I love Deadline Week

Same here. I think it’s even better this week because the window is so small due to the Olympics.

I want Kubina and Center, but I haven’t decided which one yet. Maybe Koivu.

Wondered when this was coming….had people posting the same stuff in two different threads.

I agree on those two needs…especially the center.

Bob McK follows up on Wolski tweet

If Wolski were to be traded to Phoenix, Mueller and something else would obviously be involved. Phoenix has been shopping Mueller. Hard.

Mueller has really sucked this year…not sure what the Avs see in him.

Don’t think the implication is that the Avs want Muiller, it’s more that the Yotes want Mueller gone.

PHX is really desperate to give him up…that would cause me as a fellow GM to be immediately wary, as if his terrible season weren’t enough.

I feel like that’s a buy low/sell high situation for COL. I’m still not confident Wolski will be a healthy and consistent NHL player. Maybe this year he turned the corner, but maybe not. Mueller still has so much raw skill and potential that it could end up being a steal down the line. Sometimes guys just need a change of scenery. Daniel Briere (may he rot) was a spoiled brat in PHX and needed a trade to wake him up.

Killer_Carlson and Steckel Me Elmo are like brothers to me. And when I say brothers I don't mean like actual brothers. I mean it like how black people use it, which is more meaningful, I think.

by Rob Parker on Mar 2, 2010 5:56 PM EST up reply actions

I’d try to get something more out of them. Mueller is kind of like Wolski 2.0, except years younger. Let’s not forget that the Avs are in the thick of the playoff race this year. Selling Wolski for a youngster will not go over well with the fanbase. Plus, it’s not like the Avs need to get younger. . .

There's a fine line between arrogance and ignorance and only I manage to erase that line.

by D'ohboy on Mar 2, 2010 5:59 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, I’m not advocating it, just trying to offer a sensible angle. Mueller doesn’t have the injury history that Wolski has either, which is probably just as valuable as his youth.

Mckenzie alluded to it, but it appears that the Avs are just taking stock of their long term salary structure, and trying to see what’s out there. Not anything imminent or as a result of wanting to dump Wolski.

Wolski’s interesting. Very talented, but very frustrating. Given their position in the playoff race, however, I’m not sure Colorado would want to mess with their current lineup. See below for more details.

He’s a sniper compared to Mueller currently. Yotes would be quite happy. Mueller may turn out to be great shakes, but Yotes are done dealing with him.

Meanwhile, in Washington, a Capitals source told me Tuesday that although the team would like an upgrade "anywhere," the feeling at this point is the team may not do anything. GM George McPhee has never been a big fan of overpaying at the trade deadline, but we’ll see this time around. The Caps have never had a better chance at a Stanley Cup than this season.

I’m not really sure. I think McPhee’s shown a willingness to make moves at the deadline – he did and the fire sale and he did two years ago – but no one ever wants to overpay.

by David Getz on Mar 2, 2010 3:19 PM EST up reply actions

Agreed. I think the idea that McPhee is tentative around deadline time is false. If the rumors were true than he looked hard at Pronger last year but the asking price is ridiculous. Then there was the Fedorov/Huet deadline.

Basically, McPhee not overpaying translates, for some, into “McPhee is conservative.”

by Kolzilla on Mar 2, 2010 3:35 PM EST up reply actions

I think he’s a subscriber to Billy Beane’s dictum that, “You can always recover from the trade you don’t make; you might not recover from the trade you do make.”

I agree with that – I just think this year is a good time to shoot for an upgrade, and all the other pieces are in place.

"You want to start being part of the Rink? Fine, but more’s expected of you than John/Jane Cap Fan. And I don’t doubt that he’s looking into multiple options. I would be as disappointed as anyone if they can’t make an addition, but I doubt it will be a result of McPhee getting outmanuevered.

by Kolzilla on Mar 2, 2010 3:42 PM EST up reply actions

i dont know that i ever really liked Billy Beane all that much, but that quote is quite prescient here and now. I agree that this is the year to make moves. i just don’t want to see the competition get better while we stand pat…not this year.

by Redlined on Mar 2, 2010 3:46 PM EST up reply actions

Billy Beane taught us all that losing Miguel Tejada, Jason Giambi and Johnny Damon is OK because Scott hatteburg and Mark Kotsay can pick up the slack. What a genius…

by Kolzilla on Mar 2, 2010 3:52 PM EST up reply actions

To be fair, he didn’t really have much of a choice on any of those. Also, once the book came out, teams with actual money started getting in on his action. Moneyball was simultaneously the best, and worst thing that ever happened to Beane.

