Was there something in one of the above links that adds to the hate. Or is this more of a general thing?

Too pricey and likely to stay. He’s basically their captain and leading scorer. I’ve always liked him, but the Caps can’t afford him.

You have to do what you have to do. He talked a little trash to get his team fired up and maybe get into the head of Theodore. Maybe it worked. I actually think he’s a pretty good player. He’s backing up his talk with a pretty good series so far. Time for us to shut him up.

I assume you’re referring to Theo in Montreal, but figured I’d point this out anyway. Theo’s 2009-10 splits:
Home: 14-2-4/3.10/.901
Road: 16-5-3/2.53/.920
Varly, on the other hand…
Home: 9-2-2/2.06/.921
Road: 6-2-4/3.05/.899

And the only time Theo played in Montreal with the Caps was coming in off the bench after Neuvirth got pulled. His numbers in MTL are almost worthless for this debate.

Not saying that at all. Just pointing it out in the face of the “can’t start Theo in Montreal” sentiment (though I recognize that Montreal isn’t any other road game for Theo).
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
No matter what Bruce has decided, it’s pretty much a no-win until the game actually starts. The media and the internet are going to parse everything said and not said. The next 10 hours are going to be soooo long.
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
If Bruce had any hair left, he’d lose it over this decision. Originally, I said no way Theo starts in Montreal but after a day to mull it over, I’m leaning towards Jose getting the nod. What tipped the scales for me is the fact that with the series tied, if Bruce goes with Jose tonight and the Caps lose, he can go to Varly who seems to thrive in the role of savior. If he starts Varly tonight, it’s hard not to imagine that Theo’s confidence won’t be shaken a bit. Should the Caps lose, throwing Theo in on Wednesday in a must-win situation in a crazy Bell Centre is a far more dicey proposition.
I never voted in yesterday’s poll, because I’d keep reading all the arguments each way, and would find myself swayed in either direction at times. The psychology of the decision is headache inducing. I think what you’re saying here makes a great deal of sense. The only question if you do that is, do you pull Theo right away if he gives up a goal on the first shot?
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
No. Goalies can’t play thinking that one goal gets them yanked. That’s a recipe for disaster.

Agreed. I don’t know how Bruce gets himself past “I’ve started Theo three times in the playoffs and he hasn’t won once. Varly, on the other hand, has won eight games for me.”

Wow I never looked at it that way….that’s pretty damning history for Theo.

Sophie had a much easier choice, but I think that when Bruce makes his decision what his options are should they lose game three has to be a big factor.
My opinion on it is solely based on the venue, any other city I’d start Theo. If Theo follows trend and poops the bed early and gets pulled again then you have pretty muh effectively eliminated Theo for the rest of the playoffs.

I don’t like how the only view we seem to take of it is it could be so hard for him to play in Montreal with those fans in his home town after the year he’s had, when at the same time it could be the motivation factor of a life time.

That’s not what I’m referring to. I’m fine if you want to say that Varly is the better goalie, but to say Theo shouldn’t start because there’s potential for him to flame out mentally is crazy, because there’s probably just as equal a chance for him to cherish the chance to play in his home province against those fans with everything going on. The things that cause us to mentally quit and mentally be very motivated are separated by a thin line.

From what Plekanec said subsequently, he was actually misquoted and taken out of context, which knowing how the media operates, I admittedly find very likely. It happens all the time, because all the media is really looking for is soundbytes and they jump on you the first chance they get. With that said, the misquote later grew into a team joke with Theo’s “Tomas Jagr’” comments.
"In the depths of winter, I learned there was in me an invincible summer" ~Albert Camus
Right. In fact, no one has any audio of the original Pleks quote, and the guy who supposedly got the quote (Francois Gagnon) later said that he was just relaying it and hadn’t heard it himself. So yeah. No real “there” there.

I dig a lot of the work at EOTP. Yesterday’s tin foil hat posts about the referees was kind of funny, as was this quote from the goal by goal breakdown
Cammalleri appears to slash and break Ovechkin’s stick in the Capital’s end and a penalty is immediately called. (See note below).
Note: The slash call on Cammalleri happens fast, but with referrence to the replay and freeze frame screen shots like this one below, one can see that Cammalleri’s stick never leaves the ice. As Ovechkin comes up against him, he does a bit of a jump around and they bump together. Ovechkin does a good sell with his arms raised, but his stick is broken two and a half feet up the shaft, where Cammalleri’s stick remained on the ice. Them’s the breaks, no pun intented!
Ovechkin’s stick just exploded while he was carrying the puck? Not buying it. Had Ovi been taking a shot one could argue that Cammalleri got a raw deal but that was an obvious slashing call. The freeze frame they used was not helpful in any way shape or form. Very weak argument.
Because now I can justify browsing and commenting during the work day with the argument that I am promoting my business.

First off, that pun quite clearly was intended. And it’s horrible.
Second, do they buy tin foil in bulk in Montreal? The level of outrage over the Knuble screen is unbelievable. And yet, I haven’t heard any complaint about Green bringing down whoever it was in OT game 1, no penalty shot awarded.
I guess if Montreal loses, it MUST be the refs’ fault! Yeah, sure. The Caps being a team that so often has calls go their way… /snark
You had me at no problem.
Did you notice when the Montreal Canadiens were up big in their game against the Washington Capitals and were threatening to take a 2-0 series lead against the league’s most promoted team and most promoted player in Alex Ovechkin, they suddenly ran into a series of highly questionable penalties.

I’m not saying either way, just b/c I don’t know either way. I just remember seeing a ton of Pens/Crosby commercials on every NBC broadcast (even when the Pens aren’t playing) and I think Versus has a bunch too.

I was about to post the same quote. Both teams had three minor penalties on the evening. Caps had two in a row in the second, and Montreal had two in a row in the third. I would hardly call that a “series,” and neither would I call it “highly questionable.” So I guess it should read:
they suddenly ran into… penalties.

They “suddenly” ran into penalties in Game 2 because “suddenly” the Caps are bigger and faster and “suddenly” all those blocked Ovechkin and Green shots hurt like hell and “suddenly” AO decides to lay out hits like he’s Elvis and “suddenly” it’s easier to start hooking and tripping and slashing.
Suddenly.
Now helping to keep an eye on all things Gr8 at Alex Ovetjkin.
the question the knuble interference on backstrom’s goal (the back of his skate may have touched halaks skate thereby rendering him temporarily paralyized and perhaps blind. they question the poti interference on halak when the hand pass was called (probably correct on that one but it was a pretty big pileup and no goal was scored). the latest is the ov exploding stick trick.
funny no mention of the first camilleri “trip call”. i know the ice is bad, but a tap on the thigh should not cause a player to fall down.

I saw the
most promoted team and most promoted playerquote as an indicator of the prestige (and dislike) that Ted so desires that the team will likely accumulate the further they go in the playoffs.
I took a long look at that goal yesterday (all goals can be seen on NHL.com) and decided – IMO – Knuble did interfere with Halak at :49 of the replay. It all just happened really quick. Your opinion may vary, but I don’t think teams would like this specific play (or accident) become standard fare against their goaltenders as the prep to receive a shot. I’m glad we got that goal though, we needed it.
No foolin’! Joe B and the Locker have to be up there in terms of broadcasting tandem tenure, too. We may have a lot of newcomers in the stands, but the people employed by the team have been around for a long, long time. Where does GMGM stand in terms of tenure compared to other GMs, I wonder?
Sorry… Threadjack’d.

George was hired in 1997, so he’s been the Caps GM for 13 years…. he was brought in right after the Caps missed the playoffs for the first time (and only time) under Poile. EOTP’s recap of Game 2 was a joke. It read the way my friends and I would’ve written about getting beaten 12-0 in Little League in the school newspaper. Blaming everything and everyone but themselves.

