Ok, so I have a new ice slot.  I've already paid so everything is taken care of.  We just need people to show up and pay.  Same story as the last time.  If you forget, just check the last FanPost.  Who's in?  Who's out?  Please don't make me hunt people down.  Goalies, hash it out in the comments.  I don't really care just make sure there's at least two.

Saturday March 27 at 9:15 PM.  KCI.

If this FanPost is written by someone other than one of the blog's editors, the opinions expressed in it do not necessarily reflect those of this blog or SB Nation.

The jury seems out on whether or not it’s a bad idea to play the same day.

It’s probably not a good idea to drink, though. Can somebody with some kind of medical background please clarify on both topics?

Can I drink alcohol after giving blood?
Alcohol has two effects that may be problematic for donors. The first is that alcohol tends to dilate your blood vessels, and this can put you at increased risk for dizziness or fainting after your donation. Second, alcohol tends to dehydrate you, and after you donate, you need MORE fluid, not less! So, it is really a good idea to avoid alcoholic beverages for at least the first several hours after donation, preferably for at least 12 hours.

So wait an hour, during that hour drink a few pints of water, afterward don’t really have more than a beer an hour since you’ll be playing hockey, and I think everything will be cool.

I look to the future because that's where I'm going to spend the rest of my life.

beer has water in it.. we’re find jordan.. hahaha

jk.. no i plan to donate.. then find somewhere to just chill out for a few hours and get some food/water/etc until we meet up.. by the time we’re done playing it’ll be 12 hours!

I think it’s pretty easy to estimate saves — highslot and I were just joking around. There were plenty of shots last time and plenty of saves in result of that. The goalies will probably take it more serious instead of goofing around since it means something too.

Hey, what’s the level like? I’m an aging (44) ex youth hockey player who never made it past Bantam. A few years of men’s league are also behind me, and the last pickup I went to everyone was much younger and faster than me. I had a good time, but it’s not as much fun being the slowest guy out there.

its a lot of mixed skill levels. Its more fun hanging with everyone and such before/after over a pint. Hockey is for Everyone.. or so im told a million times a day on NHLN.

If money/attendance is going to be an issue, i would suggest moving to another facility where cost is less and maybe more people could attend. Not for this skate but in the future. If I wasn’t planning on Donating earlier in the day I think I would be playing my men’s league game at 4:40 in Laurel. But you all are fun and I don’t have to worry about some idiot trying to hack my shit up.

Well when we initially started this people knew that KCI was more expensive and still wanted to play there. If the cost is prohibitive for someone, then speak up. I think it’s just that we don’t have as many people who are pumped about the game, or people are out of town or injured or something.

Sounds like we were in similar situations. When you got back into it, did you take lessons or something? I know where I can take skating lessons, but I have no idea where to find a beginners adult league. Everything I’ve seen that is introductory is for kids.

I’m pretty sure Fairfax does an adult novice training class/league, but I think that’s pretty far away from where you live..

I just went to stick n’ shoot-type open sessions two or three times a week when I first decided to start playing again to re-learn stuff on my own. I got good enough to not embarrass myself in pickup games too bad after a few months (though conditioning was [and is] still an issue).

On the wrist, yes. No structural damage, but still some pain that should eventually go away. On the back, it seems like it’s getting better with stretching and ROM exercises, so we’ll see.

So basically, I’m cleared to play but will probably be very, very sore the next day.

Ok folks, what do we wan to do about meeting up? Are people interested in drinking before hand? I assume Laichitor and the other spectators will be interested in that (only way to make it an entertaining game for them). There isn’t a Caps game, but hockey will start around 7 and we should be able to get at least one TV devoted to a hockey game. I’m thinking 7 could be a good time to meet up. Game starts at 9:15 but we should start getting dressed around 8:30 because they’ll probably let us on the ice early like last time. 7 gives us 90 minutes to drink and socialize before the game. If people want to meet earlier or later, let it be known here. Let’s have some fun before the game, and then show Pensburgh and BSH who the boss is during the game. I assume people are going to stick around to drink after the game as well, no?

I, on the other hand, only have to coach Saturday morning, so I’m good for it.

Just a little bulletin board reading

here’s a special knowledge drop

Caps fans are becoming Flyers fans, minus the criminal assault charges in the Men’s room and any actual semblance of hockey knowledge.

this was a keeper, too.

What a piss poor fanbase in Washington. I could fill the Cup with tears from Caps fans crying about calls. It was like they’ve all been reading A2Y for the past year, claiming Bettman paid Devorski to give the Pens calls. They just can’t get over last year.

but despite the dark and stormy clouds…

Utterly terrible fan base, save for most of the Japers’ crew, who incidentally, I’ll be playing in pick-up at Kettler on Saturday night. Decent guys that I feel pretty badly for, seeing the quality of their fanbase go straight down the Philly-style shitter.

