Maybe it's just my computer
but the link for Vogs’ preview is taking me to NHL.com’s preview.
I agree with the possibility they put out, that Ovechkin will come out and have a big game, along the lines of a hat-trick maybe?

Make the case. We have Green and Carlson. I’ll take the C who actually produces against pros and knows how to play in his own end.

Orlov’s not a center anyhow but an offensive defenseman. Guess that means, the eagle will replace the crow in the long run.
Rocking the Red since 1975
F&B’s point is that Eakin has potential in an area of organizational weakness, whereas Orlov’s skillset is somewhat redundant (obviously you can never have too much depth on D, but you get my point).
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Look, Mackan excites me, but he ain’t Nick Backstrom. Sounds to me like his highest possible upside is Jordan Staal. Nothing wrong with that (in fact, I’d be thrilled), but Orlov could be a great 2-way puck moving defenseman.
And I don’t believe in worrying about “need” when you’re projecting out players who, if you’re lucky, will contribute in 2 years and come into their own in 4. Those guys are so young, I think the only question is who is the better player.

Based on the WJC and their pro stats I think Mackan is better than Orlov and will be better than Orlov. Mackan is no Nick Backstrom, but Orlov is no Mike Green. Mackan’s game is better all around than Orlov’s. I will also be lower on Orlov the longer he stays in Russia. Sweden does a far better job of developing players IMO.

I’m hoping to see more from Mackan in these playoff games. He had a pp assist but went -1 in the first game (a 3-2 loss), and was on ice for no goals for or against in their 3-2 OT win today. Though Coach Samuelsson moved him back to C for the game today.

Two comments on a couple of the links.
One: As much fun (?) as it is to track the awards in the prognosticators’ articles, for the most part, these are the guys who are doing the voting, so if someone wants to track it, you can pretty much figure out who’s winning before it’s announced. It’s all a sort of campaigning by interested parties that aren’t the players.
Two: That number for Backstrom? Not out of the realm of reality the way he’s been playing, is it? Gulp! And no doubt worth every penny. Just how much less than Crosby is he worth? Probably only to the extent he’s not the face of the franchise. (Good thing I’m not doing the negotiating, isn’t it?)
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
Its very hard to argue against Backstrom deserving $6.9+. I think almost everybody would agree that he has to re-signed.
Mike Green will be a polarizing topic when his contract is up. His numbers are retarded good.
I think most of us are hoping that it’s like a 20-year deal or something. In that case I don’t think he’s worth a cap hit of $7 million or more per year. But even up to twelve years I think $7 million is reasonable, though I don’t doubt GMGM can get him for less, partly because of that guy (what’s his name now?) who plays on Backstrom’s left.

I wonder if the Caps aren’t wishing they’d been the smart ones to come up with the frontloaded lifetime contract. If they had both agreed to add another five years for relative peanuts, the cap hit for that guy on the left could have been a lot lower.

That’s why I said add five, and I probably overstated the cap savings (but could have easily worked out to $1 mil plus). Would take him to 40. Hey, at the time who thought he’d sign for 13 years?

I was really hoping we’d be able to sign him for Kane/Toews money, but that went out the door sometime around the Olympic break. If we could get him for under 7 mil, I’ll be happy and surprised. Not to imply we’d overpay at that price, but that’s a hefty chunk of change in the salary cap era.
The more I think about the coming cap situation and re-signings, the more I’m convinced that Semin is traded either before the draft or at the deadline next season. Gotta make room for the guys like Green to get a raise (he’s earned it and then some), Carlson’s going to get a raise when he gets to his RFA years, I’m sure Fehr and Schultz do as well. I don’t think committing well more than half of our salary cap going forward to four players is something GMGM is going to do.

Better win that Cup this year and/or next, because it’s going to be tough to keep the whole gang together. Odds are that it can’t happen long term.

I know it will be hard to keep the whole gang together but ….
Here’s my try.
Dear Nicky, Sasha, Eric, Tomas, Brooks, and Jeff,
I know you wish to be paid market value for your heroics in hockey. However, the teams who have the Cap space to pay you probably also are lower in the standings and/or are low budget teams. Plus, you won’t get to play with Ovi. Remaining with the Caps is probably the way to get more championships rather than going elsewhere.

