Tuesday Caps Clips: Down the Stretch They Come

From yesterday's practice, via Caps In Pictures

Your savory breakfast links:

  • Good stuff on Bruce Boudreau and his goalies... but no "he's hard on goalies because he doesn't understand the position" reference? [D.C. Sports Bog]
  • Speaking of his goalies, Jose Theodore has been really, really good for two-plus months now. [Corey Masisak, The Gazette]
  • Brooks Laich on tomorrow night's game: "Just another hockey game. It'll be a good hockey game. A very good team, a team we respect, but just another game." Agreed. [CI]
  • What to watch for down the stretch. [Bruce Boudreau, WaPo, Peerless, OFB]
  • Is Alex Ovechkin closing in on a third-straight Hart Trophy? Yes? Just checking. [FanHouse]
  • His coach sure thinks so. [D.C. Sports Bog]
  • We all know how great a leader AO is, but vote and let everyone else know. [NHL.com]
  • Related: "Alexander Ovechkin's Nomination Mocks the Values of the Messier Leadership Award" is guaranteed to be the most unintentionally funny headline you read all day. [ChicagoNow]
  • For just the second time since March of 2007, Mike Green has only three shots on goal over a four-game span. The first time? In last year's playoffs. Might Green be heading for another post-season let down? [RtR]
  • David Steckel has been the third-most successful faceoff man in the League since 1997-98. Impressive. [BtN]
  • Dean Evason: assistant coach of the year? [FanHouse]
  • Fresh power rankings are out, with the Caps holding onto the top spot at Sporting News, ESPN, TSN, CBS Sports and down one to second at The Hockey News.
  • Nevertheless, pundits continue to pick "other" when given the opportunity to call the Caps Cup faves. Which is good. [CBC]
  • Did the Caps really offer Tomas Fleischmann, Karl Alzner and a pick to Toronto for Tomas Kaberle? Doubtful. [The Star]
  • Episode 6 of Caps Red Line Monday is now available online. [Caps365 (video)]
  • If you're still burning about the new Caps goal song, find support here. [Hockey Chronicles]
  • Got an NHL.com gift card burning a hole in your pocket? Here's a list of what you should get (once you have purchased authentic home and away Jeff Schultz jerseys, of course) and what you should avoid. [Examiner]
  • Speaking of pushing product, the Caps' "10 Greatest Games" DVD set hits stores today, and i's never too early to think about Christmas gifts. [Amazon.com]
  • If you missed the Bears' St. Pat's Day unis, check 'em out (and what I wouldn't give to see Mathieu Perreault, while wearing one of those, say, "They're magically delicious!"). [RtR]
  • You will either love Stefan Della Rovere or love to hate Stefan Della Rovere. We're already solidly in that first camp. [Puck Daddy]
  • Speaking of Delly, your weekly Farm Report. [FanPost]
  • Finally, happy 22nd birthday to Michal Neuvirth, happy 34th to Nolan Baumgartner, and happy 52nd to Bengt-Ake Gustafsson.

Messier definitely never did anything dirty or suspension worthy in his NHL career. Definitely not as a player that is considered one of the best leaders of all time.

I think my favorite line of that whole article is

In 2006, Ovechkin received five boarding majors and a game misconduct for hammering then-Philadelphia forward Daniel Briere.

.

which implies that not only did Ovechkin get five boarding majors on the same play, but that Daniel Briere played for Philadelphia in 2006.

Well, as a Chicago native myself, I could tell that just by the masthead of that blog.

I’m assuming the writer is the guy on the banner at the top of the blog wearing both a Cubs jersey and a White Sox jersey. No self-respecting Chicagoan likes both of those teams and would be caught dead wearing both jerseys. It’s like the law pretty much. So his credibility is out the window right there.

I also love that he puts the “five” in bold, so it’s clearly not just a typo or brain fart trying to write a “5 minute boarding penalty”. He wrote that sentence, looked it over, then decided the only revision needed was to emphasize the five. Never mind the fact that AO only got 20 PIM that game and doesn’t have 5 boarding majors in his career.

