  • Also per the HHoF, on this date in 1989, "Washington beat the Islanders 3-2, to clinch their first Patrick Division championship. Dino Ciccarelli scored his 9th goal in his third week with the team, as the Capitals extended their team-record home winning streak to 7 straight games."

So, when is Alex O. going to stop trying to skate the puck at 2 defensemen and shoot right at their sticks? He must see that it’s not working out very well for him.

by DrinkingPartner on Mar 26, 2010 7:09 AM EDT reply actions

He’s trying to wait til the last possible second to shoot so that they create a screen. It’s worked pretty damn well since he got here. It doesn’t work EVERYTIME (especially with how much he shoots) but it works pretty damn good.

"the other day on sportscenter they said something along the lines of "the capitals score so much tiger woods is jealous" haha had me laughing hard while i was eating my cereal"

by highslot84 on Mar 26, 2010 7:13 AM EDT up reply actions

But he’s not adjusting. They had him in check all night last night, and he attempted the same moving screen 3 times to no avail. Granted, he was also by himself each time, so he didn’t have much choice in terms of playmaking, but I hate to see him try over and over and over again something that’s been taken care of. Now, that said, I’m betting he has more success with the exact same move against Calgary, who knows him a lot less. Still, I want to see game adjustments from him. I hope BB isn’t rubbing off on him there.

by DrinkingPartner on Mar 26, 2010 7:20 AM EDT up reply actions

Much better than I expected

Let me just say that I went into watching last night’s game expecting a HUGE letdown. This game had all the makings: the second half of a back-to-back, on the road, immediately following an emotional hard-fought win over a much (more) hated team. I hoped for the best, but was seriously primed for a 6-2 loss. I would say that in the first period I got exactly what I expected, but I was much more impressed (and pleasantly surprised) with what I saw in the second and third.

I think it says a lot about the character of this team when we get an effort like that, given everything I mentioned above and the fact that the playoffs are right around the corner and the Caps basically have the #1 position already locked up. I don’t think anyone could blame them for switching it to “auto-pilot” at this point, but I’m glad to see they haven’t. This is one huge way that this year’s team differs from last year’s. Even when they aren’t able to give their best effort, I truly believe that this team comes to play every night with a hunger to win games and focused to complete the task at hand. Last year, by mid-February, it seemed obvious that the Caps were just looking ahead to the playoffs on many nights — I’m just not seeing as much of that this year, and that’s a VERY good thing, IMO.

Is it just me, or does Campbell make it sound like Ovi is the only one who has ever pushed someone from behind?

by difer on Mar 26, 2010 7:42 AM EDT reply actions

Maybe Campbell is afraid that the Blackhawks will realize they can survive without him. Here’s a guy who was brought in to be an offensive leader, who’s the fourth highest paid defenseman in the league, yet is only 21st in scoring among d-man. Whining about the unfairness of it makes him sound like Nancy Kerrigan.

by b.orr4 on Mar 26, 2010 9:25 AM EDT up reply actions

I know, right? You’re hurt, it sucks, we get it, so shut the hell up already. I’ve gone from feeling bad for that guy to hoping he gets embarrassed on national TV. Whiner.

/Kerrigan was so hot, though.

by dgreen on Mar 26, 2010 10:34 AM EDT up reply actions

There is nothing remotely similar about the Harding attack on Kerrigan and Ovechkin/Campbell. The attack orchestrated by Harding was a criminal act. It also was gutless and small. To keep bringing that up in the same breath with Ovi is off the mark, IMO. The whining point would be better made with an appropriate example from hockey or another sport where something similar occurred, not a criminal act.

He is referring to the chiropractor who claimed to be associated with the Capitals, which is what got them caught up in the steroid investigation.

Dr. Douglas Owen Nagel, a Virginia chiropractor who was arrested today, is not affiliated with the Washington Capitals and is not the “team chiropractor,” as he has stated. Dr. Nagel’s office, however, has seen some of our players for standard, routine chiropractic services.

my physical therapist is also a certified chiropractor, and by far the best physical therapist I’ve ever had. he was able to ID underlying structural issues that caused my knees to take more pounding than typical. Addressing that issue has allowed me to run pain free for the first time since I was 12. He’s also done wonders to help my general body alignment and core strength.