Despite a similar frame to his older brothers, Staal’s skill level is not quite as developed. He is tough along the boards and knows how to play a very physical game, however, he will need to improve his skating and puck handling to make it as an NHL winger.

I don’t know that there is a consensus or not. I’d agree that at this point he seems to be the least talented of the bunch. However, he’s still very young and raw. What I saw at rookie camp certainly wasn’t impressive. Probably was worse than even I thought as the talent pool at that camp was thin. Given the lack of prospect depth the Yotes have he may get a longer look than normal down the road.

CP2Devil, that place really looks like a ghost blog. That’s too bad
Keep in mind Travis’s blog doesn’t get anywhere near the traffic JR does for a variety of reasons. First off, the local paper doesn’t link to blogs like the Post folks do. I wonder how many people here first found this place because they linked from the Post at some point. Second, the Caps do a great job with the blog community. The PR staff is second to none I’ve seen. Third, I wouldn’t even have known Travis’s blog exists if I didn’t hang out here. Keep in mind I’m a hockey fan who lives in the Phoenix area and goes to roughly 5 games a year. Fourth, Travis has slowly been improving the quality and depth of FFH, but its not as good as this place. That is not a knock on Travis. When comparing any other sports site to this place, the other site is going to lose.
We are spoiled here. Plenty of other great blogs on SBN that get much less traffic. For instance, Lighthouse Hockey is tremendous, but I’m convinced more non-Isles fans know it exists than Isles fans.
"You ever use smelling salts, every time you type a bad blog?" Brooks Laich
I realized a lot of that, but I didn’t expect to see “0 comments” under several headings and a recent popular story not hitting 40. I guess I too have been only hanging around the more popular ones. And with the team making a resurgence and the stuff here about them selling out, well…I found J.R. by going on the internet searching for Caps-related stuff (actually via SI.com’s Caps page, where they had this and OFB listed as the main Caps blogs). I figured people on Phoenix would be doing the same.

I doubt it. This town is not as tech savvy as DC Metro area, though it is in pockets. Plus, Yotes lost a ton of fans over the last 5-7 years. I’m guessing some will come back now that the Yotes are watchable again. If it was the late 90’s I suspect more people would be reading/commenting at FFH. This town was much more in tune with the Yotes back then. Finally, even those who do follow the Yotes they are the second team they follow.

Depends on your angle. Are the pairings the “best” because they have two of the best D-men in a vacuum that happened to be paired together? Or are you looking at how styles complement (Green joins the rush, Schultz has a reach that can help negate a return odd-man rush, etc.) ?
Usually I sign in cursive, but I can't find the button for it.
Trying to combine both. Because obviously, Jack Johnson is not an elite defenseman nor is Matt Carle. Just looking at a basic BTN.ca table, Green and Schultz are both in the top ten, so I may be editing my post.

As long as they are in the conversation…where they belong
You have to factor in Greens points. He is a D-Man and when on the Ice the pairing is a huge contributor to the Presidents Cup team…You cant discount them because they are not at the top of the list on some obscure stats…they need to be debated on their personal talents and overall sucess if you are talking “Best D-Pairing in the league”
I ain't a playa, I just Puck alot
The obscure stats aren’t as irrelevant as you may think— if Green scores a ton of goals, thats great, but if he is on the ice for a lot of GA, then its not quite as good. The top defensive pairings are good at both— which is why Keith and Seabrook are the most dominant this year.

Well, Schultz’s GAON/60 is 1.68 which is among the best in the NHL, especially considering he plays against decent competition. Green’s is 2.53, basically middle of the pack, but when you consider he brings more than anyone else on offense…

Yeah, I tried to look at the play-by-play for one or two games. Looks like I picked the wrong games. Anyway, I was really shooting for:
Boyle/partner
Bouwmeester/partner
Chara/partner
Gonchar/partner
Doughty/partner
I probably should have just gone to Dobber instead.
Looks like these are the most common pairings for those gents (% is % of 1st player’s shifts he’s with the 2nd):
Boyle/Murray 53%
Bouwmeester/Giordano (30%)
Chara/Morris (37%) Chara/Wideman (25%) is #2, if you want someone who’s still on the Bruins
Gonchar/Orpik (37%)
Doughty/Scuderi (37%)
By the way, just for fun, you might want to throw Redden/Gilroy in there…

I’m very surprised by Volchenkov and Phillips right now— if I’m reading the table correctly, they play against the toughest competition of any pairing in the NHL, but the team gives up less goals when they are off the ice. Hm.