Of all our iniquities ignorance may be the worst

by Killer_Carlson on Mar 23, 2010 1:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Strange that Ovechkin has accrued 297 PIM in his first five seasons in the NHL while Messier racked up 578 PIM in his first five. But yeah, I guess it is fair to use Ovechkin’s penalties to contrast him with Messier.

Suspended one game by NHL during 1983-84 season for receiving three game-misconduct penalties during course of season… Suspended six games by NHL during 1983-84 season for hitting Thomas Gradin over the helmet with his stick during Edmonton’s Jan. 18, 1984, game vs. Vancouver. Gradin suffered a mild concussion… Suspended 10 games by NHL for cracking Jamie Macoun’s cheekbone in a fight during Edmonton’s Dec. 26, 1984, game at Calgary. Messier was retaliating for having been boarded by Macoun earlier in the game, but the NHL ruled that he had instigated the fight… Suspended six games by NHL during 1988-89 season for hitting Rich Sutter in mouth with a high stick during Edmonton’s Oct. 23, 1988, game at Vancouver. Although Messier was not called for a penalty on the play, Sutter suffered four broken teeth… Suspended without pay for three non-game, non-travel days and fined $500 by NHL for stick-swinging incident with Ulf Samuelsson during N.Y. Rangers’ March 5, 1993, game vs. Pittsburgh… Suspended two games and fined $1,000 by NHL for hitting Mike Hough from behind during second period of N.Y. Rangers’ Oct. 6, 1996, game vs. Florida

You do a great job of pointing out that Messier wasn’t the posterchild for avoiding contact here, and I will readily admit that he took his shots.

But consider the current state of the NHL.

The league is rushing to pass to new rules to make head shots illegal, and the league has been very public in its efforts to move away from unwarranted physical violence. When Messier was getting suspended, the league wasn’t taking a stand against physical play; back in the day, they let men handle their business like men, on the ice. Now, however, the league is going out of its way to clean up the hitting in the game.

In light of those efforts, is it not hypocritical for the league to nominate a guy that’s been suspended twice THIS season for a “leadership” award?

The league may not have been taking a stand against physical play, but considering Messier was suspended 17 games over just 2 seasons it obviously cared about outright dirty play.

Um…if Messier was getting suspended and penaltized back in a day and age when the league wasn’t cleaning up the hitting in the game, wouldn’t it stand to reason that he was a much, much dirtier player than Ovechkin, who plays in an age where there’s more scrutiny but hasn’t received anywhere near the kind of punishment that Messier did?

Isn’t it more hyprocritical to name a leadership award for said dirty player? And even more hyprocriticial to then praise said player while calling the nomination of a less dirty player (who has never swung a stick at a guy’s head—something Mess did twice) a disgrace?

a win in regulation on Wednesday will clinch the east for the washington capitals.

by KWclevpark on Mar 23, 2010 7:13 AM EDT reply actions

Almost. A win in regulation will give the Caps an 18-point lead over the Penguins, with Pittsburgh having the capacity to earn 16 points (eight games). If the Caps win in extra time, they will have a 17-point lead with the Pens having that 16-point availability..

So, if the Caps win, they win, any way you cut it.

Buffalo can get to 110. They don’t play until tomorrow night against Montreal. If they lose, they can get to 108. IN that case, if the Caps win against Pittsburgh, Buffalo will be eliminated. Both teams can get to 108, but the only way I see Buffalo getting there is tying the Caps in wins (i.e., winning out in their last nine games to finish with 48 wins). Caps win the tiebreaker on more points earned between the two clubs.

Howard would not necessarily be my top rookie goaltender, although in the spirit of the “last ten games” theme, he certainly could cement that place. Tuukka Rask has better numbers and in his own way has been as important to the Bruins’ playoff hopes as Howard has been to the Wings’. Howard would have the slight edge, perhaps (but not far and away), because of his finishing kick (9-2-1 in his last 12 decisions). Rask is 7-3-0 in his last ten decisions and has the burden of playing behind the worst offense (by a lot) in the league.