No, they are not quacks.

My “real” doctor, when I separated my shoulder:

A) told me not to sling the arm, because it would get stiff
B) handed me ibuprofen
C) diagnosed it as a rotator cuff injury by poking me in the collar bone and listening to me scream.

At the time of the injury, I was unable to pick up my three-year-old daughter due to pain. Three days later, I went to a chiropractor.

My chiropractor had me move my shoulder around and did actual diagnosis of the injury, with X-rays, etc.

A) I passed the rotator cuff test and failed EVERYTHING ELSE.
B) he put me in a sling to ease discomfort after reseating my shoulder.
C) after several adjustments, the pain stopped, my shoulder stayed where it belonged, and I’ve never had any real trouble with it since.

BTW, that was over a decade ago. My daughter is 14 now, and I can pick her up, fairly easily, with no pain.

SOME chiropractors are not very good. Some DOCTORS are morons.

If you’re bent, go to a chiropractor. If you’re broken or ill, go to a doctor.

Mike Green has it relatively easy. Interesting. [Puck Prospectus]

Interesting article, but I cannot say I agree with this assessment:

why would you put Mike Green on for a defensive-zone faceoff when there are good odds an offensive rush is coming up and you can keep him fresh? Both Green’s and Campbell’s teams have used them successfully this season with spectacular results, but the fact remains they’re not trusted with the most dangerous tasks.

While the ratio of offensive zone starts to defensive zone starts is biased toward the offesnsive side, Green is no stranger to d-zone starts at all. Just take a look at the BtN data for zone starts. He takes a significant amount of defensive zone starts in comparison to the rest of the team. Green has the highest TOI/60 at even strength of any Caps player at 17.11 minutes, and with that high amount of time on the ice, he is going to get zone starts all over the rink. The zone starts of the player with the highest TOI are probably more reflective of how the team plays in general. Basically, Green’s zone starts are biased toward the offensive zone because the Caps are a good team and can sustain pressure in the offensive end of the rink. I find it hard to believe that Bruce is sitting Green for defensive zone starts to “keep him fresh.”

By the way, Chris Burton will love this:

The aforementioned biases show up in the list [of toughest jobs in the NHL]: only 1 of the top 19 players is from the Eastern Conference, and 6 of the top 25 are Nashville Predators!

I’m a little surprised Hamhuis isn’t on there because he played against the top competition for so long with Klein; who is on there. Either way, neat stuff. Legwand has long been too underrated defensively. Across a whole season, he’s probably a top 10 defensive center.

I don’t understand why Jerred Smithson isn’t on there, either, because he always plays with Ward and Legwand. It may be because Trotz puts Erat out for all the O-zone draws due to Smitty sucking eggs on offense.

Sure. Take a look here. They’ve gone ahead and “adjusted” some of the more subjective stats. Not sure their methodology is air-tight, but it certainly is good enough to give you a feel for it (at first glance, it looks like the Rangers, Kings and Stars are the biggest offenders, while they’re undercounting in Atlanta, Jersey and other places).

That list generally reinforces an idea I meant to bring up earlier – while you imply that home teams want to bump up their hit totals, I’ve heard anecdotally that there are arenas where the team encourages keeping those totals down so the players have less to bargain with at contract time. Not sure how much truth there is to it, but would it surprise you if Lou Lamoriello was one of those folks trying to keep totals low?

TOR has more goals than CALGARY?! I knew they were hurting for offense, but damn…even the Eastern Conference’s worst team is outscoring them.

BtN took a look at when you do your scoring, in terms of goal differential. In other words, are you scoring when it’s tied, you’re up one, down one, etc.

Toronto was piling up the goals while down two or three goals, if I remember correctly.

In other words, they were giving up a substantial lead, and then scoring some garbage goals.

I think it’s a little bit of an oversimplification to say that goals scored by a team down by two or three goals are garbage. They might not be able to come back every time, but if they stay in the game it’s still possible for a team to claw its way back.

The Caps have certainly been on both sides of this: coming back numerous times from three goals down either to end up winning (vs. Chicago or Florida to start the win streak) or being blown out after coming back (vs. TBL). They have also been dinged for allowing their fair share of easy goals that made things complicated closing out games. Just think back to the blown 3rd period leads that we had at the beginning of the season. or even as recently as against Dallas. Garbage goals or not, those were some tense games.

