Yeah did look freakish. I would have guessed head or shoulder by that clip. Ask Forsberg if feet injuries can derail a career. (But BAMF Doug Gilmour didn’t let no fucking foot injury slow him down!)

Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Any reason to think that Hamhuis can’t be signed this summer though? With Pothier and ShaMo coming off the books, a couple of young guys in the stable coming up that are cheap (relatively). I know DH will be big money but you pay big money for legit top 4 guys.
Oh, and I traded for Hamhuis is NHL 10 and he won the Norris. The Caps need him.
we're not gonna allow someone like Downie to go after him.
I could see them talking to him, but I’m sure lots of people will and he’ll probably get paid more than GMGM wants to give up.

with a guy like hamhuis, do you stand a better change of signing his as an FA if you get him for the playoff run (i.e. a hometown discount) vs. just trying to sign him over the summer? if you were targetting him over the summer, wouldnt it be better to make a reasonable trade for him now to eliminate nashville’s opportunity to resign him?
Just trying to capture the spirit of the thing...
when you look at raises for Semin, Nick, Flash, Fehr and Schultz, that cap room starts to get eaten up pretty quick.
got about $20M of cap space (assuming this years cap) for next year not including backstrom, schulz, fehr and flash. assuming alzner/carlson/neuvy come up, thats about $3.5M in cap money. if nick gets $6M, then you still have about $10-11M if cap space. they will need some money to sign a dman and center to replace bmo…so yeah, not hard to spend that cap money. probably means the end for fehr, boyd gordon not to mention pots and shamo.

I have all 3 season DVDs. So far the first season is my favorite, but the first have of 4 is making me think 1 will get a run for its money.

My avatar approves.
Brock Samson was incredible in the first season, and I was a little disappointed that they scaled him back a bit. But they’ve done a good job developing supporting characters. Shore Leave is hysterical.

My prediction is we pick up Halpern and Juice. Pieces that marginally address our needs and guys that GMGM is very comfortable with. I sincerely hope I’m wrong.
Juice, perhaps, given he has recent success within our system and could be had for cheap. I don’t see Halpern back; I don’t think he’s enough of an upgrade over what we’ve got.

Right. I just really don’t like the argument that moving first round picks isn’t a big deal because “they’re essentially a 2.” They’re still very valuable, and without the first we’re “essentially starting with a third.”

Meh. From 20-40, I don’t think there’s as much of a difference in actual talent level as there is from 10-20, except in the most ridiculously deep drafts.
There's a fine line between arrogance and ignorance and only I manage to erase that line.
But were talking 25-55, not 20-40. 40 is an early 2 (which is essentially a 1?), but we won’t be picking there. Without a first we are starting off in Eric Mestery territory.

What are the chances of landing Volchenkov?
Are those chances “slim” or “none”? I think we could get Volchenkov for Alzner and a 2nd rounder. I don’t think Halpern has much to offer (sadly) because I really liked him as a player a few years back. Hamhuis would be possible, but it might take a first and a good Hershey prospect. To me, the most real scenario is we “do nothing”.
I would say “none.” Also, Volchenkov is good, but you don’t give one of your top defensive prospects for a rental.

Totally wishful thinking on Franson. How much have you seen of him, though? If he had played all season he’d be a top Calder candidate.
I think in four years he’ll be a better power play point guy than Weber or Suter. You wouldn’t believe the effectiveness difference when he’s out there on the PP than Suter or Weber. Its a totally different look.

I’ve seen a little of Franson but not much. He’s got great potential but Team Canada D is a whole other level. Plus, Canada heavily favors more experience on their blue line. How many guys from this team are going to be gone? 3? Maybe 4? Nieds and Pronger, probably Boyle, maybe Seabrook. You’ve got a toooooon of young D fighting for those spots so it’s way to soon to tell.

Yeah. You’re already jammed with locks with Doughty, Weber, and Keith in four years. Doubtful he gets a look unless he explodes. If he was American, though…

He’d have a much better chance, but for the first time I can remember it won’t be a picnic making Team USA’s D. I could honestly see John Carlson being left off.

Hopefully we won’t be seeing Jack Johnson in four years, is all I gotta say. I’m pretty confident Gleason and Whitney will be even more washed up.

Hate to break it to you but USA Hockey is in love with the Johnsons. Can’t get enough Johnson. Big Johnson, young Johnson, old Johnson, it makes no difference. They’ll both be there. Gleason and Whitney played their way off. Martin and Komisarek are still in the running. Then you have Bogosian, Carlson, Fowler all lurking plus any other uber-prospect that may develop in the next 4 years.
Killer_Carlson and Steckel Me Elmo are like brothers to me. And when I say brothers I don't mean like actual brothers. I mean it like how black people use it, which is more meaningful, I think.
I didn’t really think that J. Johnson stood out in a negative way. The only US D who really did that in my mind was Whitney.
I personally think Carlson’s a lock for the 2014 team, but that’s a long ways away.