If you've read this far...seek help.

I can buy the Rask argument. It’s more against Tavares being a finalist than anything else.

Rask has only marginally better numbers than Howard, but has played in a lot fewer games. When the stats are as close as they are I give the edge to the guy who has been a workhorse for his team over the guy who has been a split starter for most of the season.

Rask may have a worse offense in front of him, but he’s also playing in the woeful Eastern Conference, while Howard has had to keep Detroit in the playoff hunt in the far more competitive West. While Detroit is surging now that they are healthy, the biggest reason why they were able to survive the tons of injuries they had was Howard. I think Howard’s ability to help Detroit keep pace with or hold off teams like Colorado, Nashville, Calgary and Anaheim is more impressive than Rask splitting time and staying ahead of the Rangers, Atlanta and Florida.

But I’ve been saying for a while that Howard is my pick for the best rookie, let alone best rookie goalie. I can also see a good argument for Myers winning it, but there is no way that Tavares should be a finalist. There are at least 2 guys that have been more impressive at tougher positions, and someone else who has been better at the same position.

Of all our iniquities ignorance may be the worst

However, I always get a chuckle listening to them attempt VarLAmov’s name.

Ovi is going to be even more of a juggernaut in the playoffs and the rest of the team will tap into that. Can’t wait.

On a somewhat related note, on the Laich possibly pricing himself out of Caps budget convo from yesterday, I wonder how affected Laich is with the knowledge that he will never wear the “C” on this team while Ovi is around. More incentive to move and lead elsewhere once he’s an UFA?

Do you think he wants a letter bad enough to do that, though? There’s few teams he would be considered for captain, as well. Edmonton, probably, possible TOR or MON…

I don’t doubt he’d be a good captain, but most teams either a) already have a long term captain (Iginla, Brown) or b) have one in waiting (Weber).

bad enough to leave? i don’t know. Laich is very tactful with media, so it’s tough to tell how much he wants it. no doubt he wants to win most of all, but i can imagine a scenario where the Caps win the Cup and Laich wanting to take the next step, leadership wise. it all depends on how much more he progresses, but he undoubtedly would be an excellent Captain.

Tradition seems to be either a) your best player is your captain, or b) a skilled player with a great attitude and long tenure on the team. You can find plenty of exceptions, of course, but I just don’t see Laich going to another team and being named captain in short order.

At what point do the overlords give him a letter? Seems to be a similar situation to Nashville last year. Dumont (Poti) was performing very poorly and not really a good leader at all, and he was the guy with the permanent “A”. Trotz promptly took it from him and gave two permanent ones out to Weber (Laich) and Sullivan.

Obviously you don’t want to take Knuble’s “A”, but I definitely think Laich or Backstrom should have a letter.

Backstrom is such a quiet guy… I think he’s just fine sans “A”. Laich is a Knuble-in-training. He’ll get Knuble’s when it’s time. And I do agree that a defenseman should have one, and since Greenie isn’t mature enough, Poti is the only choice.

Alzner. He was a Captain of his WHL team for several years and twice a Captain of Team Canada. Carlson wore an A in the WJC but he doesn’t have that same natural leadership or experience from what I’ve seen. But ultimately I think both guys may be a little late. The leadership core of this team is here now, and it’ll be awfully hard to crack it coming along later. We’ll see though.

From reading Corey’s article about Theo, it occurs to me that Theo’s success is also pretty much coincident with Ovechkin’s accession to the captaincy.

Let’s not forget the role Irbe has played in Theo’s consistency this season. I think he relates better to Theo and Varly than Dave Pryor since he’s much closer in age and he seems to have added some calm to Theo’s game. You could make the argument that this is the best stretch of games Jose’s played since his Hart year and I bet Irbe has played a significant role.

