Capitals Acquire Joe Corvo from Hurricanes
Again per @TSNBobMcKenzie, the Capitals have acquired Joe Corvo from the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for Brian Pothier, Oskar Osala, and a second round pick.
Corvo's had some on-ice success and is a solid puck-mover and powerplay quarterback. That said, he might be a tough guy to root for:
Corvo racked up 21 goals and 76 points in 106 games for the Boudreau's Monarchs. Know what else he did? He got arrested and charged with felony assault with a weapon. The weapon? His foot. The circumstances? He grabbed a woman's posterior in a restaurant and, at some point after she had fallen to the floor, punched and kicked her. In the face. The punishment? Thirty hours of autograph signing and a three-game suspension (for much more on the incident - as if you need it - click here).
Per the team:
Corvo (KORE-voh), 32, is in his eighth NHL season and his third with Carolina. The 6’0", 204-pound native of Oak Park, Ill., has four goals, eight assists and only 12 penalty minutes in 34 games for the Hurricanes this year. Corvo was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in the fourth round with the 83rd overall pick in the 1997 NHL Draft. He has played in 468 career NHL games with Los Angeles, Ottawa and Carolina and has recorded 66 goals and 146 assists.Corvo previously played for Washington coach Bruce Boudreau when both were with the AHL’s Lowell Lock Monsters (2000-01) and the Manchester Monarchs (2001-03). He had 31 goals and 78 assists in 183 games under Boudreau.
Pothier (POH-thee-uhr), 32, is a 10-year pro who has spent the last four seasons with the Capitals. The New Bedford., Mass., native had four goals and seven assists in 41 games with the Capitals this season.
Osala (OH-sah-lah), 22, was Washington’s fourth-round selection, 97th overall, in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft. He has spent most of the past two seasons with the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League, appearing in two games for the Capitals last season. He has 15 goals and 14 assists in 53 games for the Bears this season.

I will miss Pothier. Not a fan of this trade.

definitely one of the good guys. what a bummer. They seem like pretty similar players too, though with Corvo a little better offensively and Pothier a little better defensively.
I don’t know. Corvo plays more minutes (not a ton) against tougher competition with worse teammates. He may be defensively underrated. We’ll see.

exactly what i was thinking. i’m not sure what to think about any of our trades. i’m a little confused as to what they really bring to the team (besides belanger…..he sounds like he could help some).
I agree. The Belanger trade seems like the only clear great move today. I guess we’ll see though…

And you know what else? If we have a checker get hurt, the Walker deal (and not moving a roster F) ensure that his replacement will also be an NHL caliber player!

I don’t think so. I think it’s important that you fill in injuries with NHL players. Q isn’t going to cut it so dressing him to play 5 minutes does no good. Injuries will happen so I’m glad we have some insurance.

I think GMGM
just sees John Carlson as a younger, better version of Pothier.
Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words—"mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

Do you have any actual reason at all for believing this?

Brian Pothier is a hockey player. John Carlson is a younger, better hockey player. Further, they both play D. Even further, they both shoot righty!

I am really not seeing this one. I’m not sure Corvo is an upgrade over Pothier given his somewhat high-risk style of play (as if the Caps need another defenseman with that attribute), and he isn’t the sort of defenseman that fills a needs gap.
If you've read this far...seek help.
Not only that, but how is he is worth a roster player, prospect, and a 2nd rd pick? Digesting this, the only thing I can conclude is Philly or someone was close to a deal for Corvo and GMGM blocked it by over paying. That doesn’t make this any more agreable though…
by ThreePingPost on Mar 3, 2010 3:28 PM EST up reply actions
Corvo would have been worth a first on this market. GMGM wasn’t giving up his first in a draft he already gave up his 2. So he got rid of a 2, and a prospect that has been falling (and he surely knows more about OO than any of us). Potsy was just to make roster space. Someone had to go and I’m guessing CAR wanted Potsy.

