Wednesday is AHL 'Clear Day' for Hershey
The AHL’s Clear Day deadline, when all 29 teams must submit their 22-man Clear Day lists, is set for Wednesday, Mar. 10, at 3:00 p.m. ET. Only those players listed on a team’s Clear Day roster are eligible to compete in the remainder of the AHL regular season and in the 2010 Calder Cup Playoffs, unless emergency conditions arise as a result of recall, injury or suspension.

That’s a fairly large loophole there.
That being said, will they include three goalies on their clear day roster?

Here’s their Clear Day Roster from last year, for reference.
Tim Leone has a good piece on this year’s deadline here, including these nuggets:
The likely prospect of not having Carlson will factor into Hershey’s approach to the AHL trade deadline, which looms Wednesday.
Adding defensive depth already was considered a priority. Adding defensive depth with a player who can at least partly help defray the loss of Carlson’s offensive skills would especially help.
"If there’s something available to us that we feel we can improve our team," Bears president-GM Doug Yingst said, "we’re certainly looking at possibly adding some defensive depth."
Yingst said the organizational plan is to still include Carlson on Hershey’s clear day roster, which must be submitted to the AHL Wednesday.
"It’s my understanding he has to be papered back down [in an AHL reassignment to make him eligible for the clear day roster]," Yingst said.
In a dream scenario, former Hershey defenseman Lawrence Nycholat, currently playing for the Manitoba Moose, would be an ideal acquisition in light of the Carlson situation. But he is believed to be untouchable.
…
Remember, for all the hullabaloo generated by clear day rosters, they don’t tend to have much practical impact.
There are so many machinations available — among them substitution exemptions for players who are injured, (wink) "injured" (wink) or on NHL recall — that teams basically can play who they want regardless of who is or isn’t on the clear day roster.

Sorry, that didn’t answer your question. This does:
Hershey still has three goalies: Michal Neuvirth, Braden Holtby and Jason Bacashihua. AHL playoff rosters are due to be set Wednesday, and only two goalies can be included.
A decision will have to be made between Holtby and Bacashihua. French said it’s theoretically possible all three would remain, with one going on the playoff roster’s in-residence list, but that isn’t the most likely scenario.
“I think everything is on the table,” French said.

So, yes, that is more of a loopsinkhole and “everything is on the table” in the sense that “Bacashihua will be receiving his phone calls in area code 704 after about 3:30pm today.”
And why mention Nycholat if he is inconceivable “untouchable?”

There is much Nycholat love in Hershey. Very much.

So he’s not untouchable, just expensive.

I’m confused. I assumed you were suggesting he’d be with the Stingrays, but that’s a North Caroina area code. Or did you get confused instead?
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
The decision is pretty straightforward to me. You’re allowed to replace a player who is called up or injured. If Neuvirth and Holtby are both on the roster, then Cash will never play. Therefore, you put Neuvirth and Holtby on the clear day roster, and keep Cash in residence. And if either Neuvirth or Holtby is hurt or called up, then you still have the right to play Cash.
Following this logic, it’s unlikely, but it wouldn’t surprise me at all of the two goalies on the clear day are Varlamov and Neuvirth…

Nope. The rays just traded their backup goalie so they can send Cash down and have Neuvy and Holtby on the Clear Day roster.
Varly would have to be assigned to HER to be eligible to be on the CD roster. Which would be hard since he’s backing up Theo tonight.

I think it’s more likely Holtby would be sent down, to gain playoff experience as a starter. He ain’t going to play in Hershey unless there are injuries.

Stingrays just traded away a goaltender. For a forward.
Now helping to keep an eye on all things Gr8 at Alex Ovetjkin.
The Stingrays had 3 goalies since Ford returned from his call-up to Texas (AHL) so the Stingrays still have 2 goalies on the roster at this time.
Todd Ford and Shane Connelly.
The Stingrays are also struggling to dress a complete roster of forwards and dmen due to injuries and all the call-ups by AHL teams so they traded the spare goalie for a forward.
reply fail, sorry about that
Also, I have thought for awhile – even before Carlson was called up, and Leone started reporting recently – that the Bears need some defensive depth.
With Finley and Godfrey both injured, there aren’t any dmen in SC on an AHL or NHL contract at this time that are available for a call-up since Yeo and Wellar are already on call-up at this time. Obviously, they can call up an ECHL player not under AHL or NHL contract to another team and NCAA FAs and CHL FAs are also possibilities.
Unless Hershey manages to bring someone else in and does it without sending anyone out, there really aren’t many issues regarding the CDR, even before one factors in the loopholes….injuries, suspensions, junior and NCAA players, etc. The goalie issue was already mentioned, but it is not much of an issue. I’d expect Grant McNeill to be listed as in residence and possibly the same for one of Yeo or Dubuc, given they are currently up from SC on recall.
Hershey’s Roster Information before any possible last day transactions:
3G incl. 1 Hershey contract: Holtby, Neuvirth, and Bacashihua (Hershey contract) – 2 of 3 will be listed on CDR; other will either be on in residence list or temp. assigned to SC.
9D incl. 4 Hershey contracts: Alzner, Amadio (Hershey contract), Carlson (on recall), Collins (injured?), Helmer (Hershey contract), P. McNeill (injured), Miskovic, Wellar (Hershey contract), Yeo (Hershey contract) – I’m guessing 8 listed on CDR with 1 listed on in residence roster, likely Yeo, or considered assigned to SC and recalled due to injuries and call-ups; 7 listed if they choose to list 13F.
13F incl. 3 Hershey contracts: Aucoin, Beagle, Bouchard, Bourque, Dubuc (Hershey contract), Giroux, AGordon, Joudrey (Hershey contract), Kane, G. McNeill (Hershey contract), Perreault, Pinizzotto, Wilson – 12 or 13 listed on CDR, I assume 12 with G. McNeill on in residence roster.
4 SC Washington Capitals contract players: Bruess, Hauswirth, Finley (injured), Godfrey (injured). At this time, all of the known Hershey contract players are with Hershey, none in SC.
OT: I don’t recall Grant McNeill playing d for Hershey at all this season, he dresses as a 4th line winger, although he has played D in the past, incl. at the ECHL level for SC.

Thanks for this excellent rundown. Bears blue line looking a little thin, certainly.

1-2-3, minus-1, 23 PIM in 26 GP. Not too bad, I guess. Too bad Chelios got called up, maybe the Wolves could have loaned him to Hershey instead.

He played 2 playoff games in 2008 when Chicago won the Calder Cup, is a righty, and appears to be from the Pittsburgh area…
best case scenario in terms of bringing in depth on D and not removing anyone.
Yingst does it again
