Rink Rat & Rabbits Donation Drive for "Saves For Kids" (almost $2,500 Raised!)
Jose Theodore has started a charity, Saves for Kids, in memory of his son. If you haven't read Tarik's heartwrentching piece of Theo's loss, please do. This season, Theo will make the following donations based on his play:
- $2 for each save ($5 for the playoffs)
- $100 for each win ($200 for the playoffs)
- $500 for each shutout ($750 for the playoffs)
Theo will donate an additional $500 for each playoff round the Capitals win.
Knowing the generosity of hockey fans in general, and Rats & Rabbits in particular, G.O.D suggested that we come up with our own fundraiser to support this cause. So, here's the deal. You decide which game(s) you will be donating for, regardless of goalie. You set you donation levels. Put this information in your reply, and I will update the list each day, along with a running total of money raised after each game (might be the following morning, but you get the idea). You can donate 5 cents for each save, a flat $5 for a win, match Theo's donation levels, whatever. More important than you donation is your participation, no matter the size.
We can decide at a later date if we want to try and get all this money together and make a single donation to Saves For Kids on behalf of the Rink, or if people are more comfortable doing individual donations.
You can also, as some have already done, make a flat donation immediately. Information on how to do that is available here. If you have, let me know and I'll add you to the list so you can be recognized.
In case you're curious, Jose has already raised $3,800 with his play.

I’m in for .10/save, $2/win, $20/shutout
(remainder of season and playoffs, all goaltenders)
I have a C on my heart.
I’m in for this one too. Starting with last night’s game.
Minimum $500 if the Caps win the Stanley Cup.

I’m going Monday v. the Stars so let’s do (for that game only, regardless of goaltender):
$1 per save
plus $10 if win
plus $20 if shutout
I’m taking a non-hockey friend but I’ll send the Post article and try and pressure him into matching.
"This guy is an android. He's not human....Oh my goodness."
with a minimum of $15 regardless of what happens.
"This guy is an android. He's not human....Oh my goodness."
So, 23 saves by Varly (should’ve been 24!) so I’m in for $25 and my buddy is too. Any guidance on how best to do to ensure the Rink gets the credit. Happy to snail mail a check if you’re collecting and holding RedBirdie, or whatever’s easiest.
"This guy is an android. He's not human....Oh my goodness."
You can send it to Caps Charities with “Japers’ Rink Saves for Kids” int he memo line, or wait until we have something worked out. Basically, as long as the money gets to the caps, somehow, it’s all good!

Indeed. But I’d love to get all the checks together and have RedBirdie possibly present them en masse.

I’ll contact the Caps and see if we can get something set up to present the checks to Theo personally. That way people can join in.

Ok! contacted the Caps, they can’t guarantee Jose’s schedule (he may leave town as soon as the season ends is what I was told), of course. I’m going to keep in touch with Elizabeth and keep her up to date and see what can be worked out. She did assure me that, yes, the checks can be brought to the Caps offices and they would be happy to have them presented in person, even if Jose can’t be there.
I’ll keep you guys up to date as things progress.
and now I’m back to my meeting from hell and will check in tomorrow!

I’ll do the following, for JT60 appearances (including in relief) for the remainder of the regular season:
$0.10 per save
$5.00 per win
$10.00 per shutout
If Theo is the number one goalie heading into the postseason I will consider re-upping or doing a modified scale for the playoffs.
Game-Over Green? Canada-Over Carlson!
Oh, and I’d like to add $100 for any goal that Jose scores.

What the heck — I’m in on this, too — who doesn’t love to see goalies score? JT60 has one career goal, but anything can happen!

For the rest of the season (regular plus playoffs) for Theodore’s appearances (start or relief):
$0.10 per save
$2.00 per win
$10.00 per shutout
I was away the whole last week without reasonable network connection, just found out about this. I’m in.
I’ll add you tonight/tomorrow morning (depends if I have enough time to do it before the game. cross your fingers that metro is running smoothly!)
is you participation retroactive to the buffalo game, or starting tonight?
Kung-fu Rink Rabbit
The Blood Cult of Matt Bradley. Tune in Wednesday when Japers Rink offers their first burnt offering to Matt Bradley to give him an endless supply of the blood for his strident ways.
I'm doing this for the playoffs
$1 per save
$5 per save in games where the Caps can eliminate the opponent.
I look to the future because that's where I'm going to spend the rest of my life.
For the rest of the regular season (including today’s Buffalo game), for Theo (starts and relief):
$0.05 per Save
Min $20 (though I doubt hitting that will be an issue).
I’ll re-evaluate the financial situation come playoff time.
↑ ↑ ↓ ↓ ← → ← → b a (select) start
I’ll match this, with the expectation of at least $25. I’d like to do more, but the charity $ are pretty much pre-allocated in my household.

I'm in, in my own way...
For the PIT/WAS game on the 24th, I’ll make a $.50 donation for every Marc-Andre Fleury (or B.J.) save, and an additional $10 if it’s a shutout. $5 if MAF gets an assist/EN goal.
That’s right kind of you, docciavelli. Thanks!
Now helping to keep an eye on all things Gr8 at Alex Ovetjkin.
That's classy, doc.
and in that spirit, for the same game, I’ll donate $10 per Capitals goal. Between us, we’ll sweeten the pot with every Caps SOG!
Theo in net, for rest of reg. season: 10 cents, +5 bucks, +10 bucks.
I shall recalibrate (upward!) for playoffs.

How are we going to do this, BTW?
I like the idea of a collective Rink donation, especially if we can talk the Washington Post or another sponsor-type into matching funds… which we might be able to do…

And I’ll give Theo Miller’s star last night and start off with $10.

