Third Period Open Thread
Nothing like an end-of-the-period goal to give the good guys a little momentum - or should we say, "Joe"-mentum? Get it? Because it was scored by Joe Co-...yeah. Anyway. Third period ahead.

The pass from Backstrom was so pretty, I’m going to take it behind the middle school and get it pregnant.

haha nice
"Hey anyway I can get my name out there 30 years from now is great," Steckel said. "They will be like, ‘Who was that guy?’ Then they’ll look at the stats and say, ‘Well, at least that guy was really good on face-offs.’"
So that pass is the proud inspiration of a dumpster baby?
/I hope everyone noticed how out of position E. Staal was on that play.
Killer_Carlson and Steckel Me Elmo are like brothers to me. And when I say brothers I don't mean like actual brothers. I mean it like how black people use it, which is more meaningful, I think.
When Poti and Staal are on the ice at the same time, and Staal scores after a terrible play by Poti, do you want to die?
Not really. I go look and see it’s his… 22nd goal on the year and I laugh.

Not at all…although the lack of dominant shifts with Flash replacing Ovie on the top line is noticeable.
by Davethecapsfan on Mar 18, 2010 8:47 PM EDT up reply actions
Not too much…he just doesn’t seem to fit as well with Lars and Knubs. Anytime he ends up with the puck down low he loses the battle and turns it over it seems. Ovie can do the puck possession game with this back to the goal…Flash has issues with it.

I'm just waiting
for the Backstrom > Crosby debate to begin. It’s on the cusp.
Obstreperously Avatarless
not this year
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
Yet another reason why Crosby vs Ovechkin is a moronic debate. I always see the comparison as Ovechkin:Malkin :: Crosby:Backstrom.
Malkin is the slightly less talented version of Ovie (albeit as a center) – power forward, big body, hell of a shot, great goal-scoring ability. Backstrom is the slightly less talented version of Crosby – playmaker, great vision, tough to push off the puck.
Disagree, a little. Ovechkin is leaps and bounds the best player at his position. Crosby, Malkin, and Backstrom are all close, but in the top 5 in theirs.
I should have saved my old signature. Oh well!
Well, I’m not going strictly by position here – I’m talking about playing styles, and I’ve always thought the really interesting contrast was Ovechkin and Malkin. They both play that more physical, offensive style.
And it was more of a compare/contrast, not a “this guy is the best ever” kind of comment. Just brain drippings from me :P
Slightly less talented than Crosby...
I’m seriously starting to doubt that sentiment.
Obstreperously Avatarless
Well, maybe slightly less talented was the wrong phrase – a few years behind him on the development curve, perhaps? After all (as we all know) Sid started in the NHL at 18, Nicky stayed in Sweden an extra year and took a bit longer to find his game.
But Backstrom gets better every year. I don’t think it’s a stretch to say they’ll be sharing the title of best center in the league in the near future.
It won’t be a loud one…even without Ovie in the lineup, he still has better wingers to play with than Sid does.

Eh, I’ve lost one of my final four picks, and for some reason it saved mine as taking OSU instead of Kansas, which infuriates me.

Good guess. I knew it would be a mistake and wrong, but I also figured anyone could come out of that region, and why not look really good if it worked?

Plus, I don’t think anyone guessed ODU would limit Luke Harangody to 4 points.

Having the right-handed shot balance helped a bit…but there is no denying Carlson is more NHL ready right now in my opinion. I think Alzner could be a top 6 right now with more time up here…but it’s a numbers crunch. That “too many men on the ice” penalty the Caps had gotten when Green had scored (but was waved off) was the real momentum changer. If someone (I couldn’t figure out who) hadn’t gone on the ice too soon, the Caps would have been up 2-0 and the game would have been much different.
Rocking the Red since 1975
Tough to say, this game was very heavily influenced by the refs.
Usually, I would say that the refs are gonna make calls both ways, just gotta play through. However, they put away their whistles at some point, brought them back out for horrible calls, drew back a goal with a questionable call.
The 5 near goals in OT kinda hurt, but the trip on Backstrom was worse
Bah-Ram-Ewe, Ovechkin will wreck you. Fear the Furious Fleece!
I don’t think this game was that heavily influenced by refs. Both of our no-goals were legit non-goals, I can see an argument for the Shamo high stick that lead to the 5 on 3, I mean, it wasn’t as poorly officiated as we want to see it. The Backstrom trip missed, yeah, I get it, but you put the whistle away in OT.

Flash shouldn’t skate top line minutes or with top line players. Put him back on the third with Morrison and Fehr, and I’m happy.
I should have saved my old signature. Oh well!
I agree, except:
Ovechkin – Backstrom – Knuble
Laich – Morrison – Semin
Fehr – Belanger – Flash
Chimera – Steckel – Bradley/Walker
Is a better team than forcing Chimera to the third line because he’s a great third liner. He’s solid anywhere on the bottom two lines.
I should have saved my old signature. Oh well!
agreed. kinda forgot the lines were twisted tonight cuz of ovi’s absence, altho watching chimera get the opportunity to move his legs on the third line is a huge treat. he is so damn fast its scary
I like Chimera a ton – as noted, I usually traded for him in NHL 09 and NHL 10, but Fehr – Center – Flash is too solid a third line to force Chimera into it, especially since you’re likely displacing Fehr since this is Boudreau.