Corvo trivia:
- missed 28 games after being cut on his lower right leg by the skate of Washington’s Karl Alzner Nov. 30. Prior to the injury, led all Carolina defensemen in scoring with 12 points, and led the team with four power-play goals, while averaging a then team-high 25:33 of ice time per game.
Good hitter, good on PP, minute muncher, good playoff experience. Pretty much GMGM’s criteria.
They traded for guys that BB and the team are familiar with. I love it.
My ability to post is only surpassed by my ability to pinch pennies.
Great point, definitely agree. BB has seen all of these guys up close and knows their practice and game habits. I doubt he’d vouch for a guy that didn’t get along with him so this should be a good thing.

My ability to post is only surpassed by my ability to pinch pennies.
what do you mean a 2nd round pick…we did not give up 3 things for Corvo -that i saw anyway. The team has made the decision to add toughness for the playoff run. I think they had enough of getting pushed around and abused—see Matt Bradley. Teams start too much shit with us and enough is enough. The 2 forwards should give us a little better team D. Jurcina played well in the playoffs last year and, pending this sports hernia that i am hearing about, should help. Not sure about
Corvo. Dont really need him for anything other than to quarterback the 2nd PP unit. He is not going to take ice time away from other players on first unit. One thing i will point out…Green has played hurt , i believe , the past 2 years in the playoffs, and struggled. If you see what GMGM did, he played to add depth this year as we cannot predict injuries. We lost one current roster player, pothier, who sits out every other game anyway, and was leaving. We still have 3.5 months to go before the whole season is over, and these guys can help us. When OTT traded Corvo to Carolina 2 years ago, the guy was fabulous down the stretch for them. I remember him having a hat trick in one game. He can shoot the puck and give offense from the D. All of these guys are able to walk away after this year too, which is important to signing our FA and UFA, so they are not bad moves. Most of these picks we gave are not critical—-see the Hershey Bears. We have people to bring up soon. Alzner, Carlson, Perrault….This was merely for depth to make a long run, and for the short term, its good backup to have without giving up anyone big. Assuming nothing else happened after 3pm…We would all be crying if Flash was gone right now…

I don’t know how you can say that Hamhuis definitely wasn’t available. There wasn’t anything confirming he was off the market until right before the deadline. Coach can handle him, I’m not concerned about it. The team wants to win. That’s what they care about, and that’s all that really matters at this point in the season. No doubt, they ‘ll be happy to have Jurcina back, he was well liked and he learned a lot, all good, from Fedorov. I’m glad he’s back, anyway. I’m overlooking Corvo’s past – he paid for his badness and is paying still, so let’s get on with the hunt for the grail and see if he can keep up with the rest of them. I expect he will.
Not the best D rumored to be out there, but I like the move. Corvo is definitely an upgrade on Pothier as he can handle top 4 minutes and brings some extra offense. He can skate well, move the puck, and is actually pretty decent on the PK, so all of that improves the Caps’ D overall.
I also love his shot totals. Having another Dman who can bomb away from the point AND get his shots on net will be huge to help create goals for Knuble et al.
Of all our iniquities ignorance may be the worst
I think if he is healthy, it is a great move. His # from last year are encouraging. Depends on what the true grade is on Osala

Before the trade, our top 6 D (in no order):
Green, Schultz, Morrisson, Poti, Pothier, Erskine
Now:
Green, Schultz, Morrisson, Corvo, Poti, Jurcina
That’s a win to me, even if it’s only slightly. Getting rid of Erskine/Sloan combo is fine by me.
Except Corvo is better than Mo. Good-sized win, agreed.

I think Corvo is a better skater and shooter than Pothier. Pothier was a little steadier, not as likely to gamble or make a big mistake. My guess is that Corvo will fit better in Boudreau’s system than Pothier did. So, the trade makes sense. I’m still not sure if it’s enough of an upgrade for the price.
Pothier was definitely prone to boneheaded mistakes, and these tended to be more common the more ice time he got. If he was kept under 18 mins, he seemed to do OK.

Lost in all this balance is that GMGM made these moves without noticeably sacrificing organizational assets. Those 2’s will be essentially 3’s, and if Belanger or Corvo re-signs, that makes the deals more appealing.
That said, the Walker one is a little meh.
"First Lady, I'm sorry I pimp slapped you into that china cabinet."

