Tuesday Caps Clips: Senators @ Caps Game Day

Your savory breakfast links:

  • Previews of tonight's game against the Sens from Vogs, Peerless and NHL.com, and be sure to check out our SB Nation partner Silver Seven for coverage from the other side of tonight's match up.
  • To refresh your memory, this is the fourth and final meeting of the season between these two teams, with the Caps trying to even the season series at two wins apiece after dropping a pair of one-goal decisions (4-3 and 6-5) and winning the middle game by a 5-2 count.
  • Notes from yesterday's practice, including a timeline on a few injured players, line juggling, and more. [CI, WaPo, DCEx, DCEx, Flickr (pics), Caps In Pictures (pics)]
  • Brooks Laich roundup. [Corey Masisak (the must-read), CI, WaPo, Examiner]
  • Yesterday's "Awwww..." moment, courtesy Eric Belanger's brood. [WJLA]
  • Fresh power rankings are out, with the Caps holding on to the top spot at ESPNSporting News and CBC, up one to first at The Hockey News and down one to second at CBSSports.
  • Is Mike Green a legitimate Norris Trophy candidate? Of course he is. (The Great Duncan Keith, by the way, is minus-7 in March... and blaming his footwear.) [Puck Daddy, Sportsnet]
  • Down the stretch they come for the Ross and Richard. [Peerless, RMNB, Canwest]
  • Alex Ovechkin is having another great season (not exactly breaking news, but still always good to read about). [Corey Masisak]
  • Scouting the likely eighth seeds in the Eastern Conference. [FFODC, DC Landing Strip, RtR]
  • Bruce Boudreau's Caps have accomplished two of the four goals they set for themselves back in the pre-season. A third may be just a week or so away. The fourth? We'll have to wait a couple of months to see how that one turns out... we hope. [Capitals]
  • Ovi talking workout routines, with a sidebar of eye candy. [Men's Fitness]
  • AO on a Caps/Pens Winter Classic... [CI]
  • ... which we're warned not to ruin (um, ok). [Puck The Media]
  • Talking Hart (and Vezina, but who cares about that one?). [THN]
  • A helpful reminder that the Caps have been excellent against really good (and really poor) competition. [FanPost]
  • A flowchart on booing the home team. [FFODC]
  • Braden Holtby: quirky. [RMNB]
  • Your weekly Farm Report. [FanPost]
  • Unfortunately, Chris Clark's season is over. Get well soon, Clarkie. [TSN]
  • Per the HHoF, on this date back in 1975, "Ron Lalonde scored the first hat trick in Washington Capitals' history as the Capitals lost 8-5 to the Red Wings." I'm feelin' one tonight.
  • Finally, happy 39th birthday to Jamie Heward, happy 49th to the late Doug Wickenheiser, and happy 57th to Dennis Ververgaert.

Over from OT Hockey, Francis Bouillon’s nickname is one of the better ones in hockey. I figured most knew of it, but it was funny the first time I heard it….anyway, I’d prefer less OT games against basement teams.

Oh, yeah. I didn’t read the Holtby article. Back when Ellis was winning all those games (07-08) there were some pretty good jokes going around. He’s a bit of an odd duck, anyway.

I particularly liked this bit:

Suter recalled an incident that occurred during the Predators warm-ups before their game against the Blackhawks on March 22, when an errant puck reportedly slipped past Ellis and cracked the housing of the goaltender’s television set. According to Suter, Ellis played with such tenacity over the next eight days that he stopped 147 consecutive shots and would not allow players from either team within 12 feet of the goal.

So, yeah. Who thinks he ends up on the Flyers next year?

GUTEN TAAAAAAAAAAAAG!

Oh please no. I love Dan. That would ruin his career. I’m hoping for Washington or another well-run organization. There’s little doubt he returns to Nashville, which makes me sad. He’s been my favorite Predator off the ice for a while now.

by jordanDC on Mar 30, 2010 10:08 AM EDT up reply actions

It would make a certain amount of sense. Varlamov hasn’t exactly shown the greatest durability, and Ellis has shown that he’s perfectly capable of working in a platoon system with another goaltender. I can see us offering something like $3.5M-4M over 2 years. At the same time, I have to imagine some other team will offer him more years or more money.

He would, however, fit in very nicely with the Caps’ social media network.

GUTEN TAAAAAAAAAAAAG!

by jordanDC on Mar 30, 2010 10:25 AM EDT up reply actions

They’ll need to sign a guy for next year who has starter ability and mentality (like Eliis) because I don’t think anyone is handing Varlamov the job.

by RCheli on Mar 30, 2010 10:19 AM EDT up reply actions

I don’t disagree. But while I don’t think anyone’s ready to make Varlamov the unquestioned starter, I do think he will get a fair number (30 or more, barring injury) starts next year. You’re not going to sign a goalie to a multi-year contract when you’ve got three pretty good goaltending prospects in the system, and you’re not going to sign a goalie to a big money contract when you’re only planning on giving him 50 starts or so.

So we offer Ellis $3.5M over two years, or something like that, and he turns us down because Philly/Edmonton/Ottawa offers him more money and more years and an opportunity to be a starter.

GUTEN TAAAAAAAAAAAAG!

by Wheeler on Mar 30, 2010 10:32 AM EDT up reply actions

Washington seems to be a perfect situation. Ellis wants to start, but isn’t a no. 1 type. He’s more a 1B, which is what the Caps seem to want. I bet he takes a little less to stay on the East coast and go to a Cup contender.

3G, 12A, + 4

It’s clear that once the media establishes it’s meme, it’s not changing. Instead of saying Green is all offsense and no defense, now it’s that he plays on a team with so much offsense that his +/- is inflated. Poor guy can’t win.

