is the Warden hurt?

I haven’t heard anything but the last few games I’ve seen with Carolina have had Peters in net.

Hope the Caps play the same way they did in Florida, crowding the crease scoring goals in tight.

Also if you’re interested, my mobile fantasy picks are (Who else?) Semin and Green.

by DrinkingPartner on Mar 18, 2010 7:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Legace and Peters have been playing, as Ward is out with a back injury I think. He’s supposed to start practicing a little again this week or next week.

I don’t really mind not facing him. He’s as good as it gets when he’s on his game.

I agree, that’s why I don’t mind and also found it a little weird not seeing him in the line up this past week.

Is Peters any good? I don’t believe I’ve ever seen him in action.

Peters looked pretty good beating the Pens last week. Made almost 40 saves, looked pretty athletic, and had a game-saving stop on Dupuis down the stretch. I haven’t watched him much, though. He can’t play any better than Manny Legace did against us, can he?

by OvechKam on Mar 18, 2010 5:20 PM EDT up reply actions

It’s the Caps. I wouldn’t put it past him. We can make anyone look like an all-star. Thanks for the info. though.

I just like that speed Chimmer brings, and in those couple of shift he played the top line he looked damned good.

"Why don't you smegging well smeg off, you annoying little smeggy smegging smegger!"

by SethB on Mar 18, 2010 5:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Building chemistry on the 3rd line is more important than letting Chimmer play with Backstrom.

You had me at no problem.

by Ninjak on Mar 18, 2010 5:56 PM EDT up reply actions

And that third line had chemistry. Maintaining that chemistry is more important than forcing Flash into the lineup. Those 3 play a simple game and Flash doesn’t quite fit with them. Let Flash be the AHL Ovechkin on the top line for now, but let’s see if we can’t get the 2-3 lines clicking for the playoffs. If Flash is the odd man out, he’s the odd man out. Unfortunately, I have no doubt that BB disagrees.

Killer_Carlson and Steckel Me Elmo are like brothers to me. And when I say brothers I don't mean like actual brothers. I mean it like how black people use it, which is more meaningful, I think.

by Fehr and Balanced on Mar 18, 2010 6:02 PM EDT up reply actions

As much as Flash is BB’s boy and seems to be bulletproof, he still belongs somewhere in the top 9 without a doubt.

Having said that, I still have no idea what the lines will look like. My guess is Chimera gets demoted if B.Mo is part of the playoff roster.

by JSchon on Mar 18, 2010 6:12 PM EDT up reply actions

The problem is that we have 7 wingers who belong in the top 9.

Even atheists believe in Matt Wieters

by wickedwitch on Mar 18, 2010 6:14 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree, but if that third line keeps dominating the puck and scoring goals how do you break them up? Flash is good but he’s not really a playoff player and I don’t think he should be guaranteed a playoff spot.

Killer_Carlson and Steckel Me Elmo are like brothers to me. And when I say brothers I don't mean like actual brothers. I mean it like how black people use it, which is more meaningful, I think.

by Fehr and Balanced on Mar 18, 2010 6:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Are you asking me? I think you and I kinda have the same opinion on players.

I wouldn’t break up the 3rd line.

by JSchon on Mar 18, 2010 6:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, we do. It just pisses me off preemptively that Flash will end up breaking up that third line. Of course, if that line loses its magic then that’s one thing, but they deserve a few games together to show us what they got.

Killer_Carlson and Steckel Me Elmo are like brothers to me. And when I say brothers I don't mean like actual brothers. I mean it like how black people use it, which is more meaningful, I think.

by Fehr and Balanced on Mar 18, 2010 6:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Me too

That third line is exactly what you want from a Championship quality playoff third line: speed, physicality, net-crashing, forechecking, defensive responsibility.

Fleischmann brings none of those qualities.

by CaStauch on Mar 18, 2010 6:52 PM EDT up reply actions

I sometimes wonder if Flash’s problem is is that he burns out each year due to all the health problems. Last year, he was sick so was too weak to do much the second half of the year. This summer, he could not do as much conditioning due to the deep vein thrombosis.

It seemed that he benefited from a night off.

Rocking the Red since 1975

by CapsFan75 on Mar 18, 2010 6:56 PM EDT up reply actions

He belongs in the top 9 on some team, but it may not be this one if the most effective line combos are 8/19/22, 21/(Belanger, 18?)/28, 25/9/16.

Flash is more skilled than some of those guys, but if that’s the most effective total combination, how can you not roll with it?

Only YOU can prevent idiots from commenting!

Two more Caps prospects in playoff games tonight. Dmitry Kugryshev and the Remparts play the Acadie-Bathurst Titan, and Stefan Della Rovere and the Barrie Colts take on the Sudbury Wolves.

Puck drops at 7 for both of thse games as well.

Digging the prospects and monitoring their development is what separates bandwagon organizations from true hockey fan bases. There’s a very prominent Nationals prospect Michael Burgess who Does.Not.Get.It. But there’s not much accountability within and without the organization so far for him. You hope things are different with the Caps organization and Delly is part of the solution.

Highschooler draft pick != a 4-year major juniors vet who is the captain of his team and 2-time national team medalist.

This statement of mine didn’t make it into the article, but maybe the reporter told him when they talked:

Advice to SDR: The Caps’ organization loves winners, gym rats, and ‘good locker room guys’. So keep up the winning, be in the best shape you can possibly be, hone your skills, and be a generally great person. Somehow I think it may work out.

Hopefully he can get it back together and live up to his potential. Also heard he had lost some weight over the winter as well.

by souldrummer on Mar 18, 2010 6:38 PM EDT up reply actions

My view: we know for a fact that varly is better than Theo. We also know that were the Caps lucky enough to ride Theo to the cup, he’d be one of the weakest goalies to do so in recent memory. That’s not to say it’s impossible (osgood never was much of a goalie, fleury is good but certainly not great), but mediocre goalkeeping is a hindrance not a help. Varly’s shown the low end of greatness in his first 30 NHL games. That’s a good sample size that includes the playoffs. We know he can play at that level.

What we need is for Varly to get a lot of reps in these last few weeks to get back into form. Anything else is a waste of time.

by CarlosLA on Mar 18, 2010 6:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Varly is more talented and younger than Theo, but he is not the better of the two right now. If he gets back to his normal form, then that’s great for the Caps, because it means they have two capable goalies. But to me, if Theo keeps playing the way he is, he’ll be the one in the playoffs, until he falters. Theo’s goaltending lately has been good to great, not mediocre. If he goes back to his mediocre form, that’s a different story. But the way things are going right now, we would not be riding a mediocre goalie to the Cup. We would not be riding one of the best in the business either. If Theo is playing the way he has been and we can’t win the Cup, it’s not going to be because of bad goaltending.

Thornton won and kept punching after Cooke went down. Cooke was none too happy about it.

Yeah you have to expect that. You know Thornton wants to inflict as much punishment as possible. BSH was upset about some late punches earlier in the week, but I think that part of the code is all but dead.
