after game 3. He saw how Fehr had only 9:20 of ice time. He mentioned he thought Fehr was always awesome when he was out there. I threw out that he’s top 5 in the league in goals per sixty minutes of play time. His immediate reaction?
“So why does Boudreau always seem like he doesn’t want to play him? Did Fehr sleep with his daughter or something?”

this may sound stupid, but is it possible that fehr is more effective playing only 10 minutes per game vs. 17-18 minutes?
also, fehr is one of the few forwards who gets very little pp time and no PK time (bmo and chimmera are others). that impacts TOI. there were 18 minutes of either PP or PK time in last nights game. if you dont play on one of those units, your time is going to suffer…

Very possible, but...
Fehr could easily be effective only in short bursts. I think the more likely possibility, though, is that he’s better on the RW and he has to slot behind Knuble and Semin. Flash gets more time because he’s splitting the left with Laich…well after Ovi takes half the game.
And he gets some PP time but you’re right, not enough that his total TOI doesn’t suffer.

I swear when BB called that timeout he was saying “Let’s run it up” while giving the thumbs up. Anyone else catch that or have video? Maybe that’s why BB hates Fehr so much, he’s always doing the opposite of what BB tells him! Or he banged his sister. That’s my second theory.
Who says BB hates Fehr?
I’ve never seen any evidence to support this other than lower TOI than other players.

Hate is definitely strong, he never talks badly about him really, but he clearly doesn’t favor him. I am on Behind the Net right now to see if I can confirm my suspiscion that Fehr is has the lowest PP time in the league of all 20 goal scorers.
Is it possible that the lower ice time is related to Fehr’s injury issues?

I mentioned in the Fanshot with Halak’s shaking hand that in his press conference after Saturday night’s game, BB was asked about the "scorers" and he went on and mentioned Nicky, Backs, Ovi, and Carlson, but not poor Eric. It seemed odd at the time, since it was Fehr that put them on the scoresheet to begin with.
"It hit me on the pants. I had protection. It felt good. Why? I wanted to win."
Trying to explain the unexplainable
I believe – and correct me if I’m wrong – that the idea is this: Fehr is our 2nd most productive forward per 60 minutes TOI. So logic would suggest playing him more. Yet he was healthy scratched sometimes during the regular season and he regularly has one of the lowest TOI of our forwards. So we’re just looking for some explanation why this is. I don’t think any of us thinks Boudreau really ACTUALLY hates Fehr…but there’s gotta be SOME reason he doesn’t get more TOI, doesn’t there?
And that’s part of where all the Flash/Fehr comparisons keep going and where some of the Flash-hate keeps coming from. Because Flash seems to get more TOI than he should (given his well documented poor FO, Corsi, GAON/60, etc. stats) and Fehr a lot less (given his great stats).
One day I will come up with the greatest signature...it'll be awesome...
Yea, the mysteries compound themselves — his favor for Flash and his stifling of Fehr. To be honest, I can understand the former much more than the latter. Pushing Flash to play with on Semin’s line has implications on the roster that I’m sure BB really likes (but maybe less so this time of year.) That has a ripple effect of Fehr on the 3rd line, and BB probably thinks Fehr is more suited to play that role anyway… and so his minutes just play themselves out like this. Maybe we make it all out to be more than it is…
But still, where is the PP time?
ES TOI from last night, by line:
Even strength only:
Line 2 (Flash, Belanger, Semin) 34:09
Line 1 (Ovie, Backstrom, Knuble) 32:19
Line 4 (Chimera, Gordon, Bradley) 29:42
Line 3 (Laich, BMo, Fehr) 26:57
Odd. And it’s not like that 3rd line received less ES ice time because any of the players needed to recover from playing on any of the special teams units.
the fact that Bruce runs out his energy and shutdown guys more often than the third scoring line is not really a surprise, but it doesn’t explain Fehr’s ice time over the long haul.
Great. Now I have to change my name to "Jaromir meet Alex".

brooks played over 5:30 on the pp and 3:17 on the PK. bmo had over a minute of pp time. maybe that’s it. with brooks out there playing the PP and PK, that line get split up. need to let brooksie rest before the regular line shift goes out.
for example, i think the caps started the third on the PP. brooks was out ther for that shift over a minute. so by the time their regular line comes out its over 3 minutes into the game.
eh, its a mystery for sure but i’m guessing a lot has to do with his lack of special teams time and the impact that has on his regular line.

On Fehr
my hypothesis on fehr is this: With more ice time, he would disappear. He didn’t go into high traffic areas and got out muscled by opponents in the corners. Now, with less ice time, Fehr is playing balls out.
My line idea was Semin-Belanger-Fehr. For a tinkerer, I don’t understand how BB hasn’t tried this lineup. Maybe Fehr isn’t one of his favorites. Eitherway, we plainly see (and Elliot Friedman seems to agree) that Fehr has been statistically better than Flash.
Flash has the longest leash on the team.
by The Jade Donkey on Apr 20, 2010 3:58 PM EDT via mobile reply actions
Two righties, but your point is taken. I’m not sure Fehr would disappear necessarily, however the idea that BB does it to fire him up is a valid one. No matter what the case may be inside of BB’s head, Fehr has produced tremendously in his limited role, and there will be absolutely no excuse not to play him more next year.
By “righties” I’m assuming you mean they shoot right? Because Semin came into the league playing mostly LW, didn’t he? I think he was switched to RW mainly for the Ovechkin – Backstrom – Semin line combo.
Also, TJD, I also think the Semin – Belanger – Fehr line would be a good combination to try, but Bruce seems to only consider either Laich or Flash for that wing, though. Fehr would make that line a little more like the first line (although Belanger is obviously no Backstrom).
The eagle never lost so much time as when he submitted to learn from the crow.
I think this is completely valid. Playing somebody more doesn’t necessarily increase their productivity. It’s certainly possible that it would plummet (or rise… but not at a linear rate), although disappear is perhaps a bit strong.
Did you see where Fehr was when he scored? Attacking the crease.
Did you see where Fehr was when Laich scored? Crease.
Do you realize that Fehr is very adept at drawing penalties? You don’t do that by avoiding contact.
Of E.Fehr’s 21 goals this year more than half are within 10ft of the net, high traffic areas. I’ve just looked at all of his goals on NHL.com.

Big difference from last year when most of his shots were from 40 feet away with no screen.

The good thing about Fehr is that he occasionally can score from 40 ft as well. Helluva wrister.

1) This is off-topic. Please take it to the Clips, or perhaps the recap.
2) You need to back up claims like this with either a credible source or some killer analysis. You’re not contributing anything at all with a one-liner that’s completely unverifiable.
3) You’re not doing anything for your own credibility by posting this, give some thought to it for the future, hey?

Hey, did anyone notice that Elliotte Friedman said that Eric Fehr was in danger of being lost to an offer sheet in the off season? I’m sure it’ll be in the clips tomorrow, but it seemed pertinent here.
"Ovechkin, what is good in life?"
"To crush your enemies. To see them driven before you. And to hear the lamentations of their captain."
i think it was discussed in Clip today