Piggybacking on that Knuble article for a second, Lisa Hillary said something on a radio phoner for one of the stations yesterday, and compared Knuble’s voice in the room to Fedorov’s, and while the latter helped the Russians’ play out and gave them a chance to play with their idol, the former seems to be having as effective an impact, but over much more of the room.

Dude can’t catch a break. Thoughts on the hit? Looks like the shoulder slipped the head first and then the rest of the hit was to Booth’s chest. Spacek’s arm was down the whole time.

Not to derail this thread, and this may have been covered in the game thread, but wasn’t Ovi’s contact with Legace last night “a … back-pressure or blind-side hit to an opponent where the head is … the principal point of contact”? Is he subject to supplemental discipline for it?

Obviously that would be a ridiculous interpretation of the rule, but it demonstrates your point on just how subjective it’s going to be.

For some strange reason, I’m optimistic that they won’t screw it up. I don’t really know why, but when I watched the videos they had on that reel of legal and illegal hits, I thought to myself, “ok, that’s pretty clear.”

I was watching the Carolina feed, their announcers had Cam Ward with them during a portion of the game, and they didn’t agree with the call on Ovi because Legace was out of the crease when it happened. They also didn’t think the too many men on the ice call was fair. CI only had the CAR feed available so I almost didn’t watch the game but I was pleasantly surprised with their announcers. They complimented the Caps all night, particularly Greenie and Varly.

I really care more about the play-by-play guy’s ability to call a game than the color analyst (who is usually a homer).

A good test is to see how a guy calls a terrific goal by an opponent. If there’s general enthusiasm, then I give the guy a little respect. If there’s none, it’s tough to listen to.

For the most part, they’re pretty good, solid announcers out there.

And then there’s Jack Edwards…

by RCheli on Mar 26, 2010 10:37 AM EDT up reply actions

The goal test is an interesting way to look at it. You know someone shouldn’t be announcing a hockey game when a beauty of a goal doesn’t get more than a “meh”.

I absolutely hate it when a play-by-play guy makes it sound like his mother just died when the opponent scores. My rule of thumb is I should have to wonder which team the announcer works for he announces a goal. If I can’t really tell, he’s good.

Well for your edification, it can get awfully confusing for the family if there are three living men with the same first name.

Typically what happens is the Sr. is known by the first name, Jr. is known by the middle name, and the third gets a nickname of some sort. Tripp is common in this instanc. Ten years ago I had a supervisor named Tripp and he too was a third.

And it can be even worse when you do it with women. My mother is named after two of her aunts so to keep everybody from being confused, her entire family calls her by her first and middle names.

Which usually only happens when somebody is in deep trouble…

What’s good about Joe B and Locker is that they have a good sense of when to be serious and when not to be. When it is an important moment, game, or situation they don’t fool around and get cute or make jokes. They do a very good job of keeping it professional.

But when the game is boring for whatever reason, they liven things up and dive right into their schitck. It can get annoying at times but that is a surefire way of knowing whether or it is a good game by the amount of schitck they do.

Prospects update:

Marcus Johansson and Farjestads play Game 5 today. They are tied with SAIK at two games each, so their series will go at least six and most likely seven games. Ice Warrior tells me they’ve switched goalies again.

Dmitry Kugryshev and the Remparts also play Game 5 tonight. They could close out the series and advance to Round 2 with a win tonight.

Cody’s season is of course done and he’s on his way to Hershey.

SDR and the Colts are playing the waiting game for their next round to start. The Ottawa 67’s could be the Colts’ next opponent, but they have to win one more game against Missisauga and it’s scheduled for Sunday.

Joel Broda and the Hitmen are behind, 2 games to Moose Jaw’s 3, but they could tie the series with a win on Saturday.

For two seasons now, I’ve been trying to keep my hockey expectations in check, but the Caps, they go and blow them out of the water. Last season, I said, ok, under Bruce in 07-08, they were on pace for 108 points, it would be nice to do that again, but that’s a lot of points, so cracking 100 would be a reasonable expectation. And then they hit 108 on the nose.