I also thought that Irbe’s coaching may have helped Theo. I’ve noticed that Theo seems bigger in the net, challenges with more confidence, and has improved his rebound control, especially with pushing the puck into the corner. I don’t know that much about Irbe’s career except that I remember reading that he was a smallish goaltender who always seemed big in the net.

by capsyoungguns on Mar 23, 2010 3:12 PM EDT up reply actions

I’ve suspected that another contributing factor to Theo’s recent success may have been his having come to terms (don’t know if that’s the right terminology, but it’ll have to do) w/ the loss of his child and speaking openly about it (e.g. Tarik’s heartbreaking article). Seems the timing on that tracks his recent streak.

I know it’s intangible, but we always talk about goalies’ mental status, and it’s possible Theo was more deeply affected (understandably) by the tragedy than anyone really knew (though many suspected).

In short, he’s now got his mojo back and is focused more than he’s ever been.

I like the Washington Capitals.

by bigeugene on Mar 23, 2010 10:22 AM EDT up reply actions

I think that’s true. If you’ve lost people close to you, getting through holidays the first time is especially tough. There was speculation in the blogosphere at the time that perhaps Christmas was proving difficult for Theo. He confirmed that. There would be nothing tougher than going through a first Christmas when you thought a child would be part of it, and isn’t. All of it would be painful. It will be interesting to see how he does as the son’s birthdate approaches. The first year after a significant loss is full of milestones and remembrance of what was happening a year ago leading up to the loss.

I am really enjoying our pledge drive for Theo’s foundation. It’s so much fun to watch each game and count up the saves, plus all the different combinations of “if he gets first star, I’ll give this, if a shutout, I’ll give that,” plus all the special pledges for the Pens game, etc.

It’s keeping me motivated during the stretch run for sure.

Can’t really decide if that was a temper tantrum or just two teams that really, really dislike each other and it spilled over at the end of the game.

Howard did jump in there when Zetterberg and Bertuzzi basically had it under control…

it’s two teams that hate each other, but Crosby threw an tantrum after the clock expired because his panties were all in a bunch that once again, Zetterberg managed to shut him down (and, oh , Zetters scored twice, too. Gotta sting). It was uncalled for.

Malkin did pretty much the same thing to Zetterberg in the finals last season, except punches were thrown.

Why don’t penalties roll over to the next game? That would keep things under control late in the game. A rule that anything that happens in the last five minutes can be rolled over to the next game, so 2 minute minors or 5 minute majors could be at the start of next.

...should have.

But that’s the key part there, isn’t it? And it’s clearly spelled out in the rule book, too:

47.22 Fines and Suspensions – Instigator in Final Five Minutes of Regulation Time (or Anytime in Overtime) – A player who is deemed to be the instigator of an altercation in the final five (5) minutes of regulation time or at anytime in overtime (see 47.12), shall be suspended for one game, pending a review of the incident. When the one-game suspension is imposed, the Coach shall be fined $10,000 – a fine that will double for each subsequent incident.

The suspension shall be served unless, upon review of the incident, the Director of Hockey Operations, at his discretion, deems the incident is not related to the score, previous incidents in the game or prior games, retaliatory in nature, "message sending", etc. The length of suspension will double for each subsequent offense. This suspension shall be served in addition to any other automatic suspensions a player may incur for an accumulation of three or more
instigator penalties.

No team appeals will be permitted either verbally or in writing regarding the assessment of this automatic suspension as all incidents are reviewed by the Director of Hockey Operations as outlined above.

That’s the only reference I can find for a coach being fined for a major penalty “automatically.”

Its not the only Preds-Burrows incident. This year Smithson boarded him, and he laid on the ice for about five minutes writhing, which got Smithson a gamer. You can easily see in the replay him looking up to see what was going on, and he was absolutely fine the rest of the game. That was what led to the Auger incident.

Clutterbuck is a good example— I kind of like him, he’s not that dirty and he’s fun to watch.

Burrows was undrafted. Who knows how guys may or may not develop. SDR has never been asked to play a real offensive role (I mean in terms of scoring) so maybe he does have untapped potential. I’m not counting on it, and of course DC won’t be the place he is asked to start scoring, but seeing what that guy is willing to do I’m not counting him out.