Green is a liability in his own zone – this is by far the most ignorant comment people make and they should be slapped in the face for it. Duncan Keith sure looked like a liability when Nicky B was undressing him a few weeks ago.

Green didn’t even make Team Canada, how can he win the Norris – as if one has something to do with the other. If he’s not good enough for Steve Yzerman, he can’t win the Norris. Seriously.

I don’t know. I used “solid” because it’s a weasel word. I don’t feel comfortable putting games played or numbers on it. Let’s just say that when you hear these guys’ names you’ll recognize them as NHL players instead of could have beens. I’m not sure what a could objective standard would be.

by jordanDC on Mar 30, 2010 2:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Let’s ignore the goalies because they are impossible to guess (but even including them these guys are all pretty highly touted). Canada’s D is going to pretty much all go to the NHL. I think Cowen was drafted waaaaaaaaaay too high but he’ll still become an NHL player in all likelihood. Their forwards are mostly studs as well. Adams, Bourque, Henrique, Kozun and McMillan are the only guys I could see not making the NHL. The way McMillan works and his versatility means he probably makes it, ditto Kozun. Bourque can fly and do a little bit of everything in an organization that needs forwards, so he probably makes it. Adam belongs to Buffalo and they do an excellent job of developing forwards (not so much keeping them). So basically, if Team Canada has more than 3 guys not become regular NHL players It’ll be a big surprise.

Team USA didn’t have the same high end talent, but those guys all have what it takes to make the NHL. They can skate, play physically, and are exceptionally smart. Warsofsky is the only USA D that blows right off the bat. If he makes the NHL I’ll be mildly surprised (though BU has a great track record for development). Carlson, Fowler, Donovan, and Gardiner are near locks. Ramage and Lashoff should both make it but I could see one or both stumbling. Up front Tyler Johnson seems to have no future, but I bet that he gets drafted this year and his skating and PK work will get him a look by someone. If he’s available in the 3rd round I think GMGM should grab him. Jenks wasn’t great, but he was a beast in the face off circle and has tons of speed. I’m sure someone could make use of that skill set (FLA currently owns him). Walker didn’t impress, so I don’t see much in his future. Zucker is interesting, he was 16 when the tournament started (IIRC) and is draft eligible this year. He’s already got a ton of USNTDP experience. He wasn’t given a ton of ice because of his age but he can skate and has some great skill. He’ll be interesting to watch. I’d say USA could see 2 D fail, and 3 Fs. Between the two teams that means I’m guessing that at least 32 of the 40 skaters on the two teams will be NHL players, per F&B’s predictions. That’s conservative, I think it’s more likely that at least 35 guys make it.

Killer_Carlson and Steckel Me Elmo are like brothers to me. And when I say brothers I don't mean like actual brothers. I mean it like how black people use it, which is more meaningful, I think.

I did watch that one, and it’s up there.

But the US win in ‘96 was not only a phenomenal game, but also a good personal story. I was at school at ’Cuse and we didn’t get the game on cable. And as this was early in the Internet days (and no one was covering WC hockey on TV), we had a buddy’s dad tape it and send it to us. We avoided the score for three days, popped in the VHS tape, got hammered and watched it.

To this day, scoring a goal on a goalie after they’ve re-inserted him post empty-netter is one of my favorite moments in hockey. I still call it “a Deadmarsh.”

Hahaha. I think the ‘96 win was also the biggest legitimizing win in USA hockey history. I’m not knocking that selection at all. 1980 and 1960 were teams that weren’t supposed to compete but did; but those wins didn’t make people say “holy shit, USA is for real.” 1996 did that (then we disappeared again). The WJC was a great game but people knew we had a team that could play. And now after the Olympics, we won’t sneak up on anyone anymore.

once working out becomes a norm in your life, you really DO feel the difference when you skip a workout.

I have the opposite trend going: never work out, do something physically strenuous (like shoveling a shit load of snow), then pay for it for the next several days. Works for me, I’m not fat.

what muscles, aside from legs do most trainers/teams tell you to really work out?

I’d think the back muscles would be a huge part of the workout but Ovi didn’t even mention it.

Core strength is huge and lower body as well. Of course when you’re playing full contact upper body does help but I’d say it goes in that order. Core/Lower followed by upper in a close 2nd.

by ididntdoit on Mar 30, 2010 1:44 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t even think upper body is that close a 2nd. You look at the arms some of these guys have and you wonder how they are NHL players (lookin’ at you, Sasha). I don’t think any of the skill guys are hulking up top. AO is a known beast and he’s not even huge up top, but his legs are gigantic. Legs/core are much more important.

I mean skill guys in general. They are all strong, don’t get me wrong. But NHL players need speed more than hulking strength. Bulking up and adding weight ends up being counter-productive. As I said above, look at an NFL linebacker and compare him to AO or Weber. They are about the same height but carry so much more mass.

Well, obviously there’s exceptions to every rule. And obviously Weber is not NFL-built. But he is massive.

Your point is taken, though. Even Jason Arnott, who’s frigging massive, is not really chiseled. He looks like a pretty average gym-goer, except a 6’5 1/2 one.

He passed away from cancer about a decade ago. I think the Blues still have a tribute banner for a cancer fund up in their arena. Such a strange career he had… he was a first overall draft choice taken by Montreal when they were expecting to take Denis Savard. He never turned into the superstar the Habs touted him to be, but by the time he got to DC he was an established 3rd-line forward who worked hard and checked pretty well. Some would say his career was a disappointment, but if he were drafted in the second round or later, no one would have said that…
