Playoff Lines

As the playoffs near I have been mentally trying to figure out the lines that Boudreau will go with...

These are the ones that I would like to see come April with asterisk's behind the guys I think must get a jersey

Star-divide

 Ovie*  Backstrom* Knuble*

Laich* Belanger* Semin*

Fehr* Morrison* Fleishmann*

Chimera* Steckel* Bradley*

So all those guys I think if healthy deserve to play

Green* Shultz*

Corvo* Poti*

Shamo Carlson

-----

Jurchina would be great to have but only if he's in game shape and Erskine is in waiting if any extra toughness is needed

Theo

Varly

in that order unless varly starts standing on his head, starting tonight!

I really dont like that second line as much as I do with flash in the middle, but we got belanger to play 2nd line center and thats what hes got to do. Semin is a significantly lesser player when he always has to go win the puck.

Morrison hopefully will step his game up. He's the type of player that will depict our success. Backs and Ovie will do their thing, but if morrison can ignite that third line it would make a huge difference in the series. I like chimera and fehr on the same line but the problem their is Flash. If he can't play 2nd line center than he has to get pushed back to the 3rd line because you can't drop either semin or brooks and that in turn drops chimera down another rung, leaving fehr to play a 3rd line version of brooks and flash to take semin's role on the same line. with morrison in the middle and if they click they could dominate other third lines.

Let me know what you think, please leave your line ups below. i'd love to see what everyone else is thinking.

Personally, I don’t think Belanger or BMo have done anything to say that they definitely deserve a playoff sweater if healthy. I think the lines right now (when Ovie and Gordon are back) are basically what I would go with, assuming no one (like BMo) goes on a hot streak down the stretch.

Ovie – Backstrom – Knuble
Laich – Flash – Semin
Chimera – Belanger/BMo – Fehr
Gordon – Steckel – Bradley

I’d probably just keep going with the hot hand at #3 center, with the possibility of one of them moving up if flash isn’t getting it done at #2C.

D and goalies I agree with, including who is and isn’t “guaranteed” a sweater each night.

Here’s what I would do:

AO – Backs – Knuble
Laich – Belanger – Semin
Chimera – BMo – Fehr
Gordo – Stecks – Brads(assuming Gordo is healthy; if not, then Walker)

Scratches: Flash, Bradley, Laing

Why scratch Flash? He can’t play center; not enough defense, not enough faceoff skill. He doesn’t play enough defense to play on a checking or energy line. Laich and AO are better than him for the Top 6 LW positions.

What I think will happen is that BB will start with 3rd and 4th lines like this:

Flash – BMo – Fehr
Chimera – Stecks – Bradley

Agree both that Flash seems the hardest to find a spot for, and that those will be the actual 3rd and 4th lines.

by psuscott1 on Mar 18, 2010 4:06 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t get why you play Gordon at all over Flash. He doesn’t bring enough to the table to offset someone who can produce offense.

Actually, I don’t get that you could play Gordon over Walker either.

And just because he’s hard to find a spot for shouldn’t make him an auto scratch.

I should have saved my old signature. Oh well!

I think that the skillset Flash brings and what we want in the lineup means, well, he’s out, since the top-6 should be a done deal and we want a speedy third line with a defensively responsible/physical fourth line. Flash doesn’t fit into the last two lines and because of that may end up a liability instead of a bonus.

I’d put Walker over Gordon but I like that lineup. Flash can fill in for Semin once Semin gets hurt.

Killer_Carlson and Steckel Me Elmo are like brothers to me. And when I say brothers I don't mean like actual brothers. I mean it like how black people use it, which is more meaningful, I think.

Then Bushwood, where do you keep Flash? I think he changes the dynamic of the 3rd or 4th line if there, and would only fit on the 2nd line, on which he can’t play since he’s not good enough to be a center (maybe for a game or two a la Sloan on D) and there are better options on wing.

If Juice is in game shape does he play? And who sits if he’s in?