There's a fine line between arrogance and ignorance and only I manage to erase that line.

by D'ohboy on Mar 2, 2010 3:54 PM EST up reply actions

Not true. There’s no way Oakland could have afforded to keep those guys. It’s not like Beane said “hey they stink, get ’em out of here”.

by David Getz on Mar 2, 2010 3:54 PM EST up reply actions

No but he was lauded with praise for coming up with a system in which he replaced the big names with cast-offs while still managing to remain competitive. It hasn’t quite worked out for them though since their superstars left.

by Kolzilla on Mar 2, 2010 4:00 PM EST up reply actions

they remained a playoff team for several years after their superstars left. And the West isn’t exactly a cupcake division with the Angels.

by RedBirdie on Mar 2, 2010 4:03 PM EST up reply actions

Damon and Giambi both left in 2001. The A’s won 103, 96, 91, 88, and 93 games over the next few seasons. It has as much to do with other people catching on than it did with specific players leaving.

No matter how you slice it, Oakland’s performance under Beane has been impressive, as has his managerial style.

by David Getz on Mar 2, 2010 4:05 PM EST up reply actions

Agree to disagree. They haven’t won a playoff game since 2003. That pitching staff featured Zito, Mulder (when they were awesome), Rich Harden and Keith Foulke.

They were never quite able to build a contender after losing their top pitchers. Beane has done an adequate-to-solid job given his resources, but let’s not annoint him the greatest GM of all time.

by Kolzilla on Mar 2, 2010 4:08 PM EST up reply actions

Playoffs are a crap shoot, though, and he’s working with a lot less than most general managers.

His rebuilding efforts have been all that great, though as D’ohboy notes a lot of that has to do with the fact that people are catching on to his methods, but his track record is really impressive.

by David Getz on Mar 2, 2010 4:12 PM EST up reply actions

I feel like something happened in 2003… Oh yeah, Moreno bought LAAAAA and pumped metric ass-tons of cash into what was already a pretty good team.

FWIW, NOBODY outside of LAAAAA in the AL West has won a playoff game since then.

There's a fine line between arrogance and ignorance and only I manage to erase that line.

by D'ohboy on Mar 2, 2010 4:13 PM EST up reply actions

I’ll admit this: Beane really did pioneer the sabermetrics movement in baseball, and for that he deserves a ton of credit.

He just hasn’t used it very effectively in recent years.

For a GM who was lauded for his emphasis on OBP and SLG%, he’s let Oakland’s offense degenerate into a laughing stock while the team has finished under .500 for three straight years.

It ain’t just the Angels.

by Kolzilla on Mar 2, 2010 4:17 PM EST up reply actions

Well, in recent years, every other team has gotten on the sabermetric bus, so he doesn’t really have an advantage in that department anymore.

The key point of Moneyball wasn’t really that relying on sabermetrics is the best way to build a baseball team—it was that a team with a small budget has to find something that the big budget teams are undervaluing in order to be successful. Now that every baseball executive’s pet cat can tell you all about OPS, WHIP, and so forth (due to the book itself), it’s obviously going to be even harder to succeed.

by sixsevenfiftysix on Mar 2, 2010 4:22 PM EST up reply actions

He made it alot more famous, and pioneered how it related to player salaries, but there were books written on sabermetrics when he was still in highschool

Right, but Guerin would only go to a small selection of teams, so it was hard to get market value for him. F&B already did the Roy thing. Still, I think it’s pretty uncommon to not have to overpay at the deadline.