So this season, I’m telling myself, maybe maintaining 108 points level of play for a third season is a little much to ask for. Or maybe not, but let’s not start thinking the mid-110a is realistic. Except, today, the Caps have surpassed 108 to set yet another record and they can potentially collect 16 more points. And they’re on pace for 121 points.

So today I’ve decided to stop worry, to hell with reasonable expectations, and just sit back and enjoy. I might not ever see another historic season like this one. But, you know, just in case next year is even better (because that’s been the pattern), I’ll start this whole sit back and enjoy thing a heck of a lot sooner than the end of March!

Of the 88 twenty goal scorers so far....

Fehr has been on the ice for the least amount of even strength goals against. One less than Hossa and 5 less than Marco Sturm, who are 2nd and 3rd. (Knuble is 8th)

21 goals against for Fehr, same number of goals he has scored. Ridiculous.

Statistical Anomaly...

Did you know that the Caps now lead their division by more points than the other five division leaders combined?

The Caps presently have a 33 point lead on Atlanta, which is an insane margin. In the other divisions:

Atlantic: A tie between New Jersey and some other team, meaning the lead margin is 0.

Northeast: Buffalo has a solid 7 point lead over Ottawa.

Central: Chicago has an 8 point lead on Nashville

Northwest: Vancouver leads Colorado by 5

Pacific: San Jose now has a 2 point lead on Phoenix.

Total up the other divisions (let’s see… count that…carry the one…) and you get 22 points total for the five divisions.

Wow.

Eh. I don’t think anything about them says they’re a first-round exit team, but I don’t think it’s just bad luck, either. I think this is a case of a team simply not being as good as they were last year.

They’ve played more games than any one else in the last 3 seasons, they’ve lost some key depth guys, they still don’t have wingers for Sid AND Malkin at the same time, etc. I don’t know, they don’t have the same bite they did last year. Still tough, and I agree they’re still “the team to beat” if only in name…but yeah.

If they were going to flip the switch, they would have done so by now. First round exit? Maybe, maybe not. It depends on how well Elliot plays for Ottawa. If they end up drawing New Jersey in the second round, they might just luck out and get to the Conference Finals. Same for the Buffaslugs. Anybody else though and they could have some serious trouble.

But “team to beat”??? Eh, that’s a stretch IMHO.

their GAA is just stunning when comparing the top 10 teams vs. the middle 10. I knwo the Caps have this ability to really skew things, but the Pens are, on average, giving up 1.2 goals per game more to a top 10 team than a middle of the pack team. So then I decided to look at how the Pens scoring fares in comparison.

Had to pick my jaw up off the floor!

The Penguins score a mere 1.89 goals per game against the elite teams, but 3.56 against the middle 10! Those are some pretty huge disparities.

I’d love to see the Caps season broken down like that. Very interesting stuff.

Is that just “one of those years” or is it something else? The Devils didn’t play as much of a trap the last couple of years (under Sutter), so maybe the Pens just aren’t used to it.

Jersey’s had Pittsburgh’s number so far this season. I don’t think it’s the Pens can’t break through, it’s just they haven’t. Jersey’s been great at capitialzing any mistake and putting it in the net and then clamping down.

In all those games (And this is off the top of my head), for the most part NJ got a lead, usually and early lead, and then played masterful (boring) defense. It’s worked though, can’t knock it

Here’s the latest on the site from the other players.

Although there was no clear-cut choice, 22 percent named Flyers defenseman Chris Pronger. Another 10 percent fingered Ovechkin for his grabbing and hitting from behind. And 12 percent called out Ranger Sean Avery — some of them, grudgingly. “He’s probably happy to get my vote,” one Eastern Conference player admits.

1. Chris Pronger, Philadelphia Flyers: 22 percent
2. Sean Avery, New York Rangers: 12 percent
T3. Alex Ovechkin, Washington Capitals; Steve Ott, Dallas Stars: 10 percent
5. Jarkko Ruutu, Ottawa Senators: 8 percent
T6. Patrick Kaleta, Buffalo Sabres; Cam Janssen, St. Louis Blues: 6 percent
T8. 13 players: 2 percent

Nothing there that I can see. It’s a poll on the best fighter.

