Your savory breakfast links:

  • Previews of tonight's game against Carolina from Vogs, Peerless, CSN Washington and NHL.com, and be sure to check out our SB Nation partner Canes Country for coverage from the other side of tonight's match up.
  • To refresh your memory, this is the fifth meeting of the season between the Caps and 'Canes, with the Caps taking three of the first four (by 4-3, 4-3 and 3-2 counts against a 6-3 loss).
  • Notes from yesterday's practice in Raleigh (basically, Boyd Gordon was sent back to D.C. with a bad back, Semyon Varlamov is tonight's likely starter, and Bruce Boudreau talks Ovi). [CI, CI, CI]
  • Brooks Laich continues to win at life. [D.C. Sports Bog]
  • We all know that Brendan Morrison has had his ups and downs this year, but has he ever been the subject of such a cheesily-titled article? [WaPo]
  • The Caps have two of the top three lines in hockey. OK, fine, they have the second-best line in hockey and two different right-wings they can play in on it (though not at the same time). [TSN]
  • Word's getting out on Nicklas Backstrom. [THN, Corey Masisak (just in case you missed it yesterday)]
  • Yes, Alex Ovechkin boarded Brian Campbell four days ago. Yes, Alex Ovechkin was suspended for that hit three days ago (Colin Campbell, by the way, discussed his rationale for the suspension yesterday). And yet, thoughts on the incident and the superstar keep rolling in as people take the time to rehash what has been said and/or come up with something more outrageously dumb than what was out there. [Sportsnet (ridiculous), Versus (absurd), SB Nation (silly), SB Nation (reasonable?), and a poll!]
  • On the Caps sans Ovi. [RtR]

  • Per the HHoF, on this date back in 1989, "Dino Ciccarelli scored four goals and added three assists to set a Washington club record with seven points, in an 8-2 Capitals' win over the Whalers at Harford. It was the 15th hat trick of Ciccarelli's NHL career and his first with Washington." Love me some Dino.
  • Finally, bunch o' birthdays today, with Jonas Johansson turning 26, Jan Bulis turning 32, Brantt Myhres turning 36 and Craig Johnson turning 38.

I don’t get how Campbell still has a job. In any other business, someone with such an unblemished record of incompetence would have been kicked to the curb a long time ago. What do people see in him? He clearly has no idea what he’s doing.

I have to go. But if I find one single dog hair when I get back, I'll rub... sand... in your dead little eyes. I also need you to buy sand. I don't know if they grade it, but... coarse.

The conflict of interest alone in having your son play in a league that you are supposed to be policing should have forced him to step down.

Suspend Colin Campbell!

by snowburnt on Mar 18, 2010 7:10 AM EDT up reply actions   2 recs

That is moronic. Campbell should step down for about 1,000 different reasons. The fact that his son plays for the Panthers is not one of them.

I think there are ways around the appearance of a conflict of interest. If he plays it right, it can actually work in his favor – making people believe ethat he genuinely cares about the players’ safety because his son is one of them.

I’m beginning to think a committee might be a better way to go, though.

My problem is Campbell hasn’t recused himself when he should have. For example, Ovechkin missed the recent game against the Panthers, who are still technically in the running for a playoff spot. That’s problematic.

by The Ghost of Bebop on Mar 18, 2010 10:54 AM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

Not that it did them one lick of good the other times they missed Ovechkin.

I agree with you, though. He probably should have recused himself in this case. The question is, where does it stop? So many questions regarding unrelated teams could still affect the Florida Panthers. Hell, for all we know, Colie could be suspending a Panther’s hookup for some sweet golf clubs and a means to get them in early April.

It’s a perception problem, and one not easily solved. The NHL is too open to these questions, though.

Hanlon's Razor: Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.

Committee composed of who? Execs/Owners/Retired players?

The fact is, the players safety is of paramount concern to the NHL as a whole, Campbell’s kid doesn’t add or detract from that in the least. I honestly don’t believe that Campbell thinks about the impact to his son or the team when he’ making decisions, but it is amazing to me that the NHL is willing to open itself to these questions.

we're not gonna allow someone like Downie to go after him.

by Sct112 on Mar 18, 2010 10:57 AM EDT up reply actions

I have to go with retired players and coaches. Who knows, a job in the discipline office might keep some of our stupider talking heads off the airwaves now and then.

Hanlon's Razor: Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.

by gotsparkly on Mar 18, 2010 11:01 AM EDT up reply actions

I agree – is there an actual conflict, probably not? You’d like to think that Campbell is objective when looking at things.