If it’s that big of a deal that I vented on Pensblog about the bullsh*t I heard last night that reminded me of the yinzer jokers I hear in the Igloo and the Philly clowns, then fine. Put your fingers in your ears and believe that the wave of converted Skins fans can’t rival Pittsburgh and Philly fans on the douche-meter.

I called it like I saw and heard it, and what I heard was a disgrace to the Caps fans I used to know in Landover and in the MCI before Rocking the Red became all the rage. Same thing goes for new Pens fans that don’t know who Rico Fata and Konstantin Koltsov were and routinely job away at opposing fans/teams. The hatred for a team, without an appreciation for the game, was abhorrent. I wondered if anyone was as embarrassed as I am in Pittsburgh sometimes.

I stand by my comments. I was shocked last night at what I heard. You should’ve quoted the actual quotes I heard from people, which I also posted but you apparently decided not to copy here:

A woman 3 rows behind me, while it was 2-1, says the following:

“Well, this game doesn’t mean anything to us, so they should start taking the suspensions now and injuring guys like Staal so that the Pens can’t beat us in the Playoffs.”

Before pointing fingers, friend, be consistent. After the bullshit I heard last night like this (and that’s just scraping the surface), I think I have every right to have such an opinion.

As I noted later on (and you conveniently chose not to quote),

By the way, apparently the Caps fanbase has its own version of yinzers—I’ll call them Skinzers (since most of them own Portis or Doug Williams jerseys).

To the uninitiated, “yinzers” are what we call the Steelers fans who only recently started following hockey and are an embarrassment to Pens fans. So no, I’m not calling the entire fan base of the Caps a joke. I’m calling “Skinzers”—especially those in Sec. 400 last night—an identical joke to the people I hear yelling “SHOOOOOOT” in the F Balcony in the Igloo.

Thanks for selectively trying to make me out to be a bad guy, right after grabbing an extra $20 from the ATM for Saves for Kids. I’d still like to play Saturday, since everyone I met last time were good natured guys who didn’t talk out of their asses. But if anyone’s panties are too bunched up about my take—which I didn’t troll on about here—then I’ll pass.

I’m sure I could dig up some choice comments about Pens’ fans from everyone here if I went back through Japers’, but it’s not worth the time. It’s expected that you’d get that off your chest here. Well, I vented to Pens fans. On Pensblog. Sorry I hurt anyone’s feelings.

I’ll say this, Skinzers is hysterical. And if I heard anyone arguing that anyone should try to hurt an opposing player I’d be pissed. Totally classless.

You’re obviously welcome to still play, but I am going to shut you down.

Killer_Carlson and Steckel Me Elmo are like brothers to me. And when I say brothers I don't mean like actual brothers. I mean it like how black people use it, which is more meaningful, I think.

The Selke’s on the table. But Coach Mage has a gameplan, I’m sure.

Mine? After I borrow Crittendon’s piece to whack the Flyers fans that show up, I’m going to park it in front of the net, Ciccarelli-style. I may not skate that well, but my fat ass can still block a goalie’s vision.

Coach Mage? At best he’s a slight step up from Coach Bykov. You’re toast.

And feel free to bust on the Flyers fans, but they’ll be on your team.

Coach Mage has been studying game film of the last Rink Rat pickup. He’s noticed a flaw in your backchecking technique—apparently you can be distracted by shiny objects and large, exposed breasts. I’m considering hiring a stripper for the evening and having her press her assets against the glass. Problem is, I’d probably lose the puck myself, so it would cancel out.

The last time I tried putting on a pair of skates, I hugged the rink all the way around. dinasaur can vouch for that, I’m pretty sure, but I can’t remember how old she was. Too bad, too, because many years ago, I managed to skate just fine. Nothing special, but confidently. I’m not as heavy as I was the last time I tried, so maybe I’ll give it another go at some point, but I kind of doubt it.

Possibly, but not sure. I own a pair of ancient skates (they were hand-me-downs many years ago), which I might have still been using, but it might have been a spur of the moment decision to skate, requiring rentals. But trust me, it was all fear, not the skates.

Love the analogy though.

We need about 5 more people, though, to make it re-doable. $30 is too expensive for that, as awesome as it is.

OR do it at another rink that isnt 500 bucks for the slot. I love kettler too but the cost is rough.

Glad everyone had fun last night.. and for the record.. I AINT NO SISSY!!

You can go back to look at the other rink ice slot costs I posted in the first FanPost but with the tax and the extra expense any of the half-way decent rinks aren’t much cheaper. We could go to a crap hole rink and save some money but if we are trying to do some drinking and hanging out before/after it really makes no sense to go anywhere but Kettler. We should easily be able to keep the cost at $25 and if we pick the right date when people are available, and other people don’t drop out last minute, we can get it down to almost $20. If people want to switch rinks then we should have that discussion before the next one, if we do another. I do know it would have been much suckier for Beta, Ovechwin, Kellowbellow, Laichitor, and the other ladies that came to watch and drink.

