On Alex Ovechkin's hit on Brian Campbell and the ensuing s-storm
This might end up like an arbitration and the “comparables.” Is the comparable “Matt Cooke?” Or is it “Ian Laperierre?”
If the former, I would think Ovechkin will escape a suspension. If the latter, well…
If you've read this far...seek help.
Reason #? for Fehr's limited ice time
…if the league decides the hit is illegal, then maybe injury should come into play. I think it’s fair that if you hit a guy [who is] in a bad position, that maybe you should pay for that."
Eric Fehr (Per Senior El-Bashir)
Love how early you post these, perfect compliment to a coffee and a ciggy in the morning.
The ensuing s-storm is pretty nutty, literally every blog/website has a take on it and the range of opinion is also pretty crazy (peerless, as always, masterfully demonstrated that).
On a positive side, that was a very re-assuring win yesterday, one that I felt we really needed to get especially because we don’t play them much. The team looks so much more mature and able this year. Ovi is the backbone of course but every player has been working real hard lately. Fehr, Knuble and Lars have been really impressing me lately. When we get these occasional defensive kinks ironed out we’ll be even more terrifying.
I’ve seen Semin take some dumb penalities in the past but the goalie interference yesterday was just shocking. Can’t remember the last time I was so worked up about a hockey play.

I would agree with you if the first 2 periods hadn’t been as awful as they were. Coming out entirely flat for two whole periods doesn’t scream maturity to me, and I’d say that’s reinforced by the fact that they flipped a switch and won the game. This team is going to have to dig deep in the final two weeks.
by DrinkingPartner on Mar 15, 2010 9:19 AM EDT up reply actions
hahaha right after I wrote that I knew that that would be brought up. While I definitely agree with you (nothing to disagree about) about yesterday, I do want to note that we were playing rather well (excluding that defensive miscommunication which directly lead to the PP goal against) until Ovi got tossed out of the game. I’m cutting them a break for being a little shook up after that. The positive for me was someone other than Ovi putting the team on their back and willing this team to victory. Nicky stood out more than others yesterday but Fehr, Theo, Laich and Knuble were just as awesome in the third. Obviously not the preffered method of winning games but yesterday was an anomaly for me because so far this season I feel we have matched all of the top teams in intensity and definitely skill (exluding that game in San Jose).

The trick with thesis is to pick a topic that interests you/you enjoy working on. If you can do that the work may not be enjoyable, per se, but it’s better than any class because you are learning what you want to learn, and writing about what you want to write about.

And see that’s why I WAS excited…when I was all geared up for 6 months abroad on a tropical island. Now that I’m back and have a mound of interviews to sift through and transcribe and analyze, not so much. Regardless of how awesome your topic is, the process is still tedious as hell.

I did 85 pages for my senior honors thesis. On top of a final 40 page paper in one course and 30 pager in another. I wanted to kill myself by the time graduation came around.

Slewfoot? Not a slewfoot?

The amazing thing is that he’s become a much more disciplined player this year and has some solid point totals — much better than I ever thought he’d get.
But , like Cooke or Avery or whomever, these guys can’t seem to stop playing dirty.
Yeah. I think it’s wiring. I have been real impressed with Downie’s ability to be a hockey player (he’s still no TJ Oshie) but I think he’ll always have that borderline-insane thing going on.

Very much a slew-foot, by the definition:
52.1 Slew-footing – Slew-footing is the act of a player using his leg or foot to knock or kick an opponent’s feet from under him, or pushes [sic] an opponent’s upper body backward with an arm or elbow, and at the same time with a forward motion of his leg, knocks or kicks the opponent’s feet from under him, causing him to fall violently to the ice.
Of course, when I first saw Crosby throw his head back, it looked a bit like a dive, but then I saw the other view… daaaaaaamn. I don’t like Crosby, but that was a viciously nasty hit, and Downie hooked his leg out to do it, too.

ovie
i think i am changing my opinion after sleeping on it. it was an unnecessary and dangerous push. it WAS from behind. and i am not surprised. i dont know what is wrong with Ovie this year but it is too many times. he should be suspended, as unpopular as this will be. more importantly, ovie needs to stop. he is putting a target on himself and ostensibly on the Capitals. We just do not need this type of play. It was not an accident. Cooke should have gotten 10 games, and i once again disagree with Milbury—-which, once he spoke you all should have known he was wrong— he just picks out the unpopular stupid opinion and sticks with it to stir up controversy, or he is trying to kiss our ass here in DC after his little run in with the blogger. Sorry but i say 4 games. Regardless of intent, he did not need to push. Now how the hell Koci did not get 4 games on Green , i have no idea….
by lifetime caps fan on Mar 15, 2010 7:51 AM EDT reply actions
Campbell was losing his edge while being pushed. It was an unfortunate accident. That push happens multiple times a game.
The distance from the boards didn’t help either – closer or further, and it wouldn’t have been nearly as bad. Unfortunate, for sure.
"No Brooks Laich, no win. Know Brooks Laich, know win."
exactly kello. the rule book says 4-5 feet from the boards where they players head ends up hitting the boards with a check from behind. you dont get concussions from hitting your shoulder into the boards.. 10 feet away is being generous. I dont think he was quite that far away. Ovie did not push the guy 10 feet away. JUST LET UP in that situation and skate around the net. Bad for Ovie , Bad for Campbell, Bad for the Caps, Bad for the fans—both ours and those coming out to see Ovie in Chicago, bad for NBC to have him ejected, and that all equals BAD FOR THE NHL when they are on display nationally. Nothing at all good came from this. You just can’t give him the benefit of the doubt every single time. No one besides Caps fans have doubt anymore. And now it is just going to get worse and worse. He won’t be able to sneeze on the ice without 2 minutes for unsportsmanlike conduct..
by lifetime caps fan on Mar 15, 2010 8:55 AM EDT up reply actions
I’m not worried due to the simple fact that he’s a smart guy. He’s a joker which leads people to underestimate his intelligence. I hear you on the “it wasn’t a good game for the nhl” but that’s not his/mine biggest concern. Also, I really don’t care what fans of other teams think of him, it seems like 85% people posting on message boards are trolls anyways. I do give him the benefit of the doubt every time because I don’t think he’s dirty at all, not even a little bit. I have confidence that if he starts getting penalized for sneezing on the ice, he will adjust accordingly. I’m kind of shocked at how disproportionate people’s reaction to the actual play is.