But, for me, its the fact the the NHL acknowledges that at least the appearance of a conflict exists by Cambell taking himself out of decisions to be made on games that FLA plays in. It just seems a little shortsighted to ignore the fact that the greater impact would be on games following the decision on suspensions which they ignore.

But I am coming from an industry that requires disclosure of conflicts of interest in fact and appearance.

by Ames on Mar 18, 2010 11:05 AM EDT up reply actions

If he can’t objectively look at one team, he shouldn’t be doing it for the league. I agree that there probably isn’t a conflict, but appearances matter and it isn’t a good one. The only decision someone should take himself out of is if his son specifically hits or is hit.

by kman8924 on Mar 18, 2010 11:11 AM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

And he doesn’t rule on anything dealing with the Panthers. So he wasn’t even the one who let Richards off scott free.

by RCheli on Mar 18, 2010 11:13 AM EDT up reply actions

Do we know who the responsibility even falls to?

by kman8924 on Mar 18, 2010 11:16 AM EDT up reply actions

I just Googled it:

“The hit was examined by Mike Murphy, the NHL’s hockey operations director, instead of Colin Campbell, the league’s usual dean of discipline. Campbell wanted to avoid any perceived bias because his son, Gregory, plays for the Panthers.”

That was from a philly.com article.

by RCheli on Mar 18, 2010 11:19 AM EDT up reply actions

Thanks for the info

by kman8924 on Mar 18, 2010 11:23 AM EDT up reply actions

So there’s a question. How could anyone in the office not be impacted by the fact Campbell’s son plays for the Panthers? They work with him everyday. What if it had been his kid, rather than Booth on the other end of that hit? Even recusing himself doesn’t relieve the office from being biased.

we're not gonna allow someone like Downie to go after him.

by snowburnt on Mar 18, 2010 11:19 AM EDT up reply actions

I just don’t see this as such a problem. Hell, Bud Selig — WHO OWNS THE FUCKING BREWERS — is the commissioner of MLB. (I realize he doesn’t own them now — his daughter does.) If that’s not the biggest conflict of interest in sports, I don’t know what is.

Yet when a Cubs or Cardinals or Pirates (okay, that’s a joke) player is suspended, is there an uproar?

by RCheli on Mar 18, 2010 11:28 AM EDT up reply actions

Actually, I just looked into it — neither Selig nor his daughter own the Brewers any more (selling it in 2004). But there was certainly a crossover of commissioner/owner conflict.

by RCheli on Mar 18, 2010 11:33 AM EDT up reply actions

MLB is monitored by Congress, though, because of its antitrust exemption — does that counteract the conflict? If hockey were monitored by some quasigovernmental binational body, could that solve some of the problems we see?

"Camaraderie, that's what the Washington Capitals are all about."

by CapitalCentre on Mar 18, 2010 11:36 AM EDT up reply actions

I don’t think it would — Congress has much bigger fish to fry to determine if MLB was unfair in suspending a guy for throwing at the head of a batter.

by RCheli on Mar 18, 2010 11:40 AM EDT up reply actions

Very doubtful. As RCheli noted, Congress just doesn’t care enough so it would be dominated by the Canadian Goverment and Canadian mindset.

And quite frankly I happen to think that the Canadian mindset is half the problem here to begin with.

No one on the committee should have said conflicts of interest either. If I had a conflict of interest as big as Campbell has in my profession I could go to jail.

It’s entirely unethical that he has the position he does while his son is in the league regardless of his inconsistencies and perceived incompetence.

Yup. The NHL is trying so hard to play with the big boys and move away from its small town Canada roots, but allows one of its most visible processes, one that is inherently ugly and controversial, be run by a guy who has a conflict of interest.

by Sct112 on Mar 18, 2010 11:14 AM EDT up reply actions

They fallacy of the whole “this conflict wouldn’t happen in my job” is that it’s NOT a corporation, government entity or traditional business. The fact of the matter is that it occurs in a lot of self-governing sports groups, be it the IOC, FIFA or what have you, and until there’s a forward-thinking person that’s willing to make the enterprise better, it’s going to remain what it is.

I said before and will say again, the commissioner has had two work stoppages on his watch, the PA is dysfunctional beyond any reasonable estimation (OT: Don Fehr would be GREAT for them), and moving up the headshot rule, right or wrong, is likely to be seen as a league win. Barring a PR nightmare for the league, I’d be surprised if he’s went anywhere anytime soon.