At about the same price. Belanger could easily be the Theodore of secondary centers, placeholding until Mackan/MP are ready to go.
"First Lady, I'm sorry I pimp slapped you into that china cabinet."
Both B Mo and Belanger’s stats would indicate they should not be relied on to improve their performance in the playoffs. David Steckel’s stats (and certainly this regular season) point to an opposing trend.
But then stats are just like pictures in a book Mrs. Torrence, they aren’t real.
That 7th is essentially an 8! If you like moving the twos on that basis then how are you so “meh” on Walker? He’s at least better than Q even if he never dresses and we gave up nothing.

Last year Joe Corvo was 4th among D on CAR in TOI/60 on the PK. He had the best PKplus/minus/60 of all players that played more than 30. The PK gave up over 5.5(!) more goals per 60 when he was off the ice.
This year he leads all D in PKTOI/60 on his team (Suck it Gleason!). He’s missed a lot of time so keep that in mind, but his PKplus/minus/60 is doubled, and ranks 4th among regular blueliners. But the PK is still .7ga/60 worse with him off the ice so he’s not exactly a liability.
CAR is a mess this year and he’s missed a lot of time, so it’s tough to draw conclusion (OTOH some might politely suggest that they caught some luck last year so you could adjust last year’s stats the other way) but it at least appears plausible that he could help our PK in a way that’s probably not going to be discussed in MSM places.

limited to games against the caps, but i’d thought earlier in the season that corvo was a classic example of an offensive defenseman who was improving in his own end with age. will be interesting to see how he’s used. poti 2.0? (PP specialist becomes PK specialist?)
Weird. I had that Poti 2.0 thought earlier but I banished it because I want to give Corvo a fair shake. I don’t know that PK specialist will ever be an accurate description for either of those guys, but above average is all you need if they bring the offense. Ahem. I think it’s probably unlikely that we re-sign Corvo, but if he plays well and GMGM can keep him, that could work out well.

WTF People?
Everyone’s talking about Corvo like he’s Pothier 2.0. The guy is a #1/2 defenseman. He plays more per night than Mike Green. Let that sink in for a second.
Is he a “great” defenseman? No, of course he’s not. But if he were, he wouldn’t have been available for what amounts to a busted prospect and a 2nd round pick.
Corvo is a massive upgrade over our bottom three defensemen. He also provides an excellent hedge against people taking runs at Green during the playoffs.
Beyond all this, his speed and passing ability seem to be a good fit for our system.
Stop crying in the cornflakes because we didn’t get Hamhuis and realize that we actually took a pretty good step forward today.

I’m slowly backing off the ledge as I read the reports on Corvo. Wish there were a more unanimous consensus that he’s a true top-4 D but if he’s significantly better than Pothier than that’s good.
Carolina might suck, but Corvo is still on their top-pairing. We’re not even going to ask him to do that – he’s going to get to be a 3-5 guy for us. He’ll help ensure that Green doesn’t skate 30 mins/night for the remainder of the regular season.

See stat dump below. I’d be happy with Corvo on Green’s pairing.
Green-Corvo

looks like a pretty solid top two pairings to me. But then, I’ve been a Corvo fan for a while now. He’s very balanced. We shouldn’t forget that he contributes more on D than on offense.

You and I have had disagreements in the past, D’ohboy, but we see eye-to-eye on this. I got jobbed earlier today for suggesting that McPhee should’ve packaged Corvo in with Walker. Of course, that’s when everyone here was holding out for Hamhuis or Volchenkov. Poile said he needed to be “wowed” to let go of Hamhuis, and Volchenkov wasn’t coming cheap either from a decent Ottawa squad.
I think this is the best backline help McPhee could’ve gotten. And it pisses me off.
The biggest thing I didn’t like about Corvo was that I assumed he would cost a First round pick based on the market. Not giving up a first for him is a steal, IMO.

