Man. My phone is going off from friends saying this was a "must win" game and that the Capitals are not a team built for the playoffs. Please let's not over-react. The Capitals made a lot of the same, old mistakes, but the film exposes a lot mistakes the Caps can lean and build off from for the rest of this series.
What continues to drive me mad is the lack of back-checking. The Gomez goal and OT winner were both evident of that. All year long I've watched opponents skate and make moves after crossing the blue line while the Caps forwards take lazy strides to get back. Ovechkin continues to be the only forward that hustles back on D. Alan May made a valid point post-game that the Caps all-game applied zero pressure in the neutral zone.
As for the offense, Ovechkin was held shotless and it's obvious the Mounties will employ the same checking strategy Game 2. This means someone's gotta step up. Semin, Steckel...anyone.
