The rest of the release:

Aucoin, 31, currently leads the American Hockey League (AHL) in scoring with 84 points, posting 31 goals (a career high) and 53 assists for the Hershey Bears. Aucoin helped lead the Bears to the Calder Cup last season while finishing second in the AHL scoring race to linemate Alexandre Giroux with 96 points (25 goals, 71 assists).

Aucoin, a 5’9", 162-pound native of Waltham, Mass., has played 21 games for the Capitals in the last two seasons, recording three goals and eight assists. He had a goal and four assists in nine games for Washington earlier this season. The Capitals first signed Aucoin as a free agent July 3, 2008.

Very interesting. With so much uncertainty about the 2C/3C positions next season with BMo and Belanger as UFA’s, i guess the caps will have Aucoin as a fallback option.

Does this put us at 48 contracts?

You had me at no problem.

by Ninjak on Mar 8, 2010 3:26 PM EST reply actions

No, this doesn’t count until next year, and they’re at a low number there (28) at the moment.

50 is the maximum number of contracts an organization can have at any time, yes.

I assume its a 2 way deal. He can do a great job teaching the young centers the Caps have that will be most likely be coming through Hershey in the next couple of years like Macken, Angus, Broda. In a pinch he can be called up and won’t look out of place on an NHL sheet of ice.

I’m surprised a player like Aucoin would play one a two-way contract (where he must make less than ~$100k or be subjected to re-entry waivers) when guys like him have done well financially in Europe. Perhaps he doesn’t want to move his family over there or hasn’t totally given up on the NHL dream, but it’s interesting to me he’s chosen the AHL rather thank likely making more $$ overseasa.

by Hooks Orpik on Mar 8, 2010 3:34 PM EST up reply actions

Caps have paid Giroux a big salary (half a mil) and it wouldn’t surprise me if Aucoin makes quite a lot more than 100k next year.

Aucoin’s last contract was two-way the first year, and one-way (at league minimum) this year.

You assume correctly – it’s a two-way deal.

He must really love it in hershey… second best thing to being in the NHL i guess.

by CAPFan4Life on Mar 8, 2010 3:47 PM EST up reply actions

honestly, if my option is continue to be a team leader in Hershey and see the occasional call-up duty in DC, or move overseas for the money, I’d give some serious consideration to a two-way deal with DC/Hershey.

by JSchon on Mar 8, 2010 4:29 PM EST up reply actions

I would love to be a player in the org. of marginal NHL skill or value because it seems everyone who fits that bill gets a two year deal.

by ThreePingPost on Mar 8, 2010 3:30 PM EST reply actions

Interesting that Aucoin chose to re-up rather than seeing if there’s a NHL team willing to give him a shot. Unless the fact that he cleared waivers at the beginning of the season was enough of a signal.

by apk3000 on Mar 8, 2010 3:37 PM EST reply actions

It’s hard to believe that no NHL team wants to give him a full time chance? I mean scoring 84 pts, even if it’s the ahl, has to give you some kind of shot in the big clubs.

by CAPFan4Life on Mar 8, 2010 3:37 PM EST reply actions

He’s a 31 year old who’s played 74 games in the NHL over 5 seasons, one season of which he got in 38 games (with the Canes in 2007-08). That’s about as close to a chance as he would probably get.

by Hello Dahlen on Mar 8, 2010 3:55 PM EST up reply actions

And I don’t mean that as a knock on him; there’s worse things to be than a career AHLer. Unless his contract gets in the way of the Caps signing some awesome new free agent, he has value in the organization if only from the leadership and guidance to young players in Hershey.

TWO-WAY CONTRACT EXEMPTIONS REGARDING RE-ENTRY WAIVERS

Players on two-way contracts may be exempt from re-entry waivers (recalled from AHL to NHL) depending upon their AHL salary, and the number of professional-level games played previously.

Any player signed to a two-way standard player contract (SPC), whose waiver exemption provided under terms of their first SPC no longer applies, is exempt from re-entry waivers if the following conditions have been met:

•The player’s AHL salary is less than $105,000
•The player appeared in less than 40 NHL games the previous season, including playoffs
•The player appeared in less than 80 NHL games the previous two seasons, including playoffs
•If the player is a goaltender, he has played in less than 180 professional (NHL/AHL/ECHL) games in his career, including playoffs
•If the player is a forward or defenseman, he has played in less than 320 professional (NHL/AHL/ECHL) games, including playoffs

Most likely Aucoin will get a max AHL Salary and The Min NHL Salary of $525,000 for both years. Thats not that bad get paid between 100k-500k per year playing the game you love; I know i’d take that in a heart beat.