/he might not be game-ready ’til late in the second round, is my guess.

KNtaD at least before wrote that Carlson could hit the rookie wall by the end of the second round. Sounds like the perfect time for Juice to come back.

i feel like juice is there for injury relief…hopefully he won’t need to be ready by the second round, but you never know

FLASH! He shoots, he scores - 22.9% of the time, anyway

by flashfangirl on Mar 18, 2010 7:29 PM EDT up reply actions

i think gordo's injury

is unfortunately not as much of a negative as an injured player otherwise would be. i do want the lines to be cemented somewhere here in the next week. I concur carlson might have a lapse in the playoffs, much like shultz did last year. the good thing is that GMGM has built depth with erskine and juice to counteract that. I really want Theo to play well this playoffs. he has had such a rough year and has handled it like such a man and with such class. his house is the place the team gathered to watch the olympics, this could be his year.

I dont like the way belanger plays, with our second line quit yet, i feel the caps have a uniquely different philosophy of playing that takes new acquistions awhile to be comfortable with.

Schultzy’s ‘lapse’ was one hundred per cent injury related. he broke a rib in Game One, tried to play through it, couldn’t.

Last year, the “fourth line” got more minutes than the “third line.” Perhaps the answer, in order of playing time, is:

Ovechkin – Backstrom – Knuble
Fleischmann – Belanger – Semin
Laich – Steckel – Bradley
Chimera – Morrison – Fehr

Only thing is that I don’t like the lack of physicality on that second line. I would like Laich-Steckel-Bradley reunited for a little while though to see if they can play as well as last postseason. I dunno, maybe swap Walker and Bradley, since I think Walker can bring what Bradley does plus a little more O.

Flash is going to be in the line up. You do know the coach is Bruce Boudreau, right?

Also, he’s a hell of a lot better than you think.

Yes, no question Flash is in the lineup.

Who is better than I think, Flash? I’m not really buying it (though I don’t see where you got that idea). I think Flash fits best as a PP/2nd line type player. At 2C, he looks good, but when the team isn’t playing well it hurts since he’s not as good on draws as some other options and not as good two-ways as the alternatives. At 2LW, well, he might be able to get that, but then who is going to go to the net on that line? And 2RW is Semin’s spot which Flash could take if Semin gets too hurt to play.

I am not fighting for him to be on the second line, but I think a third line of Flash – Center – Fehr is pretty amazing. Flash/Fehr have some chemistry for some reason, and Chimera is just as good on the fourth as the 3rd. There’s no rule that our third line has to be this crazy grind line, and 3 lines who can score is probably more helpful than 2 who can score and two who are just “Tie up the other team, please”.

If Chimera could score on a breakaway, I might feel different.

Third line should be the line in the playoffs that can really light it up. All things considered, most teams they’ll be facing have 2 competent checking lines that they can throw out against our top 2. Eventually the pressure they’ll hopefully create will give us a chance to put the 1st out there against weak defensive competition.

by sydtron on Mar 22, 2010 9:55 AM EDT up reply actions

You could go down the line. Pittsburgh is two scoring lines, a hybrid, and a checking line. New Jersey is one scoring line, three trapping lines. Buffalo is one scoring line, a hybrid, two checking lines. I mean, few teams have the skillset our team has as far as being able to throw out three scoring lines, as well as a fourth line that could potentially put a goal in here and there.

Evgeny Kuznetsov hams it up as he joins the Russia men's national team for the "Sweden Games" leg of the Euro Hockey Tour in Helsinki, Finland.

There's a bit of controversy as their game against the Finns is scheduled to be played in Helsinki's outdoor Olympic Stadium. Where the daytime temps are currently approximately minus-15 degrees Celsius, with periodic heavy snow.

This interview with head coach Zinetula Bilyaletdinov is fascinating, as he frets about the weather and especially when the reporters press him on the leaked reports that Kuznetsov will be centering the top line for Team Russia, just weeks after his 20th birthday.
