Gabby & end of Calgary game. Trave-sham-ockery (sp?)
What the hell was going at the end of the Flames game?
Here is my list of grievances in no particular order:
- Ovechkin playin approx 28 minutes in the third period
- Gabby doing some extraordinary measures to try and tie up a 2 goal deficit
- pulling the goalie with 2+ minutes
- Putting Ovechkin out as your non-PP pointman (pulled goalie is not the same thing)
- leaving Ovie out there for the entire two plus minutes when he'd been one the ice more than the linesman that period
- putting a purely skill lineup out in the waning minutes of a chippy game
I know Bruce is trying to compel his boys to play to win every game, and I applaud that.
What I DON'T applaud is putting the guys in a vulnerable position, late in the game -- when they're tired, and more prone to injury, not to mention wearing down before the playoffs.
Ovie was throwing his body around late in the game, yet was completely exhausted, not a good recipe. Mike Green was even grabbing with his hands to try and stop a SHOT on the empty net (hello broken hand in a MEANINGLESS GAME).
etc, etc.... it was a CF if I've ever seen one. Either the patients were running the asylum, or Gabby got a bit of (what they refer to in auto racing as) the red mist.
Not smart. Not smart at all.

Booing Bruce’s players apparently puts him on tilt… I like the theory.
Great. Now I have to change my name to "Jaromir meet Alex".

I’m mostly with you, but I don’t mind pulling the goalie early. We were pushing and needed a goal there if we were going to get back in the game.
Definitely didn’t like Green using his hands to make that save. I made a save on a backhand shot in the pick up game and my palm is bruised, can’t even imagine taking an NHL shot to the hands.
Killer_Carlson and Steckel Me Elmo are like brothers to me. And when I say brothers I don't mean like actual brothers. I mean it like how black people use it, which is more meaningful, I think.
the back of the glove is your friend. We won a game without a goalie once a couple years ago, and I had to make a bunch of back hand of the glove saves.

IIRC AO did a save like that last season and got it bruised, had to skip a practice I think.

For future reference, I’d suggest that these thoughts could have been put in the recap thread, or even in the day’s clips thread for your dining and dancing pleasure.

Indeed.
I’m not closing it or anything, just as an FYI in the future. As you were…

RE: Pulling the goalie early
It’s one of the most glaring mistakes that NHL coaches make on a regular basis, all of them. I’ll bet that in 5, 10, 15, 20 years or so, you’ll see goalies being pulled far earlier.
The optimal strategy for pulling a goalie if your offense is average, is around 4 minutes before the end of regulation, and down 2 goals it’s even earlier. I don’t remember where I read it, but I’ll see if I can dig it up.

Really? Would be interesting how those numbers were arrived at. The usual standard is 1 minute for 1 goal, 1:30 for 2.
Yea, crap. I really don’t remember where I saw it, but I have been thinking about it.

I don’t believe that. In 4 minutes the other team will most definitely get a chance and probably put the game away.

Well, yes, that stands to intuition. But isn’t the dialectic of pulled goalies that you don’t really care if the other team gets a chance and put the game away, as long as you are maximizing your chances of scoring tying goal(s). Not speaking here to whether the 4m/1.5/1m formulas are right or wrong, just to the broader question of whether that factors.