I’m down on Osala, so I think it’s a great deal. If Osala can’t succeed on this year’s Hershey squad, then maybe he ain’t that good.
I like Pothier, but it was clear that Boudreau didn’t trust him and there ain’t space on the blue line for everyone. someone had to go, and he’s a natural.
And the 2nd feels like the right price for Corvo. Not a league elite, but a very solid defenseman. As I said elsewhere, he’s better in my opinion than any other defenseman traded in the last couple days.

If Osala can’t succeed on this year’s Hershey squad, then maybe he ain’t that good.
Even if he is good, we clearly have better. When you’ve been passed on the depth chart by Bouchard… I had him in my top 10 recently (which seems like a mistake), and I’m still a little tantalized by his upside, but I’m not torn up about this at all.
I really expected a first because if you look at the guys fetching seconds, Corvo is just much better. He’s a top pair guy, and you figure you don’t get a top pair/top line/top goalie on the deadline without including a first. Considering Burke said negotiations over Kaberle wouldn’t open a first, I’m pretty surprised the best GM ever Jim Rutherford couldn’t get more.

But where was he in “Most Valuable Caps”?
we're not gonna allow someone like Downie to go after him.
Osala? Hmmm. I don’t remember but he wasn’t that high. After all the roster players except Theo and Nyls (my last two) and after the more skilled prospects but ahead of the checkers like Beagle.

the argument for OO that i could see was that no other prospects had his size/ projected as a power forward type. but the results on the ice stand for themselves. i’m betting GMGM was right to give up on him.
I’m betting with GMGM as well.

I was also thinking that moving Osala didn’t exactly gut the HER roster either. They can continue their winning ways.
Now helping to keep an eye on all things Gr8 at Alex Ovetjkin.
Yup. The lost a 4th line guy. Oh well. They can call up Dubuc for now and then use Eakin when his season ends. I’d suggest SDR as well but I suspect he’ll be playing almost as long as they will.

There you go. Lose OO, gain Q. No big deal. Now they are pretty much guaranteed to have Carlznerson for the entire playoff run and Sloan. That team is going to be a force. I love it.
Not only did we improve our team more than PIT improved, we also depleted our farm less than they did.

Think about it
If we gave up Osala, Pothier, and a 2 pick for Corvo, what would DH and Kaberle have cost? This is a great move, I’m happy

Glad I didn’t spring for that $80 Osala practice jersey back in the day.

I’m also very happy we don’t have any Australians or Kiwis. Just not that good in the room.

I disagree. It’s great for the room. there’s a Kiwi on my team and just having him speak makes everyone laugh.
Fucking hilarious accent.

Hey:
I have to wear shoulder pads because:
1. I don’t trust anyone in our league to keep their shots below head high. (Yes, I’m looking at you).
2. My pants have suspenders and won’t stay up unless the pads are there.
we're not gonna allow someone like Downie to go after him.
I pick corners and you’re like 7 feet high on skates. Don’t worry about me. I’d be more worried about the ridiculously reckless stick control.
I didn’t realize we were in the fashion league. Get a belt.

ridiculously reckless implies that there is at least some.

True story. I can’t believe anyone in that league wears anything but a full cage/shield.

Wore a half shield for my first game. Took 4 sticks in the visor and have been in the cage since.

I wear shoulderpads because I’m big and good (for my league) so guys like to take shots at me.

Seems like Kettler B is calling your name. Welcome aboard my friend, F&B is the guy in the Colgate jersey, and he likes it when you cherry pick.

Haha. You big goons and your shoulder pads. And say what you want, but at least I don’t go picking on smaller players.

Always going on about their bloomin’ onions. Crikey.
Now helping to keep an eye on all things Gr8 at Alex Ovetjkin.
I also agree with this.
Look, at some point you look at GMGM’s body of work and figure that he’s earned the right to do these deals. He hasn’t screwed the franchise and he’s generally made the team stronger. Benefit of the doubt.