Most likely it was a Black Widow spider bite. My right leg below the knee swelled up to about 2 times its normal width and began seeping fluid through the skin. They tested for a blood clot and infections, but the good and bad news was that it was neither, meaning it had to heal on its own. I left work the day before Thanks giving and didn’t get back until Xmas week.

The leg isn’t swollen anymore but it is still discolored from all the shrinking it did (it had to build capillaries when it swelled up, and then they get smooshed when the swelling goes down.

Twas not fun… it felt like it was on fire, and I would not sleep for 2-3 days because of the pain…

Salei

I can see the Caps trading a mid to late round pick for Ruslan Salei.

He can play in all three phases. He looked pretty good in the Olympics. He’s physical. He’s got plenty of Stanley Cup experience.

Capgeek appears to be having some issues, but going from memory, they’ve got a bunch of guys set to be UFA next year, whom they would presumably be able to move. Matt Cooke being one of them. Mark Eaton being another.

Those guys would make enough room for Torres and Poni.

Not predicting that’s what will happen, just noting what they could do.

He struggled to have any chemistry with linemates, doesn’t backcheck consistently, and isn’t scoring worth a damn. When you are supposed to be a scorer on a team with little scoring you get noticed by everyone. Dude is 13th on the team in points. On the Coyotes!!! Daniel Winnik and Vern Fiddler have more points than he does.

Ever since his concussion last season the guy has been a mess. I would say he wasn’t great in both zones before that, but now he’s pretty much a disaster many nights. In addition, Gretzky isn’t coaching here anymore, so Mueller isn’t allowed freelance room like he got under Gretz. Tippet has sat him due to his play.

Travis over at FFH wrote this piece which defends Mueller about 6 weeks ago. I disagree with some stuff in it, but he does have some valid points.

The guy was rushed and it shows. He doesn’t do the little stuff well. However, he certainly has a skill set that says 20-30 goal scorer. I think a change of scenery will do him good. If nothing else, he may realize that what Tippet has been trying to get him to do is what others expect as well.

First post, i'll try to be gentle.

GMGM has always struck me as risk averse. Such aversion has had its benefits, sometimes not so much. Fedorov and Huet were fortuitous acquisitions. Sergei Berezin was not. Would Vokoun be an upgrade? Surely, we presume (thats all you can do sometimes). Hartnell would be an upgrade, too. My thought is to negotiate for what you want, and give up whats most palatable to get it, when it looks like you have the best chance.
I see the Caps as a great regular season team, this year. Boston was last year. San Jose has been for about 5 years now. You never know when injuries put a damper in your chances. You also never know when your best chances will be.
I don’t see the current center position as that critical, because the situation isn’t keeping the team from outscoring the opposition. Defense could certainly be shored up, it always can be. Detroit pays a hefty price for their defensmen, but they pay for what they get.
I think this is year is a legitimate chance at a finals run. Giving up a few nuggets (and I’ll throw out Alzner, Flash, Fehr and Morrison, Pothier, Sloan, Erskine, and draft picks, to bring back the essentials. After Ovechkin and Knuble (same line) there is a serious drop off in physical acumen. That is a key area for me. If goalie stays the same, pay for defense. If defense stays the same (ahem) paying for goaltending might result in assets gone while not fixing the direct problem. I’m curious to see what happens, because Mcphee has never had a team this good, while still having obvious problem areas.
Sorry for the long post.
I think mcphee should go for it because the iron is pretty hot this year. take the plunge.

That wasn’t really a risk, though. Clark was an aging RW who was still in DC because he was the Captain, that’s all. Trading a recently injury prone non-productive right wing along with a press box d-man for a legit 3rd liner isn’t a risk – it’s a trade you have to make, if it’s offered. As much DESERVED love we had for Captain Cadaver, that was a no-brainer.

The Thrashers have signed Chris Chelios. From the AP:

ATLANTA (AP) — The Atlanta Thrashers have signed 48-year-old defenseman Chris Chelios, a three-time Norris Trophy winner as the NHL’s top defenseman, who has spent the season with the AHL Chicago Wolves.

Chelios, who ranks second in the AHL this season with a plus-35 rating, is expected to remain with the Wolves for now.

