I can’t think of any qualities that Stamkos is superior to Sanya in so I can’t think how he could be the better goal scorer. Next year teams will have scouted Stamkos and his team better and disable the one or two power play moves the Lighting have?
The same things were said about Ovechkin.

Stamkos might get there, but you have to wonder how. Tampa isn’t the Caps, with a Nicklas Backstrom or Alexander Semin to take the heat off him. Martin St. Louis has turned into Stamkos’ personal valet, setting him up for a lot of those goals (Marty already has a career high in assists). But he’s 34. And Vincent Lecavalier does not seem to be the player he was a few years ago. The Lightning do not appear to have a lot of promise in the pipeline at forward.
Stamkos has the talent, but he might be a one-man show in his formative years. Is he going to get the help Ovechkin gets to hit those high notes?
If you've read this far...seek help.
That remains to be seen. In his first 2 years Ovechkin didn’t have much help either. Stamkos has definitely had a better supporting cast on O in his first 2 years than Ovechkin had.
My point is to simply show my skepticism towards the idea that teams will miraculously be able to stop him. It’s not like Stamkos is Cheechoo. He has the skill, speed and shot to make a play himself. He doesn’t need Jumbo Joe for everything (though having St. Louis certainly doesn’t hurt his production).

Think the Cooke hit on Vinny is what’s done him in? You’re right; he’s definitely not the same.

Stamkos is like a highly touted young pitcher in baseball who mows through opposing teams for a while before they’ve gotten the book on him or really game-planned for him. Right now he’s catching teams much more by surprise than he will in the not-too-distant future.
Don’t get me wrong, I think he’s one hell of a talent with a great career ahead of him. But taking the season he’s had and making ridiculous assumptions based on it isn’t going to look too smart a few years down the road.

Since you’ve been around longer than I have – were the same things said about Ovechkin when he first started?
Hanlon's Razor: Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.
I think there was that element, to an extent, especially since Ovi is a goal-scorer and the thinking was that he’d be more dependent on his center to generate scoring opportunities. And I do think that, to an extent, there are times when AO does get a little predictible and easier (though never easy) to defend. How many times did he try to carry the puck from the left boards across last night, for example?
Maybe I’m underestimating Stammer, but I don’t think I’m quite ready to say he’s going to be a better goal scorer than a guy who has put up historic goal-scoring numbers in his first five years in the League.

Maybe its just me, but whenever I see a Stamkos goal, they all look exactly the same. The big cross ice pass to set him up for the shot from one knee. I’ll be more convinced when he can “grow” beyond that once teams start to take it away.
Ovechkin was different because all his goals were about power. He was just something that hit the league that people hadn’t seen for a long time. Stamkos just doesn’t seem to have that same thing of being “overpowering”, although he’s still young enough to where he could get there, but I don’t see him adding that element to his game. Not a knock on Stamkos, but he’s just not that kind of player.

Ovi used to live on those types of shots until teams starting defensing against it, especially on the penalty kill. Stamkos is the same way and I’ll be real curious to see what he can come up with once the opposition starts preventing those plays. From what I’ve seen, Stamkos has a real knack for finding open ice. Ovechkin creates his own open space which makes him far more dangerous. When Stamkos can repeat what he’s done this year for the next three seasons, come and talk to me.
Agreed, but you’ve gotta admit that the fact that Stamkos will likely have more goals in his second season in the League than Ovechkin did in his soph season is a pretty damn impressive accomplishment.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Right, but Ovechkin was the same age as Stamkos when he had his monster rookie season. His sophomore season was his “worst” season, both offensively and defensively.

