Actually it was only a little bit of WTF, followed quickly by the recollection that Knuble kills the Penguins. He is their boogieman.

First of all— when we’re in the playoffs and I’m home visiting my family in Tacoma, I hope there’s a Seattle Caps Fan meetup! I’d love to go. Second, and more on topic… BB’s decision to have Knuble shoot in my opinion highlights what a fantastic coach he is.
He’s just got a knack for picking the right guy… love that he chooses not only based on pure skill but also with an eye to a “you know, no one knows how he does it but that Knuble just knows how to score on MAF. Put him in.”
I’m learning more and more the power of good coaching this season, I think… especially in the light of watching how poorly coached that Russian Olympic team was.

I was also pleasantly shocked that he picked Knubes, but as for Bruce’s “gut feelings…” We’re still not very good in the shootout (5 – 4), our shooting % in the shootouts is 21st in the league, and Bruce still goes to Ovie every time, despite the fact that he’s not very good at it.
Sometimes, I wish he’d get a “gut feeling” to go with someone other than Ovie in the top-3 shooters.
There's a fine line between arrogance and ignorance and only I manage to erase that line.

I feel like the past few months Ovechkin has been pretty above average in the shootout. Maybe he is finding his groove in that area finally.
I look to the future because that's where I'm going to spend the rest of my life.
I’ve noticed that he, Semin and Nicky have been practicing one-on-ones in pregame when almost everyone has left the ice. It’s usually against the goalie not starting that night. He did it last night and didn’t get anything past Varly.

Just a couple questions…
1. Where do the Pens fans blog it out?
2. Doesn’t it seem it hurt Crosby to do the post-game interviews after this loss?

Last night was a little crazy.
Check out Pensburg (link above in clips) if you want to read a Pens blog but it is pretty sickening. Whoever wrote their blog last night went on and on about how the Pens were the better team. Whatever. Kudos to Fehr and Balanced for pointing out the flaws in their argument. Any Pens fan that did that here would be chased out in seconds.
I didn’t see the game last night; did Chimmer (aka Hands of Stone) play on the second line? Chimera looks great on every line until he gets close to the net. I think last night he decided not to shoot (since that rarely leads to anything good) and started passing off to no one in particular. He earns great chances but the dude just can’t put it away.
I think that the Pens were the better team through 65 minutes last night, but Theodore was the better goalie and the Caps scored timely goals.
That happens all the time in the NHL where the team that plays better doesn’t get the win.
The friendly confines were a key last night. Home ice was HUGE.
Now helping to keep an eye on all things Gr8 at Alex Ovetjkin.
I disagree with that assertion, unless we’re talking firast period. After that, both teams got chances, but the Caps were a lot more threatening through most of the second and the beginning of the third.
Theo was the better goalie tonight, but I’m grading that game as even through the hockey portion of the nights festivities. Carlson especially was spurring chances and skating out of the forecheck.

For clarification, I think Pensburgh is a great blog and I’m personal friends with Hooks Orpik so I’ve got nothing bad to say about them. I also don’t think it’s ridiculous to suggest that PIT was the better team for significant stretches last night. I definitely didn’t come away from that game thinking “we got this.”

I think the most important need for this team going in to FA is another center. Against a team like Pittsburgh, its a MASSIVE weakness to have Backstrom and pretty much nothing else.

Koivu might be affordable but Marleau is not unless we move Semin. I’d be totally in favor of that.

If there were actually an upgrade to Semin on the PK, its Marleau. He could do well with a change of scenery; I’m not sure how SJS can hold on to him, Seto, Pavs, etc. They’ve got a serious problem on their hands with those three all up.

I don’t know why it has to be by free agency. The Caps have one of the top 5 systems in the league, and an excess of NHL-ready goaltending. Trade a Neuvirth or a Johannsen and get a guy.
No need to move Johansson since he plays C and he might be a future piece, but I’d agree about one of the goalies and maybe one of the lower guys in the prospect pool.

Yeah, but he’s a ways away — the Caps need to win NOW. Who knows how long they’ll be able to keep their core together.
I mean, in 2011-12, they won’t be able to afford all of Ovechkin, Semin, Backstrom, Laich, and Green. They have this core this year and next.
Who’s out there on the trade market that we’d even want? I mean, I can think of this one guy in Dallas with a ridiculous contract, and I know they’re looking to get rid of him, but I don’t want the Caps’ second line to be Brooks Laich and the Diving Team.

Well, right now, a number of commentators agree that Dallas will be looking to move Mike Ribeiro because he makes a lot of money and ownership there is looking to cut payroll. Anaheim may trade Bobby Ryan (who is, yes, a right wing) if they can’t resign him, as he’s an RFA at the end of the year. St. Louis might want to move Brad Boyes since he’s not terribly useful as a wing and they have more than enough scoring centers in the lineup right now.
Or just rosterbate. Who would you like to see down the middle?