I think there was something wrong right before Ovi got suspended, he didn’t seem himself. However, he’s been nothing short of incredible since being made captain, I haven’t noticed one even slightly questionable play since then. I especially liked how he had Nicky’s back two games ago (I believe). What happened yesterday was not part of some pattern that he’s been creating lately. In my eyes it was more of a unfortunate freak accident and nothing more. Keep doing you, Ovi.

you know what i was noticing that EXACT same thing, and never said a word , but everytime you see him, he seems depressed. im not a doctor, but he has not seemed happy since before the olympic break… something is up. as far as he goes however, i am just concerned for him, and selfishly for the Caps and Ted, because i have 7 incidents now that have occurred with him and most are within the last year or so.. and you guys will probably remember more. We have Heward, Briere, Kaleta, Gonchar, Gleason, the slew foot that he was penalized for, and now this. All I care is that it stops. When you are in the middle of this many controversial plays, at some point YOU are the problem. They are not picking on him because of him being a Capital. No one is picking on Nicky. If losing the scoring title and a few personal trophies and some more cash will make Ovie a kindler gentler player, and eventually a Cup winner, then there is no better time than now to suspend him. The Caps will be fine for 4-5 games. This talk about “wanting what they have—the puck”, is just not an excuse anymore. All 10 guys on the ice want the puck. Just be responsible. IF Campbell is my kid, or im a HAWK fan, im pissed off today. And if that is Nicky or Green out for the year, im pissed off today. And if CC does not start cleaning up this game, its going to be head hunting and bounty hunting season. Cooke 10 games, Ovie 4, and the next time 10 for Ovie. If Ovie does not change his play now, he wont be anywhere near is good in a few years, so you guys should start rooting for someone to reign him in as well.
by lifetime caps fan on Mar 15, 2010 8:25 AM EDT up reply actions
Here’s my opinion.
1) If Ovie doesn’t play full-speed with 100% intensity, he’s much much less of a player and not even close to top-tier. period. His hustle, grit, hitting and drive are what make him so special. Hoping that he changes his play wouldn’t be good for anyone.
2) I’m pretty sure if campbell was hit (pushed) squarely from behind, his face would’ve been the first thing to hit the boards… not his shoulder.
3) you can’t suspend Ovie for 4 games if you don’t suspend cooke. well, then again, you can… the NHL has zero consistency in their enforcement to clean up the game, so comparing any hit to any other hit is pointless and can bring you to no conclusion.
4) I bring up Alan May’s comments from a few weeks ago, I feel it comes into play here. I’m not advocating it would have definitely made a huge difference here, but personally, I feel that in this situation… the players have to learn to protect themselves. With all of the new rules for protecting players from headshots and whatnot, they’ve begin to let not respect themselves as much as anyone else.
i have to disagree on all 4 points. ovie would have been just as good of a player yesterday if he did not push Campbell, not much much less if he does not play that way. Campbell was not hit from the side, i have seen a blown up image from directly behind the play, a different angle than NBC had, it was virtually squarely on the numbers, 3, you can suspend Ovie for 4 games because the NHL has been morons for years, and have no clue what they are doing—-maybe Colin Campbell is not the man for this job?? And 4, Campbell could not protect himself, Ovie is huge. By the definition of boarding, Ovie plain and simple has to let up at that spot on the ice. IF he makes that hit at center ice, its nothing. But thats where he needs to think before he acts. IF Campbell is up against the boards already, im agreeing with you. Plain and simple, i want to avoid something bigger coming down the road, and i FEEL like it IS coming and within a year or 2, we are going to come back to this day and this is going to be just part of the pattern to someone really really getting hurt bad. I just want this nonsense gone from the game. I think Ovie is a good guy but he IS too reckless. I cant keep defending him as the chart of players injured keeps getting longer, and many of these injuries would have been avoided by just pulling up a bit.. Its not good for hockey if Campbell is out for the year..

Right, but that makes it look like they were bothing going full-bore into the end boards. They were turning towards the behind-the-net area. Ovi’s push should have just sent Campbell on through, or at worst made him go shoulder-to-glass once they came out of the turn.
My ability to post is only surpassed by my ability to pinch pennies.
its like i said, if semin pushes him, he doesnt go down. So is that ovies fault? Should he be aware of his own strength? Should he be penalized for being that strong and does he have an obligation to know what will happen BECAUSE he is so strong?? Logic says he should not, but if the end goal is safety and respect for players, he should be at least more cautious along the boards. That is where alot of incidents are occurring..
by lifetime caps fan on Mar 15, 2010 9:25 AM EDT up reply actions
He doesn’t go down if he doesn’t catch that rut is what it boils down to. Ovie pushed him, and pushed him low, so it shouldn’t have sent him off balance much.

I disagree. That same exact play happened multiple times in the game to and from ShaMo, and one particularly nasty one against Sasha, when he got pushed from behind and his feet gave out. He hit the boards harder than Campbell did, but he got right up.

And you’ve pin pointed the reason you can’t penalize for injuries. It’s ridiculous that they have the bloody nose double-minor, you can see guys scratching their face to draw a penalty.
What next, throw out a guy with osteoperosis in front of Ovie or Crosby to have the game changers out of the game because you shattered a guy that shouldn’t have been playing? Not saying campbell shouldn’t have been playing, but if he’d landed differently he wouldn’t have been injured at all or he could have been paralyzed. Just like if that puck hadn’t hit Lecavlier’s elbow the lightning wouldn’t have won two nights ago. it’s a bad bounce.
It was a bad hit, but made to look much much worse by the fall and after effects.

well he was clearly past the blue line, so he is in that 4-5 foot range or closely approaching it with his follow through…anyway, bottom line is the health and safety of players. we would all be in mourning right now if Cooke did this to Ovie in DC next week and he is done for the year, so i am trying to be objective. Seems like a time-out may be in order and some better judgment moving forward..
by lifetime caps fan on Mar 15, 2010 9:28 AM EDT up reply actions
You keep saying 4-5 feet. The video clearly shows that Ovie began pushing him before they reach the goal line, which is about 11ft. This means it’s not 4-5 feet.
There's a fine line between arrogance and ignorance and only I manage to erase that line.
i just went back and rewatched it in slow motion. he put his hands on his back at 11 feet. he then kept them on his back, followed through with the push and let go of him at about 4 feet…so that is what i mean. he did not just give a push at 11 feet and let go.

the fact that there is so much debate means that it is hard to know what the right answer is or what to do. Imagine Campbell’s (Colin) job now. When you don’t have a clear cut answer you have to look at character and past performance. This won’t go in Ovie’s favor. We said Gonchar was bs, we said Gleason was bs. We keep defending and we have to KEEP defending. Are you saying he could not have done ANYTHING differently? Nick Backstrom will never make that exact same play. I was pissed when Koci did it to Green, and he got nothing, and i thought that was worse than this. I think the league is a joke, the front office anyway. I really hope you would feel the exact same way if this was one of our players. It was an unneeded and preventable play because there was a final thrust and a push off into the boards. I have watched it 20 times and he pushes off and down at the end. He has no shot in that instant to protect or brace himself..

hard to say what would have happened without the skate getting caught. who knows , maybe the force of the hit caused that…?? i dont know. he just always seems to be the guy with the quizzical “who me?” look on his face. we cant just protect alex, we have to protect everyone. if this is first time incident, i defend him. based on body of work, and some other brutal plays, he is starting to really cast doubt on himself, and the doubt is growing.

Agree with jordanDC here, it happens a lot. Now, this was different I think in Campbell’s position (body and relative to boards) was not ideal at all and his balance was a little off, but still, Ovie’s made that play hundreds of times in his career.