Great stuff, Laichitor. I don’t know how this comment has sat unattended like a dumpster baby for almost 6 hours. I’m gonna get this dumpster baby a tan.

This really demonstrates that face offs (and battling more generally) doesn’t just come down to size. Malkin is atrocious on the dot. Ditto Staal and Yashin. These are all big and skilled guys, but when it comes to getting down and dirty, they just don’t have it. The more we talk about and analyze FOs the more I think it really is just the GAS factor. You get sticks in the face, ribs, legs, wherever. You have to dig in and expend energy. Or, you could swing your stick and hope for the best.

I’ve said the only real time that our centers being smaller than the PIT centers might be a big deal is when they are in a direct one-on-one situation with them, and FOs are one of the few situations when that actually does happen. Maybe our size disadvantage isn’t such a big deal after all. (Now, the fact that the PIT Cs are better from 1-3 is a whole other story.) The Caps are top 5 in the league (or 25th if you are Darren McCarty) in FOs and yet Steckel is the only C we have who is above average size.

He’s been a huge piece of their team and he’s essential to their PP (FWIW considering how bad it is). You’d think they could use Letang at the point and score on the PP but it hasn’t worked so far. Maybe they just need a new assistant coach. I just have a hard time seeing Gooch being totally done at this point. Maybe he needs the Rob Blake treatment. Bottom pair, PP guy.

Yeah, you would think Letang would be great running the point. That PP is like me doing an algebraic equation. It looks nice on paper, but the numbers never add up.

He does look slower, but speed was never really his game. He had a smooth enough stride to get around but he’s not Lidstrom or Niedermayer out there. I guess him and Pronger are seeing the same thing this year.

If you read this morning’s Pittsburgh papers, one could come away with a slightly different viewpoint from the CBC article. The Post-Gazette and the Tribune-Review ripped the Pens for being a shadow of their former selves. And for those touting Crosby for MVP consider this gem:

Although Malkin’s numbers this season are down from the lofty standards he has set, his value is becoming increasingly clear. The Penguins are 3-7 in the games he has missed.
Perhaps more alarmingly, Crosby, who is tied with Alex Ovechkin for the NHL goal lead with 45, has produced zero goals and only three assists in the 10 games Malkin has missed.
-Tribune-Review

by b.orr4 on Mar 23, 2010 9:49 AM EDT up reply actions

That is one heck of a statistic. I imagine that means that when Malkin is in the lineup, teams are focusing more on him, probably based on last year, and that’s why Sid’s numbers are so good, especially the increase in goals. When Malkin’s out, he’s the target.

The Pens are definitely not the same team when Malkin is out, but he has been brutal (by his standards) this whole season.

One reason Crosby struggles when Malkin is out, is because the lines are all over the place. Crosby played with like 7 different wingers last night.

Gonch has been awful as of late. And he still wants $5m per?

The evidence certainly suggests they’ve declined since last season.

Isn’t anyone going to acknowledge that they’re now 2-3-2 in their last seven? Or that they only lost one game in regulation all of March last season? There’s no way you can say they’re playing as well as they did at this time last year. Pittsburgh is finishing up the season in a manner eerily similar to the way the Caps did last year… not fully engaged, playing out the string until the playoffs start. They’ll be up for the Caps (twice) and the Flyers, but otherwise play a bunch of tamata cans down the stretch. They’ll slide into second (assuming Marty gets a few nights off for NJD), probably push past Montreal in 4 or 5 games, they get whacked by either Brodeur or Miller in the second round.

Boston has serious goaltending questions in terms of the playoffs… start a Vezina winner, once removed, who has played once in the last six games (and who has a GAA that is more than half a goal a game worse than last year)… or a rookie who seems now to be the number one goalie, who has never played in an NHL playoff game (and don’t use the Varlamov comparison… Varlamov played behind a team that could score goals from time to time).

Not a happy choice. What’s behind door number three, Monty?

Should be fun against Pitt tomorrow. The Pens by rights should be playing with a sense of urgency. If they lose another couple of games, they’re going to be hard pressed to get a #2 seed. Assuming they care about that sort of thing.

