I feel like Doughty is getting the opposite of the lifetime-achievement award that Chara got last season. While he has been awesome, there’s no way that, for the entire season, he’s been better than Keith and Green. I also disagree with the statement that neither of them can match Doughty’s physical game.
I have to go. But if I find one single dog hair when I get back, I'll rub... sand... in your dead little eyes. I also need you to buy sand. I don't know if they grade it, but... coarse.

I don’t know that you even vote Doughty in as a finalist this season. People are getting so caught up in the rage that they assume he’s had a Norris-level season, which he hasn’t, if you compare him to Green or Keith.
And yeah, not buying the physicality thing. I’ve seen Keith and Doughty on a regular basis and if anything Keith is more physical (right now).

SI wrote an article on him, one of their typical slurp jobs, and called him a big hitter and physical presence.
I feel like SI is a meme-setter for the traditional sports media. Or maybe they’re just a really good meme reflector. Either way, if you see it in SI, you can rest assured it’s an article of faith in the guys that write about sports.

Doughty and Green are two sides of the same coin. Voters can look “smart” by being among the early folks to “discover” the awesomeness that is Doughty. Conversely, they can look “analytical” by picking apart Green’s game, even if those flaws, however real they might have been last year, don’t show up nearly as frequently these days.
If you've read this far...seek help.
Who else would you have as a finalist? Lidstrom’s been great, but with Detroit as it was earlier in the season, his numbers have taken a hit. Pronger’s Flyers also haven’t played well since a nice start, and his numbers aren’t as impressive as before. Myers? (Surprised the kid leads the NHL in giveaways—I thought that was another stat that was Ovie’s).

Agreed. Lidstrom has had yet another great year. He’s going to continuously be underrated (somehow) because he hasn’t put up the numbers he put up during his Norris Trophy reign of terror.
A pretty girl is like a violent crime.
So you’re with me on Green, Keith, and Lidstrom, then?

Doughty compares pretty favorably to Keith and Green in the GVT and Behind the Net stats. He’s not quite on their level offensively, but he’s just as good defensively (and he throws a mean hip check). He shouldn’t place higher than 3rd, but I don’t have a problem with him being a finalist.

Not much left to talk about at this point, is there? Health and the 8 seed are about the only issues still up in the air.
I officially can’t wait for the playoffs to start.

He’s also played more games this year than last, and that doesn’t even include the Olympics. By Game 5 last year, he could hardly lift his glove hand. I’m not too worried.

Look, he did give up 3 last night, at home, to the Flyers. The Caps won’t have too many problems with the Rags.

The comment to that article (as of now):
There’s a reason people say there’s no D in Mike Green, anyone who says otherwise needs to take off their red shaded sunglasses before analyzing his game. With the amount of talent on the ice when he is on it is not hard to have his +/-. His teammate Jeff Schultz is like +37 and I doubt anyone is getting ready to nominate him for a Norris. The guy is an offensive minded player that sits at the point, it’s as simple as that. With the amount of talent the Capitals have on the roster, Green does not have to be as good as guys like Doughty trekking back. He’s still a phenomenal talent but he’s immature and needs to improve in his own end before he deserves a defenseman’s trophy.
There’s a reason in a career that spanned 20 seasons that Paul Coffee only won 3 Norris trophies.
Personally I wouldn’t be surprised if Green isn’t even in the top 3, with guys like Duncan Keith, Chris Pronger, Drew Doughty, Dan Boyle, Niklas Lidstrom all being up there. I’d be very surprised if Keith doesn’t win.
Personally, I think it’s tough to analyze a player if you don’t watch him. Just my two cents.
On a side note, is Dan Boyle really as poor in his own end as commenters like F&B make him out to be? He looked solid in ANA vs SJS last postseason, and I haven’t seen much of him since (don’t recall his TBL days much).

I’d agree, but here is something to chew on. In 1983-1984, Grant Fuhr ranked 17th in GAA among goalies with at least 40 appearances (21 teams at the time; Theodore ranks 26th with 30 teams). Edmonton went 15-4 in the playoffs.

