Trying to decide if I have an opinion on who we play….

Don’t really want to see a NYR matchup for the second year in a row, not b/c I fear them but b/c it’s boring to play them again (though admittedly, neither team is really the same). Then again, always fun watching Torts inevitable explosions.

MTL might be nice…the Russians taking on a Canadian team. Will cause Don Cherry fits if we win…

I like the Washington Capitals.

My logic is this:

a) Jose in Montreal has the potential to go wrong
b) If the Rangers win the Flyers miss the playoffs

Let’s go Rangers!

In one more period’s time, the Western Conference matchups will all be set. Chicago and Detroit tied and LA trails Colorado 1-0.

by sixsevenfiftysix on Apr 11, 2010 4:35 PM EDT reply actions

What you need to know: Chicago wins they’re the one seed, lose and San Jose’s the one. Seeds 5-7 will be made up of Nashville, Detroit, and LA. If Detroit loses in regulation they’ll be behind Nashville but otherwise they’ll be ahead of them. If LA wins they’d pass Nashville but otherwise they’ll be behind them. If LA gets just one point and Detroit gets none, LA would be ahead of Detroit.

That made it really clear, didn’t it???

You know, maybe—just maybe—a shootout here would force the NHL to either a) get rid of it for future years or b) greatly diminish the importance/frequency of shootouts. But they could just as easily be like “wasn’t that exciting? Why would we want to get rid of the shootout?”

Yeah, of course. The shootout is stupid whether this goes to one or not. But in the NFL, it took an honest-to-goodness case of a huge game being decided by a terrible overtime system for them to be forced to make a change. Maybe that would happen here.

Here’s a similar story. There was am obnoxious swim team who won every meet for several years running (where my younger daughter’s arch rival swam for). I disliked that team so much that I promised to buy a card of congratulations to the first coach to beat that team. So, lo and behold, what team did that deed. My daughter’s team.

So, it will probably be the Caps who do it.

If you mean the idea that the NHL tries to send subconscious messages about “dirty plays” by showing players making hits and saying “This should be a penalty” and “This shouldn’t,” I can buy that.

But at the same time, I don’t think it extends solely to Crosby. It’s going to extend to most star players, because most star players are the people who sell tickets, and you don’t want them to be impeded.

by Knee high to a duck on Apr 11, 2010 7:48 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t think it’s the case in the NHL like it could be in the NBA for several reasons, the biggest of which being that outside of baseball, basketball is the easiest sport to influence individual stats on. You call a foul and the offended player is going to get two free shots – shots he’s probably going to make.

In the NHL, it’s going to be obvious if you give Crosby or any other players penalty shots. There’s NO WAY in the NHL to directly influence individual stats as a referee. Team, I guess, but I don’t think that’s going on. Do I think that the NHL will have rooting interests in 3-2 series? Yeah. But I don’t think they’re going to encourage referees accordingly.

League talking to refs: “Oh hey it would be great if crosby could score some goals today eh?”

Refs to league: “Oh yea i know eh. no worries if make some questionable calls the pens will get the PP at good times in the game so corbsy can score”

Leauge to refs: “sounds good man!”

I've often thought of becoming a golf club

by Amacaps on Apr 11, 2010 8:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Problem with this is there’s no guarantee that Crosby scores on those Power Plays. Even if that was the case, I’d imagine the NHL would say that about Crosby every game. I just don’t buy they’d do this.

I don’t think the refs make that much of an effort to give someone an advantage like that.
That being said, i feel like alot of refs have prejudice against certain players or teams that influence their calls

Bah-Ram-Ewe, Ovechkin will wreck you. Fear the Furious Fleece!

by kingzman264 on Apr 11, 2010 8:07 PM EDT up reply actions

I can completely buy this. I think it’s highly possible the NHL showed a few videos of players including Semin diving to referees to say “here’s the difference between a dive and a trip.” I could see a few referees taking that to mean “Semin is a diver, he probably won’t be tripped.”

Whoop Whoop Caps

by Whiter Mage on Apr 11, 2010 8:10 PM EDT up reply actions

For sure. And i think stuff like that is certainly more plausible then refs actively keeping certain people down, or other people up.

In that same example with Semin, i think players have certain reputations (whether merited or not) amongst refs that perpetuate the way they are penalized or, maybe even, not protected (by calls).
Vinny Leavalier as a big talker, Avery as a caustic insulter/instigator, Crosby as a clean player, maybe Datsyuk as a straight arrow, Semin as a diver, and Ovechkin as an aggressive player

Whats with teams playing the final games for stats?

Vancouver- Coach said he was going to play an offensive D with henrik sedin, and getting double shifted

Pens- Crosby’s ice time (most of any pen in game…especially at this point in season), his sudden change in style of play

And sadly….

Caps- Ovechkin getting semin on his line a few times. Not as bad as the others…but still had to put in in

Kessel is a good player but trading a possibly lottery pick and at least one other pick and other stuff is too costly, in my humble opinion.

Speaking of bad moves by Toronto, I now learn that Tuuka Rask was an ex-Maple Leafs prospect. (And that’s the team that suffered with Vesa Toskala in goal.)

Guess the Leafs are the de-factor farm team for the Bruins. If the Bruins need help, just contact Brian Burke.