Now if we can only get Locker to start calling him Jumbo Joe. . .
From the video I was watching, though I could import it into my video editing software to find out precisely the time i’m just to lazy to do so, Campbell dished the puck at 0:05, Ovechkin hits him at 0:06. Campbell is on the ice after hitting the boards at 0:07
Its not a late hit, hitting a guy less than 1 second after he had the puck is not a late hit, its finishing the forecheck.

I feel for Campbell and ‘Hawks fans, but Jordan is right. If Campbell doesn’t catch an edge it’s a non-issue. Adams hit AO like that, Callahan boarded Green from behind, this stuff happens. Unfortunately Campbell didn’t get up and the refs overreacted. I just hope the NHL doesn’t do the same.

I think it’s less about the edge and more about the timing of it. One half-second more and Campbell is a couple feet closer to the boards and is turned perpendicular to Ovie. Instead of falling awkwardly, he gets hit shoulder-first into the boards and gets back up. His right skate catching the rut didn’t help, but I don’t think it was the primary cause.
Either way, it’s a hockey play gone wrong.
There's a fine line between arrogance and ignorance and only I manage to erase that line.
Yeah I agree, the timing was all FUBAR. But I think the skate played a huge role. I look at the Laich on Kane hit just a little later; Kane stayed on his feet and just went into the net. If Campbell doesn’t toe pick I think he just glides to the boards and absorbs the impact like he’s done a million times before in his hockey career.

The bigger picture here is that generally if Ovi doesn’t play like Ovi he doesn’t create all of those opportunities to shoot the puck for himself and his teammates. I also completely agree that the qualities you have listed Scofield, those are the qualities that make Ovi the player he is. You can’t have it both ways, either he plays physically or he doesn’t. I feel there is nothing that he can eliminate from his game to be less reckless because I refuse to believe that he has a dirty bone in his body. If none of them were intentional, what can he eliminate?

5) Water is wet
just wanna see if we agree on anything :-) Ha!
I do see where you’re coming from, clean hit or not / injury or not, I hate to see any player go into the boards awkwardly. That being said… either the guy just wasn’t protecting himself or Ovie is super-human, hit him in the back and willed him into a full barrel roll so that his shoulder hits the boards first. The same play happens numerous times per game where the two guys bump into each other and both continue, on their feet, around the net.
wait… you agreed with me on number 3 as well … partially :-) the NHL needs to get their s#it straight. Campbell needs to be removed. Promote Pierre Champoux!
i agree on number 5——-unless, wait , wait a second, is it WET if it is frozen? and is it still technically water at that point??? hmmmm
Ovie is super human, though. And unfortunately for everyone else, and probably himself, that is what is causing injuries. So that begs the question, “Should he take his own size/strength into account before he hits someone?” I guess not. That Jagr hit in Vancouver was monster and Jagr is not little and he is strong. All Russian Machines must not hit so hard, the weaker humans cannot handle it.

Very similar to the debate about 10 years ago with Shaquille O’Neal getting called everytime he leaned on a player. He was so much bigger, they couldn’t help but fall over (and Shaq got penalized for it).

When you are in the middle of this many controversial plays, at some point YOU are the problem.
I normally agree with that, but it is so overblown with AO. Kaleta was 2 minutes at worst; Kaleta is the reason that was a dangerous hit, not AO. Gooch was an accident. Briere and Gleason are the two hits I don’t like. I don’t like the optics of the Heward hit, but when both Heward and Tocchet came out in AO’s defense that says a lot. When I watch AO go out hitting I think the same think I think when I watch Dustin Brown and Ryan Callahan: I fucking love it. But he’s better than both of them, and gets more ice, and is significantly bigger than Callahan. All three guys hit anything that moves, and I’ve seen all three guys cross the line. The problem is AO has a hater entourage that latches on to every one of his bad hits, while nobody gives a fuck about Brown and Callahan because they just aren’t as good or high profile. It comes with the territory, and I don’t mind that AO plays like that. He’s not the first NHL player to do it, he won’t be the last, and if he was a Canadian boy he’s be completely lionized for his physical edge.

i dont know what is wrong with Ovie this year but it is too many times
I’d like to think this is just a byproduct of him trying to be a more physical players while “stepping back” and letting his teammates flourish and have career years but…
But that wouldn’t be entirely accurate. Look at his avg # of hits per game throughoutn the years:
05/06: 2.12
06/07: 2.24
07/08: 2.68
08/09: 3.07
09/10: 2.67
He’s definately been taking it up a notch , season after season. 2.67 hits a game is a descent enough pace to put him in the top 20 or top 10 in hits for 82 games… but it doesn’t seem anything out of the ordinary for him when you compare the last 2 seasons.
He’s also stronger this year, so when he hits there is more force.

07/08: 0.48
08/09: 0.91
09/10: 1.32
So 07/08 he picked up his hitting pace big time and yet his pim’s per game plummeted. Then the season where he took his hits up to a new level, his pim’s per game definately shot up as well.
This season.. hard to draw any conclusions. But one could argue that he was just on the radar more so he had a bigger target on his back. Another could argue that he’s been trying to replicate his 07/08 season too hard. I dunno. I think I’ll collect a little more detailed data about minors/majors, etc and draw a graph. Maybe we’ll see a trend.
He has 3 game misconducts to inflate that.

Game misconducts are counted as 10 minutes when counting PIMs.
I need a snappy signature...
by IRockTheRed on Mar 15, 2010 10:57 AM EDT up reply actions
Is there any way to tell what types of PIMs those are? Are they the Sasha variety (stick penalties) or the roughing variety?
Here’s the best I can do. I’m not sure where to get the exact type of penalties sum’d up. Hockey-reference is kinda of hard to navigate but:
minor major
05/06: 26 0
06/07: 16 2
07/08: 20 0
08/09: 35 0
09/10: 18 3
So toss out majors and we get this
minor penalties per game
05/06: .320
06/07: .195
07/08: .244
08/09: .443
09/10: .295
So there are other stats this year that indicate that his “carelessness” hasn’t been anything out of the ordinary this year and has been in alignment with the rest of his trends.
Maybe it would help if I could get a league average for some of this stuff to see if maybe the refs have just been a bit more zealous this year in trying to protect players
I did a quick check back through the game logs, here’s what he’s gotten so far this year:
Rough/hitting penalties
Boarding (5PIM) – 2
Kneeing (5PIM) – 1
Game Misconduct (10PIM) – 3
Roughing (2PIM) – 5
Unsportsman like Conduct (2PIM) – 1
Crosschecking (2PIM) – 1
Tripping (2PIM) – 2
-—
Stick/position penalties
Interference (2PIM) – 3
Hooking (2PIM) – 3
Slashing (2PIM) – 2
Diving (2PIM) – 1
So again.. nothing out of the ordinary when it comes to the 3 “questionable” calls. So is there something wrong with the refs this year? Or is Ovie really just playing it a little too lose?
The only thing is how do these numbers compare to previous years, too bad no one seems to keep stats like this (I had to check each gamelog on Yahoo).
Well .. I mean.. the frequency of minor penalties is nothing out of the ordinary. I’m just trying to see if there are any stats that could show whether or not Ovi really is being more wreckless. I haven’t found any.
For some time I’ve been trying to find an easy way (other than going through game by game) to assemble the types of penalties and WHEN during the game they occurred and what the score was at the time to come up with a post about “whuch Russian takes the dumbest penalties, Malkin, Semin, or Ovie”.. dumb being weighed a lot by how late in the game, how far behind (or just barely above) your opponent you are in scoring.
I’ll probably wait until the end of the season for it though.
NHL hit stats are about as reliable as the weather. I would but zero stock in that stat as evidenced by the fact that the home team always has more credited hits.
Just trying to capture the spirit of the thing...

