Sunday Caps Clips: Flames @ Caps Game Day
Your savory breakfast links:
- Previews of this afternoon's game against the Flames from Vogs, Peerless and NHL.com, and be sure to check out our SB Nation partner Matchsticks and Gasoline for coverage from the other side of today's match up.
- To refresh your memory, this is the first and only meeting of the season between these two teams (and only the fourth post-lockout match-up), who last met in Calgary back in October of 2008.
- With Boyd Gordon, Scott Walker, Brooks Laich and now Brendan Morrison and Shaone Morrisonn all likely out of today's game, that depth (at least up front) has gotten shallow, fast. [CI]
- Alex Ovechkin is still the favorite to win the Hart in most people's minds. [The Hockey News]
- Great pic of a young Bruce Boudreau. [TweetPhoto]
- John Walton and Ron Weber; talk about must-listen radio. [OFB]
- Per the HHoF, on this date back in 1975, "Washington recorded the only road victory in their first season, when Nelson Pyatt's 2 third period goals gave them a 5-3 win at Oakland. The win ended their NHL-record 37 game road losing streak. They finished the year 1-39-0 on the road." Oof.
- Finally, happy 38th birthday to Jan Benda and happy 52nd to Lou Franceschetti.

Looooooooou!
He was so much fun to watch. He would try all sorts of moves that Mario, Wayne and other skilled players would try, and once in awhile he’d pull one off…. I think the prototypical Lou moment was a game against Hartford, Lou is coming down the left wing and the Whaler defenseman has him lined up for a hip check. The defender hits Lou perfectly and over her goes, Lou goes over and lands on his butt, and the puck goes past the defender harmlessly…or does it?
Lou gets up quickly, picks up the puck in stride and is now in on a breakaway, and he puts it past the Whaler goalie.
He never gave up in a game, and that’s why he was popular wherever he played…
Let's go Caps!
I recall loving him for the “I want to go the opposite way, so I’ll just slam into the boards in order to reverse my momentum” move.

I want to wear my MP shirt to the game today… but it’s black, so I wouldn’t be “rocking the red”… but I might have to anyways :)

Do you have a red long-sleeved shirt you could wear underneath? Cause I would give that a serious pass today. I’m really excited for Matty P.
Sometimes, you really just want to hit a b**ch.
I don’t know that I do… but I’m sure I can find something! So freaking excited :)

How are you feeling today? Did you sweat out the sickness? Thanks so much for coming, I know it had to hurt a little but I really appreciate it.

I don’t mind people not rocking the red during the regular season, but if you feel bad about, the marketing is doing it’s job.

Is an away Caps jersey still “Rocking the Red”? Because I think I might want to wear my Knuble jersey during playoffs, and I am still unsure myself.
I agree that it’s ok to not “rock the red” during the regular season…but then again I’m that guy owns loads of other jerseys and I want to wear them to the games.

Most games it seems the Caps should win easily they don’t (at least that’s my impression). I think (hope) this one will be different. 5 GA to the league’s worst offense sets up DC pretty well, and I think all Ovechkin needs is one to find his touch again. Retaking the points lead by nighttime is definitely not out of the question.

Congrats to the reporter who put that story together. It takes a lot of guts to write something in Pittsburgh that makes Ovechkin look like a decent guy. As fans, we all get caught up in just the black and white stereotypes and forget that there’s a whole other side to these guys that we never see. I’m sure someone could write the same kind of story about Crosby and Malkin that would shock Caps fans.
No doubt. When you’re the fan of the opposing team, you’re only going to see the negative. It was a little weird to see this story today; that’s sort of out of left field. As we’re playing them again next week, might have made sense to hold it until then.

Good look
Great read. The Carlson anecdote and the balanced tone make this a winner. Nice to see that someone in Pittsburgh can respect achievement and impact on this town. I do think that I’m the kind of fan Ovie brought in but who has stayed due to the passion of the fans at places like Japers’, the exciting style of play, and the story of players equally responsible for their success like Knuble, Backstrom, and Laich as well as the hope of players like Carlson.

I’ve found in the other arenas I’ve visited (and I’m close to a double handful at this point) that fans are the same everywhere you go. Everyone boos penalties to their team, legit or not. Everyone boos and whoops players. They all have their own things they do, stupid or not. It’s not worth getting bent out of shape over – my section is starting to do the “How much time is left, Wes?” thing at the end of a period.

