Trying to decide if I have an opinion on who we play….
Don’t really want to see a NYR matchup for the second year in a row, not b/c I fear them but b/c it’s boring to play them again (though admittedly, neither team is really the same). Then again, always fun watching Torts inevitable explosions.
MTL might be nice…the Russians taking on a Canadian team. Will cause Don Cherry fits if we win…
I like the Washington Capitals.
My logic is this:
a) Jose in Montreal has the potential to go wrong
b) If the Rangers win the Flyers miss the playoffs
Let’s go Rangers!

In one more period’s time, the Western Conference matchups will all be set. Chicago and Detroit tied and LA trails Colorado 1-0.
by sixsevenfiftysix on Apr 11, 2010 4:35 PM EDT reply actions
What you need to know: Chicago wins they’re the one seed, lose and San Jose’s the one. Seeds 5-7 will be made up of Nashville, Detroit, and LA. If Detroit loses in regulation they’ll be behind Nashville but otherwise they’ll be ahead of them. If LA wins they’d pass Nashville but otherwise they’ll be behind them. If LA gets just one point and Detroit gets none, LA would be ahead of Detroit.
That made it really clear, didn’t it???

I’m going to be so happy in a little while when the only remaining scenario is “Buffalo wins in regulation they are the two seed, otherwise New Jersey is the two seed”!

You know, maybe—just maybe—a shootout here would force the NHL to either a) get rid of it for future years or b) greatly diminish the importance/frequency of shootouts. But they could just as easily be like “wasn’t that exciting? Why would we want to get rid of the shootout?”

Know what you’re saying, but it’s no different than losing a point in a shootout earlier in the season in terms of the effect on either team.
Yeah, of course. The shootout is stupid whether this goes to one or not. But in the NFL, it took an honest-to-goodness case of a huge game being decided by a terrible overtime system for them to be forced to make a change. Maybe that would happen here.

Fuck the Islanders. Only like 3 people on that team can actually play hockey. . .
ATL shut-out the Pens, the least they could do was maybe hold then to 2 goals. . .in the first period.
I mean, they should be looking out for Ovechkin’s title!!!

Never thought you’d hear me say it but Go Stamkos. I can’t stand Crosby. He reminds me of my younger daughter’s biggest arch-rival from HS. A smug, cocky, backstabbing db who seems to get all the breaks.

I don’t think he is going to get that many ponts. Hopefully he doesn’t tie with Ovie either. . .
The Hart will be a toss-up.
But if Ovie doesn’t win it, Sid is definitely not going to win it
I will be really pissed if Henrik gets it. The man is a secondary assist machine, but definitely not as good as Ovie.
And then if a goalie gets it. . .then. . .what ever
I hope Ovie gets the Conn Smythe though. . .

I think he has been just below Sedin and Ovie as far as voting goes. He can only make up so much ground in one quarter.
Which is why I think Ovie will make it. Sedin has gained alot of support in the 2nd half, Crosby has garnered accolades all ear but not as much as Ovie i think (and hope, and pray) But Ovie has been getting votes all i year i think.
But idk how the voters are, that is just how i think theyve voted

If you mean the idea that the NHL tries to send subconscious messages about “dirty plays” by showing players making hits and saying “This should be a penalty” and “This shouldn’t,” I can buy that.
But at the same time, I don’t think it extends solely to Crosby. It’s going to extend to most star players, because most star players are the people who sell tickets, and you don’t want them to be impeded.
Whoop Whoop Caps
of course it does. But im talking about the league talking to refs trying to manipulate the stats and such
I've often thought of becoming a golf club
No, NBA followers definitely thought that.

Yeah. The Lakers series with the Kings was pretty shady and then the Mavs/Heat series was the icing on the cake.

I don’t think it’s the case in the NHL like it could be in the NBA for several reasons, the biggest of which being that outside of baseball, basketball is the easiest sport to influence individual stats on. You call a foul and the offended player is going to get two free shots – shots he’s probably going to make.
In the NHL, it’s going to be obvious if you give Crosby or any other players penalty shots. There’s NO WAY in the NHL to directly influence individual stats as a referee. Team, I guess, but I don’t think that’s going on. Do I think that the NHL will have rooting interests in 3-2 series? Yeah. But I don’t think they’re going to encourage referees accordingly.
Whoop Whoop Caps
I’m sure its not anywhere near to the extent of the NBA, but i just have this feeling that there is some form of it.
I've often thought of becoming a golf club
How could an NHL referee directly influence Crosby getting an extra point or two in a game. I’m curious, and would like to know.
Whoop Whoop Caps
League talking to refs: “Oh hey it would be great if crosby could score some goals today eh?”
Refs to league: “Oh yea i know eh. no worries if make some questionable calls the pens will get the PP at good times in the game so corbsy can score”
Leauge to refs: “sounds good man!”
I've often thought of becoming a golf club
Problem with this is there’s no guarantee that Crosby scores on those Power Plays. Even if that was the case, I’d imagine the NHL would say that about Crosby every game. I just don’t buy they’d do this.
Whoop Whoop Caps
though it does not guarantee he scores…it certainly helps his chances.
Hey i’m sure it would be a crazy longshot for it to actually be true. I dont want to sound like a crazy person whos all like “conspiracy!!!” I just wanna say that i really wouldn’t be surprised
I've often thought of becoming a golf club
I don’t think the refs make that much of an effort to give someone an advantage like that.
That being said, i feel like alot of refs have prejudice against certain players or teams that influence their calls
Bah-Ram-Ewe, Ovechkin will wreck you. Fear the Furious Fleece!
I can completely buy this. I think it’s highly possible the NHL showed a few videos of players including Semin diving to referees to say “here’s the difference between a dive and a trip.” I could see a few referees taking that to mean “Semin is a diver, he probably won’t be tripped.”
Whoop Whoop Caps
For sure. And i think stuff like that is certainly more plausible then refs actively keeping certain people down, or other people up.
In that same example with Semin, i think players have certain reputations (whether merited or not) amongst refs that perpetuate the way they are penalized or, maybe even, not protected (by calls).
Vinny Leavalier as a big talker, Avery as a caustic insulter/instigator, Crosby as a clean player, maybe Datsyuk as a straight arrow, Semin as a diver, and Ovechkin as an aggressive player
Bah-Ram-Ewe, Ovechkin will wreck you. Fear the Furious Fleece!

And enough people in that series score goals so that the Caps are victorious in 4 of those games.

Considering how bad the Islanders were playing earlier, i am pleasently surprised with the score right now. . .especially how this reflects open the Pens

Giving up 5 goals to the Islanders is bad any way you cut it. . .
I don’t think it’s huge. MAF isnt in, and a few of their guys are injured. . .but its 5 goals. . .
Just like people here would be worried if we gave up 5 goals to Boston earlier today

well most of my predictions, I thought the NYR-PHI game would end in OT not SO.
But I was on the mark with Sid scoring 2 (so far) and Stamkos tying him with one
and ovechkin not scoring
and the flyers scoring on that PP in the third.

Whats with teams playing the final games for stats?
Vancouver- Coach said he was going to play an offensive D with henrik sedin, and getting double shifted
Pens- Crosby’s ice time (most of any pen in game…especially at this point in season), his sudden change in style of play
And sadly….
Caps- Ovechkin getting semin on his line a few times. Not as bad as the others…but still had to put in in
I've often thought of becoming a golf club
There’s nothing wrong with any of these.