Derek Boogaard of the Wild is 6’8" and 257 pounds and has scored two goals in the past five seasons. But he’s mustered 500-plus penalty minutes over that span — and now he has 46 percent of our premier-pugilist vote. “There are a lot of tough guys, but Boogaard is the last one I want to mess with,” says one Western defenseman. The No. 2 recipient, though, doesn’t quite fit the profile. Rick Rypien (20 percent) goes 5’11", 190, is the cousin of former NFL QB Mark and once took a leave of absence because he was struggling mentally with the strain of fighting through injuries. Apparently, fighting other guys is less of a problem. “He has boxing skills, quick hands and protects himself well,” says a former first-round draft pick. “Pound-for-pound, he’s toughest in the NHL.”

BEST FIGHTER
1. Derek Boogaard, Minnesota Wild: 46 percent
2. Rick Rypien, Vancouver Canucks: 20 percent
3. Colton Orr, Toronto Maple Leafs: 10 percent
4. Wade Belak, Nashville Predators: 8 percent
5. Georges Laraque, formerly of the Montreal Canadiens: 4 percent
T6. Six players: 2 percent

When did enforcers become complete offensive and defensive wastes? I mean, I hate Marty McSorley, but he was a decent player (he scored 15 goals twice in his career) and Laraque averaged around 12-15 points a year in his career.

by RCheli on Mar 26, 2010 12:50 PM EDT up reply actions

I think it’s not so much that enforcers got worse, I think everyone else got so much better. The depth of talent is much greater than it was when McSorely was protecting Gretzky. Now the enforcers stick out because everyone else skates circles around them. They aren’t going to get 15 goals by just riding shotgun with a star.

From my vantage point here in St. Louis, I’d say that Cam Jannsen is a massive waste. He roams the ice with froth at the mouth just looking for someone to hit. I’m sure he can play, or he wouldn’t have made it this far, but he contributes nothing to the Blues success.

Turns out there’s a whole poll feature in ESPN Magazine coming up. Looks like all the results are dues protected, but there are teasers. For example, best player:

This was a two-person race — reigning MVP Alex Ovechkin vs. Pens star Sidney Crosby — but not a particularly close one. Of those who picked one or the other, 73 percent chose Ovi. “He’s powerful, skilled and exciting to watch — just what our game needs,” says one Eastern Conference player. On the other hand, 15 guys got votes for most overrated, led by Canucks goalie Roberto Luongo (6 percent).

I just got the Magazine at work and read the article. It’s pretty interesting. 26% say Kerry Fraser is the top ref. 20% say Stephane Auger is the worst. And for all the VC ice haters – 24% say the Panthers have the worst surface while Edmonton got 28% of the vote for best ice, edging out Montreal who garnered 24% of the vote.

16% of voters said the Caps would win the Cup. 16% also said the Sharks. The overall favorite? Chicago with 32%.

Another question involved teammates taking PEDs. 4% think they might have teammates on PEDs. 12% abstained from saying no, and 76% said no. 8% say yes.
My favorite question? Who has the worst fans. Philly got 42% of the vote.

Sad story

STANSTEAD, Quebec — A thin and frail Pat Burns said he’s honored to have an arena named after him, even as he conceded he likely won’t live to see it completed.

Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper attended an announcement Friday that the Pat Burns Arena will be built in Stanstead, a town near the Quebec-Vermont border. The former NHL coach, his voice left raspy by the cancer attacking his lungs, flew up from his home in Florida for the ceremony.

Burns was forced to leave coaching in 2004 because of colon cancer. When he was diagnosed with lung cancer last year, he opted against treatment.

“I know my life is nearing the end and I accept that,” he told a few dozen invited guests at Stanstead College. “I probably won’t be here when [the arena] is finished, but I’ll be looking down on it.”

I don’t think there’s ever been a coach more entertaining than Burns was, especially when he would lose his mind behind the bench. The only one that came close was Demers.

Apparently not.

On 28 August 2009, CBC Radio One reported that Mr. Demers was chosen to fill the Senate seat of Lise Bacon by P.M. Harper. While Demers is a fluent bilingual, according to the report, Mr. Demers has “raised awareness about literacy issues”" by “going public with his own struggles.” A series of Montreal residents were interviewed regarding the appointment and were generally positive about the move. Many, however, noted that it was “important that he learn to read.”4

But really, if Canadian politicians are anything like their American counterparts they aren’t reading anything they vote on anyway so it’s not nearly as important a skill as being able to grandstand in two languages.