It is a business though, if he’s recusing himself from judgments involving his son it is still a bad position for him to be in and it (would theoretically) creates (more, as if there isn’t enough already) inconsistency in rulings.

I know it’s not illegal, but it’s sure as hell unethical.

Speaking of PR nightmare, in the wake of all these brutal hits the mainstream media is solidly focused on March Madness. If a PR nightmare did come to pass (ref collusion scandal, doping, something of this like) it would hurt the league universally and I’d wonder if they’d recover.

Suspend Colin Campbell!

by snowburnt on Mar 18, 2010 11:35 AM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

Its a bad conflict. I always wondered how the owners put up with it. In any event, Campbell won’t be replaced until the owners want him replaced. I would suspect there are a majority of owners who want him out of that role at this time, and he will not be back next year.

As for the commissioner’s record, I agree that it is poor. But a dysfunctional PA is not a negative on his record, in fact it is a great positive and has probably saved the owners a bundle. He has done a great job at keeping rookie salaries down and controlled.

by Karl W on Mar 18, 2010 11:37 AM EDT up reply actions

I don’t disagree that the perception is bad, but he was hired on, by the league, and has been doing this for awhile, including the last six (I think) seasons, being vouched for by officials by both the league and by several teams (hell, McPhee praised his work in the role as recently during the Gleason incident), all while Greg takes up a roster spot.

To the PA point, considering how the league is being operated, both by its management and by those who are protecting the players, common sense doesn’t exist in that realm (a little overreaching, but I gave it a shot).

I really hate to bring this up...

but I can’t believe that Campbell said that if there had been no injury on OV’s hit, he probably wouldn’t have been suspended. WTF?!? What about Cooke??? What about all these other injury-causing hits?

by Elliotte on Mar 18, 2010 7:11 AM EDT up reply actions

Those were “legal hits”. Basically, Campbell’s logic (which I obviously find flawed) is that if it’s both a) an illegal hit and b) results in an injury, there’s a suspension. In Campbell’s view (which I also disagree with), Cooke on Savard didn’t meet criteria a.

by sixsevenfiftysix on Mar 18, 2010 1:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Didn’t Richards get 5 and a game for his hit on Booth? Pretty sure the call was interference. Reasonably sure he did, because it won me the PIM category against F&B.

Isn’t that then an illegal hit that caused a massive injury? Yet no league action. That’s the part that frustrates me most: along the same line of reasoning, Richards should have had at least a game to contemplate his sins. Instead, nothing.

(But I was rooting against the Blue Jackets even since Nov 1, 2009 but stopped rooting against them after the Clark trade. And now Hitchcock’s been fired any how.)

Yeah, but Seabrook got up, hence only the 2. Nicely done, on-ice officials.

by MikeL-Caps on Mar 18, 2010 11:13 AM EDT up reply actions

The first SBN article (the one calling AO dirty) is laughable in its assertion that he has a rap sheet similar to Marchment, and insanely ridiculous with its comparison to Cooke.

The comparisons to Messier, Howe, Richard et al. aren’t that ridiculous, hell I’ve made them myself. But if a writer thinks Cooke’s and AO’s rap sheets are comparable, well s/he just loses all credibility in my eyes.

I have to go. But if I find one single dog hair when I get back, I'll rub... sand... in your dead little eyes. I also need you to buy sand. I don't know if they grade it, but... coarse.

by Steckel Me Elmo on Mar 18, 2010 6:56 AM EDT reply actions

I dunno. Besides the obvious that you point out, throwing out phrases like “he had no quarter for the opponent and often showed it by using his stick to carve their face like a sunday roast,” “sent many players to the locker room with high, dirty elbows to the head,” and “he took cheap shots at people with his stick, his skates, his elbows and his fists,” before concluding that this is the company Alex keeps is ridiculous, IMO. And somehow divining that AO plays with “an intent to injure” is wholly absurd.

On a somewhat related note, I’d love to stop talking about this. I’d love to stop linking to discussions of it. But I do think that it’s important to document what’s being written so that it might be responded to or just absorbed.

Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world

by J.P. on Mar 18, 2010 7:28 AM EDT up reply actions

I’m not saying he’s on par with Howe. Hell, Howe did things that would make even Matt Cooke blush. Maybe I’m just more receptive to comparisons to Messier/Howe etc because of the similarity in talent level and importance to teams, whereas Cooke is not even in throwing distance of their ability.

