First film of the evening was Sherlock Holmes. It was much better than I expected. I had heard poor reviews, but I liked it a lot. Once again Robert Downey Jr. was awesome. He’s really resurrected his career in a big way; he plays that role really well. Jude Law was also very good. I also thought the credits were really cool.
The next movie up is The Spirit. Probably the move on my list with the worst reviews. I’d switch to watching Franklyn instead, but The Spirit is already loaded. I figure my expectations are so low there’s no way this movie can be a let down. And if it sucks, oh well, I just used an hour and a half of free time, of which I have a plethora.
I have to go. But if I find one single dog hair when I get back, I'll rub... sand... in your dead little eyes. I also need you to buy sand. I don't know if they grade it, but... coarse.

Just finished The Spirit. Definitely not what I expected, far more slapstick and ridiculous. But it works out, because that’s really the kind of movie I was in the mood for. By no means a great movie, but I still enjoyed it. And still love that style of filming.

I watched Shelock Holmes on the plane to Orlando this past weekend and thoroughly enjoyed it. I like that they’ve set it up for a potential franchise and [SPOILER ALERT] subtly introduced the Moriarty character. Man, was I into those books when I was in middle school!

I had heard mixed reviews but I liked it a lot too. I thought maybe it was because I didn’t have a background in Holmes really, but I guess Scott in Shaw kind of disproves that idea.

Anybody else go to the Muse show last night? My fourth time seeing them over the last 6 years or so, and to be honest I wasn’t that excited going in but ho-ly shit it was by far the most visually stunning concert I’ve ever been to. And of course they rocked everyones face off.

that was crap. Also was the worst of the 4 shows (not bad, just not as awesome) that i’ve seen. First time I saw them was at the Electric Factory in Philly in 04 I think. Last night was my second time seeing them at Mason, but it was far and away the best performance. Your wife NEEDS to catch a show on this tour.

yeah but my girlfriend had bought us tickets as a Christmas present before the Baltimore show was announced. I think it was added since the Mason shwo sold out in 2 hours.

Pretty much the same with me, bought early. Silver Spring to Baltimore would have been easier. The intro/stage and opening of Resistance was worth it to me though!
Silver Spring to B’more would have been easier getting home, but I work in Falls Church so going to Mason wasn’t too bad for getting there.

Growing up in Richmond in the early ‘90s I got to see a lot of the Braves’ young guys come up through the system, so I did like Atlanta, especially when they were perennially almost winning titles.
My interest in baseball as a whole subsided, especially with the markets being so uneven and the lack of competition top to bottom, so hockey and football took over. I wouldn’t really categorize myself as a Braves’ fan anymore, but I guess I still feel warmly to them.
I could totally understand those that do not like them though.
Wayne Gretzky had it wrong: 100% of the shots Gary Roberts doesn't take DO go in.
I grew up a Reds fan back in the days when only 4 teams made the playoffs, there were several years the Reds would win 90+ games, often finishing better than the winner of the old NL west, and would not make the playoffs.
Aim for the head baby Jesus
That sucks.
But as much as only a few teams make the playoffs, the same ones win, the same ones lose, and the same ones are in the middle.
Kind of like the NBA too, where you can, with very high confidence, name the Finals matchup before the season even begins.
Maybe that’s why I like hockey. There are top teams and you see the good organizations usually go far, but in any given Spring an 8 seed could beat a #1, #7’s usually seem to be a #2. and those teams can go far too.
Wayne Gretzky had it wrong: 100% of the shots Gary Roberts doesn't take DO go in.
NBA’s predictability, poor officiating, guaranteed contracts, inferiority to their minor league product all make the league pathetic. (Full disclosure, this was all a bit more bearable when the Wizards were relevant.)
Hockey’s thing is that it’s playoffs are awesome! Unpredictability in the playoffs and no gimmick makes epic series. Much as you guys broke our hearts, hockey had an early round series that lived up to billing and we have to thank the Pens for that.
Regular season is ambivalent, though and like baseball probably has too many games. (Ducking out of the way of rocks.) It bothers me that the hockey’s regular season game is so different from it’s postseason game and the three point game is a joke.