My first reaction was come on Ovi what are you doing? As I have watched it over and over again I noticed 1. he pushed Campbell..originally I thought he put his shoulder into him. 2. I noticed the size difference between the Ovi and Campbell 3. Campbells right skate hit a rut and went underneath of him…
I think it was an unfortunate ending and I do no see ANY malicious intent. They were both skating at a very high speed and I dont think campbell knew Ovi was that close to him. Ovi put his elbow in his back but pushed off with his hands one on the shoulder blade and the other in his armpit. I think if Campbell was aware of where Ovi was this would not have happened.
Ovi gave him a nice warning stick tap on the side of the leg which let him know EXACTLY where he was.
"the other day on sportscenter they said something along the lines of "the capitals score so much tiger woods is jealous" haha had me laughing hard while i was eating my cereal"
Great catch. That should not be ignored. Whether it was a swat for the puck or a warning, it doesn’t matter. Campbell knew exactly where AO was.

I don’t think he’s going to get scratched, and I don’t think he’s battling from in a hole just because he was scratched already. Like half the team has been a scratch recently, including Boudreau’s boy Flash.

But AO played less than 5 minutes yesterday, and then Bruce got to try new lines. I think the Rink consensus was that if AO is out, he should have Chimera at 1L, but will of course go with Flash instead. And BMo would get a sweater again.

Someone noted yesterday that Fehr served AO’s five minute major yesterday, which really cut into his ice time. It was also fairly symbolic of Fehr’s relationship with Coach.
And I pointed out that Fehr’s goals, more often than not, come at clutch moments and make important momentum changes for the team.. They are not usually the game winning goals, but the goals that allow the team to make the comeback.
Now helping to keep an eye on all things Gr8 at Alex Ovetjkin.

Did he actually say that? I thought that was just a comment by TEB…
There's a fine line between arrogance and ignorance and only I manage to erase that line.
I could be wrong, but I thought Rink posters indicated they’d heard Flash say that in post-game interviews. Maybe responding to a leading question from TEB/others, but still…
He said, " A little message: Don’t sit me out!" and he was laughing as he said it. It was clearly a joke, a light hearted comment. I suppose you could view it as smart-assed, but I’m a member of the Flash lobby so I didn’t see it that way. All the guys who are getting rotated in and out of the lineup are having to prove that they should be on the ice for any given game.
You had me at "no problem"!
What's the exchange rate on a Cup victory?
That’s what I want to know from anyone that likes to throw out the “he has more championships” argument in any sport. Sure, only an idiot would suggest that Trent Dilfer is better than Dan Marino, or that Max Talbot is better than Alex Ovechkin. But those examples don’t exactly spur discussion. How about Dan Marino or Terry Bradshaw? Larry Robinson or Bobby Orr? Mark Messier or Wayne Gretzky? There’s simply no way to translate team success to individual success. Talbot not only uses that hack argument, but he apparently is a soothsayer as well. Who the hell knows if AO or Crosby is going to end up with more Cups? And does it really matter? Rocket Richard and Jean Beliveau were amazing players, but I don’t think I’ve ever heard someone seriously argue that they were better than Gretzky or Howe. Shit, even Lemieux doesn’t particularly stack up well in the Cup department. Is it a matter of “one is enough to prove you are great”? That doesn’t seem to be what Talbot is implying. And then how do you deal with Dan Marino and Tim Brown? To me, it’s a lazy argument that someone uses when they can’t be bothered to actually delve into the merits. Unfortunately, it’s all too pervasive.

I got checked from behind/side when I was 13 and broke my clavicle. As I recall the play looked kind of similar to what happened to Campbell. There was a 10 minute major but no suspension for the guy who hit me. My teammate’s mother was a doctor (interestingly an OBGYN) and diagnosed the injury from the bench. The worst part of a clavicle brake (in my opinion) was trying to sleep lying down. I distinctly remember having to sleep in a chair for the first week because I tend to roll on my sides when asleep.
"Hey, atta dinnin stick a who!"
I was potisliding to diffuse a breakaway in the first shift of the game. Couldn’t stop myself, and luckily hit shoulder-first instead of head/neck-first.
Definitely remember sitting up to sleep amongst a thousand pillows.. not fun. And also not fun walking around in a crowd with a busted collar bone. Every bump was like a needle prick.

Ovechkin's hit...
Maybe I’m an apologist, but here is what I saw from the replay:
Ovechkin racing down the ice, after a loose puck. Campbell beating him to it by a stride. Ovechkin makes contact with Campbell near goal line, and does NOT sustain contact all the way into the boards – although he could have. Force of contact (force = mass X velocity – Ovechkin is a big guy, and a fast skater) sufficient to knock Campbell into the boards. Campbell contacts boards awkwardly, and ultimately and unfortunately breaks collarbone.

Let’s also not forget that if Campbell’s feet are angled differently, Ovie’s push just carries the defenseman along.

I say, if Ovi has as many dangerous hits next year, and gets himself suspended for them, he should have the Captaincy taken away from him. We can’t have a Captain who continually loses games to suspension.
He is not necessarily a dirty player but is bigger and stronger and more likely to cause injury to other guys. At the rate he’s going, assume 3 game misconducts per year unless he can figure out how to avoid it.
For tomorrow (and during the duration of Ovi’s expected suspension), let’s give Laich the “A” so we can groom him for the job. My own recommendation is - if Ovi gets suspended twice next year, he should lose the captaincy.

I feel advocating taking the captaincy if Ovechkin’s suspended more than once and also saying that he’s not a dirty player and is just more likely to get misconducts because he’s bigger and stronger and thus more likely to hurt guys is saying that if the referees make two bad calls next year, Ovechkin should lose the ‘C’ – and I can’t say I agree with that.

Well, I suppose it depends who you ask. I thought the major yesterday was legitimate, but I realize I’m in the minority here on that.
My frustration with the refs was more their “interpretation” of the rulebook that equated what Ovie did with the kind of hit that Koci laid on Green. The rule was written to eliminate the Koci hit, not the Ovie hit, therefore the application of the automatic game misconduct was inappropriate in my opinion.