Not a ton but I love his physical package and he definitely has the skill. He hasn’t gotten a ton of opportunity in STL but I assumed that was because he’s behind Oshie, Backes, McDonald on the depth chart.

Well, Oshie plays RW and Backes definitely can play all 3 F positions, so I don’t know that its the depth chart. McDonald isn’t that good anymore, either.

McDonald is as good as he needs to be! And he’s extended and won’t be benched. I’m pretty sure they use Backes at C. Oshie is a natural C but plays W sometimes. Boyes is a W/C that always plays W. I think Berglund plays W sometimes too. They’ve got so many Cs but not enough scoring wings. Makes sense to me…

Like F&B I haven’t seen him a ton, but has great size and reach. And from what I can tell excellent vision. And he isn’t yet 22. I am confident in my like for him.

I think Semin is gone but you also underestimate the ability of the Caps to stay together going forward. Carlson and Alzner are cheap, Schultz won’t get a huge raise, Poti and Theo come off the books soon. GMGM is set up to keep this team competitive for a long time. They don’t need to go all in now. If they lock up the D and Backstrom and AO they’ll be fine. Then they’ll need cheap guys who can contribute while RFA. Guys like Johansson. Selling soon-to-be cheap contributors for one or two chances right now makes no sense.

Couldn’t agree more. Anyone who thought the Caps dominated that one start-to-finish (or even for most of the night) was watching a different game than I was.

Agreed. I think PIT might beat NJD for the ATL but they’ll need to play better. I also hope that BUF gets upset in the first round so that NJD/PIT have to play in the second round. Eliminate either Brodeur or the Pens. That works for me.

I think there’s a difference; Tampa is a year or so away, and Carolina’s been a mess this year (though Bruce will presumably warn them about it tonight), whereas Boston/Atlanta are trying to get into the 8 spot. Compared to the last ten last year, this is some nice luck.

Kind of odd scheduling.
I think the schedule makers got lazy this year and didn’t even try to make it logical. Kind of like in NHL09 when you’d advance to the next season and suddenly you have like 25 straight home games followed by a 3 month road trip.

Brett Leonhart (sp?) one of the Caps front-office staff who was a goalie in college and last year, due to some injuries and crazy scheduling, was signed for a 1-day contract and was the backup goalie (didn’t get to play though) for a game.
A 1-game contract. Wow, that is kind of awesome. Great story to tell his grand kids.

I am definitely worried. The last two games with Carolina, a team which really sucks, both went into OT. We should not be going into OT with the 27th place team in the league. They always play us well.

Yes, it was the infamous Chris Clark trade day when the whole team came out flat. Dec. 28 I think (or thereabouts). The whole building had the air taken out of it by that trade. We were down 3-0 after the 1st period and Theo (and everyone else) played terrible.
Ah that is right. I can’t imagine how much it sucks to get to the game and learn your captain has been traded.

Eric Staal had a 5-point game that night. Brooks gamely gave the requisite “you don’t lose because your locker mate and doppelganger got traded” quote after the game, but he was lying. The whole team was in shock.

Right. The biggest issue for the Caps is staying healthy in this game, which the Caps probably sleepwalk through.
I don’t care about the latter, but I am intensely interested in the former.

By my after-all-nighter calculations (done in my head) are correct, if the Caps beat the Canes tonight, the best any other team can do (meaning buffalo and jersey) is tie the caps in the EC. As it will give the Caps 110 points with 8 remaining, and even if the other two win they will be at 92 and only 18 possible points left. And in order for them to get that tie, the Caps would have to lose everyone of the rest of their games, and they would have to win all of them. Looking good. If either time loses even in OT, they are out of the running.

Hmm, so I am still sick of studying so I went ahead and did some of the worse-case-scenario math for the Presidents trophy. Chicago, San Jose, Phoenix, and Vancouver are still in the running. Chicago is in second with 99 points. That leaves them with the ability to get 20 more points, giving them the possibility of 119 points. If the Hawks were to win the rest of their games, the Caps would have to win 6 of their remaining 9 . Best case scenario with the Hawks is the Caps could knock them out in 6 games.
They could knock San Jose (maximum of 116 points) out in as few as 6 games, phoenix (maximum of 114) in as few as 4, and Vancouver (maximum of 110) in as few as 2. That is, of course, best scenario as in the Caps win theirs and the other teams lose.
I didn’t go through and look at the schedule, and look at the exact number of games based on who plays when, so I am not sure the fastest date that any of it could happen. I can’t promise there is not a major flaw in my logic anywhere in here. Also the number of games is total needed to be played, just just by the Caps.
This means, that in best case scenario theory, the caps need to win just the next 3 games to clinch early.
I am gonna feel like an idiot if that is all wrong.