I’m thinking more and more the Caps get the B’s or the Thrash.

I am so torn. My logical side tells me I want the Pens to get the #2 seed so that if the Caps face them it will be in the Conference Finals. However, that means I have to root for Pittsburgh to win and my emotional/hate Pens side tells me I can never do that. What a Sophie’s Choice.

by b.orr4 on Mar 23, 2010 11:00 AM EDT up reply actions

Great movie.

I’ve been rooting for the Pens for a month now. After the first couple of times, it gets easier.

However, if they’re going to stagger into the playoffs, it might be better to deal with them earlier rather than later. Who knows? I firmly believe that when both teams are in perfect health and playing at the top of their games, the Caps are the better team.

The book is better.

I’m ambivalently choosing the lessor of two evils by hoping the Pens keep the no. 2 seed. I think we are unquestionably the better team but there is so much emotional baggage between the Caps and the Pens. Lots of nah, nah, nah stuff. I also don’t want the Caps to have a game 7 hangover if we meet them in the second round. So let the Pens earn their passage to the Conference Finals, and if they don’t I won’t be shedding any tears. Let them get beaten up by other teams first if they are meant to get that far.

Plus according to the stats in the fanpost on the President’s Trophy it’s the #4 seed that’s more dangerous.

I find this stat fascinating—maybe it’s meeting another team so closely matched in the first round gets the winning team in a better playoff success mode. I love the unmasking of the jinx too—that 30% with those in first place is still a far better percentage than any of the other spots. It’s human nature I guess to remember the upsets—Sharks last season anyone!

by capsyoungguns on Mar 23, 2010 11:30 AM EDT up reply actions

I might be wrong, but I think the #4 overall team (not conference seed) was the one that was relatively dangerous in the President’s Trophy post, not conference seed. As of now, that’s the Sharks.

by grapejoos on Mar 23, 2010 11:46 AM EDT up reply actions

My bad. Math is not my thing but I have fun trying to understand the stats. I just won’t ever generate them.

by capsyoungguns on Mar 23, 2010 11:55 AM EDT up reply actions

I only figured it out after being puzzled how the 9th place team (Devils) ever won a Cup – then I realized it couldn’t be conference. I also was intrigued by the relatively high incidence of the #4 overall team winning, but really it just means it’s happened two more times (four total) than the #2 or #3 overall team winning (which have each happened twice). Probably random chance, but big hat tip to b.orr4 for doing the legwork.

I’m with you on not wanting the Pens to finish 4th, though. Give them 2nd.

The lack of “perfect health” is what did the Caps in the playoff last year. Yes, the Pens weren’t perfectly healthy on their blueline (Gonch) but they probably did not have 2/3 of their blue liners playing injured (with an additional one sitting out due to injury).

I cringe every time I hear “A guy should be out as long as the guy he injured is.” First off, it’s as dumb as penalizing the result rather than the hit because, well, that’s exactly what it’s doing.

More to the point of my revulsion to it, however, is its impracticality and what it incentivizes. “Uh, yeah… our team doc says he’s not ready yet so, um, your guy has to keep sitting.” Silly.

Right, those people would be idiots (for lack of a better term).

Bertuzzi’s was a premeditated (for days, at least) battery on an unknowing and unwilling victim, after Moore had already complied with “The Code” and fought earlier in the game and with absolutely no mercy shown after the initial contact. To compare that to what Ovechkin did would likely be the single stupidest thing anyone had ever written in their career.

So, the article about the goal song claims that we should use one that incorporates the “1-2-3, it’s all your fault.”

There’s a difference between a song that you want to listen to because you are amped about a goal, and one that is designed to get 18,000 chanting along. They picked the right one for the latter category, but no matter what they chose, it’s never going to be given a chance by enough fans without additional Caps PR support.