Even if I did consider Ovechkin to be dirty (as an aside, I completely agree with Travis’ article), I wouldn’t compare him to players like Cooke, because Ovechkin brings so much more to the table than a player like Cooke.

I just know I’ve responded to people who hate AO for his dirty play with questions along the lines of “what did you think about Howe?” or “what did you think about Messier?”

I have to go. But if I find one single dog hair when I get back, I'll rub... sand... in your dead little eyes. I also need you to buy sand. I don't know if they grade it, but... coarse.

by Steckel Me Elmo on Mar 18, 2010 7:34 AM EDT up reply actions

And I see a disconnect there. Howe? Messier? Those guys were dirty. There was intent there, a level of premeditation that simply doesn’t exist with Alex, as all of his questionable incidents have happened in the blink of an eye, and not one of his questionable incidents has been an elbow, or a headshot or a stick foul or a stomp.

I dunno. I see the comparisons in terms of overall physicality and intimidation/toughness, but the tactics aren’t similar at all, IMO.

That’s what I’ve been trying to get at, but for whatever reason couldn’t articulate. Thanks J.P.! He’s comparable in the toughness and skill, but not the actual style of play.

Look, there are perhaps two good things that have come out of “The Ovechkin Incident” (other than another subject for a Matt Damon/Jason Bourne movie)…

1. It has moved to the next level a genuine discussion about questionable hits in the game and what to do about them.

2. It was revealed a dark underside to the way some players are covered in the media. The piling on Ovechkin over the last few days seems to be primarily a function of Canadian hockey media (although we haven’t done the content analysis of that phenomenon). It is almost as if they’ve been waiting for this moment in his career. Although we hope it doesn’t come to pass, one can only imagine the sort of invective that will accompany an Ovechkin absence due to injury. Just how many ways CAN you say, “I told you so?”

If you've read this far...seek help.

We should find out in the next 12-48 hours, maybe even sooner if this was the case. But I think you would understand why I have my doubts.

I’m rally scratching my head over this idea that Ovechkin is a predator who targets the frail and the weak among NHL players. If one did a reasonably random sample of his “biggest hits” collection, you’d probably find players such as Colin White (no 98-pound weakling), Vitaly Vishnevsky (himself a big hitter once upon a time), Joni Pitkanen (who is no small man), Eric Staal, Dustin Brown… he’s an equal-opportunity hitter. What I think he needs to do, and what I suspect time will impart on him, is a sense of when he needs to apply that sort of hit. Sometimes, you just need to pass it up to stay in play.

This isn’t wrestling, where guys only wrestle guys in their own weight class. Post lockout was supposed to open up the game to little guys (not that Campbell is little). And like me, I’m sure you remember the “NHL Superstar” who did exactly that, preying on the weak and frial. But little, if anything, was ever mentioned of it.

As a matter of fact, he was lauded for being such a tough guy willing to dish out hits and score goals at the same time. And it was considered such a shame that he kept concussing himself with these thunderous hits he would throw.

But yeah, for the life of me, I can’t figure out why he was never treated like Captain A.O. has been…

It’s OK to dish out punishing hits, and injure the opposition (Scott Stevens, anyone?), as long as you have the self-abnegation routine down when it comes to the rest of your actions on and off the ice. That routine does not include flamboyant celebrations, smiling or referencing women, booze and fast cars during interviews. You might be able to get away with one of the above (Tiger Williams, e.g.) but not all of them.

To paraphrase H. L. Mencken, the Canadian hockey writer’s theory of the game is a haunting fear that someone might enjoy themselves playing it.

This is why I think AO is getting excoriated – he doesn’t do things the way they ought to be done.

And I do think that the Canadian media has an untoward effect on Colin Campbell’s decisions.

I like what I’m reading about Alec Martinez

Martinez combines long, very fluid strides with terrific speed. Martinez’s tremendous skating ability allows him to skate and stay with many speedy opposing players as well as jump up into plays. He is very solid positionally and does an excellent job of staying with his assignment. Martinez has great offensive potential and wonderful puck skills. While he will aggressively challenge opposing forwards, Martinez is not overly physical. His most glaring weakness is his strength.

If there’s one thing I learned based on last year, it’s more important to look at how a team is performing post-trade deadline. Don’t think that helps the Pens any, but last year it sure did.

They looked like a very tired team last night. You have to wonder if the two previous runs to the Finals, this year’s compressed schedule and the number of players they had in the Olympics isn’t finally starting to get to them. That’s why I think the deeper they go in the playoffs, the more susceptible they are to being beat.