Good heavens were the Sedins awesome last night.
Especially Daniel’s recreation of the “floater” from “Rookie of the Year”
There was another play in that game where Henrik stole the puck behind the net, threw it out front, where it was redirected by a whirling spin pass by Daniel, right to Burrows at the other end of the net for a tap in. Plus Hordichuk fought George Parros about a hundred times. Good stuff.

Mitch Richmond, Washington Wizards version, had some shake but no bake. He classic move was a head bobble then launching a 3 pointer which usually clanged off of the rim and bounced off of Isaac Austin’s head out of bounds.

That was a game where I would have been entirely satisfied if the game had ended tied after OT. Both teams played great, hard fought games and if it’s not going to be decided by a real hockey play, then both teams should have been allowed to congratulate their goalie and leave the ice feeling good about their performance. It was great to see Knuble get the SO winner, but it’s just inherently wrong for one team to feel like losers because of a skills competition
But shouldn’t the Penguins at least feel like half-winners? Go FlyerZ!1
But yeah, I detest shootouts and last night was no exception.

Caps prospect update: The Barrie Colts won their fourth game against the Sudbury Wolves last night to become the first team in the OHL to advance to the second round of the playoffs. Their next opponent hasn’t been determined yet (and I need to go look at the brackets.)

Is Delly playing well? He only had 1 point in four games. Sudbury lost Staal to suspension for most of the series and it took the wind out of them.
About SDR’s offense – his final regular season stats were 18-23-41, plus-19, 125 PIM in 57 games. Very solid, and with two more goals he would have been the Colts’ seventh 20-goal scorer. The plus-19 should give you a hint that he does other good things with his play, creating time and space for his linemates to do their thing.
Staal was not lost to suspension until the game last night. He was definitely in Game One when he went minus-5 in an 11-4 loss.
The Wolves never really had a chance. The Colts really are that good.

Understand all that about Delly’s reputation. I think he’s a fantastic player. Just wondered if anyone saw any of the games and knows if he played well. I did not see any. Given the wide goal differential in the series (25-10) I would have expected him to have more than 1 point and a net +/- of zero.

On several occasions he did very nicely corralling the puck deep in the defensive zone, making a little move to get space and an angle, and starting a controlled breakout. That brought a smile to my face.
The play to set up the Fehr goal was nice in many respects – good skating, strong on the puck, and a nice soft pass into Green’s wheelhouse.

Definitely thought it was Belanger’s best and I agree that Green had a great game. He was using his skating and body position to win loose pucks all night and wasn’t really gambling in his own end.

Is it just me or does it seem like every year it always takes around 10 more points to get that 8th spot in the western conference than the east?
The West is tough, there is no doubt about it. But its a cyclical thing.
Speaking of conference battles, the East looks all sorts of crazy.
Could see BUF @ #2 and PIT and NJ getting 3 and 4. It looks nuts.

The west has been better for years now, but with all the young talent out East and the strong teams out west getting older I think the tides might be turning. (Then again, COL, PHX, CHI, LAK are all stocked with young talent so they aren’t going anywhere.)

Semin usually gets put in close to the end of the PK, a perfect amount of time and role for him in the PK.
4th Floor, is next, swimvare, undervare, Eric Fehr...
I like him there too for many reasons. First off if Bad Sasha comes out then it’s a much shorter 5 on 3. Second the other team is usually tired by that point, making any moves/breakaways that much easier for him. Third, he can usually finish off the PK and still have enough for a full shift after that.
I have to admit, when I saw him out there I laughed and said “Semin on the PK, are they joking?”. Two seconds later he scored and the guy in front of me was like “who’s laughing now, bitch?”.

Stupid question time, now. I finally looked at the game summary. Semin picked off the pass from Crosby, right? Yet, he wasn’t on the ice when the goal was scored. So, he coughs up the puck and then goes to the bench? I understand he was at the end of his shift and had been on for the power play, but to then give up on the play? Not like he was going to catch Sasha anyway…..

Well, you see it all the time where players will go for a change not so much because they’re tired or at the end of their shift but because their replacement that is on the bench is already closer to the puck carrier.

Well, Crosby tries to saucer it across, Semin picks it off, and starts to stroll up the ice. With two D back and 150 feet of ice to cover, I’d have felt comfortable going for a change, too.
That was an epic brain cramp by the D there.

No excuses for the Pens D, but Crosby has to be faulted to not even trying to get back into the play when the puck-carrier is one of the league’s best snipers. IMO. We’d never be hearing the end of it if Ovechkin didn’t try to backcheck in a similar situation.
We wouldn’t hear anything because Ovechkin would have been charging down the ice. Probably would have caught the guy, too.

