Maybe if we really needed to win we would continue to ride Theo until he falters but I think it’s more important getting Varly back and playing better prior to the start of the playoffs.

All of the above? The fact that the Caps play a fired-up Hurricanes on Wednesday, a fired-up Lightning on Friday, and a fired-up Hawks team at essentially ten in the morning on Sunday prolly has more to do with it. I see Jose getting most if not all of those starts.

As opposed to Chicago or Carolina? Yeah, I don’t think they’ll play Theo for all three games.

by caps123 on Mar 8, 2010 5:46 PM EST up reply actions

Thats tricky, cause if you want him to get a good outcome, you play him against CAR. If you want to put him to the test, play him against Tampa. Tampa has enough skill where it will be tough for him but they play so poorly that the Caps can probably still pull out a win, sayin they play well but Varly doesn’t. Hopefully they play him against Tampa and he gets his mojo back.

by hockeyman33 on Mar 8, 2010 6:53 PM EST up reply actions

I think they’ll split games until there’s about 8-10 left. Maybe even longer.

by cuqui on Mar 8, 2010 5:45 PM EST up reply actions

Winning games is not our #1 priority right now.

Getting ready for the playoffs is.

by Bushwood Bushwhacker on Mar 8, 2010 5:27 PM EST up reply actions

I was kind of surprised actually. I know they need to get Varly starts, but rarely do you sit a goalie after a shutout. But it’s probably a good idea to try and rest up Theo and get Varly back on his game.

by caps123 on Mar 8, 2010 5:34 PM EST up reply actions

Because the matter of our #1 goalie is still very much up for debate, despite all the knee-jerk reactions on Saturday.

by sixsevenfiftysix on Mar 8, 2010 6:21 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t think it was all that knee-jerk. Theo has overall been better.

Agreed. Still good to get Varly some starts.

by caps123 on Mar 8, 2010 6:30 PM EST up reply actions

He has been better of late; however, i somewhat agree with 6756.
What element of Theo do we all dread? His inconsitency.

I think before we call him the #1 goalie, he needs to show that he can put up a long string of decent to amazing performances. I would still consider him the #1 if he turned in a few bad games once-in-awhile; but, he can’t fall apart amid a “turn around” like has a few times this season.

Bah-Ram-Ewe, Ovechkin will wreck you. Fear the Furious Fleece!

by kingzman264 on Mar 8, 2010 6:30 PM EST up reply actions

I think that’s the point though. Theo has been playing great for a while now. His last really awful game that I can recall was his meltdown against the Canes in late December. Ever since coming in for Neuvy against Florida and kicking off our win streak, he’s been great. I do agree though, that he needs to keep it up to show that he really has turned it around and it’s not just another streak.

by caps123 on Mar 8, 2010 6:39 PM EST up reply actions

Yep yep, as long as he doesn’t have that kind of meltdown, I am ok with him having a few bad showings once and awhile.

Bah-Ram-Ewe, Ovechkin will wreck you. Fear the Furious Fleece!

by kingzman264 on Mar 8, 2010 6:52 PM EST up reply actions

But before Varly went down, he was clearly (well, “clearly” in my opinion, though in anyone’s opinion it should at least be worth discussing) better than Theo has been on average.

by sixsevenfiftysix on Mar 8, 2010 6:51 PM EST up reply actions

I’d agree if by Theo’s average, you take the whole season into scope.

Of late, I’d say Theo’s average is better.

As far as Varly goes, I just hope he returns to form, and can back up Theo through the Play-offs

Two thoughts

We’re giving John Erskine a sweater? I understand benching ShaMo after the awful turnover on Saturday, but still, why not give Tyler Sloan a jersey and take advantage of his tremendous success against goalies named Marty?

We acquire Scott Walker at the deadline in order to bump up team toughness, and yet we don’t play him against a team that has Steve “Suspension-on-Skates” Ott in the lineup. Huh.