He takes a ton of abuse in front of the net.

He scores a ton of “garbage goals” (rebounds, tip-ins, grinding, ugly, etc.), but those are the kind of goals you need on a team. Not everything is a beautiful tic-tac passing play or a rocket shot from 30 feet.

Hell, Tim Kerr and Dave Andreychuk were both great at that and neither got enough praise.

Hooks has a thing up about it over at Pensburgh, asking if you buy or sell the notion that the Pens are in trouble in the playoffs.

I am selling on that idea. In the first two periods last night, the Pens had a good forecheck, got plenty of shots, were probably ahead in puck possession…that sort of thing is particularly effective in a playoff series.

I’m not so worried about the Pens, if I’m a Pens fan.

Anyone see the Pelley (Devils v. Pens) boarding call last night?

it was late, with the numbers and nameplate of Goligoski visible and he was assessed a 5 minute major. Goligoski happened to be only a couple of feet (if that) away from the boards which I think in this case helped him avoid injury.

CC won’t suspend Pelley for this and the only difference I can see is the injury as outcome.

Not at all. Gogo didn’t play it well but Pelly was staring at his numbers the whole way. I don’t think Gogo played it much worse than what Campbell did either.

I disagree. Watch the video I linked above and pause at about 7 seconds in. Pelley is moving toward the top of the circle and Letang is moving toward the hash marks. Goligoski has his back angled to the boards and is looking towards Letang. He then turns away from Pelley to protect the puck. Pause it at 1:05 for another look. He should have seen Pelley in his peripheral vision.

The Pens have a lot of problems this year, but, as someone mentioned, I think their biggest may be that they’re just getting tired. Two consecutive Stanley Cup finals, Olympics, starting last season in Sweden… I think it all just adds up.

It’s not that hard. If you’re on Windows, stop the video at the point you want the still, then hit Alt + Print Screen to take a screenshot of the Window. From there, you can paste it (Ctrl-V – the image is now on your Clipboard) into your favorite image-editing program and crop it down to just the area you want.

On a Mac, it’s even easier. Stop the video and open the Grab utility. Choose “Selection” and select just the video frame, then click Capture.

Brooks Laich continues to win at life. [D.C. Sports Bog]

Steinz points out in that article that a number of Caps players are having career years, including Fleischmann who now has 20 goals (finally). The Caps now have six players with 20 or more goals and two who are close: Fehr with 19 and Green with 17. We could potentially end the season with eight players on the Caps who have 20 or more goals. That is ridiculous. The next closest team with as many 20 goal players is Vancouver with five and Tampa/Chicago with four.

Steinz’s two recent articles about Brooks augur well for his development as a player.

Looking at Flash’s production this year, I could easily see him drop back to 15 goals, 20 assists and 35 points in the future. Laich, on the other hand, seems to be willing to put in the effort day after day, season after season, to continually refine and improve his game. He may never hit 30 goals, but I get the feeling that he’s going to be a consistent contributor in the NHL for a long time to come.

There's a fine line between arrogance and ignorance and only I manage to erase that line.

And Flash isn’t putting in the effort to improve his game? Is that what you mean? Just asking.

by cuqui on Mar 18, 2010 12:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Flash’s shooting % this year: 19.4, 2008-9: 14.5, 2007-8: 9.3

Laich’s shooting % this year: 11.8, 2008-9: 12.4, 2007-8: 17.2

Given their two styles of play, I don’t see Flash sustaining his high shooting percentage. If anything, we could argue that Laich’s shooting percentage is far too low given his style of play and track record.

Bottom line, if I were to predict regressions here, I’d say that Flash is due for a fall while Laich should see a slight bump in production.

There's a fine line between arrogance and ignorance and only I manage to erase that line.

You don’t see the season-by-season improvement on Flash’s shooting percentage?

2007-08 to 2008-09 : + 5.2
2008-09 to 2009-10: + 4.9

I don’t think it’s unreasonable for him to stay around where he is now for a couple of years… or even to improve slightly next season.

19-20 pct is unsustainably high, imo. If you look at it, every year some guys end up around that number, but it’s always different guys. 15% is the high end of sustainable.

Do you have any evidence whatsoever to support this assertion?

Shooting percentages for most players fluctuate fairly substantially. The guys who can “control” them to some degree are at the very highest elite level, and even most of those guys can’t sustain it much higher than 15% (as fat_daddyo points out above). I find the idea that Flash’s innate shooting skill improved THAT much from year to year dubious, at best. Playing on the PP (where shooting % goes up a fair amount) has helped Flash a lot (over 1/3 of his goals are PPGs), but it likely won’t help him that much going forward.