Yeah, the snowjob article caught me off guard from the picture onward, but it is not characteristic of his work as a whole. Anyway, it is the playoffs; everything gets blown out of proportion on both sides. I’m over it, personally.

We’re not blowing things out of proportion here, are we? At least not in terms of alleging fix or anything like that.
I once saw a similar post on another SBNation blog of one of my other favorite teams (non-hockey) after a particularly disappointing loss. I was so embarrassed to be a fan of that team. I wrote a short paragraph in the comments without swearing, criticizing the site beyond merely providing counterpoints to that particular post, or being disrespectful, and I was temporarily banned.

That goal was incredibly cool...
Ovechkin’s coolest on those lines, so far, was the four-goal night when he broke his nose, I think (“The Goal” notwithstanding).
I did some quick research on the Rocket’s goal-scoring career; even he would not have won his trophy every season that he played, but:
1944 – 45 — 50G, 23A, 73P in 50GP (next-closest goal scorer was Ted Kennedy (29)
1945 – 46 — 27G, 21Am 48P in 50GP (4th place in goals)
1946 – 47 — 45G, 26A, 71P in 60GP (next-closest goal scorers were Bobby Bauer and Ray Conacher (30 each))
1947 – 48 — 28G, 25P, 53P in 53GP (3rd place in goals, behind Ted Lindsay (33 in 60) and Elmer Lach (30 in 60))
1948 – 49 — Not in top 10 scorers
1949 – 50 — 43G, 22A, 65P in 70GP (next-closest goal scorer was Gordie Howe (35 in 70))
1950 – 51 — 42G, 24A, 66P in 65GP (2nd place to Gordie Howe (43 in 70)
1951 – 52 — Not in top 10 scorers
1952 – 53 — 28G, 33A, 61P in 70GP (4th place in goals, behind Gordie Howe (49 in 70), Ted Lindsay (32 in 70), and Wally Hergesheimer (30 in 70))
1953 – 54 — 37G, 30A, 67P in 70GP (next-closest goal scorer was Gordie Howe (33 in 70))
1954 – 55 — 38G, 36A, 74P in 67GP (tied with Bernie Geoffrion for 1st)
1955 – 56 — 38G, 33A, 71P in 70GP (tied with Gordie Howe for 2nd, behind Jean Beliveau (47 in 70))
1956 – 57 — 33G, 29A, 62P in 63GP (tied with Jean Beliveau for 2nd, behind Gordie Howe (44 in 70))
1957 – 58 — Not in top 10 scorers
1958 – 59 — Not in top 10 scorers
1959 – 60 — Not in top 10 scorers
six times in 18 seasons is a hell of a run! I’d love to see something on his “rivalry” with Gordie Howe, which seems to have been ever-present between 1949 and 1956. Interesting stuff!

A close runner-up is that one where he broke his stick and went to the bench for another; everyone’s focused on Backstrom behind the net, and Ovi streaks in, gets the pass, and slams it past the goalie. That one was awesome!

I’m interested that no one over there has focused on the single most indefensible non-call of the series, th Game 1 OT haul-down on the breakaway. I think it was Jagr, or was it Gionta? Can’t remember. Either way, that was bad.

I’ve enjoyed all of the Japers’ Rink Radio thus far but the last one with Robert L. as guest was perhaps my favorite. It was a really good discussion I thought. That’s why I was surprised by the recap. Very different tone of voice.
I decided to chalk it up to disappointment on his part. I certainly have complained vehemently about ref calls right after a game, but am usually more objective by the morning.

I can understand them being pissed. I would be too if the Caps coughed up a 4 – 1 lead. I just don’t dig the “the refs took it all away from us” angle.
The goal breakdown post is way more balanced this morning.
Repeating myself, but I have really liked the content on the site, apart from the one post, and I’m inclined to cut them a break for that one.

I imagine there’s good content there most of the time and, yeah, it’s a hard loss to swallow. I know I wouldn’t want to have to write a recap if the situation had been reversed.
But if you blame the entire thing on bad calls (despite evidence to the contrary) and an NHL conspiracy (really?) without ONE self-recrimination, then you sound like a 4th grader crying and kicking cans on the way home from the ball field (I’m going to milk childhood memories for all its worth here).
The recap would’ve been easier to take if they’d tempered it with some objective analysis about MTL’s slip-ups and weak spots, even if they’d stuck with their “ref’s stole it from us” mantra. But they didn’t and it made them sound like homers.

i like the suggestion that ov should have been penalized for carrying the end of his broken stick to the bench, well behind the play. the rules are bit squishy on this point, basically saying that a player with a broken stick can “participate in the game” so long as you drop the broken stick. ov was not “participating” in the game in that he was skating to the bench without playing the puck or another player, although he was clearly skating on the ice with a broken stick while play was ongoing. i actually think what he did was the safer play for all involved. one less busted stick on the ice is a good thing.
calling that penalty would have been the equivalent of calling an illegal line shift cause a player was 6’ from the bench when he was replaced on the ice. a rule violation by the absolute letter of the rule book but not a call that should or would be made in this particular situation.
Just trying to capture the spirit of the thing...

one less busted stick on the ice is a good thing.
I know if a stick on the is pushed out of the way it’s a penalty, in the idea that you’re interfering with a player trying to reacquire his stick, but does that apply to pieces of broken stick on the ice?
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
It’s a penalty shot if you try to shoot a broken stick or a dropped stick toward the puck carrier, I’m pretty sure.

I know you can’t use a broken stick. That’s the opposite of what I was asking.
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
I’m not talking about using a broken stick, but ok. I guess I don’t know what you’re asking.
My ability to post is only surpassed by my ability to pinch pennies.
The comment about not leaving the broken pieces on the ice. If a player pushes it out of his way, is it a penalty, as it would be if an unbroken stick was pushed away from a player perhaps trying to retrieve it?
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
I don’t believe it would be a penalty, because there’s generally no reason for a player to try and pick up a broken stick after he’s dropped it. You see guys push broken sticks aside a lot with no penalties issued.
My ability to post is only surpassed by my ability to pinch pennies.
Moving a broken stick is only a PIM if you shoot it at another player.
I hate listening to people's dreams. It is like flipping through a stack of photographs. If I'm not in any of them and nobody is having sex, I just don't care.
Correct. If you shoot it towards a player to impede them it’s a penalty, and if they have the puck, that player gets a penalty shot. Nylander got (and scored) a penalty shot goal due to that call during the 2008-09 season…

no, you can move a broken stick out of the way so long as it does not interfere with the play. you can shove a dropped stick out of the way so long as it doesnt interfere with the play or the player trying to reaquire it.
Just trying to capture the spirit of the thing...
by dcsportsfan1 on Apr 19, 2010 9:18 AM EDT up reply actions
You cannot shove a dropped stick (not broken) while in play, otherwise it’s interference. AO got a penalty for that exact play earlier this season. It shouldn’t matter if it’s broken, though.
by DrinkingPartner on Apr 19, 2010 9:23 AM EDT up reply actions
you can so long as you are not moving it away from the player who is trying to pick it up or you shove it in the way of the puck or another player.
When the player or goalkeeper discards the broken portion of a stick or some other object by tossing it or shooting it to the side of the ice (and not over the boards) in such a way as will not interfere with play or opposing player, no penalty will be imposed for so doing. When moving a stick that is not broken, no penalty shall be assessed as long as it does not interfere with the play and the player or goalkeeper who lost said stick is not attempting to retrieve it, otherwise an interference penalty must be assessed.

I’ve asked refs in my son’s games about this very rule, because I too thought that a player couldn’t touch a broken stick at all.
A player can touch the stick to move it out of the way of the play (e.g., to the boards), however they cannot move it into play (e.g., into the line of the point shot from the defenseman).
It’s a judgment call, but isn’t usually that difficult.