Not diminishing Stamkos’ season, but Ovi’s second season came after a monster rookie year. Everyone knew about Alex, so he wasn’t sneaking up on anyone and he had virtually no supporting cast. When the opposing team faced the Caps, there #1,2 & 3 assignments were to stop Ovechkin. Stamkos didn’t create that kind of fanfare in his rookie season, so I think he caught a lot of teams by surprise early on. Also Stamkos is playing on a team with St. Louis and Vinny, so opponents can’t try and defense him the way they could Alex. Not taking anything away from Stamkos, but I think he’d be hard pressed to get 46 goals playing for the ‘06-’07 Caps.
Agreed. The 06-07 Caps featured such stalwarts as Kris Beech, Jakub Klepis, and Jiri Novotny.

Finding open ice is more finding an area where you can cleanly recieve a pass and get a scoring chance. Creating space is more active. It involves doing things like bullrushing defenders, which Ovechkin excels at.

Brett Hull found open ice. Cam Neely created space.

Can throw this in the “who cares, a boring goal and a pretty goal are still worth….. … ONE goal” bag, tie it up to a brick, and throw it in the potomac
Its not just a question of “style” in terms of the goals looking the “sam”, but if the guy is scoring exactly the same way pretty much every single time he scores a goal, that’s going to be pretty easy for the opposition to stop after a while, no?

Brett Hull scored a lot of his goals the same way — slap shots from the circles. He did pretty well. (Except when he played with Gretzky.)
I think you guys are selling Stamkos short. He isn’t some flash-in-the-pan player who just came out of nowhere. He was the first overall pick in the draft.
He was the first overall pick in the draft.
So was Patrik Stefan.

Stamkos does remind me a lot of Hull, and there’s no knock on him for being that type of player. It just makes it so you have to have a guy like an Adam Oates to keep feeding him and to get the most out of him.

And so was Lemieux, Ovechkin, Crosby, et al. I’m saying that as a first overall pick, he obviously has talent. He’s obviously chosen to work hard at it and become a good player. Stefan never did.
And Hull played only 3 seasons with Oates.

True, but that’s when he put up his most ridiculous stats. Same could be said of Cam Neely, however.
Adam Oates was the shit.

Sorry, but comparing Stamkos to Stefan is pretty weak. His point was that Stamkos isn’t some bolt from the blue – the kid’s clearly got talent. And it’s not just this year, either. Once he got a chance to actually play last year, he was on fire.
I agree with the Hull comparisons for his power play one-timers, but Stamkos has better wheels than Hull could ever dream of. Hull was a fat little out-of-shape piece of crap (often by his own admission) with a great shot and a phenomenal sense of where to set up.
There's a fine line between arrogance and ignorance and only I manage to erase that line.
I wasn’t comparing Stamkos to Stefan. The point of what I said is that while he was a first overall pick, that’s not a guarantee to sure-fire success as the quote implied.

Ok, but first overall in a historically weak draft is a little different. Even at the time there were doubts about Stefan. . . Stamkos, not so much.

Well…I didn’t mean to single it out as Stefan only. I could have said “Alexandre Daigle” since there were NO doubts about how good that guy was going to be. Stefan was just the first name that popped into my head. The general thesis of “just because you’re drafted first doesn’t mean you’re going to be a great NHLer” remains.

Tavares and Hedman were pretty much the consensus number 1 and 2 guys in some combination right? If they had taken Duchene, and Tavares was putting up Duchenian numbers and leading Colorado to the playoffs right now, they would be getting ripped to high heaven.
Its not like Tavares is having a really bad year though compared to Duchene.
Tavares 21/26/47
Duchene 23/30/53
Look at their QAULCOMPS:
Duchene: -.056
Tavares: .021
And QUALTEAMS:
Duchene: -.0007
Tavares: -.025
Tavares plays with much worse teammates against better comp than Duchene. If the Isles were as good as Colorado is, Tavares’ numbers would be just as good, if not better, than Duchene’s.

