What is the love-affair with Jurcina?
The only positive I see out of this is that Sloan isn’t the first replacement D-man.
He’s the best current pairing for Alzner. They’re comfortable and complement each other.

Corvo racked up 21 goals and 76 points in 106 games for the Boudreau’s Monarchs. Know what else he did? He got arrested and charged with felony assault with a weapon. The weapon? His foot. The circumstances? He grabbed a woman’s posterior in a restaurant and, at some point after she had fallen to the floor, punched and kicked her. In the face. The punishment? Thirty hours of autograph signing and a three-game suspension (for much more on the incident – as if you need it – click here).
Corvo reeks of desperation.

Caps Trades
By request, I am adding my thoughts to this discussion.
Scott Walker, RW, Carolina Hurricanes (Age: 36)
5’10, 196, Shoots: Right
2009-10 Cap Hit: $2.5 million, UFA in 2010-11
2009-10 Stats: 33 GP, 3-2-5, -4, 23 PIM, 9:50 TOI/G (0:27 PP, 0:22 SH), 50 Shots
Pros: Experience: Walker is a true veteran with 820 NHL games under his belt. He has scored 149 goals 39 PP, 12 SH) and 394 points in those games with 1,153 PIM. He also has 29 playoff games under his belt with 1-7-8, which includes a trip to the Eastern Conference Final last year. His playoff run included a wonderful punch on defenseman Aaron Ward http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ynS7OUUCLx8. His is well respected for his leadership, briefly serving as the captain of the Nashville Predators in 2003. He has three 20+ goal, 50+ point seasons under his belt, but that seems to be behind him. He seems to be an insurance policy on Jason Chimera because of the groin injury and he might have a few goals left in him before he’s done.
Cons: Age, he’s 36. Injuries are another concern, especially with his rough style of play. He missed a large chunk of this season after having shoulder surgery, and he has had concussion issues in the past. His production has dipped considerably, and he’s not playing many minutes per night. His contributions on ice would be limited. He is a $2.5 million role player at this point.
Price: Low. If we get 30 games out of Scott Walker, I think that will be more than an average 7th round pick would play.
Eric Belanger, Minnesota Wild (Age 32)
5’11, 187, Shoots: Left
2009-10 Salary Cap Hit: $1.75 Mil
Stats: 60 GP, 13-22-35, -1, 28 PIM, 15:45 TOI/G (2:22 PP, 1:41 SH), 120 Shots, Won 57.6% of 722 Faceoffs
Pros: He can win faceoffs by the truckload. He can play on the powerplay or the penalty kill. He’s having a career year offensively. He has 3-6-9 on the powerplay, too. He doesn’t take a lot of penalties. He has played 617 NHL Games with 119-174-293 and only 279 PIM. He also has 30 playoff games with 2-4-6. He also has only 19 Giveawayas to 31 takeaways.
Cons: His career year doesn’t mean a lot of scoring, he’s matched his usual production of 35 points with a quarter of the season to go. He won’t exactly set the world on fire, either.
My predicted asking price: Higher than we’d want because he’d probably be attractive to a team in real need of a checking forward who wins faceoffs, not every team has that. He isn’t doing much better than Brendan Morrison except in faceoffs and he’s not much younger or bigger. This looks like a sideways trade.
Actual asking price: A second round pick. It may not sound like much, but McPhee is hitting on a lot of second-rounders these days. It seems like Minnesota got what they wanted.
Q: Your rival, Sidney Crosby: dislike him?
Ovechkin: "I love him."
Q: You send him cards on his birthday?

Corvo is upgrade over Potsy, but not a huge one. My problem is our defense isn’t anymore defensive than it was before the day started. Over a decade and GMGM still hasn’t acquired a solid defensive defenseman.