And yeah, PAYD usually contributes civilly, so I was a little surprised by that. Maybe he needs to choose his words better, and I’d have seen the joke.

I know. When I started on Pensburgh, I didn’t know there were all these other team blogs out there. Maybe I’d have picked something different, but it has kind of grown on me, so it’s here to stay. To me it’s a question of being accountable and responsible. If I make a config change that completely breaks the core routing, do I leave it to one of my teammates to fix and go get lunch? HELL NO. You break it, you stay till it’s fixed or you can’t do anything else.

He is an excellent PK-er. I also think that opposing PPs are forced to concentrate on Semin when he’s on the ice. I haven’t watched for it, but I imagine that the point men are much more reluctant to pinch in and much quicker to back off to neutral ice in order to ward against a Semin breakaway. Last night, Letang was a little too eager to back off…

Letang is so much worse defensively than Green, but since he’s not as good offensively either people never call him out for it. Weird results right there.

He can skate and play with the puck but he gives the puck up plenty and isn’t exactly a genius with his positioning in his own zone. He’s getting a lot of love at Pensburgh for shutting down AO but I’m not convinced. Two trips were missed and AO had a couple good chances that he blew wide. AO not scoring was more luck than Letang.

yeah, shame on OV for diving with that stick between his legs.
look, the penalties were 5-1 against. one of those was an automatic for poti throwing the puck over the glass and another was sasha’s high stick. beside that the first half of the game was called pretty consist on both sides. seems like the only calls they were willin got make were ones where there was a scoring opportunity. and i dont have a problem with that. seems we are so conditioned to calls on every little trip and slash that its an issue when they dont get called.
however, clearly there were inconsistencies in the later part of the game that were obvious. flash interfered on the PP and flash’s second tripping call and the ov trip in the third. unfortunately this leads to more and more fuel to the conspiracy fire.
i thought the linesman had a much worse game, which is unusual. some phantom icing calls and late icing wave offs that were odd. seems like the two linesman were not on the same page.

There were definitely several trips committed by Pens that could have been called. Similar trips were called against the Caps. I don’t feel it was an consistently officiated game by any stretch of the imagination.
Because now I can justify browsing and commenting during the work day with the argument that I am promoting my business.

It was a “well called” game up until the Fleischmann trip was called in the second period (which the Penguin Scum scored on).
After that it was flashbacks to last May where Pittsburgh was allowed to do whatever they wanted and we had to really watch ourselves.
The one that ticked me off the most though was the blatent moving pick at our blueline in the third period.

I’m guilty. We had a guy with a Malkin jersey randomly standing up in the middle of PPs, and no one was saying anything, so I yelled “Sit Down Asshole!” when it was fairly quiet. That was my moment of weakness. Although everyone was pretty appreciative.

Yeah, they do. One problem there in the 400’s is that the rails are too high. If you sit on the rail and lean back in your seat, the metal rails obscure about a third of the ice. This is how the leaning starts.

It’s because of the angle of their camera. I swear, they literally perch that sucker on top of some dude’s head at the top of the bottom bowl. If a pygmy gets up to get a drink in the middle of the play you miss about 15 seconds of game time.

We obviously are not as good as PIT down the middle.
But the Pens W’s are pretty weak. Where would Bill Guerin be playing on the Caps? or Poni? Kunitz? DuPuis?

The Caps will have the #1 seed in the East locked up and no other team will have yet offiically qualified for the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
On a side note, should Atlanta lose in regulation, Pittsburgh will clinch. A New Jersey win and any Atlanta loss gets the Devils in. A Calgary loss in regulation or a Chicago win clinches a spot for the Blackhawks.

Winning the Stanley Cup has earned Marc-Andre Fleury a certain measure of respect, but his inconsistent play this season with declining numbers in February and March makes him a bit of question mark for a team intent on defending their Stanley Cup. Well, my two are different from writer’s top 2 (Ovechkin and Crosby). I think Miller and Bryzgalov have been more important for their teams than Crosby, Ovechkin, and Sedin. Though it’s reasonable to argue for any of those 5, and all of them are deserving.
Judging by what I’ve read from various media sources,, I think the three finalists will end up being Ovechkin, Crosby, and Miller.
I have to go. But if I find one single dog hair when I get back, I'll rub... sand... in your dead little eyes. I also need you to buy sand. I don't know if they grade it, but... coarse.

Does Gaborik deserve a look? I mean.. he’s the whole team. He hasn’t been enough to get them into the playoffs, but there’s nothing going on outside of him and Lundqvist on that squad.

orpik vs. backstrom
I didn’t see anyone talking about this so far, but bennanati on the telecast said orpik blew up backstrom at center ice, but all I saw was orpik fly backwards and backstrom kept on skating…it was sweet.
If I’m remembering the right play, and I’m pretty sure I am, I think it was that Orpik hit someone else, and had Backstrom lined up. Obviously Orpik didn’t really get what he was hoping for with the Backstrom hit.