Oh… but maybe the MON players quit on the play because they knew the ref was calling a PIM! Surely that is the fault of the ref as well! Not on the Habs. Nope. Not their fault at all that they squandered a 4-1 lead late in the second. Gotta be someone else’s fault. Their 24 Cups would never allow their players tto lose without ref help.

Kolbe's call...
Perhaps this is a personal vendetta of mine.
I like Steve Kolbe as a guy. He actually seems like a cool and down to earth person and I remember him well from the days where he was working as a producer at WTEM.
But, MAN, do I miss having even a decent hockey announcer in DC. As a kid, I used to fall asleep to Ron Webber’s calls on the radio.
The man truly painted a picture of what was going on on the ice.
Hockey can really be an amazing sport to listen to on the radio.
And Kolbe’s latest call on Backstrom’s goal is another example of where he’s lacking. I have no idea what happened for 30 seconds of play other than “Backstrom shoots and SCOOOORES”. No set up. Nothing. Was he in the slot? Slapshot from the point? Pass from whom?? Nothing!
Really sucks. Bigtime. Again, Kolbe seems like a nice guy but I’ve been waiting nearly 10 years for him to get even decent as a hockey announcer and it just hasn’t happened.
Marginally related: pretty amazing that the team is in its 35th season and has had just two radio PbP guys.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
You had me at no problem.
I guess that is pretty amazing.
I guess I always thought hockey radio announcers were kind of like baseball guys where they represented the team and stayed forever. But maybe that’s just a Ron Weber thing?
Either way, the way I see it having shaken down is that Kolbe really kind of lucked into the job at a time when the entire organization was really reeling and had no real direction. He was a part-timer on WTEM when they put him on the Weber broadcasts to be groomed as the next PBP guy. My guess is that he’s a super nice guy and lobbied REALLY hard for his dream job (fair enough, who wouldn’t?)
But he was bad at first and he’s really only gotten marginally better.
And to top it all off…we happen to have a guy in John Walton who’s widely acknowledged as one of the best in the business working for our minor league affiliate.
I think for years the organization hasn’t paid too much attention to the quality of the radio guys (since, to be fair, the organization had WAY bigger problems). But, really, it’s a major issue.
To me, Caps hockey is unlistenable on the radio now. And I used to LOVE listening to hockey on the radio. There’s literally no point now because I have no clue what’s going on.
Chim-chim is a really nice guy, and I don’t wish any ill on him, but I’d love to have Walton calling the Caps every night.

Actually, it brings up a decent point.
I remember when Locker started (and I don’t remember who he was working with then, but I know that it wasn’t Beninati…he came a few years later).
Locker was TERRIBLE on the air at first. Tripped over words, had this super annoying voice, did nothing but spout silly cliches.
It took him a few years to get his legs under him, but now he’s one of the best in the business.
Many times when I would listen to Kolbe I would analogize to that situation. But he really just hasn’t turned the corner. He’s still really unlistenable, frankly.
I think he’s often hamstrung by the dope he shares the booth with.

But I think he was brought in because at some point Kolbe was SO bad that he couldn’t carry the games on his own.
If you go back to the times when Kolbe was going solo in the booth (which I BELIEVE is pretty par for the course for lots of hockey radio guys), it really was like a car wreck.
Sabourin, as dopey as he is, marked a pretty significant improvement. Honest.
Sorry, but I can’t agree that a guy who I’ve listened to struggle for a full 30 seconds to find the word “crease” is a marked improvement to any kind of broadcast.
My ability to post is only surpassed by my ability to pinch pennies.
And did you listen before?
Trust me, I’m right about this. Kolbe when he started was like he is now but waaaay greener. And they gave him the entire broadcast when Weber retired.
I’m trying really hard to parse my words here because, again, the tricky thing about Kolbe is that he seems like a solid dude. But it was really really really bad. Objectively.
Sabourin made it at least marginally better because he killed some of the dead air.
Killed some of the dead air with stammers and starts, bleh. We’re just not going to agree, and that’s fine.
My ability to post is only surpassed by my ability to pinch pennies.
I mean…I guess that’s fair.
Dead air vs. stammers and starts.
They both suck, right?
I’m not saying it was lightyears better or anything…or that Sabourin is really very good. It wasn’t and he isn’t.
I thought it was a marginal improvement over a really bad product. I wouldn’t necessarily disagree with the contention that it wasn’t that much of an improvement.
It’s just that SOMETHING had to be done at that point. Really, even though the organization was going through some really tough times at that point, Kolbe was either going to get canned or someone was going to be brought in to try to fix what was an unlistenable product.
I’d agree that it didn’t really work because Sabourin was probably another penny-pinching choice without a ton of skill,
This is where I am. I really like Steve Kolbe. He sounds like an outstanding human being. I just find him hard to listen to.

I recall Jeff Rimmer and Kenny Albert as the PBP guys before Joe B

The between period call-in show was awesome. Two favorite moments: (1) someone setting up a camera/technology question then asking Koken how they keep the lights from shining off his bald head (and Al lecturing about how a few bad apples ruin it for everyone). McPhee could barely keep a straight face. (2) someone complementing Dino’s tenacity then asking whether Dino showed that same tenacity in the back of the limo — Burridge the guest that time and likewise ready to bust up.
I was going to make a similar post.
It really was pretty cool, especially in retrospect. The whole production had the feel of like 10 guys setting something up out of their basement kind of thing.
Al Koken really made a name for himself on those broadcasts and became a DC icon, you know? There were a lot of funny moments. Actually, if I ever got the chance to have a beer with Al Koken (stupid that he started the “Smokin’ Al Koken” thing, btw), I’d love to have him reminisce about those times. I’m sure they were great for him, too.
I remember someone calling in to the David Poile report on HTS during an intermission, hosted by Dave Johnson. The guy had a 2 part question
1) blah blah blah something about Defensmen
2) And my second question is for Dave…do you take it up the ass?
There was stunned silence on the set for about a second and a half, and Johnson turns to Poile and says
So how about that first question
I don’t even know how Poile answered because I was laughing too hard.

i dont listen too much to kolbe but i did listen to his call on back OT goal. i mean, baxks unexpectedly scored 30 seconds into overtime to win a game that the team was trailing 4-1…do you expect a detailed analysis of the play or do you expect kolbe to go batshit crazy? i mean, the horns are sounding so if you are listening on the radio i think all you want to know is that they scored and the game is over. he can follow up with the details later. just my opinion.
i agree that saborin is horrible. not only doesnt he bring any significant analytics to the broadcast, but his voice is not made for radio.

Yeah, Kolbe’s game is to give you the excitement of the moment and then describe for you what led to that moment afterwards. Kind of like how when you’re at the arena, you see the puck hit the back of the net and you go crazy—then you look up at the scoreboard to watch the replay of what exactly happened. I have no problem with this.

