Sunday Caps Clips: Bruins @ Caps Game Day
Your savory breakfast links:
- Previews of today's game against the B's from Vogs, Peerless, RtR and NHL.com, and be sure to check out our SB Nation partner Stanley Cup of Chowder for coverage from the other side of today's match up.
- To refresh your memory, this is the last of four meetings on the (regular) season between the Caps and Bruins, with the Caps taking a couple of 4-1 decisions, on Opening Night (seems like forever ago, doesn't it?) and again in early February and a 3-2 victory earlier in the week.
- Notes from yesterday's practice. [DCEx, CI]
- Great piece on Alex Ovechkin from Steinz. [WaPo]
- More amicus briefs filed on Mike Green's Norris behalf. [RMNB, The Checking Line]
- The long-awaited Karl Alzner post sees the light of Internet day. (Incidentally, John Walton called Alzner "the best defenseman in the AHL" on yesterday's edition of Japers' Rink Radio.) [Corey Masisak]
- Bruce Boudreau participated in a League-wide conference call on Thursday, and here's the transcript. [FanPost]
- For likely the strangest place you'll ever see a Caps jersey, check out picture number five. [National Post (h/t @truebluefan329)]
- Speaking of jerseys... worst jersey foul ever? [Mr. Irrelevant]
- Per the HHoF, on this date back in 1985, "Mike Gartner scored the winning goal at 21:23 of overtime to lead the Capitals to a 2-1 win over the Islanders in Washington, in Game 2 of the Patrick Division Semi-Finals. "
- Finally, happy 32nd birthday to Ben Clymer, happy 40th birthday to Trevor Linden, and happy 49th birthday to Ron Jones.

Super awesome Ovi article on the front page of the Post today. Way to go, Steinz!
I have a C on my heart.
Read it online yesterday, did not know it was going to be on A1. Must bring in newspaper!
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
Alex Ovechkin, more important than the death of Polish leaders!

Ovi needs 4 points to retake lead in the points race after Sedin’s 4 point effort last night. And Stamkos tied him for the goal lead. So he might have some extra motivation tonight…
Reminder — it’s three. Tiebreaker is goals, and the season is over.
Like the Caps needed motivation anyway.
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
nice. 3 can happen! no game for hank today. i’m more interested in the richard, personally, because i think AO has the potential to put up a record streak if he can stay healthy in the years to come. but good to know both are within reach with a good performance this afternoon.

Gotta say that after reading the Canucks “main” boards, they really, really, really want this for Henrik. I’d say way more than we want it for Ovi.
Yeah, I’ll be happy if Ovi gets it because he may not get the MVP or Rocket Richard this year and we may not even win the Stanley Cup. Plus the fact that he is competing for the scoring title is amazing given all the games he has missed. Let’s not forget he left the CAR and CHI games in the first period so he has missed 12 games if you count those. However, I won’t be upset if Henrik gets it. He has played really well this year with and without his brother and deserves the recognition.

That’s what a lot of Canucks fans are saying whenever anyone mentions that Ovi has missed games—that who knows how many points Henrik would have put up if Daniel had been healthy. They feel like Ovi would have been third in points if Daniel had been able to play a full season and that Daniel and Henrik would be fighting it out for the top spot.
By this logic, we could be arguing that Backy would be leading the league if Ovi hadn’t missed those games.
Sometimes, you really just want to hit a b**ch.
Good point and Knuble missed a bunch of games too. We can speculate about this all day.

Evander Kane made me quite, quite happy last night. And it was a good team effort by the Thrash too.
Maybe 3rd seed will help you though, if NYR/PHI works it out so that the B’s are in 6th.
If the Flyers win, i’d still take them. I’m not cheering against my team for their benefit. So i’m just hoping the Rags win

Don’t think you can get the Bruins at this point. If the flyers win, they get the 7th, and if the Rags win, Montreal gets it. Boston is 1 point clear of either team regardless of what they do today.

The Goddard-Boulton fight was certainly epic. But it lacked one very important aspect that the Kane-Cooke fight had; Matt Cooke getting knocked out by an 18 year old rookie. In one punch.

While not a big fan of fighting, Kane vs Cooke was epic. Makes you wonder if it has any effect on his play going forward, now that someone finally leveled him. Bet he had no idea Kane could swing a punch like that, because it’s not his style to engage someone who can best him in a fight.
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
He should’ve done his homework. I think Kane was known to throw down in the WHL, wasn’t he?

You’re right, but actually Cooke went after Kane because Evander had the temerity to stand up to Crosby, who was getting chippy with Kane (including some classic Crosby crosschecks to the head).

Yeah, but I’m worrying about one beast before antother. And Crosby would need a hatty to jump in front of Ovi and Stammer. I just don’t see it happening.
And if you mean points for Crosby, he would need what, 6? to tie Sedin. He’d have to have one hell of a game, and the only person to do that today is Ovi!!
on a road game no less…but Sid’s playing the Isles, so it’s not entirely out of the question. I’m just hoping for a Thrasher-esque game from the Isles. Roly to the rescue?
Think it’s Florida stoning Stamkos that would make me most happy. 3 points is less hard for Ovie to overcome.
Pens just played the Islanders a few days ago and beat them down epically. That’s the one where Crosby had the 50th, and then didn’t.