Plus Varly seems to run out of gas during the third period. As usual.
Should we call up Braden Holtby? (Naw, let the tenders battle each other in training camp next year.
We hereby declare Jose Theodore as our #1 goalie — by default.

Yeah but the D really let him down. He can’t stand on his head and bail everybody out like he did in the playoffs.

for whatever its worth, we’ve allowed as many goals as pitt has this season, but for some reason nobody thinks we can play solid d…
I guess Pittsburgh’s D is weak also. Guess they won’t be going any where in the playoffs this year either.

their #1 goalie is weak, too!

Just the other day, someone wrote that no team had ever won the cup with no shutouts during the regular season, and that PIT hadn’t had one yet. I want to beat that person over the head. Thanks.
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
If they ruled out all teams that have either a) No Defense and b) A Goalie who isn’t stellar, the following teams would be ruled out: Pittsburgh, Washington, Philadelphia. Which would mean we’re left with Ottawa, Montreal, NJ, Buffalo, and Boston. Among these teams, we figure that a team whose Goals for is less than (or barely more than) is not going deep in the playoffs, which would eliminate Ottawa, Montreal, and Boston. Which leaves NJ and Buffalo as the teams with the best chance of going deep.

You can get hot in the playoffs, but I’d argue last years POS P-burghs defense really stepped up. But yeah, one hot playoff season doesn’t make him a top 5 goalie.

Remembering back. . .I feel like the defense contributed more during our series, while MAF just performed some highway robbery against Detroit (with a good Defense still)
Ohh yeah, quite a few positions out of top 5. . .maybe not top 10. ..but i’d have to go through a goalie list.
The only problem is, and one of the biggest things i am afraid of come play off time (and i think the most dangerous thing we can encounter come spring time) is a smokin hot goalie, and Miller, Brodeur, and Fleury can do it

I didn’t see the game, but how hard is it to be “great” against Boston? Talk about a team with no offense. They’re absolutely dead last in goals per game, but rank 10th in shots per game.

He can do some damage this post season, as well. Last year, if we remember correctly, he got “pronged” in the shoulder in Game 1 of the Pitt series and was out for the rest of the playoffs. And then it turned out he had two bad shoulders and needed surgery. (He had played really well last Feb before what was probably the first of the shoulder injuries.)
Rocking the Red since 1975
This Capitals Insider update says the first injury was dec 23 after hitting an un-padded turnbuckle in Toronto, and then bothered him the rest of the season. And then in Game 1 injury. Sigh

Ah, one of those, eh? Kind of like the Montreal loss real early in the year when the Caps were clearly better, but with one thing and another couldn’t get a bunch of goals, then screwed the pooch on D a couple times?

It was a good game. . Refs blew nuts. . .Offense was generating a TONNN of chances. . .
Flash played a good game, just needs to finish. When he starts finishing, we will have a lot more goals.
Fehr continues to earn his ice time (if only) and bigger portions of my heart
Backstrom did his usual “Jesus” stuff. Making ridiculous passes with out looking, skating through an entire defense, making bitches look stupid, babies cry, then smile cause they realize they were just blessed. You know, the normal stuff.
Knuble played well, generated alot of chances in his office, got knicked for some rly bad offsides calls (1 or 2) and had a bad holding penalty.
Belanger showed that he is a good fit for the team, but should not be on the PP, but we knew that. . .and i bet he did too.
Corvo is getting his game. . .or maybe just trying to show off his new girlfriend to his ex.
Green showed us what Yzerman saw. . .but not rly, cause he’s still better than Seabrook and Campbell and Weber
Varlamov tended a good goal, but got left out to dry by the team a few times. . .should have stopped that last one (/snark). Still Theo’s to lose.
Carlson had another great game, nothing bad, only good things. What a man.
Laich looked snakebit, but moved the puck very, very well
Chimera earned hours and hours and hours of shoot out drills. Man’s got rocket fuel in his veins. . .but also has snakey venom

yay :D
As far as the refs go, i understand the 2 goals they pulled back. Hell, i can see their logic with their 4 minute penalty on Shamo. And ok, Fehr and Shamo out cause of questionable calls. .
Then they made a few BS calls, one horrid call on Knuble, missed some blatant, and i mean blatant, slashing and interference calls. Then the linesman, and i counted, called something like 4 offsides in which we werent rly offsides. VERY whistle happy. SO imagine my surprise, when Lars fights for the puck, gets it, rdy to charge down the ice in OT, and gets completely taken down from behind, and there is no call. 8 seconds later, the Wizard scores.

I could totally see SJS getting knocked out by detroit first round. it fits their curse, and Detroit has not had a regular season that is representative of their playoff talent
it would also please Detroit to finally pay back San Jose from all those years ago when Detroit was #1 and got bounced by SJS.

Montreal has actually been the hottest team lately. Even though I don’t think they’re all that great but……..