Thought I'd bring over the stuff on Fehr:

!!!!Warning: Wall of text below!!!!a Merging of several posts for yesterday’s Ups and Downs not a whole lot saw. In regards to clutch performance:

Comparing Mike Green, Brooks Laich, Tomas Fleischmann, and Eric Fehr under this standard: A player is awarded 1 point for each of the following goals: gwg, gtg, come back goal(G-CB), goal in OT(OT-G), goal in SO(SO-G), multi-goal game, SHG, PPG, and first to score (FTS). A player can receive multiple points for 1 goal, example being: a goal scored in OT will also be the GWG and be worth 2 points, if it was also scored on the PP it would be worth 3 points. As per some request yesterday I also added Empty Net Goals, the average of points per goal, and points per 60. Further below is the subtraction of PPG as some didn’t feel they were particularly clutch.

Come back goals are awarded anytime the player scores when the team is losing, not neccissarily his goal led to a win.

Brooks Laich – 25 goals on the year. 31 points. 3 – GWG, 1-GTG, 6-G-CB, 1-OT-G, 0-SO-G, 6 MGG, 1 SHG, 11 PPG, 2 FTS, 1 ENG…..1.25 pts/g….104.7 pts/60

Eric Fehr – 20 goals on the year. 20 points. 3 – GWG, 3 – GTG, 5 – G-CB, 0 – OT-G, 0 – SO-G, 1 – MGG, 0 – SHG, 3- PPG, 5 – FTS, 0 ENG……1 pts/g…..99.0 pts/60

Tomas Flash – 21 goals on the year. 26 points. 4 – GWG, 0 – GTG, 5 G-CB, 1 – OT-G, 0 – SO-G, 3 – MGG, 0 – SHG, 7 – PPG, 6 – FTS. 0 – ENG…..1.238 pts/g….95.8 pts/60

Mike Green – 17 goals on the year. 23 Points. 3 – GWG, 1 – GTG, 6 – CB-G, 1 – OT-G, 0 – SO-g, 2 – MGG, 0 – SHG, 9 – PPG, 1 – FTS. 1 – ENG……1.353 pts/g….56.8 pts/60***

Remember Green is a D and plays a lot more minutes than any of the other players.

Without PPG’s:

Eric Fehr: 20 goals, 17 points….0.85 pts per goal…84.2 pts/60
Tomas Fleischmann: 21 goals, 19 points….0.905 pts per goal…70.1 pts/60
Brooks Laich: 24 goals, 20 points…. 0.8333 pts per goal…68.7 pts/60
Mike Green: 17 goals, 15 points. ….0.882 pts per goal…35.5 pts/60

In a full game of mostly 5 on 5 or 4 on 4, Fehr is the most clutch. I make this assumption noting the lack of PPGs in this data set and therefore most of these numbers would then of come on the PK, or at even strength, or 4 on 4.

However including the Power Play Brooks Laich seems to be the guy to have. Now it is worth noting that of all these players Brooks Laich also averages the 2nd most PP time per game at 2:57 behind Mike Green’s 5:03. Flash averages 2:38, Fehr just 1:27. However: as far as more discerning TOI goes Laich averages 6 seconds less time on ice Short handed than Mike Green does at 2:06 a game. Fehr does not receive any PK time. So while Laich’s avg TOI is the highest of the forwards compared, he losses a lot of time on possible offensive chances by being on the PK which is not taken into account for and thusly hurts him

Furthermore: Stats are fun, but should be taken with a grain of salt. Its been a few years since my days in calculus, but an actual statistician could probably take the set of data I pulled and twist it to saying Fehr is better than Ovechkin. So while this data is interesting there are always things to consider

I wonder how many times the Caps have lost in regulation but Fehr has scored?

For those interested, here’s the Caps official statement:

Florida law enforcement authorities have continued their steroid investigation following the arrest of Florida resident Richard Thomas in May 2009. The Washington Capitals are not the target of this investigation, and there is no evidence that steroids were provided to any Capitals players.

This has been a thorough investigation, and we are satisfied that law enforcement, the NHL and our own internal investigation have not led to any link of steroid use by Capitals players.

The investigation included conversations with the Washington Capitals as far back as September 2009, and we were and have been fully cooperative and transparent in the past as well as today.