There are goalies on that list capable of stealing a game here or there, but there are only two who I think could steal a series at this point in their career — Miller and Brodeur (Miller for his talent, Brodeur for his ability to intimidate other clubs with his reputation)

I think Brodeur, can, but after the way he choked away the Carolina series last year, I’m not afraid of him. He’s been hot and cold this year, too. Gaudy milestones (wins, shutouts), but also a number of horrible games. And I say this despite the fact that they beat us three out of four — that was a long time ago in hockey life.

Yeah, I also thought he ranked Rinne too high considering Nabokov and Anderson’s years:
Nashville’s sophomore stand-out has turned it on since the Olympics, and will thrive in a playoff setting.
I like Ryan’s stuff normally, but I don’t see how you can say for sure that Pekka will thrive in a playoff setting. He’s never played in one. If it was Dan Ellis, you could say that, because Dan was great against Detroit, but its not.

I don’t think I’ve actually ever watched Rinne play. Seems to be doing pretty well.
Rink Rabbit & newest member of TySlo's fan club.
He has a lot of potential, and just statistically speaking has been the NHL’s best goalie for almost two months. Rinne has three problems, IMO. He a) gets easily flustered when he lets in bad goals. When it rains, it pours with him, b) he plays the puck too much, slinging it around the boards to the opposition when he could pass it to a D, and c) he doesn’t play well until he has four or five starts in a row. This is why the goalie rotation didn’t work earlier. Ellis has no problem playing cold, Peks just can’t do it. He lit up the league once he got into that eighth, ninth consecutive start.

So, he’s your future in goal, you think? Or does Nashville have other options. Cause Dan Ellis seems pretty solid as well. Nashville is probably the team I know least about in the entire league.
Rink Rabbit & newest member of TySlo's fan club.
Yeah, he’s the future. David Poile recently re-signed him to a 2 year, 6 million dollar deal. That deal is to make sure he’s as good as advertised, then I’d guess he gets a career deal at the end of that. We do have other options, though. Chet Pickard in Milwaukee and Anders Lindback in Europe are projected as NHL starters.
Ellis is a fantastic back up who wants to be a starter. He won’t get that here, and I think we lose him in the offseason. Which makes me sad.

Jose Theodore, WSH… Theodore is awfully fragile. He can look great and abysmal in the same game, and there’s no guarantee he’ll be able to hold onto that #1 spot.
Maybe he’s talking about last year. I’m not sure where I’d rank Theo on this year’s list, but fragile seems like an odd word to describe someone who hasn’t lost in regulation since January. Even on his off night’s he’s managed to hold on long enough so the game goes to OT.
Wow. I don’t know if you’re friends with the guy or not. But his head is up his ass. Has he watched any EC hockey this year? Clearly not. MAF and Brian Elliot are definitely below Theo if you go by their play this year, especially since January. But MAF haz a Cup so he will be good when it countz! Whatever. At worst Theo is 6 and he’s probably at 4 or 5.

Iginla is still great, but he’s well past his prime, whereas Kovy is just entering his. Moreover, players like Iginla typically have a pretty precipitous decline phase. So you’d be paying $7m/year for four more years to watch a guy get old.
I think Iggy would benefit from playing with a halfway-decent center, but he’s not turning back the clock.
I'm not JTRS compliant.
They’ll probably have to get rid of that Sutter cabal first before they can even think about doing anything with Iggy (either get him a real center to play with before he is too old, or trade him for the future, and suck for a while)
The idea that they should trade him isn’t crazy. The idea that they could trade him to Boston is ludicrous. If Boston couldn’t afford to keep Phil Kessel under the cap at $5.4m, why on earth would they trade for Iginla’s decline years at a $7m cap hit?
I'm not JTRS compliant.
Thats my point exactly. Boston needs to get younger, not older.

I can only see it if Boston sends massive salary the other way back
In that case, what’s the point from Calgary’s perspective? I guess you’d “shake up the room,” but you’d also run the risk of alienating a lot of fans.
Either way, I think we agree that his suggestion is ludicrous.

I have a feeling the Flames fans are alienated already. That team is a mess. I’d almost say that of all the Canadian teams they’re in the worst shape. I know the Leafs suck (and the Oil, I suppose) and they have no draft picks, but they at least have some sort of direction (and Brian Burke robbing the NCAA market) going on over there.