I don’t get it…honestly…I guess you do know the guy personally and, again, he does seem like a super nice guy.
But how in the world is this not a problem?
Have you heard great hockey guys (or even some decent hockey radio guys)?
It makes listening to the game fun.
Listening to Kolbe is like watching a gamecast or something. You get nothing until something huge happens then a quick recap. It’s really not good and something worthy of having a “problem” with, no??
I listen to Walton all the time. He’s not much better at painting a picture, but I do enjoy him more for his wit and amazing recall ability when it comes to stats and historical information.
It sounds to me like you want a guy like Chuck Kaiten, and that’s cool, just not the type of call I like to hear.
My ability to post is only surpassed by my ability to pinch pennies.
And you know what? Wit and things like that are important too, to be honest.
That was one of the things that made Ron Weber really good as well. Or almost any of those legendary baseball announcers.
That’s kind of another problem with Kolbe. He’s really not all that funny or entertaining. Again, real nice guy, but just not there, in my opinion.
I have no idea who Chuck Kaiten is. And I’ve only listened to John Walton a couple times. (Although I found him to be lightyears smoother and better than Kolbe, but that’s not really the point here).
But I do know that I used to LOVE listening to Ron Weber when I was a kid. (Hockey was my favorite sport and in the 80’s, not all the games were on TV, so I would sit next to my radio as a little kid and listen to Caps games). And now I literally have turned Caps radio broadcasts off on many occasions because I got so frustrated with the poor announcing.
The fact that he went crazy after is totally fine. It’s the call before that that sucked.
I literally have NO clue what happened for 30 seconds of play (and that’s a pretty significant amount of time). I honestly didn’t even know that the Caps had the puck until he yelled out that Backstrom scored the goal! That’s just not a good call.
After the goal=fine
Before the goal=terrible
And again, yes, Sabourin is pretty terrible. But so is Kolbe.
I’m almost worried that we’re going to have a generation of hockey fans here in DC who have no idea what a good hockey broadcast sounds like. And for those of us who grew up with Ron Weber, believe me, that’s a real sham.
i hear you. to be fair, he was trying to set up the scene by talking about past home OT playoff history. not sure if they just came out of a commercial when the puck dropped. who expects the first rush down the ice to be a goal. was a bit sudden.
i dont have alot of history with other radio guys outside of ron webber. i do know hockey has to be the toughest sport to do radio play by play in terms of keeping up with whats going on. players changing all the time, fast pace, not to mention some difficult names to pronounce.
Just trying to capture the spirit of the thing...

Kolbe was trying to set-up the overtime. Not sure what he was doing during the 15 minute break. Set-up should have been done during play stoppages, especially in overtime.
I grew up with Lou Boudreau and Jim West in Chicago, followed by Pat Foley. Totally spoiled me.
Any chance John Walton might get a bump up from Hershey? He’s fantastic. Can’t understand why he’s not in the NHL now. He made the AHL play-offs last year a total pleasure. True NHL quality talent.
Totally agree with this.
Again, just to reiterate, I am really starting to get the impression that a lot of DC hockey fans who are new to the sport don’t have any clue how great hockey can be on the radio.
It’s incredibly hard to do. But the best do it and do it incredibly well. Hockey can be THE best sport (as good as baseball, actually) on the radio when it’s done well. Seriously.
Don’t appreciate the insinuation that I’m a new-to-the-sport fan.
My ability to post is only surpassed by my ability to pinch pennies.
I’ve been watching the Caps for over a decade and I can’t stand listening to sports on the radio. I guess in order to not be “new to the sport” my fandom has to predate the invention of television.

That’s how much we’re missing out on in this market. I honestly believe that. And, for the record, I also do enjoy listening to baseball on the radio (to the extent that I really like baseball at all anymore, which isn’t too much).
Could Kolbe be better? Yeah, but radio’s a dying art, and Jim Hughson is in Toronto.

Ha…sorry, but who’s Jim Hughson?
Also, I’m not sure about this whole “Radio’s a dying art” thing. It’s not as prevalent as it used to be, sure. But there’s still a place for it, no doubt about it.
If nothing else, you need a place to get your broadcasts when you’re riding in your car (which happens a lot). Until they invent TV’s that you don’t have to actually watch that’s going to be the case.
Also, wait til the team makes a deep playoff run and all the games are nationally broadcast on NBC or something. We’ll be wanting that local radio broadcast to be good.
Radio is now a niche medium, but there’s still plenty of room for talent in broadcasting. Frankly, by all accounts, we’ve got a great one working for our minor league affiliate. We could easily make that change, no?
I think Walton works for the Bears and not Washington. I don’t think you can just ‘call up’ a broadcaster as if he were a player.
My ability to post is only surpassed by my ability to pinch pennies.
You’re right — it would probably take about a day and a half of contract negotiations. And he wouldn’t be able to go back.
But if the Caps wanted him, he’d come running and Hershey wouldn’t stop him — they’d wish him well.

I’m sure you can’t. It’s a totally different situation, you’re right.
The real difference is that I’m sure that everyone in the organization kind of knows this whole situation exists. And I’m sure they know there’s a John Walton out there and he’s really good.
And I’m also sure that a guy like John Walton would almost certainly jump at the chance to work for any NHL team. The Bears might be great, but working for the big show is still different. Unless, I suppose, he has some personal reasons for wanting to stay in Hershey. Just unlikely, I guess…
I’d be shocked if Walton’s contract (assuming he had one) didn’t have an opt-out for NHL opportunities.
Hershey being Hershey, and Doug Yingst being Doug Yingst, it really doesn’t matter whether it does or not, eh? that is a classy organization, and they wouldn’t block a guy from following his dream.

Hughson’s the main PXP guy for the CBC — he’s the Mike Emerick equivalent in Canada. He does a HNIC game every week. Solid as they come.

If you get the NHL Network, I recommend you watch Hockey Night in Canada each Saturday night. It’s produced by the CBC and simulcast here on the NHL Network, and it just shows you how good a hockey game can be on TV.
Yes, they have Don Cherry, and yes Ron MacLean is a pompous ass, but it’s so good. It puts the Versus and NBC broadcasts to shame.

Also, I’m not asking for some kind of legend.
Really, I’d just like competence, to be honest.
When he started, Ron Weber was doing a niche sport in a niche market for a team that many thought had no chance to survive.
He was much better than Steve Kolbe and I’m not sure he’s considered like a “legend” of hockey broadcasting by any stretch.
I prefer listening to baseball on the radio. Other sports move too fast to get a picture from a voice.
agreed. I love to listen to baseball on the radio at night because I can be drifting off to sleep and the game as a certain pacing to it that makes it easy to listen to. I cannot listen to west coast hockey games while trying to go to bed because it moves so fast, I have to really concentrate to form a picture of what is going on. And concentrating that hard does not help me sleep.

I’m new to this board, but I’m getting the impression that people are REALLY touchy on this “new” vs. “old” fan thing, huh?
Frankly, I could care less. Enjoy hockey. It’s a really cool sport.
I am not a huge Kolbe fan and can’t stand Sabourin, but I do think it’s challenging to criticize him for the OT call.
Did anyone listen to Sam Rosen? He was also setting up the OT by talking about no home OT playoff wins since 1998 and cut himself off to call the goal. I’m sure there are Sam Rosen critics out there, but I think he’s certainly a very competent, if not very good announcer.
Watching more games on Slingbox than anyone else!
He’s great — he’s a good football guy, too.
I think that play was pretty innocuous. I certainly wasn’t expecting a goal there, and I can see how PXP guys — that early in the period — are just setting up what happened, what’s going on, OT records, etc. For him or anyone not to be ready to call a goal there is understandable.
TV guy=okay…who cares?
Radio guy=not so much
And, by the way, it’s not like I’m spouting off on this whole thing because it’s the first time it’s happened. Kolbe routinely completely misses calls. I mean, all the time. It’s awful.
Ha…fair enough.
Part of the reason that I’m bringing this up, actually is that I’m out of the country for the playoffs run. Sometimes the TV feeds kind of suck and I WISH that I could have a decent radio broadcast to fall back on.
So see…sometimes you still do need a radio feed.
Try the English one from Montreal.
My ability to post is only surpassed by my ability to pinch pennies.
In general, I agree that Kolbe is not detailed enough on the radio. I’m excusing him for the OT call, but too often he jumps to a goal mid-period without describing how the teams got there.
Someone above referenced Chuck Kaiton. He does PXP for the Canes’ on radio and is one of the best in keeping you exactly in tune with the action. If you can get by his inability to pronounce Eastern European names (Samsonov, Jurcina, Varlamov), he’s outstanding.
For the same reason I like Dave Mishkin of the Lightning. No one talks faster than him – although he has a very high pitched goal call.
Watching more games on Slingbox than anyone else!
So the ’Canes and the Lightning both probably have radio guys who are better than ours? That sucks.
You know, STLSpidey, just as a side note…I don’t think it’s necessarily ALL about keeping you up with exactly what’s going on on the ice. I don’t think that Ron Weber used to do that, precisely.
Like, there’s other ways to call hockey and make sure you are telling the audience the story of what’s going on out there.
Kolbe’s problem is that he’s not detailed AT ALL. Like, I almost never know who’s got the puck and if I do know, then I certainly don’t know where they are or really what they’re doing. It’s like a non-broadcast, almost. Or like watching a gamecast. Not good enough.
You and I are in agreement on this.
Having XM and being in the central time zone means that I am driving home a lot during the season listening to games. As you probably know, XM almost always broadcasts the home team’s announcers.
I’m not knowledgeable enough to say that Kolbe is among the worst, but I know he’s not among the best, precisely for the reasons you are highlighting.
Watching more games on Slingbox than anyone else!
I think this is selling Weber short. Weber was the best I knew of for giving you the geography of the game. Really good at telling you where the puck was — which side of the ice, how close to the circle, the blue line, etc. That’s what I remember best — I always felt like I knew exactly where the play was happening.
Atta dinnin stick a who!