It genuinely surprised me when I looked it up. For all the talk you hear of Duchene’s addition to Colorado, Tavares has been just as good for NYI. And gets pretty much none of the attention Duchene gets.
I guess that’s what playing on a good team gets you, no?
Just for shits n’ giggles:
Steven Stamkos in his rookie year last year put up 23/23/46. His QUALCOMP was -0.029 and his QUALTEAM was .030
Mason won the Calder last year, but Kane in 07-08 put up 21/51/72 with a .072 QUALCOMP and .0153 QUALTEAM.

Power play one-timers and the ability to find those little spots in the zone. My vague memory (I was very young during Brett Hull’s dominant years) is that Brett could fly at the beginning of those years, then got fatter and slower at the end.

Too early to call IMHO. Stamkos is definitely good. I’m not putting a ceiling on him yet. 2 years from now I think we’ll have a much better gauge on how good the kid can/will be. Certainly, he like anyone else, is helped or hurt by linemates and team. However, you can’t help but be impressed by his scoring touch. He has plenty of time to grow and diversify his game. I’ll be interested to see if they ever trade some of the vets on that roster how he does.

Agree with the fact that it’s too early. Specifically, the question that has yet to be answered is whether this is a career year for Stamkos, or a typical year. When AO got 60+, from this distance it looks like that was a career year.
Stamkos might be a perrenial 50-goal guy. But he might also be a 40-goal guy with a bit of an outlier this year.
I will say that he’s a real talent.

One thing to note, Stamkos’s shooting pct is 17.7% this year. Not in the ridiculously high category, but probably not sustainable over the long hall. At a 15% clip, he’d have 39 goals this year.

Right, I was contesting daddyo’s assessment that it wasn’t sustainable. With as many shots has he’s taken (260) and his accuracy, I think that it is. Honestly, a 55-60 goal season would not surprise me from him in the future, especially if St. Louis stays healthy on his line.

If it’s banking on St. Louis, he better get it done soon. Marty is 34 or 35 years old and won’t be around at an elite level too much longer.
There are (very) rare players that can sustain 15%+ shooting percentages. Although, looking it up now, even Ilya Kovalchuk’s career mark is 14.8%. He does have seasons where he jumps up to 17 or 18, though.

Stamkos has the talent, but because of one breakout year where TB’s ENTIRE PP philosophy is getting the puck to him for a one-timer, and watching him cash in for 1/2 of his goal total will NOT enable him to become a better scorer than Ovie.
1/4 of Ovie’s goals are 5v4. Just about 1/2 of Stamkos’ are 5v4. When opposing PKers start to shadow him, he’ll drop back down to the 30 goal realm.

The hit from last night pales in comparison to the other two in both severity and intent. It was sure as hell dirty and a hit to the head but trying to compare it to the other two is nothing short of exaggeration.
last night’s hit pales in comparison because of the force and injury involved weren’t there. That doesn’t mean the headshot was any less blatant. Blatant means obvious… not foreceful
My thoughts exactly. The actual intent to hit the head was much more clear (especially once the elbow/forearm comes up) but the force of the impact (and thus the likelihood of it causing serious injury) was much less.

just not sure how that hit was not an elbowing penalty, especially with the ref watching the whole thing. that hit is not part of the new, blind-side back pressure to the head rule. thats a good old fashioned elbow to the bean. MP’s head was up, although clearly lower than most players heads. just dont understand how the ref doesnt call that in light of all the head hit discussions.
and is it my imagination or is 26 always the guy on the ice when something like this goes down?
Just trying to capture the spirit of the thing...
What really grinds my gears is that even prior to the new headshot rule, THERE WERE RULES ON THE BOOKS THAT APPLIED in each situation except the Booth hits. We didn’t need a rule, we just needed to enforce it. Ditto here. Elbowing. Hit to the head. Roughing (his arm IS extended…) Whatever.
Yes, I’ve been saying that same thing all along. They could try enforcing the rules they already had, instead of badly fast-tracking a new one that they’ll also ignore…

How about instead of the NHL getting new rules, they get new refs? The ones they have now are consistently inconsistent.
Ha. As a fairly respected official I can assure you of 2 things:
1) Officials will always miss stuff, or interpret things in real time differently than they would with the benefit of replay. Rarely will
2) Most referees are terrible. If you think the NHL officials are bad, go watch an ECHL game.