I think Corvo is a better defenseman than Kaberle.
There's a fine line between arrogance and ignorance and only I manage to erase that line.
Agreed. He may not put the numbers up that Kaberle does, but he’s much more well rounded, has a much better shot, is much tougher, and his offense isn’t so far behind Kaberle’s that he can’t still play that same offensive role.

Alan Ryder’s 08-09 stats really favor Corvo. Listed below are Player Contribution (overall), Player Contribution Offense, and Player Contribution Defense
Joe Corvo: PC 75; PCO 26; PCD 48
to compare:
Mike Green: PC 134, PCO 84, PCD 49
Jeff Schultz: PC 56, PCO 6, PCD 51
Tom Poti: PC 39, PCO 9, PCD 30
Shaone Morrisonn: PC 36, PCO 10, PCD 26
Milan Jurcina: PC 35, PCO 7, PCD 28
John Erskine: PC 24, PCO -1 (that’s right negative), PCD 25
Karl Alzner: PC 18, PCO 4, PCD 15
Tyler Sloan: PC 17, PCO 3, PCD 8
So the Caps may very well just have acquired their 2nd best D-man. And just eyeballing Ryder’s chart, I think the Caps may have just acquired the best Defenseman who moved today.

Great stuff Gouldie. This should be much more heavily rec’d. He’s immediately top 3 defensively and 2nd best offensively on our team. That’s a great upgrade, I agree he’s our overall 2. I can’t think of a better D that moved on this whole deadline period. The more I look into him, the more I like him.

You can say what you want about the individual trades, but give George credit. He just pushed all his chips into the middle of the table and told Shero to show his cards. As players, I’m sure the Caps love it that their owner and GM have said we’re going to do everything we can to win the Cup now.
Today did feel like an “all-in” smartly day, didn’t it?

He just pushed all his chips into the middle of the table
McPhee did way better than that.
All his chips would have seen Carlson, Alzner, Varlamov, Neuvirth, or Holtby flying. It would have seen Vokoun or Niedermayer or Hamhuis or even Kovalchuk coming this way.
He pulled today’s trades off without putting all that many chips in the middle at all. This wasn’t an all-in, just a call and a big reraise. I’m thrilled. The 2010 Caps are quite a bit better than they were yesterday, and the 2015 Caps aren’t much depleted.

Gouldie, bringin’ the analysis. You rock, dude.

I like this perspective as well. It sounds like Osala is a fading prospect for us who will not get the opportunity to grow in our system. He needs to find an AHL squad that will sacrifice some wins to allow him to develop unconditionally and that’s not our philosophy at all.
I’m a bit happier that Corvo knows Boudreau less because Boudreau can deal with him from a character perspective or sign off on the deals than because it’s more likely that Corvo will be able to play our system.

Has anyone attempted to figure out the forward lines?
Ovie/Backstrom/Knuble
Semin/Belanger/Laich
Flash/Morrison/Fehr
Walker or Bradley/Steckel/Gordon
?
Free Eric Fehr!
Looks right to me (except Semin on RW and Laich on LW).
Belanger and Morrisonn will probably trade places periodically. Chimera slides into line 3 or 4 as needed. And I like having four or five solid fourth liners, because those guys are always getting dinged.

Thanks. IMO you HAVE to keep Gordon and Stecks in the lineup for PK purposes. I like grapejoos note about Belanger playing on the 3rd line, but Laich/Belanger is a nice defensive line too.
Free Eric Fehr!
One of the two at least. I wouldn’t give Walker a sweater over either if everyone’s healthy. but Chimera and Belanger bring some different skills.

Walker can go to the press box and watch the Caps every night until someone gets hurt. BB could also do a smart rotation at this point to keep all the checkers fresher down the stretch. Points aren’t at an absolute premium so he can afford to dress sub-optimal line ups.

Jason Chimera (groin, rumors out till post season?)
Joe Corvo (leg, says won’t be 100% ’till next season [above comment])
Milan Jurcina (hernia, ???)
Scott Walker (shoulder, surgery on 1/5)
Not feeling too confident right now.

Chimera’s been skating full practices lately, including the skate-til-you-drop drills. Who’s saying he’s out that long?