One thing I noticed last night that made me very happy was several times during a scrum behind the Caps net, Carlson emerged with the puck, under control, and made a good play. Like to see our kids play smart, not panicked hockey. Now, did I just miss something awful, or did he overall play a good game? Seemed like it to me, but I was watching it on DVR and admit that I fast forwarded through a few parts of it (namely what seemed to be endless Pens PPs – although I certainly stopped,re-wound and watched a certain one many times…).
He finally looks comfortable. He pinched in without getting caught all night. It was good.

Ed Frankovic interviewed Carlson after the game and asked him specifically about using his Hershey experience (playing against the baby Pens) to the team’s advantage. Well worth your time, but Ed’s gamers always are.

And the goal they scored was just a semi-busted play that Sid’s skill level turned into a scoring chance. 99% of the players that have played in the NHL end up with that puck skittering away behind the net or they have to slow down to corral it and get checked before they can do anything. Corvo also badly misplayed that. He turned and skated toward Crosby and left Guerin all alone in front of the net. Dumb, dumb play.

I thought Corvo was anticipating the puck going below the goal line, Schultz (Poti?) going after it, and having to rotate to teh near post to cover the slot. He froze and got caught in no-man’s land with Sid’s soccer exhibition. I don’t particularly fault him on that play.

He made the right play there — you’re not going to expect anyone, not even Crosby to recover the puck when it is bouncing away from him like that.
No reason for him to give up his position there. Crosby made a ridiculous recovery and then a pass that made even me grin like a moron. Corvo still almost managed to block the shot. He looked fine there. Other parts of the game? Not so good. Like a lost child at times. He still needs time to get used to playing with Teapot.

Sorry, I don’t agree – it’s essentially a 2-1 at that point. Let Theo worry about Crosby taking a circus shot from behind the net and tie up Guerin’s stick. That leaves Crosby with several options:
1. Try a circus shot;
2. Force the puck to Guerin; and
3. Take the puck behind the net and set up shop.
In none of those situations is Corvo better off following the puck instead of covering his man.
Of course, the 2-1 wouldn’t have happened if Poti hadn’t tried to double-team Ponikarovsky at the half-boards, leaving Corvo to cover both Guerin and Crosby by himself.

You misunderstand me. I think Corvo was anticipating a loose puck below the goal line, which his defensive partner would proceed to chase down. In that instance, Corvo’s job is to rotate to the near post to control any pass into/across the slot.

Watch the play again. Poti was up at the half boards to Corvo’s left. He knew he had no backside help. Why would he go down “anticipating a loose puck” when Crosby had full possession?

The lower half of the east is shuffling, too. In both conferences, it’s pretty clear who’s made the dance and who hasn’t. One team in each conference might conceivably change, but that’s it, and it’s not particularly likely. This last couple weeks of the regular season will be more about figuring out who your team’s dance partner is.

Good Signs
After reading Hooks’ recap, you’d think that the Pens dominated this game everywhere but the scoresheet. . . that this was a replay of games one and two from last year’s playoff series. Allow me to respectfully disagree.
During last year’s playoff series, the Pens’ forechecking pressure forced our defensemen into turnover after turnover leading to obscene amounts of offensive zone time for the Pens and huge volumes of 5v5 shots against Varly. With the exception of maybe one or two brief instances (the Talbot goal being one), that scenario didn’t play out last night – when the Caps got the puck in their own end, they quickly got it out, and usually with possession. I simply cannot think of any time last night where, for two or more consecutive shifts, the Penguins hemmed us in our own end by landing checks on defensemen and forcing turnovers.
To those who would cite the disparity in shots on goal, while the Pens out-shot the Caps by 10 overall, they needed a 9-1 advantage in power play shots to get there. Furthermore, playing for so long shorthanded disrupted the flow of the game for the Caps.
With the addition of Corvo, the emergence of Carlson and the continued development of Schultz, this simply isn’t the same Caps team as last year. Heck, it’s not even the same Caps team that looked so befuddled by the Red Wings’ forechecking pressure back on January 19th. The notion that the Pens (or any team, for that matter) can simply pour the pressure on Mike Green until he cracks then take advantage of the ensuing chaos, is no longer valid.
Even if the Caps had lost last night, I still would have left the building with an overall sense of positive progress because the Caps deftly parried thrusts by their fiercest rival directed toward their two biggest vulnerabilities, forechecking pressure and penalty killing.