I don’t really think that should play in to it. The injury/non-injury on the part of the guy who was on the receiving end doesn’t always match up with how dangerous the play was.
It was definitely a knee and Briere was definitely from behind. Those are incontrovertible. The others, though, including yesterday….

Exactly. That’s my problem with this hit; if Campbell gets up there is no way AO gets 5 and a game. But he didn’t. AO deserved what he got for Gleason, but I don’t think he got his money’s worth on Kaleta or Campbell.

The game misconduct for the Kaleta hit was absurd and the call yesterday was a CYA by the refs after the Cooke non-call.

Agreed. That Kaleta hit should be the prime example of a guy turning into a dangerous hit to draw a call. He sees AO coming, plays the puck, and turns face first toward the boards. What an ass.

But I think the notoriety from the Cooke play may have had a factor in the refs’ minds. It was definitely a different play, but I could see the refs panicking when Campbell went down. “We aren’t going to be the idiots to let a bad hit go unpunished!”

Meh. 2 of the 3 hits are not legitimate game misconducts. The Gleason hit is the only one he deserved to be tossed for. No way he’s gone for the game if Campbell gets up, that was just awkward and a mess.

You can put some of it on the refs, but I don’t think any player should be making borderline hits. The Campbell hit was a penalty (though maybe not a major), and partially Ovechkin’s fault.

That’s all well and good to say from where we sit. But borderline hits are by definition going to happen. There’s a gray area, and players are going to play in it. You got into it with Hooks Orpik the other day because of how he characterized Tootoo. I realize Tootoo is cleaning his whole ack up, but he still lives in that gray area. There’s a reason fans love guys that play on the edge. You could say AO is so good that he doesn’t need to play on the edge, but playing on the edge is what makes AO AO.

Exactly, and I won’t defend Tootoo for it, either. Ovechkin can play with an edge without racking up boarding or charging penalties. The Jagr /Richards hits are good examples.I think he’s been unfairly penalized several times, but that doesn’t stop him from making good decisions on how he’s going to hit.

I just don’t think it’s so easy to change your mindset. When you are in “hit everything that moves mode” you are bound to hit something you shouldn’t. I’ve never seen him drive a guy face first into the boards, I’ve never seen him destroy a guy when the puck wasn’t there. Basically what I’m getting that is that from my vantage point, AO is always attempting a legitimate hockey play. Sometimes he’s over-zealous, and sometimes it goes wrong. But he’s not in the class of guys that I’d call dirty; he’s not trying to injure people and he’s not throwing cheap shots behind the play. Would I like him to somehow cut the questionable hits out? Yeah. But I’d rather live with the questionable hits than see him become Ilya Kovalchuk. Hopefully as he matures he learns to walk that fine line. Like I said before, when you watch an AO hit, just imagine it was Dustin Brown and ask how you’d feel about it.

Ovechkin can play with an edge without racking up boarding or charging penalties.
Disagree. Hockey is played at breakneck speed (no pun intended) and if you play on the edge, you will inadvertently go over it on occasion. That’s what’s called a penalty. It’s when you make a play knowing you will hurt the opponent that it becomes dirty. Ovechkin’s hit was a penalty. By giving him a game misconduct, the ref said it was malicious which is wasn’t.
Actually...
The boarding major automatically comes with a game misconduct. You can’t hand out one without the other.

I posted the relevant rule below, but for reference:
Game Misconduct Penalty – When a major penalty is imposed under this rule for a foul resulting in an injury to the face or head of an opponent, a game misconduct shall be imposed.
I’ve asked the NHLOA to clarify, because there was no head or facial injury in the play that I saw.
I need a snappy signature...
by IRockTheRed on Mar 15, 2010 11:34 AM EDT up reply actions
Right, but it’s not the case that you can’t give a game misconduct, it’s just that it’s not automatic.
I don’t think I’ve seen a boarding major without one, though… it may be based on head/facial injury, if the rule is followed to the letter of the law, but that isn’t the way they call it on the ice. I’d look them all up this season to check, but I’ve got a brutal headache and I don’t want to go through 1024 game summaries today…
I need a snappy signature...
by IRockTheRed on Mar 15, 2010 11:52 AM EDT up reply actions
As I said above, that rule was written for the Koci-Green or Ryder-Comeau hits, not for what Ovie did. It was put in place to punish/deter guys from ramming an opponent’s head/face into the boards from behind. There’s simply no way to spin this hit in that fashion, even if you’re “committed to the Indian.”
Should have been a 5 min major with no misconduct.
There's a fine line between arrogance and ignorance and only I manage to erase that line.
I agree – but I have not seen it called that way in practice. If anyone has an example where they called a boarding major WITHOUT a game misconduct, please, by all means, tell me.

It’s been said over and over at this point. But I have no issue with him penalized for that hit…even with a major. However, I have serious issue with the game misconduct and don’t get me started if he actually gets suspended.
I will throw this out there…at the very least the NHL loses my money from the NHL package next season. I won’t give up my season tickets, but all other money will go away until Campbell (NHL, not CHI) is replaced.
/I know I’ve been a Campbell apologist all season
I could live with a 5, I’m just not sure they can call a five and not a game. And a game is excessive to me. I’m not so worked up over a game because at real speed it could have looked really bad (maybe they didn’t see Campbell toe pick) but a suspension after review would be aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaatrocious. Especially coming on the heals of the Cooke decision.

Realistically, its impossible to a referee to make the assessment at real speed, with one look, that maybe the hit looked worse than it was. Hopefully Campbell’s office gets it right, somehow I doubt they will.
What does it say about the NHL when the KHL has more credibility in terms of disciplining players?

42.1 Boarding – A boarding penalty shall be imposed on any player who checks an opponent in such a manner that causes the opponent to be thrown violently in the boards. The severity of the penalty, based upon the degree of violence of the impact with the boards, shall be at the discretion of the Referee.
and more…
Game Misconduct Penalty – When a major penalty is imposed under this rule for a foul resulting in an injury to the face or head of an opponent, a game misconduct shall be imposed.
So it looks like if they had known for a fact that Campbell didn’t have a head injury when they called the penalty, they could have given him 5 without the game, but …

I used to play hockey in high school but I quit for two reasons. One, I wasn’t very good and two, I realized pretty quickly that hockey was a dangerous sport and sooner or later I was going to get hurt from a routine play. I had a lot of really talented players on my team, guys who went on to have very good careers in college and it became apparent to me that they played with an edge that I couldn’t go to. Sometimes, they’d cross the line but their willingness to go there is what made them excel. Plays like the one Ovechkin made on Campbell used to be routine in the NHL. Fans and players accepted that hockey was a risky sport and stuff like that happened because they were hockey plays and not plays where the intent was to injure. Today, those same plays are considered dirty and malicious. What some commentators don’t understand is that if you legislate out of the game that ability to go to the edge, if you force players to consider the possible ramifications of every hit, you’ll have a game played with sticks and pucks but it won’t be the hockey we’ve come to know and love in the NHL. It may be safer, but I don’t think it will be as much fun to watch.