See my comment below. We don’t look any more foolish than other teams who boo former players (which happens a lot) or the Flyers fans who boo Crosby or the Canadiens fans who boo Ovechkin. If anything, the only thing it does is say “We hate you because you have talent.”
Case in point – I don’t think anyone whooped Sami Lepisto.

No whooping for Pothier—he’s a good guy and didn’t ask to get traded. And he has talent. I’m glad he’s becoming valuable to that team.

and he was probably devastated by the trade. He stuck with this team for years and finally when the time comes for them to make a serious playoff run, he gets traded to a team that is on the outside looking in.

Funny, I thought CF75 was claiming lack of talent for Pothier hence no whooping necessary but maybe I misunderstood. Personally I just don’t like whooping, especially for players who were loyal and good and accessible Caps like Pothier.

I must admit I didn’t pick up on the whooping for Pothier if it occurred. For the record, I don’t think it would have been good form to have whooped him. He was a good guy and an inspirational story (for his comeback from his concussion).
I don’t claim Pothier lacks talent. But wonder if he is benefiting from a fresh start in Carolina.

For the record, OP, I wish we hadn’t gotten rid of Murphy or Gonchar. I wish Gonchar was still a Cap. But Gonchar was prone to a few defensive mistakes, and I wasn’t whooping him before he left. Once he left, though, the whoop was something fun I could do to get into the game, and if he really lets it hurt his feelings, he has multiple million reasons (Or one really big one) that he can drown it out.
The fact that Larry Murphy won a couple of cups and is in the Hall of Fame means we can’t have a little bit of fun at his expense(That he’s just going to laugh off with his teammates later)?

I was a big Gonch fan also, so I went to remind myself what we got in the trade.
The trade ended up being Gonchar for S. Morrisson and J. Schultz. There was another draft pick, Mikhail Yunkov, but I can’t find him on any tops Caps’ prospects list.
Definitely a good trade, given the timing and the long term strategy, but a Gonchar/Green point pairing on the PowerPlay would have been nice.

If I recall
Murphy was necessary to make the North Stars take Gartner for Dino, I don’t think they’d have taken the straight winger swap.
And yes, Murph is a Hall of Famer, but remember, some of the reason he’s a HoFer is for what he did in Washington. It’s not as if they traded him away after one season.

I am staying positive. I’m just scratching my head trying to figure out the lines: whether MP will be in; whether Flash will be a center: whether Ovi will get some goals and points today. But given their last loss I’m hoping for some energy.
by capsyoungguns on Mar 28, 2010 10:07 AM EDT up reply actions
If it’s MP called up, more likely that Flash is on the wing, since MP is a natural center. I’m thinking:
8-19-22
25-18-28
14-85-16 (this line was a bucket o’ fun earlier in the year)
53-39-10
Hanlon's Razor: Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.
As long as MP’s not playing on the fourth line, he’s going to be successful. He might still have some success on that fourth line, but it looks rough.

Step #1 on Reducing Unnecessary Head Shots
My very wet St. Louis Post-Dispatch this morning has a summary of the “Blues Restricted Free Agents This Summer.”
Alongside Erik Johnson and Alex Steen, the article lists Cam Janssen with his 2009-1010 stats: 40 games, 0 goals, 0 assists, 0 points, -3. What they forgot to mention is Janssen’s 168 penalty minutes.

I agree. Janssen would seem to have the largest disparity, in terms of points and PIM per game.
Knopka leads the league with 236 PIM (on nhl.com), but that’s in 67 games. But — to reinforce your point – he only has 2G, 2A all season.
My son and I are heading to Blues-Oilers this afternoon. The Oilers have guy in the same bucket that I haven’t heard of: Zack Stortini: 69G, 3G, 8A, 153PIM. For his career — 216 games and 640 PIM. That’s actually worse than Janssen (203G, 522PIM).
I can only hope they fight in the 1st period and get tossed.

Yeah, but Konopka is also one of the best faceoff guys in the league. He’s not just there to drop the mitts.

