does potvin-on-nilsson count as a check that ended someone’s career? (going back to F&B’s and WM’s discussion from about a month ago.)

What a recall. I’m not familiar enough to really know what the deal was with Nilsson.

Killer_Carlson and Steckel Me Elmo are like brothers to me. And when I say brothers I don't mean like actual brothers. I mean it like how black people use it, which is more meaningful, I think.

yeah, me neither. i’m reading broken ankle, though, and i can imagine a busted ankle/foot lingering for the rest of a career. still, a pretty freak injury if that’s what happened.

Yeah did look freakish. I would have guessed head or shoulder by that clip. Ask Forsberg if feet injuries can derail a career. (But BAMF Doug Gilmour didn’t let no fucking foot injury slow him down!)

Flash for Hamhuis gives up a young skilled forward who won’t break the bank on his next contract. With Alex Semin questionable after next season, Giving up Flash ain’t like giving up a 2nd round pick – it’s something. Significant.

Agreed. I believe Flash is viewed as a long-term piece of GM’s dynasty puzzle, not just a guy that can be written off as any joe-schmo scoring forward that could be replaced.

Any reason to think that Hamhuis can’t be signed this summer though? With Pothier and ShaMo coming off the books, a couple of young guys in the stable coming up that are cheap (relatively). I know DH will be big money but you pay big money for legit top 4 guys.

Oh, and I traded for Hamhuis is NHL 10 and he won the Norris. The Caps need him.

we're not gonna allow someone like Downie to go after him.

I could see them talking to him, but I’m sure lots of people will and he’ll probably get paid more than GMGM wants to give up.

with a guy like hamhuis, do you stand a better change of signing his as an FA if you get him for the playoff run (i.e. a hometown discount) vs. just trying to sign him over the summer? if you were targetting him over the summer, wouldnt it be better to make a reasonable trade for him now to eliminate nashville’s opportunity to resign him?

when you look at raises for Semin, Nick, Flash, Fehr and Schultz, that cap room starts to get eaten up pretty quick.

by Reckless on Mar 3, 2010 9:22 AM EST up reply actions

got about $20M of cap space (assuming this years cap) for next year not including backstrom, schulz, fehr and flash. assuming alzner/carlson/neuvy come up, thats about $3.5M in cap money. if nick gets $6M, then you still have about $10-11M if cap space. they will need some money to sign a dman and center to replace bmo…so yeah, not hard to spend that cap money. probably means the end for fehr, boyd gordon not to mention pots and shamo.

i think the key words are “give away”. however, I’m going to put that through the GMGM trade deadline translator.

GMGM “I’m willing to part with young players or draft picks for your good players now, so long as they are UFA’s at seasons end. I dont have the patience to listen to your sports talk radio/blog trade proposals. I also have the best record in the NHL with the guys I have so dont think i’m desperate. Have a nice day”

What are the chances of landing Volchenkov?

Are those chances “slim” or “none”? I think we could get Volchenkov for Alzner and a 2nd rounder. I don’t think Halpern has much to offer (sadly) because I really liked him as a player a few years back. Hamhuis would be possible, but it might take a first and a good Hershey prospect. To me, the most real scenario is we “do nothing”.

by Dougeb on Mar 3, 2010 9:49 AM EST reply actions

I would say “none.” Also, Volchenkov is good, but you don’t give one of your top defensive prospects for a rental.

I’ve seen a little of Franson but not much. He’s got great potential but Team Canada D is a whole other level. Plus, Canada heavily favors more experience on their blue line. How many guys from this team are going to be gone? 3? Maybe 4? Nieds and Pronger, probably Boyle, maybe Seabrook. Hate to break it to you but USA Hockey is in love with the Johnsons. Can’t get enough Johnson. Big Johnson, young Johnson, old Johnson, it makes no difference. They’ll both be there. Gleason and Whitney played their way off. Martin and Komisarek are still in the running. Then you have Bogosian, Carlson, Fowler all lurking plus any other uber-prospect that may develop in the next 4 years.

Tavares is getting force-fed a crapload of PP time, and that’s responsible for fully 1/2 of all his points production. His skating is unimpressive.

He’s going to be decent, but in a few years, when Hedman and Duchene are perennial All-Stars, and Tavares is a 20-goal scorer and defensive liability, Isles fans are gonna be pissed.

There's a fine line between arrogance and ignorance and only I manage to erase that line.

by D'ohboy on Mar 3, 2010 10:23 AM EST up reply actions

I don’t know that they’ll ever really be pissed. They needed Tavares at this draft for so many reasons. I agree he’ll be a PP specialist but I think he’ll be more than a 20 goal guy. He should be 30 every year. His skating isn’t very good but he knows how to find those open areas and has ridiculous hands. He’s always been a finesse guy but channeling his inner Mike Knuble could really take his game to another level.

The problem is, he’s just not that big. He’s only 6ft/200lbs. Duchene is about the same size and skates like the fucking wind.

by D'ohboy on Mar 3, 2010 10:31 AM EST up reply actions

I love Duchene too and I agree that he’ll be better. I just don’t think that Tavares is going to be a bust or anything. 20 is selling him short, especially with some of the young talent that will be around him. I could see him getting damn near 20 PPG a year.

by Ginga on Mar 3, 2010 10:56 AM EST up reply actions

40 is pushing it but he’ll still be productive. I think 40 requires a little more ability to create on your own and I doubt he has the skating for that.