With Weber I used to anticipate a goal, he was so good at giving you a feel for what was going on you knew when a good opportunity was at hand
Just another quick point…Kolbe is TERRIBLE at this. TERRIBLE.
Like when you listen on the radio he’ll get all super excited for a big save or something and you’ll be like, “Phew! Wow, the Caps really escaped something there”.
Then you’ll watch the exact play on TV later and it’s really not that much more than a pretty routine save. He’s just not very good at feeling the moment and conveying that to the listeners.
Yeah, no definitely. I always knew where the puck was with him.
I think what I’m saying is that it’s not like he would just talk a mile a minute to tell you what was happening.
His talent was in telling you what was happening without it seeming like it was all going by so fast. It was a relatively relaxed call but you felt like you could really tell what was going on.
And yeah, he was amazing at anticipating the goals. It almost felt like he was making the call on some kind of replay/tape delay because he was so good at building the tension.
Again, I’m not asking for anything like that kind of quality.
But, literally, I swear…with Kolbe, you have NO CLUE whatsoever what’s going on on the ice. It’s like a useless call. And he’s been holding the job for more than a decade.
I don’t want to be so critical of a guy who seems like such a solid and nice fellow. But I don’t think he’s good enough to be doing the job he has now. Perhaps the organization could have him doing something else? I’d like to see him keep some kind of job. Just not my Caps play by play.
I’ve been bothered by this for so many years now…and it just doesn’t seem to get any better…
I can say that Steve is a nice guy and is pretty good fantasy footballer. Radio is an artform and there aren’t many still around that can place you in arena or stadium or whatever.

When you consider that the Caps have received nothing from Green for two games and nothing from the powerplay (the two are likely related), the Caps are probably lucky to be tied in this series. If both come around in Montreal, this series could be over in five.
It’s really goofy that they haven’t scored a PPG yet.

I’ve been saying for a while, the Caps PP is super-streaky. They can go 0-fer for a 4 game stretch, and they can click at 40% for a 4-game stretch. The only solace is that they’ll eventually explode for 2+ PPGs in a game.
You had me at no problem.
It’s really goofy that they haven’t scored a PPG yet.
Especially when you consider that out of 16 teams in the playoffs, only three haven’t scored a PP goal. The other two are Buffalo and Nashville who, respectively, were ranked 17th and 24th in the powerplay during the regular season. The only good news is that while Montreal has the best road powerplay, they’re downright mediocre at home at just a little under 17%.
I think the point is that you’d like your bigger-minutes D’s as your best D’s since they’re out there more often.

Relying on a 20 year old to carry the defensive burden isn’t a good recipe for a grueling Stanley Cup run. He needs to be dependable and do his job. Right now he is a 3rd pairing guy. I’d like to see Green and Schultz be the guys who get it done.

Relying on a 20 year old to carry the defensive burden isn’t a good recipe for a grueling Stanley Cup run.
Don’t tell that to the LA Kings.
Was just going to say that. Although Doughty at least has more NHL experience.
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
Indeed he is. Surprisingly (or maybe not), Carlson’s production this season when projected over 82 games is on par with Doughty’s first season. And so far, John’s numbers in the playoffs are better than Doughty’s. Obviously, no one is taking Carlson over Doughty (now), but Carlson is growing up faster than I think anyone could have projected.
I think Doughty is just tremendous, and while Carlson may out-point him in the future, I think he needs to get better in his own end before he can be considered a real top-flight guy.
But, he’s 20! He’s played all of what… 15 NHL games? It’s something you have to learn while you play.
Carlson at 20 is better than Green at 20 both offensively and defensively. Scary thought.
I hate listening to people's dreams. It is like flipping through a stack of photographs. If I'm not in any of them and nobody is having sex, I just don't care.
If it’s not this year he’s in trouble. Doughty is going to take that trophy and go hide for the foreseeable future (if he’s healthy).
I hate listening to people's dreams. It is like flipping through a stack of photographs. If I'm not in any of them and nobody is having sex, I just don't care.
You’re assuming Carlson doesn’t trump him in a year or two.
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
He won’t. As far ahead as Carlson is on Green’s curve, he’s at least that far behind Doughty’s curve. They are the same age, same draft year, and Doughty is a legitimate Norris candidate and was a stud for Team Canada. He is ridiculous and I love watching him play.
I hate listening to people's dreams. It is like flipping through a stack of photographs. If I'm not in any of them and nobody is having sex, I just don't care.
Point noted, but I was trying to allow for Carlson’s background being a year or two behind Doughty in general. Just your typical “late bloomer”, but only because he didn’t start out in Canada.
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
Doughty has 2 full NHL seasons under his belt already. Carlson will get his shot at the Calder next season, for chrissakes. Give him some time, we’ll see how talented he really is.
But you can bet Carlson will be in Sochi.
You had me at no problem.
I don’t know about Sochi. It’s going to be a tough call. Who do you take off the Vancouver team? Rafalski, Whitney, Gleason will be out, but you have Komisarek and Martin potentially back. So there’s only one obviously open spot, and Carlson isn’t the only suitor. Most notably, Bogosian is going to need a spot on that team.
I hate listening to people's dreams. It is like flipping through a stack of photographs. If I'm not in any of them and nobody is having sex, I just don't care.
I could see Carlson supplanting one of the Johnsons on the USA blueline. I mean St Louis had a great year for TB and was a past Team Canada member but still didn’t make the team in Vancouver.

His hype started way before he went to LA. He was on Team USA squads as a kid, went to Michigan with hype, was drafted with hype. He’s been a part of Team USA forever it seems. Plus, Canadians (especially in Vancouver) hate him. I don’t think he’s all that good, but from a realistic point of view he’s not going to be cut.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see Komisarek or Orpik not make it in 2014. If JC keeps improving USA would be foolish to leave him off going into a tournament full of skilled players on international ice to keep two slower physical Dmen on the team. Komisarek has to show how he rebounds from injuries/expectations and Orpik will be in his mid 30s by then. We’ll see how much he slows down.

I agree that those are the two most likely to go. Martin will be getting old but he skates so well and is a very smart player. I don’t see him getting cut. Bogosian and JC > Orpik and Komisarek.

Carlson is a late bloomer compared to Doughty, but I’m not sure it’s going to let him catch up by, say, age 25. I think Doughty is going to be the best D of this generation. My conclusion is based on how high I am on Doughty, not being down on Carlson. I think Carlson is and will be great but he’s not on the same level as Doughty.
I hate listening to people's dreams. It is like flipping through a stack of photographs. If I'm not in any of them and nobody is having sex, I just don't care.
And Doughty has a decent supporting cast. Somehow Scuderi is still ridiculously underrated.

I think that contract is fair for what he brings. I know people didn’t like it when it happened but he plays an important role and it’s not even that long of a deal. But I’ve always been pro-Scuderi so maybe I’m just biased.