One thing I noticed about this – I don’t think that was entirely good on the Caps D, though some of it certainly is. I think part of that has to do with the Pens. They tried to land a lot of checks on us, though not as many as last year, and they bounced off more often than they made it stick. Mind you, this is entirely visual from what I saw, but it looked to me like the Caps won the physical battle.

The number of checks attempted or landed is less important than what the Caps’ D did with the puck in their own end. They didn’t freak out and turn it over or repeatedly dump it to the neutral zone. They patiently worked it out or ate the puck along the boards as necessary until support arrived. Partly, this ought to be attributed to not having Erskine in the lineup.

How else was I supposed to interpret this? I was disagreeing with the notion that the Pens could have affected the outcome either way, whereas your comment suggests that the Pens simply weren’t landing their checks effectively. Players who lack confidence with the puck tend to panic under pressure, which leads to turnovers or dump-outs to neutral ice. The Caps have purged their top-6 of most of the guys who panic with the puck, and the remainder have improved their game.
My point was that, at least based on last night’s game, it doesn’t matter how well the Pens execute their “forecheck → wear the Caps down → turnovers → goals → win” gameplan, because that gameplan won’t work against this edition of the Caps. There was nothing personal in what I wrote, I was simply disagreeing with your view of the matter. If you disagree with what I say, then that’s cool, too.

Enh. I’m sorry if this came across unclear to you. I had intended it to mean “this is true, and here’s a little more.” I’m sorry you took it the wrong way. You’re absolutely right that it doesn’t work against this edition of the Caps. Of course, Jeff Schultz was out for that series, and he’s improved a ton, so we’ll never know which is the case with him, but I also think that the Pens are less physical than they were last year.

That wasn’t a fierce forecheck. It was terrible miscommunication. Theo should have just covered that puck but he tried to play it, D wasn’t in a good spot so he dumped it up the boards, and Orpik throws it back at the net. Just a stupid play. Theo was great so I’m not dumping on him for that, but when you have one of the best faceoff teams in the league and a D corps that is known to get scrambly (especially against PIT) Theo needs to slow the game down and cover that puck every chance he gets.

After reading Hooks’ recap, you’d think that the Pens dominated this game everywhere but the scoresheet. . . that this was a replay of games one and two from last year’s playoff series. Allow me to respectfully disagree
Maybe I over-sold it. It was an even game, but I was impressed to see the Penguins look so good without Malkin. They looked terrible vs. Detroit without Malkin, so I was expecting the worst when that game, to me, looked a lot like the Pens/Caps playoff series. Very intense, very even, very exciting.

I thought it was more even than the playoff series, to be honest. I wasn’t happy to see how well PIT played without Malkin, but there is still a lot of skill and heart on that team and you knew they’d come out fighting against the Caps (though you could say the same about DET).

Monday night, Detroit came out fighting to stay alive int he playoffs, and Pittsburgh came out fighting to remain #2 in the East and #1 in the Atlantic. Last night, both teams had pride on the line, but Pittsburgh remains in the fight, while Washington is on cruise control. I thought that was pretty apparent.

I don’t buy that. The Pens needed the 2 points vs. Detroit just as badly as the needed the two points vs. Washington (neither of whom it will matter where they finish in the reg season). The Pens need to out-race NJD/Buff to stay in the 2 spot.
And as someone who watched about 75% of the Caps game, they were inspired and matched the intensity. As Peerless pointed out, Flash had 3 hits. I don’t think the Caps were cruising….True that they didn’t really NEED to put the pedal to the medal (so perhaps they didn’t) but I think the effort they expended was more than just your average game.

Right, the Pens needed tow points from each game. They came out hard in both. Detroit just came out harder on Monday (gotta think they’re the more desperate team).
I wouldn’t call the Caps lackadaisical, and like I said, pride was on the line, but what were they really fighting for last night? Unlike the Penguins, who were fighting not just for pride, but for two points because they’re in a tight race with New Jersey. Certainly, the Caps kicked it up a notch, but I don’t think they played at 110%, either. They didn’t play at that same level we saw in the first meeting.

And Jay McKee isn’t trusted (why is beyond me), he only played 10 minutes, so without Gonchar it was basically like they self-imposed 5 defensemen.
So without arguably the #2 and #3 most skilled and important skaters, I was worried the game would go differently.

As I mention in some comments below, I think the Pens came out with intensity last night and worked hard to establish a forecheck, so in that I think your recap is accurate. I just don’t think that strategy worked as well against the Caps last night because our defensive corps has improved a great deal. Last year during the playoffs with you guys, it seemed like we could never get out of our own zone, and when we did, it was almost never with possession. I didn’t really see the Caps’ defense panic under the pressure the way we did last year and the way that we were prone to earlier this season.