(Full disclosure, this was all a bit more bearable when theWizardsBullets were relevant.)
They’ve never been relevant since Abe renamed the team. Of course, he did the rename and picked the colors after he saw the Caps selling oodles of merchandise with the Blue, Black and Bronze colors…
Let's go Caps!
Perhaps I should put somewhat relevant. I liked Caron Butler a lot and coming close to eliminating the Cavaliers from the playoffs to me qualifies as at least somewhat relevant.
I believe Abe could see the future. Could you imagine the Wizards situation right now if they were named the Bullet and Gilbert had pulled his shenanigans?
erskine has scored...now i can die in peace
well that was the thing, the Reds had a cheap (and racist) owner and a small market, but more history than any team not wearing pinstripes, and they managed to stay competitive pretty much every year into the mid 90’s, with the one World Series in 1990.
Aim for the head baby Jesus
The biggest problem with baseball is that there are too many franchises with no chance entering the year at all. How do you root for the Royals or the Pirates and maintain your sanity? What’s your status as a fan now of the Reds?
erskine has scored...now i can die in peace
well the Royals and Pirates have been horrible mismanaged. Being a Reds fan is hard, and I haven’t been a fan of the management, but the Chapman signing proved that they are willing to spend money, and take the kind of risks it takes to win in a small market
Aim for the head baby Jesus
That’s good. Forgot about Chapman and have to give them some credit. Do you think the Pirates are turning a corner with their young outfield or are they perpetually doomed? I thought that both teams made out well in the Morgan/Milledge swap.
erskine has scored...now i can die in peace
The Pirates are doomed. This I know enough to know. As always, they have some good talented young players, but they’re not major league ready. Gonna be another long summer up there, at least the stadium is nice.
Wayne Gretzky had it wrong: 100% of the shots Gary Roberts doesn't take DO go in.
Of course, like the Nats they’re doomed in wins and losses. The thing is do they have some kind of strategy that provides hope for the early adopters like the Caps had when they sold their rebuild? Or do they just trust that history, stadium, and revenue sharing will turn a profit for the rubes foolish enough to come through the turnstile? Got to believe that Pittsburgh fans of the Steelers and Penguins are too demanding to tolerate garbage in their market and it seems to me that the Pirates should be able to spend more and accomplish more.
In baseball, so much of it is whether you’re spending money in the draft and with international signings. I’m as pleased with the Nats for signing this Mexican reliever they got for about 400K plus than I am for nobrainer Strasburg which any idiot franchise could do.
erskine has scored...now i can die in peace
Fuck the Reds for causing the Nats to lose out on Chapman.
Game-Over Green? Canada-Over Carlson!
by Scott in Shaw on Mar 2, 2010 3:57 PM EST up reply actions
I don’t think the Nats were ever so serious about Chapman. High end free agents and high profile guys aren’t their style yet. They like to bid to get their names in the market and maybe drive the price up a little and get in good with some agents but their not purchasers if there’s competition for a target. Don’t have a real problem with that at this stage in their development. Now if their rotation comes together like they claim and their still passive in ‘12 then I’ll have a problem.
erskine has scored...now i can die in peace
I disagree. It sounds like the Nats made a serious offer of around $23-25M, which a lot of people thought would have gotten it done. No one expected anyone to offer $30M, so kudos (and fuck you) to the Reds.