Good points. I think the problem (and I know I’m not the first to say this) is that it’s all such a black box. We’re told that the league reviews every game and discusses bad calls with the officials afterward—but we don’t know what they’re looking at or what comes out of those discussions. Of course officials are human. What I want is evidence that they’re working to improve and taking appropriate steps when there’s no evidence of improvement.
And that’s not even getting into the issue of supplementary discipline. We might have that conversation again today depending on what Colin Campbell says…

The one in the first period of the Vancouver/LA game? Yeah it was pretty brutal. Halpy was okay though (and Glass got jumped by Greene from LA). They gave him two minutes for charging after some deliberation.

tough hit. halpy was in the corner and leaning for the puck when glass mashed him into the boards. halpy’s head hit the dasher. charging call was a bit dubious since glass was gliding into him. i think the refs felt like they had to call something. doubt its suspendable since halpy put himself in a bad position. questionable whether it was a total hit to the back though.
really glad halpy got up and played. looked bad.
Just trying to capture the spirit of the thing...
Difference is Halpern didn’t put himself in that position because he saw the hit coming. He was playing the puck and Glass had every opportunity to make the safe play. Again, though. Guy gets up and skates away, no suspension coming.
dont think it matters whether halpy put himself in that position cause he saw the hit or not. he put himself in a posiiton so a hit that would otherwise be legal/clean turned out to look very bad and likely to cause injury.
glass certainly could have turned away from the hit, but you can say that about a lot of hits. i think if halpy is standing up this is just a loud hit. upon looking at the replay it seems pretty clear it was not from the back but on the side.
agreed that it is probably not suspendable. if koci doesnt get suspended for a clear shot in the back on green then glass doesnt get suspended for this.
Just trying to capture the spirit of the thing...
Only slightly tangentially, Ovi gave a nice stick tap heads up to a Thrasher last night just before he stapled him to the boards. Very considerate, I’d say.

On Stamkos and Armstrong
First Stamkos: Yes, that kid is gonna be a great scorer; he has a wicked wrist shot, a superb slapshot, and his accuracy is quite astounding. The difference is this: He’s having a breakout season and playing teams that are still putting the emphasis on defending St Louis and Vinny. When teams start focusing on him, like next year, he’s going to start getting roughed up and he’s going to have to play and shoot while banged up all the time. Thats were the true test comes in. Selanne scored a billion goals (seriously, a billion) his rookie year, but he never did that again, nor did he even come close to that many (million, tops). Ovechkin can not only score loads of goals, he can do while double and triple teamed by the best the opposition has to offer game in game out. Defenders are aware of him because they might not only get burned with a goal against, they might also get leveled physically. In order for Stamkos to be a better scorer than Ovechkin, he has to be able to surmount the obstacles presented by the other teams best players. This year, the lowly Bolts haven’t faced that type of determined adversity; there’s were “gimme” games (justifiably or not). The Bolts may have shown up against the caps, but whether or not they showed up vs other teams to the same extent is debatable. Next year, Stamkos will be on the radar. Then we’ll see. By the way, Tocchet has NOT impressed me as a coach. That team is better than they’re coaching staff.
Armstrong: the arm got up and you’re responsible for your arm. The most concerning bit is that Armstrong says the ref allegedly told him that Perreault tried to duck out of the way. Whether or not he did, (i don’t think so), Armstrongs arm came UP, and if you lead with your shoulder, your arm wouldn’t be extended. Thats the clincher. His arm extended, and those shows intent. Was he trying to decapitate him? No, he was getting revenge for being bloodied by erskine earlier, and he tried to take a big piece and went to far. Suspension worthy? Only because the refs gave 2 minutes and negated it because Morrisson ‘talked’ to armstrong about it. It should have been 5. No game, no extra 2, a 5 minute powerplay and message sent. The problem is the caliber of refs in the NHL, something the league doesn’t seem prepared to fix.
Half the refs seem to be retiring after this year, so maybe that will help. Who knows.. Nasty, deliberate hit, though.