I absolutely love the location of Kettler but the cost is my issue. But I’ll fork over 20-25 bucks for pickup w/ you clowns any time.. (that I can make it)

After working all day yesterday and playing two games.. I’d have rather been there w/ you guys. Next time..

Well if people show it’s only 20-25. It depends on scheduling but we had 3 people drop out late or we would have hit 20 people even. Then we have UF who is in Argentina and if he’s in America he’s definitely in, plus a friend. Sct112 was out, but last time he was in, +1. Docciavelli has a friend that had to bail last minute as well. I see no reason we can’t get up to 25 people, which takes it down to $20 a person and that’s fine for me. You could pay $15 for a normal pick up at Kettler and then you’d be on a bench with 4 lines. $20 per person for just over 2 lines per team is pretty fair, I’d say. I also live 5 minutes from KCI so I love the location.

We left the garage headed home and then said “fuck it, let’s go hang out” and went back in the mall. We went to Bailey’s and it was fuckwhoa packed, and they were charging cover, so we left. Didn’t have anybody’s number to text and figure out what was going on (email me a number for the future, somebody), so we were kinda screwed. We left again, which was probably for the best anyway considering Becky’s not feeling well-ness.

Tons of fun at the game, though! When’s the next one?

Actually, I’m all for recommendations. Speaking of, if anyone goes to Italy, make sure you hit Sorrento on the Amalfi Coast. Best food I’ve ever had in my life I had there. I believe that’s the town where you can ferry to Capri, which had the best pizza I’ve ever had in my life, if you’re into thin crust , good sauce, and oozing with olive oil.

I actually found the exchange funnier without fire.

That sucks, well I guess I just need to get my name into the league to see if anyone is short of players. Unless anyone here has a team in need of players. (I can remind you of who I was on the ice if you don’t remember/didn’t meet me)

Ha. Don’t take it like that. You’ve got plenty of wheels for the B league. We just had a big roster for the fall team and they wanted to cut it down for the spring/summer league so we wouldn’t have 4 lines.

No, I’m just messin with ya. I’m not surprised you guys want to cut down… 4 lines is too many if guys are actually showing up regularly. 14 players where you hopefully get 13 playing each night is the perfect number for me.

Killer_Carlson and Steckel Me Elmo are like brothers to me. And when I say brothers I don't mean like actual brothers. I mean it like how black people use it, which is more meaningful, I think.

Nice. I was looking at the camera way off to our right. You know the one that was being held by the invisible person.

Great. Now I have to change my name to "Jaromir meet Alex".

Admit it, you were entranced by my striking profile.

Actually I was busing winking at Mrs. F&B, I hear she’s available…

Then you’re looking the wrong way. She’s up in the bleachers behind your head.

Wow, I had no idea that strap was hanging down from my mask the entire time.

Any idea how many shots there were? Felt like about three thousand.

I guesstimated 70ish but I forgot to count some times.

I don’t think it was like that the whole time. I think it might have gotten knocked loose at some point.

Anyway to put names to faces here?

Probably would help for next time. Everyone knows that I’m in the yellow, F&B is maroon Colgate (Cornell? Whoops…), and Jordan is in the black/purple Kings. Rothenberg was the White Goalie, and Winterion had the Green GMU jersey, IIRC.

You could number everyone and have them say what number they are.

DP is in the black Caps jersey, dinasaur is the lady in the white Caps jersey, D’ohboy is in the dingy white W jersey, Zephyr is the purple goalie, highslot is.. oh wait

I’m the tall goofy guy in the back center, with the blue.

Dipping my toe in the Japers’ water for the first time. I know, I know. Avatar. I’ll get on it.

Thanks for having me along guys and gals!

I’m in front of you to the right in white, the left of docciavelli.

BigMac is the guy next to you, behind dinasaur. Soulie is on his knee in white in front between me and Winterion. ChrisMeetAlex is in the red behind him longingly gazing at me.

Great work with the camera beta! Thank you!

Mm-hmm. And there's a penalty for that?

Thanks for having the old slow guy out there. I had a blast, and you all are a good measuring stick for my learning to play. I still suck, but I sucked less than January.

You were about 1000 times better than the first game.

I look to the future because that's where I'm going to spend the rest of my life.

I think a bunch of people got much better, I think Winterion actually scored on a breakaway this time :)

Evgeny Kuznetsov hams it up as he joins the Russia men's national team for the "Sweden Games" leg of the Euro Hockey Tour in Helsinki, Finland.

There's a bit of controversy as their game against the Finns is scheduled to be played in Helsinki's outdoor Olympic Stadium. Where the daytime temps are currently approximately minus-15 degrees Celsius, with periodic heavy snow.

This interview with head coach Zinetula Bilyaletdinov is fascinating, as he frets about the weather and especially when the reporters press him on the leaked reports that Kuznetsov will be centering the top line for Team Russia, just weeks after his 20th birthday.