But that’s our move. Stan offers fair value, does budge, and lives with the chips as they fall. The way they wanted O-Dog but settled for Kennedy (who is a clone of Belliard statistically) is typical of how they role. Basically you end up with whatever we got out of the Belliard trade and less weight drama. Not sexy stuff but sound. This upcoming draft is going to really be key for the franchise. They have to pick the right number one and show that without the Strasburg contract on top they are not as locked into signability picks. Still, Potomac has been fun for games and I really hope my work situation improves enough for me to be a frequent denizen of Nats Park. Went to about 20 games or so last year plus maybe 10-15 minor league games.
erskine has scored...now i can die in peace
This would probably be the one justifiable reason to like the Braves. They seem to have a lot of home grown talent and that does build pride on one’s squad.
Baseball for me is attractive because big money teams can be a Public Enemy and there have been enough success from small market teams like Florida, Tampa Bay, Minnesota, and Oakland to give hope to teams that build the right way and enough big time flops like the Mets to caution those who think it’s simply spending your way to victory.
Likewise, minor league accessibility and transparency is really one of the best thing that baseball has to offer. Being able to follow Jordan Zimmermann at Potomac and watch him show so much at DC last year is really gratifying and rewards patience. We’re also blessed in DC with a solid minor league blog NatsFarmAuthority to help sort through things.
Hooks, the reason that you’re hearing the call. Come to the Nats. Richmond was closer to DC anyway and would have been your team had they existed, right?
erskine has scored...now i can die in peace

Deliberately left Strasburg off the list. Strasburg is like LeBron come to baseball and he’s not the reason that I’m a fan of the Nats. It’s a nice for baseball and it’s good for the squad. It will be real interesting to see where Strasburgh lands. Harrisburgh is cold. Potomac is totally and utterly unequipped to handle the media crush that will come for his starts. Contrast Pfizner with Frederick for stadium experience and it’s no contest. The Nats should be justifiably embarassed to have their premier prospect in a dump of the Carolina League stadium. Harrisburg just completed some renovations. Do they know something we don’t know?
erskine has scored...now i can die in peace
I’ve heard 4-5 starts at each location and then straight from double to the bigs is the most likely path right now
Aim for the head baby Jesus
Agreed with that but you’ve got to believe that things are on hold until we see how he does in the spring. If he murders people in Spring Training maybe he starts at Harrisburg. Cold weather vs. bad stadium becomes an issue but I’ve got to believe that Rizzo and company are pretty pragmatic about being willing to have him pay some dues in Potomac. It’s a low A ballpark experience in high A.
erskine has scored...now i can die in peace
I’ve read that he’ll likely start Potomac’s opening game. Five days before that is…Nats vs. Red Sox in an exhibition at Nats Park…

I went to a few games in the new stadium it’s first season, but to be honest I don’t think I even went to a single game in 2009.
I’ll never have more than a passing interest in baseball. If the Nats continue to develop they may catch my eye a little more, but as far as that sport goes, can’t see it catching on for me too much (especially considering how hockey compressed my life is).
Wayne Gretzky had it wrong: 100% of the shots Gary Roberts doesn't take DO go in.
I tend to look at my fandom as a bit of a portfolio. Teams that have credible strategies in my home market earn my investment of time. Nats suck now but are sensible when you take the time to get to know the farm. Baseball a lot of it is do you find the ballpark experience therapeutic or not. Hockey’s cathartic. Baseball’s therapeutic. I need both in my life.
Football and basketball are on notice although I do still follow the Hoyas out of historical loyalty and intrigue with how their system applies to the college game.

McPhail is doing things the right way by building back up the whole system. Going to take time, but I’m glad the days of paying over the hill, overpriced free agents appears to be gone. Not to say McPhail hasn’t and won’t make mistakes, but overall I’m pleased with him at the helm.
"You ever use smelling salts, every time you type a bad blog?" Brooks Laich
Yeah, from everything I hear Angelos has been more hands off and let baseball guys run the team, which is good. But the poor management of the Orioles is only part of the reason for my steadily declining interest in baseball. The bigger reason has to do with the ridiculous uneven competitive structure of the sport that Hooks mentioned.