I agree with most of this, but I think that these plays happen more often than you think. The difference with Ovie is his media profile and the speed of information nowadays. Recently, the “great” players have tended to be rather gentlemanly: Gretzky, Lemieux, Sakic, Yzerman, etc… But in the past, you had guys like Gordie Howe, who were filthy SOBs. However, the journalists and broadcasters covering the game didn’t make as big a deal about how he used to pummel guys with his elbows in the corners. Without Sportscenter or YouTube, how on earth would anyone know that he wasn’t a gentlemanly player?

Mark Messier was dirty as hell. But he’s known as a “fierce leader” and a “battler.”

The guy played right up until the lock out. Give me a break “different era.” If you want to say that for Howe or Toe Blake, fine. But Messier is “modern era” to the core. How about D. Hatcher? Eric Lindros? Chris Chelios? You can find guys that were much dirtier than AO’s ever been without going back 30+ years.

I’d make the differentiation in media, if not in the style of play.
Also, by the time Messier was older, he’d chilled out a ton.

This is going to be another time with us agreeing to disagree. By defintion, IMO, post-lockout is a different era for the NHL. The rules are completely different as is the style of play.
In which case there are literally no meaningful player comparisons. That goes way too far.

Sorta. I can cut Gordie Howe some slack because the physical play was on another level. Self-policing was much more prevalent, there was one ref, players literally had to create their own space a lot more than they do now. But at the same time, whatever era you are talking about Howe did some ridiculously dirty stuff. In what era is it just cool to bust a guys eye with your elbow?

Everyone knows that Howe was a dirty player, they just don’t care. “That’s good old fashion hockey.” It’s a double standard regarding past players. You hear all this nonsense about how players used to have respect for each other and they don’t now, then the same announcers will turn around and celebrate Gordie Howe’s elbows or Bobby Clarke hacking his way to Canada’s Summit Series victory.

Sure, but the point is that even knowing what the old time players did they don’t get called dirty. No one is saying “yeah, looking back they were dirty but there just wasn’t the same focus on protecting players back in the day.” They talk about how Gordie Howe was such a good, tough player for using his elbows, but current players have no respect for anyone when they throw an elbow at an opponent.

Plays like the one Ovechkin made on Campbell used to be routine in the NHL. Fans and players accepted that hockey was a risky sport and stuff like that happened because they were hockey plays and not plays where the intent was to injure. Today, those same plays are considered dirty and malicious.
I think this is an excellent point (in an excellent post). There’s a huge distinction between a guy playing at the edge, occasionally going over the edge, and a downright dirty play. When someone goes over the edge, you punish them. When someone makes an downright dirty play, you punish them severely.
I feel like the distinction between a dirty play and one where a guy crosses the line has been severely diminished. I mean, when hits like Cooke on Savard, Koci on Green, or Gonchar on Clutterbuck go unpunished, you’re failing to protect the players because you’re failing to differentiate between a complete cheap shot and a bad decision.
The NHL seems to be too afraid to draw the line, so they’re putting everything in the gray area. Interestingly enough, the voice of reason on all this might be Don Cherry, because he’s a guy who clearly understands the difference between a hockey play gone wrong and on-ice assault, and he makes no bones about what should happen to the guys who commit the latter.

So...
Can we talk about something other than the Ovechkin hit? Something interesting? Something that hasn’t been killed, then ground into a fine paste?
How’s about we grade GMGM’s mid-season acquisitions?
I’ll go first:
Chimera: A -
I love what Chimmer brings to the team. His speed stretches out opposing defenses and gives us the ability to play an effective dump and chase where we actually recover the puck. What keeps him from being an A+ is that he hasn’t contributed as much on the PK or with the fisticuffs as we thought he might.
Belanger: B -
It’s early yet, but so far Belanger hasn’t lived up to his billing as a great penalty-killer. His work in the dots has been good thus far, though. Of all the acquisitions, he’s the one who looks like he’ll need time to gel with his linemates. Still, he’s an upgrade over BMo at this point.
Walker: B +
Walker has been a revelation. I knew he’d be an energy guy, but I’ve been shocked at just how good a skater he is. His two goals against Tampa were great, but his real contributions will likely come during the playoffs.
Corvo: B
He hasn’t been perfect in his own end, but it takes defensemen longer to mesh with a new system than it does forwards. That being said, his ability to skate and pass the puck out of danger will be unbelievably valuable when teams like Pittsburgh or Philly forecheck us aggressively.
Juice: INC

In Belanger’s defense, he was billed as a great PKer, but even before he had played a game with the Caps various folks around the Rink had posted stats indicating that he’s actually a fairly poor PKer beyond his face-off abilities. I fully agree with your other assessments.
"Now wait a minute. This is just purely a social call. You know, just two adults getting a stew on, man."

But as a PKer in the dot, if you win the faceoff that can help you take time off the clock. It’s not a huge benefit, but it’s something to consider.
It’s definitely a positive result, but you’ve got to be able to play if you don’t win the draw, and that’s why I’ve gotten tired of seeing Steckel out on the PK. If he loses the draw, he’s not very good at actually killing penalties.
There's a fine line between arrogance and ignorance and only I manage to erase that line.
I agree with that mostly. I’d probably give Belanger a clean B, but that’s minor. Walker has been much better than I expected (and without the sucker punching!). Corvo hasn’t shown what I expected offensively, but hopefully that will come. His speed is already paying dividends in terms of getting to loose pucks in our zone and moving them so we don’t get pinned and cycled on for entire shifts.
Tangential question: If Corvo doesn’t find his offense here, do we start having to look at BB? He would be the second guy to come here known for his offense just to see that part of his game disappear.

He hasn’t been getting a terribly large amount of PP time, which is where he cleaned up in the past.

True, but even at 5/5 he should be more potent. Haven’t seen a lot of rushes (maybe he’s being cautious in a new system) and more disturbingly hasn’t been getting his shot off and on net very much.

I’m guessing you’re referring to Poti, in which case I’d point that he had a pretty direct correlation between PP points and overall points, so when his PP time dropped, his point totals dropped as well. Still, I think you’re onto something. BB’s offensive system does not really engage the point men very effectively. On the occasions when we have done it (I’m thinking of a few games during the streak) we’ve looked pretty monstrous.
If Corvo keeps making nice outlet passes, he’ll keep getting assists, and if the forwards actually pass to their points, he’ll probably collect a few goals before the year is out. Still, like Poti, I think his overall point production will depend in large part upon his PP ice time.
There's a fine line between arrogance and ignorance and only I manage to erase that line.
So do you think BB’s system doesn’t use the points much because we score so much on the rush? Or is it something else? We’ve been cycling a lot more this year, but I still think we don’t rotate the puck up to the points as effectively as we could. Is that BB or the players?