Dr. Douglas Owen Nagel, a Virginia chiropractor who was arrested today, is not affiliated with the Washington Capitals and is not the "team chiropractor," as he has stated. Dr. Nagel’s office, however, has seen some of our players for standard, routine chiropractic services.

As part of the NHL’s drug policy, Capitals players are randomly tested up to three times per year by an independent testing agency, which sends the samples to the World Anti Doping Association for testing. Capitals players have been tested twice so far this year. At no time in our history has a Capitals player ever tested positive

by b.orr4 on Mar 23, 2010 4:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Actually the chiropractor was arrested at his home in Reston, VA. I know that the US Marshals had personnel accompanying the FL officers, I was just curious why there were no Arlington County detectives present. Or why the Feds (ICE, FBI, etc) weren’t the lead on the case.

Poor Neuvy can’t catch a break. From Tim Leone:

Hershey Bears goalie Michal Neuvirth, who left Friday’s Albany game after re-aggravating a lower-body injury, participated in Tuesday’s optional practice at Hersheypark Arena.

Until Garrett Mitchell collided with him during a one-on-one shooting drill. The junior eligible forward lost an edge and submarined into Neuvirth’s pads.

“Obviously by accident,” Bears head coach Mark French said.

Neuvirth appeared shaken up and consulted with Washington Capitals goalie coach Arturs Irbe and Bears head trainer Dan “Beaker” Stuck on the bench before heading to the locker room. Stuck said Neuvirth was OK and hadn’t been slated to participate in the whole workout, anyway, so he just sent him off about 10 minutes earlier than scheduled.

SDR update

I will post an update to the Farm Report, but the OHL has announced the following suspensions from the various fracases at the Colts’ game on Sunday:

The Ontario Hockey League today announced the results of its review of separate incidents which occurred in the game played in Barrie on the 21st of March, 2010 involving the Colts and the visiting Sudbury Wolves Hockey Club.

Zac Rinaldo [ed. – Barrie Colts enforcer. He boarded Sudbury Wolves’ coaches’ kid]

The incident reviewed was a 5 minute major and game misconduct for interference assessed to player Zac Rinaldo of the Barrie Colts Hockey Club. In reviewing the incident, it is the position of the League that a player must at all times respect his opponent, especially when the opposition player is in a vulnerable position on the ice. As a result of his actions, player Zac Rinaldo shall be suspended for twelve (12) games.

Jared Staal [ed. – Sudbury Wolves player and yes, one of “those” Staals.]

The incident reviewed was a bullying action by player Jared Staal of the Sudbury Wolves Hockey Club and his involvement with player Alexander Burmistrov of the Barrie Colts Hockey Club. As a result of his actions, player Jared Staal shall be suspended for five (5) games.

Kain Allicock [ed. – Sudbury Wolves’ goon and the guy who clocked SDR in the faceoff circle]

The incident reviewed was a game misconduct assessed to player Kain Allicock of the Sudbury Wolves Hockey Club for his bullying actions. As a result of his actions, player Kain Allicock shall be suspended for five (5) games.

As I expected, no action on SDR and his alleged provocations. Fight on, Delly!

The Wolves’ season is done tomorrow night when they face the Colts one last time. I suspect the Colts will miss having Rinaldo around thru most of the rest of their playoff run, but he’s not a skill guy. Delly may have to pick up some of the enforcer slack I guess.

Definitely a Happy Birthday to one of my all time favourite Caps and the inspiration for my name on here

May, 1987: Before meatballs were served to luncheon guests, Swedish Ambassador Wilhelm Wachtmeister gave his approval to Gustafsson’s return [to the Caps], calling him “a good ambassador for Sweden in this country.” The embassy office room was decorated with Swedish newspaper clippings of Gustafsson’s heroics in the world championships…..

“I think he wants to add the Stanley Cup to the world championship,” [GM David] Poile said of Gustafsson.

The Stanley Cup also was on [Abe] Pollin’s mind. On the phone with Gustafsson, the owner asked, “When we win the Cup, what kind of beer do you drink?”