For those of you who may think I’m on the ledge last night; I’m not. I was actually encouraged. We’ve proven over and over we can score in this league, and goaltending has been a bigger concern. Rinne has been standing on his head for nearly a solid month and now has the 2nd most shutouts in the league. I’m a pretty happy camper this morning. If we lose to Florida, though…

I know~
But actually, the way the team plays, they remind me a lot of Washington in the early Glen Hanlon days. They win games because they outwork you.

About our (lack of) depth...
I’m not too worried, it sounds like several of the players out now are out for rather temporary reasons. While I am NOT a fan of BB healthy scratching starting guys anymore (let’s nail down our lines and get into a grove), I’m all for him/the team being more conservative and resting guys who might need it so they’ll be 100% come playoff time. We’ve got a somewhat unique advantage here, where we have both the points and the team depth to rest guys who might need it. I’m all for it (esp against a team like Calgary).
If “being 100% come playoff time” means you need teeth removed, let’s get it done now.

I wonder why Sha Mo was scratched on Thursday if he only got his wisdom teeth removed this Friday.

Have you ever had wisdom teeth removed when they're a problem?
They can be extremely painful prior to removal…

The scratch before the Carolina game and the news on his teeth certainly did make me wonder if he was having trouble with them (and prompted the scratch).
I did have my wisdom teeth removed nearly 25 years ago. I wasn’t having trouble with them particularly but the dentist did say it was about time and not to wait much longer. For the record, I did end up moving my surgery two months later due to stuff going on at work.
Rocking the Red since 1975
Outcomes can vary a lot. Let’s just say I am old enough to be a parent to most players on this team and I still have 3 of my wisdom teeth. I had one out in my late 20s because it was impacted, got dry socket, and was sick for a week because of it. Hence, I have not jumped at getting the others out and won’t unless they become problematic.
I too am of parental age for most of these guys but am fortunate enough to still have all four wisdom teeth. So I can only imagine ShaMo’s pain. Now the root canal I had….lots of pain! But then when these guys get their teeth knocked out I imagine that their dental surgery included a root canal or two.
by capsyoungguns on Mar 28, 2010 11:15 AM EDT up reply actions
Root canals are the worst; I’ve had one (and as I tell my kids it’s from not visiting the dentist enough during college). My youngest chipped both top front teeth of the middle son at 2 different times playing knee hockey in the basement — once in frustration, the other by accident. One of those teeth eventually required a root canal, then both veneered. They wanted to wait until he was an adult to cap. The 1st chipping he was a 5th grader and I cried for a week every time I looked at his teeth; they had been perfect. People thought it was from “real” hockey, not understanding they are protected then, but not in our basement!
That is amazing that you still have all four wisdom team. I’m sure ShaMo is currently all swelled up at the moment and uncomfortable. Don’t expect to seem him back in the lineup until Thursday, at the earliest.
My cheeks were swollen for several days. But luckily didn’t get “dry socket” or anything like that. And didn’t have to use the “fancy” pain killer stuff. (I had had the prescriptions filled but rarely used.)
Have luckily avoided root canals. I’ve had a couple of crowns and one implant done.

The game notes dropped in my box a few minutes ago. Interesting that Perreault is not listed on the roster, not even as a call up. I know this stuff is prepped in advance (like last night), but he was called up yesterday.

It’s not like this is news, but it keeps getting closer to reality, and I’m still super pissed that the Caps can’t get any spotlight without Crosby:

This is all based on a short article from a Pittsburgh paper based on speculation. All the guy did was look at the Steelers’ schedule and see they don’t have a home game at the end of the season (http://post-gazette.com/pg/10087/1046280-61.stm). If they really want a large stadium to play in, have it at FedEx Field, where it fits 100,000 people, as opposed to Heinz’s 65,000.
Not a way I’d like them to go, as I would prefer it held at a baseball stadium, but why does it have to be at Pittsburgh? There’s no reason we can’t host one. I wouldn’t mind them playing someone else other than Pittsburgh too, but I doubt that’s going to happen.
Just say no to Fedex Field.
And if Pittsburgh is going to play in another Classic, they are entitled to be the home team this time, I just feel it’s not their turn.