He probably has. You get a warped view of what productivity when your third line right winger has 20+ goals. And both (or all three, depending on who you count) of your second line wingers have 20+ goal. And when we have a winger with similar offensive stats as Zach Parise on our second line (for strategic reasons).

Nothing that hasn’t already been said. I’d love to see Giordano get some more attention, but that’s about it.
WRT to Volchenkov and Phillips, it looks like Clouston matches them with the best forwards in the league 5v5. Looking at the rest of their blueline, I can’t say I blame him all that much and when the QComp is that much higher for one pair, I’m not altogether surprised at their negative relative +/-.

Carle-Pronger is the odd duck in that group. Pronger hasn’t been elite in two or three years and Matt Carle is a nice player but not in the same category as any of the other pair members. Phillips – Volchenkov deserves a look

No, good question. In no particular order:
GF/GA when on ice together leveraged somewhat against the quality of competition when paired together
-Corsi when on ice
-good old points/ regular +/
Its still a work in progress; I’m changing some things around- Weber and Suter drastically tilt Corsi in our favor when on the ice together, but they don’t even play the best competition on their own team. Its certainly been an interesting study all the way around.
The only constant? Nick Lidstrom and Brian Rafalski. Those guys are freaks of nature.

Pronger hasn’t been elite in two or three years
Pronger hasn’t been the overwhelmingly dominant force that took over games and altered seasons since, well, last post season against the Sharks. Guy is still an elite defender, but he’s slowing down. He doesn’t have all that much speed to give up at this point; I could see him slipping quickly from here, but he’s still good offensively and still very good when he’s not out against forwards with elite speed.

Was watching NHL On The Fly this morning and two things popped out:
1 – Seabrook is ok and will play tonight against the ‘Yotes. Do you think Wisniewski now has a valid reason for appeal, considering the hit didn’t result in a serious injury (since this is what Colin Campbell is now stating as a primary factor for supplemental discipline)?
2 – The NHLN is really pimping Wed’s Caps/Pens game. A one-hour “pregame show”? This is still regular season, right?
"It hit me on the pants. I had protection. It felt good. Why? I wanted to win."
I would be livid if I were a Ducks fan. But it was a bad hit by Wishniewski. (Methinks the length of the suspension was a “makeup” call for the Blackhawks since Ovi got only 2 games for injuring Campbell.)
Rocking the Red since 1975
I’d like to think that the length of suspension was actually because Wisniewski’s hit was much worse, filled with malice and bad intent. I don’t think as a Ducks fan you get to be livid when your player goes out of his way to injure someone and isn’t as successful as you thought.

Seabrook made a questionable hit on Corey Perry earlier in the game. Payback.
"It hit me on the pants. I had protection. It felt good. Why? I wanted to win."
The scene: Corey Perry tries to squeeze by Seabrook on an extended puck hog around behind the net and Seabrook catches him a little awkward, resulting in Perry smacking his head into the boards. JWiz is at the point and sees the whole thing and charges in from the blue line, leaves his feet, both arms up and a full headshot into Seabrook, who collapses like a ragdoll with his eyes rolling into the back of his head before he hits the ice. Ducks announcer mocks the sell job. Wiz and Keith drop’em and Seabrook gets scraped off the ice.

Seabrook’s look in his eyes was scary. Looked like he blacked out for a little bit.
I agree that it was bad and malicious, but I also, for what it’s worth, think it was poorly executed by Wisniewski. His hands, from the replay (which I admittedly only saw a couple of times) got the upper chest on Seabrook for initial contact. For that, I think 8 games is too much. Maybe 4 games instead.