Tavares is getting force-fed a crapload of PP time, and that’s responsible for fully 1/2 of all his points production. His skating is unimpressive.
He’s going to be decent, but in a few years, when Hedman and Duchene are perennial All-Stars, and Tavares is a 20-goal scorer and defensive liability, Isles fans are gonna be pissed.
There's a fine line between arrogance and ignorance and only I manage to erase that line.
I don’t know that they’ll ever really be pissed. They needed Tavares at this draft for so many reasons. I agree he’ll be a PP specialist but I think he’ll be more than a 20 goal guy. He should be 30 every year. His skating isn’t very good but he knows how to find those open areas and has ridiculous hands. He’s always been a finesse guy but channeling his inner Mike Knuble could really take his game to another level.
Killer_Carlson and Steckel Me Elmo are like brothers to me. And when I say brothers I don't mean like actual brothers. I mean it like how black people use it, which is more meaningful, I think.
The problem is, he’s just not that big. He’s only 6ft/200lbs. Duchene is about the same size and skates like the fucking wind.
(I fucking love Matt Duchene, though.)
There's a fine line between arrogance and ignorance and only I manage to erase that line.
I love Duchene too and I agree that he’ll be better. I just don’t think that Tavares is going to be a bust or anything. 20 is selling him short, especially with some of the young talent that will be around him. I could see him getting damn near 20 PPG a year.
Killer_Carlson and Steckel Me Elmo are like brothers to me. And when I say brothers I don't mean like actual brothers. I mean it like how black people use it, which is more meaningful, I think.
Yeah, my crystal ball says Tavares gets 30+ next year and 40+ thereafter. I don’t see him as the bust that you do. The guy’s got sweet hands and by all accounts is no slacker/headcase.
40 is pushing it but he’ll still be productive. I think 40 requires a little more ability to create on your own and I doubt he has the skating for that.
Killer_Carlson and Steckel Me Elmo are like brothers to me. And when I say brothers I don't mean like actual brothers. I mean it like how black people use it, which is more meaningful, I think.
of course, you add a badass to Tavares’ line, I could see him getting 40 easy
Driving under the influence of hockey since godknow's when.
I dunno. They’d need to have like a 30% PP for that to happen. Okposo is going to be with him for the long term. That’s a pretty awesome line.
Killer_Carlson and Steckel Me Elmo are like brothers to me. And when I say brothers I don't mean like actual brothers. I mean it like how black people use it, which is more meaningful, I think.
Maybe I’m doubtful because, as F&B points out below, he doesn’t have the speed (or size) to make his own room out on the ice. He’s going to be very dependent on getting tons of PP time and having a center that can set him up. Right now, he’s currently getting the former, but doesn’t really have the latter.
There's a fine line between arrogance and ignorance and only I manage to erase that line.
He is the C. He’ll stay the C I think. He’s going to be a Jokinen/E. Staal type C (give me the fucking puck!). Not a traditional playmaker.
Killer_Carlson and Steckel Me Elmo are like brothers to me. And when I say brothers I don't mean like actual brothers. I mean it like how black people use it, which is more meaningful, I think.
When he’s out on the PP, he’s the L, Dougie Weight is the C.

Doug Weight plays PP still! Hysterical.

“Fahrenheit 451”was pretty good. It at least moved along at a decent pace. I couldn’t stand “Lord of the Flies”. I had the whole plot and message figured out before I even read 100 pages. Bored me to tears.
The book I loved most from high school was “To Kill a Mockingbird”.

The point of the book was fine. We actually had some great debates in my ENG class. However, the book itself was boring and so obvious.

It is pretty obvious but I don’t care. Some great quotes. I’ll still bust out a nice “IIIIII’ve got the conch!” when the mood strikes me. And “sucks to your asmar” is still a favorite.

I actually ended up reading 1984 on my own before it was even a school assignment, so that helped.

My favorite thing about “Catcher in the Rye” is that the vast majority of people who love it or hate it still fail to interpret it correctly.

So agreed. I had to take a bunch, too, since I was a Journalism major. My very first semester I took an upper level english because I had already taken 101 during HS. I got a C and cried. It was so hard. The next semester, the same class was offered as an Honors Only class. Yay for me being screwed.

My issue, especially in high school, was that so many teachers were so in to pushing allegory and symbolism that it felt like every reading assignment was a code to figure what the author really wanted to say. I very much resented that.

The problem is that there is a belief that ENG classes are the place to teach critical thinking skills. This more so than the other disciplines due to all the reading/writing. I understand the purpose, but from what I’ve seen it doesn’t work well. Everything feels like a task. As you mention it takes the enjoyment out of reading.
In addition, the focus of the curriculum on what ENG lit folks like doesn’t help one bit.

History classes are a better place to do this, and I think they are in the AP history classes, but the regular history classes are mindless facts
Aim for the head baby Jesus
my vote is we don’t teach history until kids get to college. Too many kids in the 200-level history classes I TA’ed were completely unprepared for college-level history but thought they were hot shit because they passed AP. And too many in my 100-level classes were just completely misinformed donks.

Business students…there’s a whole other level of absurdity.
Disagree. The MBA students I had classes with were insufferable. As a general rule their egos outweighed their talent.
I have to say, 99% of the MBAs I meet make me go “Do they just hand out MBAs to everyone who asks for one?”