I prefer to give the Hart Trophy to the NHL’s best player period. I think Sedin, Crosby and Miller qualify that way, too, but if you keep it simple, the only answer to the question, “Who is the NHL’s best player?” is Alexander Ovechkin. It’s Ovie for the Hart for the third straight year.
This is an excellent example of someone not “out-thinking” themselves. Who’s the best player in the NHL this year? Ovechkin. . . Then Ovechkin gets the Hart Trophy. Done.

I wouldnt if I were them. Ovies the captain of the team and even though Clark steered us through a tough part in our growing up as a team, he was traded for a reason and for that reason I think it was better off for the team.
You also have to consider whether Clark would even want it. It would be a nice gesture by the Caps but Clark is a proud guy and a student of the game – he wouldn’t take it.
He ushered the team from doormat to SCF contender. He was there for the entire rise of the core of the team and mentored them. How could he not feel a connection to the team? I’d hope if it was a real option he’d accept it.

He hasn’t been a part of the team in 2010. Wasn’t here for the winning streak, not here for the playoffs. I could be wrong but I’d be surprised if Clark thought his name should be on the Cup under those circumstances. I love the guy, just think he’d want to play his way on it or not be on it at all.
Ovie can just tap into his badboy persona and scratch “Clarkie” into the surface when the officials aren’t looking.

Since it was being discussed in the post-game thread:
Washington coach Bruce Boudreau said Ovechkin was joking with him earlier in the week by “bugging” him for the day off on Sunday. It would be pretty hard to imagine him not being on the ice, especially with these individual awards within his grasp.

"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
lol I would be lying if I said I wasn’t a little worried when BB said Ovie wanted the day off – if only because he doesn’t seem like the type of guy that didn’t want to be on the ice if there was nothing (physically) wrong with him.
It just sounded wrong when Bruce said it; I had the feeling it was a joke to see how riled up people might get. We all know there is no way Ovechkin voluntarily sits out a game.

Agree. It’s a shame though because I think Andy Brinkley brings a lot to the table. Guy really knows his stuff and he’s pretty fair in his assessment. That accent is tough to get through but as far as hockey goes he is on point.

I love the NSH guys. They are perfect for that market and genuinely seem to love calling games together. I always imagine them doing the game in rocking chairs.

I’m not a J/D fan but it fits the profile to a degree. Could throw in a straw hat but I don’t want to pile on the stereotypes.

Nah, I wouldn’t go there. But I do think the NSH broadcast has a country feel to it. Great for that market.

They did absolute wonders for promoting the game and actually teaching hockey on air in the early going. Crisp really knows his stuff (you have to to win a Cup as a coach), even if he sounds funny.

Oh they definitely know their stuff and sound like lifelong friends. I absolutely believe they did a ton to teach hockey to the area. That’s one of the most important jobs of a broadcast team, IMO.

Yeah, Crisp would stop and explain something simple and numerous fans were gained because of this. They don’t have to do it as much anymore. I did hear them explain offsides once, though.

That’s ok. As the fan bases advances with their knowledge it’s harder to find the line, IMO. You need to always be cognizant of the new fans but your established fans want a little more substance. I doubt you ever had the privilege of watching an MSG feed when John Davidson used to do their color commentary, but he was hands down the best I’ve ever heard. Razor in Dallas is probably the best guy currently but JD was a master.

FS-TN interviewed Razor the other day, he was great.

I can buy that as well. Errey calls the game like he’s still on the team and is about to run down and take a shift.
The other night when he had the picture taken with PIT greats and then called the game for the Pens… classic Errey. Not that I blame him for taking part in the historic event, but that is sooooooooo Errey. He doesn’t just work for PIT, he’s part of the Pens organization, in his mind.

I love them too, with the exception that occasionally they tell each other a joke and it screws with the play by play because they get to laughing.