I think they could’ve gotten someone Scuderi-esque who didn’t just win the Stanley Cup.
I have to go back and look and see who else was available this past off-season, but it just seems that he’s being overpaid.
I bet Shero is wishing they had paid him this past summer even if had meant another roster move.
"You ever use smelling salts, every time you type a bad blog?" Brooks Laich
I don’t think he could’ve afforded him. He knew that he already had 5 legitimate defensemen (Gonchar, Orpik, Eaton, Letang, Goligoski), one in the AHL (Lovejoy), and with limited budget room sign 2 more (McKee and Skoula).
If he had signed him, that would’ve created tons of problems for the Letang contract as well as any ability to re-sign Cooke, Eaton, and (possibly) Gonchar.
I like Scuderi as a player — and I think he’s still under the radar. But he’s paid a lot of money.
PIT couldn’t afford him, but at the same time he was their best defensive player. 3.4 isn’t a ton, but it’s not insignificant either. It might cause problems for LAK next off-season, but right now they are fine with that cap hit.
If he’s overpaid it’s because defensive D are generally underpaid/underrated; not because he doesn’t deserve the money. He’s (once again) been real solid in the playoffs so far. Doughty gets all the press (as he should) but Scuderi has quietly done a very nice job.
I hate listening to people's dreams. It is like flipping through a stack of photographs. If I'm not in any of them and nobody is having sex, I just don't care.
Doesn’t it seem that players like Scuderi — all defense, no offense — take longer to mature? He really blossomed the past 2-3 seasons, but before that, he was really bad.
I remember watching him right after the lockout (on a terrible Pittsburgh team), and he looked lost out there. And he was 25-26 at the time — no spring chicken.
Well he played Juniors and then went to BC. He definitely started his pro career a little later than most. I agree that defensive D do take longer to mature. It’s all a part of figuring out how to tailor your skill set to the NHL game. That’s harder to do without puck skills. Being on a bad team probably helped him. He got burned a lot but he also always had a roster spot and plenty of ice time. By the time the Pens were ready to compete he had plenty of experience and could actually be relied on. The Caps don’t have guys like that, and it’s another reason they are a couple years behind the Pens on the development curve.
I hate listening to people's dreams. It is like flipping through a stack of photographs. If I'm not in any of them and nobody is having sex, I just don't care.
Looking at his numbers he spent a lot more time in the AHL than I had remembered.
I hate listening to people's dreams. It is like flipping through a stack of photographs. If I'm not in any of them and nobody is having sex, I just don't care.
And if you weren’t able to crack that Pens lineup, you were not remotely ready for the NHL.
That was one terrible team.
Re-signing any of those 3 shouldn’t be a priority for the Pens. I guess you could argue for Eaton just because their blueline is so weak. Cooke should never be a priority and Gonch looks to be over the hill.
Scuderi is much better and would have been an important cog. Like I said in my post above I realize it would probably involved having to make a move.
McKee & Skoula don’t bring anything to the table of this point in their careers. McKee was a complete waste of 1 mil of cap space.
"You ever use smelling salts, every time you type a bad blog?" Brooks Laich
Carlson’s not being asked to carry the defensive burden. Through two games Mike Green has played 54:10 and Carlson has played 38:58, so clearly Bruce is still protecting Carlson to an extent.

Shake, Rattled and Roll....
I really hope that what Halak’s shaking is just that he’s nervous and not some serious medical condition. There are some serious conditions of the nervous system that can cause shakes like that, and they’re not fun…
Let's go Caps!
I’d think if it was a serious medical condition, he wouldn’t be on the ice… nerves, or p*ssed off, one of the two. I’ve been so mad I shook before.

Is Halak's No Comment More of an Issue?
I don’t buy shaking either. Heck, he just gave up a goal in the playoffs and might have some adrenaline flowing.
I think, perhaps, of bigger concern, was Halak’s complete “no comment” when asked about the shaking. He didn’t even provide some friendly banter back.
Does that suggest he’s stiffening up a bit and rattled by the six goals? I like it when there is banter and people keep things light – like Theo and Pleckanec did and like OV usually does.
Watching more games on Slingbox than anyone else!
Definitely adrenaline. It’s not like almost every other goal that he gave up was relatively soft and was surprising that he didn’t stop or even get a piece of.
President and sole member of the Erskine lobby.
It’s pretty severe shaking, though. If that’s adrenaline, he must have been REALLY amped up with Fehr coming down the ice at him.
And do his extremities do that whenever he’s under big-time pressure? I dunno. It was only a half-second clip. Not near enough evidence to make more than a molehill out of.
You had me at no problem.
It was a pure breakaway. I’d’ve been amped up. I accept the adrenaline argument.

It was certainly adrenaline, but when you’re shaking like that it isn’t helpful especially in a game of exacts with regards to eye-limb coordination.
They were most definitely in his head and the only question is whether or not it was Fehr’s goal that did it. Shaking or not, I’d say giving up 5 more goals afterward is certainly evidence enough that they were in his head.
President and sole member of the Erskine lobby.
BP originally pointed this out, but I think it bears repeating. After blowing a 4 – 1 lead and a 5-4 lead with 90 seconds remaining, I can see the entire team’s confidence being at a bit of a low ebb.

Corey’s article on the trap includes some very interesting tactical analysis on what’s gone wrong in breaking the trap from Stecks and (more limited) BMo.
Reader’s Digest version: they need to play dump and chase. And when they do, they have do dump so as to permit the forecheck to operate, which hasn’t been happening.
Another nugget: Montreal in Game 2 had 8 scoring chances and 5 goals.

Hey, I’ve been beating the “dump and chase to beat the trap” drum for days upon weeks upon months!
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Seems like BB is reluctant to give up on the speedy attack through the neutral zone, which got us so many of our goals in the regular season… Not to mention the game winner in OT last game.
You had me at no problem.
Not to mention the game winner in OT last game.
That had nothing to do with dumping and chasing to break the trap and everything to do with taking what the defense was giving – which is exactly what the Caps should be doing on every rush. Sometimes the Habs will stack the neutral zone, so you dump. Sometimes they’ll back in (as they did on the G2 game-winner), so you carry.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Not dumping and chasing led to Plekanec’s GWG in game 1.

Yep. Caps top-six wings have size. And if you play the game like you expect a long series, hitting their D time and again will only serve to wear them down. It’s such a win-win.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Not to mention that dumping is also effective in drawing penalties (see Bergeron on Chimmer in G1, Gill on Semin in G2).
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Believe that both those plays arose after the Caps were able to get the puck to a forward on the strongside wall? That hasn’t always been possible but when it is, it’s a great situation for the Caps.

That is a great point.
That interference call is so easy to make. If the defender sticks his arm out at all to impede the player, and the player keeps his legs moving, that will be called.
It’s a no-brainer. In fact, that the very reason that you see players like Chimera beat the D to the puck after the dump. The D can’t touch him and they have to turn from backward to forward to catch him.
Watching more games on Slingbox than anyone else!
Yep. Caps top-six wings have size. And if you play the game like you expect a long series, hitting their D time and again will only serve to wear them down.
On your radio show this Saturday, Robert from EOTP admitted the same saying that if the Caps start throwing the puck in and taking the body, they’ll wear the Habs down and the series will be over.
2 different scenarios. Game 1 the blueline was stacked with Habs, Game 2 the Habs were skating backwards.
4th Floor, is next, swimvare, undervare, Eric Fehr...
See the EOTP goal analysis post. Two Habs forwards changed and Cammalleri went to forecheck in the wrong corner. That allowed the Caps to get the puck into the neutral zone with a numerical advantage and space available. The Habs D had to back off which allowed Baxter to carry the puck into the high slot.
That doesn’t happen often, and when it doesn’t the Caps need to get it deep and either do it soft or hard.

seems like the caps are ok with the dump part but not the chase part. i may be wrong but i think the strategy is to dump to the opposite corner to give the wing on that side some more time to retrieve the puck.
seems like ov is the prototypical wing to go retrieve the puck. comes with speed and a whole lotta hate. i wouldnt want to be a dman trying to dig a puck out of the corner with that train a comin’. i know he likes to carry the puck in the zone. but a chip and chase game down the left wing might be a good idea. against a left handed dman, the d would be forced to go to his backhand up the boards or forehand behind the net to a waiting knuble in the corner.
Just trying to capture the spirit of the thing...