I agree it was a terrible hit, but I’m hoping the Ducks will appeal it just to force Campbell to clarify the NHL’s position. Is the primary criteria for supplemental discipline injury or malice? On Monday it’s the first, on Wednesday it’s the second. Besides determining what is/is not an illegal hit, the NHL needs to clear up the punishment guidelines as well.
"It hit me on the pants. I had protection. It felt good. Why? I wanted to win."
I’d like to think that the length of suspension was actually because Wisniewski’s hit was much worse, filled with malice and bad intent.
Bingo. The NHL had the chance to nail Ovechkin is they wanted, Campbell came out and told the world the hit was clean (or at least not suspension worthy) other than the injury, and I don’t really see giving someone on a completely different team a longer suspension as making it up in any way.
by David M. Getz on Mar 20, 2010 11:36 AM EDT up reply actions
Between Ovi and Wisniewski, the players’ fund is a little over $500,000 richer. Ovi’s share of that for this suspension was about $223,000. I’m not sure if they count his earlier ‘contribution’ of $81,000. Either way, that’s a lot of cash out of Wisniewski’s account.
Now helping to keep an eye on all things Gr8 at Alex Ovetjkin.
Also, I got the impressions from a lot of ducks fans that they didn’t think too highly of Wisniewski before the suspension. This at least forces them to play something else.

Signing or trading for a Restricted Free Agent is a very expensive, mortgaging the future proposition.

I am going to display my ignorance here:
I understand what the advanced statistics mean, for the most part, but I don’t have a good grasp of when the numbers start to become “good” and when they are “bad”. I can look, for example, and see that Mike Green’s 5-on-5 GAON/60 is 2.53 and know that for every 60 minutes of ES play his team gives up 2.53 goals. But beyond looking how far down the list he is, I don’t know how good that number is. Whereas if someone has 26 goals this season, I know, pretty much in a vacuum, how good that is.
Is there a good fixed point of reference for these statistics, or are the only useful when comparing any given group of players?
Usually I sign in cursive, but I can't find the button for it.
I guess
that you can look at team GF/GA numbers to know roughly where that fits in. With PPs and PKs ES stats don’t map perfectly to team GA/gm and GF/gm numbers, but it kinda works.

by red army line on Mar 20, 2010 10:24 AM EDT up reply actions
There really isn’t a good point of reference, and I think there should be. Honestly, your best bet is just to compare against other players.
And that may never change because league conditions vary. A pretty terrible GAON/60 today would be considered great in the 1980s because so many more goals were scored. So yeah, I’d compare him against folks who you think you know how good they are — pick some benchmarks like Chara or Volchenkov. And you always have to take into account goaltending, quality of team, whether they play in the good conference or the bad one, etc.

Thanks a million. A rec for a link to that FanPost and the obvious thought that went into it.
Conditions change for “normal” stats, too, though, but we still have this notion that a 100-pt season is elite (even though we know about that guy with the 200-pt seasons back in the ’80s).
I just wish I had a better grasp of the history of it, though, although I suppose there’s less history to grasp because the statistics are so new.
Usually I sign in cursive, but I can't find the button for it.
I should go further to say I guess I just crave the hockey equivalent of OPS+, which is probably impossible. Baseball is an individual sport masquerading as a team sport, so your OPS is not really dependent on your QUALTEAM (maybe the QUALCOMP in terms of opposing pitchers, but only to a small extent, because the baseball season is so damn long that it evens out pretty well). I guess there’s no inherent “bar” to these statistics (like the 100 for OPS+) because a lot of these rate stats are so dependent on what team one plays on with what pairing/line against what competition.
Usually I sign in cursive, but I can't find the button for it.
Hockey’s about 25 years behind baseball in all of this, but I think we’re getting there. Take a look at the work of Alan Ryder. Also,t he behindthenet blog is outstanding. This post is particularly relevant to what we’re talking about here (and the entire FAQ series linked at the top of the post is great).

Objectively, I do think it’s ridiculous to want to miss the playoffs when you’re so close. If the fans don’t show up, not as if the Bruins will fall very fall, if at all. Is there much of a difference between the #16 and #14 overall picks in the draft this year? I think not much, and making the playoffs, especially the SC playoffs in which we see time and time again that anything can happen, will offset that.

Chris, I read your counterpoint and completely agree. As a tortured O’s fan, I have seen my fair share of “fans trying to protest ownership” crap. They tried to do something a few years back where everyone went in, all stood at the same time and filed out. They wanted the whole stadium to do it. Thing is…the O’s (and more importantly Peter Angelos) sold more tickets to that game than they normally would because people wanted to “protest”. The O’s still profited and they didn’t care if you saw the whole game or not.
SCOC is telling season ticket holders not to go. Yet, those same STH still paid for the seats. Plus, that team has been devastated by injury this year. How can you really put that on the team and ownership?

that’s from so early in the season it might as well be worthless. Savard missed 4 weeks because of a minor MCL tear after that was done. I bet Washington’s numbers are lower than projected because the team has been remarkably healthy after the early season injury problems. And then there’s Detroit, who I’m sure will finish with more than 300 man games lost.