Chelios was drafted by the Montreal Canadiens in 1981. He has participated in 11 NHL All-Star games and has registered 185 goals and 763 assists in 1,644 NHL games.

Nope, its important, but I think the softness on the 2nd line wingers may become an issue in the playoffs. Semin and Flash are easily pushed about, less so fehr but he hasn’t been a physical rock either. Like I said, that position weakness hasn’t pervented them from outscoring everyone else, by far.

Vokoun

I would not be surprised if GMGM is angling for Vokoun. Florida has given up on their season and can ride Clemmensen for the last month. They have a hot goalie prospect in Markstrom, and may accept Theodore as a temporary option. Does Theo have an NTC?

We’re so well stocked with prospects and cap room at the moment, I would not be shocked to see a blockbuster. A pick plus Semin or Fleischmann (throw in Bourque?) might be attractive to Sexton…

yeah, He would only be going to someone who wants to contend, and even then, the 2nd line becomes what, Flash Morrison and fehr? Id move flash before Semin if I’m running to the cup.
Semin will single handledly win one playoff series.

They could themselves move him, or there is an outside chance they could sign him to a deal. I don’t like moving him from a Caps standpoint, anyway…

Russian Machine very rarely breaks. Oh and f**k Brooks Orpik.

by macvechkin on Mar 2, 2010 3:54 PM EST up reply actions

It’s true they could move him, but I wouldn’t have faith in him having a ton of value or in being able to re-sign him if I were Florida’s front office, so I wouldn’t pick him up in the first place. I’d rather hold Vokoun and deal him over the summer.

by David Getz on Mar 2, 2010 3:56 PM EST up reply actions

A first rounder + prospects at the deadline next year.

by grapejoos on Mar 2, 2010 4:05 PM EST up reply actions

Is that more of a return than Vokoun yields?

by David Getz on Mar 2, 2010 4:07 PM EST up reply actions

I think it would be about the same. They’re both elite players, and I think Vokoun’s contract is neither here nor there in terms of trade value. If Vokoun is traded, I’d expect the asking price to be a 1st rounder, a young roster player, and a prospect.

That said, it would make no sense for the Caps to give up as big a piece as Semin to get Vokoun. This is just a direct reply to your question – that’s the only upside of acquiring Semin that I would see for Florida.

by grapejoos on Mar 2, 2010 4:13 PM EST up reply actions

That’ll be the asking price, but they’ll never get that much.

by D'ohboy on Mar 2, 2010 4:14 PM EST up reply actions

Depending on the roster player/prospect, I’d happily pay it. If Alzner or Carlson are involved I wouldn’t, but if it’s Fehr and an Angus/Bouchard-type nonessential prospect, I would. No disrespect to Fehr (or Florida’s front office in case that’s a horrendous offer).

by grapejoos on Mar 2, 2010 4:15 PM EST up reply actions

You’re talking about a great goaltender but one who:

A) Has an NTC
B) Is getting up there in years (33)
C) Has another year left on his contract
D) Makes almost $6m
E) Did I mention the NTC?
F) Has exactly jack and/or shit for a playoff resume (if you pay attention to such things)

FLA might want Chapagne, but they’ll have to settle for prosecco.

You’ll note that’s pretty severely elevated by one stellar pre-lockout performance. After that, he’s got a much more pedestrian stat line. (Small sample size, though.)

Fair enough. But if we’re in a world where Andy Sutton is worth a 2nd rounder and Carolina is demanding a 1st and a roster player for Ray Whitney (not that they’ll get that), I don’t see how a supposedly top 5 starting goalie wouldn’t be worth that much.

I guess there is the fact, though, that the only teams that truly need him can’t afford him and the teams that can afford him have less reason to give so much. I think that might depress the price more than the NTC.

by grapejoos on Mar 2, 2010 4:32 PM EST up reply actions

And the fact that he won’t waive his NTC to go to the shitty teams that could both afford him and need him.