WSJ Article on Caps Shooting Percentage
I haven’t seen this discussed here yet – my apologies if it has been.
On Friday in the WSJ’s The Daily Fix column, the author put forward the hypothesis that part of the reason for the Caps challenge in game 1 was that their shooting percentage was down from its in-season rate. The headline is “Caps Shoot, Caps No Longer Score.”
"With largely the same offensive personnel as in previous seasons, Washington has simply gotten very lucky in the shooting percentage department," Gabriel Desjardins wrote at Behind the Net. "Or for those of you who don’t believe in luck, the Capitals players have ‘made their shots’ this season. Either way, it’s no more likely to happen again next year than it was to have happened last year." At Puck Prospectus, Tom Awad called the high shooting percentage ripe for a letdown.
In statistics, this is called “regression to the mean,” and is a valid concept. Does anyone know the Caps’ shooting percentage in game 2?
I’m not sure this link will work, but you may be able to read the article here.

Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Was there any talk at all this weekend on the fact that the Caps gave up a 2-on-1 with the game tied at 4 with 5 minutes to go? Even though they came back to win, that was a huge, huge play, and I just couldn’t believe that Shultz was pinching in during that situation. I really thought that cost them the game.
He hasn’t looked this series at all.
Winning greatly quiets down criticism of shortcomings. That was really a horrific sequence with 6 minutes left in a tied playoff game.
You had me at no problem.
I think there’s been plenty of criticism of Green and Schultz, despite Boudreau’s protestations to the contrary as to their performances so far.
Somewhat related, Green and Schultz are both in the top 20 in the League in playoff blocked shots, despite only playing two games (three Habs are in the top 20, too).

I’m curious which Habs… but them being in the top 20 as far as blocked shots are concerned does not surprise me; that’s a big part of their game plan.

Briefly back on the goalie thing, knowing how Bruce operates, wouldn’t you assume he’s not tipping his hand at the morning skate? I mean, he’s told the goalies, but he’s going to treat them equally this morning and have them come off the ice at the same time. The less advance notice there is, the less the Montreal media and blogs can beat it to death. (And us, too.)

Brodeur, Bryzgalov, Miller. NHL release.
I guess Marty did set a couple records this season, but I kinda feel like the nomination is a bit of “well, I’m not sure who to mark as #3, so I guess I’ll go with Marty.” I certainly don’t feel like he’s at the same level as Bryz and Miller this season.

After Miller and Bryzgalov, the Brodeur nomination makes sense since Brodeur led a few goalie categories this season including shutouts and he was third in GAA, plus the Devils goaltending won the Jennings.

I like this quote from P&B at OFB
regarding the choice of who to start in goal:
“Jose Theodore again has placed his coach in the position of having to make it” – pretty succinctly states my view, and why Varly seems to be the slightly favorable choice.
Does the team really play better in front of Varlamov (intangibles), or is Varlamov merely a better choice between 2 fairly equal options based on past experience in the playoffs and this season with this particular opponent? (hard data)
I’m not sure you could say that the team responds better to Varly after Theo posting an unbeaten in regulation record in 2010.
Data says Theo is spooked by the French Canadiens as a visiting goalie and Varly is not.

Regardless, you can’t ignore the fact that there is growing consensus that Bruce is hitting the panic button. I can’t think of a shakier goalie conundrum, although yopu could argue for benching Halak and Nabokov, IMO.

I think you refer to it as Plan B. Yes, panic is too strong a term, but is there a doubt that Bruce yanked Theo not only because he wanted to wake up the team but also because he felt that Varly gave/gives him the best chance to win?
by S h a g g y on Apr 19, 2010 11:35 AM EDT up reply actions
He yanked Theo in order to give the team and the crowd something to focus on, as he said in his presser – so that’s true as far as it goes.
He also yanked Theo, at least imo, because the first goal was not a good one, and then he gave up another on the very next shot. It’s an easy situation for him to unravel in, and Bruce wanted to prevent that.

It needed to be written. Could be correct about getting by the Habs in 6, could be more correct in Rounds 2 and 3 if the Caps don’t get their defensive house in order.
But Brawndo's got what plants crave. It's got electrolytes.
Agree completely. I didn’t think it was all that far off. I mean the goaltending and defense did pretty much suck in game 2, and the defense pretty much sucked for much of game 1 as well. And if it doesn’t get better, we pretty much will be a non-factor in the playoffs.
Funny how the defensive “woes” of the Caps have been overshadowed by their record.
Personally, I think the Caps D is good enough to make it to the Finals, but they need to show it. It’s not as if the much-maligned Erskine and Tyler Sloan have been out there.
But Brawndo's got what plants crave. It's got electrolytes.

Touche’. Crap, whats the English equivalent to touche’. No French policy.
Granted?
4th Floor, is next, swimvare, undervare, Eric Fehr...
When in doubt go to Wikipedia:
In fencing, touché (French pronunciation: [tuʃe]), the French word for “touch”, is used as an acknowledgement of a hit, called out by the fencer who is hit. Conversely, if a fencer concedes a hit when no hit was actually made, the fencer’s adversary would say, “pas de touché” (French pronunciation: [pɑ də tuʃe]; English: “no touch”) to indicate that the hit should not be counted.
The word “touché” is also often used in popular culture and general conversation — for example, in an argument or debate — to commend someone on a clever response to an argument.
So – in short — I accept your commendation.

Yeah, that post absolutely sucks.
I mean… I don’t even know where to begin, but I’ll say this: he basically uses the fact that 45% of people prefer Theodore (a goalie who’s been fantastic in 2010) over Varlamov as evidence that we have no confidence in Theodore. That’s a fallacy. Then, he uses that logic to say that because we have no confidence in Theodore, the Capitals aren’t going to win the Stanley Cup (also a fallacy).
But perhaps the central flaw in his thesis is that nowhere in his post does he leave open the possibility that the Capitals will play better defense going forward than they did on Saturday. If he were saying “the Caps can’t win the Cup playing games like Game 2”, we’d all be in 100% agreement. But instead he’s saying “the Craps suck on defense and they always will no matter what. Also Theo sucks. Go Flyers!”

Boy am I getting shit at work today about Game 2. From BB jumping into the arms of the asst coaches to the Caps “coming back” to win after being down 4-1 with the help of the officials.
As for BB’s reaction, obviously these people don’t watch the Caps that often. As the other criticisms I’ll told ’em to walk down to the cafeteria and ask for some sheets of tin foil.

Pretty much this:
BB jumping into the arms of the asst coaches to the Caps "coming back" to win after being down 4-1 with the help of the officials
There’s some consensus that the NHL “doesn’t want the Caps to lose”, BB acted like a chick on the bench, jumping around like a high school cheerleader. Like I said – it’s all griping from Rangers, Bruins, and Penguins fans…

Hopeful reading of the tea leaves
Here’s my glass-is-half-full analysis at the moment.
The Caps have had a number of key players underperform. Semin, Laich, Schultz, Green spring to mind here. They also have gotten some good effort and grind from the bottom two lines, but no scoring. I have to think that at least a couple of the underperforming guys come back to their potential production, and that the third and fourth lines chip in some offense.
The PP can’t stay cold forever. I can see it staying cold for another 2, 3, 4 games, though. So the Caps might have to win this one on the basis of scoring at ES. But if the PP does contribute, they’re in great shape.
In contrast to the Caps, the Habs have had a bunch of players step way up. They’re due to step back a bit.
Caps in 6.