Maybe I’m doubtful because, as F&B points out below, he doesn’t have the speed (or size) to make his own room out on the ice. He’s going to be very dependent on getting tons of PP time and having a center that can set him up. Right now, he’s currently getting the former, but doesn’t really have the latter.

The book I loved most from high school was “To Kill a Mockingbird”.

I actually ended up reading 1984 on my own before it was even a school assignment, so that helped.

I once had a substitute teacher for a day in my 10th grade English class who spent the whole period ranting about how terrible “Catcher in the Rye” was. It wasn’t even part of the class.

The problem is that there is a belief that ENG classes are the place to teach critical thinking skills. This more so than the other disciplines due to all the reading/writing. I understand the purpose, but from what I’ve seen it doesn’t work well. Everything feels like a task. As you mention it takes the enjoyment out of reading.

In addition, the focus of the curriculum on what ENG lit folks like doesn’t help one bit.

I think a big part of it is that MBA is viewed by a lot of people as the path to a great career in business and, for many of them, a big house, a Jaguar, a nice wardrobe, being a known person in their industry, etc. As a result a lot of people go for the degree and it’s starting be somewhat cheapened, unfortunately.

MBA programs tend to have a broader range of students in terms of age and experience compared to other higher education programs. I agree that there are many MBA students who were cocky and jacks-of-all-trades, masters-of-none. It’s usually those who go right into grad school from undergrad. But those who actually had professional experience and treat the classes as forums for thinking and problem-solving and application to real shit tend to rise to the top.

by Cluster on Mar 3, 2010 11:56 AM EST up reply actions

The other issue is MBA programs vary widely from school to school much less the different btypes of MBA programs. You’ve got traditional, evening, and executive programs at many schools. The way each is run can be very different even at the same school.

"You ever use smelling salts, every time you type a bad blog?" Brooks Laich

by Carl Putnam on Mar 3, 2010 11:57 AM EST up reply actions

Perhaps that’s the case. I just had far, far too many MBA students in my graduate classes who thought they were really slick and VP of a big company in waiting and who had zero interested in critical thinking or problem solving.

That was actually my specific issue. A lot of them seemed to want to memorize and regurgitate rather than use the tools they’d been given to evaluate a problem.

That said, I only took courses with about 40 MBA students, and it wasn’t an elite school, so, small sample size and all that.

Perhaps what I should have said was people too often fail to interpret it at all. I’ve encountered a lot of people who love it (or perhaps loved it, since this was when I was younger) because they thought Holden’s observations of society were brilliant and therefor love the book, and a lot of people who think he’s a whiny dope who therefor hate the book.

The great books I’ve read and really like (“Waiting for Godot”, “1984”, “As I Lay Dying”, “Catcher in the Rye”) I’ve read either on my own or by choice for school. We don’t need what Whitney provides offensively, but I have always liked Whitney as a player, and he does perform under pressure (Game 7 OT goal v. Calgary in 94, for example). I think it’s interesting that Whitney was Pat Falloon’s underrated linemate in San Jose, and Falloon dropped off the radar years ago, while Whitney’s still going strong.

Anyway, not a need I see, but there’s worse players to have on your team.

What Do We Really Want?

I’d rather GMGM do nothing than trade away a valuable pick/prospect for a marginal rental player. That said, there are a few players who would make our club better who would be worth parting with some assets:

Hamhuis, Niedermayer, Vokoun and Thomas.

The later in the day it gets, the less likely a Caps move becomes, IMO. As GM’s scramble to do something, the asking prices may go up. I just don’t see us making a ridiculous move.

I think values of guys that could move are extremely inflated, if reports are to be believed. GMGM isn’t the type of guy to step in and win a bidding war, and the Caps don’t “need” to do anything if you believe the standings. For example, 10 teams are in on Raffi F’ing Torres? The experience of last year’s deadline doesn’t help me shake the feeling, but it’s just a hunch.

I’m aware. That’s still my hunch. I think GMGM is just a very risk averse guy (at least with this core he’s put together) and he’s not going to sacrifice anything more than a 2nd rounder, a minor prospect, or a fringe roster player for the types of guys that seem to be available.

I wish he would make a swing-for-the-fences move with Vokoun, but it sounds like FLA is going to wisely hold him to trade in the offseason.

by grapejoos on Mar 3, 2010 11:29 AM EST up reply actions

He does, but the system is going to stifle him, meaning he essentially becomes a PP specialist. That team is never going to score much more than 3 goals/game – they’ll live and die with Brodeur.

Evgeny Kuznetsov hams it up as he joins the Russia men's national team for the "Sweden Games" leg of the Euro Hockey Tour in Helsinki, Finland.

There's a bit of controversy as their game against the Finns is scheduled to be played in Helsinki's outdoor Olympic Stadium. Where the daytime temps are currently approximately minus-15 degrees Celsius, with periodic heavy snow.

This interview with head coach Zinetula Bilyaletdinov is fascinating, as he frets about the weather and especially when the reporters press him on the leaked reports that Kuznetsov will be centering the top line for Team Russia, just weeks after his 20th birthday.