March 3, 2010: The Capitals acquire Joe Corvo from the Hurricanes for defenseman Brian Pothier, Oskar Osala and a ’11 second round draft pick.
Washington GM George McPhee went on a deadline day shopping spree, but ended up overpaying for the high-risk Corvo to the tune of a serviceable blueliner, quality prospect (Osala was No. 10 on Washington’s list in Future Watch) and a moderately high draft choice. A steep price for a player who can walk this summer as a UFA.

Of course, that’s nothing compared to the two minutes for roughing that Bouchard “got” while sitting in the box for a fighting major. The look on his face was priceless! He was so confused. Of course, it was a bench-clearing brawl in the third frame, and they listed off half a dozen or so players as penalized.
They corrected themselves a couple of minutes later, but Bouchard, when he heard his name called with the roughing minor, looked like, “WTF?!” and gave a very bemused/confused shrug, to roars of laughter from the crowd.

Pretty big dropoff in both conferences between #2 and #3. Makes it pretty critical for the lower tier teams to get up to #6 — then they’ve got a real chance. I see Vancouver as particularly soft this year. They just fit to me the profile of a team ready to get upset in the first round.

Well, its kind of a common sentiment. There doesn’t seem to be much solidarity on the back end and you just get the feeling they can’t make a run. But who knows. If they draw the Avs, it’ll be game over for COL. The Avs are the weakest playoff team in the West, IMO.

Eh, all the teams in the West are pretty strong, including Colorado. All they need is a hot streak by the offense like at the beginning of this season.

They’re all strong, but the Avs’ have very little experience and a poor defense.

The Avs early season hot streak was pretty well analyzed by Gabe Desjardins over at the BtN blog. They’re getting very high shooting percentages out of guys like Brandon Yip and Craig Anderson is just killing it this year. As a whole, they’re getting absolutely crushed in Corsi and shots, but they seem, somehow, to be holding it together.
If I were going to pick anyone as most likely to bow out in the first round, it’s probably the Avs.

Me too. But the West is looking really tight, and we all know it takes one hot streak…maybe if Tuukka Rask gets hot it won’t affect the outcome of Caps-Bs since there’s a big difference there, but smaller in the West, so I could see those small statistical nuances here and there becoming important.

The thing is that they aren’t that small. A little slip by Anderson or a cold streak from their shooters and their toast. I don’t watch enough COL games to comment on the how of their goalscoring (Any thoughts, D’ohboy?) — if they’ve got a lot of Knuble-style-grind-em-out rebounds and screens, they’re less likely to be susceptible to that and to have a higher shooting percentage, but yikes. The numbers are scary.

PHE v Col would be a horrible match up. If only because both teams are “cinderella” stories would hate to see them face each other but at the same time it garuntees one of them a 2nd round berth haha
I’m liking Boston v Wash still. On that bracket I’d see Wash > Bos, NJ > Phi, Ott > Buff, montreal could give pitt some trouble though
Nothing.
only if Montreal spends the majority of the game on the PP. 5-on-5, they’re awful

Montreal is going to give anyone trouble this year. They’re just good enough to be annoying.

I get the feeling that the true measure of a Caps fan is, like a certain superstar, being able to be borderline (here in discussions being OT, for the player in hitting).

Not really… She claims to not be a puck bunny, but her site pretty much makes her sound like a puck bunny. She drives all over the place going to games and then bragging about dating hockey guys, but then in the same sentence says she’s not a bunny because she knows the game. Please. I love delusional Flyer fans. Something tells me come playoff time they’ll be missing Knuble plenty. JVR doesn’t go to the bakery like Grandpa Slippers does.

Not too thrilled about tonight’s scratches, per TEB:
Matt Bradley, Tyler Sloan, Quintin Laing and Joe Corvo will be the healthy scratches.
Why is Erksine in this game? I don’t consider Tampa to be slow in the least. OTOH, if you’re scratching Bradley, you need someone in who’s tough, I guess.
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
I think in the toughness department Scott Walker, Jason Chimera, and a certain player returning from suspension is plenty. We’ve even seen big ol’ Schultzy drop ‘em once. Oh well, BB’s the coach, I’m sure he has some real reason behind it.