The only other type of player who can sustain high shooting percentages are guys like Mike Knuble and Tomas Holmstrom – big bodied types who score ugly goals from in front of the net.

Between Brooks and Flash, who do you think fits either of the two categories above?

I haven’t done the splits, but I remember that Flash was leading the league with a 25%+ shooting percentage around New Year’s. Since then, it’s fallen quite substantially. I will point out that you argued at the time that this was sustainable, and I pointed out that it wasn’t. Shockingly enough, it wasn’t.

Specific to Knubs, he’s at 19+% this year. Last year? 15%.

The year before that? 16%. Before that, 15%.

Laich’s shooting pct is really encouraging, btw. He’s DUE, baby.

Yeah, I don’t think Knubs will sustain this rate – he was just unreal for a stretch there. On the other hand, he’s gotten a lot more ice time/opportunities in past years, so his aggregate numbers are better.

He’s at his peak years right now (26 y.o.) so I don’t see so much room for expansion, but he could be a consistent 25-30 goal guy for several more years, on the right line, right team and if he continues to refine his baker act…

See my above comment. Laich is reaching his prime, while Flash is a bit younger, but as we can see from guys like Knuble and Tomas Holmstrom, the skill set Brooks has ages pretty well. If he continues his single-minded focus on improving/maintaining his skills, I think he could be a consistent 25-30 goal scorer, which I just don’t see happening with Flash.

Flash before New Years: 14 G in 29G

Flash since: 6G in in 29G

Given what we know about Flash, which do you think is the “real” Flash?

Laich can be every bit as streaky, to be sure, but his style of play will prevent him from pulling Flash-esque disappearing acts.

It was mentioned in the OT thread that the ‘83-’84 Oilers squad scored the most goals in a season in NHL history. That team had eight players who scored 20 or more goals. Considering the difference in eras, it would be pretty damn impressive if the Caps could end the season with just as many assuming Fehr and Green reach the 20 goal mark.

Not the players. The only guy who actually looked like he felt badly about his hit (Alexander Ovechkin) is, as of this morning, the only guy who’s been suspended. (Pending Wisniewski.)

And this:

Can’t blame the Capitals for being angry, especially since Marc Savard’s injury is of much bigger concern than Brian Campbell’s. Repeat offender? Does it matter? Not for Matt Cooke or Steve Downie. Yes, for Ovechkin. (Even though he deserved one.)

To say there is a Canadian media agenda towards OV and the Caps drives me bonkers. It is not true. I have written about it before. I just want to throw my hands up and say "I give up".

You jumped to a conclusion that wasn’t there. For starters, I wasn’t referring to the Ovechkin coverage. I was talking in general. Secondly, I’m only talking about the national guys. I don’t have the time to go and seek out local Canadian coverage. Finally, the three Canadian guys I listed are top notch and they are the only national hockey columnists I do read, Canadian or American. Muir, Dater, Kelly, Burnside are all guys that I never read. In fact, I couldn’t name you one American columnist that can hold a match to those three that I named. Maybe Kevin Paul Dupont, but even he has fallen off lately to where I don’t read him much anymore. The fact is that when it comes to hockey journalism on a national level, there isn’t much to pick from but the ones that I do pick are Canadian.

dammit! I get so pissed by the hypocritical nature of half these articles about Ovie. Esp. articles like the Versus one, where they are like “if he keeps doing this, then media like TMZ will overshadow his great play with the antics of his bad choices.” HELLO?! How about “if he keeps doing this, the current article you are reading will continue to be written and assholes like the writer of the very words you are reading right now will continue to be ass hats”

I feel like I’m taking crazy pills here! Worst journalism ever! What does it even take now to write news articles? How do people get such jobs, cause it seems like it requires just sitting down and writing whatever the hell you want and getting paid for it.

Basic math:

My maximum available points = my current points + (2 * my games left)

My magic number is when my current points exceeds my closest opponent’s maximum points.

Example:

Caps = 70 games, 103 points. 12 GR * 2 = 24 + 103 = 127 maximum
Devils = 69 games, 87 points. 13 GR * 2 = 26 + 87 = 113 maximum.

When the Caps have 113 points, they win the conference.

Actually...