It’s not just this franchise, it’s any franchise. Being the best team in the entire League over 82 games is something and shouldn’t be glossed over just because the team has bigger goals.
You’re a bit out of line here, CB.

Out of line in what way? That I’m wrong, or I crossed some boundary?
I guess I should clarify. I don’t think that a big deal should be made out of being the best regular season team. Just one man’s opinion. So you get a number 1 seed. Yay. As we saw with the Sharks last year and teams before them, it doesn’t always matter. A team that backs into the 1 seed by virtue of an awesome regular season should be given credit, yes, but they may run into trouble playing an 8 seed thats had to play their best hockey for the last month.
We see it in the NCAA tournament, too, with the top seeds. Its a luxury, and one you should be proud of. But its not the end all, be all that some think (not saying you are) and there’s a reason the playoffs are called the second season.

If only for guaranteeing home-ice advantage throughout the playoffs, it means something.
The Caps are 28-5-5 at home. The next best team is Vancouver at 28-8-2, and Vancouver has a built-in home-ice advantage from the ridiculous travel it takes for most teams to get out there.
The Caps have generally looked like crap the last two years on their West Coast swings. Ensuring that 4/7 games will be played in the friendly confines of the Verizon Center is no small feat.
Moreover, just as every year there can only be one Stanley Cup Champion, there can only be one President’s Trophy winner. That in itself makes it somewhat meaningful, especially for a franchise and fan base that has never won it before.
There's a fine line between arrogance and ignorance and only I manage to erase that line.

DING DING DING! For all the records and historic firsts and general hockey history we’ve been extremely fortunate to watch the past 3 seasons, there’s something REALLY exciting, to me, to see the best record in the NHL within the Caps’ grasp. For what it’s worth, I’m not sure enough Caps fans truly appreciate how amazing our comeback against the Rangers was last year. You could be a Caps fan for a hundred years and you’re far, FAR more likely to see us win a couple Stanley Cups than you are to see us crawl back out of a 3-1 hole again.

As of fall 2008
According to whowins.com, there have been 25 instances in the NHL quarterfinal round where the team with home-ice advantage has gone down 3 games to 1. Only once has that team won the series (as of fall 2008, so I guess the Caps would be #2). Excluding the Caps’ example, that leaves a 4% chance of victory.
If you assume at the start of every playoffs that each team has a 1/16 chance of winning the Cup (a stretch, I know), that’s a 6.25%.
So for every year the Caps make the playoffs, you’re more likely to see them win the Stanley Cup than do what they did last year.
In total, there have only been 3 (Caps not included) 3-1 comebacks in the history of the Quarterfinals, and 20 in the history of the whole NHL playoffs (again, last year’s Caps not included).
In terms of how common an occurrence they are, they’re about 1/4 as common as handing out the Cup, which has occurred about 82 times since the inception of the “modern” NHL in 1926-27.
It was freaking rare.

Thanks, but it took 2 seconds and I didn’t even go past the first page of Google results. I’m sure there are more examples.
I, for one, can’t wait to see the Caps raise a President’s Trophy banner (if it happens). It is a tremendous accomplishment.

I would, because one doesn’t necessarily go with the other automatically, as we all know by now. I think you skip divisional and conference banners if you win the President’s Trophy, though.
My ability to post is only surpassed by my ability to pinch pennies.
I think the you hang a President’s Trophy banner in place of any regular season accomplishment banner (Division Champ, EC Regular Season Champ), then add any playoff-acquired banners (EC Champ, Cup). Although I must admit that a conference regular season banner seems odd to me (see Wings ’03-04 above).