I’d say BB. Didn’t we see an article recently where the reporter said Bruce was running forechecking drills and the entire focus of them was keeping the puck in the corner and below the goal line?
Nylander was the only player that would consistently use the point men. Maybe this added to his fall from grace, who knows.
My ability to post is only surpassed by my ability to pinch pennies.
It’s also hard to tell because we haven’t exactly had a ton of D worth using at the point. You pass the puck to Juice/Mo/Erskine/Schultz you may as well start backchecking.

which highlights the importance of having people who can move the puck like Corvo. I could care less if he gets no points — so long as he is getting the puck up to the forwards without dumping it in or turning it over in the neutral zone no one should be particularly concerned with how a defenseman performs offensively. Hell, if anything Corvo and anyone else who steps up and learns how to pass or move the puck will end up improving the defense since so many opportunities are given to other teams from the inability to cleanly get the puck out of the zone.
President and sole member of the Erskine lobby.
I think we see a lot of this from the 3rd and 4th line especially, they’ll cycle below the hash marks for a while but either not get any shots on goal or maybe Bradley will take one of his goal line shots and that’ll trickle in. They’ll go to the D if one of them pinches way down into the slot (I’m thinking of Green, but we’ve seen others occasionally take the chance, too.)
Sometimes, you really just want to hit a b**ch.
I think the reason you see that with the 3rd and 4th lines is two-fold:
1) They don’t have enough skill to both cycle the puck and look for scoring chances – they’re using everything they’ve got just to keep possession because for the 3rd or 4th line, 45 seconds of offensive zone time is a damn good shift.
2) They don’t have the speed with the puck to get separation on the cycle. When Ovie, Semin or Backstrom curls to the slot off a cycle, they’ve got the quickness to elude their check and a quick enough release to get a good clean shot off.
There's a fine line between arrogance and ignorance and only I manage to erase that line.

Yeah, I don’t take them too seriously though. I got called a troll after the pre-season game against them because I pointed out the logical inconsistency of “oh well it doesn’t matter that we lost to an AHL team because it’s only the pre-season” (true, sorta) but followed with “but our PK looked friggin’ sweet!” Well… it was a meaningless game against an AHL team. I don’t see him pushing Bradley out simply because Bradley is younger and Walker doesn’t bring that much more to the game than Bradley.

He hasn’t been perfect in his own end, but it takes defensemen longer to mesh with a new system than it does forwards. That being said, his ability to skate and pass the puck out of danger will be unbelievably valuable when teams like Pittsburgh or Philly forecheck us aggressively.

I’m hearing the Caps have/are going to ask the NHL to rescind the major penalty assessed to Alex Ovechkin yesterday for his hit/shove.

NHL is defining “boarding” now and in light of the severity of B.Campbell’s injury, Ovechkin may face suspension.

If they are defining “boarding” now and use that to suspend AO, how is that consistent with not suspending Cooke because they hadn’t defined “intent to injure” and “head shot.” If AO’s hit is suspendable, and Cooke’s is not, then this league really is fucked up.

And the video shows Alex tapping Campbell with his stick before the hit, so Campbell definitely knew he was about to be hit. Boarding is usually the result of a hit on an unsuspecting player.
that is true as far as the stick. he actually hooked him first so it should not have caught Campbell by surprise. But that could actually make it WORSE for Ovie cause one could argue even with knowing it was coming look what he did to him…

by iwearstripes on Mar 15, 2010 11:07 AM EDT up reply actions
It was certainly a boarding, Ovechkin should have realized his own strength there. I personally felt it was a double minor just because of the severity of the hit but I doubt there was any intent to injure. If there was, he would have followed through on the hit instead of going after the puck. Ovechkin wouldn’t have tripped over him if he was trying to plow him into the boards.

If Ovie was boarding him, the rut would have been inconsequential, because Ovechkin would have just driven his ass off his feet and into the wall.

You have a point but we were still calling for a penalty when the same exact thing happened to Semin. On the flip side, Laich had a nearly identical hit and it was called a clean, good hit.
I think it was still boarding but I agree that the ice is the reason it turned into a major and ultimately is going to put Campbell out for quite some time.

There is no double minor penalty for boarding. Its a minor or a Major+. See Section 6 Rule 42.
http://www.nhl.com/ice/page.htm?id=26329
There is an enormous amount of judgment involved in the application of this rule by the Referees. The onus is on the player (or goalkeeper) applying the check to ensure his opponent is not in a vulnerable position and if so, he must avoid the contact. However, there is also a responsibility on the player with the puck to avoid placing himself in a dangerous and vulnerable position. This balance must be considered by the Referees when applying this rule.
That’s pretty clear. Or not.

The argument there (and I say this as a guy who’s contributed to a number of hockey rulebooks) is that referees won’t call the major if they have the double minor option. Refs don’t want to be the bad guys, so they take the middle ground. The minor or major writing forces them to take a stand in one direction or the other.
I am a hockey fan first, and a Caps fan second.

Some rules require a lot less judgment, and officials have more experience making them (ie: they happen more often). I can trust that my guys know the difference between a double minor for roughing, and a 5 for fighting. I can’t say that about boarding, it doesn’t happen that often, and when it does, its seldom really ugly.

This one is the least egregious of all the other incidents. i just watched them all. BC did lose an edge, and may have not gone down. Tough call for CC. Based on prior violations, i would say he should be suspended BUT based on Colin Campbell basically throwing OUT prior acts, he could walk. I have no idea what should be done. I just want Ovie to be a little more careful. I dont want to hear his name tied to any more incidents. It wont matter if he is at fault or not, people are NOT going to give him the BOTD anymore.

re: Talbot
While I agree it’s stupid to say that Crosby is better than Ovechkin because Crosby has a cup and OV doesn’t, I also think it’s ridiculous to say we should completely ignore it because it would also tell us that Talbot is better than OV.
We shouldn’t ignore goals score because it tells us that Latendresse is better than Toews this season. Or +/- because it told us that Michael Roszival was the best player in the league one year.
Championships is a stat like any other, how much weight you want to put on it is up to you. I personally think it should be very small, but I’m also pretty sure it shouldn’t be zero just because Talbot has a cup and Ovechkin doesn’t.
The major difference between something like goals or plus-minus and a Cup is individual versus team. I think that’s really the sticking point for most people.
If we invented a Cup +/- where a SC final won was a plus and a SC final lost was a minus, then Crosby and Ovechkin are even!

I agree. My only point is that players should be given some credit for championships when all is said and done. It should probably be small, but it shouldn’t be zero. The fact that Talbot has a cup doesn’t disprove that.
Right, which was the whole point of my comment on the subject above. What’s the exchange rate? How great or how small is the credit? On the one hand, Talbot is a role player who by no means carried his team. Perhaps you look at guys like Malkin and Cam Ward and say “well hell, they were post-season MVPs.” On the other hand, maybe you look at Talbot’s two game 7 goals and wonder whether Malkin or Crosby have a Cup without Talbot. The Penguins were just the best team last year, that’s what it boils down to. And Team Canada was by far the most talented team in the Olympics. I give Crosby credit for playing well on great teams, but let’s not pretend he’s operating alone.