Bring the pain, boys!
Now helping to keep an eye on all things Gr8 at Alex Ovetjkin.
My random bet is one dollar for every goal Ovechkin scored from here on out and one dollar per Baxter assist. I hope they make me regret it!
2 dollars for Ovechkin goals in the playoffs.

Why I Love This Site
Fans like RedBirdie – total class! All right, I’m not easily parted from my lovely green stuff, but it’s a great way to let Theo know we’re right beside him, and if all of you are doing it, I can hardly sit this one out, now can I. But I’m not going for saves — sorry, I’ve seen our defense. That would be too painful! With Theo in net, from Buffalo through the playoffs, I pledge $1 per win ($25 minimum), and $25 per shutout, with the following bonus: $50 Conn Smythe; $100 Stanley Cup. I can just about afford that!
$1 a save at the next Japers’ pick up game (if anyone is willing to keep track).

I’ll include last night in mine, but I had to figure out finances before I could state this one.
Starting with last night, for Jose only:
Regular Season:
$1/save
Double the save number if it’s a shutout
Playoffs, regardless of goaltender:
$1/save, doubled for a shutout
$5/win (adds to saves)
$10/series
No Alex, no ratings. Know Alex, know ratings.
Quick calculation for last night tells me Theo picked up very close to $300 from the Rink last night. Way to go, Theo!
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
Came over to see what I’m up to so far and saw a typo. I was matching Hello Dahlen’s post of:
$0.10 per save
$2.00 per win
$10.00 per shutout
The list at top shows $20.00 per win instead of the $2.00 per win amount (I think Desperado made the same pledge). By the way Jose played Wed and Sat, I wouldn’t be surprised if he wins quite a few more into the playoffs, which at that higher rate would put my mortgage payment in jeopardy!
"It hit me on the pants. I had protection. It felt good. Why? I wanted to win."
check out our running total! Theo’s performance raised some SERIOUS money last night! We have $575.75 pledged from just 3 games. Rink’ers rcok, thank you everyone for your pledges, and your recs!

Our good buddy Ed Frankovic has generously pledged $100 to the cause, another $50 (for a total of $150) if the Caps make the Finals and yet another $50 (for a total of $200) if they win it all. Mark him down, Birdie!

All of Theo's wins
Having given this a bit more thought, in respect for our Theo’s loss which occurred long before the Buffalo game, I hereby revise my pledge: With Theo in net, from the start of the season through the playoffs, $1 per win, $25 per shutout, with the following bonus: $50 Conn Smythe; $100 Stanley Cup. Now I have to look up his stats. Hmm. Perhaps should have done that first. Oh well, the pledge stands.

thank you! I will add you to the list as well. (Off the top of my head, I think you’re around $25 for wins, and $25 for Theo’s lone shutout this season)

Farewell, disposable income!
I don’t mind parting with it for the kids or the hospital, especially after the way he talked about the staff there, and it is actually fun with so many others taking part. I am already on the list, though, so you only need to modify that pledge. Thanks again, RedBirdie!

and since fewer people are doing Varly games, and Varly has lost twice, the donation totals for Varly games tend to be quite a bit lower (which is fine, any donation is better than no donation!). I generally see a BIG bump in the total after Theo games. But Ed’s $100 made a nice impact on today’s numbers :) I assume Theo will start Saturday, so big bump, and then the next game is Pittsburgh, which has a lot of “extra” donations specified. I figure we’ll top $1,500 Thursday morning.

Don’t know if anyone saw this, but I especially liked this part:
Fans also have the opportunity to donate to Saves for Kids via PayPal on WashingtonCaps.com, either pledging based on Theodore’s statistics or making a one-time donation. In the week after Theodore’s story ran in the Washington Post, Caps fans donated more than $6,500.
Right on.

I’d guess not, as they’d be counting cash received.
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
nope, according to GAAP, pledges receivable count as an asset :)

Sweetie, you’re treading on my turf. And you really don’t want to bore the Rats and Rabbits with accounting talk. :-)
Because of where and how this was reported, it’s a fair assumption they were talking cash in hand. If they weren’t, it’s bad PR work, at least in my mind. And the Caps don’t do bad PR.
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
It’s all good (and veering a little OT).

I’ve been keepin my personal spreadsheet since we started, and I’m tracking all games, even though my pledge says Theo only. Scary statistic — Caps have one regulation loss and two OT losses (I think one was a SO, but didn’t note that ), and they all belong to Varly. Go Theo!
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
UPDATED! We have cracked the $2,000 mark, because of your generosity! I want to send an extra special thanks to docciavelli for pledging as part of last night’s game, and proving it doesn’t matter what team you root for, sometimes a good cause is just a good cause.
And special thanks to everyone else, too! LET’S GO CAPS!

It’s in reverse chronological order; the most recent game is at the top. For games that Washington didn’t win, you’ll have to click through the date to see who was in goal.

hide the picture!
I’m a little late jumping in, but wanted to find a clever way to contribute (and make the Knuble’s Knights more than a silly gimmick).
To that end, the Knights have made up some buttons (red one pictured below) for folks who may not feel like wearing a costume to games (don’t hate) but nonetheless want to show some support for Grandpa Slippers — and Saves for Kids. There are other products, but the buttons a) are the cheapest thing and b) visibly promote Saves for Kids.
I want to emphasize that all proceeds from all the stuff on this store will go to Saves for Kids at the end of the season (and beyond). If you buy anything here, you’re supporting SFK, not me.
