Max Talbot can predict the future.
You can compare Sid to Ovechkin as much as you want. Maybe at the end of their careers, Ovechkin's going to have more points. Good for him. Sidney's going to win more Stanley Cups. That makes him the better player, the better leader." - Maxime Talbot ( From Empty Netters)
Impressive. If only he could learn to fight? or act?
I'm sure Pens fans wouldn't like this logic when I bring up Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemeuix.
If this FanPost is written by someone other than one of the blog's authors, the opinions expressed in it do not necessarily reflect those of this blog or SB Nation.

By that logic Claude is the better Lemeuix, as well. Cups are representative of team, not individual, accomplishments.

That logic means....
Duane Sutter a better player then Mario.
I’m just sayin’.
He won 4 straight Cups with the Islanders in the 80’s, that’s twice as many as Mario won in his playing career!
It means...
The best player in the history of the NHL is Henri Richard. Now Henri is a Hall of Fame player, but he (and anyone else) would say his brother Maurice was better. And while Montreal fans might argue, there are several players in NHL history who were better than Maurice Richard (Gretzky, Lemieux, Orr, Howe, Shore all come to mind.)
Here’s a name for y’all. How many of you have heard of Larry Hillman? He played for 9 NHL teams in his career (Everyone but the Rangers of the Original 6, as well the North Stars, Kings, Flyers and Sabres). During a 22 year career he bounced from team to team, and in and out of the NHL, going to the AHL as well, and the WHA.
Guess what, he has as many Stanley Cup rings as Wayne and Mario combined, with six. And he also won the Avco World Trophy in the WHA as well…
More Cups does not mean better player…
Let's go Caps!
Funny, it looked like the pens were tanking under Sidney’s leadership, he was on a scoring drought and they were out of the playoff hunt. To try to “lead” his team he was the third man in to punch a reeling player between the legs from behind, and sucker punched another player off the face off. The Pens didn’t truly turn a new corner until they fired the coach and brought in Bill Guerin and Chris Kunitz. I’d say that those three were more integral to the Pens leadership than Sidney.

I like how you conveniently forget that under Crosby’s “leadership” (whatever that means), the Pens advanced to within 2 wins of the Stanley Cup in ’08.

The intangible “leadership” is the only thing that can be pointed to if you want to make any sort of argument that one team’s accomplishments make a single player better than another.
And to your argument, I conveniently forgot it because they conveniently didn’t win the Stanley Cup in ‘08 since clearly that’s all that matters.
Suspend Colin Campbell!
I love this logic! (although Talbot might just be saying it to avoid getting hit in the balls by Crosby)
So the player who has more Stanley Cups is the better player. That makes SOOO much sense! Just look at it Joe Motzko (remember him) has one Stanley Cup ring (seriously) Ovechkin has 0. Ergo Joe Motzko is naturally the better then Ovechkin. And since Talbot also has more Stanley Cups he must think he’s better then Ovechkin. Hell entire teams must be better! It’s so lucky we have people to point out TEAM accomplishments to help us decide who has the edge in individual talent.
Disagree on the better player being judged by number of championships, and disagree on going out of your way to antagonize a guy who scores on your team almost at will.

Nice username, Milbury. What did mommy tell you about playing with computers after bedtime.

Actually, your mommy taught everything after bedtime.

My “witty” retort notwithstanding, I actually created my username prior to hearing Milbury’s comments before/during/after the Feb 7 game (since I was at the Feb 7 game and didn’t watch the replay until a couple days later). It is actually a take on Pedro’s “the Yankees are my daddy” quote from a few years ago. Sorry if it offends you.

Relax. It’s clear from his post that he’s a rational human being.
PensAreYourDaddy, don’t worry—BWBW doesn’t represent us.

Then by your (and Max’s) logic, the following players are better than Sidney Crosby:
Dave Semenko
Larry Hillman (see above)
Dave Schultz
Darren McCarty
Jamie Langenrbrunner
I don’t see how the number of Cups translates into talent. There’s more to winning a Cup than talent. There’s hard work, there’s dedication. Does Crosby have all that and talent? Of course he does. But so does Brooks Orpik, and he’s not better than Crosby, but by the logic here, he’s Crosby’s equal…
Let's go Caps!
MikeL, perhaps I wasn’t clear. I agree with you, disagree with Max. We love him, but he’s not a real heavy thinker. Just thought I’d share one Pens fan’s opinion since the original poster mentioned what we would think of this quote as it relates to the Wayne or Mario debate.

Oh whew… good. I wouldn’t want someone like Max entering the blog’s NCAA Pick thingy and winning that. :)
By the way, all of you who haven’t entered yet, go check it out. I entered, it was painless, and you might win bragging rights. :)
Let's go Caps!
I can’t pretend to speak for Talbot, but if you take out the word “player” and replace it with “career” in this sentence, that most of you have objected to the most, then it makes a lot more sense.
“That makes him the better player, the better leader.”
But whatevs, everyone knows that Jiri Slegr isn’t better than Zdeno Chara (and that Miroslav Satan isn’t better than Ovechkin) just because they have Stanley Cups.
Wayne Gretzky had it wrong: 100% of the shots Gary Roberts doesn't take DO go in.

In the future, something like this is better as a FanShot.
Everyone should take a minute to review the Community Guidelines and FanShot/FanPost User Guide to remind themselves of what should go where.
Thanks!