Sellouts, schmellouts. Are we the NHL attendance champions?
Russian Machine very rarely breaks. Oh and f**k Brooks Orpik.
Not until
a) VC gets bigger
b) The Caps can sell out 100%+ of their seats

I don’t think you caught the snark there.
Russian Machine very rarely breaks. Oh and f**k Brooks Orpik.
Nah, I did. I just wanted to point out that some teams have 100%+ attendance, which, by the way, is possible…how?
Considering the margin in terms of percent is pretty thin, your statement about attendance isn’t that far-fetched.
No banner for it though. :(

Some teams have standing room only, which doesn’t count towards max capacity.

Chicago and Detroit being two of those places, off the top of my head. I’m sure there are others.

A little magic....
Magic number and playoff picture time! (Might as well combine both into a single thread.)
Eastern Conference
WSH (z) – BOS
BUF (x) – MTL
PIT (x) – PHI
NJD (x) – OTT (x)
Still contending: ATL (2 points out, 4 GR) and NYR (4 points out, 6 GR) (it’d take a miracle for NYR to make it)
Western Conference
SJS (x) – COL
CHI (x) – LAK
VAN – DET
PHX (x) – NSH
Still contending: CGY (2 points out, 5 GR)

Magic Number for the Caps to clinch the President’s Trophy is down to 3.

Whoops, should add the magic numbers in here. The team in parentheses is the team that holds that magic number.
EAST
WSH: 3 for President’s Trophy (SJS)
Conference is locked up (WSH); Southeast division is locked up (WSH)
NJD: 11 for Atlantic Division (PIT) – note, PIT leads the division but NJD has a game in hand, so NJD controls right now
BUF: 4 for Northeast Division (they need to win outright) (OTT)
WEST
SJS: 5 for division, 10 for conference (CHI)
CHI: 4 for division (tiebreaker), 5 to win outright) (DET)
VAN: 5 for division (tiebreaker, 6 to win outright) (COL)
Hanlon's Razor: Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.
Wonder if Pittsburgh is rehashing one of the 6 beatdowns they took against that Devils squad. Zero chance that team is getting back to the finals this year.
Russian Machine very rarely breaks. Oh and f**k Brooks Orpik.
Has anybody noticed that Ottawa is only 3 points behind Los Diablos de Nueva Jersey in the conference standings?
(Yeah gang, we have to watch out for the 4th place team, especially if it’s not NJ or Pitt which means that someone really got hot.)

How crazy is it that the Caps have locked up the Eastern Conference and no other team has even won their division?!

Yes, he played for the Capitals this season, that’s the Edinburgh Capitals; season ended about a week ago.
Another player on that birthday list (same age) once wore a Caps jersey and won the Calder Cup with the Bears in ‘06, too, …Joey Tenute; he’s playing in Germany
I’m really sick of going to practice and having people not know who the players are. Someone today claimed there was no 53.

Stolen fromt he hershey 4/3 thread
Not sure where to put his, but an fyi, for Caps fans, a bit more of a debate what to do related to not knowing the Caps schedule and the possibility there will be a game on that Friday night, but to those that live up there and/or want to attend the early Hershey playoff games…
Hershey home playoff games 1 and 2 tickets are on sale as of this morning
Game 1: Wednesday, April 14 at 7:00 p.m.
Game 2: Friday, April 16 at 7:00 p.m.

When I went to practice in December, he was talking to his Russian buddies and not signing for the fans so I went up to him and said Pozhaluĭsta (Please) and a few other things in Russian. The look of confused surprise was priceless.

To an extent, I feel sorry for them. But they also knew what they might be getting themselves into when they pursued NHL careers.
correct me if I’m wrong, but aren’t there sneaky side exits and a gated garage section that they could use if they really didn’t want to be harassed?