After the brutal injuries to our blueline last playoffs, I really like that the Caps picked up a guy that can fill in the Green role if something happens. Corvo had a good finals run with Ottawa, I’m actually pretty pleased with the haul GMGM has pulled in.
It’s the classic argument…we got minor upgrades in spots…and we’re the #1 team in the league. But do you think we needed bigger/different upgrades to succeed in the playoffs.
by Davethecapsfan on Mar 3, 2010 3:16 PM EST up reply actions
No. This year’s Caps were already better than last year’s, and they barely lost to Pitt with a brutally injured D corps against an (IMO) better Pens team. The Caps didn’t make themselves the hands-down favorite today, but they will be a tougher team to play against in the playoffs than they were this morning. And they’re already #1 in the league in the standings. I’m not convinced GMGM didn’t do enough.
Its a step, its just isn’t the big step that everyone was hoping for. At least Vokoun and Hamhuis didn’t end up on a EC rival.
we're not gonna allow someone like Downie to go after him.
Realistically, the big upgrade pieces weren’t available for any reasonable offers. If one thinks that Leopold or Seidenberg are better than Corvo, then you could rightfully complain there. Still, their 2nd was worse than any other team, so that may have limited them. My hunch is that the Caps were in it for Hamhuis and balked at the price – they probably weren’t ready to give up Flash/Fehr for a UFA and I don’t blame them.
I like these moves.
That was kind of my point with the last sentence. I think that if Hamhuis was going to move it was going to be to the Caps. It would have cost a ton. I’m not the least bit dissatisfied with the day.
Maybe GMGM wasn’t willing to give up Flash or Fehr and that was why the Hamhuis deal didn’t go through. Would DP have turned down Fehr, Osala and a 2nd for Hamhuis?
we're not gonna allow someone like Downie to go after him.
I wouldn’t have turned that deal down were I GMGM. Plenty of forwards. Fehr’s worth less than he was before Walker and Belanger arrived.
Yes, but would Poile have taken that?
There's a fine line between arrogance and ignorance and only I manage to erase that line.
I’m guessing he wasn’t interested, but that was the question.
A scoring winger that is way down the depth chart in Washington but could blossom with more ice time. A winger that might contribute today given your depth, or could pan out in the next two years. And a throw in pick to sweeten the deal for a UFA d man that can be abley replaced by guys on your roster. Seems like a pretty good fit to me.
Damn you and your lack of transparency trade deadline process.
we're not gonna allow someone like Downie to go after him.
Seidenberg maybe, no way Leopold is better than Corvo, IMO.
Killer_Carlson and Steckel Me Elmo are like brothers to me. And when I say brothers I don't mean like actual brothers. I mean it like how black people use it, which is more meaningful, I think.
Bad Corvo (turnovers) is inbetween Seidenberg and Leopold.
Good Corvo (a tighter game) is above Seidenberg
Bah-Ram-Ewe, Ovechkin will wreck you. Fear the Furious Fleece!
Agreed—Leopold isn’t better than Corvo, but I can’t really tell that Corvo’s noticeably better either. Both guys are solid minutes-eaters who can play on a middle pairing and add some occasional offensive upside. Both teams essentially gave up a 2nd rounder, with the Caps adding Osala and Pothier (who Corvo essentially replaces).
You could’ve done much worse (see: Just Jurcina). So could the Pens, if they’d have stuck with Skoula.
The only real question is which Corvo will we get. Even average Corvo is an upgrade over Pothier and we wanted to move him anyways.
by Davethecapsfan on Mar 3, 2010 3:50 PM EST up reply actions
Bingo. I think if Corvo’s playing for a contender, you’ll see decent play out of him. Not that I’m not hoping for the opposite.
He played well when he was a deadline trade a couple years back. He’s played for BB before and he’s well suited to BB’s system. I’m very hopeful.
Killer_Carlson and Steckel Me Elmo are like brothers to me. And when I say brothers I don't mean like actual brothers. I mean it like how black people use it, which is more meaningful, I think.
Agreed, but I think you are selling Corvo short. He’s the only guy in this discussion that’s a top pair D. Losing Caputi hurts PIT much more than losing OO hurts the Caps.
Killer_Carlson and Steckel Me Elmo are like brothers to me. And when I say brothers I don't mean like actual brothers. I mean it like how black people use it, which is more meaningful, I think.

Hmm…I’m still in favor of the deal from a Washington standpoint, but this may be a bit steep. I’m not one to place too much value in picks though, unless it’s a first-rounder or a high (top 5) second.
Look, the Caps are trying to win this year. Makes sense to give up what you need to to get the blueline help you need.
Exactly.
And people cannot complain that GMGM didn’t do anything to try to win it all this year.
And the good news is that NONE of these trades today are crippling for the future. Everybody acquired is a UFA and none of the big-time blue chip prospects were shipped out.