Completely agree, I think it’s ridiculous for people to say that a cup and gold medal proves that Crosby is better than Ovechkin (especially the gold medal considering the difference in the quality of teams.) How much credit should be given for championships is impossible to know, as with anything else it has to be taken in context, and you’re correct in saying that it’s not like Crosby carried the Pens or Canada to championships.
I just disagree with the logic: “Dilfer has a ring and Marino doesn’t, but Marino was better than Dilfer, so rings must be meaningless.”
Yeah, that’s obviously a far fetched example, but people use it to put the flaw in high relief. There are so many examples that prove the fallacy of the statement, you could go on for days.

Is there a chance that he could be removed as disciplinarian? Not saying that anyone in his position wouldn’t be heavily scrutinized, but it seems that more often than not his decisions are deemed wrong by the writers and fans.
Also, it bothers me that injury will influence suspension time. You mean to tell me that if Campbell walks that hit off, then OV is less likely to be suspended? Lastly, the argument that his hit was unnecessary is ridiculous. You could make an argument that all hits in hockey are unnecessary.

Sincere Question
Do all of you die hard Capital fans like myself really WANT the NHL to do nothing for what happened yesterday? Do you think something like yesterday will not happen again? Do you think this is best for Ovie himself moving forward and for the future?
Forget about today or the past, just do you think he should be sat down or do you think he is 100 percent an innocent victim and we should just move on?? Do you also think that long-term doing nothing could possibly have a negative effect on the perception of the Capitals? I think it can only help to sit him 4 games in the long run. But i want to know if i am all alone here??

That’s not really apples-to-apples because in that scenario the stick holder isn’t an active participant.
Let’s say you’re trying to a trip a guy when it happens. You deserve a 2-minute minor (like Ovie—though maybe he deserved 5), but then the guy blows his knee out.

I don’t think it’s black or white on whether or not Ovechkin is 100 percent innocent in this situation. As you can see, yesterday when it seemed like Campbell would just be out for the game, most people thought suspension was outrageous. Now that Campbell is hurt, people seem to think a suspension needs to absolutely happen. If Ovechkin were to sit a couple of games, I wouldn’t be upset because he would be getting some rest. He, like Flash, played in the Olympics and could use a break just like BB said of Flash a few games ago. The circumstances surrounding how Ovechkin is given a rest is what bothers me. I’d much rather see BB scratch him to rest him for the playoffs, than he get suspended. Earlier in the year when he hit Kaleta, I thought that hit was fine. Even if it wasn’t, Kaleta is a punk, and laid the same hit a game later on an opposing player. This boarding call laid the groundwork for Ovechkin to be a repeat offender. I’m more concerned that these controversial hits are giving OV a bad reputation, and whether we like it or not, reputation is starting to play a bigger role on future suspensions.

Campbell did mention, as part of his strident defense of the gutless Cooke non-suspension, that Booth had to do a better job of not putting himself in that vulnerable a situation, which is part of the reason why Richards was not suspended.
So, does Ovie get due consideration in this light? Campbell has made that move behind the goal a thousand times; did he not know he could have been lined up and drilled?

Very busy, but wanted to get my two cents in on AO. I am 100% sure that this has been covered above, and I apologize for not putting this in the proper location in the thread, just don’t have the time to scroll through 800 comments.
I thought the major was the correct call at the time. AO pushed him while having a clear view of his numbers, although not directly from behind, and while in a dangerous part of the ice.
I thought the gamer was overkill. He didn’t crosscheck, trip, slew foot or hit him with a lot of force.
I don’t think a suspension is warranted.

2. It’s the underlying notion that I don’t agree with, not the outcome, and here’s why:
There’s an interesting conversation to be had here about the merits of Schultz versus the other options. By framing it in terms of “let’s get it done for our boy,” then we have no conversation – all we’re doing is braiding each other’s hair and telling each other how great we are.

I think it’d be nice to support our Sarge (especially since no one else will I think) so I voted for him. Would’ve really voted for Volchenkov or Michalek of the choices there. Maybe Lidstrom overall—he’s still really good. Just so tough to judge.
Alright then, which player deserves top spot? I think Volchenkov’s BkS and hits numbers put him at #1. (Seidenberg is the runaway leader for BkS, by the way). He’s 5th in BkS, 5th in QualComp among players with 30+GP, and only Regehr and Michalek of the guys on that list have a higher ValD (not really sure what that shows though)

I have to say that I don’t know who I’d vote for…but it wouldn’t be Schultz. As much as I love the guy, it’s hard to overlook his skating ability in this context.
My gut says Regehr or Volchenkov.
Well...
Here’s the list:
Brooks Orpik 35%
Brent Seabrook 16%
Jeff Schultz 16%
Anton Volchenkov 8%
Willie Mitchell 7%
Robyn Regehr 5%
Zbynek Michalek 4%
Douglas Murray 4%
Scott Hannan 2%
Marc-Edouard Vlasic 2%
Greg Zanon 1%
Chris Phillips 1%

See, this is where I’d disagree. I think that moving the puck out of your own end efficiently is inherently part of playing defense. I used to play with a guy who was much, much better than me in most aspects of the game . . . except skating with the puck and making outlet passes. Like Schultz, he had a phenomenal poke-check, but once he got the puck on his stick, the best thing he ever did was pound it off the boards.
The upshot was that he’d steal the puck, only to turn it right back over, only to steal it again, and on and on ad nauseum. If he could have just hit that outlet with regularity, we would have spent much less time in our own zone.

From everything I’ve heard/seen, Regehr’s not having the greatest of years. In terms of “total career,” I might take him, but I’ve been really impressed with Murray each and every time I’ve watched him play. He completely frustrated Ovie when we were out in SJ.

I’m not sure on Regehr – I’ve heard the same, but it seems like it’d trendy to bash Calgary’s defense so it’s kind of a chicken/egg situation.
Agree with you on Murray; really impressed when he played Washington. Just haven’t seen him too much, and when he did I was little concerned with his foot speed – although I guess this is as much about how productive guys have been as it is scouting them.
Yeah, he does look a bit slow, but he was all over Ovie like stink on poop.

I was just coming here to post that it felt like it was going to be a 2 game suspension. Not surprising given the non-hockey fans throwing their idiot opinions around. Now we have to sit here scratching our heads why Downie wasn’t even considered to be suspended and it was the only play that looked absolutely malicious.

I genuinely don’t understand this. Is it an anti-Caps thing, an anti-Russian thing, an anti-Ovie thing, or plain stupidity?

Just saw that Chara, Morrow and Mike Richards are the nominees for Messier’s leadership award. Gotta love the leadership award finalists being the captains of three of the big underachieving teams in the league. I hear Brind’amour just missed the cut.

Morrow I buy. Can’t comprehend the other two picks.
My ability to post is only surpassed by my ability to pinch pennies.
Dallas is definitely the least underachieving team of the three, and Morrow has had a strong comeback from a knee injury last year. So I agree he is the most deserving of the three. But really it is just a dumb award. How in the hell are outside people supposed to rank the leadership qualities of NHL players? Just going to be another dumb trophy awarded on reputation.