"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
I’d rather have it be in Nationals Park. The logistics of getting there are much easier than for FedEx.
Rocking the Red since 1975
Absolutely. Way easier to get to.
I’d also like to see a Winter Classic at Camden Yards one year, but I know that’ll never happen. To me, there’s just something way cooler about having them at ballparks. Nats park would look great, and even PNC park having a Winter Classic would look good.
Except there’s no hockey team in Baltimore. So, they’d have to do it at a venue closer to where an NHL team resided. (If they did it in Baltimore, the teams would almost have to be the Flyers and Caps since it’s in reasonable driving distance of both teams, more so for Caps fans than for Flyers fans.
Once in the Stone age, before the Nationals were in Washington and before I had kids, some friends and I went up to Philadelphia for a Phillies game and we said we were from Baltimore and they thought we were a little crazy for driving that far.
Rocking the Red since 1975
Yea, I don’t think it’ll ever happen there because Baltimore doesn’t have a hockey team. It would be interesting to see if a neutral site could work in a Winter Classic.
I don’t think Baltimore is too far for Philly fans though. I remember some O’s/Phillies games in Baltimore where there were a ton of Phillies fans. Actually, come to think of it, they traveled pretty well to DC for Nats games as well.
“The fans [are] unbelievable right now,” he said. “It’s crazy. If we are losing the game, the fans keep pushing us because they want free wings. It’s pretty sick when everyone screams ‘Unleash the fury.’ My first year, there was probably three people in the stands. Second year, five people. Right now it’s 20,000 people.”
Alex Ovechkin quoted from WaPo

I’ve always wondered what “Unleash the Fury” sounds like on the ice. I would not want to be the opposing team for that.

Me too. It sure made the Pens fans around us hunker down in their seats and one screamer who had a thing for J. Staal (majr screaming when he had the puck) stuck her fingers in her ear and gave a disgusted look to her friend.

He doesn’t want it proclaimed. No jinxing. Would rather be the underdog, take them by surprise, be underrated. Of course, hard to do when the Caps are at the top fo the league.
Then he should talk to the anonymous players in the ESPN interviews that were polled saying that the Blackhawks would win the Cup.
The anonymous players who haven’t considered the ‘Hawks’ problems at goal tending.
Rocking the Red since 1975

Since my stuff doesn’t get linked (for some reason), here’s my game preview
Whew. I just went to Matchsticks and Gasoline. They are in deep depression over their team, and apparently have no hope for today after their shellacking by Boston. I find the awe for the Caps a little terrifying—I get so use to the negativity. Our boys had BETTER bring their game today. No slow starts please. Get the puck into the net please. Be consistent and play well defensively please. Regain the magic of the streak where the puck always bounced the right way. PLEASE!
Quote: "The Capitals are the President’s Trophy winners in waiting after a season where they’ve scored their opponents into the ground….Their bell cow is number 8, of course, and although his occasional penchant for the stupid is lamentable, he’s a player that gets your attention for the right reasons more often than not. “Dynamic” hardly seems to cover Alex Ovechkin on many nights, and since the ascension of Nicklas Backstrom occurred two years ago, the Capitals have had a terrifying attack. They don’t just assemble those gaudy numbers on their lethal PP, either. They have the best 5 v 5 for/against ratio in the league by a considerable margin. If Mike Green can manage 3 more goals, they’ll finish the year with eight 20 goal scorers. The Flames might end the year with four, and most of the goals by Stajan and Hagman were accrued elsewhere, as we all know, unfortunately."
It should be required reading for the Caps’ players to read “Matchsticks and Gasoline” if they need any incentive for finishing them off.

FYI the hershey bears web page on facebook has an after video from last nights charity shaving of the head episode.
"Hey anyway I can get my name out there 30 years from now is great," Steckel said. "They will be like, ‘Who was that guy?’ Then they’ll look at the stats and say, ‘Well, at least that guy was really good on face-offs.’"
Injury situation is a bummer
Just the exact opposite of what I was hoping to see.
Hopefully these guys heal up in the next couple weeks.
"You want to start being part of the Rink? Fine, but more’s expected of you than John/Jane Cap Fan. Isn’t a good thing though that are injury situation hasn’t warranted 89 at forward or more callups a la last year’s playoffs? This has just kind of solved the healthy scratch situation for us in the short term. Too bad BMo’s going to be out, though, because he was just starting to put a hold on 3C for the playoffs.

The turnaround from a Boston meltdown is messing with their minds. The biggest focus should be on trying to clinch the Eastern Conference at home with two points. That’s one of your goals and you want to do it when you can.