I think it matters from an asking price standpoint. Theoretically the Panthers could have 29 teams to deal with if it didn’t exist. It does, so now they have as many as Vokoun says. If there are only one or two interested, it’s like the price goes down.

by bigonetimer on Mar 2, 2010 4:37 PM EST up reply actions

You’re fundamentally missing the point of the argument.

Vokoun will only waive the NTC to go to certain teams. This reduces the “demand” for his services. Holding supply of Vokoun constant, lowering demand lowers his price.

There's a fine line between arrogance and ignorance and only I manage to erase that line.

by D'ohboy on Mar 2, 2010 4:41 PM EST up reply actions

I think the point is that the teams interested in Vokoun for a deadline deal are only teams that he would waive the NTC for, so while that is generally true, the NTC isn’t a factor to depress the price here.

by grapejoos on Mar 2, 2010 4:44 PM EST up reply actions

The teams might not be one and the same. Chicago and Washington might both want him, but Vokoun might say “screw Washington, I can’t work with another right-catching goalie”. Thus the Panthers lose the options to play Washington and Chicago off one another the price probably comes down.

by David Getz on Mar 2, 2010 4:46 PM EST up reply actions

If Vokoun would not waive his NTC to one of those teams, then the NTC is absolutely a factor that would depress the price. Not the scenario I was trying to present. But enough on this from me – I think we all know what the other is saying.

by grapejoos on Mar 2, 2010 4:48 PM EST up reply actions

Unless FLA hides it from WAS and CHI and tries to bid them off each other and then just takes CHI’s best offer at the end (even if the WAS is a little better). There are still ways for FLA to play it.

Killer_Carlson and Steckel Me Elmo are like brothers to me. And when I say brothers I don't mean like actual brothers. I mean it like how black people use it, which is more meaningful, I think.

by Rob Parker on Mar 2, 2010 6:31 PM EST up reply actions

RIght, but the instant you limit the potential suitors to contenders you cut out many of the teams that need goalies and have cap space.

Consider the fact that he probably won’t uproot his family unless he thinks he can compete for the cup. Right now, that probably limits him to about 6 teams. Of those six teams, how many both have the need and the cap space? I can’t think of one other than the Caps…

There's a fine line between arrogance and ignorance and only I manage to erase that line.

by D'ohboy on Mar 2, 2010 4:49 PM EST up reply actions

I’m not missing your argument, fella. I just don’t agree that the existence of an NTC, in this case, significantly depresses the price he fetches.

Driving under the influence of hockey since godknow's when.

by bigonetimer on Mar 2, 2010 4:53 PM EST up reply actions

Because if the Caps did this deal, they would not be moving him for the remainder of the contract. Frankly, I can’t see any team worried about an NTC with Vokoun.

My point is not that the acquiring team is “worried” about the NTC. (I’m also not sure what you mean by that – are you implying that the Caps would be worried about their ability offload Vokoun later on?)

My point is that Vokoun has to agree to waive the NTC and, likely as not, will only waive it to go to a Cup contender. Most Cup contenders do not want Vokoun, because they already have a #1 goalie, or they cannot afford Vokoun, because of his salary.

In a market where the supply of a good is fixed, reducing the number of potential consumers should, ceteris paribus, lower the price paid for the good.

There's a fine line between arrogance and ignorance and only I manage to erase that line.

by D'ohboy on Mar 2, 2010 4:57 PM EST up reply actions

No, it stays in place.

by David Getz on Mar 2, 2010 4:34 PM EST up reply actions

Don’t think so. But I don’t think the NTC is such a big deal, since he’d likely waive it for a contender and any team picking him up is doing it for the duration of the deal.

by grapejoos on Mar 2, 2010 4:34 PM EST up reply actions

Ok. Here’s the problem though – that immediately limits the number of teams bidding for him. To put it simply, imagine a venn diagram like this.

by D'ohboy on Mar 2, 2010 4:39 PM EST up reply actions

The link just gives me the venn diagram generator. But I get the point. Here’s my point: if the asking price is less than that, I hope GMGM pulls the trigger. You could be right, and the Caps sit in the best position in terms of being able to afford Vokoun and having a need for him.

by grapejoos on Mar 2, 2010 4:46 PM EST up reply actions

Not just FLA, but any rebuilding team. Unless you say “we can have him and then trade him for a ton at the deadline next year” but I don’t think that makes a ton of sense. It’s basically the same position you’d be in with Vokoun (though it does purge the NMC) and Vokoun is probably a more valuable asset to most GMs.