Caps really need to score the first one. And then another one. I don’t think a 1-goal deficit will be enough to get the Habs out of their system, but a 2-goal deficit might do it.
Once the Habs have to open it up and attack for 200 feet, they’re screwed.

Sometimes BB confounds me. With a line of 14-18-28, who the heck is going to crash the net? Does he want the 2nd line to score or not? Semin is taking shots, but someone needs to be up there to get the rebounds, when they occur. Flash is not the guy; hopefully Belanger can do it.
It’s probably an attempt to shake things up to try to get Semin, Laich, and Flash going.

thoughts
1. A 21-9-16 third line is damn near a second line anyway. It’s semantics when you’ve got that kind of talent (and maybe BB trying to get 9 out of his slump with some quality linemates).
2. Does anyone know enough about MTL’s D-pairings to say whether or not 14-18-28 is a good non-dump and chase/battle in the boards/crash the net matchup? In other words, Line 1 and 3 are skill plus crash, Line 2 is finesse, Line 4 is, well, Line 4. Maybe it makes more sense than it looks like at first.
Sample 2nd line shift
Corvo gains the red line, hard dumps it into the corner.
Flash and Sasha do a quick rock- paper- scissors to see who goes in after it. They both shoot “paper”, so Belanger goes in by himself and gets destroyed by Markov, emerges woozy and gives Flash a WTF with gloves raised palms up.
Sasha manages to steal the puck at the blueline and scissor kicks the buck up to Flash. Flash stick handles with one hand out, having shot “paper”, which he realizes loses to Sasha’s scissoring motion, and dumps it back into the zone around the boards and reluctantly follows it in like a third grader going to the principal’s office for shooting spitballs (do kids even do that anymore?).
And so on…
From Tarik

“Not on a game day, especially when I’m not playing,” he said politely.

Another take is that BB has learned from that incident and been more transparent to the goalies themselves for the plans and conditions that govern their performance. Theo probably understands that why the team needed a change, and why there is every hope for him to play game 5 barring out of body experiences for Varlamov. If those out of body experiences occur, he’s getting closer to a Cup. If they don’t, he knows he’ll have his chance to contribute.
And everybody should know by this point that if we’ve earned favorable matchups in the playoffs, much of that is Theo’s doing.

Way to segue to the “r” pronunciation. I believe his last name was pronounced “nets-cash.”

It sure was. Too bad he was never good enough to get a huge paycheck, the media would have had a field day.

Per Montreal’s media guide:
to-MAS, ple-KA-nets

So Wes had it wrong, with the “ple-KA-nyets” thing, then…

But per the NHL Pronunciation guide…

It's a mystery...

Seriously – the poor guy! At least Var-LA-mov got his name straightened out.
Too bad he wasn’t here when Сёмин first appeared on the scene. We might well see “SYOMIN” on the back of his sweaters and avoid all the bodily fluid jokes.

Also... Tarik has...
“For the Habs, it looks like Glen Metropolit is going to return after missing eight games with a shoulder injury. Based on the skate, it looks like he’s going to replace Sergei Kostitsyn.”
Could be interesting.

Who had the hat trick, again for MTL? (I know dumb question.)
erskine has scored...now i can die in peace
That has been the hardest thing about hockey for me, learning the lineups and depth charts for the opposing teams while the game is going on at such a high pace and I’m watching in on a crappy low def TV.

Sergei played the first two games?? I swear don’t even recall seeing him out there.

His shoulder has got to be sore and if we use our size advantage I’m not sure he survives the series. He missed half as much time as he was supposed to.

And if I recall correctly, Metro’s not blazing fast, either. Great hands, great hockey sense…but he won’t pressure the D as much as Kostitsyn, I don’t think?

So did Bourne make nice with the Caps fans now?
I feel like the hockey community is dying to chuck this guy under the next passing bus some reason, like he’s ever done anything wrong aside from some excessive celebrating (which I love). It’s like we can’t wait to give Crosby the reins as the games best player. I dunno if anyone else feels that, it’s just sort of a vibe I get.

K_C has been leading the “Kings are toast” bandwagon. He had me at first, but I’m reconsidering after watching the first two games. VAN is leaning on their top players way too hard (especially for a first round, even if they win) and they don’t really have any other options. Alberts is an absolute liability and LAK’s PP has been on fire. This series is shaping up to be the Sedin line against the LAK PP (as far as the offensive threats). I think LAK’s D has been much better (again, Scuderi getting no credit) and Luongo hasn’t out-played Quick at all. Anyone else been watching this series? Thoughts?

I’ve been catching parts of it, but probably not enough to offer much analysis other than restating that Wayne Simmonds is awesome.
Go Kings, though.
My ability to post is only surpassed by my ability to pinch pennies.
Meat Train was allegedly part of the package that ATL wanted back for Kovalchuk and LAK didn’t want to move him. I really like what he brings. He seems sorta like the Brooks Laich of LAK. Understated, jack of all trades, fits on any line, gives you an honest effort, etc.

He rules. He’d be unstoppable if he put on about 20 pounds of muscle.
I also like how Fredrik Modin has been telling haters to eat his crap.
My ability to post is only surpassed by my ability to pinch pennies.
Modin is so slooooooooow. Man is he slow. But yeah, he has played better than I expected him to. He doesn’t have much left in the tank though.

Don’t have to be quick to score from the top of the crease!

I’ve been watching the series on HNIC as I am kinda hoping for a Canucks-Capitals final for the potential excitement factor. Some random observatioins:
1/ Drew Doughty is all kinds of awesome. Loved him getting under Burrows’ skin in Game 1.
2/ Kudos F&B on the Simmonds-Laich comparison. Totally agree.
3/ VAN’s Samuelsson is underrated. Good scorer mentality. On the other side, LA’s Frolov is frustrating to no end—west coast Semin in my eyes.
4/ Neither goalie has done much to wow me so far.
5/ I could watch the Sedins play together all day. Amazing 3-4 years ago these guys were 3rd-4th liners on VAN
6/ I could see Eidler on VAN developing into a steady D. But I really miss watching Willie Mitchell play on their blue line.

Samuelsson is proving me wrong. I didn’t think DET would miss him as much as he missed DET. Turns out he’s alright. He’s been good in these playoffs as well. Maybe Sweden wants a do over?
I thought Quick was awesome in game 2 after the soft goal. He was pretty good in game 1 as well. Regardless, he’s definitely better than his last month of the season.
Edler and Bieksa have been right there, just about to become stars for like 3 years now it seems.

So would I, were it not for his contract. He reminds me of steady, reliable Caps blueliners of the past like Bob Rouse and Mark Tinordi who were not afraid to play with some grit and snarl when needed

Kovalchuk - Originally posted in the Ups/Downs Thread
Kovalchuk yesterday: 27:00 ATOI, zero shots. And he was out there for something like 11 PP minutes.
What a great trade that turned out to be.
NJD are in trouble, in my estimation (I think I picked Philly in 7, though, so that’s good).

Ovechkin had a similar game recently.

No, really? Must have missed that one…
To be fair, Kovy had a couple of assists, so he did something at least…even if it was just dishing it back to Rolston at the point for a shot that happened to go in.

YLM posted that in the OT thread. Incredible that he thinks PPP is less relevant than himself. And I love that PPP calls him Bilbo. Reminds me of how you call MarioD Huck.

It was Billo, not Bilbo.
And why in the OT thread? It’s about hockey? We talked about Houston’s outrageous article about Mirtle in the Clips when it originally went down? I wish I could have such a high profile Huckleberry. But commenter wars on SBN will never reach that level.

Whoops, I read that incorrectly. Bilbo is a better nickname, IMO. You’ll have to ask YLM why he posted it in OT instead of the Clips. And stop abusing those poor question marks. By the way, you’ll always have a high profile in my book, buddy. You’re the legendary F&B, fan club and all.