Mercenary? I don’t know if that’s accurate. He played most of his career in ANA then went to COL to try to win then took his turns in NSH and STL but I don’t see him as a mercenary.

Nashville just doesn’t retain star players for too long. The system you guys seem to have is focused on getting the young players in the system developed, turned into solid players, and if they cost too much, shipped out for more young talent. It actually works remarkably well.

Well, you’re right, it does work (Timonen, Hartnell, Upshall), but at some point it is going to bite us in the ass. If for some god-awful reason we can’t keep Weber and/or Suter (to a lesser extent Hornqvist) then we’re in deep shit for a long time.

The skull is on the shoulders of our 3rds (my avatar).
What it sounds like to me is that we dump the current homes, and change the roadies to be a white version of the current 3rds. This I’m wary of because the roads are so awesome. I also don’t like completely taking away bright colors and making everything steel/navy/black/gray.

There are probably games you’d like to remove and replace (we struggled with putting in the March 20, 1987 game against the Penguins, for example, one won by the Caps 4-3, but perhaps best remembered as the night Bob Gould one-punched Mario Lemieux into happyland), but here is a start.
I figured people would be interested to see this altercation, Gould Old Days in particular, so here is the fight on youtube. It starts 35 seconds in and only lasts a couple seconds, but it is well worth it to see Lemieux getting helped off the ice with a broken jaw. (As always on youtube, don’t bother reading the comments.)

He’s already been quoted as saying he saw Ovechkin coming. That doesn’t absolve Ovi and it doesn’t necessarily lay any blame on Campbell, but it certainly removes the “he tried to hurt me” element of it.

Big Time Sell. He’s one of the fastest players in the game. If he had wanted to put on the jets he could have made it so AO couldn’t even get close. He lets up at the end. It is a little bit but he’s so big and powerful that he still covers a ton of ice. He just doesn’t have that perfect naturally graceful stride. I don’t know that AO does any one skill the best in the league. He’s not the best stick handler, skater, shooter. But his complete package is the best, and he’s definitely the best goal scorer.

His skating reminds me a little of Weber, its not pretty like Suter’s, but it gets the job done in a hurry.

He’s got what track guys call “great turnover” – meaning he picks ‘em up and puts ’em down in quick succession. He’s got kind of a churning skating motion, you’re right, but his turnover is so high that he generates good speed off of it. It also means he doesn’t need much space to get up to full speed, he can change directions quickly. Combine it with the strength, heavy shot, and a nose for the puck, and he’s something else…

I guess. I only wear my Caps jersey to Caps game or out on the town. I have two Yotes jeresys that I wear to Yotes games.
I certainly see plenty of Sid jerseys at Yotes games. I saw 2 Sids and a Lindros Flyers one at the Hawks vs Yotes game last Saturday night.
The best though was the non-jersey wearing guys on vacation from Chi-town sitting behind me. They obviously had come out to watch Spring Training games. In their early 20’s aka the generation that Wirtz helped destroy. Didn’t know squat about hockey, especially the loud douchebag one.
I’m fine if you don’t know anything about the game, but how bout trying to learn instead making loud statements about everything. All he wanted was a fight to happen and kept bitching about how no one was fighting. I’m used to those types, always one in every crowd, but this guy was in a special class by himself. All3 guys probably would have been annoying regardless, but thanks to Bill Wirtz they were ignorant to.

If thats true (I don’t know), it probably has something to do with the Pens being a) two time EC champs and b) having beaten the Caps in the playoffs. The rivalry isn’t as entertaining because they’ve won everything.

I think the other way around’s viewpoint comes from Pens fans who complain about how enamored the Caps fans are with the Pens, but then we later see comments like “Always feels good to beat the Crapitals.” from people on sites that also say “Just, the Caps, just another game.”
I should have saved my old signature. Oh well!
I hear you. There’s definitely a big focus on the rivalry with the Caps of late, and even more so these past couple of seasons with you guys kicking our butts. If we didn’t have that little win in game 7 to fall back on, we’d be in big trouble.
And I’m not saying that to rub it in. Unlike some fans, I remember more of that series than game 7….like game 3, where we were that close to being down 3-0.

Speaking of heckling people, as I was waiting for a stoppage to return to my seat, the usher and a guy in a Pens jersey were in the midst of a conversation. Apparently Pens jersey guy is a Caps STH but breaks out the Pens stuff the two times a year they come to town. I get liking multiple teams, players, whatever, but that’s just ridiculous to me.

Anyone see Backes hit Rafalski last night? It looks like a clean hit to me, and NHL OTF said the same thing, but I’m afraid the headshot rule is going to take that hit out of the game. I’m not saying there should be no headshot rule, I’m just pointing out the concern about being overly aggressive taking hitting out. Live action it looks just like the Cooke/Richards hits, but Rafalski gets up. On review you see Rafalski gets up because it was shoulder on shoulder. Great job by Backes not landing a headshot (and I think that, to some degree, vindicates my position on the Richards/Cooke hits). But I’m obviously very biased pro-Backes so I was wondering if anyone else saw it too.