Killer_Carlson and Steckel Me Elmo are like brothers to me. And when I say brothers I don't mean like actual brothers. I mean it like how black people use it, which is more meaningful, I think.

by Rob Parker on Mar 2, 2010 6:25 PM EST up reply actions

Florida would want young, cheap, high end talent in return for Vokoun. Young becuase it gives them a longer window of cost certainty and time to reap the beneifts of having them on the roster.

Semin does not offer the long window.

So, while FLA would no doubt like, in a vacuum, to have Semin on the roster, he’s probably not what they’re looking to get back for Vokoun.

Right, all good points plus contenders do not typically deal their top offensive players to a rebuilding team when they are making a run at the cup.

Ideally, you’d only have deal good roster players when trading with other contending teams.

Even if you don’t acquire another one, I’d be pretty disappointed in GMDP if the roster stays as is. A team like NSH, with Weber and Suter and Hamhuis and Fanson, and the only thing you do is pick up another D? Makes no sense. The Grebeshkov move has to be a prelude.

Emery’s out on injured reserve. So they’re down to Boucher. (The name literally translates to Butcher.)

Tangradi is their top F prospect. They got him in the Whitney trade. That would be a lot to give up for a rental. Part of me wouldn’t mind if PIT made that trade. Eventually not having a farm will catch up with them.

From Adrian Dater of All Things Avs

I think there’s a minor chance the Avs might take a chance on Carolina’s Joe Corvo – a good power-play D-man. It’s possible the Avs might bite the bullet and sacrifice a Liles or (maybe) a Wolski for him. The thing with Corvo is, he’s in the last year of his contract and would be a rental player. The Avs would likely want a pick from Carolina, too, but Jim Rutherford doesn’t want to give up any draft picks, so I see a deal there as unlikely. I’ve heard plenty of whispers that San Jose might take a shot on Liles, with Douglas Murray possibly coming the other way, but I think it’s highly unlikely

On Caputi (from Hockey's Future page) Grade 7.0

LW 6’2 184 21 y/o

Caputi has all of the physical tools to develop into a power forward at the NHL level. At 6-2, 184 pounds, Caputi’s game is based upon paying a price physically. He scores a lot of his goals from in front of the net, and is more than willing to muck it up in the corners. One area where Caputi must improve is his skating, where his initial stride is not as quick as it needs to be

For every action, there is an equal and opposite criticism.

by Rather Bengt on Mar 2, 2010 8:52 PM EST up reply actions

And
The 21-year-old power forward started the 2009-10 season strong with 13 goals and 12 assists in his first 36 games. As a reward for his hard work, Caputi was called up to the NHL on January 5th because of injuries. Through four games, he tallied one goal and one assist while averaging 11:46 of ice time. He also played with physical zeal, registering nine hits and on several occasions trying to find a partner with whom to drop the gloves.

Caputi’s game was not without flaws, however. He is willing to take punishment around the net and along the boards while still being able to maintain possession of the puck. But this was an area that needed work over his four-game cup of coffee as he was frequently overpowered around the net and along the boards.

Since returning to the AHL on January 22nd, Caputi’s play has risen to another level, posting 10 goals and 12 assists in the past 15 games. Through 51 games so far, he has 23 goals and 24 assists.

Sounds exactly like a Burke player. I’m sure Burke went hard after Tangradi but PIT wasn’t going to just move him.

I don’t know what it means to anyone, but I was hoping the Pens would move Caputi this deadline. I think this is about how high his value is going to get. He has shown he could score in juniors and in the AHL, but so did Randy Robitaille and Rico Fata. And they were both better skaters than Caputi. I was definitely not like other Pens fans who were high on Caputi.

by Link_Gaetz on Mar 2, 2010 9:08 PM EST up reply actions

Good news: I’ll be at work where we have a sports channel on 24/7 and I do basically nothing between 1-3 pm.

