NHL Standings using Olympics points system

So there's been some talk, particularly with all these overtime & shootout games lately, that the NHL should go to the Olympic-style points system for the standings. gfcaps fan was wondering how it might affect the NHL standings, and I figured it would be an easy thing to run the numbers on. If the NHL switched to the Olympic-style points system a team would get 3 points for a regulation win, 2 points for an overtime or shootout win, 1 points for an overtime or shootout loss, and 0 points for a regulation loss.

Some folks think this might drastically change the standings, dropping a team multiple places due to that team winning a large chunk of it's games in the "gimmick". I admit I'm one of those, especially when it comes to the Penguins, but I was a bit surprised by how little it affected things.

The change in points didn't greatly affect the standings, although a few teams moved up or down a slot. The big losers were the Coyotes, who have 17 OT/SO wins on the season. But they didn't move and spots in the standings because they're 2nd in their division and b/c of that they end up being 4th in the West. The big change for the Coyotes comes from the fact that instead of being 2 games back of the Sharks, with the new points system, they're 5 games back.

One change in the East is that the Penguins would drop behind the Devils in their division, due to all those OT/SO wins of the Penguins.

The stats in the last 5 columns are the new stats under an Olympics-style points system. The interesting thing is how it would affect playoff pairings.

Current Pairings:
Washington - Boston
Pitt - Montreal
Buffalo - Philly
NJ Devils - Ottawa

San Jose - Colorado
Chicago - LA
Vancouver - Detroit
Phoenix - Nashville

New Pairings:
Washington - NY Rangers
NJ Devils - Atlanta
Buffalo - Philly
Pitt - Ottawa

San Jose - LA
Vancouver - Colorado
Chicago - Detroit
Phoenix - Nashville

The West has a few teams trading spots, and in the East some teams jump in and others drop out.