It doesn’t really address it. They say if you do lateral or back pressure and hit the body it’s ok, which is good. But my problem is that it’s so hard to tell what happens on the Backes hit so I think a ref in the game would toss him for what looks like a head hit. Hopefully on review the NHL would get it right, but why would we expect that?

Yeah it ought to. But the “lateral pressure body contact” examples were much more clear cut body examples. It’s really hard to tell what Backes hits, even on replay. Ultimately he gets shoulder but how can a ref know that at the time? I guess if the NHL gets their act together the worse thing Backes gets is a game misconduct (which can be rescinded) and no suspension. That’s a price to pay, but not a huge one given the injuries those hits are causing.

Yes, he signed over the summer. As for playing time, if I was a talented prospect I almost wouldn’t want to be drafted by the Caps right now. The rosters on all levels are stacked with talent, and very little room to move up anywhere in the system.

I don’t think either of those hits are illegal. It wasn’t really blindside or back pressure on Sjostrom. And I don’t think Green targeted or principally made contact with the head. The hit on Fedotenko was clean (which also means the hit on Boychuk would have been clean. He should have destroyed that punk.).

okay, just watched d’ohboy’s link above. sweet vid, but all the examples of illegal hits come on shooters who have just released the puck. the new rule prohibits prohibits “lateral, back-pressure or blindside hit to an opponent where the head is targeted and/or the principal point of contact.” why can’t the lateral hit come while the skater has the puck? and doesn’t the stevens/lindros hit play out EXACTLY the way this rule is written. lateral hit targeted at the head where the head is also the principle point of contact?

The rule wouldn’t limit it to guys that just shot, but NHL players are so good that it’s hard to catch them vulnerable and following through on a shot or pass is one of the most vulnerable moments.
Here’s the difference with Stevens/Lindros and Cooke/Savard. Imagine both Savard and Lindros have their heads up looking directly ahead. Lindros would have Stevens in his line of sight, Savard wouldn’t have Cooke in his sight. So while Stevens doesn’t come from directly in front of Lindros, it’s still a frontal attack. Cooke chases down Savard and side-swipes him on the head. Cooke could side-swipe and get shoulder, but didn’t. With Lindros dangling his head in front of his chest like some low-hanging fruit there wasn’t much chance for Stevens to not hit head. Even aiming center mass puts Lindros’ head in the target zone because it’s right in front of his sternum.

i like the “is he in your line of sight?” clarification. and on second look, it definitely separates stevens’ hit from cooke’s hit. but i still wish the league had included in their instructional video a few head shots delivered to skaters in possession of the puck. obviously sjostrom should have anticipated the green hit…sjostrom is on the glass and a run from center ice is the only place he’s vulnerable. but as it plays out, i don’t think green is in sjostrom’s line of sight at all. sjostrom ducks kozlov and extends for the puck straight ahead. it’s not “blind side” and it’s not “back-pressure” but i do think it’s lateral and i do think it fits the rule as written. add on the fact that trainers were called to the ice, and i think green’s in trouble if the events were to play out a month from now.

Yeah you make a real good point about how vague the rule still is. It’ll still be hard to figure out which hits are good and aren’t. They made the rule for Richards/Cooke which were obvious, and most of the hits in the NHL instructional video are obvious, but you’ve found some good gray area. I would say that I’ll be pissed if the Sjostrom hit is legislated out of the game. As a hockey fan that doesn’t strike me as the least bit illegal or dirty. I think the head injury was from banging off the glass, not Mike Green targeting the head.

Doesn’t look like it fits under this rule, but that sure as hell was a charge. He came from the front and it looks like contact is primarily on the body. But he still took a run from his own goal line into the neutral zone.

Ah, OK. #1 led to my confusion regarding #2.
Although the remarkable thing about Malkin is that all 88 of his PIMs are minor PIMs and he doesn’t have a single major. He’s tied for third in the league with 43 minor penalties. The man makes bad Sasha look tame.

By my calculations, 2^14 is 16,384. 1 sequence out of 16,384 is right about 6 ten-thousandths of a percent, or .00006.

Washington Capitals owner Ted Leonsis and the estate of sports entrepreneur Abe Pollin have reached an agreement on a price for Leonsis to purchase the Washington Wizards and Verizon Center, overcoming the single biggest obstacle in his path to take ownership, according to several sources familiar with the negotiations.
The entire value of the team and arena is pegged around $550 million, according to sources, though the exact cost to Leonsis’s group is far less than that because it already owns 44 percent.