Here’s everyone’s EC max numbers by my calculations (current top 8 seeds):

Caps (103:127)
Devils (113) – Magic = 11
Sabres (110) – Magic = 8
Penguins (111) – Magic = 9
Senators (103) – Magic = 1
Canadiens (100) – already beaten
Flyers (103) – Magic = 1
Bruins (100) – already beaten

Once we have a combination of wins by us and losses by the Sabres totaling 8 points, they can no longer catch us. For the Pens, it’s 9 points, and for the Devils, it’s 11…

Well yeah, but let’s say the Devils lose their next two games and we lose our next two as well (and the Penguins don’t lose during that time span). In that case our “magic number” specifically to beat the Devils would be 7 and to beat the Penguins it would be 9, so our magic number would be 9, not 7.

Was just debating a simple way to explain that, but your explanation is way better than what I was coming up with.

One point: Caps clinch when they have 114 points, leaving tiebreakers out of it.

Actually, belay the part about tiebreakers. The Caps cannot win a tiebreaker with 113 points. For the Devils to get 113 points, they’d end up with 55 wins (42 wins now, + 13-0-0 down the stretch).

The most wins the Caps could have with 113 points is 52 (47 wins now + 5-7-0 down the stretch).

Anyway, they need 11 points gained/lost by NJD.

To win at all, is what I was saying, i.e., they can’t win a tiebreaker with the Devils, unless something very odd happens, like the Caps totally hit the skids and the Devils rack up a bunch of points through OT losses…

Don’t worry, it’s a pretty easy process, and not affected by the three point game. Just identify which team other than the Caps can finish highest in the conference/league—the team with the most points, unless another team has played fewer games and is within 2 points per game they have in hand. Then multiply the games that they have left by two and add it to their point total. Then subtract the Caps’ current point total from that number.

Then again, if I have to type a paragraph to explain it, it’s not really that simple, is it? :)

by sixsevenfiftysix on Mar 18, 2010 2:56 PM EDT up reply actions

You need to add one to the resulting number to make sure tiebreakers don’t come into play. Caps win all the tiebreakers for the conference anyway, so it doesn’t really matter, but I like to include that.

Thought they lost the second tiebreaker with NJD, and most scenarios with NJD where they would need a tiebreaker, they lose on the first tiebreaker, no?

Which makes me wonder — Ovechkin is more of a harbinger than an anomaly. If his hit warrants a suspension, the rules need to be changed to protect defenders/forwards going for the puck. If we need to remove the trapezoid which was suggested in the suspension thread, so be it. Something needs to be changed if we’re looking at protecting the players.

That’s pretty much the exact same scenario as AO/Campbell, imo. In hard on the forecheck, think a guy’s going one way and plan on finishing your check; he goes the other, and you end up hitting him in the back.

He knows full-well he’s not likely to get much grief from a player like Jaromir Jagr, whom he laid out in the Olympics, or a smallish defenceman like Campbell. Regardless, Ovechkin has crossed the line too many times.

Anybody watch that Russia/Slovakia game? Ovechkin is such a pussy. Throwing hits on that pansy ass Chara all game long.

You can take it another way — Ovechkin does target his opponents selectively. They’re usually the people that hit him or had a particularly hard hit on one of his teammates. So, maybe he was so wrong he ended up being right.

12/5: 8 goals against the Flyers- Ovechkin: out
1/09: 8 goals against the Thrashers- Ovechkin: one assist
1/26: 7 goals against the Islanders- Ovechkin: no points

Completely unrelated, can anyone give a primer on roster rules during the playoffs? Are teams limited to 25, or is it the 50 limit? What are the limitations on call-ups?

I think you can only have 3 non-emergency call ups, and an emergency is if your number of roster players at a position (forward or defense) falls below a thresh hold.

yeah, there’s no roster limit after the trade deadline also, so you can have as many as you can afford on your roster within the contracts limit. The moves this deadline will help keep the team NHL experienced when the injuries happen in the playoffs. It was one of the bigger flaws we had as people were playing injured last post season and the call ups were playing like call ups. They looked…ok…but the coach didn’t seem to trust them as much. You need more than that for the playoffs.

Suspend Colin Campbell!

There are no limits on roster size after the deadline (provided, of course, that you stay under the cap).

Teams are limited to four non-emergency call-ups until their AHL affiliate’s season is over.

by sydtron on Mar 18, 2010 12:24 PM EDT up reply actions

Unwritten rules? Not so much. They’re “unwritten” in that the referee on the ice blows the call and his partner covers for him. We saw this in Chicago, when they gave Ovie a 5 minute Major and a Game Misconduct for Boarding.