Bad news: that sports channel is ESPN.

Check out FFODC.COM and DCSportsPlus.blogspot.com!

He’s up there for me. Elliotte Friedman’s probably my favorite. His 30 thoughts are gold.

Definitely agree with that. Great stuff on the Olympic politics this week.

Killer_Carlson and Steckel Me Elmo are like brothers to me. And when I say brothers I don't mean like actual brothers. I mean it like how black people use it, which is more meaningful, I think.

Entertainment value I also really like Friedman, but I’m going to go with Bobby Mac for depth and analysis.

Yeah, he’s still the top dog in that game.

From Dreger

Pitt told Carolina on Monday night they were out of Whitney running. Ponikarovsky must be why.

From me: With the extension complications mucking up the trade to the Kings, looks more and more like Whitney’s staying a Cane

Toronto better.

Burkie should def be trying to get more than just a prospect for Poni!

by Vinn on Mar 2, 2010 9:09 PM EST up reply actions

Ponikarovsky is a 30 year-old player who maxes out around 20 goals and disappears for stretches. Burke just got a player who is considered (by some people…not me) to be a potential 25-goal net crashing winger.

Prospect+ Draft Pick would be fitting, imo

That’s why I’m not too concerned about Poni. He’s never struck me as the guy to turn it on for playoff hockey, and I don’t recall him ever proving that wrong. He’s an upgrade, and Shero is killing it, but he’s not a star by any means.

I have said enough about what I think about Poni in here. But I hope this lights a fire under GMGM to do something and not stay put.

PPP saying he has stone hands and no shot accuracy. Maybe he can be the second coming of Dupuis for PIT.

by Rob Parker on Mar 2, 2010 9:19 PM EST up reply actions

I think Shero knows all of this about Poni. And that Caputi will, at best, develop into a similar diappearing player.

But he is still an upgrade over Dupuis, Fedotenko, Talbot, et al.

Unless Feds can keep bringing that playoff magic….

by Link_Gaetz on Mar 2, 2010 9:22 PM EST up reply actions

Agreed. PIT needed help at the wing for sure, and Poni is one of the best available right now. And he doesn’t even have to be that good to succeed on that roster.

Also, not that you can put too much into +/-, but Ponikarovsky has been a + player every year since the lockout for the Leafs. Which is saying something.

by Link_Gaetz on Mar 2, 2010 9:24 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, at the very least he’s not going to be a defensive liability. Poni and Leopold are definitely nice upgrades for PIT. GMGM has to do something.

I feel like he is going to. I mean, is there any team in better position to make a move to win it all now? No way. Cap room. Picks. Prospects. It will boggle my mind if he doesn’t go after a defenseman.

by Link_Gaetz on Mar 2, 2010 9:28 PM EST up reply actions

Count me among those starting to get nervous. The Devils and now the Pens have both made big upgrades. Yes, you have to give something to get something but it doesn’t seem like the Pens are exactly mortgaging the farm on these upgrades and if McPhee doesn’t have an answer then I’ll be extremely disappointed.

by Kolzilla on Mar 2, 2010 10:59 PM EST up reply actions

Well, the Pens didn’t have much of a farm to mortgage. They only have two high end prospects (I don’t consider Caputi high end) and a first round pick. That was about the extent of their farm. So no, they didn’t sell it, but they aren’t in a great spot with prospects either.

by Rob Parker on Mar 2, 2010 11:07 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, I looked at their farm system last year.

They are not in good shape. WB/S plays well as a team; however, none of them are really gonna do well except for like 3 of them (Caputi included, he may plateau though).

Alot of their youngins are on the nhl squad and plenty of their drafts have been sub par

I think WBS is also a very veteran laden team, especially their key contributors. I don’t think they have a full line of prospects lighting it up like HER. Dupres is in the Q right now and he looks like their answer to Alzner.

Well they’ve got a good amount of younger players; however, they dont produce like at all.
You are right that the team is full of veterans though.