Rocking the Red since 1975
Alzner Piece
Typical Corey brilliance: well written, well thought-out, and insightful.
I know Bruce is a good coach, but stuff like this drives me nuts:
"We like to have three [lefties] and three [righties] whenever possible. That’s the biggest difference between the two of them. That’s it."
Let me see if I’ve got this right – Bruce would happily dress an inferior player just to balance out righty-lefty on defense?
This makes some sense in light of the fact that we have more lefty than righty defense: it’s 5-3 right now, and will be 5-4 once the Juice is loose. However, if you look at the lefty defensemen we’ve got (Schultz, Erskine, Sloan, Poti and ShaMo), the only one I’d clearly put ahead of Alzner is Schultz (although I’d reluctantly say that Poti is probably better than Alzner 5v5, but that’s only due to NHL experience, which Alzner isn’t getting while stuck down in Hershey).
So Bruce is saying that Alzner is worse than Erskine, Sloan and ShaMo. Hmmm. If he’s talking about the new-and-improved 2010 version of ShaMo, maybe I buy that.
Still, the fact that Bruce is obsessed with righty-lefty matchups, combined with the fact that the Caps already have 3 lefties under contract next year (Poti, Erskine and Sloan) and one who is a virtual lock to come back as an RFA (Schultz) means that Karl had better get used to driving the Hershey Highway, since it looks as though he’s buried on the depth chart again next year. (Man, those Erskine and Sloan contracts are the gift that keeps on giving.)
For those who would point out Bruce’s comments about Alzner being a key component of this team next year, I’ll point out that he said much the same after Karl was sent down in 08-09. How’d that turn out?

I agree for the most part. I would posit that if Karl can’t fight past 2M in nachos Erskine and Sloan for top 6 next year, it won’t be based upon skill, but a rather obvious lack of BB trust. So I guess my question is, how the hell does the best defenseman in the AHL get to build that trust? Flat out mystifying handling this year.

Anybody know what the lines are going to look like today?

Yeah, I don’t believe they do a morning skate on these early gamedays, so there’s really nothing to go by.
Given the attainable milestones, I’m guessing that none of Ovie, Backstrom, Semin or Green sit. Outside of that is anyone’s guess, except Varly is the starting keeper for sure.

BB did say that the Carebears would not unite. They only did because he sat g-pa slippers, and that the original top line would be back.

Did he caveat that by saying, “unless we’re down by a goal or two with 10 minutes left in the 3rd”?

I think he expects us all to know that by now. And that in that situation he will only run 2 lines

YAY for being able to watch hockey today!
"Hey anyway I can get my name out there 30 years from now is great," Steckel said. "They will be like, ‘Who was that guy?’ Then they’ll look at the stats and say, ‘Well, at least that guy was really good on face-offs.’"
Boo for daytime game! I’m not gonna be able to watch this one. Going rock climbing for a friends b-day. But I’m not missing any playoff games. Told my boss I can work Saturdays but no weekdays (im a teenager, its a spring/summer job). Hopefully we don’t get any Sat day games

So, correct me if I’m wrong, but are we locked in to face the Habs in the first round? No one’s going to catch the Bruins, they’ve got the 6th spot locked. The winner of the Flyers/Rangers game will end the season tied with the Habs at 88 points, and both will win the tiebreaker (Flyers have more wins, Rangers more goals). Am I reading all this correct?
I think the second tiebreaker is Points earned Head to Head, in which case the Habs finish 7th (they went 3-1 against the Rags this year).

So, Rags win and we play them. Rags lose and we play the Habs.
Only time I’ll ever say this… go rags

If anyone is interested my photos from yesterday’s practice are HERE. It was only a morning skate but still interesting.

Some Bäckström quotes from the Swedish media
About reaching 100 points
It feels really good of course, but I’m quite frankly more relieved than anything else.
When you get that close to breaking the barrier you want to do it.
I was getting pretty close and I’ve been thinking about it a lot actually. It’s a big deal over here and yeah I admit that it have affected me.
I didn’t think I would reach it but then our unit started to connect again and the points followed suit. The Celebration
Me and my brother and a couple of friends from my hometown celebrated together. We went to Capital Grille for dinner and had a glas of champagne.. I kinda of though it was worth it.The puck
Our equipment manager have the puck for now that’s probably for the best otherwise it would probably be gone by now, hehe.About the season
I feel stronger and I have gradually put on some more muscle mass and that gives me the confidence to shoot more.About reaching 100 points again, but from a different interview
I’m not gonna lie it feels incredible. If someone told me two years ago that I would reach one hundred points and that It would feel like this.. I would not believe them. I was so close and I really wanted it.. it’s a milestone after all. I guess sometimes individual stuff can feel good too.
What can I say I’m a JP fangirl. I will follow him into the darkest and filthiest of alleys, even the comment section at Puck Daddy.