I bet McPhee was working on another deal (Hamuis) and when that fell through at the last minute he had to scramble to save face (Juice) and overpay for Corvo when someone of his ilk could have been had for cheaper just a few hours ago. Now he’s also left holding onto an uneccesary glut of forwards. This is a shitty day.
It wasn’t a shitty day…it just wasn’t as good as it could have been. Time will tell. It still all boils down to Varly staying healthy and finding his form again.
by Davethecapsfan on Mar 3, 2010 3:26 PM EST up reply actions
It may turn out OK, but you know it feels like right now? It feels like the Redskins’ draft where they picked up two WR and a TE in the first three rounds despite having needs in other areas. Yes, Belanger seems like a decent move to fill a hole. But what good does Walker do except create a log jam? And does Belanger’s insertion now mean that Fehr is going to sit every night?
We can rationalize all we want. They were already a good team. They didn’t sacrifice the whole future. But from where I’m sitting it just looks like McPhee bungled the whole situation.
Actually if it feels like that I won’t mind…Fred Davis might challenge Cooley for a spot and Devin Thomas has been showing signs of getting much better. I guess the bad part would be still no O line and you can compare that to our lack of solid D.
by Davethecapsfan on Mar 3, 2010 3:30 PM EST up reply actions
All of those picks might become something and maybe have even developed faster if the coaches had actually analyzed play on the field and replaced guys that were crap…i.e. have thomas return punts instead of El.
But that’s irrelevant because the last thing we needed was 3 pass catchers, particularly ones that weren’t going to play for 3 years (not that they would have known that (but they should have)).
Sloan is now the 8th defenseman… he may be heading back to Hershey

I think PHX, PIT, and OTT are the only teams that have (perhaps) really improved themselves the past 2 days.
What did they do other than Skoula in the past 2 days? Obviously Kovy was a huge get, but we’ll see what happens.
Kovy was a pretty huge deal. People are down on him right now because he hasn’t gelled with his new team yet and he had a poor performance in the Olympics but that’s a massive move.
No doubt. But if they don’t win the cup and he walks as a FA, you have to wonder. And I don’t think they’re going to win the cup.
Kovy wasn’t a problem last night against San Jose in building up a 3-0 lead. PPG and a big set up of their second goal with offensive aggression. They have 6 weeks to make the chemistry work and we really won’t be able to assess that deal until he shows what he has in the playoffs.

Walker: bad year and shoulder surgery, on an older player. Upgrades PK. Prognosis: Wishful thinking.
Belanger: Faceoff wins, 2nd or third line, might be asked to do more than he is capable of. Also brings in defensive specialty and MOST IMPORTANTLY upgrades the PK.
Corvo: Adds points from blueline, if he can get his sad act this year together. Maybe a fresh start helps that. Maybe not. wishful thinking.
JUICE: im ok with it for the price.

Corvo would rank 4th on the Caps D in points with only 34 games played.

yes, with 4 goals and 8 assists, -8.
The guy put up more than that in years prior. Carolina went from ECF to bottom dwellers in less than a year. thats a sad act. He aint the only actor, but he’s part of the cast.
The Caps are wishfully thinking he will turn it around in DC.
by The Jade Donkey on Mar 3, 2010 3:51 PM EST up reply actions
Agreed.
We now have some depth so if 4 of our top six defenders get hurt in the playoffs, we have players who can step in a replace them for a bit.
Furthermore, none of the guys we got today are signed for beyond this year so if any big mistakes were made, they can be easily fixed in the off season.
No blue chip prospects were traded away and neither were 1st rounders so we aren’t crippled going forward.
We may not have gotten everything we need but we made moves to make us better and to try to win this year.
Finally, when you’ve got guys coming from teams like Carolina and Minnesota who aren’t going anywhere this season to Washington, they’re going to be energized at the chance to play for the Cup. Walker himself said he would buy the plane ticket to come play here and waived his NTC to move up in the division. When was the last time you heard depth guys like him saying they were excited to come to Washington?

Um, goaltending...
So we upgraded slightly and added depth. Good. And now let us all step back, collect our thoughts, and realize we’re still banking on either Varlamov getting healthy and clutch or Theodore having a lights-out spring. Sigh…
Frustrating though that may be, there was no better option available. If they can’t take us there this postseason, you can be sure the Caps will address that in the offseason.
By upgrading the D and adding defensively responsible forwards, banking on our goalie is the last thing we have done.