J.P., I feel so embarrassed that you linked to my worst recap so far. I was feeling really tired and did a quick one, as opposed to some earlier games. Probably no more recaps though, after Boston, except for Fri/Sat and after May 15. Silly high school.
By the way, where do you find the takeaway/giveaway/hits numbers for each game? I’ve just used Chrome’s ctrl-f (which lists the total number of matches) to quickly tally totals, but otherwise I’ve had to hand-count through the play-by-play.
Top class show again, Mr. Pepper and Mr. Waxman (pardon spelling). You’re right—Walton is a jovial guy.

Yeah I think they might. But they can’t face the Caps I don’t think so even a loss doesn’t put them into the meat grinder. They either play NJD or BUF and I’m not sure how strong their preference is either. I’d have to imagine being healthy is more important than the opponent at this point. Maybe they’d go all out if a win saved them from 8 but they are already guaranteed to finish above 8.

I want to see a first round upset (not us) so that PIT/NJD is the second round. If PIT or NJD is the upset, even better, but BUF seems the likely choice. And if PIT or NJD is the upset then that lets us avoid Miller in the second round. One 2-4 upset in the first round paves the road for the Caps to only face one real dangerous team in the EC.
A pretty girl is like a violent crime.
I hadn’t really thought about it that way, but a PIT/NJD first round would be amazing. And there’s no question that we could take BOS in 5 games. I also feel like a WSH/PIT or a WSH/NJD (less so, obviously) ECF is Bettman’s wetdream.

LOL. Just watched the replay of the NYR/PHI game last night. No shock the PHI crew awards Mike Richards the player of the game. I know he had two goals, but I have to think there was someone better on NYR… maybe the guy that made two HUGE stops in the final five minutes to preserve the win. I dunno.

With Boston’s win the entirety of the eastern playoff standings seem to rely on Montreal winning or losing their next game.
What’s important to us is that Boston is officially out of the running for facing the caps in round 1 as they can’t drop lower than 7th. I’ve estimated the following chances are could happen.
Bos win they clinch 6
Bos Lose clinch 7, Mon win they clich 6.
Mon lose out of playoffs IF, Phi win(clinch 7), NYR win(clinch 8)
Mon lose(clinch 8), Phi win(clinch 7), NYR lose out of playoffs
Mon lose clinch 8, NYR win(7), Phi lose out
Mon win clinch 7, phil win clinch 8
Mon Win clinch 7, phil lose, NYR win clinch 8

It looks like there are a few other things wrong here (also, no mention of any three-point games?), but it’s definitely possible that I’m just misinterpreting your language on some of them. Too bad we can’t get them. He’s going to be so burned out so soon. BOS basically plays 2 D pairs. Hopefully he rests tomorrow and gives AO some more open ice.
A pretty girl is like a violent crime.
On a brighter side, they just may sneak by the Devils. Chara’s endurance is amazing – but even he gets tired eventually. He may last a series though…
If they do get the Devils, that just may be the most boring series ever. Wouldn’t be surprised if at least one of the games goes scoreless into OT.
Good thing the Devs got Kovalchuk! That may be a 1-1 game heading into OT now! (The one scored by Kovy, the over scored against because Kovy didn’t back check).
I’m a little bummed it won’t be Caps-B’s. Just moved to Portland, Maine, and was hoping for that series so I may have a chance to go catch a playoff game in Boston. Oh well.

Ovi’s goal for his 500th point has long been my favorite of the season and a highlight of the streak. Ovi does only the most stylish of milestones. As a fan, riding that streak with the guys was fun—the puck seemed to go in no matter who on the team was shooting. Here’s hoping that hockey high happens in the playoffs.

Indeed. Kane just threw one punch and Cooke was out. There was just another fight that lasted for about a full minute and a half. And more importantly to us, the score is 0-0 about halfway through the second.

Speaking of the Bears, is it my imagination or has Neuvirth disappeared from them? Last I heard, he won a game there last Saturday and then the Caps didn’t want him playing Sunday. I just assumed that they didn’t want him doing back to backs right after recovering from an injury. But he hasn’t played since. Or even been the backup.

That’s the third time this year. The people who keep lobbying for Varly to be sent back down and be replaced with Neuvy don’t realize that Neuvy is also injury prone. Or at least that’s the case this year.