Kevin Smith spoke to nhl.com about his beloved Devils and hockey in general. He had this to say about the Caps:

Washington is hungry, Washington wants it desperately, and Washington comes into a series with the Devils saying you’ve had it, it’s our time. And you’ve got one of the greatest players in the League (Alex Ovechkin) in your arsenal….Maybe Washington has a little more blood-lust in their eye about the whole thing.

funny, I was just saying a Caps-Pens game is like a party, mixed with a healthy dose of blood-lust.

President's Trophy

Probably already been said but

There’s 8 points of difference between the Caps, Chicago and a Presidents trophy. Of all the teams still left Chicago has the highest points possible, 117. The Caps, currently at 109, need 8 points through wins or chicago losses to clinch.

Watching the Hawks schedule this could be locked by the end of the week. Their next 3 games: CBJ, Blues, Wild. Their L10 isn’t spectacular at 4-4-2. Caps don’t have a particularly easy road ahead however with Calgary Ottawa and then Atlanta. Ottawa ended the team’s 14 game win streak, and the last time the Caps played Calgary was back in Oct of 2008. The caps lost 2 – 1. Also the last time these two teams played Nylander was still…ya know…actually playing for the Caps. I predict the Caps go 2-0-1, Chicago 1-2-0. And there’s our 8 points.

Nothing.

Since ‘85, 7 President’s Trophy winners have also won the Cup, while another 2 went to the finals and lost.

Four have lost in the first round, 5 in the second round, and 5 lost in the third round.

This, to me, says that this trophy really does represent the best team in the league.

by RCheli on Mar 26, 2010 4:48 PM EDT up reply actions

No it indicates which team can play at a high level the longest. You come to play 90% of the nights you’ll win more than a team that only plays hard 50% of the time. Playoffs are a crazy batching of tournament duals. Its not like Mortal Combat where its a tournament of you vs everyone else and you have to beat 18 guys, where clearly you are the best for beating each and every person.

According to your numbers though Trophy winners have made it to the cup 40% of the time. Seems like a pretty decent rate. Most teams in most leagues, the top team throughout the season tends to go far in the playoffs. Pretty safe assumption and if anything for this team, winning the Presidents for best in the regular season and not at least getting to the Cup will be a huge failure to them because of their expectations of themselves.

It also gives a great overview of the team. After blowing up the team in the early 2000s then rebuilding all the way through with multiple players and personnel working their way up from the minors, takes them 7 years, 6 if you discount the strike year. To go from last to first in around 6 seasons in a league with a salary cap is hard business.

Nothing.

It’s not that unlikely that either Ottawa or Montreal fall out of it. I don’t think it will happen — but it could.

by RCheli on Mar 26, 2010 5:32 PM EDT up reply actions

No way. The only question left to resolve in the East is whether Boston can hang on to the 8th seed. And the ansewr there is “very likely they do”.

Montreal and Ottawa re in.

I think the other question is if Philly can hang on. Boston’s got a game in hand on them, 2 points behind. Not out of question Philly falls.

Remember this tweet from Nate?

Good for Carly. American Heroes don’t deface flags.
5:53 AM Mar 23rd via TweetDeck in reply to chitsweire

Well, get this, from nhl.com:

The Clawson, Mich., native also hand-delivered an American flag signed by all 23 members of the U.S. Olympic Team to United States Marines from Camp Lejeune. Gleason, who has been sidelined the last week with a foot injury, presented the gift to Lt. Col. John McDonough of the 2nd Battalion, 2nd Marines Regiment in a suite at the RBC Center during Carolina’s game with the Washington Capitals on March 18.

So it’s not defacing the flag?

The definition of defacing the flag has never been nailed down. For now, I think it’s a personal interpretation.

This, in my opinion, is a far different gesture than the random signing of an American flag for an autograph-seeker. This doesn’t bother me in the least.

by Cluster on Mar 26, 2010 8:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Obviously it didn’t bother the serviceman, but it just doesn’t sit right with me.