Except, there is no Game Misconduct for boarding unless the play results in an injury to the head or the face. Campbell was certainly injured, but sustained no injury to his head or face. Ovie should have been back on the bench after serving his 5.

If the NHL is going to allow the (incorrectly assessed) Game Misconduct to stand, and also suspend Ovi for 2 games, shouldn’t he be sitting out on Saturday too?

oops.

Well then.

Certainly Cooke’s hit couldn’t be labelled (gasp) unsportsmanlike, and sanctioned on that basis. Wait…
The ‘new’ head shot rule is going to make a further hash of NHL’s already lobotomized discipline standards. There already are plenty of tools to take cheap shots out: the league needs a stronger judiciary, not a more active legislative.

by redlineblue on Mar 18, 2010 4:22 PM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

And the NHL could issue a similar memo saying that blindside head shots are to be interpreted as intent to injure.

It’s different though, in my opinion. I don’t want the NHL to rush to crank out some crap rule that’s only going to lead to more confusion. The wording of the rule is going to be absolutely critical, and it’s important that it doesn’t go too far.

by sixsevenfiftysix on Mar 18, 2010 2:30 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m sure the wording will be vague enough that the refs can interpret a hook as an attempted head shot and therefore Semin will be suspended for most of the season.

Comparing those two behaviors (and what was done) to a league-wide behavior? Two separate things; besides, not recalling what the proposed new rule is offhand, it’s at least enough that the Competition Committee (of which there are 5 active players) has to meet on it to approve it.

But, yeah, Donald Fehr doesn’t give me warm fuzzies. For either side.

“If you hit a guy without the puck, you can kill a guy,” Quenneville told reporters. “It’s the most dangerous hit in the history of the game alright? And he tried to hurt him. That’s not intent?”

Even if you hit a guy who has the puck, you could kill him… but the hit on Campbell was premeditated, ruthless, and broke about four rules. If Wisniewski is not suspended for that hit for at least three games, preferably more, I will be stunned.

The league has until Friday to decide on that; I heard the hearing could be as early as this afternoon.

Wisniewski’s 8 games is a good suspension (albeit completely out of whack with precedent) because it punishes action and not outcome.

It totally flies in the face of precedent in both directions, but if this is what they’re going to do consistently going forward (hahahahahaha_hahaahaha_), then good on them. Punish the action, not the result.

i think there is no coincidence in that. this is the fastest ruling ever and no doubt colin wanted it done before the game.

and thats a crock of shit. now he’s adding another criteria to the suspension wheel o fun. the “i warned you” criteria. what if someone on the bruins w/ no track record of shenanigans goes after cooke with a high hard check into the boards. does he get more games because, well, he had been warned just before the game? or does colin go with the same criteria of the extent of the injury?

givent that the b’s are fighting for a playoff spot, i’m guessing there is limited or no crap going to happen with cooke. nobody’s going to turn away from a check on him thats for sure and maybe someone challenges him to a fight or three. but unless the game gets out of hand, i dont see anyone trying to get overly penalized for going after cooke.

Yeah, I loved seeing that. I’ll be so pleased if the game is a massive cluster-F of violence, and Campbell reaps what he has sown.

You had me at no problem.

But more to the point, the inconsistency and total disregard for precedent coming out of Campbell’s office is staggering. Cuqui brought up an interesting point — this may be a warning for the PIT/BOS game tonight that there best not be any funny business.

I’m extremely interested in seeing what Pelly gets for his hit on Goligoski now, if anything. If injury is a criteria for suspension, holding a player out, especially if it’s a player you’re neck-and-neck with for the division, is something you have to at least consider. Or report that the player is injured in time for the disciplinary hearing and then have him get a second opinion that clears him for play. It’s shady and the PA won’t go for it, but I wonder if they’re competent enough to make that claim stick.

Anyone agree with the assertion Crosby should fight tonight?

I don’t like holding other people responsible for the reckless behavior of other adults. That said, I won’t be surpised if it happens.

I won’t either. It would totally be hysterical. We have Matt Bradley who plays with honor and will fight anyone and absolutely will not let anyone punch AO. They have Matt Cooke who plays without honor and would let his team’s meal ticket take punches inna face because he’s a puss.

Killer_Carlson and Steckel Me Elmo are like brothers to me. And when I say brothers I don't mean like actual brothers. I mean it like how black people use it, which is more meaningful, I think.

While I agree that Wisnewski should be suspended, 8 games sounds awfully high. CC spun the Russian Roulette wheel and got a high number