I have to say, 99% of the MBAs I meet make me go "Do they just hand out MBAs to everyone who asks for one?"
I think a big part of it is that MBA is viewed by a lot of people as the path to a great career in business and, for many of them, a big house, a Jaguar, a nice wardrobe, being a known person in their industry, etc. As a result a lot of people go for the degree and it’s starting be somewhat cheapened, unfortunately.
MBA programs tend to have a broader range of students in terms of age and experience compared to other higher education programs. I agree that there are many MBA students who were cocky and jacks-of-all-trades, masters-of-none. It’s usually those who go right into grad school from undergrad. But those who actually had professional experience and treat the classes as forums for thinking and problem-solving and application to real shit tend to rise to the top.
The other issue is MBA programs vary widely from school to school much less the different btypes of MBA programs. You’ve got traditional, evening, and executive programs at many schools. The way each is run can be very different even at the same school.
"You ever use smelling salts, every time you type a bad blog?" Brooks Laich
Perhaps that’s the case. I just had far, far too many MBA students in my graduate classes who thought they were really slick and VP of a big company in waiting and who had zero interested in critical thinking or problem solving.
That was actually my specific issue. A lot of them seemed to want to memorize and regurgitate rather than use the tools they’d been given to evaluate a problem.
That said, I only took courses with about 40 MBA students, and it wasn’t an elite school, so, small sample size and all that.
I had a beyond awesome hs world history teacher my senior year. So I took some american history classes at Maryland and loved them. The professor was brilliant. He really helped you get a good grasp of what was going on. I still remember random factoids because of those classes.

Perhaps what I should have said was people too often fail to interpret it at all. I’ve encountered a lot of people who love it (or perhaps loved it, since this was when I was younger) because they thought Holden’s observations of society were brilliant and therefor love the book, and a lot of people who think he’s a whiny dope who therefor hate the book.
Too many people who never get past the narrator.
Novels like Catcher are a double-edged sword. It’s easy to read and accessible, so people tend not to look below the surface.

“Waiting for Godot” is awesome. But this conversation got me thinking, I’m more or less the same way. The great books I’ve read and really like (“Waiting for Godot”, “1984”, “As I Lay Dying”, “Catcher in the Rye”) I’ve read either on my own or by choice for school. The only assigned ones I can think of that I really loved (at least off the top of my head) were “A Farewell to Arms” and “Lord of the Flies”.
“All Quiet on the Western Front” goes down as my favorite “forced read” in school. It’s been assigned to me twice, once in HS once in College, I read it both times then. I’ve also read it twice on my own. That’s gotta be up there for favorite book of mine too.

We don’t need what Whitney provides offensively, but I have always liked Whitney as a player, and he does perform under pressure (Game 7 OT goal v. Calgary in 94, for example). I think it’s interesting that Whitney was Pat Falloon’s underrated linemate in San Jose, and Falloon dropped off the radar years ago, while Whitney’s still going strong.
Anyway, not a need I see, but there’s worse players to have on your team.
The fact that you have to go to ’94 when he won a Cup in 2006 says a lot…

What Do We Really Want?
I’d rather GMGM do nothing than trade away a valuable pick/prospect for a marginal rental player. That said, there are a few players who would make our club better who would be worth parting with some assets:
Hamhuis, Niedermayer, Vokoun and Thomas.
The later in the day it gets, the less likely a Caps move becomes, IMO. As GM’s scramble to do something, the asking prices may go up. I just don’t see us making a ridiculous move.

I agree on Hamhuis and Vokoun. Niedermayer would be great but isn’t going anywhere. That’s probably true of all 3, actually. Thomas would be a cap disaster. I think Owen Nolan and Seidenberg and guys like that could still contribute, but I’m beginning to have my doubts the Caps do anything.
Not trying to call you out or anything, but what rational reason do you have to to think this? Several others have expressed this sentiment in this thread for no reason other than the fact that the Caps haven’t done anything yet.

I think values of guys that could move are extremely inflated, if reports are to be believed. GMGM isn’t the type of guy to step in and win a bidding war, and the Caps don’t “need” to do anything if you believe the standings. For example, 10 teams are in on Raffi F’ing Torres? The experience of last year’s deadline doesn’t help me shake the feeling, but it’s just a hunch.
Last year, GMGM was hamstrung by the salary cap.

I’m aware. That’s still my hunch. I think GMGM is just a very risk averse guy (at least with this core he’s put together) and he’s not going to sacrifice anything more than a 2nd rounder, a minor prospect, or a fringe roster player for the types of guys that seem to be available.
I wish he would make a swing-for-the-fences move with Vokoun, but it sounds like FLA is going to wisely hold him to trade in the offseason.

I’m going to be somewhere between “a little bummed out” and “depressed” if the Caps don’t make a move. It would be one thing to take no action had the Pens and Devils done the same, but doing so now would be terribly unsatisfying.
Meh. I still don’t think the Devils have really made themselves that much better. They’re going to go as far as Brodeur’s aged haunches take them. After watching him in the Olympics, I don’t think that’s very far.
