The Habs are playing some amazing defense that I’m sure won’t last much longer in this series. Wasting all their energy on getting on the good foot.
If they can win this game, which they have a chance to… They’ve got some momentum to ride. But you have to figure they’re leaving everything on the ice. There’s only so many times you can keep giving a beyond-maximum effort. They’re outmatched, so they can’t hold back at all. That’s why I think they’ll be overrun in later games in this series.

Remember that the Penguins lost Game 1 against us last year and against Detroit in the Finals. Granted, it was against a much stronger team, but look what happened in the end.

Pretty much every odd man failuere was b/c the carrier played hot potato and got rid too early or waited to late and the d man shut down the passing lane. The one I can remember is the Spacek laying out and Backstrom waiting waaay to late to dish the puck
It was funny…the offense looked so rushed and tried to force plays when they weren’t there, and the defense was the exact opposite.

Not saying we should panic and expect MTL to win in five, but now it’s likely to go six at least. All the talk about coming out of the gates strong was bullshit.
Also, the Penguins dominated us pretty thoroughly and Varlamov stood on his head. Halak was great in the first, but we didn’t force him to be great thereafter. We were outworked and outplayed tonight.

def mental. think he (and a lot of other forwards) was clutching his stick too tight, not getting his legs moving and creating space. on the other hand he was covered really well, but im expecting a different ovie next game, he’s usually quick to get back into it.

he did get knocked into the bench’s door, looked awkward and like it could have tweaked his back. that and backs had a cold/flu… BUT i think its also (if not more, mental) just gotta loosen up and start playing like himself. same with most of the forwards, they were just clutching too much. kind of like backs on that 2 on 1…

Theo carried us starting about midway through the second. Really, Theo, Chimera, Laich, Carlson and Schutlz were awesome. Nobody else seemed to play their best. Pretty god damn inexcusable not to show up. Same old story with this team.

Pretty much. That’s a lesson I learned from watching international hockey back when it was my only access to hockey at a high performance level. Hell back in ’03 our national team (Denmark) managed to upset the natural order and stun the hockey world by beating the US and tying Canada at the World Championships. Even though in Hockeyland (read: Sweden) we are mostly seen as the pathetic wannabes.
In hockey anything is possible. It is often unpredictable and hubris often leads to defeat. I find that to be one of the many beauties of the sport.

Tom Poti? I counted 4 times in the opening minutes of the OT that he looked as if he was trying to lose the game for us

Perspective
Everything went perfectly for the Habs tonight: Halak was incredible, they scored a PP goal, they shut down Ovie and the Caps PP.
That’s pretty much the most the Habs can hope for. I doubt they can do it three more times.

Their PP is legit. I wouldn’t act as if they can’t sustain it over 3 games. Look at Coyotes vs. Red Wings. That game was decided by special teams. If Montreal plays tight to the vest and handles the special teams aspect you could see 7 games like last year.

Plus is Semin & Baks got the shoot high memo. More of those will go in eventually.

I probably replace Brads and Gordo with Walker and BMo. That’s the strongest lineup we can put out there. Flash then doesn’t have to play on the second line, as he’s best suited to play on the third line of a championship caliber team. Walker has playoff toughness and just does everything a 4W is supposed to do slightly better than Brads IMO.
Brads and Gordo were pretty good out there, imo.
Brads > Walker. I don’t think we need to fight about this.

Just got back in town from aunts funeral to see OT.
As soon as I saw the Caps had more than 40 SOG I knew they’d lose. Stats are tough to beat in certain cases.

These fuckers have shaved years off my life, and, once again, nothing can come easy for a caps fan. they did not crash the net & the loose pucks near Halak must have been lopsided. we were lucky there was no PS in OT, but had Theo stopped it, perhaps could have gotten the momentum back.
I’m too injured to even throw anything and break it, although I inadvertently snapped a wood coaster in two after the OT goal.

I feel like these Russians have a routine...
Like Malkin and Kovalchuk, Ovechkin and Semin go on the occasional slump. On their off days, they say “what is this? I no want to work today I not play”… Then they wake up one day and say….“know what? I going to beat other team all by myself.”

Oh boy
now that my heart rate is back down under 1000 bpm, this is only the first game. the HABS are not good, we got beat by ourselves. Caps came out slugish after the first, and and dint make halak work very hard for his 45 saves. I think the caps will take this, get pissed and end up rolling the next four games. This habs team is NOT good, no way they can hang with the caps any more, not a chance
eh…it may have looked good at times but when it broke down, it was bad as usual. i’m sure montreal will take 1 of 4 every game on the PP.

To be honest, I don’t expect much more from Ovechkin defensively. I didn’t notice it until the replay but watch Green’s head — completely to the puck. He stays with Gionta, who was his man, ties him up, the puck sails through the slot, out the other side, no harm done.

Putting semin on the line means at they’ll actually pass instead of skate and then decide what to do too late (Backstrom) or skate and then shoot instead of pass because there’s twelve guys on him (Ovechkin).

A couple numbers that stand out:
- Poti led all Caps skaters in ice time.
- Carlson was 2nd.
- Both were +1.
Let’s hold off on lambasting Poti for the time being. We all get angry when he fails to clear the puck but maybe we have developed selective memory for him. I dunno.
Also, Carlson is pure awesome. That guy is going to be a force for the next decade, health permitting.
When Poti is leading the team in ice time something is wrong.
As for Carlson, boy do I love that kid. Sad that he’s stuck covering up for vets mistakes.

I saw 3 specific examples of Poti fucking up in OT only to get lucky and not let a goal go in.
Can’t say the same for when he made a horrible clear that lead to MTL’s 1st.
I will say though, someone along with what u said, the rest of the team blew nuts also. . .not just fucking poti

Thoughts
Spacek and Hamrlik completely owned Ovechkin tonight, no space, no shots nothing.
They have done that all season and will continue to do that unless our top line creates space.
0-3 on the PP will not cut it in the post season
Theo and Halak both stood on their heads for their teams, but Montreal outworked us, and tired us in the 2nd, parts of the 3rd, and OT.
Reffing wasn’t stellar tonight, phantom call on Corvo, missed tripping on a semi -breakway for Montreal.
If the Caps can keep bringing the energy they had in the first, and find a way to solve Spacek and Hamrlik, this series ends on the 5th game.
This is not one and out, there are more games, more goals, and less defensive breakdowns to happen.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think the officiating had much to do with it. But who knows, you call one on the Habs to even out the delay of game and Green may not be in that situation because the game might have been over.
